O F F I C I A L P R O G R A M M E DECEMBER 7-8, 2013 WESTMINSTER PARK, CHRISTCHURCH
2013
NATIONAL PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP
A Message from AFL New Zealand AFL has enjoyed a year to remember across 2013, with development and growth at every level of the game. A new dawn for the game in New Zealand has arrived in the form of the deal signed by the St Kilda Football Club, which will bring an AFL competition match to Wellington each year for the next five years. After a successful debut in April, all the signs point to next year being even bigger and better, and creating thousands of new AFL fans in the process. More history has been made this year, with the U-18 New Zealand Kahus becoming the first female AFL representatives from this country. AFL New Zealand will look to field an open age female team for the first time at the International Cup in 2014. With that tournament approaching, the NPC is more important than ever this year. Players who make an impression here could be rewarded with selection to the New Zealand Hawks, the highest honour in AFL in New Zealand.
With young players coming through from the AFL New Zealand High Performance programme, and veterans from previous campaigns, the 2014 New Zealand Hawks are expected to be the strongest, most professional and skilled AFL team ever fielded by New Zealand. The team will not feature any current AFL stars, but may boast players who will go on to have careers with professional AFL clubs in the future. The four leagues represented at the NPC this year are a crucial component in the continual development of AFL in New Zealand. With the development of Play AFL Clubs, and with new High Performance athletes being scouted every year, AFL New Zealand will continue to funnel talented athletes into clubs around the country. With the Auckland AFL recently developing a two-division structure, it is clear that exciting growth is occurring. AFL New Zealand wishes all teams playing this weekend the best of luck. We hope you will display the culture and values held dear by all AFL fans in New Zealand. Play hard, play to win and play with respect for your opponents, coaches, umpires and supporters.
FIRST NAME
Auckland With the largest league in the country, the Auckland AFL will be a strong contender to take out the 2013 NPC. Eight teams, spread across two divisions, provide a depth to the Auckland NPC squad, with every place being hard won. Chris Mundell of the University Club, who also recently coached the Under 18 New Zealand Hawks, will coach the team. For a region with such high player numbers, NPC wins haven’t been easy to come by for Auckland in recent years. A golden run in the period between 2005-07 saw the team win three NPC titles in a row, however they haven’t managed to win any since. Key players from 2012, including Sam McKenzie and Michael Gregson will be returning, and with a team packed full of current or former New Zealand Hawks players, there is every chance that this team could capture the title.

Canterbury Hailing from a proud sporting region, the Canterbury Cobras are the current reigning champions of New Zealand in AFL. Since the earthquakes of 2010, Canterbury has won every NPC, including a memorable sweep of all teams in 2012. Harry Peterson will be coaching another strong squad at the 2013 NPC, one that could very likely take out a 4th consecutive trophy in home conditions. Their match against Wellington will be an eagerly anticipated contest, particularly after the two teams topped the NPC standings in 2012.

Otago The Otago Riot is the newest team in the NPC, with their debut in 2012. While the Blue and Golds may have struggled in that competition, Riot coach Warwick Kain has high hopes his players will all display the skills that got them picked for Otago this year. Their team is a blend of height, speed, experience and youth, and could be the surprise package of the 2013 NPC. From humble beginnings, the Otago AFL has grown to being an established competition, based at Logan Park. In the early days it was only a few University students who kicked a Sherrin around, now the league has a full field marked out, and new players turning up each week. An emphasis is still placed on coaching new players at Wednesday night matches, but with potential star players coming through and with plenty of match experience across the Otago squad, the standard will only improve.

Wellington Always a strong contender at the NPC, Wellington will be looking to avenge their narrow loss to Canterbury in 2012 and win the title. Their most recent title came in 2009. The team will be coached by Jason Wozniak, and includes a decent crop of New Zealand representatives. James Terry and Stanley Chung have both played at open age international level, Craig Morgan, Jalan Ferris and current St Kilda Saints international scholarship holder Joe Baker Thomas have represented the U-18 New Zealand Hawks. Four teams compete in the WAFL, with the 2013 competition final still to be played as of the NPC. The finalists for the 14th on December will be the Eastern Bulldogs, also coached by Wozniak, and the North City Demons, coached by Shannon Wall. This game will be played at Hutt Park alongside an international AFL fixture involving the U-16 New Zealand Hawks. 2013 has been a year of growth for AFL in Wellington, with a big increase in the number of children and teenagers participating in AFL New Zealand programmes. With annual ANZAC Day fixtures involving the St Kilda Saints to be played in the capital, the future is bright for the Wellington AFL.
