Dear Friends,

MAGIC MIRROR

the community of Sziget was originally founded to create a temporary dream state together, which became a European meeting point for all different cultures. Here there is no question about respecting individual freedom, one's right to the freedom of conscience or lifestyle, let it be sexual or religious freedom or the freedom of expression or cognition. In the name of Love Revolution, the Main Stage is going to host notable personalities such as UN Messenger of Peace and environmentalist, Jane Goodall as well as poet, activist and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Emi Mahmoud. Additionally former US Vice President and founder of The Climate Reality Project, Al Gore is sending a video message to Szitizens. A Canadian-American acrobatic duo, The Arrow by a Canadian-American duo with the motto: All love is equal. Through their dance Swiss dancers, Dakota and Nadia will stand for human rights, while Drew Dollaz, American street dancer, will raise awareness regarding domestic violence. Throughout the island you will see the concept of Love Revolution, for instance at the NGO Island or Magic Mirror. I truly hope that, besides providing carefree fun, we will be able to raise awareness about issues that can only be solved by our joint efforts. I would like to believe that the whole world can be a place like Sziget: accepting, tolerant, future-conscious, peaceful and happy.

PROGRAMS 23 Sziget programs

These are the first two words that come to my mind when I think about my yearly experience at Sziget. This festival is located on an island in the middle of one of the most beautiful capital cities of Europe – opening up a completely different world, you can escape dreary weekdays and have carefree fun at Sziget. Your country of origin, the color of your skin as well as the gender of the person you love has never mattered at Sziget. It’s not so surprising that Sziget has grown to be one of the largest festivals in Europe. I, for one, visit every year because of the great atmosphere and the feeling of freedom – here I can hold hands with or kiss whomever I like without being afraid of judgment. Sziget is truly the island of freedom and love for me in the heart of Budapest. Let’s meet at Sziget this year, too – besides the parties, it is well worth it to discover the abundance of cultural programs, since you can watch and experience performances you would otherwise not have the opportunity to see. Love Revolution 2019, here we go!

MAGIC MIRROR HAS IT ALL

If you say LGBTQ, we say Magic Mirror. If you say Magic Mirror, we say talks, concerts, dazzling evening shows, and wanton parties. The ‘Spiegeltent’ is not only popular among the members of the LGBTQ community, but it has also become a cult location for everyone. Acceptance, openness and self-interpretation are the three expressions that best characterize this venue. Magic Mirror is a place that welcomes everyone with open arms, where you can talk about anything honestly and openly, and search for the meaning of your own identity. As usual, the afternoon begins with film screenings, followed by Mirror Talks about burning current issues, then comes a comedy show and a concert before the eagerly awaited evening show, culminating in a party that lasts until dawn – this year in French, Hungarian, German and Spanish style. Chicks on Speed, FAKA, Khan of Finland, Las Bajas Pasiones, Laskaar, MADMOIZEL… we could go on forever with listing the amazing performers. Let’s jump into the programs together!

MAGIC MIRROR Chicago elected a black lesbian woman as mayor, both the prime minister of Ireland and Luxembourg are openly gay, while Taiwan has just passed a law legalizing same-sex marriage – it seems that the world is becoming a more accepting place every day. However, only recently a lesbian couple was beaten in the London metro, and homosexual relations can still be punished with death sentence in a number of countries around the world. Furthermore, Hungary still does not have equal marriage. One of the major questions of this year’s program is what LGBTQ culture actually is at these events. Is it possible to give a unified representation of this community whose every member defines their identity in a unique and individual manner? What connects them other than the fact that they are not fitting into their heteronormative surroundings? How do they relate to this system of standards? What are the current trends of queer culture? Who are the newest faces defining the international scene and how can we communicate Hungarian issues embedded in an international context? We are looking for the answers to these questions at Magic Mirror, the LGBTQ venue of Sziget Festival. The parties are going to be even more colorful than in the previous years – the organizers invited guests from a number of countries to evoke various atmospheres. Yass! from Barcelona, a “sister” of last year’s hugely successful Tanga! party, will provide us with pop hits. The Locamente team succeeded in attracting even more European parties this year, so they also invited the Sweety Darling series from Amsterdam and the Astronaughty party series from Vienna – both of them have drag queens to bring the vibe of Western European gay parties to Budapest. Naturally, Budapest has its own stars: after a few years’ hiatus, our very own Lady Dömper performs her show ‘Transzvarieté’ during the Persephone party. We wouldn’t miss it for the world – as well as the Madonna Party of the Dancing Queens, Kristóf Steiner and his husband, Nimrod Dagan. Parisian artists Mister K will

