Blessing of the Fleet part of local Memorial Day events By Casey Johnson Tribune Staff Writer
UPPER THUMB — T he Blessing of the Fleet may be a centuries old tradition practiced around the world, but in the nautical town of Caseville, nothing could be
more relevant. The blessing doesn’t have to be administered in conjunction with Memorial Day, but assistant harbor master Frank Garner said the timing couldn’t be better. See memorial day • 4

PORT AUSTIN — One of the most successful farmer’s markets in the state begins its 10th season on Saturday, May 24. Over the years, the Port Austin Farmer’s Market has proven to be a popular place to shop and socialize. It has grown from about 45 vendors each week to hundreds on a typi-
cal summer Saturday — and even more on holiday weekends. “The season opens May 24, and goes until Oct. 18,” said Joyce Stanek, of the Port Austin Area Chamber of Commerce, who has been involved with the farmer’s market since its inception. “The posted hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. — I say posted hours, because some people come through as early as 8 a.m. in the morning.”

One of its biggest draws is that it is a farmer’s market — and more. In addition to the typical food and garden products that are expected at a farmer’s market, visitors are treated to a wide variety of arts, crafts and other handmade items. The success of the Port Austin Farmer’s Market comes from its extraordinary organization, both from the standpoint of helping vendors set up their tents to maintaining a courteous flow of foot traffic. Booth space is only $10, which makes it exceedingly attractive to vendors, and the variety of items available for purchase makes it a one-stop shopping experience for even the most discerning buyer. The market has more than 1,000 registered vendors — vendors must preregister and fill out an application in order to set up and sell their wares. The Port Austin Farmer’s Market has a variety of special days planned for 2014, including entertainment and something for the kids. “We have music on some weekends,” Stanek said. “The ones that are confirmed are May 24, when the Spring Street Boys are playing. They’ll also be there on Aug. 23 and Aug. 30. Our annual Kids’ Day is on June 21.” Kid’s Day is a fun-filled extravaganza. The Maplewood Farms Petting Zoo will be on hand, as well as the Port Austin Fire Department showing kids how their equipment works. “The Huron Medical Center has their safety bike helmet fitting,” Stanek said. “They give away bike

helmets. You have to bring your child to be fitted, and they can then take the helmet home.” There also will be face painting and animal balloons. “The Port Austin Stompers will be dancing and showing off their hula-hoop skills,” Stanek added. “There will also be inflatables, like slides and an obstacle course. There will be a free drawing — giving away bikes and baskets with toys. The prizes for the drawing are donated mostly by the Huron Medical Center — the Port Austin Community Players donate hulahoops, and some other prizes.” The farmer’s market attracts thousands of visitors on a typical summer Saturday — significantly more on holiday weekends. On
some Saturdays, for no charge, vendors and customers alike can have their blood pressure checked, and Knoblock Riding Stables periodically provides free horse-drawn wagon rides. There are picnic tables and benches available for people to sit down and eat their lunch, or simply relax and enjoy the market’s ambiance. There also are wheel chairs available, as a courtesy. The number of people who attend this well-organized event continues to increase year after year. It has proven to be beneficial for Port Austin and Huron County in general. “We do it like a dual thing with Memorial Day,” he said. The ceremony typically takes place at the beginning of boating season, which for many visitors and natives, will be Memorial Day weekend. “It’s one of the first events we do in Caseville around the harbor,” Garner said, and it’s no small event. In previous years the ceremony has drawn prominent community leaders such as State
Rep. Terry Brown, D-Pigeon. And Huron County Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson normally speaks “on the boaters’ behalf for a safe summer.” In honor of Memorial Day, the Caseville American Legion will arrive decked in full uniform to perform a ritual and fire their guns in salute to fallen veterans. The Caseville Public High School band will provide music as well. The duality of the event is fur-

