Niue (pronounced “New-e (‘e’ as in ‘end’) – which means ‘behold the coconut’) may be the world’s smallest independent nation

THERE ARE MORE NIUEANS LIVING OUTSIDE OF NIUE Niue has a humble population of around 1,600 residents, while we have 22,200 Niueans living in New Zealand. This means that there are more people speaking Vagahau Niue overseas than in Niue.

VAGAHAU NIUE IS AN ENDANGERED LANGUAGE It’s estimated that only 7,000 people speak Niuean, therefore the Niuean language is classified as a “definitely endangered language” by UNESCO. You can find Niuean speakers in Niue, New Zealand, the Cook Islands and Tonga

SPECIAL POKEMON & STAR WARS CURRENCY... Niue has free association with New Zealand and uses NZ currency. However Niue has issued some of its’ own commemorative coins which were accepted as legal tender. These were 5 Pokemon coins and some star wars themed coins.

THE UGA—COCONUT CRAB Niue has a type of crab that can climb trees. It’s bright blue and called an “uga”. This is the same crab that the character Tamatoa from Moana was based on.

NIUE IS ONE OF THE LAST COUNTRIES TO SEE THE SUN SET Due to Niue’s position on the International Date Line, Niue is one of the last countries in the world to see the end of the day. In fact, because New Zealand and Niue are on opposite sides of the International Date Line, the Tuesday morning flight from Auckland arrives in Niue on Monday afternoon despite being a three-hour flight!

THE ROCK! The island is commonly referred to as “The Rock”, a reference to Niue being one of the biggest raised coral islands in the world. Niue is an elevated coral atoll with fringing coral reefs encircling steep limestone cliffs. It has a landmass of 259km and its highest point is about 60 metres above sea level