also be accompanying the Queens with a unique performance presenting the icons of past decades. Legars is also someone to pay attention to – the DJ emerged from the !szkafander and !tape parties before becoming the resident DJ of Anker’t. His sets are defined by deep house and tech house, and this time he will be accompanied by Fedora’s live vocals. The list wouldn’t be complete without Berlin, the center of European queer culture and nightlife. The Killekill label and agency have practically erased the boundaries between queer and hetero culture. Since their own festival, Krake, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Killekill was invited to curate the musical selection on Sunday. Sunset Motherfucker attacks with and extravagant mix of latin foxtrot and rock’n’roll. TurkishFinnish Khan moved to Berlin from New York in 2002, and he has become a staple of the local nightlife both as a producer and a performer. In 2008, he founded his own record label called I’m Single Records, and since May 2018, he has been hosting a tea dance party at the Paloma Bar. On Sunday, he will satisfy every one of your needs with a live set. The roundtable discussions called Mirror Talks revolve around the most important current issues this year as well. Fake news is a burning topic and one of the main weapons of the 21st century. How does it affect society and the LGBTQ community? How does Facebook fight against it? Three professionals try to answer these questions along with Ádám András Kanicsár who will be the moderator of the talks all week. One of the main topics will be the meaning of the ‘T’ in LGBTQ, the struggles that the youngest generation of trans people have to face, and how society relates to them. You will also have the chance to learn the difference between drag queens and makeup artists. The beauty industry is starting to rely more and more on male makeup artists and influencers, while drag queen culture is enjoying a new golden age – the success of RuPaul’s Drag Race is a prime example of this progress. A roundtable discussion with seven guests will focus on the future of

the LGBTQ community. These are, indeed, complicated times: while many European countries decided on supporting LGBTQ rights, others seem to be moving backwards. The fluctuating relationship of churches and gays will also be discussed, among various other topics. The late night shows are a cult classic among visitors. You'll barely be able to find a spot by 11pm, so you better arrive in time for the amazing performance of the Australian group, Briefs. You would be a fool to miss this parade of beautiful bodies, acrobatics and boylesque that will surely make you blush at some point. Theirs is the kind of dish that a second serving of won’t hurt – you can watch their show every night if you please. The American-Canadian duo of Matthew Richardson and Francis Perreault, The Arrow present their own love story as guest performers, which will add a special spice to the show. In addition to the main show, you will have plenty of reasons to stay at Magic Mirror. Founding members of Chicks on Speed, Melissa Logan and Alex Murray-Leslie have been threading the fine line between music, art and fashion for 20 years by now. Their multidisciplinary cultural project is a pioneering mixture of pop music, performing arts, fashion and new media, flavored with a feminist approach. FAKA presents an eclectic aesthetic: Fela Gucci and Desire Marea tell stories about being black and queer in cis-hetero, postcolonial Africa with the help of sounds, literature, video and photography. They are showcasing that the binary logic of being a man or a woman means nothing in terms of our gender identity, because we are both men and women in spirit. Born and raised in Switzerland as a child of Spanish parents, Laskaar, blending the creative space between contemporary spirit and nostalgia, captures an original musical and visual artistic direction that is capable of giving a voice to the millennial generation. Complex musical layers are mixed with his fine, yet powerful baritone, creating a stunningly specific deep-diving, liquid and ethereal music

world. As a bonus feature, he is really handsome. The electro-rap-queer project of Las Bajas Pasiones first appeared in the clubs of Barcelona and Madrid. Their music is based on the electric guitar and the synthesizer of Toni AKA Taboo, together with the vocals of Edu Libra and Trusty. All these immerse you in a variety of thoughts – breaking down gender roles, heartache, and drugs – through visceral and bittersweet lyrics. Impossible to be categorized, MADMOIZEL is easily recognizable from her unique voice. During her captivating live act, she controls her hardware with a magic similar to that of a conductor. With Parisian roots and a classical music background, she has had many influences from neoclassicism to electronic music. Her gesture system and powerful vocals transform her live performance into an electric narrative and a dance music convention. You will also have the opportunity to participate in a special workshop. The Spanish contemporary dancer, Raisha Cosima specializes in Vogue Fem. He has won awards at numerous competitions, and at Sziget, he is sharing his knowledge. vogue culture blends with new forms of physical self-expression, and gain a new set of dance moves. The workshop is also a great opportunity to meet new acquaintances. The film screenings also address important issues of the LGBTQ community. The first film of Lukas Dhont, entitled ‘Girl’, won several prizes in Cannes in 2018. Lara is a 15-year-old girl born into the body of a boy. She is studying to become a professional ballerina at the prestigious Belgian dance academy. In addition to the demanding physical and psychological training of the ballet classes, Lara is also preparing for her gender reassignment surgery. The film presents these processes without frills – it was no surprise that Victor Polster received the award in the category of Best Actress in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival. ‘Raw Chicks’ is a documentary about eleven versatile and internationally acclaimed live music producers from Berlin who based their career on live acts. They are all women, who enter the stage with their own tracks and their own instruments and devices. Their musical spectrum ranges from experimental genres to noise music and electro-acoustic music.

