Elkton AutumnFest is the place to be Labor Day weekend By Casey Johnson For the Tribune
ELKTON — The small town of Elkton is gearing up for a big celebration at this year’s AutumnFest, and festivalgoers have a plethora of events to look forward to. From petting zoos to tractor pulls and dog walks, AutumnFest offers something for a variety of interests. Set to kick off on Friday, AutumnFest will officially begin at 4 p.m. when the historical society opens the log cabins at Ackerman Park. And the first community event will feature man’s best four-legged friend. At 5 p.m., the Ron Forster Memorial Dog Walkers will parade down Main Street. Anyone is welcome to bring a puppy pal and join. The evening will continue with the sounds of Bill Denbrock’s Big Band at 6 p.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park, where the 2015 Beautiful Babies and this year’s AutumnFest Queen also will be announced. Saturday is set to be even more eventful with a 5K walk/ run — sponsored by North Star Bank — at 8 a.m., with the Grand Parade to roll through town at 11
a.m. And the town couldn’t ask for more deserving grand marshals to lead the parade. “It’s sad to have any young life cut short,” said Angela Peyerk, one of the festivals coordinators and a member of the Elkton Chamber of Commerce. “But we are excited to be able to honor Ashley Leipprandt’s life as her parents, Tim and Deb Leipprandt, and her faithful dog, Harley, serve as this year’s Grand Marshals for the parade.” Ashley Leipprandt, an Elkton resident, passed away after a long battle with cancer earlier this summer. Following the parade, Ackerman Park will be filled with the smell of a chicken barbecue, hosted by the Oliver Township Fire Department, and alive with the sounds of Maplewood Farms petting zoo, carnival games and a candy drop all by the log cabins. A community kickball tournament is set for 2 p.m. with members of the ice, fire and ambulance crews joining. And for those interested in learning more about the farm life, a bus tour will head to Red Mountain

Jersey Dairy Farm at 3 p.m. for a tour. And those looking for a “daring” event can catch the MPX Racing Moto Circus at 7 p.m. with racing under the lights. Motocross won’t be the only motorized sport at this event. The Thumb Tractor Pull Association will host its final competition for the season at 3 p.m. on Sunday, and a kiddie tractor pull also is scheduled. As for why people should head out to “the little town with a big smile,” chamber member Kurt Damrow said folks should come to experience some of the new and unique things happening in Elkton. “(People should come) to see Elkton and all the new things that are going on,” he said. Ice cream aficionados can partake of the many specials going on at Kim’s Creamery over the weekend, and there will be plenty more food to try as well. The chamber of commerce will provide vendor services for the motocross event, and the Huron County Youth Center will have vending available over the weekend. Sunday will be host to a pancake breakfast and worship service, a mud volleyball tournament with a brand new venue (in the soccer fields at Ackerman Park), sponsored by the Hitching Post and
more. Lined up along main street, the Jack Tyler Memorial Car Show will be on display as well — a show that Damrow said is the biggest in Huron County. Flea market and craft show vendors will be set up at 10 a.m. at the tennis courts in the park for anyone looking to do a little perusing. And the festival may be over Monday, but not right away. The Elkton Lion’s Club Golf Scramble will wrap up the holiday weekend. All weekend people will have the opportunity to “take a trip down memory lane” by visiting the grand opening of the

Damrow said the chamber owns much of the property located near the Elkton Cemetery on Eby Road, which is where he said a lot of former Elkton kids used to fish. A path to the river has been cleared, he said, and anyone is welcome to visit — or revisit — the river and even do a little fishing. AutumnFest to feature firstever Saturday night Motocross By Casey Johnson For the Tribune
ELKTON — A brand new attraction will be featured at this year’s Elkton AutumnFest, and it’s guaranteed to be a little fast and furious. MPX Racing of Sebewaing will host its first-ever Saturday night event on the course on Sept. 5, and organizers are inviting an array of athletes. “The track is designed for beginners (and) created to be fun for the top level of experts,” said Craig MacPhee, owner of MPX Racing. “There’s nothing too dangerous for a beginner to try.” MacPhee and his team built the track last summer and have since drawn spectators to many Friday night races. But the event is a first for Autumnfest and for a Saturday night — both factors that may inspire a larger crowd. As for riders, if the thrills of speed and adventure aren’t enough, perhaps the prizes will be. MacPhee said they’ve created the Mini Moto Challenge, where racers will have a chance to win up to $1,000 worth of prizes including gift certificates and more. The rules: competitors must

be between the ages of 8 and 15, riding 65cc to 85cc bikes. There will be just one race, with prizes all the way down to 15th place. MacPhee said the challenge is in addition to the regular race schedule, which will include 30 different classes open for every age and skill level, and feature dirt bikes, quads and lawn mowers. He stressed that racing is, quite literally, open to almost everyone. “(Riders can be) anywhere from pro to 4-year-old beginners,” he said. And though accidents are possible, parents need not worry. “(Last year) was a very safe season with no serious injury,” MacPhee said, adding that he anticipates this year’s events will be the same. As for the course, he said any changes have been minor and only served to make the track safer. The real change is in admission. MacPhee said they’ve dropped prices to $10 for ages 18 and up, $5 for ages 11 to 17, and visitors under 10 enter for free — just one of the reasons MacPhee said people should

