Bad Axe kicks off 2015 Memorial Parade Saturday By Rich Harp For the Tribune

BAD AXE — Last year, dozens of floats, groups and individuals were in the City of Bad Axe/Huron County 2015 Memorial Parade. And Mayor

Jim Hicks estimated over 3,000 people were in town to see that event. This year’s parade, which will take place Saturday in downtown Bad Axe, is expected to top these numbers. If preparation, planning and

finances determine the success of a parade, there would be no wonder why this Memorial parade will be a success. The parade committee has been working on this celebration for a year. They started planning last year just days after the 2014 parade was over. Plus, Hicks estimated the group spent around $5,000 putting it together and promoting it. The entire parade committee is comprised of volunteer members, many of whom are U.S. veterans. This year’s theme is Wounded Warriors, and the grand marshals will be Korean War veterans. “Our goal is to celebrate our brothers and sisters who have fallen in service,” Hicks said. “That’s what Memorial Day is all about.” Hicks feels quite a few veteran organizations will come from all over to attend the parade. He has spoken to several veterans groups in the state, and he believes many will come from outside the county. It is expected veterans from World War II through present day veterans will attend. In addition, the Blue Star Mothers and the U.S. Coast Guard will march in the parade. Music should be heard throughout the event. The Bad Axe School Band will perform, as well as Canadian bag pipers. The Shriners and their band also will march in the parade. The Bill Denbrock Band will play during a ceremony at the Huron County Veteran’s Memorial. Other parade participants will include some four-legged

walkers. “We have a lot of animal lovers in the parade,” Hicks said, noting Llamas, dogs and horses will wear decorative gear and be part of the festivities. In fact, three prizes will be awarded to the best patriotic dressed/decorated pet. Also on Saturday, WLEW will be set up along the parade route to broadcast the event. The parade committee has enticed youth to be in the parade by offering a best decorated bicycle contest.

TAG’s mission is: “The enrichment of life through active promotion and encouragement of art making and the appreciation of all phases of the arts. As Guild members who believe the arts to be essential to a complete life, we will work to incorporate the arts into the public experience and develop artistic selfrealization through opportunities for growth.” In order to comply with

TAG: Artists gearing up for big show From 4

Members invite the public to meet the artists that are in the upcoming show, and visitors can also take part in a silent auction where they can pick up works of art donated by participating artists. TAG also holds an annual fundraiser, where participating artists create one-of-akind, handmade items that are displayed at a variety of businesses and events throughout the summer — it is a summer-long silent auction, where bids are taken. Winners are announced at Art in the Park. This year’s subject is lighthouses. Some of the creations

will be displayed at the Spring Show. The Spring Show and Exhibit offers visitors the opportunity to see the quality of work local artists produce. The participation of junior high and high school artists is an added bonus. Light refreshments will be served, and TAG members will be on hand to answer questions about the Guild, and the work that is on display. It is a traditional kickoff to the summer season. Port Austin Farmer’s Market opens for the season May 23 By Kate Hessling Assistant News Editor

PORT AUSTIN — May 23 kicks off the popular Port Austin Farmer’s Market, which will operate for 21 consecutive Saturdays. “This is the 11th season, and the popularity grows year upon year,” said Joyce Stanek of the Greater Port Austin Area Chamber of Commerce. And the excitement is building. “Either on Facebook, or they’ll send little notes ... (saying) they can’t wait,” Stanek said of some of the vendors the chamber has heard from this spring. “ We have about 400 registered vendors,” she explained, noting the chamber paired down its database, which used to have about 1,200 vendors. The decrease isn’t because of a lack of interest — it contained a lot of people who have moved on to other places, or no longer attend markets. The idea was to update the database, to include as much current and up-todate information as possible. Now, vendors are required to register to participate in the market, meaning they have to have their 2015 vendor agreement on file and have been assigned a registration number. Each Saturday, the market can accommodate about 250

There (truly) is something for everybody. I think that’s one of the reasons why it’s so popular. … Everyone can come, and everyone will find something that they like to look at.” The market currently is only accepting additional vendors in four categories: farm products, certain food products, and certain arts and crafts. There are a number of special events planned throughout this year’s market season, including the annual “Kids Day,” which is set for June 20. On that date, Huron Medical Center will be at the market to conduct safety bike helmet fittings. There will be a balloon release at the market, culminating the June 13 Autism Walk (which begins at Gallup Park, and trails down West Street through the market). Pigeon Farmers Market is open Fridays for business By Bill Diller For the Tribune

PIGEON — The Pigeon Farmers Market has become a popular stop for people looking for fresh produce and baked goods. A core group of eight regulars usually show up every Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to sell their wares. They are frequently joined by additional vendors who may have other commitments and aren’t available every week.

