Caseville serves up some delicious fun this weekend By Seth Stapleton Tribune Staff Writer
CASEVILLE — The seventh annual Caseville Country Ribstock is scheduled to take place this weekend (June 26-28) — and it is part of six straight weekends of big events taking place in the city. The event is anchored by a country music vibe played by up-and-coming bands and finger-licking good ribs prepared and served by some of the area’s top restaurants. “I’m really excited about Ribstock this year,” said Steve Louwers, president of the Caseville Area Chamber of Commerce. “It’s going to be a great start to our summer season.” Ribstock has slowly become one of the chamber’s top events of the summer, but organizers are still figuring out ways to make it that much better for festivalgoers. Louwers said Ribstock organizers listened to the people, and will be opening the famous ribs tent on Friday night. In the past, it has only been open on Saturday. “A lot of people were looking for ribs at the tents on Friday night,” Louwers said. So far, a total of seven restaurants have committed to the tent on Friday to grill up versions of both baby back and St. Louis style ribs, along with many other tasty treats such as pulled pork, hot dogs, onion
rings, french fries, donuts and other deserts. The tent runs from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Caseville County Park. Along with great food, attendees will be treated to great music, with two headliners performing back-to-back Friday night. Beginning at 7 p.m., David Shelby will get things started at the amphitheater, followed by Brian Lorrente and the Usual Suspects. Also taking place on Friday is the third annual Amateur Rib Cook-Off, with cash prizes going to first through third place winners. Winners will be announced at 8:45 p.m. that night at the amphitheater. On Saturday, the Annual Rib Cook-Off will take place rain or shine at the county park. The event runs from noon to 8 p.m., with judging concluding at 6 p.m. Music begins at 5 p.m. and runs to 11 p.m., with Rye Whiskey taking the stage, followed by Dani Vantany and Ten Hands Tall. Allen Turner and the Steel Horse Band will conclude the night. Many other family-friendly activities also will run throughout the day, including a sand castle building contest, ice

cream eating contest, duck pond, three little pigs races and moonlight shopping. An official Ribstock horseshoe tournament also is in the works. In past years, Louwers said the event averaged around 1,000 to 1,200 passes sold for the weekend. This year, the price is the same at $5 for a weekend of entertainment. See “ribstock” • 3

Huron County’s Relay for Life starts Saturday By Chris Aldridge Tribune Staff Writer
BAD AXE — Huron County’s Relay For Life will again bring the fight to cancer in Bad Axe City Park in a 24-hour event on Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28. This year, lead event organizer Davina Maurer says the Relay hopes to raise $75,000 to help fund cancer research, and register 150 cancer survivors. “So we can find the cures for what can be treated,” Maurer said. The American Cancer Soci-
ety’s 2015 estimates show 251 new cancer cases reported in Huron County, with 101 mortalities. Cancer claims 185 deaths per 100,000, above the state rate of 178, according to a report prepared by the Huron County Health Department and delivered to county officials last December. Diabetes is blamed for almost 26 deaths, up from the state rate of about 24, according to the report. Maurer thinks of the annual event as a great emotional support system for those diag-
nosed and surviving, and a way to honor those that have died from cancer. This year’s theme is “Knock Cancer Out of the Park.” The event is most notably symbolized by its luminaria ceremony, when participants take a walk around the park at night alongside candlelit bags — the names on which serve to memorialize those lost and support others with cancer. Maurer calls it a bonding experience. “Once you see all the bags lit up at night around the track, you really see how many are affected,” Maurer said. “When

you’re looking at just over 1,000 bags, and you’re walking around at night in silence with a little bit of music in the background, yes, it’s very humbling.” This year, the names also will scroll on a projector screen through midnight.
Maurer says it’s also important that those attending learn of cancer. “The goal is to educate too — that’s important,” she said. They hope to teach prevention and awareness. See “relay” • 6

“By bringing the ribs in on Friday, I strongly believe a lot more people are going to be going to the concert on Friday,” Louwers said. Louwers said last year a total of around 20,000 ribs were sold. Again, he thinks ribs being offered on Friday will help bolster that number. “Being that we’re going to do it on Friday, I’d like to see what we can do,” he said. “Maybe we can surpass the 25,000 mark —
that would be my goal.” Rounding things out on Sunday will be a chamber fundraiser from noon to 3 p.m. The fundraiser includes ribs and other food under the tent, while entertainment is provided by Music Doctors.
“You’re going to be able to go into that tent and basically get anything you want for a pretty minimal price,” Louwers said. For more information on Ribstock, visit www.casevillechamber.net.