Each donating business, MacPhee said, will be recognized and are appreciated. The gates are set to open at 2 p.m. with open practice from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Racing begins at 7 p.m. and continues until around 11 p.m. with varying classes. Local nature center’s trail system is open year-round Annual Fall Dinner set for Sept. 19 and Pasta House Fundraiser is being planned for Oct. 14 HURON COUNTY — The Huron County Nature Center, located at 3336 Loosemore Road, near Oak Beach, is a busy place during the summer months. It starts on Memorial Weekend with the Lady’s Slipper Festival and continues through Labor Day, with educational programs scheduled on most Saturdays during the summer. Although summer is the busy season, the nature center doesn’t simply close down after
Labor Day. There are still events going on during the fall. One of the most popular attractions at the nature center, the trail system, is open year round. Visitors can walk the twoand-a-half mile circuit at their leisure, between dawn and dusk, any day they feel like it. The fall season is particularly beautiful because the colors along the trail system are striking. Along with the trail system being open, there are a couple of organized events scheduled for the fall. The Annual Fall Dinner, sponsored by the nature cen-

Thumb Arts Guild to host Sept. 4 Preview Party Submitted to the Tribune
PORT AUSTIN — The Thumb Arts Guild was formed in June 2001 when artists from the Upper Thumb got together and created a non-profit organization. Its mission is; ‘The enrichment of life through active promotion and encouragement of art making and the appreciation of all phases of the arts. As guild members who believe the arts to be essential to a complete life, we will work to incorporate the arts into the public experience and develop artistic self-realization through opportunities for growth.’ Since its formation, the Thumb Arts Guild has become a staunch advocate for the arts in Huron County. The group has grown from its original 24 members to nearly 80. Locally known as TAG, the group sponsors a Members Exhibit on Memorial Day Weekend, and their biggest event, Art in the Park, on Labor Day Weekend. Like most non-profit groups, TAG relies on financial support from the community in the form of grants, donations and fundraisers. One of its fundraisers is ongoing each year members of the group pick a theme and create pieces of art based on
that theme. This year’s theme is lighthouses. Throughout the summer, the member’s creations are moved from venue to venue within the county, accompanied by bid sheets. People are encouraged to bid on these creations, with winners announced at 3 p.m. Sept. 5 at Art in the Park. The themed pieces are on display at TAG’s other fundraiser, the Preview Party, which is held on the Friday preceding Art in the Park. In addition to these creations, the Preview Party features works donated by artists who will be participating in Art in the Park. Visitors will be encouraged to bid on these creations at a silent auction. This year’s Preview Party will be held at the Port Austin Civic Center, located at the corner of Spring and Lake streets, in downtown Port Austin. The Preview Party gets underway at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 4, 2015, with winners announced beginning at 7:45 p.m. “Bidding can become somewhat furious towards the end, so it is suggested people get their bids in early for the artwork they’d like to purchase,”
stated TAG Secretary Patty Finan, who also is one of the group’s founders. The Preview Party presents an opportunity for art aficionados to bid on quality pieces of artwork — more than 30 artists have donated their work. Some of the artists will be on hand at the Preview Party, so it will also be a chance to meet the artists. Funds from the Preview Party and the ongoing silent auction will be used for advertising TAG’s ongoing programs, the cost of printing, and security and entertainment for Art in the Park. These proceeds help ensure that TAG can continue to offer artistic events in upcoming years, which fulfills their mission statement to promote the arts in the Thumb.
Right, Lynne Weincek, a Port Austin area jewelry artist, has been selling her work at Art in the Park since its inception. The Thumb Arts Guild is hosting a Preview Party on Sept. 4, the day before this year’s Art in the Park begins. Bill Diller/For the Tribune

Local farmers markets are going strong into the fall By Seth Stapleton Tribune Staff Writer
HURON COUNTY — Summer might be slowly coming to a close and fall will soon be making its way in, but our local farmers market scene is still in full gear. With a nice selection of markets across the county — some that run into October — people will have no excuse not to swing by and pick up some fresh produce, baked good, flowers, art, antiques, crafts and more. The area’s largest farmers market — the Port Austin Farmer’s Market — sees thousands of visitors each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the downtown area. The market will continue to please the masses through Oct. 10. On Labor Day weekend, the market will welcome the Spring Street Boys as live entertainment, while the Veteran’s
Committee will have a display and will be doing a 50/50 raffle for the memorial at Veteran’s Waterfront Park. “We have lots of produce and that kind of stuff right now and that should continue on into the fall when the fall type produce starts coming in,” said Joyce Stanek of the Greater Port Austin Area Chamber of Commerce. “Corn will be going out around the middle of September, and we’ll be getting more melons, pumpkins and squash — other kinds of fall vegetables and fruits.” Stanek said the large crowds typically continue through September as long as the weather is decent, before starting to tail off once October comes. However, she said the market still has plenty of vendors and customers to carry them through the conclusion of the year. See “markets” • 11

have held exhibits in Port Austin, Caseville, Pigeon and Harbor Beach over the years, but the highlight of their efforts is Art in the Park, which has been going on since 2002. In its infancy, the art show was a three-day affair, held on Saturday, Sunday and Labor Day. That changed a few years ago, with Labor Day being dropped in favor of a Preview Party held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. the Friday before Art in the Park at the Port Austin Civic Center. During the Preview Party, visitors will be able to bid on art work donated by various artists that will be at Art in the Park on Saturday and Sunday.
This year, more than 30 artists have donated their creations for this TAG fundraiser. At the art show, more than 40 artists will be set up in Gallup Park in 2015. These include the following artists and the medium they work in: Laura Hogan, jewelry, Ruth Heginbottom, 3D mixed media, Colleen and Jerry Chaplinski, jewelry, Veronica Mainguy, wheel and hand-built pottery, Deb Keene, wood feathers, prints, and watercolors, Barbara Markell, watercolors, acrylics and stones, Diane Geister, soaps, skin care products, and candles, Teresa Petrimoulx, fiber art and cop-