The market isn’t limited to food items — crafters are invited to set up a table, as well. “Anybody is welcome in the market, and it is free,” said Mary Dubs of the Pigeon Chamber of Commerce. “As long as it’s new, and not a garage sale thing.” This is the eighth year for the Pigeon Farmers Market, which is sponsored by the Pigeon Chamber of Commerce. It is located at the back

end of the municipal parking lot in downtown Pigeon. “It’s right next to the Pigeon Historical Museum,” Dubs said. “It begins on Friday, May 1, and runs into October.” There is no set date for the market to close in the fall. “It goes until our regulars decide it’s too cold,” Dubs said. At the market, fresh produce and baked goods are the main attraction, but crafters and quilters are on hand on

a semi-regular basis. People can shop at their leisure — quite a few employees of local businesses take advantage of the Pigeon Farmers Market during their lunch breaks. It’s something they look forward to on any given Friday during the summer. There’s nothing like a fresh-baked cookie or cupcake to break up a long day of work. While they’re enjoying their treat, people frequently pick up a loaf of bread, farm-fresh vegetables, a handmade craft item, or additional cookies to take home with them. The family-friendly market encourages people to stop by during the day, with their kids in tow, to shop for items they can use throughout the upcoming week. Because the Pigeon Farmers Market is becoming more popular each year, vendors from all over Huron County head to Pigeon on Fridays to sell their products. “If it’s a nice day, they can set up outside,” Dubs said. All vendors are required to remain at the market until 6 p.m., unless they have sold out of merchandise or severe weather threatens. If vendors are set up before 2 p.m. and customers are on the premises, they may sell before the scheduled starting time. Although the market is

spearheaded by Harbor Beach Council Member Robert Swartz, he does not act in that official capacity. He works in conjunction with the Harbor Beach Chamber of Commerce and the City of Harbor Beach. Because it is located on city property, there are ordinances regarding the market, yet the city is not actively involved with its operation. According to Swartz, over 100 different vendors sold at the market last year. The minimum number on any given Thursday was 15, with a maximum of 47 vendors. The property has room for over 80 vendors. Swartz feels the Harbor Beach Farmers Market has some specific rules set in place to help enhance the operation. See “market” • 13

NATURE: Lady’s Slipper Festival provides cool opportunity to enjoy the outdoors Saturday, Sunday From 12

There have been upgrades to the parking lot, as well as numerous changes within the nature center building. An outdoor amphitheater is under construction, and will hopefully be finished by mid-summer. The amphitheater will be used for the nature center’s summer programs, which have grown in popularity over the last few years. This year’s Lady’s Slipper Festival boasts nearly a dozen vendors selling everything from baked goods, and peanut brittle, to fine art paintings, nature photogra-

phy, and numerous crafts, including wearable art, jewelry, pottery, wooden crafts, and much more. Nature center board members will be on hand selling brats and hot dogs, and will be happy to answer questions about the nature center, which consists of land set aside to allow everyone to enjoy the bounties of nature. The Lady’s Slipper Festival attracts nature-lovers and others who enjoy walking the groomed trails. The trail system is one of the nature center’s greatest attractions, and includes a section that is

paved, so those who are handicapped have access, as well. The trail system is open from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year. Visitors to the festival will be able to listen to music throughout the festival, including Home Alone, who will play from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed by The Spring Street Boys from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. On Sunday, The Eastern Michigan Music Makers will entertain from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The nature center gift shop will be open during the Lady’s Slipper Festival, and nature center board members will

be on hand to assist youngsters as they build their own birdhouse to take with them. In lieu of a charge for the birdhouse, the board is asking for the donation of a food item for the county food bank. There are a limited number of bird house kits, available on a first-come, first-build basis. Be sure to get there early, as the bird houses will likely go quickly. The Lady’s Slipper Festival

is a family-oriented event that is sure to provide a fun-filled day of food, music and natural beauty. Folks are invited to spend the day communing with nature, and enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of the festival. For further information on the Huron County Nature Center or the Lady’s Slipper Festival, visit www.huronnaturecenter.org or call 989-5518400.

