There are about 300 dolphins and whales that get stranded each year in New Zealand - one of the highest stranding rates in the world. When this happens, who helps? In the late 1800s Masons Gardens in Taita were a popular leisure destination. Once known as “the finest garden in New Zealand” Masons Gardens boasted 1,400 listed species. Wellington historian Ben Schrader examines the early history of Naenae as a state housing suburb and identifies some of its heritage values that speak to us about the community’s history and sense of place in modern times.