The ‘Fresh Meat’ selection consists of short films. ‘Hello, Stranger’ presents the story of a transgender father who struggles to reconcile his work as a drag queen with raising his children and holding together his broken family. ‘Period.’ puts the feeling of shame on menstruation into words, and makes the smeared blood visible. It reminds you that the purpose of menstruation is primarily related to birth. In ‘Mr. Mare’, a tiny person’s silhouette shows up on the chest x-ray of a young man, the figure’s head poking out from his side like a tumor. Who is this tiny creature and what kind of change is he brining? Watch the film to find out! Sziget Festival is welcoming and accepting, but Magic Mirror rises as an ever safe island for the LGBTQ community. Moreover, the carefully compiled program offers a ‘festival in the festival’ character to the venue. Even if you only spend time here, you are guaranteed to feel good – there will always be something that will amaze you, or make you think deeper. Whether queer culture is already your natural habitat, or if you are still looking for your identity, Magic Mirror is your place. Come and enjoy being yourself!

MAGIC MIRROR CIRCUS

CIRQUE DU SZIGET Cirque du Sziget is one of the favorite venues of Szitizens – most of them simply can’t imagine Sziget Festival without these contemporary circus performances anymore. Looking at this year’s program we are not suprised at all: Cirque Alfonse’s crazy and spectacular show takes us to heaven and hell and everything in-between. Prepare to be enchanted by the best representatives of mallakhamb, a traditional Indian sport. The Korean group BONGnJOULE is performing in Europe for the first time. The Ethiopian Circus Abyssinia tells the story of two children – come and watch the show to see if their dreams come true. 39

– A HIGHLY POPULAR VENUE The program of the Big Top Tent starts every day at 2pm with an extraordinary production. The new show of Cirque Inextremiste has three protagonists who go on an incredible adventure. After the loss of his wheelchair, Rémi comes back onto the stage as the controller of a mini excavator. Like an exoskeleton, it quickly becomes an extension of his body, giving him strength and unparalleled accuracy, transforming him into a mechanical acrobat, an almost-superhero. The jaw-dropping show of Circus Abyssinia is the very first Ethiopian circus production created entirely by Ethiopian artists. They are staging the tale of Bibi and Bichu, who dreamed of joining the circus as little boys and growing up to be world-class jugglers. Discover how this dream comes into life with breathtaking tricks, authentic

Ethiopian tunes and the best of contemporary circus, directed by Bibi Tesfamariam, who, together with Bichu Tesfamariam, also participates in the show. BONGnJOULE's show, The Road to Heaven, is the story of a young man who wants to climb into heaven on a long pole. Through the simple act of climbing up and down in an irregularly repeated fashion, the audience gets to reflect on the monotony of urban existence. It is not easy to get to heaven – however, traditional Korean music and the charming performance may help you get a little closer. If you want something truly extravagant, the Canadian Cirque Alfonse is the one for you. Their performance this year will be even crazier and more spectacular than before. The set is a church symbolizing

the performers’ birthplace. To that, simply add six daredevil acrobats and three musicians, and the result is a fabulous rock musical where everyone’s turned upside down, celebrating everything that can happen in heaven and in hell, and everywhere in-between. Prepare yourself for an extraordinary ceremony, something you have never seen before. Mallakhamb is not only an Indian sport with centuries-old traditions, but an art form as well. The five best mallakhamb acrobats of India will grace the stage at Sziget Festival, to dazzle you with their talent and their fearlessness through a mix of wrestling, gymnastics and aerial yoga. Your gaze is guaranteed to be glued to them the whole time! We are honoring the legacy of Linda Farkas every night. Following

her tragic and sudden death, her unique fire costumes – fire dresses, tiaras and accessories – will be presented in an amazing show performed by outstanding Hungarian artists. Join them in their spectacular, fiery dance! The closing act each night is the show of Flip Fabrique from Quebec. Join them in their summer house where six friends meet again after ten years, and become a part of their sentimental, amazing and spectacular performance. The group has a worldwide fan base – besides Budapest this summer they are also performing in London, Graz and Edinburgh. The only constant element in the show, Turn Around Boy, of Rémy Benard and Pierre Bertrand is the movement of the ring. The French

duo experiments with the boundaries of weightlessness while they are attempting to conquer and rule the moment as well as the ring that keeps them in the air. Their flight takes you to a unique world where anything can happen. The ring only stops turning when the performers land on the ground. Fresh, funny and surprising – this is how Finnish Sisus Circus could be described. The five female acrobats are devoted to height, gruesome stunts and unforgettable fun. A perfect afternoon treat – just like the show of Papito, whose magic suitcase contains a whole universe. Argentinian Edgardo Gonzalez Calafell attempts to find and reveal his true essence, not only as an actor but also as a human being, compacted into 30 minutes of carefree fun.