Michigan Bean Festival scheduled for Sept. 4-7 in Fairgrove Karlie N. Goretski is the 66th Michigan Bean Queen, and she says she can’t wait to see what the 67th Michigan Bean Queen has in store for the 2015-16 year.
Submitted to the Tribune
FAIRGROVE — It’s that time of the year again — back to school, harvest time and the 69th Michigan Bean Festival. It is back to the sixties with this year’s festival theme: Beanstock, Peace, Love and Beans. There are a lot of fun events for the whole family during the festival, which is set for Sept. 4-7. There will be free bean soup offered each day of the festival. Friday night starts with a Harvest Potluck where folks can meet the 2015 Michigan Bean Queen candidates. The crowning will take place at 6:30 p.m. that evening. There will be a lot of action in the Motor Sports Park, including go cart racing. Steve Armstrong and the 25 Cent Beer Band is set to perform that evening, Sept. 4. On Saturday, Sept. 5, there will be a Chris Cakes Pancake Breakfast, as well as the “Awesome Car Show,” volleyball tournament and craft show. Then, at noon, kids day begins. Ride bands are $10, and there will also be a lot of free stuff for children, including a petting zoo and candy drop.
http://www.michiganbeanfestival.com/
In the evening, there will be a Unique Motor Sports Demo Derby in Motor Sports Park. Steve Armstrong and the 25 Cent Beer Band will return to provide that evening’s entertainment. Sunday will feature the craft show, and kids are invited to make tie dye shirts. Also that day, the Mud Bog — a festival favorite — is set to take place in Motor Sports Park. Followed by popular demand, the Burn Outs are back. Also, Trigger Happy will be in the entertainment tent and fireworks will take place at dusk. Monday will feature the Grand Parade, a chicken barbecue, tractor show and auction. For more information, visit www.michiganbeanfestival.com. Organizers hope you can come and join the fun.

Huron County Museums opening their doors Sept. 26-27 By Seth Stapleton Tribune Staff Writer
HURON COUNTY — Local historical societies will be opening doors to years past during the annual Huron County museum wide weekend Sept. 26-27. The popular event takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and aims to — in a
fun way — promote each individual museum so more people know where they are at and that they are available to the public. “We wanted to do something to help promote the history of our county, because there’s so many people that don’t know the history of this area,” said Diane Ellicott, president of the Huron County Historical Soci-
ety. During the weekend, the historical society invites people to take a trip back in time and visit one of the many museums available to the public that portrays Huron County’s rich and colorful past. There are a total of 18 historical points of interest across the county, most of which will be taking part in the special weekend, so Ellicott
MARKETS: Pigeon, Port Austin and Harbor Beach From 7
“People like to be out in the fall because it’s nice,” she said. “It’s not real hot and much more comfortable.” Another local favorite is the Harbor Beach Farmers Market, which takes place from 2 to 6 p.m. every Thursday through Oct. 1. According to Harbor Beach City Council Member Robert Swartz, this year’s market has been a great success. This year the market has been averaging around 25 vendors, although that number has been as high as 47. Swartz said officials plan to make the final market of the year a special day. There will be special events incorporated into the market that day,
which includes gift and prize giveaways. Also, an additional Saturday farmers market is planned for September 19, and it will coincide with the town’s annual Chili Cook-Off.
The Pigeon Farmers’ Market takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Friday May-Oct. next to the Pigeon Historical Museum. For more information, call 989-453-7400.

Mistletoe Market set for Nov. 14 By Bradley Massman Tribune Staff Writer
BAD AXE — The holidays are right around the corner, but don’t spend this shopping season standing in line for a half hour. Instead, shop local and visit the Mistletoe Market to fill all your needs. The Mistletoe Market, sponsored by the Huron Daily Tribune, will kick off its eighth year of holiday shopping from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 14 in Bad Axe Middle School, 200 N. Barrie Road. Vicki Yaroch, advertising director for the Tribune, said the idea sparked when she saw a similar market elsewhere. “I think it’s been successful because of the variety and amount of vendors we have turn out each year,” she said. When the market first took flight eight years ago, Yaroch said vendors filled the large gymnasium and a minor portion of the smaller gym. But throughout the years, the vendors continued to grow and grow. “Every year, I get a lot of vendors who want to come back,” Yaroch explained. “I also receive a lot of requests for new vendors to join.” Now, both gymnasiums pack as many vendors in as possible, and those who can’t squeeze into a gym, fill the

One of the biggest celebrations will be in Elkton, where that historical society will be giving tours of its log cabin museum and barn, as well as the new church museum. Activities will also be abundant, with an old fashioned hay ride, horseshoe tournament on Saturday, gentleman’s 1860s baseball game on Sunday, bake sale, petting zoo, quilt show, candle making and old fashioned kids games. “The are taking this and saying, ‘We are here!’” Ellicott said. “Because when we first started

this, nobody knew that Elkton had a log cabin and a barn.” Another highlight, according to Ellicott, will be the Frank Murphy Museum in Harbor Beach opening its doors for tours. “That doesn’t happen very often,” she said. “If you’ve never been there, it’s very interesting to go see. That’s a gem that a lot of people don’t know is even here in Huron County.” Aside from trying to inform the public about the many historical opportunities in the area, Ellicott said the weekend is also geared towards area youth and
the pursuit of trying to get them to appreciate history. That’s the key for the county museum weekend — to get people to know what’s out there,” she said. “What used to happen in all these different areas.” There is no cost for attending any of the events over the course of the weekend, but donations to help maintain each museum will be appreciated. Also, the historical society’s 150th anniversary book along with puzzles will be for sale to help support the society’s efforts.

