Dear Readers, I highly recommend this very special booklet about the programs of Sziget to everyone: to regular guests who already had the chance to enjoy being part of the ever-growing, diverse crowd that has been having its annual gathering for 23 years now and also to first-time visitors just starting to discover the magic of Sziget. 23 years ago we started Sziget with the motto “everything’s free but nothing’s obligatory” and we’re still trying to stay true to this philosophy. Even at the beginning, we didn’t want to create another ordinary festival but rather an exciting cultural destination where diversity and accepting and respecting other’s opinions are core values. These values cannot only make the days spent at our ‘Festival Republic’ nicer and happier, but also your everyday lives. I’m convinced that the unique atmosphere emerging from this friendly and open environment was a contributing factor in Sziget winning the title of Best Major Festival at the European Festival Awards twice. However, I’ve never considered bragging a credible tool of the trade, so I encourage you to select your own schedule and to come and see for yourselves why Sziget attracts hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world to gather every summer on an otherwise uninhibited piece of land, the Island of Freedom.

Hello freedom, hello Sziget! At Sziget Festival you can truly experience being on the ‘Island of Freedom’ and certainly not because the logo says so. I had the chance to attend Sziget last year for the first time and I realized the true meaning of the expression ‘Island of Freedom’ and how great it is to have careless fun and just feel good for a few days. It doesn’t matter and nobody cares about who you are and where you’ve come from; the only important thing is to feel good and forget your problems for one week. Sziget is a place where you aren’t only able to enjoy yourself, but you can also relax and get to know some new friends, too. If I’d have to give a short description of Sziget, I’d quote my favorite movie and say that it’s a place where everybody leaves their tags by the coat check. What can you expect at Sziget this year? By browsing our special issue, you will be able to select the most interesting programs that await you at the Festival. Of course, in our opinion the brand new programs of the Magic Mirror Tent are a must-see. As in every year, the most exciting part will be the night show when David Pereira and Jack Woodhead will dazzle us with their fantastic show – you can find a brief interview with them in this issue. I wish everyone endless fun and unforgettable experiences on the Island of Freedom! Zsolt Erdei

Magic Mirror

Beetween 12-16 of August

Magic Mirror is full of programs all day long – Check out our weekly schedule! 15:00 Film program – focusing on immigrants Hosted by Kristian Petersen (film producer, director and university teacher from Berlin) 16:30 Shine bright like a diamond: Vogue dance workshop in front of the tent led by Andrew Bába 17:00 Talk show with Kristóf Steiner 19:00 Stand-up comedy in English 21:00 Live concerts 23:00 THE TRIP – BERLINESQUE CABARET Performers: David Pereira (ES), Jack Woodhead (UK), Remi Martin (D), Miss Crash (USA), Nathalie & Jakob (D-F), Mandy (USA), Mario Espanol (CH) Director: Markus Pabst – BASE Berlin (D) 24:00 Party until dawn

There are no taboos Sziget is the Island of Freedom. Sziget is the Island of Diversity. Sziget is the Island of Openness. Each year more and more Szitizens (visitors) arrive from all around the world to share the experience when tens of thousands party together in peace and happiness. At Sziget, you can wear a horsehead mask, you can have blue hair, your face can be full of piercings, you can wear a cocktail dress or a stretched-out top and no one will bother you. Moreover, your look may even attract people, e. g. especially if you’re dancing frantically in a Winnie the Pooh costume at Rihanna’s concert.

Equality is an important priority of Sziget and that’s why the Magic Mirror Tent is present every year at the Festival. The queer venue of Sziget changes its face at different times of the day. In the afternoon, you can listen to talks with famous and not-so-famous guests about human rights and the position of minorities, followed by film screenings that concentrate on migrants and refugees. The evening program includes live concerts and vaudeville shows with acrobats, illusionists and transvestites. After that comes the inevitable party until the sun comes up. There are no taboos in the Magic Mirror Tent – you can be who you are. A small glimpse into the programs

The main focus of the films at Magic Mirror will be refugees – you could hardly find