New carnival gets added to Cass City Freedom Festival By Seth Stapleton Tribune Staff Writer
CASS CITY — The 37th annual Cass City Freedom Festival takes place July 2-5 and event organizers are certain you will find something you’ll like. “We really like to stress that it’s great family fun for all,” said Cass City Chamber Interim President Carrie Luana. “There’s something for everyone. We’re hoping this is our
biggest year yet.” Luana said organizers are hoping a big draw this year will be the new carnival that has been added to the list of events. The full-blown carnival with big-time rides will take place July 2-4 at the city park area. Daily entrance into the carnival for unlimited rides will cost $20 per wristband, but if you take advantage of the presale organizers are having, the cost is only $12 each.

The carnival is one of only a few paid events in the festival, as organizers strive each year to offer free or affordable events for festivalgoers. One of those free offerings is the Summer Mania in July event, which has combined with the festival this year and takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, July 3. Included in Summer Mania is lunch, inflatables, snow cones and cotton candy, face painting, crafts, a
magic show and a 150-balloon release to commemorate the 150-year anniversary of Cass City — all at Rotary Park downtown. The annual craft show runs from noon to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday in the park. The Great Parade will kick things off on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. downtown. Other top events include the a petting zoo and pony rides, Classic Car Show, entertain-

Port Austin to celebrate July 4 By Seth Stapleton Tribune Staff Writer
PORT AUSTIN — Thousands of people flock to Port Austin to celebrate America’s freedom each year. The annual Port Austin Fourth of July parade will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 4. It is organized by the Village of Port Austin and Port Austin Chamber of Commerce. “We have a lot of interesting things in our parade that families — both adults and kids alike — really enjoy,” said Chamber Director Joyce Stanek. “It’s just a lot of fun.” Because this year hits on a Saturday and runs during the popular Port Austin Farmers’ Market, the market will go an additional two hours from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. that day. Stanek said this is to give the parade time to get through before vendors make their way out. The chamber typically expects around 100 parade entries each year and anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 attendees. With the event falling on a Saturday, that number could be higher. The parade start point and line-up area is the same as last year, in the far right lane of Grindstone Road/M-25 facing west after Adams Street. The first block between Lake Street and Adams Street is reserved

RELAY: Twenty-four hour event From 3
During a “fight back/survivor ceremony,” participants are asked to share examples of preventative measures, like not using a tanning booth or identifying kinds of cancer screenings, Maurer said. Though the atmosphere may seem solemn, Maurer says the Relay is a familyoriented event — and there is plenty of entertainment already planned with other possibilities in the works. A 5K Ribbon Run will feature 24 themed laps every hour. Some include a superhero theme, at 3 p.m.; silly sunglasses and hats, 5 p.m.; Michigan vs. Michigan State, 10 p.m.; pajama and stuffed animal, 1 a.m.; and fairy tale, 8 a.m. Sunday. “We change it up so it’s more lively, and it’s fun to see people dress up,” Maurer said. A butterfly release, sponsored by Huron Behavioral Health, is scheduled for 3:55 p.m. Friday. New for this year are caricature drawings from noon to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. “My goal is to try to bring more of the youth,” said Maurer. “A lot of them do have family members that have been through cancer treatments.” Some of those youth include Bad Axe music students, who take the stage 10:30 a.m. Friday. The entertainment doesn’t stop there. Fiend Fyre Charmers, a “fire art group,” takes the
stage at 7:30 p.m. The group has previously performed at the Mid Michigan Renaissance Festival. Brad Goodwin – whose Facebook page labels him a one-man band from Marlette “providing an eclectic mix of folk songs, ballads, love songs, light blues and light rock” — is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Goodwin also performed at Relay For Life at Bay Shore Camp in May. Monroe-based country music band Rye Whiskey, which organizers say has been invited back by popular demand, is scheduled for 10 p.m. The Relay has been held in Huron County for at least a decade. In 2008, the event helped raise $101,000. There were 25 teams that helped in the effort. But donations have lessened over the years. Last year, the total was about $86,000, with
123 survivors registered and 17 teams. By mid-May, Maurer said organizers had gained close to $32,000 from 12 teams. “There were 25 teams in 2011; this year we’re sitting at 12,” Maurer said. Money is raised through local businesses or individuals sponsoring the event, team fundraising before and during the Relay, online donations, silent auctions, a raffle, the 5K Ribbon Run and the cake auction. Those who would like to purchase luminary bags, make a private donation, volunteer the day of, become a committee member or have questions, may contact Davina Maurer at 989551-8369 or davina.maurer@att. net. She asks that those calling be sure to leave a message in regard to the reason for the call. More information is available at www.relayforlife.com/huroncountymi, and at the Relay For Life of Huron County, Michigan, Facebook page. Multiple activities are scheduled every hour. Port Hope may be a small town, but it still has the big welcome. According to Elaine Reinke, committee member for the 29th annual Fourth of July Festival, the crowds have grown over the past couple years, and she expects nothing to change this year. The weekend kicks off Friday morning, July 3, with a
breakfast sponsored by St. John Lutheran School. It runs 7 to 10 a.m. and will be held at the Hope Activity Center, formerly the location of the Port Hope School. The breakfast will also be offered Saturday and Sunday mornings. See “Port Hope” • 10
FOURTH: Parade is at 1 p.m. July 4 From 5
The parade route will begin at the intersection of North Van Dyke Road/M-53 and Grindstone Road/M-25. The parade continues north on M-53 through the downtown, then turns west on to West Spring Street/M-25 and travels six more blocks to Gallup Park. Stanek reminds parade attendees that this year, there will be no parking allowed on Lake Street and West Spring Street along the parade route from 12:30 p.m. until the end of the parade. Following the parade, the Port Austin Historical Society will be hosting a band concert at the Welcome Center. The concert is taking place for the
first time this year. Later in the day, the annual fireworks display begins at dusk around 10 p.m. at the Port Austin Harbor. This year the city, with the support of volunteers, raised over $19,000 for the best fireworks display yet. The top viewing spots for the spectacle are Bird Creek County Park, Veterans Waterfront Park or the harbor. A recreational passport is required to park in the harbor parking lot. For a parade application form and a map, or for more details, visit www.villageofportaustin.com or call 989-7385199 to have the information emailed or faxed to you.