Mama Ruth Festival to offer good food and fun By Rich Harp For the Tribune
RUTH — As usual, the Mama Ruth Festival will be one of the last big events of the summer. According to Verna Booms and Debbie Bischer, it is well worth the wait. It takes place Sept. 6, a couple days before area children go back to school. As usual, the festival will take place on the grounds of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. Bischer, along with Debbie Messing, is the co-chair of the festival. Booms is secretary of the Holy Apostles Parish, the organization sponsoring the festival. When asked about changes this year, Booms said there were few or no changes. “We’re all about keeping our traditions,” she said. “If it’s not broken, why fix it,” Bischer chimed in. “And the prices will remain the same.”
In particular, the famous Mama Ruth chicken dinner with all the trimmings will stay at $12 for adults, $6 for kids 5-12 years. Children 5 years old and younger get in for free. The parish may sell more chicken dinners than any other organization in the area. Last year, they served 1,528 dinners. The food was all homemade, including pies and other desserts made from scratch. “That’s what draws our crowds,” Bischer said. Chicken dinners will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. That much food is not served without a small army of volunteers. “Almost everyone in the parish is asked to help,” she said. “Well over 200 people helped last year, possibly as many as 250. The workers in the kitchen deserve a lot of praise.” In addition, there will be
other types of food available. Hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, beverages, ice cream and several types of sweet treats will be available at a couple different venues at the event. But the annual festival is so much more than food. Music and dancing will be on tap all day long. The Natural Tones with Rich Lasceski will play from 1 to 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., the Darrell Weltin Band will take over and play until midnight. Music will be under the big tent, and a wooden dance floor will be provided for dancers. As in the past, there is no admission fee. And a refreshment tent will be set up right next door. Adults who prefer other types of entertainment will find Mama Ruth very accommodating. The annual car show is always popular. See “ruth” • 19

Caseville farmer wants you to ‘Get Lost,’ starting in September Submitted to the Tribune
CASEVILLE — Caseville farmer Dan Depner wrote a sarcastic message in his 9-acre corn field this year, telling his visitors and pilots overhead to “Get Lost.” Depner, with the help of a few ambitious friends, hoed out the corn, one stalk at a time, in about seven days. Depner Farms officially opens for the 2015 season on Labor Day weekend. In addition to the corn maze, activities include a soybean mini-maze, “pick-your-own” pumpkin patch, Farmer John’s educational hay ride tours, campfires, pumpkin pie eating contest and various family games like Tic-Tac-Toad, Corn Bowling, Steer Roping and Depner’s “Super Duper Corn Cannon.” Depners will keep their maze open after dark every Saturday for their Family Flashlight Maze, campfire and FREE family-friendly movies on the big barn doors, starting at dusk. Everyone is welcome to bring their blankets or lawn chairs, free of charge. Concessions will also be available including fresh popcorn, apple cider, donuts from Janik’s Orchard, and Depner’s famous Gummi Chicken Feet. Weekday reservations are now available for groups of

Depners would like to thank DeKalb for donating 400,000 kernels of seed corn to plant the maze, the Farmers CoOperative Grain Company of Kinde and Kelterborn Farms for their services, and Dale Ricker of Bad Axe Pest Control for taking the drone photo. They would like to recognize Bonnie Lalley, Beth Wilton and The Rivers Edge Community Church youth group for helping to carve the maze. Last but not least, they would like to thank area businesses, friends, neighbors and devoted farm guests who have shown their support over the years. Depner Farms will be open during the months of September and October; from noon to 10:30 p.m. Saturday and from 1 p.m. to dusk Sunday. Additional Labor Day weekend hours include a daytime and flashlight maze on Friday, Sept. 4 (The farm will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7). All activities are weather-permitting and subject to change. Daytime farm admission will be $9 for adults (ages 13 and up), $7 for kids (ages 4-12) and free for ages 3 and under. One price covers the maze and most
activities during the afternoon. An additional $1 applies on Saturday evenings. Each person is required to carry a flashlight and may bring their own or rent one at the gate. Portable toilets are available on-site. Appropriate outdoor attire such as shoes, sunglasses and hats are recommended, including baby backpacks and strollers with larger wheels. For impatient parents, a baby ejection seat is located inside the maze. Bear-proof sleeping bags are optional for those who are directionally-challenged. “We take great pride in offering a fun and safe, familyfriendly environment for all ages,” says Depner. “Parents know that we have strict rules and try our best to discourage drugs, alcohol, smoking and inappropriate behavior. We believe that’s why so many families keep coming back to visit us each year.” In addition to their fall activities, Depners also operate a “cut-your-own” Christmas tree lot which opens Thanksgiving day. Tentative hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with many Blue Spruce trees to choose from. Saws are provided. For more information, call 989-856-4688 or visit www. DepnerFarms.com.