THEATRE

Women, migration and acceptance Seen through theatre and dance performances Women will be the focus of Theatre and Dance Tent. Virgins, queens, sages, mothers and girls in school uniforms will represent faces of femininity. Emotions that exist between love and hate, domestic violence and school harassment can all be discussed through different performances. The other main topic is migration: you can learn what makes someone leave everything behind to go on a journey into the unknown. Queendom, the show of Veronika Szabó inspires you to think about how our everyday “costumes” control us. Seven creatures, seven women’s bodies. Virgins, queens, sages, mothers and fighters come to life from your imagination. The piece balances at the intersection of contemporary theatre, physical theatre and drag shows. Based on improvisations and agreed-upon rules, every show is different depending on the contribution of the audience. The show displays representations of men and women from the Renaissance to the pop culture of the present. It presents and projects roles onto each other until their boundaries become blurred and they can be redrawn in your imagination. Due to the importance of its theme, the performance of Sol Picó will be

37

performed multiple times. Their street dance piece aims to raise awareness and provide visibility to the humanitarian issue of refugees, who risk their lives on a daily basis in order to escape from their countries of origin, hoping for survival and a better life. With live music by Pere Jou, Halab is a shocking, yet exciting and overwhelming piece which shows us the terrible reality of thousands through music and dance. The acrobats of the Australian Gravity & Other Myths are pushing the limits of physicality accompanied by live drums. Their show is quite puritan: there is nothing, but the stage and the dancers. You can admire the collapse of inner limits and the boundaries of physical potentials, if there are any.

Girls in school uniforms tear apart ideas about how girls are expected to behave. JUCK will definitely grab your attention. A movement, activism, power and dance, interpreted by five girls whose simple hip movement is constantly evolving, eventually becoming a trademark of female sexuality and freedom. A strange, humorous, but mostly contradictory relationship: Ella Rothschild’s choreography combines music and dance into a special language that shows the countless emotions between love and hate. What kind of experiences await you, if you decide to bind your life to someone else’s? Directed by Marco Layera, a performance by nine young Chilean girls showcase the serial sexual violence

against teenage girls of Latin America. Their show tells us about domestic violence, marginalization and bullying at school, just like abortion. These are horrible stories, but we simply can’t turn away from them, because they are happening all over the world. We should all start to think about how we can help to prevent them. The show of Soharóza, Az Ügy (The Case) presents the everyday life of an office, merged with the genre innovations of world famous Hungarian composer and ethnomusicologist, Zoltán Kodály and a catwalk-concert. Their main goal was to present the conflicts between the individuals and general rules, in all their absurdity and ordinariness. Every client of the office is a protagonist of their own banal, yet unique story, trying to solve the mystery of a particular day – everyone can find themselves reflected in one of them. Muljil 2, the performance of the Korean group Elephants Laugh, is about refugees and acceptance. The Korean word ‘muljil’ refers to the diving activities of women living on Jeju Island. It is understood that when diving into the deep water, each diver endures a critical moment of breathlessness at least twice. Only those who are determined to risk their lives can overcome such brief moments of crisis. The crossroads of life and death that divers encounter certainly exists in our daily lives. Although our lives are separated like islands, we are all immersed in the same sea and nobody can choose their fate. Never forget that! Performers also include refugees living in Hungary. Not this way, that way! Korean-French company, Galmae is trying to figure out how crowds are moving. Do we move differently when we are alone than when we are in a crowd? What determines who we are as a crowd? What is an individual within the group? We are constantly moving to avoid collision, we are constantly looking for our place. Yet there is something that makes us more as a crowd than as many separated individuals. Is this how we become a community? Come and try to find the answers! Migration is a highlighted topic this year: the Malaysian drummers of Orang Orang are looking for the answer of where your true home lies, and whether it is possible to preserve a person’s identity, language and culture in another country. The tales of the Malaysian people come to life about the time when their ancestors had to migrate South in order to survive. Find out what makes someone leave everything behind to go on a treacherous journey that leads to the unknown.

THEATRE

THE MAGICAL WALKABOUTS

Appearing in the most unexpected places and times, street theatre performers of Sziget cannot go unmentioned. If you walk around with open eyes and ears, you will see a 4.5 meter tall camel, a virtuoso playing a rolling piano, dodo-riding adventurers, and masks hidden in lamp covers. Stop what you are doing, join the march and let yourself be enchanted!

35

One of the most exciting performers is the group Foco alAire from Mexico. They will march among us as if they were members of a strange modern tribe wearing dark suits, smart shoes, and lamp covers with faceless masks on them on their heads. They will be marching to music that evokes tribal rituals until they reach their destination where they will start a dance – involving you, too. Steampunk, collective craziness and a lot of love? Yes! Prepare yourself for the 18 member group of Sound de Secá who welcome you with drums, dancing and an enchanting atmosphere. Don’t protest, let yourself be guided by the rhythm! Postmen, countryside policemen, or street comedians? It’s not easy to identify the two ‘Sergeants’ of Poulets Crus from France. They will cruise around Sziget on a rickety motor to