UPPER THUMB — Area residents and visitors are looking for things to do this summer. Due to a prolonged, difficult winter, and a slow-in-coming spring, people are ready to get out and about. Many festivals and events are beckoning, including the Thumb Artists Studio Tour, which has become a destination for art lovers in Huron County, and beyond, for more than a decade. As in past years, the studio tour will take place on the third weekend in June. The Thumb Artists Studio Tour is different from other art shows. Instead of artists traveling to a predetermined location, setting up tents and displaying their work, they open their studios to visitors. In this way, art lovers and anyone else who chooses to do so, is invited to travel from studio to studio and see what each artist has been up to. Some locations feature a demonstration of how the artists creates their work. This year marks the eighth annual Thumb Artists Studio Tour. It has grown Caro over the years — there were only eight artists 415 Biebel Rd. the first year, and the tour went from (M-24 North) Port Austin to Caseville. The 989-673-8400 2014 edition boasts 16 artists at eight locations, and goes from a few miles Birch Runeast of Port Austin west along M-25 to 8461 Street just shy of BayMain Port. The route includes989-624-9356 artists at two galleries along the way — The Brew Moon,
Caro

in Caseville, and Mermaid’s Cove, in Port Austin. In addition, two artists will be featured at The Lodge at Oak Pointe, a beautiful Bed & Breakfast a few miles east of Caseville. The idea for a studio tour in Huron County was the brainchild of Laurie Conger of Port Austin, who is a pottery artist. She participated in a similar event in the Port Huron area and recognized the feasibility of such a tour in Huron County. What started with a few artists in the Caseville/Port Austin area now includes artists who come from Port Huron, Bay City, Cass City and Caro, as well as Harbor Beach, Port Austin, Caseville and Bay Port. While some artists are new to the tour, others have been in every Thumb Artists Studio Tour. “All our sites are along M-25,” said Laurie Conger, founder of the event. “It’s a beautiful drive, and you get to see the lake every now and then.” Even though the logistics of a studio tour differ from a traditional art show, the quality is the same. Visitors who take the tour will see a wide variety of artistic Bad Axe work, including pottery, wooden Beach bowls,1314 jewelry, Sand photography, glass work, recycled art, ceramic tiles, 989-269-9249 paintings, mosaics, garden art and more. Nature center packed with summer fun By Bill Diller For the Tribune
HURON COUNTY — The Huron County Nature Center is going to be a busy place this summer. It has offered a series of educational programs for more than a decade, and this year will be no exception. Nearly every weekend between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and beyond, will find the nature center crawling with wildlife of all sorts — along with people on hand to see nature-related programs intended to educate and entertain. Located at 3336 Loosemore Road — a quarter mile south of M-25, and then a quarter mile east of Oak Beach Road, midway between Port Austin and Caseville — the Huron County Nature Center kicks off its season on Memorial Weekend with the Lady’s Slipper Festival. There will be food, fun and entertainment throughout the festival, as well as arts and crafts, and food vendors. See nature center • 9

From 8 In recent years, birdhouse building has become a popular attraction at the festival. Children are assisted by volunteers in building their own birdhouse, which they can then take home. All that’s asked is that the child bring a food item for a local food pantry. There are a limited number of kits available, so come early. During the festival, which goes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 24, and from noon to 5 p.m. May 25, you can walk the trails and visit the nature center gift shop, which will be open throughout the festival/the remainder of the summer, and the gift shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from noon until 3 p.m. Sunday.
On subsequent Saturdays in June, nature center visitors can learn how honey is made from local beekeeper, Ted Falkenburg; receive gardening tips from Josh Roggenbuck of The Flower Farm in Bad Axe; and get up close and personal with a farm animal petting zoo. July educational programs begin with what has proven to be one of the most popular programs at the nature center: Joe Rogers returns with his Birds of Prey, which features owls, hawks, eagles and more. The following weekends feature programs by Kevin Roggenbuck, on Native American artifacts, and Michigan Snakes Alive, presented by Jim and Carol McGrath. On the final week-

Last year, a total of 140 runners participated in the event, which was comprised of 35 adults, 25 children and 20 four-person teams. “I think it went well,” said Terry Atwell, HMC director of marketing, of last year’s race. “We received some good feedback from the participants, so we’re going to be making some changes this year.” See Iron Hatchet • 11

