HIGH-RISE APARTMENT BUILDING
STUDENT PROJECT, HCMC’S UNIVERSITY OF ARCHITECTURE, 9TH SEMESTER, SEPT 2010
THIS HIGH RISE APARTMENT BUILDING HAS BEEN BUILT ON THE NEW EXPANDED URBAN AREA OF HOCHIMINH CITY, WHERE MANY IMMIGRANTS FROM OTHER AREAS COME TO. ALMOST OF THEM ARE THE YOUNG PEOPLE AND HAVE DIFFERENT BACKGROUND CULTURE. MY IDEA IS BUILD THE APARTMENT BUILDING ONLY HAVE ONE BEDROOM AND I CREATE THE PUBLIC SPACES INSIDE THE BUILDING TO CONNECT THE PEOPLE. FURTHERMORE, THE ALTERNATE LAYERS OF VOIDS AND MODULES KEEP THEY HAVE ENOUGH PRIVATE SPACE. MODULES ROTATE AROUND MAIN STRUCTURAL CORE MAKE EACH INDIVIDUAL APARTMENT HAVE ITS UNIQUE VIEW TO THE PUBLIC GREEN SPACE WHICH CONNECTS THE BLOCKS.

MY 16-WEEKS GRADUATION PROJECT, WAS A CONVERSION FROM AN ABANDONED DOCKYARD ON SAIGON RIVER’S RIVERSIDE INTO A NEW EXCHANGE CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS AND WHO LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY, WHERE MANY ACTIVITIES ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY HAPPENED HERE, NOT ONLY EXBIHITIONS AND CONGRESSES, BUT ALSO TRAININGS, WORKSHOPS AND EDUCATION AT ALL.
THE MAIN DESIGN GOAL IS “MATCH-MAKING A MARRIAGE” BETWEEN THE LANGUAGE OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE CHARACTERISTIC OF THIS RIVERSIDE AREA, WHICH IS IMPORTANT WITH LIFE-STYLE OF SAIGON.
MAIN CONCEPT IS FOLLOWING METABOLISM (SHINCHINTAISHA) , I MAKE 2 CATEGORIES OF MODULES FOR STRUCTURAL EXTENSION.
-THE MODULE OF “TREE AND THE POT” USE FOR “METABOLISM” ARCHITECTURAL IDEA. THE PLAZA AND PLAY-GROUND CAN BE EXTENDED FOLLOW Z-AXIS (UP TO THE SKY OR GO DOWN UNDERGROUND) BY PUT MORE MODULES AND MAKE THE CONNECTION OF MODULES. THE TREE IS FLYING IN THE SKY, GROWING UP WITH THE PURPOSES OF BUILDINGS.
-THE MODULE OF “UMBRELLA” FOLLOW THE SKY-PATH (WHICH CONNECTED THE TREE-AND-POT MODULES). THE STRUCTURE OF UMBRELLA-MODULE CONTENTS STEEL FRAMES AND POLYCARBONATE PLANES, THE ANGLE OF PLANE CAN BE CHANGED BY HAND OR BY MONITOR, FOR MAKING AN SUNSCREEN TO COVER THE SKY-PATH. THROUGH THAT COLORFUL PLANES, THE NATURAL LIGHT MAKE THE COLORFUL PATERNS IN THE GROUND AND BUILDING FACADES. WITH MULTI LAYERS PATHS AND FREEDOM ANGLE OF EACH MODULE, PEOPLE NEVER SEE THE SAME PATTERNS IN DIFFERENT MOMENTS OF DAYLIGHT.
TREE-AND-POT MODULE AND UMBRELLA MODULE IS BASE MODULES.OTHER MODULES CAN BE PLUGGED-IN TO THE BASE-MODULES. THAT SITE CAN HAVE A MEGASTRUCTURE (FOR MIXING MULTI-PURPOSES, MULTI-FUNTIONS) BY THOSE MODULES.
EVOLUTIONARY & MUTATION ARCHITECTURE
CHURCH OF ST NICHOLAS THE MIRACLE-MAKER, SHORT NAME: RUSSIAN CHURCH, WAS BUILT ON THE SITE OF THE DESTROYED MOSQUE, LOCATED IN THE SITE NEARBY THE RUSSIAN COMMUNITY IN SOFIA, BULGARIA. THROUGH 100 YEARS, ITS DETAILS HAS BEEN CHANGING AFTER SOME HISTORICAL EVENTS, INCLUDED THE BIG RELIGIOUS CONVENTIONS AND COMMUNISM OCCUPIED ERA IN SOFIA.
