THROUGH THE EYES OF SOLDIERS Join Eastbourne Library Manager, Jeffrey Russell, for the presentation ‘Through the eyes of soldiers: 15th September 1916 - NZ Division’s first attack on the Western Front‘. Follow 4 soldiers before, during and after the first attack on the Western Front by NZ infantry at the Battle of Flers through letters, diaries and official sources. JOIN US FOR THE HOUR OF CODE The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", and to show that anybody can learn the basics! FOOD FOR FINES Bring non-perishable food to any Hutt City Library in December and wipe your fines! Every item of food will go to your local food bank and you’ll get $5 removed from your library account. Last year we wiped $23,530.32 off library accounts - that's a lot of food going to Lower Hutt food banks! Don’t have fines but still feeling generous? Have the holidays fired your imagination with weird and wonderful ideas? Write them down!

Ride the light waves with us in our spectacular Shadow Box Theatre!

We’ll have different games and activities to help you get those ideas out of your head and onto the page! Ages 8-16.

60 YEARS OF SCOTT BASE Science on Ice: Discovering the Secrets of Antarctica For some scientific questions, Antarctica is the best – and sometimes the only – place to look for answers. Come and hear Veronika Meduna, author of Science on Ice: Discovering the Secrets of Antarctica, talk about this fascinating frozen land. The continent may even hold the secret to how life began on Earth – and what it might look like elsewhere. War Memorial Library Saturday 14 January, 11am or 1pm 60 years of New Zealand Science Endeavour in Antarctica - What we learned and why it is important New Zealand has led scientific expeditions to Antarctica every year since 1957, when Sir Ed Hillary led an NZ team to build Scott Base. Much of today’s research effort focuses on the drivers and impacts of global climate change and how Antarctica records, responds to, and drives these changes. Associate Prof. Nancy Bertler, Antarctic Research Programme and GNS Science, will explore some of the most exciting scientific discoveries of the past 6 decades and look towards the future, how rising seas from collapsing Antarctic ice sheets will affect every New Zealander now in the future.