One such rule states items must have been grown, produced, or prepared by the individual selling at the market. These items include fruits, vegetables, nuts, berries, maple syrup or honey. In addition, baked goods must be baked by the seller. Inedible items like plants and cut flowers must be grown and prepared by the vendor. Other rules require vendors to clean up after the day is over. In addition, they are responsible to keep their individual areas neat and clean throughout the day. Smoking is not allowed in the booths or on the grounds. There will be a designated smoking area. For the first time in its three-year history, the farmers market will collect a daily fee of $5 from vendors. They may choose to pay $60 for the entire season. An advantage of paying for the season allows the vendor to maintain the same selling area for the year. All fees collected will be used to support and promote the market. One of these promotions will be a special event called Christmas in July. It will be

Housecleaning, windows, one-time or contract cleaning and local errand running

held on July 23. Santa will be at the market for the entire day. Prize drawings will take place at 4 p.m. and at 6 p.m. on that day. Customers must be present to win. Tickets for the drawings will be given to customers when they make purchases. The more purchases one makes, the more tickets they will have for the drawings. Prizes include tricycles, bicycles and Harbor Beach Bucks. The

bucks can be used at various Harbor Beach businesses in lieu of cash. Swartz said vendors are not just from the Upper Thumb. Since the inception of the market, vendors have come from Houghton Lake, Rochester Hills, Lansing, Port Huron and other areas. This year’s market looks promising. Many of last year’s vendors have contacted Swartz, and new vendors have made inquiries.

Nature Center features special Saturday programming By Bill Diller For the Tribune

HURON COUNTY — For more than a decade, the Huron County Nature Center has offered a series of educational programs throughout the summer months. This year is certainly no exception. On Saturdays, beginning in June and ending in early September, the nature center will be the place to be to learn about flora and fauna of

all shapes and sizes. The programs are designed to educate and entertain. Located at 3336 Loosemore Road, a quarter mile south of M-25, and a quarter mile east of Oak Beach Road, midway between Port Austin and Caseville, the Huron County Nature Center Wilderness Arboretum kicks off its season on Memorial Weekend with the Lady’s Slipper Festival.

One of the most popular programs offered by the Huron County Nature Center during the summer is Birds of Prey, with Joe Rogers. Rogers is a wildlife recovery expert, and brings birds, such as hawks, owls and eagles to the programs. This shot shows a great-horned owl.

CENTER: Schedule packed with fun From 14

There will be entertainment throughout the festival, as well as arts and crafts, and food vendors. In recent years, birdhouse building has become a popular attraction at the festival. Volunteers assist children in building their own birdhouse, which they can then take home. All that’s asked is that the child bring a food item for a local food pantry. There are a limited number of kits available, so come early. Following the festival are a series of summer educational programs. This year, the first program is on June 13. There will be programs each weekend after that through Labor Day Weekend. During June, the nature center will host a program on Native American Artifacts, presented by Kevin Roggenbuck, import a petting zoo where children will be introduced to farm animals, and offered a nest building and bird identification program led by naturalist Janea Little. July educational programs begin with what has proven to be one of the most popular programs at the nature center — Joe Rogers returns with his Birds of Prey, which features hawks, owls, eagles and more. The following weekends feature a program by Ted Falkenberg, entitled “What’s

Going On in the Honey Bee Hive,” and an interesting program called Michigan Snakes Alive, presented by Jim and Carol McGrath. On the last weekend in July, naturalist Janea Little returns to lead a walk through the nature center to identify flowers and trees. The first weekend in August brings another new program. Nature center board member, Tom Beachy, will present information on the sounds, habitat and identification of birds that call the nature center home. The following weekend, Jim and Carol McGrath return to present a program on Michigan reptiles and amphibians. On Aug. 15, representatives of the Department of Natural Resources from Port Crescent State Park will be on hand to talk about Invasive Species, and how to control them. Naturalist Janea Little returns on Aug. 22 to lead “The Great Bug Hunt,” a program designed to help people find and identify insects indigenous to the nature center. The final program for August is called Mushroom Identification. Dr. Ralph Czerepinski will teach visitors how to identify mushrooms in the nature center, which is home to

many varieties of fungi. The emphasis will be on identifying mushrooms that are safe to eat. On Labor Day Weekend, the Organization for Bat Conservation will present the last program of the season. It is entitled “Bats of the World.” There will be live bats on hand. Visitors will learn their habits, and how beneficial bats are to the environment. All programs except the Lady’s Slipper Festival begin at 10:30 am. They are designed to be of interest to all ages, as well as informative. There is no charge for these programs. However, the nature center relies on donations in order to meet their daily operating expenses, which include maintaining the gift shop, the parking lot, the visitor center and the trail system, and to continue