Magic Mirror

in the a topic that is more current or generates more arguments these days. Last year we experienced the challenges of the refugee crisis in Hungary from up close and although the situation is much less dire than it was back then, you can still hear about it almost every day on the news. Of course, there will be films more closely related to the LGBTQ community, e. g. TRANSITION, a selection of films from the Vienna International Queer Minorities Film Festival. Yavuz Kurtulmus, founder and director of the festival will also be among the guests. Kristóf Steiner, a well-known Hungarian gay figure and writer will be the host of a series of talk shows every afternoon. Over the years Kristóf had been a presenter for the Hungarian music channel VIVA and acted in several popular films. He moved to Israel a few years ago, but he regularly writes articles for the

Tent Hungarian editions of Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire. He also published three memoirs and most recently a vegan cookbook. Having such a colorful and creative personality, Kristóf will be a wonderful host of the talks that are centered around the different aspects of human rights. One of the most interesting topics will be “We are open” – Gay-friendly hetero places and ‘hetero-friendly’ gay places. The three guests include Hubert Hlatky-Schlichter (owner of TüTü, a so-called ‘open-minded’ bar), Márk Linczényi (singer of the band The Kolin), Egon Mihály Budai (representing the NEKI Legal Defence Bureau). Come and ask your own questions! If you would like to enjoy more of a lighter entertainment, the stand-up comedy shows take place every day at 7pm. The best comedians from all around the globe flew here to make you laugh. Don’t

be afraid even if English is not your first language – this is a good way to practice the listening at least! Of course, Sziget wouldn’t be a festival without concerts. From a David Bowie tribute concert to a performance dedicated to Marlene Dietrich, Magic Mirror has a live concert scheduled for every evening, including Hungarian girl band The PinUps. After the concerts, performances of the Berlinesque Cabaret await the audience: acrobats, illusionists, singers and transvestites all come together for a mesmerizing production that captivates your soul. Following the vaudevillian fun begins the real party to tear the house down. Shake your hips, move your butt, lift your hands up in the air – whatever your signature move is, the only important thing is to have fun!

Magic Mirror

Boys at Sziget They are young, talented and good-looking. David Pereira and Jack Woodhead will perform on the stage of Magic Mirror every night with the Berlinesque Cabaret. David is an acrobat, dancer and model, while Jack plays piano, sings and also composes music. Perhaps it’s strange that they don’t expect their audience to like them, rather their main goal is to shock them and make them forget their everyday problems. Let’s get to know this unique pair a little better!

What do you want to give to your audience with your performances? Jack: A timeless moment where one forgets about everyday thoughts or problems, particularly with the help of laughter. David: It depends. But a good time always. If I can make them forget their daily troubles and stress, that is already an accomplishment

Photo: Osman Balkan Photography

What do you like about being on stage? Jack: Overall, it gives me the opportunity to explore and express a part of my personality which I probably wouldn’t be able to do off stage. When I’m not on stage people might think I’m crazy. David: It can’t be described. It’s a call. How important it is for you to be loved by your audience? Jack: I don’t aim to be loved by the audience. I hugely respect the audience and I aim to entertain them. When I hear the audience laughing and enjoying the show, then I feel good and love what I do! David: I don’t expect to be loved by the audience. I need to do my job right and hopefully give them something that they can take home with themselves.

You have an incredible body. How much do you work out a day? Jack: Hahaha! Try jumping around a stage for 2 hours every night in high heels; it’s a workout. David: My workout is the practices and the performances. I rarely train really. I hope it is not a touchy subject: are you single? Do you have a type? Jack: Haha! Not, it’s not a touchy subject. Yes, I’m single. When I was younger I thought I had a type, but I evidently don’t. I guess my type is someone that surprises me, is a strong character and makes me laugh! David: I am taken. I am lucky since my boyfriend, Unai, is my type. Being in the show business and keeping up creativity levels can be exhausting. How can you relax? What do you do when you go for a holiday? Jack: I am actually quite good at doing nothing… well, for an hour or so. I can lie in the sun and convince myself to read a book, but after 30 minutes I’m already distracted by my own thoughts and

