LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
The Beauty Of The Brothas
W
hen we talk about the culture of Black beauty, I can’t help but think that Black men have gotten lost in the sea of Black Girl Magic. But the fellas are a big part of the narrative too, especially when it comes to those well-groomed beards, perfect lineups and a variety of hair looks they wear. There are enough examples of Black Man Beauty to supply a lifetime supply of #ManCrush posts. Yet, for so many years, it seems that the beauty industry didn’t pay so much attention to the grooming needs of Black men. But in recent years, we’ve seen an explosion of products made just for men. Beard co-washes, body washes, facial hair serums, you name it, it exists for the fella in mind now. That means your boo no longer has to invade your product supply to take care of his day-to-day grooming needs. That also means that men can go the extra step to upgrade their appearance—and make us all swoon in the process! That’s why this issue of Hype Hair is dedicated to the men. We’re celebrating the male stylists who are impacting the hair game, the barbers who make an impact in the community, and the hottest trends for men’s grooming.
But before you take notes, don’t forget to check out this issue for a few hair tips for your man. Black beauty is indeed inclusive, so make sure you help your man rise to the grooming occasion with the products and suggestions featured in this month’s edition.

But don’t worry, ladies. This issue isn’t solely about the fellas. We’re also featuring one of our favorite reality stars and cover girl, Shay Johnson of VH1’s Love & Hip Hop Miami! We interviewed the style chameleon to meet the woman behind the small screen image and get the details of her hair and beauty routine.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Dear Readers,
E
ach day provides a new chance to learn and grow. With that said, the concept of turning within comes to mind. Moving through your day prayerfully and with the awareness that God is with and in you provides spiritual support that can undoubtedly help you navigate through whatever you have yet to experience. When you consider embracing this approach to life, you may very well be blessed with the knowledge that because of this Divine connection, you are loved, protected and walking in favor. Though I feel this is true, I am very aware that, in most cases, we have the freedom to choose our path in this life’s journey. Some of our choices may be wonderful, while others may not. If we learn from the bad choices, become smarter, stronger and more spiritually aware, then at the end of the day, all things (even those circumstances) have worked together for our good. When I’ve made an unfavorable decision or have had to deal with the negative consequences of someone else’s bad choices, I find that spending some quiet time with God and asking Him to intercede always works. I ask Him to forgive my missteps, as well as those that others have made. You might consider doing the same. Doing this allows us to begin to relax, with the knowledge that forgiveness is a reality because Christ already paid the price with His own life. In time, the burdens lift and we are able to forgive others and ourselves. Any guilt can dissipate and make way for peace and new possibilities. We can then give thanks, move forward in a positive light and be ready for the blessings of a new day!
Peace & Blessings,
Adrienne Moore Publisher