disturb and harass you in their adorable style. Naturally, their main purpose is to entertain you and make you smile. Mister Piano returns with his rolling piano to Sziget after a two year hiatus. Yes, you read that right: a rolling piano that plays not only classics, but today’s hits as well. The artist is a multi-tasking genius, so definitely keep your eyes peeled for him! The performance of Mission Delirium from California is influenced by many different styles: Bollywood, Balkan, Arabian and Brazilian tunes mix with tango, afro-pop and salsa. The group consists of 20 performers featuring pounding drums and face-melting brass. Let your hair down, get delirious and shake your ass with our mobile dance party in true San Francisco style! Are dodos really extinct? French street theatre company Cie Ekart doesn’t believe so. Their extensive

study of genes has unearthed two dodos and attracted two intrepid explorers whose biggest adventure is to change the usual routine of your everyday life. They are willing to know every little detail about you, and who knows? You may even become friends. “I dreamed of a journey, but when I woke up, I found myself locked behind these bars. I was incarcerated while I am the journey incarnated… I have thousands of routes, exotic places, scents, tastes and images in my head… I have lived a thousand lives before ending up here, where curious eyes follow me, and where I am in danger. I have to leave, now, as quickly as possible. I must live as I have always lived – free.” Châmoh, the giant puppet camel made of wood escapes through Sziget for a last journey in search of a utopia.

EXHIBITION

100 YEARS OF BAUHAUS – CELEBRATE IN THE MUSEUM QUARTER The Bauhaus celebrates its 100th anniversary this year – ways to participate in the festivities includes a (virtual) walk around the study of the movement’s father, Walter Gropius. Don’t miss it, visit the Museum Quarter! Why is Bauhaus so significant? Why does it fascinate and intrigue people until this day? When you think modern, you think Bauhaus – how did it become the most defining art school of the 20th century, considering that it had only been operating for 14 years? The idea of Bauhaus was much more than just an extraordinary curriculum. It was an intellectual program designed to last for decades that approached the problems of the design process with a new method, realizing that formation shall be derived from the knowledge and exploration of the shaping possibilities of materials as well as the function and the requirements of its purpose. By knowing the materials and exploring their potential, students received new artistic tools to express themselves. At a later stage of its operation, the school was characterized by an increasing sensitivity to social issues. Bauhaus is 100 years old! The German National Tourist Board prepares a 20 square meters 3D-printed Bauhaus house honoring one of the most significant art institutions of the 20th century. Moreover, with the help of VR glasses, you can immerse yourself in the birthplace of a movement and learn about the first unified composition of modern style, the study of founder Walter Gropius. Pro tip: switch the ceiling light off and look out the window!

CHICKS ON SPEED

– INTERVIEW

MUSIC

Alex Murray-Leslie and Melissa Logan are pioneers in the fields of pop music, performing arts, fashion and new media. Alex, the Australian member of the duo has been working on creating a musical instrument from high heels in the past few years among other projects. If you wanted to describe Chicks on Speed, you could say that they are a multidisciplinary cultural project lasting for more than twenty years. Spending such a long period of time together practically made them sisters – however, in order to stay together, they needed a lot of humor as well as pushing each other out of their comfort zone. You have been working together for more than 20 years now. What do you like the most in Melissa? What kept you together for this long? I think it’s like being sisters, you experience a lot together and can always learn something from each other and support each other through different times in your life – women are great durational team workers! You’re always working to get better at what you do individually and collectively, pushing each other out of your comfort zone. I really enjoy working with Melissa who thinks very differently from me around creative problem solving. Humour is also key, along with keeping things real and in relation to what’s going on outside the collective. How did you change throughout the years? As a person, as a music band and as artists? We talk a lot, keeping each other up to date with what we’re thinking and experiencing as each of us live in different cities, which is really great, as you’re hanging around with worldling people from diverse scenes. Recently, I felt the need to develop one small element of COS further, so I zoomed into one part of our gesamtkunstwerk, the objectinstruments (self-made musical instruments, e-shoe and High Heeled Shoe guitar) and built on this knowledge we’d created together. After completing my PhD I started as Professor at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Arts, Norwegian University of Science and Technology. I love teaching and doing COS simultaneously, it seems like a natural balance and sharing with the next generations is important. All of your work is creative work. From where do you get your inspiration? What drives you?

If art becomes a concern for all of society it has the potential to bring about positive change and solve parts of the world’s current ecological crisis. COS do this through the mediums of sound, text, activ-ism, costume and art/science which culminates a kind of gesamtkunstwerk thinking for life. Your music is also hard to fit into one label. How would you describe it? Socio-political-artistic music. How do you create your music? It’s always changing like everything in COS, right now I’m into recording vocals first without any beats and then Melissa designs the music around the vox, I thought doing things backward for a while could trigger a different kind of song writing and dramaturgy in the songs, away from 4/4 beats and into something more unpredictable and free flowing. The one thing that stays constant is Melissa and My ongoing artistic language expressed via our art and music and our strong and lifelong collaboration on music production with artist, writer and musician Christopher Just, we’re really looking forward to performing with Christopher to celebrate our 20 year collaboration at Magic Mirror, Sziget! Mention a few women who inspire you and the reason why you chose them. Carolee Schneeman: her courage to challenge politics and sexuality. Yoko Ono: understanding con-tinuous peaceful actions can bring about radical change over time. Greta Thunberg: unwavering belief and drive to ‘save the world by changing the rules’. Are you inspired by men as well? Absolutely. By Julian Assange, I just wish the world was ready to appreciate him.