ready to take a walk, make a show or have a drink! David:I spend time with friends, sometimes smoke and listen to some nice music, however the best relaxation is not taking anything too seriously. Things usually go the way they should. How does a perfect day for you look like? Jack: Filled with friends, love, sunshine, amazing food, being creative, and probably wine or gin. David: PRODUCTIVE for me. You are pretty young yet you have achieved a lot already. What are your future goals? Jack: My principal goal never really changes. I’m always trying to find projects that feel sincere and where I can grow as a person and as an artist. As it turns out, I’m now composing a lot of music for theatre shows which is a real treat for me and I hope to continue with it. David: Follow my passions and always being honest to myself. The rest comes with the work. What is your biggest dream? Jack: To remain excited and intrigued about life… which I sometimes fail to do. David: Help the world with whatever I do. Have you ever been to Budapest? Are you excited about performing at Sziget Festival? Jack: I’ve never been to Budapest but I have only ever heard wonderful things about the city! And, I’m SO excited to be performing at Sziget! It’s such an incredibly beautiful festival! I’m thoroughly looking forward to this magical week! David: I have never been to Budapest but I can’t wait! I know it’s a gorgeous place, and I’m looking forward to walking the streets, eating, and enjoying my time there. About the festival, I am as excited as the guests that bought their tickets already. Let’s rock and have fun!

Magic Mirror

“Mirror, mirror on the wall…”

– talk show series with Kristóf Steiner in the Magic Mirror Tent at Sziget “Did I say something wrong? Oops, I didn’t know I couldn’t talk about sex” – says Madonna in her song titled ‘Human Nature’. Even in 2016 it is still a taboo to talk about homosexuality, porn, transgender people and transvestites or non-traditional female roles. Now is the time to stop living under a rock! I am deeply honored that the organizers of Sziget have chosen me to organize and lead the talks in the LGBTQ tent this year. We will try to be sassy, thought-provoking, heartwarming and honest throughout the seven-day event. During these talk shows you can also ask questions from my guests – I would be honored to see you in the “mirror tent.”

13th August, Saturday – “Divas and anti-divas”

15th August, Monday – “Gender change”

How did female performers and other strong women influence LGBTQ culture? Why do we like energetic and opinionated feminists so much and why do they have a stronger influence on our subculture than men in similar positions? A little surprise: at midnight I am going to play a 1-hour Madonna DJ set with my dear friend and regular partner in crime, Ernie Tisch. Besides the greatest hits, the track list also includes unfairly forgotten dance classics, demos and B-side tracks. Guests: Bence Csalár (“Blogger of the Year”, pop-culture connoisseur), Réka Szentesi (fashion and costume historian), Péter Szűcs (journalist, fashion expert, travelling photo blogger), Kata Oltai (art historian and curator)

Gender-role change in popular culture, film, theatre and literature. Let it be Virginia Woolf’s Orlando or a lame American comedy, changing someone’s gender is often the main motif in numerous stories. It is a topic that has been on the minds of artists from the beginning of time – it used to be quite a common practice for men to play female roles on stage. But how are things nowadays? Guests: Nimrod Dagan (Israeli actor), Zsolt Frenkó (director and drama teacher), Éva Szombat (photographer) and Judit Jávor (drama teacher)

12th August, Friday – “We are open”

31

Besides discussing the issue of gay-friendly hetero places and “heterofriendly” gay places, we will also have a chat about the existence and the acceptance of different subcultures, let it be immigrants, romani or transgender people. How open are restaurants, bars or the people on the streets towards someone who is simply “different”? Guests: Hubert Hlatky-Schlichter (owner of “open-minded” bar TüTü), Márk Linczényi (singer of the band The Kolin), Mihály Egon Budai (representing “NEKI” Human Rights Office) and Miklós Bán (Nyitottak vagyunk)

14th August, Sunday – “Lesbian visibility”

The big question is: where are the lesbians? Pride festivals are male-dominated all around the world, lesbian events are usually organized separately from Pride programs and you can find substantially less lesbians than gay men at gay-friendly clubs and bars. Why is it that the LGBTQ society is mainly identified with men? Guests: Angéla Dienes (coach, behavior analyst, communication expert), Cintia Karlik (spokesperson of Budapest Pride), Linda Gellért and Orsolya Nagypál (member of the band The PinUps)

16th August, Tuesday – “What is porn?”