HAIR DO’S & DON’TS TO FOLLOW DURING THIS CORONAVIRUS CRISIS Do we really need hair do’s’ and don’ts while the country is experiencing one of the worst viral outbreaks ever? I have seen your timelines, so yes. Many of us are at home in self-isolation and social distancing mode— getting more and more restless as the days go on. We’ve eaten more ’rona snacks than we care to admit and continue to conduct scouting trips for hand sanitizers and disinfectants like they are the holy grail. And now we’re looking at our beauty stashes wondering why we never tried a particular product before and now have time to try everything. And wait, isn’t there a hair shortage, too? Keep calm, folks. Before you pick up your shears or open up that box of color (that has been sitting for how long?), scan the QR code for some tips to keep your hair safe and sound during this Coronavirus crisis. REPORT: NEARLY 20 PERCENT OF TALC-BASED COSMETICS CONTAIN ASBESTOS It seems like each month a new report reveals just how toxic some of our fave hair and beauty brands are. But, the latest from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) might be one of the most alarming thus far. The EWG released a new report last month showing that nearly 20 percent of talcbased cosmetics products contain asbestos. Commissioned by the Federal Food and Drug Administration, the tests revealed that nine out of the 52 cosmetic products made with talc tested positive for the known carcinogen. Restore Damaged Hair with Creme of Nature Aloe & Black Castor Oil Collection By Pat G. Williams, Crème of Nature Brand Educator, Hairstylist and Author
T
here are several categories of hair damage that can cause breakage and reduce hair retention.
At the top of the list is cuticle damage. The cuticle is the first line of defense against all forms of hair damage. When the cuticle is damaged, the hair lacks sheen, tangles easily and has a rough texture. Hair with cuticle damage will also break easily, therefore preventing hair length retention. There are many causes to cuticle damage—such as heat styling, over-processing, or styles that may require abrasive handling of the hair (like braids that are too tight). Here are a few other categories to be aware of.
MOISTUREIMBALANCE IMBALANCE MOISTURE
Healthy hair should have moisture balance to give the hair
pliability and lubricate the interior layers of the hair. Common causes of moisture loss include daily manipulation, cold weather, chemical processing, and thermal styling.
PROTEINLOSS LOSS PROTEIN
The primary component of the hair is protein. Heat styling and over processing alter the second layer of the hair (the cortex) and may cause protein loss. Hair that has protein loss will break easily.
ELASTICITYDAMAGE DAMAGE ELASTICITY
Healthy hair can stretch about 20% of its length when dry and still return to its normal state. With elasticity damage, however, hair is extremely brittle and breaks easily when dry. When wet, it feels soft and spongy and will stretch excessively without returning to its normal state. Thermal styling is discouraged until hair is strengthened.

To combat these issues, Creme of Nature has developed a new called Aloe and Black Castor Oil Collection made especially for weak, breakage-prone, and damaged hair. The new Creme of Nature Aloe and Black Castor Oil Collection is infused with a blend of aloe vera juice, Jamaican black castor oil and vitamins to help moisturize and restore damaged hair with a healthy level of strength and noticeable length. It also infused with protein to help balance out protein loss. The Creme of Nature Aloe & Black Castor Oil Collection includes a Healthy & Long Fortifying Shampoo and Mask, as well as a Root Recharge to provide an invigorating and calming experience to the scalp. And for added hair retention, the line includes a Reconstructing Anti-Breakage Leave-In that reduces shedding and fallout as a result of breakage, while restoring moisture to prevent breakage and reducing split ends. The full collection is perfect for all hair textures, and is formulated without any sulfates, silicones, petrolatum, or mineral oil. It is the complete hair care package for your hair! Photo by Isaiah McClean/Unsplash
HOW TO USE: Use the Creme of Nature Aloe & Black Castor Oil Healthy & Long Fortifying Shampoo to cleanse the hair and scalp. It’s great for weak, breakage-prone or damaged hair. After thoroughly wetting the hair, apply shampoo, massage scalp and hair strands. Cleansing the hair and scalp is the first step in this collection to promoting healthy and long hair. After cleansing hair, follow up with the Creme of Nature Aloe & Black Castor Oil Strengthening Protein Treatment. When hair is intensely damaged and moisture starved, you must restore damage from root to tips with tender care. Sit under a under a hood dryer or gently blow dry without agitating the hair. DO NOT USE a plastic or processing cap to cover hair.
After rinsing the protein treatment thoroughly from the hair, towel dry and apply the Creme of Nature Aloe & Black Castor Oil Healthy & Long Fortifying Hair Mask, rinse, and follow up with the Creme of Nature Aloe & Black Castor Oil Reconstructing Anti-Breakage LeaveIn. This will reduce shedding and fallout associated with breakage, restore moisture, reduce split ends and control frizz. Spray as needed and massage into hair and scalp. To continue caring for your hair daily, use the Creme of Nature Aloe & Black Castor Oil Root Recharge Serum. It will instantly hydrate hair and dry scalp. Apply a few drops of Root Recharge to scalp by sectioning the hair and using the dropper to control application. Use a gentle circular motion to massage into scalp. Smooth any excess into damaged, dry, brittle hair strands.