to provide summer educational programs. The nature center board has striven to provide the very best in educational programs to the public. Improvements continue to the property, including upgrades to the parking lot and inside of their building. T h e y a re a l s o c o nstructing a new outdoor A=amphitheater. It is their hope the amphitheater will be completed soon, so many

of the programs can be enjoyed in an outdoor environment. Whether its a person’s residence or summer cottage, she said, it’s important that every client feels that their home reflects their family. “That is why I take the time with each client to be sure they are satisfied with their decision and the final installation,” she added. Now that warmer weather is on the way, Zmick wants everyone to enjoy the view out their windows. “It’s great to see green grass, flowers and our Great Lakes. It’s also heartwarming to see beautiful window dressings are part of that view,” she stated. “Today, there are so many low maintenance options for cottages. BOCCE: Tournament is June 16-17

Historical society hosts ice cream social Sunday By Bill Diller For the Tribune

CASEVILLE — The Historical Society of Caseville will be hosting its annual Ice Cream Social from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the former Maccabees Hall, 6733 Prospect St., in Caseville, one block off M-25, the site of the Historical Society of Caseville Museum. Normal hours of operation for the museum are from noon to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The museum, which is open year round, is staffed by volunteers from the historical society. The public is invited to attend Sunday’s Ice Cream Social. Tickets are available at the door. It is a popular kickoff to the summer season. Last year, the social served 168 sundaes. “It’s really a community event that we sponsor,” said Audrey Jesmore, co-chair of the event. “Families look forward to it on Memorial Weekend. It just seems to be a

wonderful thing for people to come and have an ice cream sundae. They sit and enjoy one another’s company. It’s a great time to catch up.” The cost is $4 for adults and $2 for children. “It’s inexpensive, and the servings are very generous,” Jesmore said. “There’ll be strawberry ice cream sundaes with chocolate sauce, whipped cream and nuts. Toppings are donated by Pam and Al Mason — they’ve done that for years. Dairy Queen will donate the bowls, napkins and spoons. The community is very good about helping us out. We also have a lot of participation from our members. That’s one of the nice things about this group, we have a lot of volunteers.” There will also be 50/50 raffles during the event. While enjoying a sundae, people are encouraged to look around the museum at the historical memorabilia of Caseville’s past. The museum is home to hundreds of dis-

From 22

play items depicting life in the Caseville area in the olden days. There are photographs, implements, equipment and documents from Caseville’s past that are sure to pique the interest of nearly everyone. Each year, the museum features a blast from Caseville’s past as a special display. This year, typical beach scenes from bygone days are highlighted. The Historical Society of Caseville Museum is used for meetings and special events throughout the year. It will be a stopover for bicyclists during the June 20 Tour di Lago, and will become the Cheeseburger Museum from Aug. 14-23, during Cheeseburger in Caseville. “I’d like to encourage families to come, and to bring their children,” Jesmore said. “This is a family event, and our museum is a great place for families to come and see the history of Caseville.” For more information, visit www.thehchs.org/Caseville, or call 989-856-9090.

Bring your fan club — spectators have just as much fun supporting their favorite team(s). The tournament begins promptly at 6 p.m. each evening. Check in by 5:45 p.m. Concessions — including burgers, bratwurst, soft drinks, beer and wine — will be available. This tournament is a chamber function for the community. All proceeds are used to support chamber

activities and future events. Whether participating or just watching all the action, don’t forget to mark you calendar for this exciting tournament — it’s a great time for all ages. Man’s best friend is a highlight of the Michigan Sugar Festival By Casey Johnson Tribune Staff Writer

SEBEWAING — The 50th anniversary of the Michigan Sugar Festival was host to royalty, including the festival’s firstever queen, brand new attractions and a roaring main event — live tiger performances. This year, coordinators were in a quandary as to how they could match the celebration that drew around 10,000 people. The solution: Another round of live shows featuring furry, four-legged performers. But this time the entertainers won’t be cats. Ultimate Air Dogs will be appearing Friday, June 19, through Sunday, June 21, and will feature several challenges not only for the experienced dogs, but for local pets as well. “Dogs have to be familiar with jumping off a dock,” said festival chairman Melvin Kuhl. “It should be fun.” And with three main challenges, the dogs will have a variety of abilities they can showcase. The events are Splash, Catch-It and Fetchit. With Splash, dog handler teams get two jumps where the dog runs from a “dock-type” structure into a pool to make a