Experimental, “artistic” porno films and films that are almost sex films – where are the borders? What makes something porn and what doesn’t? When does it worth it to get totally naked or to have actual sex in front of the camera? Exclusive Hungarian premiere of international experimental homoerotic short films. Guests: Yair Hochner (film director, pioneer of experimental gay porn, director of TLVFest), Csaba Tóth (movie critic, journalist) photo: Máté Czabán

Magic Mirror

in the Magic Mirror Magic Mirror never disappoints when it comes to its film programs. Perhaps the most exciting part of it will be a three-day selection of films from the LGBTQ film festivals of Vienna, Berlin and Tel Aviv. Daily programs include discussions hosted by German director, producer and university teacher Kristian Petersen from 3pm. The main focus of the films will be refugees and migration. On Friday, 12th August at 3pm there will be a screening of Sasha, a German feature film from 2010. Our title character lives in Germany in a homophobic South Slavic family of refugees. His parents encourage him to attend a prestigious music academy where he has to deal with the contrast of the modern, open-minded attitude of the Germans versus his hot-headed, traditionally macho family from the Balkans. When he discovers that he is in love with his piano teacher, his life takes a huge turn. Cultures clash in this passionate story where a life built of small lies for the sake of one’s own family comes crashing down. Directed by Dennis Todorovic, this bittersweet coming-of-age and coming-out movie won the Audience Award of the Czech Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in 2010. Among the films you can also find the award-winning documentary of Klára Trencsényi, titled Reményvasút (Train to Adulthood). The film is about the workers of the Budapest Children’s Railway that originally employed pioneers (the equivalent of scouts in the communist countries) and it is still managed by teenagers. Our three protagonists, railway maniac Gergő and a pair of twins, Kármen and Viktor all come from families that were torn apart by financial instability. The film follows them for two years at an age when choosing a career and dealing with usual teenage problems is more than enough. You may remember the director as the cinematographer of Hot Men Cold Dictatorships whose current work has won the Golden Dove Award at the 58th DOK Leipzig Film Festival. You can watch this anachronistic utopia about the lives of three teenagers at 1:30pm on Friday, 12th August. On Tuesday, 16th August at 3pm the best documentary of this year’s Berlinale, Swedish director Sara Jordeno’s Kiki will be screened. It is about the political subculture, vogue dance competitions and civil rights battles of the ballroom scene of New York with Twiggy Pucci Garçon, a host of Kiki as the main protagonist. Kiki is a special gathering place of Afro-American LGBTQ youth. While the members of the mainly transgender group are frequently harassed by the police, lot of them were thrown out from their family homes and often they are forced to prostitute themselves, Kiki is a safe haven for them where they can express themselves through dancing.

Cure your hangover with some laughter at Sziget Comedy It strengthens your immune system, increases your energy levels and soothes pain – we mean laughter, of course. For those looking for an ailment for the inconvenient side effects (the usual headaches and tiredness) following yesterday’s party, the Sziget Comedy is the perfect solution in the Magic Mirror. Sziget Festival’s guests include international stand-up comedy stars this year to create a terrific atmosphere. The host of the events is David Thompson whom you may remember as the voice of Tinky Winky from the kids’ show ‘Teletubbies’. According to The Guardian, David is the king of one-liners – he already made his audience roar with laughter in 33 countries. The list of performers consists mostly of men, but Naomi Hefter, the one female comedian will probably be a great compensation for that. Naomi usually lures in her audience with her own blasphemous and almost unbelievable stories. She debuted at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival and since then she has built a considerable fan-base. ‘One of the funniest men in Great Britain’ – the Radio Times has written about Geoff Whiting. Festival, radio, television – Geoff is totally okay with either form of entertainment. Whiting will not be the only one with this name, since Geoff Boyz is also coming to Sziget: he was one of the first stand-up comedians to perform in China. According to The Daily Telegraph, his Robert De Niro parody

is a one-of-a-kind experience. We can only hope that he performs this notable piece for us, too. A big name and an even bigger person: Colin Cole, the favorite of the Australians is more than 2 meters tall. His appearance and his jokes are both mesmerizing for his audience who only turn away their eyes from him when they are slapping their knees from laughter. If the line-up wasn’t diverse enough for you up until now, let’s talk a little bit about a crazy Canadian. Wes Zaharuk is the master of physical comedy. His style is a mix-up of Twin Peaks and Cirque du Soleil, at least according to The Toronto Sun. The list also includes performances of Quincy Comedian, Matt Welcome, Jeremy O’Donnell, Steve N Allen and Tim Clark. Don’t think too much about whose performance you come to see – choose a time where your concert schedule isn’t so busy and just enjoy what Sziget Comedy can offer. Great entertainment is guaranteed.