Without getting too specific, Atwell gave a few hints as to what runners could expect, including adding a few more obstacles, but spacing them out better to add more run time between them. The biggest change this year, however, will be the path of the course. Previously, the course had been entirely inside the Huron County Fairgrounds, but this year it will branch out to include a portion of city property. Atwell pointed out that the race will still begin and end in the fairgrounds though. “It’s going to be new and improved this year,” Atwell said. “You’re going to get wet and muddy, and it’s a lot of fun.” The Iron Hatchet offers hills, water, tires, slides, walls and mud as challenges to participants throughout the course. Atwell said while it may sound grueling — and it can be — the race is really for everyone. “It’s for anybody, from the beginner to the advanced,” she said. “It is a timed run, but some people just participate to have fun. It’s really geared for anyone. Anyone who wants to come out and have a good time, try some-

PORT AUSTIN — Several artists and groups boast a series of events that bring culture to the Thumb area. Some strive to make their work available by renting space at art and craft shows. Others prefer to have a more permanent way to offer their creations to the public. That’s where Mermaid’s Cove comes in. Entering its second year, the art store, located at 8637 Lake St., in downtown Port Austin, had a successful year in 2013. Five artists — potters Laurie Conger of Port Austin and Deb Maxwell of Kimball, and wood turner Dave Thuemmel, jew-

eler Lynne Wiencek, and ceramic artist Donna McCatty, all of Port Austin — collaborated to make the store an attraction for visitors and residents alike. This year, they have been joined by nature photographer Bill Diller of Caseville, to offer a wide variety of artistic works that are sure to please. All six are members of the Thumb Arts Guild and take part in the Thumb Artists Studio Tour.
Mermaid’s Cove also will carry the work of local and regional artists. Cheeseburger in Caseville. The historical society’s traditional kickoff to summer takes place on Sunday, May 25, from 1 to 3 p.m., when hundreds of people will flock to the museum for an old fashioned Ice Cream Social. This year marks the ninth year for the Historical Society of Caseville’s Ice Cream Social. It has become a must-attend for residents and visitors alike over the Memorial Weekend. “It’s a fund raiser, but we also look at it as a social event for the community,” said Harold Hoelzle, president of the Historical Society of Caseville. “We have people come back year after year after year.” The event is called a social for a good reason — it is an opportunity to visit with neighbors and friends while enjoying a scrumptious ice cream sundae. “We have a whole variety of toppings that are typical for a sun-
dae,” Hoelzle said. “Toppings include strawberries, chocolate sauce, peanuts, sprinkles and whipped cream, all topped by a cherry.” Hundreds of people typically attend the Ice Cream Social. “We plan for 300 each year,” Hoelzle said. “We’re usually short of that, but a couple of years, we’ve come close.” According to their records, they served 179 ice cream sundaes in 2013. “We get a lot of new people each year,” Hoelzle said. “We also get people who set that day aside for the family.” The ice cream social also serves as an opportunity for the Historical Society of Caseville to show off its museum. Most of the people who come for a sundae take the time to browse the displays, making comments and envisioning life in the olden days. Each year, members of the historical society set aside a por-
tion of the museum as a special period display. This year, a corner of the museum has become an early 1900s parlor, complete with furniture and other items relevant to that time period. The museum is sure to hold something of interest for everyone from age 8 to 80, and beyond. Be sure and set aside the time to see what the Historical Society of Caseville has accomplished in their renovation of the former Maccabee Hall — along with enjoying a sundae and visiting with fellow ice cream lovers. Tickets are available at the door for the Ice Cream Social. The cost is $4 for adults and $2 for children ages 12 and under. Proceeds will benefit the Historical Society of Caseville. For more information about the Historical Society of Caseville, its museum or events, visit www. thehchs.org/Caseville, or call 989856-9090.

