A Message from AFL New Zealand Kia Ora, Following on from the successful tour of New Zealand by the Port Adelaide Aboriginal Academy in November 2017, 2018 has been a good year for the sport of AFL in New Zealand, with the successes from recent years entrenched and strengthened. The sport has been boosted at every level by the continued AFL coverage broadcast on Duke Television and this contributes to a strong presence on Free to Air television in comparison to the traditional sports within New Zealand. The effect of this has been profoundly noticeable, with everyone involved in the delivery of AFL New Zealand programmes reporting the upswing of knowledge and interest in AFL. The annual 2018 ANZAC campaign saw four New Zealand teams travel to Wellington including the two male AFL New Zealand Academy teams, the U18 Kahu Youth girls and the Senior New Zealand side.
Soon after The U18 New Zealand team travelled to Melbourne in May to take on a representative team from the Mornington Peninsula as well as local school Hallam College, the breeding ground of talented New Zealand born St Kilda FC, AFL star, Shane Savage. This year we welcome the Port Adelaide Aboriginal Girls Academy team to New Zealand shores. The eight day tour culminates with their clash against the New Zealand Kahu team at QBE Stadium and after a week of engaging in the differences in culture, landscape and people, the tour is finalised by our common interest in AFL. AFL New Zealand wishes every team the best of luck, and we hope that you will play with the values held dear by AFL fans in New Zealand. Play fair, and play with respect for opponents, teammates, spectators and officials.
A Message from Port Adelaide The Women’s Aboriginal AFL Academy is an educational based football program targeted at female Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander High school Students completing Year 11 and 12 in Adelaide, South Australia. Students will complete a Certificate III in Fitness over the course of the school year, attending Academy program days every Thursday out of the Port Adelaide Football Clubs elite training facilities, The Alan Scott Headquarters. In addition to the football and education components of the program, there is also a big cultural aspect to add to the leadership and resilience workshops.
On completion of the program each year, graduating Year 12 students are rewarded with an overseas trip which intales a cultural immersion and exchange which sees the Women’s Aboriginal AFL Academy travel to New Zealand for the first time. The Women’s Aboriginal AFL Academy will tour New Zealand and learn about the people, the way of life and importantly understand the amazing Maori people and their Culture through local elders and traditional owners. We look forward to a great week of education and training, topped off by a great game against the New Zealand Kahu Youth Girls Team.