What are the most urgent and most important questions of today in your opinion? Climate change. Reducing meat consumption by at least 50% or becoming vegan. Communing cities to create small urban farms where we can grow our own food. Eradicating harmful chemical sprays (e. g. Monsanto’s round up) from our food crops/soil. Reducing industrial farming practices and getting more people to produce the world’s food locally in collective communities. Stopping the production of plastic, developing biodegradable substitutes like bioplastics. Mission driven research into mushrooms that eat plastics from our landfills. Cleaning up our oceans. Reducing industrial scale fishing, giving the oceans a break so that they can revive and thrive. Reducing sound pollution in our oceans which is harmful to all ocean animals. How much do you know about Hungary? As someone from outside, what do you perceive about our country? One of my students is Hungarian, Mate Labus from the Trondheim Academy of Fine Arts. He tells me a lot about the Hungarian art and music scene, so I feel pretty up to date on this strong legacy of sound artists and conceptual sound composers since the 60’s who were quite connected with what Zennakis was doing. Actually Mate and his local Budapest collaborating artist Dóra Grőber will join us on stage during an improv session in the COS set at Magic Mirror and I feel it will be quite a reaction to the current situation in Budapest, where I hear there’s a lot of censorship of artists and journalists going on.

ART

A CAVALCADE OF ART

– ARTZONE

Light installations by night, workshops, recycled sculptures and virtual reality presentations by day. ArtZone welcomes every art and design lover with various creative and interactive programs on a beautiful green field. You can discover how you would look in Bauhaus style, you can color the world, and even make a glittery banner. ArtZone is also a great place if you just want to chill – literally, since this is one of the most breezy venues of the festival. Come and create something amazing together! The exhibition Trash Art could not be more revelant as they reflect on the role of water as the base of our existence and our future with huge sculptures and installations made of trash. The performance of TÁP Theatre also revolves around our present: they invite you on a virtual journey, but, instead of modern technology, they only “utilize” actors. By the end of their show, we can guarantee that you will arrive in another world. Henrietta Szira deals with the principles of futuristic cuisine,

31

as well as the Anti-Pasta Manifesto, which pins a trademark of Italian cuisine as not that healthy of a choice. Can you survive without pasta? There will be many more food-related workshops and performances: you can learn how to make bread with Dániel Bozzai, while Andrea Fajgerné Dudás and Eszter Ágnes Szabó will host a Gastro Casino. Yes, you heard that right: play with food! Even if your parents said that you shouldn’t do that when you were a child. Eszter Szabó will prepare one of the most important food items of pirate cuisine called hard tack. You only need water, flour and salt to make this repeatedly baked and thus preserved dish that could mean survival on the seas. While its being made, you can confront your everyday addictions. There is no ArtZone without the participation of galleries. The MoholyNagy University (MOME) gives a taste of suminagashi, a Japanese marble painting technique. They are also organizing a tape art and seed-bomb making workshop in the name of eco-

consciousness – you can use vinyl, wood or a plastic banner as a base to attach old and new magazine magazine cut-outs or wallpaper pieces to it. At the Kurszán Collage Workshop you can create your own surreal picture from the objects you collect at Sziget. Put together a Kandinsky, find the famous painting of Moholy-Nagy among the small pictures, or create your own Bauhaus image with Art Label Budapest. At the creative space of Medence Group you can make and design your own bag out of old plastic banners. You only need to be somewhat crafty to make them – the hardest part of the process will be choosing your pattern. When you finish, you can make a 3D scan of yourself in Bauhaus style – and also experience how you would look on the Main Stage of Sziget. Color the world! Create your own Love Revolution bag! Be eco-conscious and wear your handmade bag with pride! We only need you and your creativity, the rest awaits you at Alkotásutca.