Celebrity-Approved Cocktails By Tatayana Yomary

here is no denying that when it comes to caring for natural hair, moisture is the key to success. And while a nourishing shampoo, conditioner and leave-in styler have become standard, the classic three-step regimen is just the starting point. Sometimes, your kinks and coils need a little more love, and cocktailing has become the go-to remedy. One product, in particular, Perfect Results Cocktails, has been making a lot of noise in the natural hair world.
Melissa Hibbert
So much so that celebrity stylist Melissa R. Hibbert has given Perfect Results Cocktails her seal of approval. “As a beauty, skin, makeup artist, and groomer for many celebrities, I would not use something that doesn’t further your self-care and gives you an experience that you will love,” said Melissa. After using the Perfect Results Cocktails on Skip Marley, Bob Marley’s grandson, for his performance with H.E.R. at the 51st NAACP Image Awards, Melissa has become a fan. In preparation for the awards show, she used Mudslide (made with tea tree and coconut) on Skip’s beautiful coils, and then she chose Frozen Daiquiri (tea tree and hemp) to groom his beard. After seeing the amazing results, Melissa became a brand convert. She is now an official partner of Perfect Results Cocktails and is determined to get the word out about this fantastic cocktailing find. The cocktailing kit comes equipped with six premixed cocktails including Bahama Mama (argan, jojoba and almond oils), Long Island (Jamaican black castor oil), Martini (olive and avocado oils), Piña Colada (coconut oil and cocoa butter), Mudslide, and Frozen Daquiri. Each is set to provide hair with endless moisture and a sweet fragrance. They also come in silver cocktail shakers, which can be used while you’re on the go. From hot oil treatments, to a mix-in for your shampoo, conditioners or stylers, Perfect Results Cocktails has upped the ante in natural haircare.

TIPS FOR GROWING HEALTHY HAIR
Level Up Your Leave-In By Tatayana Yomary
T
ired of dealing with a damaged mane? Does it seem like that no matter what you do, your strands aren’t getting healthier? It may be time to switch things up in your haircare routine. Staying consistent is only half the work. You also have to use the right products to give your hair the attention it needs to grow healthy hair. So, of course, not just any product will work. It would help if you had something that strengthens, moisturizes and protects your hair from daily damage. And the ApHogee Curlific Moisture Rich Leave-In Spray will suit your needs. Unlike other leave-in conditioning sprays on the market, the ApHogee Curlific Leave-In offering takes your hair care to the next level.
Formulated with a blend of fruit oils, keratin amino acids, and proteins, this product works to strengthen your strands from root to tip. Since it’s normal for textured hair types to experience some knotting and tangling during the haircare process, it’s essential to use a product that can smooth and hydrate your mane. This leave-in helps to seal in moisture to replenish strands. As a result, your hair’s elasticity can improve, and hair breakage is no longer a factor. It also works wonders to protect strands from other hair woes like heat damage and everyday friction. Just spray on after your next shampoo to reap the benefits. It also works wonders to provide the hair with slip to make detangling your mane a smooth process. And, if you want a moisture boost between washes, spray on prior to styling and touch-ups. Growing healthy hair is attainable, and ApHogee has just made it easier. Try the ApHogee Curlific Moisture Rich Leave-In today. Photo by Ronise Da Luz on Unsplash

8 Ways to Help Bae Combat Male Pattern Baldness By Dr. Melanye Maclin-Carroll, M.D.
Photo by Justin Follis on Unsplash
O
kay, ladies, it’s time to get more educated on male pattern baldness (MPB), and to share this knowledge with the men in your life. This hereditary condition—medically called androgenic alopecia—affects men of all races and hair textures who are born with a hair loss gene from his mother’s or father’s side of the family. This gene affects his androgen hormones in specific areas of his scalp that lead to permanent and progressive hair loss. Those men affected by MPB, especially in the younger population, are typically frustrated by their hair appearance while others embrace their bald “sexy” head. Men can start noticing hair thinning as early as in their late teen years with continued progression. On the other hand, he may have a full head of hair until his 50s or 60s. The thinning and eventual baldness is caused by an active form of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that affects specific hair follicles in men with this genetic predisposition. If DHT levels rises, actively growing follicles (anagen phase) start to shrink, making hairs look thinner and eventually causing the hair to stop growing. The permanent balding patterns can start in the front and center of the scalp or receding temples along the hairline with no chance of regrowth.