The artwork offered in Mermaid’s Cove has a certain panache that can’t be mass produced. Sandy Kinney, Laurie Conger, Claire Logan, Mia Smith, Patty Finan, Donna McCatty, Judy Marion, Donna Rupersburg, Deb Maxwell and Millie Kuszymski, among others, will have their work on display. The Thumb Arts Guild is a non-profit organization that was established in June 2001. Over the years, their membership has grown to include artists and art lovers from throughout the state. TAG’s mission is: “The enrichment of life through active promotion and encouragement of art making and the appreciation of all phases of the arts. As Guild members who believe the arts to be essential to a complete life, we will work to incorporate the arts into the public experience and develop artistic self-realization through opportunities for growth.” In order to meet the provisions of their mission statement, the Thumb Arts Guild sponsors a variety of events throughout the year. The Spring Show and Exhibit is their first event of the season. The Guild’s largest event, Art in the Park, takes place at Gallup Park, in Port Austin, on Labor Day Weekend. The night before Art in the Park, TAG throws a Preview Party where the public can meet the artists for the upcoming art show, and take part in a silent auction consisting of artwork donated by participating artists.
The Thumb Arts Guild also has a show early in December called Silver Bells, which takes place this year on Dec. 6, at the Port Austin Civic Center. TAG is involved in many artistic projects in the Thumb, including its snowmen artwork that appears on Port Austin streets during the winter months. The Thumb Arts Guild also has an annual fundraiser, where participating artists decorate a one-of-a-kind, handmade item that traditionally is displayed at various businesses and events throughout the summer. Interested parties can bid on the items, with winners announced at Art in the Park. This year’s item is handmade, decorated tote bags, some of which will be displayed at the Spring Show. The Spring Show and Exhibit will offer visitors a chance to see firsthand the quality of work local artists are capable of producing. Light refreshments will be served, and TAG members will be on hand to answer questions about the Guild, and the work that is on display. Be sure and stop by the old school gym in Port Austin on Memorial Weekend and enjoy a traditional TAG kickoff to the summer season. Tour di Lago, set for June 21, to feature new after-party By Chris Aldridge Tribune Staff Writer
UPPER THUMB — Bicycle riders can see lighthouses, historic sites, wind farms and other Huron County trademarks in the seventh annual Tour di Lago bicycle ride June 21. But this year, organizers have planned new additions for an “after-party” segment once riders are on their feet again, including a beer tent with food, corn hole tournament and a performance from local rock band Big Empty Sky. The Tour di Lago — Tour of the Lakes — starts at Port Austin Kayak & Bike, 119 E. Spring St., Saturday, June 21. Riders can cycle along paved, low-traffic rural roads making stops in Caseville, Harbor Beach, Pigeon, Kinde and Grindstone City in 12.5-mile, 25-mile and 62-mile courses, or trek an ambitious 100-mile course. Tickets are $30 if purchased the day of the event and $25 in advance, and they can be ordered at www.eventbrite.com. A group start begins at 8 a.m. and the event will be held rain or shine. More information can be found at Tour di Lago’s Facebook page. Jane Loegel, event director, hopes to again see the nearly

170 riders that cycled the course last year. “We’ve found most people who come to it are serious riders who do races elsewhere but like rides in between for practice,” said Loegel. Still, it offers a “nice tour around the Thumb” and is “pretty much for everyone,” Loegel said. Holding the event on Saturday, rather than on a Sunday in years past, is a new approach geared toward boosting tourism and getting people to stay in the area for the weekend, she said. “There are a lot of vacationers up here, but we could always use
more,” she said. Costs to participate are up from last year’s rates — a reflection of the new additions planned this year. Hungry riders can replenish under the planned beer tent with food and brew and stay to enjoy a performance from Big Empty Sky, a local rock band performing covers of songs written by the Beatles and Weezer, among others. “Riders last year said it was cheap, so we thought, ‘How can we make a little more money and keep the quality?’ ” Loegel told the Tribune. Loegel said it has since turned into a for-profit endeavor, and a portion of money raised is donated to local historical societies and the League of Michigan Bicyclists. Tour di Lago is sponsored by Port Austin Kayak & Bike Rental, which will be offering discounted kayak and paddle board rates for participants. The Tour di Lago coincides with Festivale Italiano, scheduled for the weekend of June 20-22. The event features Italian deserts, music and other events in Port Austin. As I see it: Huron County harbors are looking good According to many business people I talked to, last year’s summer season was good. After cutting vacation time the past few years, visitors to Huron County increased. We saw a lot of familiar faces, but also met a number of new
people. I spoke with many people who were pleased to find a new destination, so close to the metropolitan areas. Campgrounds were busy all around the county ,and motels and cabins had increased attendance. A big disappointment for

