KEF Airport has magical qualities in the Icelandic mindset because of its status as the liminal space between Iceland and the rest of the world.

Beer was prohibited in Iceland between 1915 and 1989. The only place you could buy beer (legally) was in KEF. From that time stems the tradition to have a beer when you arrive at the airport, even if it’s 6 o’clock in the morning. During most of the 20th century, Iceland was under quite strict foreign exchange controls that resulted, among other things, in bans and/or strict controls on imports. Then Icelanders became accustomed to buying many things in the Duty Free that were normal consumer products in other countries. For years, Icelanders bought sweets
like Toblerone, M&M’s and After Eight in the Duty Free in KEF, simply because these items were not available in Iceland. Still today, Icelanders buy sweets out of habit like M&M’s and Toblerone in the Duty Free Store when they return home. Because of high duty and tax on tobacco and alcohol, Icelanders usually make full use of their duty-free allowance when arriving in Iceland from abroad. and I live in KEF It might seem weird for a puffin to live in an airport terminal, given that puffins normally live in the cliffs around the coast; in fact there are more than 10 million of us around Iceland. That means we outnumber the humans 30:1! But I’m no normal puffin and this is no normal airport. We’ve really work hard to make this a fun, relaxing place. Hanging out at the airport shouldn’t be a chore.