Nationally known Christian band coming to Bad Axe on July 9 By Rich Harp For the Tribune
BAD AXE — A nationallyknown band, Unspoken, will play July 9 at Faith Gospel Tabernacle, located 10 miles south of Bad Axe on Rescue Road. They’re expected to play to a packed house — a venue with 400 seats. With two Top 5 singles (Who You Are & Lift My Life Up) and several successful tours, one would expect a band of this caliber to play in a much larger venue. Pastor Mike Beeler of Faith Gospel is delighted to have this level of entertainment at his church. He has been working with a major promoter for the past several months to make this happen. “We are excited to partner with Del Rey Promotions to bring family-friendly entertainment to the Thumb area
with the Unspoken concert on July 9,” said Beeler. “We realize that most of the time you would have to travel to Saginaw, Midland or Detroit to see this caliber of entertainment. But not that night. It’s coming to the Upper Thumb.” The band is made up of members from Maine, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. This cultural diversity gives them musical diversity. “The mix lends subtle flavors

to the music beneath strong pop sensibilities,” the band’s website states. Unspoken’s lead singer, Chad Mattson, explained he previously was into high school sports and he had no interest in music. “I was always into sports, and music wasn’t that fun,” he said. But music wasn’t a simple transition from sports. “When sports dwindled and
my life fell apart, I turned to alcohol and drugs,” he said. “I didn’t get serious about music until I got sober and gave my life to God.” At the age of 17, he learned to play music in his bedroom. “God told me to use music to share the message of the gospel,” he said. “I wasn’t serious about music until I got serious about God.” The new revelation started over a decade ago when he

found a new freedom on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Since then, he has joined Mike Gomez, Jon Lowry and Ariel Munoz to form Unspoken, and to spread the good news about the gospel. Several of Mattson’s songs detail his ever changing story about his recovery and his turn from dark to light. See “unspoken” • 12

UNSPOKEN: Performs July 9 From 11
Some of these songs include Who You Are, Lift My Life Up, and Start a Fire, Good Fight, Call it Grace, and Tomorrow. The group has had several successful tours with well-known groups like Sanctus Real and Bid Daddy Weave. Unspoken is the second nationally known entertainer/group to come to Faith Gospel Tabernacle in the
past year. Last July, Christian Songwriter/Artist of the Year Josh Wilson played before a packed house. The concert also included Livingstones, a popular Michigan band. They will return this year for the July 9 event. “It’s family-friendly and affordable,” Beeler said. “Last year’s event was a wonderful success, and our expectations are higher this year.”

