Hexa Skylight
Kinetic Architecture project in Vancouver B.C Media: Hand drawings and modelings, computer modeling, computer animations
Hand-powered drive train system
Online Animation Link https://vimeo.com/70979753 Context The skylight is located in the center of a 30ft by 30ft art gallery space.
Criteria To create a gradient of light from light to dark - To create an intriguing pattern along with the varying light level - Use a hand cranked mechanism, 15- 20 seconds - A visible, sculptural, crank mechanism - Hand Crank engages rollers though a bevel gear - Slats are operated by the rollers - Rollers are connected via a cross joint To stack ventilate the gallery space - Be a leak proof - Operated independently from the slats - Use an electric motor with a switch - Worm gear engages window arms
Slat Motion Ideas for Development - What are the code requirements for snow load and lifting force on a skylight? - What sort of glazing specification is required? - Where would a human-powered operator be positioned in relation to the skylight? - For it to be successful cooling the space, what size window aperture will be required? - For it to be successful as a shading feature, what degree of darkness needs to be achieved? - How will the skylight relate to the roof structure? To roof Cladding? - How we develop more visually arresting and beautiful in terms of Light/ Shadow patterning making?