those wishing to travel to Huron County last year however was the lack of adequate marina facilities. A combination of extremely low water conditions, harbors undergoing upgrades and lack of funding capt. fred kept many boatdavis ers dockside. Those from ports downstate cruised past our area to visit distant marinas further north. The extreme shallow water problems that plagued most harbors in the state had become critical for Huron County. Financial assistance was sought at state and federal levels for all of the harbors. The harbor at Grindstone was so shallow only very small vessels were able to use it. The large charter fleet that had docked in the harbor for years were scattered, most of the docks were not even put in. Harbor Beach’s marina had limited dockage for larger vessels so they launched an effort to dredge their harbor area. They obtained funding from various sources and purchased their own equipment. They worked all last summer and are completing some minor final clean up this spring. I called and talked to Jeff Richardson, a harbor master at the marina. He told me they are up and running. They hosted a fishing tournament with over 50 boats, and all went well. They also were able

Port Austin’s harbor had been closed a good portion of the past three boating seasons. Last summer, floating docks were accessible on one side of the marina but it appeared boaters did not get the word that they were available. The last phase of Port Austin’s waterfront renovation pushed ahead last fall and lasted well into the winter season. This late spring, the interior harbor is being dredged where

the west docks were removed. When dredging is completed, the anchors are set and ready to install the west set of floating docks. The ramps are expected to be open for Memorial Day weekend and the east dock is in service. It is anticipated final completion of the multimillion dollar project will be in late June. Extensive dredging also lasted well into the winter in the river at Caseville’s harbor. See harbors • 21

From 20 It extended from outside the breakwall, continued around the municipal dockage area and toward the bridge. I talked with one of the dredge operators while the work was being done and he said they worked seven days a week hoping to complete before winter set in. Frank Garner and Bernie Cobb, who will take over the harbor masters job, met with the U.S. Coast Guard team who set the buoys in the harbor entry channel. They sounded eight to nine foot depths all the way to the end of the breakwall. Garner said the depth at the ramp is up to seven foot and everyone is welcome to the Blessing of the Fleet on Memorial Day. Late in the fall last year, I spoke with Sebewaing’s harbor master about that harbors condition. The harbor master said his board had been promised dredge operations would begin when fish spawning ceased in the
spring. He said they have been told the water depth after dredging should average six feet below low water datum and funding has been set aside for the work. Although there were discussions regarding the needs of Bay Port and Grindstone harbors, I’ve heard no final decisions regarding those areas. Huron County received a lot of federal funding assistance for the dredging needs. Our harbor area businesses owe a debt of gratitude to its elected

CASEVILLE — A growing trend in communities large and small is to set aside a parcel of land for a farmer’s market, where people can purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and other farm products locally from the people who
produce that product. In many cases, a traditional farmer’s market has expanded to include handmade and homemade crafts. Farmer’s Markets have sprung up in a number of Huron County communities, including Caseville, where a farmer’s market began last year. The 2014 edition of the Caseville Farmer’s Market began