Thumb Octagon Barn Fall Family Days planned for Sept. 12-13 Fish fry fundraiser set for Sept. 11 By Rich Harp For the Tribune
GAGETOWN — For years, the Thumb Octagon Barn Fall Family Days have offered people a chance to take a step back in time. For senior citizens, it is a chance to reminisce about simpler times. Kids also will be fascinated by a style of life that existed long before anything they’ve learned from the 21st Century. The festival will take place Sept. 12-13. Events will run from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day. A fish fry fundraiser will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11. For those wishing to hang around Friday night, they can enjoy music in the barn until 9 p.m. Opening ceremonies are scheduled to take place at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. A country style breakfast will be ongoing from 8 to 10 a.m. Afterward, patrons can visit vendors, listen to
music, and watch demonstrations throughout the day. Big tractor parades are scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. on both days. Breakfast will also be served Sunday, but will continue until 11 a.m. A Gospel Sing is planned for 10 a.m., with many activities to follow. This year, over 200 vendors have registered to show their wares on the grounds of the Octagon Barn. According to Fall Fun Days Chairperson Martin Kubacki, this year’s theme is Trees are Our Friends. In conjunction with this, there will be a Theme Tent set up on premises. Those visiting the tent will learn about the history of trees. In addition, some of the large fires in Michigan and in Huron County will be discussed. Free tree seedlings are scheduled to be given to those visiting the tent. See “Octagon” • 18

And should a title problem arise in the future, an Owner’s Policy of Title Insurance can provide complete protection – even to the point of paying for legal representation. Title insurance isn’t something homeowners should think about. It’s simply something they should have.

OCTAGON: Fall Family Days to include great food, entertainment and live demonstrations From 17
In keeping with the Trees Theme, Smokey the Bear will be on the grounds. Smokey and Johnny Appleseed will be available to visit with kids, youth and really big kids. The really big kids are often known as adults, but it’s hard to tell the difference between them and children as they tend to relive their childhoods during the Fall Family Days. Demonstrations depicting common lifestyles of the early 1900s will be highlighted on the grounds. These demonstrations include the making of ice cream, fresh fried donuts, and fresh pressed apple cider — and that’s just to name a few. According to Kubacki, pressing of sorghum can also be seen at this event. And if this isn’t enough, horse drawn wagon rides and barrel train rides will
be available. There will also be ongoing thrashing and field demonstrations. A blacksmith will be on hand to show his skills. A shingle mill and forge will be in operation, as well as a saw mill, planer, edger, and buzz saw, and many, many more things of interest. Of course, all of these will be done in the style of days gone by. The Fall Family Days and Octagon Barn is located at 6948 Richie Road. The site is one and a half miles east of Gagetown, and one mile north of Bay City-Forestville Road on Richie Road. Admission is $5 for anyone 6 years old and over. Children 5 years old and under are admitted in for free. For more information, visit www.thumboctagonbarn.org. Tribune File Photo

Dancers have a great time during last year’s Mama Ruth Festival. Music and dancing will be on tap all day long at this year’s event. A country store will be available for those who love to shop. The store will sell quilts, rugs, baked good, fresh vegetables, used items and more. Las Vegas style games and bingo will be available for those who wish a chance to try their luck. And for those who like to get down and dirty, the mud volleyball tournament will return.
Kids attending the event will have a blast. A petting type zoo is scheduled to be set up on the church grounds. Youngsters will have a chance to play a variety of games, win prizes, and take train rides around the property. Of course, they are welcome to join the fun on the dance floor. The crowning event (no pun
intended) will be the selection of this year’s Mama Ruth. That special lady will be named and crowned during the 8:30 a.m. mass at St. Peter and Paul Church. As in the past, Mama Ruth must meet certain requirements to be awarded the honor. She must be a senior citizen, and she must be an active member of the parish.

Tales from the freshwater seas Why sailboats go aground — and sink
Sailboats are commonly victims of grounding. Their design is the main reason. Unlike powerboats, sail vessels go aground because of their deep keel, (some much deeper than others). Many of these groundings
are avoidable. Mariners fail to recognize the reason frequent groundings occur, which is panic. If a sailor finds himself Capt. Fred suddenly in Davis shallow water, he often turns the rudder sharply to one side or the other. If the rudder is turned quickly, it can throw

the hull aground. If the rudder were turned slightly or slowly, it may glance off the bottom and avoid a hard grounding. Most sailboat keels can withstand a slight grounding and suffer little or no damage but the harder the grounding the greater the damage. Keel designs, of which there are many, often dictate the amount of damage. Some keel types are easier than others to remove from grounding. The same can be said for rudders. Some sailboat rudders ground in deeper water than others. Like keels, rudder designs vary and the deeper the keel, rudder or both extend below the waterline, the deeper the water must be to avoid grounding. Although the previous statement is simply common sense, it is often ignored. Lets put it another way, for any vessel — the deeper the protrusion from the bottom, the greater depth required to avoid grounding. Most sail boaters quickly learn the consequences of shallow water. There are many ways to reduce the possibility of grounding as well as a variety of ways to reduce damage caused from hitting the bottom. See “wreck” • 21