At the jam sessions next to the evening campfire, borders become completely blurred. Diversity is endless here: there will be a band whose pieces are based on voodoo traditions and Beninese folk music, vibrant tunes that faithfully represent Romani tradition, and, naturally, the sounds of the Balkan. An Indian traveling circus launches the party every afternoon with rope dancers, illusionists and acrobats who will dazzle you. Prepare for some carefree fun! Music is not only for listening, but also for sharing and for dancing, regardless of your age or where you are from. The huge campfire in the center of the open tent beckons you to participate in the interactive discussions, jam sessions, and dancing. Following

the debut of the Caravan Tent last year, the venue reiceved got a new name – Global Village – as well as an open tent filled with an international crowd of dancers, acrobats, DJs and various other performing artists. Cross borders in Global Village and

a traveling circus from Rajasthan. They present you with a vibrant, colorful world full of surprises and dramatic moments – the latter will be dissolved in laughter. Let yourself be impressed! In addition to performers from Europe, the concert program’s diversity will be ensured by the presence of bands from South America, Africa and Asia. The organizers have invited a number of internationally renowned artists as well as upcoming new talents. Evenings consist of three main parts: two concerts will be held to get the party started, followed by a jam session together with the performer of the evening, then comes the major concert and a DJ set lasting until dawn. “Tell me what you’re singing, and I tell you who you are”, stated renowned Hungarian music educator and composer, Zoltán Kodály. However, even he might be surprised during the concerts of Global Village. The site that functions as a musical melting pot also presents ensembles whose members came from different countries with different musical traditions to create a common sound. Such bands are The Turbans, Ezza, Les violons barbares and Fanfara Station. San Salvador

goes back to the roots of Occitan music, while the Russian Dobranotch proudly represents klezmer. The Hungarian music scene is represented by two projects: Zoord feat. Balázs Szokolay Dongó & Kornél Mogyoró as well as the Cimbalom Brothers. The main performers, whose show begins every evening at 23:15, are regular guests of large international festivals. Originally from Medellín (Colombia), Puerto Candelaria orchestra has always evoked strong emotions from its listeners at its high-profile concerts. In addition to Moorish musical traditions, the members of La Banda Morisca are also inspired by flamenco and gnawa as well as rock music from Jerez and Andalusia. This special fusion takes you straight into the enchanted world of spices, colors, sounds and movements. The unbeatable violin virtuoso, Félix Lajkó has tried himself out in many genres and styles. In 2019, he was looking for a new challenge: new musical fabrics, new musicians, new moods. If you are into musical delicacies, the concert of BIM from Benin is definitely a place for you. They base their trip-hop and pop-rock music

on voodoo traditions and Beninese folk music. The result of this magical alignment of seven musicians and singers is this special group. Bohemian Betyars and Parno Graszt have a huge fan base, but they have only been working together since 2017. Their goal is simple: to introduce and pass on folk music traditions rich in Hungarian and Romani elements to the young generation. Their unique viewpoint is currently unmatched. Their energyfilled speed-folk freak-punk concerts, nicely complemented by Romani folk music, is an exciting event that you cannot miss. Joyful moments, positive energy, poetry and intoxicating melodies – these are the characteristics of Luca Bassanese and his orchestra who masterfully combine Italian hits with the traditional tarantella. In case this immense variety is not enough for you, stay until 4 in the morning dancing to the DJ sets. Performers are as follows: Colombian DJ KillaBeatMaker, Cyprian DJ’s Koulla P. + Kraouu, Belgian DJ Gaetano, Breton DJ Wonderbraz, French DJ Jet Lag, the Italian producer and DJ Ghiaccoli & Branzini, and the Swiss Mambo Chick.

TENT

THE POWER OF DIVERSITY – TENT WITHOUT BORDERS

27

TENT

It is no coincidence that the Tent Without Borders was put next to Global Village, since their message of promoting the power lying in diversity is the same. We are capable of everything together! Migration, intercultural relations and human rights are just a few of the topics that arise at this venue. With the help of the Sziget_Portal, borders vanish: you can be at the festival and at a refugee camp on the island of Lesbos, or at San Pedro Sula, one of the most dangerous cities around the world, at the same time. UNICEF Hungary will hold workshops about children’s rights – their ambassador, Emi Mahmoud, who is one of the most powerful women in the world, will also pay a visit. Moreover, the National Museum of the History of Immigration from Paris will present its exhibition, Music Migrations. For the fourth year, the Tent Without Borders shows how colorful and diverse the world is, how important it is to pay attention to Human Rights in everyday life, how people live in refugee camps, and how to help those who are forced to leave their homeland or have to live as a repressed minority in their own country. Causa Creations offers a diverse range of digital & analog games in which people engage with each other, experience and express empathy, and learn to communicate through ingame actions. Naturally, their games are called Empathy Games – Playing with Others has political and social connotations. The National Museum of the History of Immigration from Paris will present its exhibition 'Paris-London Music Migrations (1962-1989)’ through a wide range of programs. The exhibition showcases how the music scene of the two cities functioned as a protector of independence and freedom as well as its role in fighting against racism. Further programs include a fanzine-making workshop, a time travel in music with the help of a scopitone, as well as the performances of Ivory Coast dancer Jean Paul Mehansio. What are the challenges and what is the beauty of people from different cultures living together? Co-led by the Swiss organization Terre des hommes and Syrian-born journalist Rania Ali, the project entitled Living Together is documenting such experiences with the help of volunteers. Join them! UNICEF Hungary presents its initiative ‘Your future depends on you! – A generation without limits’.