I DO SOME EXPERIMENT BASE ON MY IMAGINATION ABOUT THE EVOLUTIONARY AND MUTATION OF THIS CHURCH IN ITS CULTURAL ENVIROIMENT. THE ASIAN WAVE HAS LEFT SOME MARKS INTO BULGARIAN CULTURE AND EVEN THIS CHURCH HAS ITS CHINESE NAME ON GOOGLE MAPS. MY IMAGINATION IS WHEN EAST ASIAN PERSPECTIVE ABOUT AFTER-LIFE BELIEF MUTATES INTO WESTERN PHYLOSOPHY THINKING, THIS CHURCH CHANGED ITSELF IN WHOLE SCALE AND IN ITS EVERY DETAILS.
EVOLUTION OF ARCHITECTURE DETAILS, FROM RUSSIAN DETAILS & ORNAMENTS MIXXING AND EVOLUTION WITHIN ASIAN MUTUTATION PROCESS
THERE IS A CAFE IN THE COURTYARD. THE PAVILION MAKES IT BECOMES A PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO MEET AND SPEAK TOGETHER. THE SURFACE OF PAVALION IS MADE BY THE COMPONENTS WHICH CAN REACT TO THE HUMAN MOVEMENTS AND SOUND, TO ACHIEVE THE OBJECTIVE CREATING INTERESTING MOVABLE FACADE AND THE ABILITY OF SPACE SEPERATION.
WHILST PEOPLE IS MOVING, THE BALLOONS INSIDE EACH COMPONENT HAVE BEEN INFLATED TO MAKE THEM BIGGER OR SMALLER, THEREFORE THE GAPS INSIDE THESE COMPONENTS HAS CHANGED AND MAKE SUNLIGHT GO THROUGH THEM MORE OR LESS. DEPENDS ON THE LEVEL OF SOUND VOLUME FROM PEOPLE, THE COMPONENTS MOVE AND MAKE THE “FIGURATIVE” SEPERATION OF SPACE, TO MAKE PEOPLE HAVE THEIR PRIVATE SPACE TO SPEAK WITH ANOTHERS.

STRUCTURE
ONE OF THE DRAWBACK OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE IS FLATTENING THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CULTURES WITH THE GLOBALIZATION PROGRESS. IN OUR PROPOSAL, THE ORNAMENT SYSTEMS WOULD BECOME THE TOWER’S NEW STRUCTURE. MAIN GEOMETRY DESIGN / FORMFINDING PROTOCOL IS UTILIZING THE PRINCIPLES OF FRACTAL GEOMETRY, WHICH DERIVED FROM HERITAGE OR EXISTING ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGES. ORNAMENT IS THE LANGUAGE THROUGH WHICH ARCHITECTURE COMMUNICATES WITH A BROADER PUBLIC.

KURGI OBSERVATION TOWER COMBINES THE IDENTITY AND ATMOSPHERE OF NORTH VIDZEME BIOSPHERE RESERVE, THE WIDE LANDSCAPE OF SWAMP AND FOREST WITH ABUNDANT TREES IN A HORSE-FRIENDLY STRUCTURE. UNDERSTAND HOW BIG TREES BEHAVE IN NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AND TRANSLATE IT INTO A LANDMARK TO PROVIDE A SHELTER FOR HORSES. A WATER COLLECTING SYSTEM IS ATTACHED TO THE ENTIRE TOWER STRUCTURE TO PRESERVE THE UNIQUENESS OF THE SWAMP OF THE NORTH VIDZEME BIOSPHERE. THESE TWO GOALS ARE MERGED INTO A REMARQUABLE AND LIGHT CORTEN STEEL STRUCTURE (WITH TENSEGRITY SYSTEM), BLENDED IN WITH THE ENVIRONMENT. THE MULTIPLE LAYERS OF CABLES ARE THE WATER COLLECTING SYSTEM, WHICH ALSO SUPPORTS THE DISK PLATFORMS WHICH ARE PROVIDING THE SHADE FOR HORSES. THE 35-METER TOWER IS SHAPED TO EMBRACE THE CIRCULAR MOVEMENT OF A 360° OPEN VIEW EXPERIENCE. THE FIRST PLATFORM ARE WIDER THAN THE UPPER PLATFORMS. IT CONTRIBUTES TO STABILIZING THE STRUCTURE. ANOTHER FUN PURPOSE OF THE FIRST PLATFORM IS TO ALLOW VISITORS TO WATCH THE HORSES TO DRINK THE COLLECTED WATER OF THE TOWER IN A SHORT DISTANCE WITHOUT DISTURBING THEM. FIRST FLOOR PLATFORM IS WIDER THAN THE UPPER FLOORS TO STABILIZE THE TOWER, IN THE MEANTIME PROVIDING UNDERNEATH A LARGE SPACE FOR HORSES.