Ask Dr Maclin_.indd 26
ECOCOBEAUTY
MPB is not curable and will continue to progress on the scalp. However, there are several treatment options to help your man feel “sexy” again.
3/19/20 4:09 PM
1
ORAL MEDICATIONS
Propecia (Finasteride) is a common treatment that requires a doctor’s prescription. It helps to prevent his testosterone from turning into DHT and preventing hair follicles from shrinking. Given that this medication affects all active testosterone, there are risks of potentially affecting other parts of his body that need it. For example, I’m sure he doesn’t want to decrease his libido! 2
TOPICAL MEDICATION
Minoxidil (Rogaine 2%-5%) can be purchased at the drugstore without a prescription. He has to apply it to parts of his scalp that are thinning or balding. Rogaine increases blood flow to his affected hair follicles in an effort to stimulate hair growth. If he is on high blood pressure drugs, he needs to be careful as it can drop his pressure more. 3
NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS
Basic hair multivitamins are not effective for MPB. However, there are special nutrients that block DHT, and when taken daily can help stimulate hair follicles to get healthier and working again. A very effective male hair loss supplement is dermatologist-developed BeauNutri. It is a marine protein and collagen proprietary blend that helps revive his hair follicles. Effective results can be seen within six months without side effects. www.beaunutri.com 4
SURGICAL HAIR TRANSPLANT
5
WEAVES/TOUPEES
These options provide immediate results that are almost undetectable. 6
MICROPIGMENTATION (TATTOO)
This procedure includes adding a pigment to the balding scalp to resemble his hair follicles. This can fade over time but can be redone. 7
LOW-LEVEL LASER
This option involves handheld devices or head units that require specific usage daily for several months. One has been proven by the FDA with promising results. 8
PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP)
Injections of his plasma are inserted into bald areas to help stimulate growth. This treatment is still in its early phases of development and is under investigation.
Dr. Mac is a licensed hair research dermatologist and founder of Innovative Hair Technology, Inc. For info or questions about hair and scalp care, visit www. askdrmac.com.
Cosmetic surgeons remove hair follicles from fuller areas, typically the back of the scalp and place it into thin areas. But there are risks. There could be bleeding at the surgical site, the transplanted areas may not respond, and it can be a very expensive procedure.

Miss Jessie’s Newest Shampoo & Conditioner By Tatayana Yomary
There is no better way to welcome a new season than by revamping your haircare routine. Textured strands need as much TLC as they can get, and with everyday elements like the sun and heat-styling tools getting in the way, it’s important to protect your hair all around. One hair brand that never fails? Miss Jessie’s. A true natural hair staple, this brand is beloved by many celebs such as Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Yara Shahidi, and so many more. The haircare giant has just released the Miss Jessie’s Harm Me Knot Gentle Sulfate-Free Shampoo and the Miss Jessie’s Soften Me Up Conditioner to cater to your strands. A sulfate-free essential, the Harm Me Knot shampoo is perfect for thirsty kinks, waves and curls. This shampoo is made with a blend of nourishing ingredients to cleanse your natural strands with ease. Much more than a soil-removing hair product, you can count on smoothing away tangles and matted strands for a soft and hydrated finish. It also works well with chemicallytreated strands to help you maintain your color while keeping your hair in proper shape. Once your strands have been gently cleansed with the Harm Me Knot shampoo, it’s time to add the Soften Me Up conditioner to your routine. Unlike other conditioners on the market, this offering has a super creamy and moisturizing formula that helps to lock in moisture from root to tip. Its conditioning properties also play well with chemically-treated hair and damaged strands. With a considerable amount of slip, you’ll be able to detangle hair instantly for a silky smooth finish. And with freshly moisturized strands, you can create gorgeous perm rod sets, Flexi rods sets, wash and go’s, and more with ease. Our natural kinks and curls are the most beautiful textures out there, and Miss Jessie’s will help you maintain its beauty.