This should help avoid the red tape involved when emergency funds are needed. Stabenow has been a consistent advocate for our area and was instrumental in Port Austin’s harbor project. U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Michigan, also has responded to our needs on many occasions. Huron County ports were once among the most popular in the state. Boaters who return this season will find them in top notch condition. I suggest area chambers of commerce acknowledge and applaud harbor improvements in their promotions this year. Capt. Fred Davis is a retired charter captain and nationally published author of boating articles. “As I See It” columns appear Saturday in the Huron Daily Tribune and his Boat Smart articles are published online at www. captainfredsboattips.com.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. that Saturday and from noon until 5 p.m. that Sunday, the woods surrounding the nature center will be filled with the sights, sounds, and smells of nature. In addition, you’ll be treated to the sight of a wide variety of arts and crafts, the sounds of music and people enjoying themselves, and the smells of hot dogs and brats wafting through the air. This year’s Lady’s Slipper Festival boasts more than a dozen vendors selling everything from baked goods, peanut brittle and oatmeal, to fine art paintings, nature photography and numerous crafts, including wearable art, jewelry, pottery, wooden crafts and much more. Informational booths, such as the Tuscola County Conservation District, will be on hand to answer questions and provide help regarding nature-related subjects. The Lady’s Slipper Festival traditionally attracts nature-lovers and others who enjoy walking the groomed trails, listening to the entertainment, and shopping for various arts and crafts, and in the nature center gift shop, which will
be open throughout the festival. Nature center members will be on hand to assist youngsters as they build their own birdhouse, which they are free to take home — bird house builders are asked to bring a canned food item, which will be donated to a local food bank. There are a limited number of bird house kits, available on a first-come, first-build basis. Be sure to get there early, as the bird houses tend to go quickly. Entertainment for the Lady’s Slipper Festival will be supplied throughout the day on Saturday by Susan and Raymond Bugg of Harbor Beach, who perform under the name, Everything Under the Son. They are strolling minstrels who include bystanders in their sing-along and dance-along routines. The Eastern Michigan Music Makers, an old-time country and Gospel group, will perform in the Gazebo from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday. We Treat You Like Family

“We changed because that’s what the consumers wanted,” said Misty Wettergren, manager of the Caseville Farmer’s Market. “So far, it seems like people are excited to have the market on Saturdays.” The Caseville Farmer’s Market specializes in homemade and handmade products: No buy-sell, kits, or flee market type items are allowed. Typical products available at the Caseville Farmer’s Market include fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers and plants, as well as fresh baked goods that comply with the Michigan Cottage Law (http://www.michigan.gov/mdard/0,1607,7-12550772_45851-240577--,00.html). Visitors also will be able to buy
merchandise that has been handcrafted by local artisans. The mixture of food and craft items at a farmer’s market seems to be popular, because consumers are able to make it a one-stop shopping trip. They can pick up scrumptious edibles for the table, then walk to a nearby booth and purchase a birthday or anniversary gift for that special someone, or simply something they like. The Caseville Farmer’s Market is looking for vendors for the weekly market. There is no charge to set up a booth, and the only stipulation is that your product must be homemade or handmade. If you’re interested in becoming a vendor, or for more information, call Misty Wettergren at 989-553-4700.

50th Michigan Sugar Festival to be sweeter than ever By Casey Johnson Tribune Staff Writer
BAD AXE — Half a century ago, no one knew the idea to recognize the sugar beet industry with a celebration would forever change summer in the Thumb. This year, the Michigan Sugar Festival will celebrate its 50th year with an array of new festivities, some quite wild. But many of the old traditions will not be forgotten. The biggest change this year will be the daily ride wristbands
available for purchase. Wristband coupons can be purchased in advance for $15, or the actual bands can be purchased during the festival for $18. If purchased in advance the coupon is taken to a booth on the midway for wrist band redemption, and carnival personnel will attach the bracelet. Red sheet tickets will be available during the festival only. And the celebration will kickoff not with a bang, but a roar. See sugar fest • 30

Port Austin History Center hosts strawberry social June 28 By Bill Diller
Judges at last year’s Strawberry Social enjoyed a variety of desert treats created by area residents. This year’s event is scheduled to take place from 2 to 5 p.m. June 28 at the Port Austin Area Historical Society’s History Center.

P O RT A U S T I N — T h e History Center, home to the Port Austin Area Historical Society, will open its doors for the second straight year to visitors for a Strawberry Social, an afternoon of food, fun, and entertainment. Last year’s Strawberry Social was a hit, with more than 100 visitors attending. The event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. June 28. There will be a silent auction throughout the afternoon, whereby visitors can bid on a number of baskets containing a variety of theme-related prizes. These include Cat Lover’s, Dog Lover’s, Beach/Picnic and Winter baskets. “I anticipate having three or four additional items for the auction, but have not received them yet,” said Charlotte Stearns, chairperson for this year’s Strawberry Social. “All the items have been donated by members and friends of the Port Austin Area Historical Society. The auction items will be set up outside, so guests can view them, and place their bids.” Of course, the main attraction at the Strawberry Social will be the food. Scrumptious treats will abound. “Strawberry shortcake and strawberries and ice cream will be served outside, weather permitting,” Stearns said. “A chocolate fountain, with fresh fruit, pretzels, and marshmallows for