Maritime Fest kicks off July 9 By Rich Harp For the Tribune
HARBOR BEACH — The Harbor Beach Maritime starts July 9 and runs through July 12. To say the festival is jammed packed with activities is an understatement. It is nearly impossible to see and do everything offered in those four days. At one time, the roar of professionally ridden jet skis could be heard throughout town for three straight days. That is no longer the case. Yet, the Maritime theme is kept very much alive by the efforts of H&R Block and their H&R Block Invitational. The invitational will run on

coordinating this area of Maritime. Bands will play from Friday at 4:20 p.m. until Sunday afternoon. Two stages are set up for the bands. One is under the Maritime tent and the other is at the beach. Bands they will rotate stages throughout the event. The incredible fact is there is no charge for any of the performances. This year, 13 bands will perform. “We have more bands than ever before,” Ramsey said. “It’s our best lineup in the history of the festival.” Last year, Rag Birds played in Harbor Beach for the first time. Although they were not the headliners, Ramsey was excited to have them. “They are the headliners for a lot of festivals,” Ramsey said. “You’d expect to pay up to $70 for a ticket elsewhere. Here, you see them for free.” The big difference is the Rag Birds are the Maritime main attraction this year. “The Rag Birds are our headliners,” Ramsey said. “It’s a diverse group. MARITIME: Fun for folks of all ages Legion Hall on Trescott Street. The annual craft show will be located on the lawn of the Murphy Museum in the downtown area. Lighthouse tours will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The annual volleyball tournament starts at 10 a.m. on the beach and runs until it is finished, which is normally about 3 p.m. The hot dog eating competition starts soon after the tournament on the tent stage. Kids have not been forgotten by the festival committee. Inflatables will be available for children at Lincoln Park near the beach. A nature learning center will also be set up for the kids. In past years, snakes, spiders, frogs, animal hides and other fascinating things will be available to view. In some cases, with adult supervision, they will be able to actually pick up some of these scary creatures. Zion Motion will again perform this year. The elementary age tumblers are a big hit with kids and adults. Perhaps one of the most unusual events will be a frog jumping contest. It has become an annual event and draws a lot of attention. Kids are invited to compete, and, of course, they need a frog. Festivities continue through

“They travel the entire Midwest, although they’re out of Nashville,” Ramsey added. He went on to say the band played here last year and wanted to come back to Harbor Beach. They loved the area and the venue, so they came back this year.” They will play twice Saturday night, both times on the main stage at the beach. The first performance is scheduled for 9 p.m., and they will play until the Maritime fireworks show begins. Ubly Homecoming returns July 9 for another great year By Chris Aldridge Tribune Staff Writer
UBLY — Organizers have laid out plans for the village’s four-day homecoming — and, as usual, most events are free or low-cost to attend. Village-wide garage sales start Thursday morning, July 9, and continue throughout the weekend. Thursday, family night, includes an ice cream social, Kids Fun Run and a walking scavenger hunt for pre-teens and teens. Tractor pulls for kids and adults are on Friday and Saturday. The grand parade and live bands take the stage Sunday. There also will be mud a volleyball tournament. “A lot of people like it,” said Steve Irvine, who is in his first year as homecoming committee president. “It’s kind of a reunion of such.” A “reunion” that’s been going
annually for more than 20 years. Irvine says Saturday will be one of the bigger days. As with Friday, that’s when tractor pulls start, at 1 p.m., and a semi pull. “That’s kind of a big attraction,” Irvine said. Cost to attend the tractor pull is $8 for adults and $5 for children. Adult ticket purchases also buy admission into the beer tent. The event is a fundraiser, and proceeds go to the Lions Club and Lioness Club, Community Club, VFW, Thumb Veterans Organization and Thumb Veterans Auxiliary. The Homecoming 5K Run/ Walk starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at Village Park. The course has a combination of grass, gravel and blacktop surfaces along Ubly streets and finishes back at the park. For more information, costs and to register, visit www.ublyrun.com. As part of Thursday’s family
night, a 3/4-mile Kids Fun Run starts at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 9. Registration is at 5:30 p.m. at Village Park near the pavilion. The run is meant for kids ages four to 10. There’s an inflatable obstacle course at the end of the race. Also for the youngsters, lineup for Saturday’s kiddie parade starts at 10:45 a.m. Entrants are entered into a bicycle giveaway following the parade. Irvine said Sunday’s grand parade has been a big draw. Lineup starts at 11 a.m. in the Gemini parking lot, with the parade getting underway at 12:30 p.m., after judging. After that, the FFA hosts a chicken barbecue. For adults, the beer tent will open during the day Friday and Saturday, closing at 1 a.m. On tap will be domestic varieties like Budweiser. Cover charge is $3. For those feeling a little shaky afterward, Irvine said there will be TAT buses on site