Melt Your Lace with KISS By Tatayana Yomary
S
ew-ins are no longer ruling the world of hair extensions. Now, more than ever, beauty lovers are trading in their wefts for wig units, and we are absolutely loving it. But, like a good sew-in, they must be properly installed. The key to making your hair look snatched with every wear is the right bonding method. Finding the right options to suit your needs can be a challenge, so once KISS All Mighty Lace Bond Glue hit the shelves, we had to stock up. Known for supplying the best nails, eyelashes, and other essentials, KISS has been killing the beauty game for years. So, you can bank on this bonding glue to get the job done. Tested for over a year, this bonding glue keeps your lace in place while protecting your hair and edges from any breakage. It is designed to provide a strong and secure hold that removes easily without any leftover residue so you can keep your lace in place and flaunt a perfectly melted look. The odor-free formula is also free of harsh chemicals, parabens and sulfates. To use, simply clean and remove any residue from your hairline. Squeeze out a thin, even layer onto the end of a rattail comb or a popsicle stick and apply below hairline. Once the glue becomes clear and tacky, apply another layer for extra security. Place your lace wig on your head and hold your hairline until dry. Perfect for those who want to keep their baby hairs intact, this glue will not disappoint. When it’s time to remove your wig, pick up the KISS Almighty Wig Remover to release your lace without having to lose any hair. Apply a few drops of the wig remover on your hairline and other glued areas. Massage the product into the lace until it gets soapy and let it sit for a few minutes. Follow up with water and gently remove your wig. With so many benefits, it’s easy to see why this bonding glue is a hot buy. And, with plenty of bonding glue options that work against helping you maintain healthy hair, this offering is a breath of fresh air.

3 Tips to Upgrade Your Wig Game For Spring
pring is here in full bloom, and we are offering tips to help you ladies serve hair looks. Spring is the best time to give new style ideas a test run. What better way than wearing a wig to try something new, daring and fresh? Here are some wig styling tips to turn heads this spring!

CURLS, CURLS AND MORE CURLS Refresh an old wig with curls. Add a new look to an older human hair wig by setting a curly look with rods. All you need is a little styling lotion and curling rods, ½-inch or smaller, depending on your desired look. You can set curls under a hooded dryer or with a curling wand if you choose.

Separate the curls one-by-one to build volume. Go slow and stop once you achieve the desired look. The more you separate, the bigger the hair. Cut layers for added style and more volume and place a part on your favorite side for some sex appeal.

GET COLORFUL The gray trend isn’t getting old any time soon. Keep the styling simple with a flat iron or big curls on a gray look. If gray isn’t your thing, a more naturallooking brown is an easy wig upgrade. Browns provide a “kissed by the sun” look to wigs and even natural hair. If it’s time to step out with a completely new look, go for something bold like blue. Limit the color to the ends, with dark roots, to add a touch of boldness without going overboard. Take the style quotient up a notch with voluminous curls. If it’s a wig that’s been sitting around for a while, try a new style on your own. Consult your hair care professional to reduce costly mistakes when coloring and cutting wigs that are investment pieces.

THE CLASSIC BOB The bob is timeless. The straight bob at 8” is the perfect length and offers a chic and natural look. Light layering on the ends and low density make this one of the most naturallooking bob wigs on the market. Most wigs reach beyond the shoulders. If styling your own, simply take a few inches off the ends to achieve a short bob look. Add a minor curve to the ends with a flat iron and layer the ends to fluff the look. A bob just above the shoulders keeps you cool when the temperatures rise. There’s the option to be stylish but without an overwhelming amount of hair. The bob is very low maintenance and can go from work to date night. Whatever styling tips you choose, you’re sure to enter spring with style. If you’ve got a custom look in mind, The Virgin Hair Fantasy is ready any season to help you stay on trend.