splash. Catch-It is a lot like the first event, but involves exactly what it says, the dog must catch an object thrown to them before “splashing.” In Fetch-It, the canine must knock a bumper out of its hold in the water. Festivalgoers with small dogs need not fear, the competition is open to all sizes and breeds (mix or purebred) — just as long as they can swim. And with this year’s theme being “All Tracks Lead to Sebewaing,” the attraction is fitting. And so is the 51st Parade Grand Marshal. Kuhl said they chose Tom Lounsbury of Cass City due to his extensive outdoor career. “He just seemed a natural pick,” Kuhl said. Lounsbury is an outdoor writer/photographer who has written a weekly newspaper column (in the Huron Daily Tribune) for years, as well as produced a weekly outdoor radio show on the local station, WLEW. While the annual grand parade is a main event, Kuhl said the festival is growing as are the attractions it offers. Due to some scheduling conflicts, Kuhl said the celebration has been stretched over two weekends, with both

weekends host to large events. On Saturday, June 13, the annual fishing tournament will be conducted as well as Kids Paint the Town. But for the first time a Gun, Bow, Rod & Sporting Goods Show will be in the entertainment tent, and it’s something Kuhl said they hope to continue in the future. Vendors can reserve space to sell or show, and attendees will be able to browse, buy and trade. The entertainment tent will be home to a variety of events leading up to festival’s official opening on Friday, June 19. There also will be a wine tasting by Dizzy Daisy Winery and Sebewaing Beer on Tap, a Youth Talent Show and Are you Smarter than a Grade Schooler. Other new events include: a Pellet Gun Shooting Trailer — sponsored by the NWTF Sebewaing Gobblers — on Friday, June 19; and a Sugar Rush 3K Color Fun Run on Saturday. Some popular attractions from last year also will be returning. The Xbox Game Trailer was a big hit, Kuhl said, and will be an all-day attraction from noon to 11 p.m. on Friday and Bay Shore Camp will sponsor inflatables for the weekend. See “SUGAR” • 26

SUGAR: Festival runs from June 11-21 in Sebewaing From 25

On Saturday, comical magic personality Cameron Zvara will take the main stage for a return performance. And, following tradition, there will, of course, be fireworks, petting zoos, midway

rides (with wristband availability) and queens. Kuhl said the festival is a great way to not only come out and have a good time, but to support Sebewaing and all its local agencies, such as the Lions’ Club, fire department and other service organizations. Kuhl said the festival is not only a way to honor the sugar beet industry, but to recognize Sebewaing.

June 26-28 Country Ribstock festival filled with music, fun By Seth Stapleton Tribune Staff Writer

CASEVILLE — The seventh annual Caseville Country Ribstock is scheduled to take place June 26-28 — and it is part of six straight weekends of big events taking place in the city. The event is anchored by a country music vibe played by up-and-coming bands and finger-licking good ribs prepared and served by some of the area’s top restaurants. “I’m really excited about Ribstock this year,” said Steve Louwers, president of the Caseville Area Chamber of Commerce. “It’s going to be a great start to our summer season.” Ribstock has slowly become one of the chamber’s top events of the summer, but organizers are still figuring out ways to make it that much better for festivalgoers. Louwers said Ribstock organizers listened to

the people, and will be opening the famous ribs tent on Friday night. In the past, it has only been open on Saturday. “A lot of people were looking for ribs at the tents on Friday night,” Louwers said. So far, seven restaurants have committed to the tent on Friday to grill up versions of both baby back and St. Louis style ribs, along with many other tasty treats such as pulled pork, hot dogs, onion rings, french fries, donuts and other deserts. The tent runs from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Caseville County Park. Along with great food, attendees will be treated to great music, with two headliners performing back-to-back Friday night. Beginning at 7 p.m., David Shelby will get things started at the amphitheater, followed by Brian Lorrente and the Usual Suspects. See “ribstock” • 29

Artists showcase their talent during Thumb area studio tour By Bill Diller For the Tribune