Established last year, this popular online campaign is fighting the exclusion of people who are ‘different’ in some way from the majority of society. Moreover, the organization is holding interactive workshops about children’s rights. One of the newcomers of the Tent is UNHCR Hungary. They are inviting a couple of young refugees who are living in Hungary to talk about their experiences and their struggles. One of the goodwill ambassadors of the organization is the Sudanese poet Emi Mahmoud, who will also take the Main Stage at the festival. A CONNECTION THROUGH CONTINENTS – SZIGET_PORTAL The Sziget_Portal is probably going to be one of the most popular new features of the festival. The American Shared_Studios provides Szitizens with a unique experience by giving you the chance to talk to people with whom you would probably never meet otherwise. You will have the opportunity to listen to other people’s stories and discover the diversity of their experiences. The Portal allows people separated by great distances and differences to collaborate, talk, and play together. Each time you enter the Portal, you’ll find yourself face to face with the live, full-body image of someone occupying another, distant Portal, as if you were in the same room. You can get to know ReFOCUS Media Labs who are dedicated to create a network of media labs to equip refugees (in this case, those living in the refugee camp on the island of Lesbos) with modern media creation skills. A container

furnished with cameras and screens, Sziget_Portal will allow you to get an almost-firsthand experience about their stories. You can also get to know the work of a youth organization from San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The city is one of the most dangerous and violent places in the world, where it’s especially hard to keep children in the education system. Have you ever heard of the Silicon Savannah? Now you get the chance to, say, have a chat over lunch with the young female entrepreneurs who are usually having said lunch with top managers from Brooklyn over a virtual roundtable. What are you reading right now (or what was the last book you have read)? Can you imagine a better and more simple topic through which you can learn more about a stranger? You can get to know the people gathered at the Portal located in Astana, Kazahstan through such questions. Music creates unity – you may have already experienced that as a Szitizen. However, you can test the validity of this statement by meeting people from different time zones. Palestinian dabke dancers will check in from Gaza to involve you in their performance, which is followed by a conversation about what unity means for you and for them. The country’s first orchestra consisting only of women will perform a show from the Afghan National Institute in Kabul. Before and after their concert, which lasts two hours with one intermission, you can talk to the members of the orchestra.

THEATRE

CACOPHONY, TENSION, THEN SILENCE

Following the last concert on the Main Stage, something grandiose starts every night next to A38. Les Commandos Percu, a group of international artists perform their extraordinary show entitled 'Silence!'. How can you rebuild the world when everything have collapsed around us and nothing has remains? Prepare yourself to wait through silence that you can’t ignore. One thing is for sure: it will be worth the wait.

20 25

Les Commandos Percu

GIANT STREET THEATRE AROUND THE FIRE

Raw, tactile effects tailored to our ancient senses and fears – drums and fire on the stage and among the audience. If you want to summarize the performance of Les Commandos Percu, you could describe it as a 360º-experience of organized chaos, a play of music and light that everyone needs to see. This group of international artists is specialized in street performances. The show they are bringing to Sziget is entitled Silence!, so it may be surprising that they are also preparing to play very loud and intense sounds. Recycled waste and dynamic music create one large unit in which everybody can find what they are looking for. Why do we need so much technology around us when you can play music with full force until you are drenched in sweat? Humanity has always been searching for meaning in fire throughout our history. But where does this fire lead us? A number of questions arise – your only task is to find answers to them in the show. Or just let yourself be taken away by the momentum of sound effects. So what will happen exactly? People dressed up in costumes made of metal, strange shapes and sharp lines move forward among the audience. Powerful rhythms intersperse with silence create a tension that will not fade. Everything you see here is an instrument that they can play. The boundary between chaos and music is very thin and every drumbeat leads to one point: enjoy the silence. When the countdown ends, the stage becomes a large, flaming volcano, freeing endless energies. A huge campfire that we can dance around with the performers who have been freed from their chains, enjoying the silence together.

Malta.

MORE THAN WE COULD EVER TELL.

MALTA, GOZO, COMINO The Nr. 1 gay destination in Europe Malta has the first place on the Rainbow Europe Index in 2019. The significant positive changes have propelled the country to the top of ILGA-Europe’s list: people are becoming more and more accepting of LGBTQ culture, while the government has passed a couple of laws in recent years to make it official. It’s no surprise that Malta is one of the most popular destination among gay tourists. Maltese people welcome travelers with their fabled hospitality, and they will gladly help you discover Malta, Gozo and Camino. You will feel like you are in heaven. The members of the local gay community are happy to share tips on the best restaurants, cafés, bars, nightclubs and boutiques, as well as gay-friendly hotels, that are definitely worth a visit. The upcoming entertainment programs and parties are practically mandatory: the most colorful LGBTQ event, Malta Pride Week, will be held between 6–14 September 2019, while the parade in Valletta is going to take place 13 September 2019.

The gay-friendly venues and businesses of Malta are collected on a website entitled gaymalta.com: a fully updated event calendar, local news, a list of open gay bars as well as a bunch of useful information await.