“We probably estimate 1,000 people. ... (we) normally have really good attendance,” he added. One of the reasons for such high attendance, Louwers said, is the coinciding triathlon that takes place on July 12. For the fourth consecutive year, Tri To Finish is bringing an event to the area, this year called Caseville Movin’ and Groovin’ Triathlon. The triathlon includes a swim in Lake Huron, a bike course along the waterline
and more. But before athletes dive into the lake or take to the trails, they will have the opportunity to spend the previous night “groovin’” to the music of Motown — along with the expected crowd of locals and tourists. “It’s a wonderful thing to do in the middle of the summer on the weekend,” Louwers said. Later adding: “It’s going to be a fantastic tribute to Motown music.” The gates for the concert will open at 6:30 p.m., with music

Lighthouse to host 130th birthday celebration July 18 By Rich Harp For the Tribune
“Sharing a Community ...and a Commitment”
HARBOR BEACH — Nearly everyone in the area would guess the Harbor Beach lighthouse is old, but few would actually know it was built in 1885. Celebration of its 130th birthday is set for July 18. It’s a birthday party that’s been in the works for nearly two years. Guest speakers, authors, historians and artists from around the mid-west will be at the celebration. Lighthouserelated events will start at 10 a.m. and run throughout the day. They will culminate with
the lighting of the facility and with a fireworks display after dark. The lighthouse’s light has not been in operation, nor has it been an aid to navigation, for several years. With radar, GPS and other navigational technology, most lighthouses have been blackened. The Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society has taken steps to end this the night of the celebration. Through the generosity of more than 95 donors, the Society has raised over $65,000 to replace the original lens. See “lighthouse” • 18

Behind the scenes of every real estate transaction is the title insurance industry – a nationwide corps of detail-minded professionals who conduct in-depth searches to find and remedy any problems for the seller, buyer, or lender. Boundary disputes, liens, assessments, undisclosed heirs – the list of possible problems is considerable. Title professionals look for these problems. They then make every effort to resolve them so the deal can close and the home buyer can move in with peace of mind. And should a title problem arise in the future, an Owner’s Policy of Title Insurance can provide complete protection – even to the point of paying for legal representation. Title insurance isn’t something homeowners should think about. It’s simply something they should have.

LIGHTHOUSE: Fireworks at dusk From 16
The French made Fresnel lens was used in the lighthouse for 100 years. It has been removed and is now on display at the Grice House Museum in Harbor Beach. Creation of the new Fresnel replication has been in progress for the past several years, built through the efforts of Dan Spinella at Artworks Florida. With the replica in place, the Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society plans to light up the sky the night of July 18. For the first time in years, the light will be turned on and the lighthouse awakening will be accentuated with a fireworks show/display. The day-long celebration starts at 10 a.m. with lighthouse tours. A vessel carrying passengers to the lighthouse will run until 4 p.m. Tours cost $20 and can be
booked online. Society member Heather Legatz reminds everyone lighthouse gifts are available at the marina. “While in Harbor Beach visit the new Lighthouse Gift Shop located at the marina, the world’s smallest gift shop in the world’s greatest fresh water man-made harbor,” she said. At 11 a.m., a non-motorized parade will stream through in downtown Harbor Beach (line-up is at 10:30 a.m.). A lighthouse quilt show will run from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Harbor Beach Community House in downtown Harbor Beach. Entertainers and speakers will be in the beach area of the Judge James H. Lincoln Park from noon to 5 p.m. Some of these include Dennis Hale, Bob Kegerreis, Terry Pepper and Robert McGreevy. A food wagon will be in the

Hatchet Festival returns July 23-25 By Seth Stapleton Tribune Staff Writer
BAD AXE — After being put on hold for a year, the Bad Axe Hatchet Festival is back and ready to go this July 23-25. A dedicated group of local volunteers and chamber of commerce members have been working diligently since January to bring the festival back. “We wanted to build off the success of our Sidewalk Sales event and try to make the Hatchet Festival bigger and better than ever,” said Ann Massey, owner of Jennie’s Boutique and event coordinator. “We wanted to focus on bringing back the festival in order to drive people to Bad Axe.” While the Hatchet Festival Committee is putting the finishing touches on the event, a good outline of what will be taking place has been put together. Once everything is finalized, Massey said the chamber will be making up a brochure complete with a map of event times and locations that will be available for people to pick up at businesses around town.

