the way Icelanders are known for their peculiar taste in food — fermented shark and brennivín are just two of the strange things we like to eat. But some of our fridge staples are tastier than others.
12
Pylsa, Mathús The Icelandic hotdog gained worldwide attention in 2004 when US President Bill Clinton stopped by our most famous hotdog stand and feasted on a delicious dog. President Clinton only wanted mustard on his hotdog, but Icelanders always ask for “one with everything!” Try one for yourself at Mathús. Icelandic seafood, Nord Restaurant Icelanders pride themselves on their seafood and for good reason. Try the catch of the day at Nord Restaurant. Skyr, Pure Food Hall This rich, fat free yoghurt-like dairy product has gained worldwide popularity due to its texture and taste. We highly recommend you try one—get it from Pure Food Hall.
Harðfiskur (dried cod), Pure Food Hall Harðfiskur is one of the healthiest snacks you can get—it’s pure dried Icelandic fish. We like it with a lot of butter and a pinch of salt. Yummy!

Icelandic salmon, Pure Food Hall We know you can get salmon almost anywhere in the world nowadays—but the Icelandic one is truly special. Try some at Pure Food Hall—we dare you. Lýsi (fish oil), Pure Food Hall The Icelandic people have been taking Lýsi for decades and reaping the benefits. Lýsi is an Icelandic fish oil, stuffed with Omega-3 fatty acids and other good stuff that gives us strong hearts and minds. A spoon of Lýsi every day keeps the doctor away!

Fjóla Stefánsdóttir, store manager at Rammagerðin, the best spot to pick out a nice souvenir at the terminal, is a pro when it comes to picking out presents for your loved ones. “When choosing a souvenir to bring home to your family and friends, there are several things to consider. Since most all of our customers here are planning to bring their items with them on board, we need to make sure everything is wrapped nice and safe as well as not too bulky,” says Fjóla. “Many choose smaller items since they might have limited space on the plane,” she says as she proceeds to show us some of the more popular gift items at Rammagerðin.
Rammagerðin is located in the main shopping area.

do as the locals do
KEF Airport has magical qualities in the Icelandic mindset because of its status as the liminal space between Iceland and the rest of the world. Beer was prohibited in Iceland between 1915 and 1989. The only place you could buy beer (legally) was in KEF. From that time stems the tradition to have a beer when you arrive at the airport, even if it’s 6 o’clock in the morning. 26
During most of the 20th century, Iceland was under quite strict foreign exchange controls that resulted, among other things, in bans and/or strict controls on imports. Then Icelanders became accustomed to buying many things in the Duty Free that were normal consumer products in other countries.
For years, Icelanders bought sweets like Toblerone, M&M’s and After Eight in the Duty Free in KEF, simply because these items were not available in Iceland. Still today, Icelanders buy sweets out of habit like M&M’s and Toblerone in the Duty Free Store when they return home. Because of high duty and tax on tobacco and alcohol, Icelanders usually make full use of their duty-free allowance when arriving in Iceland from abroad. So, it’s not unusual to see almost every single person carrying a case of beer when leaving the airport. #wheninKEF live a little