HURON COUNTY — The Thumb Artists Studio Tour is set from noon to 5 p.m. June 20-21. “This is the ninth year for the tour,” said Laurie Conger, accomplished painter and pottery artist, who is the event coordinator. “Every year, the artists change, making the event seem new.” While the tour has a core of artists, such as wood turner, Dave Thuemmel; jeweler, Lynne Wiencek; potter, Deb Maxwell; and Conger, this year’s version of the tour will be bigger than ever. That’s not simply hyperbole, there is a restored church on the tour, as well as a barn project. Michael Zaites is the owner of a restored church, The White Church Gallery, which is the first stop on the tour. Located in the Grindstone City area, Zaites has redone the inside of the church. “He’s tried to be true to the historical aspect of the church, but he’s got a lot of modern paintings of his own,” Conger said. “They are huge canvases. He will also have artist friends exhibiting at his gallery.” The next stop is Dave Thuemmel, a retired dairy farmer who is recognized as the Thumb’s premier wood turner. “Dave’s always trying new techniques,” Conger said. “He does demos nonstop, both days.” Another new stop is next on

the list. Bird Creek Farms is hosting three artists, Scott Hocking, Coulter Mitchell and David Tyndall. Hocking’s project will be a work-in-progress. He plans to deconstruct an area barn and reconstruct it — upside down — as an ark. He will be working on the project during the studio tour. Tyndall is an accomplished painter, and Mitchell is a videographer. They will bring new types of art work to the tour. Mermaid’s Cove is the next stop. This quaint little art shop, located in downtown Port Austin, features the work of five artist partners, along with a number of area consignment artists. “Sandy Kinney will be doing glass bead work at the Cove,” Conger said. “She’ll be outside making beads and Donna McCatty, who makes ceramic tiles, will be in the store highlighting her work.” Another stop new to the tour is next. Port Austin Kayak will be hosting two artists. “Terry Boyle will be there,” Conger said. “He’s a painter. With him will be a photographer, Steven Grewe. He’s active in the Midland art world.” Just down the road is the Port Austin Historical Museum. They will host a fiber arts group, which includes Claire Bomer-Logan, Sharron Rutz, and Pat Duever. “There will be spinners and weavers there,” Conger said. “They will have fiber arts, both

practical and modern. They make everything from scarves and hats to sculptural pieces.” Deb Maxwell is the next stop on the 2015 Thumb Artists Studio Tour. She has been a guest artist in previous years, but this year will be displaying and demoing at her new cottage on M-25. She will have as guest artist, jeweler Brenda Hynes, who also does lamp-work beading. Around the corner from Maxwell, right on Lake Huron, will be Lynne Wiencek, an accomplished jewelry artist, who is a mainstay on the studio tour. “Lynne has some new pieces this year,” Conger said. “She calls them collections, pieces that look like they all go together.” Conger herself is the next stop on the tour. “I’ll be on the wheel,” she said. “Anybody who wants to sit down and give it a try, I’ll say, ‘have at it.’” The last stop on the 2015 edition of the studio tour will be The Lodge at Oak Pointe, a Bed & Breakfast located three miles east of Caseville, on M-25. “They’ll be hosting Marilyn Beifer, a painter, and Mimi Nicol, who does glass and repurposed goods,” Conger said. “Mimi has some new glass work, and Marilyn has some interesting painting techniques.” Even though the studio tour differs from a traditional art show, the quality is comparable. Harbor Beach Truck Show is expected to roll into town June 20 By Rich Harp For the Tribune

HARBOR BEACH — The third annual Harbor Beach Truck Show will take place June 20 in downtown sections of M-142 and M-25 that will be blocked off for the event. The show is sponsored by Harbor Beach, with Ron Wruble representing the city. Neal Hentschl and Tom Donnellon are actively involved with promoting the event and encouraging truckers to attend. Promoters have stepped up their efforts to encourage new exhibitors to attend this year, as well as bringing back previous exhibitors. A special wash area will be available. The show is to be held on the cement streets, which will help truckers keep their vehicles clean. Shops and restaurants will be open in the city, including those located downtown. Last year’s show was a success, but it was hindered by running at the same time as another truck show across the state.

“We’re not up against another show like last year,” Hentschl said. “We’re expecting a better turnout.” Hentschl feels there is more interest in the annual event by local truckers. Some will sacrifice a couple days work to attend the show. “To their credit, they’ll spend Friday cleaning up their trucks to show on Saturday,” he said. Hentschl hopes there will be 35 to 40 trucks this year. “It’s a major ordeal to get that many trucks here,” he said. He is encouraged by the fact that there have been inquiries from across Michigan and from at least one other state. One point of interest to spectators, particularly those who have little contact with big rigs, is the personal nature of the show. People can walk up to the vehicles, ask questions of the owners, and even climb into truck cabs. Hentschl told of one woman who was amazed by the size of the trucks, their weight and