In addition, Paws will be around to meet and greet kids and adults, and to have his picture taken with them. “Paws was a really big hit,” Murphy said. “He actually contacted us this year, and said he’d love to come back.” Sunday’s activities begin with an outdoor mass at 10:30 a.m., weather permitting. Afterward, the fun starts again. Vegasstyle games start at 11:30 a.m. A chicken and pork buffet dinner starts at noon, catered by Al’s Restaurant. Iron Hatchet takes off July 25 at new location By Seth Stapleton Tribune Staff Writer
BAD AXE — Over 20 obstacles including mud pits, dumpster dives and hay bales await participants of this year’s Iron Hatchet Extreme 5K race put on July 25 by Huron Medical Center. “You have the opportunity to get wet and get muddy, have a lot of fun and test your skills,” said HMC director of marketing Terry Atwell. “It’s kind of a neat thing — it’s for the beginner that wants to just come and have fun, to the athlete that wants to be competitive and prove their skills and beat their scores from previous years.” In its fourth year of existence, the unique event for adventurers and fitness
enthusiasts will boast a few changes this year. The main change will be the move to its new location at the area behind and in between the Goodwill and Kmart buildings off of North Van Dyke Road on the north end of town. The Huron County Fairgrounds had been the location the past three years. The race is being run in conjunction with the Bad Axe Hatchet Festival, which takes place July 23-25. Atwell said the move was made because the Huron Community Fair will be in town starting that weekend. Aside from the location, also new to this year’s event will be some different obstacles to challenge racers. See “iron” • 24

Aug. 7-9 marks Deckerville Homecoming By Rich Harp For the Tribune
DECKERVILLE — This year, the Deckerville Homecoming takes place Aug. 7-9. Although festivities will happen around town, the place to be is Wilson Park. If one can’t find something to do there, they don’t know what homecoming fun is. Treasurer Doug Regentin HEALTH CARE AND REHABILITATION CENTER “Our Goal Is Meeting Your Goal”
said everything kicks off Friday night (Aug. 7) at 5 p.m. with the annual tractor pull at Wilson Park. The pull is one of the big draws at the homecoming. After the tractor pull, the annual fireworks is scheduled at Deckerville Public School. The homecoming committee has a surprise for those waiting at the show. “One new thing on Friday is at 9:30 p.m., prior to the fire-
works,” said President Kerry Regentin. The group will introduce Sunshine Fire Entertainment. “They’re fire performers,” Kerry Regentin said. “They eat fire, they dance, and they perform with fire-wands. We’ll have signs directing people to the locations.” Fireworks will follow at dusk.

IRON: New rules considered From 22
“It should be real fun for everybody, from kids to adults,” Atwell said. “We have new obstacles for both.” Atwell said participation in the run has been consistent the past few years at around 170 — and officials are expecting the same or better this year with the change in date from June to July. Scheduled during the event will be the Tiny Tomahawk 1-Mile Run for kids 12 years old and younger, which costs $15, while the Individual Iron
Hatchet 5K is $40 and Team Iron Hatchet 5K is $140. Various team and individual divisions also exist for runners to take aim at winning. All participants will receive a T-shirt and medal, while prizes are awarded to first through third places in each individual and team category. Registration runs from 8 to 9 a.m., with the kids race beginning at 9 a.m., individuals at 10 a.m. and teams at 10:30 a.m. There will be designated parking
for event participants, so come to the Goodwill parking lot and you will be directed to the area. Atwell said the camaraderie between participants, volunteers and spectators help set this race apart from others. “What’s really cool is watching everyone challenge each other to kind of keep going and get through the obstacles,” she said. Cheeseburger in Caseville enters its 17th year By Casey Johnson Tribune Staff Writer
CASEVILLE — The Cheeseburger Festival is back for its 17th year, and organizers
expect the 10-day celebration to be just as popular as ever. “Once again it’s going to be better and bigger than years past,” said Steve Louwers, president of the Caseville Area Chamber of
Commerce. While plans for the festival — which runs from Aug. 14 to 23 — are still in the works, Louwers said there are some certainties when it comes to
this year’s schedule. Such as Kid’s Day, the annual Parade of Tropical Fools and of course, live entertainment. “We’ve got at least five or six new bands coming this year,”
Louwers said, including Jimmy and the Parrots from New Jersey — “one of the biggest buffet tribute bands.” See “cheeseburger” • 27

CASEVILLE — It’s time again to be a fool. The Parade of Tropical Fools — the main event of one of
Michigan’s biggest festivals, Cheeseburger in Caseville — is gearing up for its 17th year, with more than 120 floats to cruise a one-mile route starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19. “It’s really put us on the

map,” said Caseville Chamber of Commerce President Steve Louwers. With estimates of 55,000 people attending last year’s event, you’ll want to arrive early — but not too early. Louwers suggest parade watchers set up chairs the morning of the parade, but advises not to do so the day before. Streets are closed at 5 p.m. day of. The route starts at Caseville True Value Hardware, heading north to end near Caseville County Park. Louwers, in his 13th year helping to organize the 10-day festival, says those watching will see, as usual, parrots, pirates and flamingoes, with floats generally themed anything “pertaining to fun and enjoying life.” See “parade” • 31

