INTRO
the story of the odyssey is one that has always meant a lot to me since the first time I read it. The language of Homer, the verbal storytelling of the Greeks, and the history and myths that come with the stories create a new atmosphere and takes the reader to another planet; strength and cowardice is shown, as well as love and deep hate. With this, I chose to compare and contrast the ancient mythology to a modern take on the story, written by Zachary Mason. I used Book 5 of Homer’s Odyssey, and the first chapter of Mason’s book, where Odysseus encounters an illusion. The contrast between the hardship he is going through in Book 5 and the ideallistic scene of Odysseus’ return home, creates an interesting and entertaining read. I also knew that observing another approach on Homer’s epic poem would lead to an evoking experiment with typography and design.