Heavenly Shift 10 AUG 13:00

Another must-watch is Mom and Other Loonies in the Family (Anyám és más futóbolondok a családból) which follows the history of a family through a hundred years and four generations. 94-years-old Mother moves twenty-seven times in her life. She is a woman blessed with a turbulent nature and an exemplary sense of danger who drags her husband and daughter through the country whenever she sniffs anything hazardous. And in the last hundred years, there was plenty of that in store.

27

Márk Bodzsár’s first film is a charming black comedy that offers an eerie insight into the everyday lives of a rather extraordinary ambulance crew. In Heavenly Shift (Isteni műszak) a nighttime driver and a doctor decide to help certain patients kill themselves. They make a blooming business out of illegal euthanasia, but when a young doctor comes and reveals their dark secret, everything turns around.

Kills on Wheels 13 AUG 23:00 Directed by Attila Till, Kills on Wheels (Tiszta szívvel) is an action comedy where nothing is what it seems like at first sight. The movie is about two disabled teenagers who are looking for a reason to live, so they team up with the mafia and a wheel-chaired hitman. There is no border between fantasy and reality, and while we are drawn into one shoot-out after the other, we get to know the lives of disabled people a little better.

Drifter 10 AUG 15:00

Mom and Other Loonies in the Family 12 AUG 13:00

If you haven’t seen Liza, the Fox-Fairy (Liza, a rókatündér) yet, you are truly missing out on something. It is typically the kind of movie that is not to be watched sitting on the couch at home, but rather with a bunch of old friends – or new-found acquaintances at Sziget. Our main protagonist, Liza, the pretty, but extremely modest nurse discovers with the help of the ghost of Japanese singer Tomy Tani that she is a cursed fox-fairy, a kind of Japanese demon. Director Károly Ujj Mészáros has created a cult movie full of visual jokes that is equally able to make you cry and laugh. It is a fairy tale for adults about the hardships of choosing a partner, about the battles of mysteries and rationality, and of course about Finnish western and carp in maple syrup.

Drifter is a unique production: it was filmed through five years with amateur actors by a two-member staff. It is a documentary, but it is not; it is a feature film and it is not. Our main character Ricsi is always forced by the people that surround him to – literally and figuratively – pull the brakes. But like every cool guy, he doesn’t want to live up to anyone’s expectations. He wants to be somebody, right now, right here, at the age of seventeen. Car rodeos without driver’s licenses, partying till dawn, running from the cops and constant arguments with parents are what his life consists of.

Car Park 16 AUG 13:00

Liza, the Fox-Fairy 11 AUG 17:00

Since #szigetcinema was a huge success last year, the Hungarian Film Fund and Sziget Festival are partnering up for a second time to showcase the most popular Hungarian movies of the past few years. The program consists of sixteen films which will be screened with English subtitles every afternoon. Besides the fact that the organizers put together a highly entertaining program, when is it a better time to get to know Hungarian cinema a little more if not now?

Since we already brought up cars, we shall also mention the film Car Park (Parkoló). The film is full of twists and turns in which two men are fighting for a parking spot in a downtown lot. But of course, their fight is not only about where they park, rather about the clash of two different world-views. Besides the films listed above, the following ten will be screened at #szigetcinema free of charge: The Wednesday Child (Szerdai gyerek), Loop (Hurok), My Night, Your Day (Az éjszakám a nappalod), Swing, Home Guards (Veszettek), Stand-up Duel (Dumapárbaj), Weekend (Víkend), Think of Me (Gondolj rám), What Ever Happened to Timi (Megdönteni Hajnal Tímeát), Argo 2.