Jennia Fredrique-Aponte
ALL HAIR Y TYPES
By Stephenetta (isis) Harmon
ou may not know Jennia FredriqueAponte by name, but chances are you have seen her face. On television. In movies. On billboards. And in anything related to Black hair. Her picture used to be one of the first to appear in a Google search on “African American hair.” Companies have even made and named wigs after her own hair creations, while some just steal her likeness.
Her acting credits go back as far as the late ’90s with television appearances on The Hughleys, One One One, My Wife & Kids, Half & Half, and Passions. But after growing tired of being typecast, she decided to create roles that allowed her to celebrate all aspects of her Black girl (and hair) magic. Now, she runs production company Full Frequency Media with her husband Sol Aponte, to bring their voices and visions to life. Their projects have included a celebrity interview series and two full-length films and, most recently, a series collaboration with REVOLT TV celebrating Black excellence. Here, we talk about her journey towards loving her hair and creating space for Black girl magic (and Black boy joy). HYPE HAIR: You’ve enjoyed a lasting career in entertainment. How did you go from acting to writing, directing and producing? JENNIA FREDRIQUE: I began writing when I was seven years old. As a kid, I always wanted to act, and it came easily to me, so that’s what I went for in my teens. As I began to grow as a storyteller, I became increasingly frustrated with the roles I was being offered (the girlfriend, the fiancée), so I started to take my writing more seriously. It was scary at first, but the most satisfying career choice I have ever made. Directing allows me to flex every one of my creative muscles: storytelling, production design, fashion, and hair. I often call my first film, Sacred Heart, my Prince album because much like Prince, I wrote it, starred in it, did hair, makeup, costume design, and production design. And we shot it in my favorite city—Paris. MADE IN USA

HH: Why is it important to be behind the camera? JENNIA: As a woman of color, stories for us and by us are essential. My goal behind the camera is to tell stories that not only elevate but educate us.
3/19/20 4:19 PM
HH: Does that have any impact on how you approach hair and makeup for your actors? JENNIA: Sometimes, we underestimate the power Hollywood has. In terms of hair, my second film, 90 Days, stars gorgeous Teyonah Parris, and it was imperative for me that she rocked a natural look. There is no conversation about Black women or even Black culture that doesn’t include Black hair. HH: Your latest project, Anatomy of A Queen, premiered last month in collaboration with Sean “Diddy” Combs. What inspired it? JENNIA: The “Anatomy Series” began with a documentary centered around phenomenal women of color. With its success, REVOLT asked us to create five more. Each one is essentially about Black excellence and covers various topics from fatherhood and art to street fashion. The themes we are exploring are centered around my purpose, which is to uplift and, ultimately, to tell the truth about the beauty of my people. HH: We’re loving your hairstyle. What has your hair journey been like? JENNIA: As a young girl, I wanted straight hair like Halle Berry and Robin Givens. I watched the movie Boomerang and wanted to look like [them]. Before that, it was every White girl I came across. Their hair blew in the wind; they could run their hands through it. That’s what Photo by Ray Andrews I wanted, and no one could convince me otherwise. Not having naturally straight hair and wanting it wasn’t very easy. The fact that society has us feeling like our hair is a political statement is not only difficult, it’s unfair. From pressing combs in the kitchen to harsh relaxers, my thick hair was in a constant state of damage. After some serious breakage [and some inspo from Janet Jackson], the solution was simple: braids. Then I moved to the West Coast, the land of weave and palm trees. [The late] Eric Foreman [Aaliyah’s hairstylist] gave me my very first weave, and I was hooked. If I couldn’t afford to get my hair done, I would borrow the money. If I couldn’t borrow the money, I would make a bill wait so that I could get my hair done. It was not a game!
HH: So, when did you start loving your own hair? JENNIA: I fell in love with my hair the moment I made a decision to start doing it myself. It’s wonderful to have control over my own looks and not need to depend on a stylist to help me pull off a look. I feel like a magician every time I step on to a red carpet. HH: What was that process like? JENNIA: My first attempt? Epic fail! I remember spending hours trying to straighten and add tracks and looking pretty bad, but I didn’t give up. Trial and error—lots of errors—led me down a glorious path of DIY. With much patience and practice, I got pretty good. Even Eric gave me props! HH: Now that you do your own hair, what’s your go-to hairstyle? JENNIA: Right now, I am loving my goddess locs. It’s my favorite protective style. They take me forever to do, but they last for months. HH: When are you happiest with your hair? JENNIA: I’m happiest with my hair when I set out to try a new look and nail it. When you do your own hair, you end up with a ton of fails. Now, I feel like a pro at my 4B and 4C hair. I also realize that as a Black woman, there is no hairstyle that is off-limits. Black girl magic is real. HH: What is your hair regimen like? JENNIA Right now, I keep my scalp oiled with a mix of coconut oil and shea butter. HH: Any must-have products you can’t live without? JENNIA: I love Miss Jessie’s entire line! Also Mixed Chicks and Carol’s Daughter. HH: What does “good hair” mean to you now? JENNIA: Good hair means having edges! I now know that all hair is good hair, but it took me a while to get here. As a kid, I thought my 4C hair was far from good because I was constantly comparing my hair to White girls. When I was 12, my mom bought me my first Hype Hair Magazine, and it literally changed my life. It’s so important for girls to see themselves represented.
Now, I have been on every possible hair journey—weaves, braids, natural, straight, curly, wavy, wigs, and even locs.