the stopping distance needed to keep them from getting into accidents. “After being invited to look inside the cab of one large truck, she said, ‘it looks like an airplane’s cockpit,’” Hentschl said. This year, the city plans the day-long event to be more than just a showing of vehicles. “The city has really stepped up,” said Hentschl. There will be entertainment and a centrally located barbecue. Country band Shotguns & Violins will perform in an outdoor setting, as will rock band Wicked Frenzy. Other highlights promoted for the day include swimming at the beach and beach-related activities. The beach and park are within walking distance of the show. Lighthouse and museum tours are available that day. Truckers and spectators are invited to take advantage of two local parks that are offering special camping rates. These are North Park Campground (989-479-9554) and Wagener County Park (www. huroncountyparks.com). Huron County Relay for Life is set for June 27-28 in Bad Axe By Chris Aldridge Tribune Staff Writer

BAD AXE — Huron County’s Relay For Life will again bring the fight to cancer in Bad Axe City Park in a 24-hour event on Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28. This year, lead event organizer Davina Maurer says the

Relay hopes to raise $75,000 to help fund cancer research, and register 150 cancer survivors. “So we can find the cures for what can be treated,” Maurer said. The American Cancer Society’s 2015 estimates show 251 new cancer cases reported in Huron County, with 101 mortalities.

Cancer claims 185 deaths per 100,000, above the state rate of 178, according to a report prepared by the Huron County Health Department and delivered to county officials last December. Diabetes is blamed for almost 26 deaths, up from the state rate of about 24, according to the report. Maurer thinks of the annu-

side candlelit bags — the names on which serve to memorialize those lost and support others with cancer. Maurer calls it a bonding experience. “Once you see all the bags lit up at night around the track, you really see how many are affected,” Maurer said. See “relay” • 30

Also taking place on Friday is the third annual Amateur Rib Cook-Off, with cash prizes going to first through third place winners. Winners will be announced at 8:45 p.m. that night at the amphitheater. On Saturday, the Annual Rib Cook-Off will take place rain or shine at the county park. The event runs from noon to 8 p.m., with judging concluding at 6 p.m. Music begins at 5 p.m. and runs to 11 p.m., with Rye Whiskey taking the stage, followed by Dani Vantany and Ten Hands Tall. Allen Turner and the Steel Horse Band will end the night. Many other family-friendly activities also will run throughout the day, including a sand castle building contest, ice cream eating contest, duck pond, three little pigs races and moonlight shopping.

al event as a great emotional support system for those diagnosed and surviving, and a way to honor those that have died from cancer. This year’s theme is “Knock Cancer Out of the Park.” The event is most notably symbolized by its luminaria ceremony, when participants take a walk around the park at night along-

An official Ribstock horseshoe tournament also is in the works. In past years, Louwers said the event averaged around 1,000 to 1,200 passes sold for the weekend. This year, the price is the same at $5 for a weekend of entertainment. Louwers said last year a total of around 20,000 ribs were sold. “Being that we’re going to do it on Friday, I’d like to see what we can do,” he said. “Maybe we can surpass the 25,000 mark — that would be my goal.” Rounding things out on Sunday will be a chamber fundraiser from noon to 3 p.m. The fundraiser includes ribs and other food under the tent, while entertainment is provided by Music Doctors. Relay: Fight against cancer From 29

“When you’re looking at just over 1,000 bags, and you’re walking around at night in silence with a little bit of music in the background, yes, it’s very humbling.” This year, the names also will scroll on a projector screen through midnight. Maurer says it’s also important that those attending learn of cancer. “The goal is to educate too — that’s important,” she said. They hope to teach prevention and awareness. During a “fight back/survivor ceremony,” participants are asked to share examples of preventative measures, like not using a tanning booth or identifying kinds of cancer screenings, Maurer said. Though the atmosphere may seem solemn, Maurer says the Relay is a familyoriented event — and there is plenty of entertainment already planned with other

possibilities in the works. A 5K Ribbon Run will feature 24 themed laps every hour. Some include a superhero theme, at 3 p.m.; silly sunglasses and hats, 5 p.m.; Michigan vs. Michigan State, 10 p.m.; pajama and stuffed animal, 1 a.m.; and fairy tale, 8 a.m. Sunday. “We change it up so it’s more lively, and it’s fun to see people dress up,” Maurer said. Also, Huron Behavioral Health is planning a butterfly release, Maurer said. New for this year are caricature drawings from noon to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. As for entertainment, Monroe-based country music band Rye Whiskey, which organizers say has been invited back by popular demand, is scheduled to perform at 10 p.m. Saturday. Brad Goodwin — a selfdescribed one-man band from Marlette “providing an eclectic mix of folk songs, ballads, love