Theater

All Sziget is a stage, and all the visitors merely players Dream coaching, dance performances and a simulation piece are all among Sziget’s theatre programs this year. You really can’t complain about having nothing to choose from, since the performances will go on every day from 2pm until 11pm. Most of the companies are Hungarian, but you can also find Irish, Italian, British, Argentinian and Dutch performers. ‘Daily Dream Coaching’ is a sleeping installation created by the Sleeping Beauty Project in which festival guests can take part in guided sleep meditation. Come and rediscover sleeping with them! Animal instincts, brutality, physical strength and beauty – if you’d like to leave your comfort zone behind, an Argentinian performance titled ‘Los Cuerpos’ will be your your jam. By combining the eroticism and grace of their bodies with raw, instinctive reactions, Ramiro Cortez and Federico Fontán are pushing the physical boundaries between themselves. Their performance is a must-see, even if you’re just interested in watching some beautiful bodies. The audience is encouraged to participate in Corey Baker’s piece ‘Headphones’ in which the British dancer parodies various musical styles and typical dance moves. Don’t be afraid to show the others how that strange guy was dancing at last night’s party! Would you participate in a performance? Brainstorm with others? Try a simulation which considers ‘normal’ a catastrophe? If your answer is yes, then ‘(What) A Wonderful Void’ by Talking Straight in collaboration with Maxim Gorki Theatre will be the perfect entertainment for you. Happiness and pain, endings and beginnings, presence and absence – the great dualities of life are presented in ‘Ember’ by Ziya Azazi. The Turkish artist uses fire to evoke the main focus of the piece which is transience. If your nights aren’t heated enough, this is the place to be.

Short, concise, punchy – TED at Sziget x

Even if you don’t have a favorite, you’ve surely watched a few interesting TEDx talks. Education, culture, love, whatever was the topic, the talks and the talkers themselves must have been among the most interesting and versatile ones you can find. Even if you don’t necessarily agree with the talker’s opinions, you have to admit that they’re professionals who know what they’re doing. There will definitely be at least one topic that you’re interested in, so come and see what TEDx at Sziget can offer! Besides stories from North Korea, you can learn the five ground rules of meditation, have a glimpse at the secret lives of big cities and get to know a little bit more about the inspiring effects of coincidence. The talks take place every day at 5pm from Friday, 12th August to Tuesday, 16th August. A full schedule of talks can be found in the tent; the ones listed below are the ones that we think you really shouldn’t miss. Ádám Molnár: Hero of the Day

25

We all love everyday heroes – those that simply make this world a better place with their actions. Perhaps you don’t even know about it that you were such a hero for someone, but we’re a 100% sure that it has happened. But what if you knew about the importance of your action – would you do it again? Would you be the hero of my day?

Csenge Zalka: A tale about the power of stories in communitybuilding

Csenge Zalka is an international storyteller. When abroad, she tells Hungarian tales in three languages; in exchange, she brings home stories from other nations and cultures. She receives both the Kelner and the Fulbright Scholarship while representing Hungary in many of the international storyteller organizations of the world. A real storyteller’s power lies in talking to everyone and linking together thousands of colorful artists from a dozen countries. Jadd Tank: LIBERTÉ TOUJOURS

What is freedom and why do we need it so much? Who do we want to free ourselves from? The chase never stops. When we win, we celebrate and wave our flag. But the circle never closes – the chase begins again. It’s grotesque, but beautiful. This dance performance tells the story of a 20-year-old Arab boy from

New York and his never ending pursuit of freedom. If ‘Liberté Toujours’ doesn’t really mean anything to you, don’t worry! It’s totally okay. Perhaps by the end of the performance, you will have a deeper understanding. Tamás Hovanyecz: Honest and conscious businesses

Have you ever had to pretend to be someone else? Millions of people fall into such a trap every single day when they set foot in their workplace. What happens when we create a space where you can be who you want to be? How can we utilize the creativity inside us in order to build businesses that also have a positive effect on our society? Come and let’s discover those networks and approaches that are not based on standardization and let’s create a happier world with their help. Most of the talks are 20 minutes long, but there will also be 30-minute presentations with a 30-minute period for your questions.

Circus comes to Sziget Australian, French, Canadian, German and of course, Hungarian talents will provide the entertainment at Cirque du Sziget in two circus tents with more than 500 seats each and also an open-air stage. After last year’s roaring success, it was a rather tough job to put together a similarly impressive program, but the organizers certainly didn’t fail their audience. Choose a performance and let yourself be amazed! RECIRQUEL – Paris De Nuit

Bulging bicepses, perfectly round bums and steamy summer nights in Paris – Bence Vági’s company, Recirquel will treat you to all of the aforementioned delicacies every night from 11pm in their performance titled Paris at Night. What can you expect? The blazing world of 1930s vaudeville shows, right in front of your eyes. We mean that quite literally since the acrobats perform their numbers on or around the tables where the audience sits. The performance will be complimented by jazz musicians and singers to enhance the periodic atmosphere. The company received a standing ovation in Paris so it would be a mistake to miss it. SOAP

Everyone knows what acrobatics between the sheets mean. But acrobatics in the bathtub? Oh yeah!