WRECK: Tales from the freshwater seas No. 20 From 20
Many sailboats have depth indicators but if they are not properly calibrated, they can lead to greater problems. If a depth indicator is installed on any kind of a vessel, it needs to be calibrated to match the deepest running part of the boat. This enables it to read the depth of the bottom below the keel or rudder, not just the hull. In a few designs, the depth of the running gear may be an issue. In addition to the depth of the keel or rudder, there are other factors to consider when removing a sailboat from grounding. What is the keel design; is it fixed to the hull or a drop centerboard? One design is the sump keel which has a deep well-like area into which excess water can run. This design often allows for a pump installation in the sump area which collects water from loose fittings, shaft logs or even rough seas. The area where the sump is located can be weaker than the rest of the keel and if the boat encounters a hard grounding, a hole can occur. This is especially true if a sailboat is being removed from grounding by reversing. In reverse, you could ground by the trailing edge of the keel which is usually where the sump area is located. As owner, operator of a towing and salvage company on the Great Lakes for over 30 years, I encountered many sailboats aground or sunk. The following descriptions depict just a few. 1. A keel grounded in rocks often necessitates a diver to evaluate the damage and suggest
ways to remove the boat from its grounding. Without a diver’s inspection, attempts to remove it could cause greater damage. They will look for bends at the keel or rudder bottom. 2. Attempting to heel a sail vessel by the mast while stuck in rocks, mud or sand can result in the keel separating from the hull. The keel bolts may be pulled right through the hull. Racing class sailboats often have deeper drafts and their captains require a very clear knowledge of the bottom structure they will encounter when entering unfamiliar ports. 3. A sailboat sinking at the dock presents a difficult recovery. Often the cause of the sinking is a lightening strike to the sailboats mast. The strike travels down the mast to the waterline where it blows holes in fittings and grounds out to the shore through any metal portion of the dock. A sailor should always be aware of how he wants his vessel removed from grounding even if he is receiving service from a towing expert. There are numerous ways to remove a vessel from grounding — some are quite simple, others could increase the damage. If you are offered assistance by a Good Samaritan, express gratitude but ask if you can direct the job. If you have a professional helping you, discuss their plan — if you don’t like the way they intend to proceed, continue to discuss it. Capt. Fred Davis is a retired charter and towing captain and nationally published author of

Thousands to flock to Kinde Polka Fest on Sept. 19-20 New entertainment set for Sept. 18 By Rich Harp For the Tribune
KINDE — Parisville is renowned as the oldest Polish settlement in Michigan. But when it comes to pure Polish festivities, no one outdoes Kinde, Michigan. For the 10th year in a row, the Kinde Polka Fest will bring thousands of people to the area to have fun. Kinde resident and business owner, Kevin Wiley, spearheads the festival. Wiley, along with his wife, Helen, spend untold hours each year preparing for the event. With the help of many volunteers, the Kinde Polka Fest has become a phenomenal success in Huron County. This year, the Kinde Polka Fest will take place on Sept. 19
and 20. There will be a polka mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church east of town. For the first time, there will be special entertainment on Friday (Sept. 18). The Wileys estimate between 6,000 and 8,000 people were drawn to the Kinde area due to the festival last year. This includes participants in the 5K run, the softball tournament, the Sunday breakfast at the local school and the music. And to be perfectly clear, the music is the No. 1 drawing card. Eight bands will perform Saturday and Sunday. Local band Darrel Weltin and The New Brass Express will play on Saturday. See “polka” • 23

POLKA: Many bands lined up From 22
Local band The Natural Tones will play on Sunday. The other bands are from out of this area or from other states. All have well known reputations. Darrell Weltin and The New Brass Express, Dyna Brass, Box On, and the Polish Connection will play on Saturday. Stephanie, The Natural Tones, and One More Shot will entertain on Sunday. Adult admission will be $15 each day. The cost for ages 16 to 20 is $10 each day, and kids under 16 years old get in for free. Food, beverages and adult refreshments are available on site. The Wiley’s are pleased with the festival’s overall success. But now, in its 10th year, they felt it was time to shake things up. On Friday night, the promoters will bring in Jenni Lynn and the Ruckus. The Clare, Michigan band plays country western music and some classic rock. “It’s the new thing this year,” Wiley said. “We’ve been trying to do this for years, trying to build up a Friday night venue. It was all about price and timing.” He went on to say it was not just his idea to bring in this type of entertainment. “We’ve listened to people and they said they’d like us to up to mix it up,” Wiley noted. They hope it will be a big success, but nothing is guaranteed. “Will this be a test run? You bet,” Wiley said.
Wiley went on to say the Kinde Polka Fest’s sponsors are the only reason it is such a huge success. It is not uncommon for them to donate tens of thousands of dollars to the event. “Our sponsors are our mainstay,” he said. The sponsors are not contacted by mail or by e-mail. “We have personal contact with each of our sponsors,” Wiley explained. Wiley said the work done by his family and many volunteers is to keep Kinde a viable place to live. “The driving factor is seeing what it does,” Wiley said. “That’s what keeps driving us.” He made it clear the festival is not just about him and his wife. “It isn’t two people,” he said. “It’s a small army.” The goal of the festival is to give back to the community. “It’s about our community and our school,” Wiley noted, adding the money raised by the event’s various activities is not a free gift back to the town. Organizations are expected to earn it. He said the philosophy is based on the principle of “Earn while you learn.” In this case, school organizations work at the festival and keep the profits. For instance, the track team will run the 5K race and keep the profits. A group will run the softball tournament and keep those profits. The concessions will be run by another group and they will reap those