They are expecting an even larger crowd this year. The Strawberry Social will help raise funds for the histori-
cal society, so they can continue to improve the History Center, which is located at 1424 Pte. aux Barques Road. The History Center is a dream come true for area residents interested in the preservation of artifacts relating to the region’s past. The members of the historical society continue to add items that are sure to pique the interest of history lovers throughout the Thumb. “The History Center is funded entirely by donations,” Stearns said. “This event is one of several held during the year to raise

sponsors, I wouldn’t be surprised if we hit the 2,000 mark for passes alone,” said Louwers. “Just because of the quality of entertainment that we have.” Highlighting this year ’s entertainment at the Caseville County Park amphitheater is the recently-signed artist David Shelby at 9 p.m. that Friday night, while the main act for Saturday will be Brian Lorrente and the Usual Suspects, also at 9 p.m. Also playing will be Mandi Layne and the Lost Highway at 7 p.m. Friday, 25 Cent Beer Band beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday and Longneck Stranglerat 7 p.m. Saturday. Louwers said for the rib cook-off competition, a total of eight restaurants will be participating for the honor to be named the winner of the People’s Choice and Judge’s Choice award. Last year, Blue Water Inn was the people’s champion, while BK BBQ won from a vote of celebrity judges. Three new entrants into this year ’s competition include Shooters of Pigeon, Pasta House of Kinde and Lefty’s of Caseville. Louwers said Blue Water Inn would not be participating this year, so a new winner is sure to be crowned by the people. However, fans of the Blue Water ribs still will be able to get a taste on Sunday as part of a fireworks fundraiser event organizers have planned. According to Louwers, close

The cook-off competition begins at noon that Saturday and the fun doesn’t stop until that Sunday afternoon. Also highlighting the fes-
tival will be an assortment of children’s activities, including performance entertainment, a sand castle building contest and various games throughout the weekend. Once again, organizers are confident the weekend will not disappoint. “I think it’s a combination of both,” Louwers said of what attracts people to RibStock. “There’s not many places you can go to listen to great country music, but I think better than that is the fact that people love ribs too.”

Safety will make you a happy camper (MS) — Ah, nature. Besides the mosquitoes, nothing says summer like a getaway to the great outdoors. As you wind down from the stress of packing up and driving to the cottage or campsite, the CSA Group, a leader in testing and certification, wants to remind you to stay safe on land and water this summer with these tips.
Boats and cottages • Always wear a personal flotation device and never consume alcohol while operating any vehicle. • Make sure that certified carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke alarms are properly installed outside all sleeping areas. • When opening your cottage for the season, carefully inspect all appliances and electrical cords for damage from rodents or insects. • Ensure boats and cottages are equipped with proper emergency safety equipment, including first aid kits and fire extinguishers.
CO and smoke alarms • Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. To prevent CO poisoning, fuel-burning equipment should only be used in well-ventilated areas.
• Test each unit at least once a month because the threat doesn’t take a vacation. • Change the batteries at least twice a year. A good routine is to change them at the same time you reset your clocks for Daylight Saving Time. • Be sure to use the correct type of batteries. • Follow the manufacturer’s detailed operating instructions.
Camping stoves and lanterns • Fuel-burning equipment such as stoves, lanterns and cookers should only be lit outdoors and at least nine feet from tents, combustible materials and vehicles. • Before use, carefully inspect parts for leaks, blockages or damage. • Keep flammable clothing (and eyebrows) away from open flames, and carefully monitor children and pets around fuel burning devices. • Before packing up equipment, make sure it is completely turned off and cool to the touch. Have a great and safe summer — and don’t forget the bug spray and sunscreen. For more information on CSA Group visit www.csagroup.org.