songs, light blues and light rock,” according to his Facebook page — is scheduled to perform from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Fiend Fyre Charmers, a “fire art group,” takes the stage before that, at about 7:30 p.m. The group has previously performed at the Mid Michigan Renaissance Festival. The Relay has been held in Huron County for at least a decade. In 2008, the event helped raise $101,000. There were 25 teams that helped in the effort. But donations have lessened over the years. Last year, the total was about $86,000, with 123 survivors registered and 17 teams. By mid-May, Maurer said organizers had gained close to $32,000 from 12 teams. “There were 25 teams in 2011; this year we’re sitting at 12,” Maurer said. Money is raised through local businesses or individuals sponsoring the event, team fundraising before and during the Relay, online donations, silent auctions, a raffle, the 5K Ribbon Run and the cake auction. Those who would like to purchase luminary bags, make donation, volunteer, become a committee member or have questions, may contact Davina Maurer at 989-551-8369 or davina. maurer@att.net. Tales from the fresh water seas By Capt. Fred Davis For the Tribune

For many years, I have written a series of articles in the Resorter regarding perilous events that occurred on Lake Huron. Many of them told of great losses and dangerous conditions faced by the vessels and people involved. Occasionally, an event happened that was humorous and amused our crew. One such event took place near the Port Austin lighthouse. A tugboat that had been converted to a pleasure craft passed my fishing charter boat, Miss Port Austin, on a heading toward the reef that supports the lighthouse. I kept a close eye on the vessel and when I was certain he was going to go aground on the reef, I began calling the operator on the VHF. I also made several emergency signal blasts. I concluded there was no way I could stop the boat if it continued on its present course. My customers, 20 eager anglers, were enjoying a good day of fishing. I turned my attention back to assisting them, realizing I could not help the endangered craft. I continued to glance in the direction of the tug as it appeared to have gone behind the lighthouse and perhaps would pass the reef safely. The fish were biting well, customers were bringing in two at a time, which kept me and my crewman very busy, so I was unable to observe the tug boat any further. When the charter time expired, we raised anchor preparing to get underway back to the harbor. Suddenly, the pas-

sengers began to excitedly call my attention to black smoke bellowing from behind the lighthouse. The sight gave the appearance the lighthouse was actually on fire. The smoke was from the tug, which had indeed firmly grounded on the reef. The captain was attempting to power off by running his engines and the more he did so, the harder he was aground. As I passed outside the grounded vessel, the captain finally responded on the VHF and asked me if I knew how he could get off the reef, indicating an urgency. He told me his boat had a seven-foot draft with a steelbeam keel. I told the captain the only boat in the immediate area big enough to remove him was mine, and advised I would have to take my passengers to the dock. I explained that I was the owner, operator of the local towing company and assured him I would return and remove him from the reef. I suggested he cease his efforts to power off until I returned. Another of my crewmembers on shore was dispatched to head out with a smaller vessel to keep an eye on the tug and standby to pass a towline to it. As soon as my passengers, all very happy, were off my boat, I got underway to see if I could help the grounded boat. It was half-again the length of my vessel and could present a problem not easily resolved. The captain aboard the vessel I sent out to survey conditions reported and we set a plan. See “Tales” • 31

TALES: A humorous account of one pleasure craft’s rescue From 30

He took a line over to the tug and told him to stand by. I told the tugboat captain once we got underway to follow in a straight line behind me until I removed the towline. Specifically, he was told exactly what to do once his boat was floating free. I explained what would occur if he differed from my

directives — he would ground again. If I had to stress my vessel to remove him again, I would charge a second fee. With an extreme strain on the hawser, we were able to swing side-to-side and gently remove the tug. As soon as the boat was free, the tug captain threw off the towline

and headed for the port. As I picked my way off the reef, I watched the tug once again go aground. Because he did not follow my boat, as I advised, and took another course, he placed his vessel in shallower water than before. Finally the captain responded to my directives and the second

had to find a spot to drain his kidneys. The owner of the boat told us his big dog was the reason for all the trouble caused. It seems the dog had to go but would not do it on the boat in spite of the nice, potted tree placed on the stern for his use. He just wanted all four paws on solid ground and real grass. My crewman that got knocked down really understood because the dog’s eyes looked crossed.