UMMAHAT AL SHAYK ISLAND RESORT _ MAY 2020
SCHEMATIC DESIGN KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES
A NEW HOSPITALITY CONCEPT EMERGING FROM THE RED SEA AND ONE THAT IS DEEPLY ROOTED IN THE SITE’S CHARACTERISTICS. DESPITE CHALLENGES PRESENTED BY THE DELICATE ENVIRONMENT, THE SITE-SPECIFIC APPROACH GUIDED THE TEAM IN CRAFTING LOW, HORIZONTALLY ORIENTED LAND VILLAS WITH GENTLY CURVED ROOFS MIRRORING THE NATURAL DUNES. THIS DESIGN NOT ONLY ENSURES GUEST PRIVACY BUT ALSO FOLLOWS ALONG WITH THE ISLAND TOPOGRAPHY, MINIMIZING SAND INFILL AND PRESERVING ITS NATURAL SHAPE. COMPLEMENTING THE LAND, VILLAS ARE CORAL-SHAPED, FLOATING UNITS THAT ARE INTERCONNECTED LIKE LIVING ORGANISMS.
A VILLAGE ON THE SLOPE, AIMS TO BRING VARIOUS GENERATIONS TOGETHER IN ONE HARMONIC SPACE, PROMOTING SHARED AMENITIES, RESOURCES, AND PLENTIFUL INTERACTION SPOTS THAT BLEND WITH NATURE AND CONFORM TO THE SITE’S INCLINE. THE DESIGN FEATURES A RANGE OF SPACES AND GARDENS, INTENDED FOR BOTH RESIDENTS AND VISITORS, THAT WILL NOT ONLY SPROUT LIFE INTO THE IMMEDIATE SURROUNDINGS BUT ALSO SERVE AS A BEACON FOR TOSHIMA.
PLAN FEATURES A SIMILAR FRONT-ON-THE-SLOPE GARDEN, CRAFTED FROM THE SLOPE’S EXCAVATED EARTH. BOXES GROUNDED TO THE FAÇADE SHOWCASE EVERYDAY FUNCTIONS – CAFES, GYMS, LIBRARIES – CREATING AN ANIMATED DAILY FRONTAGE AND FOSTERING AN INTERACTIVE NEIGHBORHOOD ENVIRONMENT. THE BUILDING’S OVERALL LAYOUT MIRRORS THE URBAN STRUCTURE, PRESENTING A SOLID PUBLIC FAÇADE AND A MORE INTIMATE RESIDENTIAL.
THE DESIGN MAINTAINS ALIGNMENT WITH THE SURROUNDING HEIGHTS, AND FRAGMENTED ROOFS PRODUCE A VILLAGE-LIKE FEEL WHILE SOFTENING THE STRUCTURE’S VOLUME. THE FRONT SLOPE MERGES THE BUILDING WITH THE STREET WHILE ADDING A TRIAD OF VARIATION AND COLOR TO THE SCENERY.
A VILLAGE ON THE SLOPE INTEGRATES THE EXTERIOR WORLD THROUGH ITS ROOF FORMS, GARDENS, AND ACCOMMODATION APPROACH. THE UNIQUE RULE OF ONE ROOF/FIVE ROOMS FOSTERS A FAMILIAL ATMOSPHERE CENTERED AROUND TWO LARGE INTERIOR GARDENS. THE GROUND FLOOR CAFE AND GARDEN WELCOME THE PUBLIC, WHILE THE SECOND FLOOR BOASTS EXPANSIVE OPEN SPACE PUNCTUATED BY A SLOPING ROOF, PROVIDING A VENUE FOR SPORTS, GATHERINGS, AND LEISURE AKIN TO A PUBLIC PARK. VILLAGE
HANOI, WITH ITS DISTINCTIVE BLEND OF VIBRANT CHAOS AND UNITY WITHIN DIVERSITY, IS REIMAGINED THROUGH AN ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION FEATURING CHARACTERISTIC ROOFTOPS.
SITUATED IN A HISTORICALLY AND CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT LOCATION WITHIN HANOI, THE SITE REQUIRES CAREFUL ATTENTION TO ITS INTEGRATION WITH THE SURROUNDING LAKE SPACE AND PEDESTRIAN AREAS.
THE PROPOSED PROJECT SEEKS TO CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF HANOI’S STREETSCAPE—A DYNAMIC AND COLORFUL ENVIRONMENT—BY INTERWEAVING TRADITIONAL HANOI ROOFTOPS WITH ELEMENTS REFLECTING THE CITY’S CONTEMPORARY URBAN FABRIC. THE CENTRAL TOWER, RISING PROMINENTLY WITH A MODERN AND INNOVATIVE DESIGN, SERVES AS A SYMBOLIC REPRESENTATION OF EVN’S PIVOTAL ROLE IN THE MODERNIZATION OF HANOI AND THE NATION.