During the two weekends of thrilling and scary excitement, campers can expect to

Family Fun Festival is a free event set for Sept. 19 By Rich Harp For the Tribune
BAD AXE — The waiting is over for all kids — and all adults who wish they were kids. The annual Family Fun Festival will take place on the grounds of Faith Gospel Tabernacle on Saturday, Sept. 19. The site is located on Rescue Road, one quarter mile west of M-53. For a decade, the event was held at City Park in Bad Axe. Last year, it was moved to Rescue Road, and it will be there again this year. Obviously, it was a success, with an estimated 1,100 people attending. Pastor Mike Beeler feels the event will draw more people this year. “I expect there to be 1250 (people) or more,” he said. The present venue is stra-
tegically located between Bad Axe, Ubly, Cass City, OwenGage and Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Laker School Districts. As an added advantage, Caro is not far from the festival either. “This makes it more a Thumb day of family fun, rather than a Bad Axe day of family fun,” Beeler said. Last year, more people from Cass City attended the event than from any other community. The big surprise for Beeler was Harbor Beach area residents. That group had the second highest number of attendees. It is no surprise area residents flock to the festival. Everything is offered for free, including food, music, gifts and prizes. One must register to access all of the activities, food and prize drawings. This year, two known bands will entertain throughout the afternoon. Livingstones will
return after a short hiatus, having played at Faith Gospel last month. Veracity will be there for the first time, as well as other local talent. A number of groups and agencies will be on hand to display their wares or give demonstrations or free gifts. Longshot Bowling Lanes, Positive Alternatives, the Huron County Health Department, H.A.G., Great Start, massage therapist Lisa Susalla, and others will attend. As in the past, large numbers of volunteers will be on hand to help run the event. Student council members from area schools, the National Honor Society, and church volunteers are expected to help out with this special event. Not just food, but fun food will be on the agenda throughout the entire day. Hot dogs, snow cones or frozen drinks, cotton candy, popcorn, beverages and other treats will be available. Of course, it’s all free. See “family” • 27

Come rain or shine, the festival will go on.

Amongst the campsite-decorating contest, there will also be hayrides all day both Saturdays, pumpkin decorating contests, costume contests for the little ones and much more. On Oct. 3 and 10, a DJ will jam out in the campground’s pavilion to the latest hits, as well as some Halloween favorites like the, “Monster Mash.” Other activities going on between the two weekends at the campground include: • Arts and crafts with the local Girl Scout’s troop on Saturdays in the camp pavilion. • The Harbor Beach Conservation Club will have an exhibition both Saturday afternoons. • The Harbor Beach Fire Department will have smokehouse available with demonstrations on how to properly escape your home, if a fire were to ever occur. The department will be present Oct. 3 and 10 for the presentations. Also kicking off Oct. 2 and 3 will be the Harvest Festival Weekend at Sleeper State Park, in Caseville. On Oct. 3 and 4, Caseville will host its Halloween Weekend at the Caseville County Park. Elsewhere in the Thumb, trick-or-treaters can find many spots to grab all of their sugary needs. Can’t make it to either of those? No problem. United Protestant Church in Port Austin will host a trick-or-treat for local residents who live in the country to have an opportunity to hand out candy to the youngsters.

13th PumpkinFest planned to roll into Caseville Oct. 3-4 By Chris Aldridge Tribune Staff Writer
CASEVILLE — The 13th annual PumpkinFest is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 4. All the usual activities are planned: the business scarecrow-making contest judged by the community, pumpkin decorating contest and kids’ carnival, and popular festival staples: the pumpkin roll at the county park near the amphitheater and lighted parade. Promoted as family- and kid-oriented, PumpkinFest is an affordable opportunity for families to do something nice on the weekend to welcome fall, says past event coordinator Terri Born. “It’s not as huge (as Cheeseburger), but each year it grows,” Born said. People can spread out blankets and build scarecrows with all materials provided, she said. City streets, light posts and businesses in Caseville are traditionally decorated festively during PumpkinFest. The lighted parade is also a treat to the eye with floats roll-
ing down Main Street during the nighttime. This year mark’s the third time organizers plan to run the parade, which Born said was a big hit last year. Born says a more definite schedule of events, as well as possible new activities this year, will be known in coming weeks. Check the Tribune as the festival nears for updates. According to last year’s schedule, the pumpkin decorating contest started at 10 a.m. Saturday with judging at 4 p.m. The giant pumpkin contest was from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a winner announced by 4:30 p.m. Other Saturday activities last year included cookie decorating from 11 a.m. to noon, the pumpkin roll at noon, scarecrow contest at the same time, kids carnival from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (tickets two for $1 or 12 for $5), and the lighted parade at 8 p.m. Family scarecrow building was from noon to 5 p.m. ($7/ small, $10/large). Sunday activities last year started off with a pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m., free

