HUTT VALLEY AQUIFER Where does our drinking water come from? Dr Uwe Morgenstern The Hutt Valley aquifer supplies up to 70% of the entire region’s water demand. GNS Scientists have studied this body of water hidden in sediments beneath the ground to find out how much water can it hold, its age and where the water comes from. Dr Morgenstern is New Zealand’s leading aquifer dating specialist and characterises underground water movement in large aquifers. War Memorial Library Thursday 6 April, 6pm
GOING UP OR GOING DOWN? The Hutt Valley in a big earthquake Mr Russ Van Dissen Fault rupture, strong ground shaking, liquefaction, sinking, uplift, and landslides are all major issues the Hutt Valley faces in large earthquakes. Recent research has identified and further characterised vulnerable zones around the Hutt Valley. Russ Van Dissen is an earthquake specialist who has extensively studied the Wellington Fault and earthquake hazards in the Wellington regions for the past several decades, he is also leader on the ‘It's Our Fault’ project.
