New Zealand hawks v australia AIS/AFL Academy
www.aflnz.co.nz
A message from AFL New Zealand 12 months ago the match played between the AIS/AFL Academy and New Zealand Hawks at Wellington Stadium initiated the first ever contest between Australian and New Zealand representative teams in the sport of AFL. The victory to the Australian team was not the desired result for AFL New Zealand but the match had a far more important role to play than just the scoreboard. It was the catalyst in securing the first ever AFL fixture to be played outside of Australia in over one hundred years of AFL competition. ANZAC Day 2013 will see the St Kilda Football Club compete against the reigning Premiers the Sydney Swans at the same venue, Wellington Stadium. In the week leading up to the Australia, New Zealand fixture on January 26th 2013 at 12.00 noon we will also host our first National Combine involving 40 of our brightest young stars as well as the St Kilda Football Club Community Camp, also in Wellington. The recent signing of New Zealand youngsters Kurt Heatherley and Shem Tatupu by the Hawthorn Football Club showcases a great pathway for aspiring New Zealand players and the AFL competition now boasts 22 players, currently playing, who are eligible to represent New Zealand. So who knows what the future holds. The current New Zealand Hawks team does not include any current AFL stars but a hard working group that dares to dream. Veteran Wayne Schwass with over 200 AFL games to his credit will realise a life time ambition when he represents New Zealand, his country of birth, for the very first time. The value of International representation cannot be understated and that is what this weekends game is all about.

The St Kilda Football Club is delighted to announce a partnership with Wellington City Council in New Zealand, which will see the Saints become the first AFL club to play for AFL Premiership points outside of Australia. In a history making agreement between St Kilda FC, the AFL and Wellington City Council, the Saints will play at Westpac Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand on ANZAC Day in 2013. This agreement will see an annual AFL Premiership game played on ANZAC Day at Wellington’s world-class Westpac Stadium. The AFL has confirmed St Kilda’s opponent for ANZAC Day 2013 will be the Sydney Swans. The intent for the St Kilda FC, the AFL and Wellington City Council is for this to be a long term commitment, with an initial term of the agreement set for three years on the basis it satisfies all parties’ objectives after the first year. By commemorating ANZAC Day and the shared history around this day for our two countries, we will again strengthen the bonds between New Zealand and Australia, and further expand the growth of AFL in New Zealand.
A message from the AIS/AFL Academy To represent your country is the highest level one can achieve in sport. On behalf of the AFL, congratulations to all players chosen to represent Australia and the AFL in our next frontier tour to New Zealand. This is a wonderful opportunity for Australian Football to display its talented youth in the international arena against a region that is growing in both its development and the way in which it has taken to the AFL code, displaying great promise for the years ahead. New Zealand has a proud history in Australian Football and a number of players with New Zealand heritage have played in the AFL, including: Wayne Schwass (282 games North Melbourne & Sydney) and Trent Croad (222 games Hawthorn & Fremantle). New Zealand were 2005 AFL International Cup Champions and currently have over 20,000 participants playing Australian Football. 2013 is a historic year for international development, Wellington will play host to St Kilda v Sydney Swans on Anzac Day. This match will be the first ever played abroad for Premiership points. The AFL would like to thank the Australian Institute of Sport for its support of the AIS/AFL Academy program, which reaches its peak with this international tour. The AFL also would like to thank the NAB for its outstanding support of the entire “NAB AFL Rising Stars Program” which includes the AIS/AFL Academy. Best wishes to the players and staff, and we wish all supporters an enjoyable tour of New Zealand and know that you will be excellent ambassadors for your country and the AFL.
