AFL FLYING BOOMERANGS U16 NEW ZEALAND HAWKS

AFLNZ U16 NEW ZEALAND HAWKS AFL New Zealand warmly welcomes the AFL Flying Boomerangs to our shores. We in New Zealand understand the importance of being able to represent your heritage and culture. Playing for the New Zealand Hawks is the highest honour in AFL in Aotearoa. It is our privilege to host young men who are representing their indigenous people and cultures. Our mission is to make AFL a New Zealand game, and tours like this are hugely important. AFL has enjoyed a year to remember across 2013, with development and growth at every level of the game. The AFL New Zealand High Performance pathway offers a chance for athletes to excel through AFL. The Under 16 New Zealand Hawks are top quality young athletes, and through the High Performance programme they will continue to develop as athletes and as people. A new dawn for the game in New Zealand has arrived in the form of the deal signed by the St Kilda Football Club, which will bring an AFL competition match to Wellington each year for the next five years. After a successful debut in April, all the signs point to next year being even bigger and better, and creating thousands of new AFL fans in the process. More history has been made this year, with the U-18 New Zealand Kahus becoming the first female AFL representatives from this country. AFL New Zealand will look to field an open age female team for the first time at the International Cup in 2014. Through AFL KiwiKick at

Primary Schools and AFL Secondary School programmes, we have introduced tens of thousands of young Kiwis to the dynamic sport of AFL. Members of the AFL Flying Boomerangs saw our work when they visited an Auckland primary school. The AFL is also covered in New Zealand by Sommet Sports, who broadcast on the Freeview network. With six live games

and three delayed games every weekend, fans of the code in New Zealand have access to fantastic coverage. AFL New Zealand wishes both teams the best of luck. We hope you will display the culture and values held dear by all AFL fans in New Zealand. Play hard, play to win and play with respect for your opponents, coaches, umpires and supporters.

AFL FLYING BOOMERANGS

The Flying Boomerangs is a personal development and leadership program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young men aged 14 – 15 years old. Selected from the 2013 AFL KickStart Under-15 Championships, the Flying Boomerangs squad of 24 players will play two matches against the New Zealand Hawks in Wellington at Hutt Park, coached by Eugene Warrior. The Boomerangs will be accompanied by AFL Indigenous programs mentor and former Melbourne Demons star Aaron Davey on tour. AFL Head of Diversity and International Jason Mifsud said this is a great opportunity for these talented young men to develop on and off the field. “The Flying Boomerangs squad is made up of the best rising Indigenous talent in the nation and they will be given the chance to represent their country and showcase Australia’s game in New Zealand when they play two exhibition matches against local teams. “Throughout the tour the players will be exposed to elite training, as well as many cultural experiences which will be focussed on addressing the
