CHALLENGE CUP U18 VAFA v U18 NZ Hawks

AFL INTERNATIONAL YOUTH GIRLS CUP

Australian Breeze v U18 NZ Kahus

AFL New Zealand As each year passes, new opportunities are continually presented through AFL. New Zealanders are developing an affinity with the sport that originates in Australia but is now more than just Australia’s game. Sommet Sports is a new broadcaster that now provides New Zealand with coverage of six live AFL games per week, all free to air, thus providing us with the best AFL coverage in the world. April 2013 was an historic occasion when the first AFL fixture in 140 years was played outside of Australia in Wellington. This has inspired participation numbers to grow with 30,000 New Zealanders now playing AFL each year. AFL New Zealand welcomes the New Zealand Kahus and the Australian Breeze as they compete in the first ever trans tasman international female clash. Over 10,000 girls aged between 5 and 12 participate in AFL Junior development programmes each year and with the foresight of AFL Female Development Manager Jan Cooper and the visiting Australian Breeze team, New Zealand’s youth girls now have something to aspire to. The Kahus is made up of a team of girls aged under 18 that should be considered pioneers of the codes development within New Zealand.

The Kahus is the first step in the female High Performance pathway that will lead to a team that represents New Zealand at the 2014 International Cup in Melbourne next year. The Victorian Amateur Football Association will participate in its fifth tour of New Zealand, returning to Auckland for the third time. The support provided by CEO Michael Sholley, General Manager Tim Noonan and the VAFA Board has been immense. The visit by the VAFA provides a significant opportunity to assist in the development of young athletes within New Zealand as they look to find their way in a new and dynamic sport. AFL New Zealand’s association with the VAFA continues to grow with 8 current New Zealand Hawks players currently playing for a variety of VAFA clubs. We look forward to the day when Australian players cross the ditch to be involved with our domestic summer competitions. Let’s enjoy another great weekend of football and welcome all involved to Aotearoa. Robert Vanstam, CEO AFLNZ

VAFA The Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) is one of Australia’s oldest and largest senior football competitions. Originating in 1892, the Association has grown to now involve 250 teams, 74 clubs and over 12,500 registered players. The Association, which covers Metropolitan Melbourne, contains 26 Sections including 7 senior and reserve grade sections, 5 U19 sections, 3 Club XVIII sections and the U18 section. The Association has a long and proud history of representative football commencing in 1925. Over the years, the VAFA has competed against the VFL, VFA, VCFL and state bodies from around Australia. This series against AFL New Zealand represents the ďŹ fth time a VAFA representative side has met an international team and continues the tradition that began in 2009. The VAFA see this tour as an enormous opportunity to not only reward some of the key contributors to the under 18 competition, but also to communicate to the football community the potential opportunities that are presented through participation in the VAFA. On behalf of VAFA President Mr Michael Hazell and CEO Mr Michael Sholly, the VAFA would like to thank Robert Vanstam and the Board of AFL New Zealand for their efforts in accommodating us and we look forward to some exciting football over the weekend. Tim Noonan, VAFA General Manager

A message from the Breeze This New Zealand tour is an historic occasion for the AFL. It is the ďŹ rst time that a female AFL team has conducted a tour internationally.

We hope that this will be the beginning of a close and rich partnership with AFL New Zealand that will not only help grow the player pathway in both countries but will be the start of a fantastic Trans Tasman rivalry for our most talented footballers. The AFL conducts a High Performance Academy for Australia’s best 16s female players. From this intensive live in program the Academy selected the twelve

most outstanding players and people to represent Australia. All the girls have represented their State at either Schoolgirls, Youth Girls or Kickstart Nationals. Breeze coaching staff are highly experienced with all personnel currently coaching both genders at second tier male or representative female level. Dana Pimley is the Head Trainer at AFL Club Fremantle. Dania Herdman won a National

image competition and part of her prize was to capture this historic Tour in still and video images. The Tour party and AFL congratulate AFL New Zealand on this great initiative and thanks them for all the work they have put into bringing the tour together. Robert Vanstam and Mick Coultard in particular have provided a program that ensures the touring group

plays some great games against the Kahus, shares social time with the other touring teams as well as getting a taste for some iconic NZ tourist sites. Good luck to all teams involved in the challenge. Enjoy your football and let’s make this the start of a special football partnership between the Kahus and Breeze.