As for the parade, they hope to add some new faces to the “fools.” “We aim to continue increasing the attendance of the Parade,” Louwers said. “Not just
from the standpoint of the people, but from the floats.” While there will be plenty of new aspects, there also will be plenty of returning attractions. The Laser Light Show will be
back for the first weekend as well as a military tribute. Something that should excite the tech savvy tourist is The Cheeseburger Fest Mobile App, which has a variety of functions. According to www.cheeseburgerincasevillefest.com, some things visitors will be able to access with the app include: • Events schedule

Cars of all ages and descriptions will line the street. Any car buff should hang around after the parade to take a trip through auto heaven. At the same time, things will continue jumping at Wilson Park. The 13th annual Idol Contest, which is open to all ages, will start at 1:30 p.m. And, as usual, a horseshoe contest will take place at the park. Mud volleyball is one of the biggest events to take place at Wilson. If last year’s event is any indication of this year’s contest, it will be maxed-out. Dozens of teams are expected to roll in the mud. They’ll vie for prizes and for bragging rights. “They start early morning and go until late afternoon,” Kerry Regentin said. And don’t think for a
moment that children will be left out. The park will be filled with things for them to do. The animal petting zoo will return, and it should prove to be another big hit. Perhaps the biggest drawing card will be the clown show. “There’s always a lot of kids for that,” Kerry Regentin said. Clowns will be perform magical tricks and create balloon art for the kids. They also will be on hand to paint faces with colorful artistic designs. And if these things aren’t enough, there will be a number of inflatables for the youngsters to enjoy. Saturday rounds out with entertainment at the park. Tribute bands, Nightmare and Wrecking Crue, will entertain in the style of Motley Crue and

Louwers said. “We came up with an idea 17 years ago when it started and it’s all about having fun. DECKERVILLE: Homecoming to feature music, parade, games and more Saturday will prove to be the busiest day of the homecoming. In years past, the Grand Parade has drawn huge crows along the shopping district of the town. This year should be no different. The Grand Parade’s theme this year is Honoring a Classy Cop with Classic Cop TV Shows. In essence, it will honor Deckerville’s retiring police chief, Tim Torp. Torp will be the grand marshal for this year’s parade. Pets, classic vehicles, floats, unusually-designed vehicles, and clowns are scheduled to walk the parade route. Prizes will be awarded for floats that are the funniest, most original and that best follow the theme. As soon as the parade is over, the annual car show will begin along the parade route.

PORT HOPE — Port Hope’s August festival is commonly known for its antiques, bean soup, and collectables — hence the name ABC Day. It could just as well be called ABC and F day as food is a major player in the day long festival. As usual, the event will take place on the third Saturday of August. This year that date is Aug. 15. Bean soup will be sold at the Port Hope Hotel. At press time, it also was expected to be sold on the street as a fundraiser. But soup is just the tip of the iceberg. Those coming to the event with an empty stomach will have no reason to leave that way. Popcorn and hot dogs will be available to visitors as they travel up and down the streets. Elephant ears as well as homemade donuts will permeate
the air. Some of the food will be sold for a nominal fee, but much will be given by area merchants to promote the village. The Chill Zone (ice cream shop) will be open for business with some of the best ice cream treats in Huron County. The Port Hope Chamber of Commerce has sent invitations to all of the usual vendors and performers, although they all have a standing invitation to return. Festival committee president Elaine Reinke said the Eastern Michigan Music Makers have been invited and are expected to perform. For years, they have attended the festival to the delight of those watching their performances. A fun attraction for children will be tours of the Port Hope Fire Station. “The fire station will be open and the kids can climb on the trucks,” Reinke said.

“It’ll be much like last year,” added Port Hope Fire Chief Gary Schave. He went on to say the firefighters will give different demonstrations. One of the most fascinating demos for children to watch is when the firefighters shoot large streams of water with their water cannons. This year, the annual Yard Sale Trail will take place the same weekend as the ABC Day. The trail starts in the Port Huron area and extends around the thumb along M-25. Merchants expect the village to be packed with visitors. Perhaps the most fun item for kids, parents and grandparents is to tour the town’s 19th Century jail house. Reinke said there were fewer people visiting the jail than usual last year due to the rain. Organizers are hoping for better weather this year, so folks can check out this unique experience. “It’s neat,” Reinke said. “It’s a favorite of parents and grandparents to photograph the kids.” As with many things in Port Hope that weekend, the jail tour is free. Free admission even extends to wagon rides around town. “There will be wagon rides around town,” Reinke said. “(Of course) ... it’s all free.”