A jolly good time to go on at Nov. 7 Holly Berry Fair in Caseville By Bradley Massman Tribune Staff Writer
CASEVILLE — For the 48th year running, shoppers and vendors galore will gather inside Caseville High School for another fun-filled day of holiday shopping. The Holly Berry Fair, sponsored by the Caseville Library Club, will host its annual holiday expo from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. Something that sets the Holly Berry Fair apart from other shopping extravagant adventures you may encounter during this holiday season are the items offered. “Everything sold (at the fair) are handmade items,” said Bonnie Dunstan, chairperson for the library club. “I try to make sure that’s always the case. I always ask each vendor what type of items they are bringing or making.” Dunstan, who has been helping with the fair for the last four years, expects the average turnout of around 130 booths this year. Holiday-shoppers can find of variety of Christmas-like items, handmade items like hats and dish towels, yearround outdoor pieces and
much more. “There’s a few vendors who have so much, they typically need two booths,” she explained. The money raised through the vendors at the fair goes toward various charities, sponsors and scholarships, Dunstand said. The library club donates to at least four different scholarships to Caseville students, and also gives funds to Scheurer Hospital and Caseville Public Schools.
“My favorite thing about (the fair) is where the money is going,” Dunstan said. “I like the fact that it’s helping other people out.” A few charities the club also donates to include Habitat for Humanity, Thumb Industries, Port Austin Community Players, Caseville Community Christmas Fund, and many others. So beat the crowd this holiday season and fill all of your shopping needs when you visit the Holly Berry Fair.

Number of Christmas events planned for the Thumb By Rich Harp For the Tribune
UPPER THUMB — Several communities are preparing for Christmas. Information for these events has been drawn from a variety of chambers of commerce or other sources. On Dec. 12, will come alive with Christmas and other fun activities planned throughout the town. Although kids will be a top priority, senior citizens will not be forgotten. A free meal will be provided for them at the city hall, and it is sponsored by the Methodist Church. Kids will have a great time at the fire hall. Santa will be there to meet and greet the children. A big gift/prize drawing is expected at 3 p.m. at that location. The annual soup tasting will take place around town, starting at 12:30 p.m. Last year, 14 merchants and organizations served
soup for a tasting contest. About the same number is expected this year. In addition, free horse drawn wagon rides are planned for that day. As might be expected, the City of Bad Axe may draw the largest crowds during the season. According to the Bad Axe Chamber of Commerce President Mark Lundquist, Mistletoe Market will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Nov. 14 at the middle school. On that same day, a Holiday Scavenger Hunt will take place throughout the town, starting at 10 a.m. at the Gathering Place. The Christmas parade, most likely the largest in the county, will take place on Nov. 28. It is scheduled to run downtown Bad Axe, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Jim Roland and Ann Massey will spearhead the event. Harbor Beach has several things to offer this holiday sea-

son. Small Town Saturday takes place Nov. 28. Merchants will be offering Christmas specials and a customer prize drawing will take place during the day. Dec. 5 is the big day for Harbor Beach. The United Methodist Church will sponsor a cookie walk. Coordinator Pam Semp said there will be hundreds of dozens of cookies to be purchased. They will also accept mail orders. Zion Lutheran will host its ever-popular annual bake sale and luncheon. The 30th Annual Christmas Parade will take place that evening, and it is expected to be one of the largest parades in the county. The annual Community Christmas Sing will take place at Dec. 17 at Zion Lutheran Church, sponsored by the local ministerial association. For more information, call Mark Ryan at 989-479-6053. The small village of Port Hope plans to keep the Christmas spirit alive with a Christmas Tree Lighting on Dec. 1 at dusk. Santa arrives at 5:30 p.m. at the Rubicon Township Hall. Before Santa arrives, the town will meet there for the annual Christmas sing-along at 4:30 p.m. Snacks will be provided. Chamber member Michael Potter of Pigeon said there will be free bean soup at 11 a.m. Nov. 28. It will be served until it is gone. He warns it is first-
come, first-serve. Bean soup lovers need to be there early. Santa comes to Pigeon on Dec. 5 for the annual Santa Greets and Treats day. The location and time will be determined later. Although Kinde does not have any specific Christmas events planned, the annual pasta buffet fundraiser for Toys for Tots will take place Nov. 16. Huron County Sheriff’s Deputy Kelly Leavine said the fundraiser at the Pasta House in Kinde is huge. “They donate everything that night,” she said. “It’s amazing. They’ve been helping us out for several years. They’re very generous.” Last year, that fundraiser earned about $1,700 for Toys for Tots. In addition to the fundraiser, the sheriff’s department will do the gift give-a-way in Kinde. The toys will be stored in Kinde and given away to those that qualify at the school on Dec. 12. They expect 250-300 kids will get gifts that day. The Women’s life Chapter of Ubly will be on hand to wrap the toys. “Kinde does a lot for Toys for Tots,” Leavine said. Caseville will be the site of a popular annual event this year. The Holly Berry Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 7 at Caseville Public School. The promoters, The Caseville Library Club, expect about 125 vendors to be on hand. Food will be

served, and the ever popular sloppy joe will be featured. Profits from the fair will go to benefit nearly 20 charities. The Caseville Kiwanis Club plans to hold its annual luncheon with Santa. The date has not yet been confirmed. As usual, it will take place at the Eagles Club. Kids will receive a free lunch, and Santa will give each a bag of candy. There will be a free raffle for several bicycles and they will be raffled according to gender and age. Port Austin has planned a big Silver Bells celebration on Dec. 5. Several events are planned, although specifics were not available when this publication went to press. There will be sales and specials throughout town. The United Protestant Church will hold a Christmas Bazaar Luncheon, and vendors will attend. The Friends of the Library will hold a cookie walk. A holiday raffle will take place at the welcome center in the afternoon. Several events are planned at the Port Austin History Center. Traditional crafts will be on sale, with proceeds going to benefit the center. A Make and Take Christmas Decoration event will take place at the center during day. It will be open to anyone interested in making that type of homemade craft.