The aerialists, acrobats, jugglers, singers and dancers of the company More Promotions perform a memorable routine with the help of no less than seven bathtubs. A creation of Markus Pabst and Maximilan Rambaek, the piece combines the traditions of circus, theatre and operettas brilliantly. The soaking wet performers await their audience every night at 11:30pm. CIRCA – BEYOND

Cross the borders between reason and madness, humans and animals, logical thinking and dreams with the company of CIRCA! Carefree entertainment and constant uncertainty awaits you: what kind of place will you end up at – will it be a cabaret, a zoo, a mental hospital or the stage itself? You can discover that every evening from 6pm with the seven members of CIRCA.

École de Cirque de Québec – LA SOUCHE

The students of the Quebec Circus School were given the assignment to prepare a piece according to their field of expertise and in accordance to their personality in less than twenty hours. The performance got its title after a pub near the school that is a popular meeting point among the students. You can stop searching for an afternoon activity since the combined performance of the Quebec School and the Imre Baross Circus School starts every day at 5:00 pm. Imre Baross Circus Arts School – THE BALL

A magic ball – that is all that the students of the Imre Baross Circus Arts School need. As they pass the ball around, it gives way to a new feeling every time: it induces escape, reconciles opponents, encourages selflessness. You can be part of this

This performance is a spectacular combination of sensuality, of beautiful and terrifying elements, apples, humor, absurdity, aerialist stunts and the power of the wind. Every day at 7:00 pm on the open-air stage. LES DUDES – LET’S DO THIS!

Juggling is easy – anybody is able to get the gist of it with a little bit of practice. It is also not that difficult to juggle while standing on someone else’s shoulders. But when a monocycle and some fire is also involved, that’s when it gets tricky; the outcome can be amazing or a catastrophe. The Canadian duo Les Dudes will try to accomplish the former every day at 4:00 pm on the open-air stage – come and see if they succeed.

Strangers in my garden

Cross your borders! The act of creating and crossing borders has been around since the existence of humanity. What kind of natural and artificial borders are there? Are borders perhaps a symbol of fear from others? What do you think: who, when and why someone crosses borders?

21

This French-Hungarian exhibition program is all about borders. The National de l’Histoire de l’Immigration is bringing a travelling exhibition to Sziget to show the history of migration in Europe beginning with the demolition of the Berlin Wall. The exhibited photographs and research results showcase the historical, geopolitical and also the artistic viewpoints. This collection is complemented by the documentary photographs and found objects of the Hungarian Museum of Ethnography. Their interactive exhibition presents the objects found on the Serbian-Hungarian border after the recent wave of migration and asks the questions: what message does a hijab, a toothbrush, a SIM card holder, half a pair of shoes, or a drinking glass made out of a plastic bottle have for you? They invite you for a dialogue to get you to express your opinion, to invoke personal stories through the objects, to discover the 2000-year-long

history of migration of European nations and to get to know the traditions of migrants a little better through playful activities. They encourage you to understand, to feel and to approach borders and those that cross them from different viewpoints with the help of authentic sources, documentaries, performances and discussions with experts. Just a taste of the various programs:

• Ethno fiction – interactive storytelling with the found objects • Strangers in my garden – documentaries about immigrants • Our borders – dress workshop: My story, my dress: 1 story = 1 dress. “Twist, tear, knot, glue, paint, write, express yourself through a dress!” • Passage Hungaria – interactive board game about the 2000 years of migration history in the Carpathian Basin

• Mobility – creating a collective world map about the personal “migrations” of Sziget Szitizens • Roundtable discussion (in English): Economic migration? Economy and migration? New dangers or new chances? It’s quite paradoxical that under the term ‘economic migrant’ we usually mean refugees that are impostors, meaning that they’re not really refugees but people who are only looking for financial benefits. Meanwhile, we also use this expression to identify those “accepted” immigrants that are working in our country or staying here for some other official reason, compared to the unwanted refugees and asylum seekers. Is there a point to such a multilayered expression? If yes, what could it be? Can it be helpful when thinking about the economic effects of migration?