Parisville Catholic church festival planned for Aug. 16 By Rich Harp For the Tribune
PARISVILLE — With the merger of churches and parishes, the Parisville Catholic church festival has had a couple name changes over the past couple years. Although the name of the festival may be different this year, the fun remains the same. The Saint Isidore Parish Summer Festival will take place on Sunday, Aug. 16. As usual, it will be held on the grounds of the St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. Fun starts at noon and runs until 9:30 p.m. Rain or shine, the festival will continue. Patrons will be protected from any less-than-favorable elements by a large, circus-type tent, smaller tents, a pavilion and the former school. The festivities kick off
with a Polka Mass at 11 a.m. Immediately after the mass, the annual chicken and ham buffet dinner will take place in the former school, and it will continue until 5 p.m. For decades the dinner has been famous around the county. Take-outs are available. Much of the meal will have a Polish style flare. “(It is) the oldest Polish settlement in the U.S.A. where so much history is present,” said Kitchen Supervisor Patricia Vogel. Vogel gives credit for its success to longtime cooks, Beatrice Kubacki and Gloria Smalley. Combined, the trio has been cooking the annual dinners for nearly 100 years. With that type of experience in the kitchen, one would expect nothing but the best. Although the dinner is a major drawing card, it is far

from being the only event of the day. The dance tent (pavilion) will hold a bevy of activity from 1 until 9:30 p.m. Jolly Zuk will make its debut that afternoon and will play intermittently with The Diddle Styx. Diddle Styx premiered their talent last year,
and they were such a hit they were invited back for the second time. As usual, black jack and bingo will draw large crowds, and adult beverages will be on hand. For those liking team competitions, a horseshoe tournament will take place on the grounds. In addition, there will be a novelty shop, sweet shop, and concession stands. A flea market and farmer’s market will also be available under the giant circus tent. Last year, thousands of items were offered at this venue. If a person is prone to browsing, they may be under the tent for hours. According to Vogel, one of the most popular events during the afternoon involves a large, four legged animal. “The donkey drop is a great hit,” she said. In actuality, Manure Bingo
may be a more descriptive term for the event. For those unfamiliar with the donkey drop, it involves a small corral with numbered, bingo-like squares created on the ground. A donkey is led into the corral and left unattended. Wagers are placed as to which squares will be filled by the donkey. Wherever the creature relieves itself determines the winner. BINGO! While adults are enjoying themselves with a plethora of activities, kids can enjoy their own. A barrel train will be available to give rides to the children. They can also enjoy an assortment of inflatables. A multitude of games are available for the kids. Bean bag toss, darts, ring toss and other games can be played for a very nominal fee. For more information, call 989-712-0049.

PARADE: Calling on all tropical fools to come to Caseville for annual parade on Aug. 19 From 26
“It’s 10 days of fun and everybody’s a kid,” he said. New for this year will be a performance from the Petoskey Steel Drum Band, a group of about 30 students who blend Caribbean steel drum music with contemporary tunes. They will perform not only the day of the parade, but in the parade, too, Louwers said. After the parade, New Jersey-based Jimmy & the Parrots will take the stage in the park.
Organizing the Thumb’s biggest draw is a task, to say the least. It’s not run by a committee, like many other festivals around the state. Instead, the Chamber of Commerce and volunteers handle plans and “nobody gets paid,” Louwers said. “It’s a lot of work,” he said. It’s also a challenge to keep the “fools” in line. Officials last year reported 16 misdemeanors were issued during the 10-day event, with
charges ranging from disorderly conduct, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, assault and domestic dispute. That number was down, however, from the previous year and nearly halved compared to the 30 arrests made in 2012. During the last 10 years, Louwers says organizers have tried to maintain the festival’s family-oriented image, in part with the Chamber spending extra money for local enforcement — some 70 to 80 members of
the sheriff’s office are called in to patrol, from deputies to officers in the marine division and even border patrol. “By doing that, it helps keep down incidents that could happen,” he said. And what would a Thumb festival be without a tractor pull? Well, it’d be Cheeseburger in Caseville — their version is a tractor pulling a 20-foot cheeseburger. “They’re not tractors; they’re well built, themed floats,” Lou-
wers said. “That’s what makes our parade different from other parades in the Thumb.” Louwers said the parade is still growing after all the years, boosted in part by cash prizes for floats. “We take a lot of pride in the parade and the festival,” he said. Grand marshals will again be Johnny Burke and Blondie from 96.1 WHNN. Expect to leave with plenty of candy and beads.