here is absolutely nothing worse than working through knots and tangles. Not only are you in fear of suffering from breakage, but spending a lot of time in your mane can leave your arms pretty sore. While many naturalistas love to flaunt their natural curly textures with wash-and-go’s, twist outs, braid outs and more, not having the right product on hand can be disastrous—especially your conditioner. We all know that your conditioner has to have moisturizing ingredients to keep your curls soft and manageable. That’s why we are crushing on the Kinky-Curly Knot Today Leave-In Conditioner! Known for giving natural manes the boost that it needs to look its very best, Kinky-Curly has not missed a beat since entering the hair game.

NATURAL HAIR BUYS
Color and Curls By Tatayana Yomary
These days it's all about spicing up your strands with a color. From super bright hues to traditional tones, hair coloring is a great way to experiment with different looks. While hair coloring methods can frighten you, because of its ability to promote brittle and dry strands, you can avoid all of that with a hair color system that's made to keep your hair in tip-top shape. That's why we are obsessed with the Curls Unleashed Color Blast Temporary Makeup Wax. The Curl Unleashed Color Blast Temporary Makeup Wax is a temporary color system with vibrant color formulations that safely add color to your mane without damaging results. Formulated with natural ingredients, this color complements natural textures perfectly to define and elongate curls with a touch of color. Not to mention, you don't have to worry about sticking with one color for weeks on end. Since this is a safe hair coloring option, you can try out different shades. Just wash out your color with one shampoo and color your mane again and again. Available in nine colors—including vibrant pinks, purples, reds and blues—you can truly get the colorful hair you're looking for. And if you're interested in sticking to classic hair color shades, Curls Unleashed Color Blast has a few options to keep it natural, as well. Hair coloring can be a tricky process since certain products can fade quickly from your hair, while others can leave you with dry and damaged hair. Instead of putting your mane at risk for any damage, you want to play it safe with hair color that you can trust—and Curls Unleashed Color Blast Temporary Makeup Wax certainly lives up to the hype.

Hair Color for Men By Tatayana Yomary
T
hink that fabulous hair color is only reserved for women? Think again! The same way women love to change up their look with hair color, men are also jumping on the trend. From full-color jobs, highlights and more, the possibilities are truly endless for a stylish look. As always, hair coloring can be a challenge, especially when you want to keep your strands in mint condition and flaunt vibrant color. So, if you’re ready to change it up, the Bigen EZ Color for Men is coming in major clutch. A nice change of pace for the trendy man, Bigen EZ Color for Men is making it super easy. While most hair color options only cater to the hair on your head, Bigen can also be used on your beard for a well-rounded look. And while you may think that this hair color will stain your skin, Bigen offers a pleasant surprise—as it won’t stain or drip.
Not to mention, this hair color provides exceptional grey color coverage for a youthful mane and beard. This cream formula is easy to apply and can save you a trip to your barbershop. Complete with two re-sealable tubes, this product allows you to use only the amount of color you need. And you can save the rest for future touch-ups or your next hair color without the fear of the color going bad. We also love that this product is ammonia-free and contains low peroxide. Made with aloe extract and olive oil, your hair will be moisturized from the beginning to the end of your coloring process. As a result, hair is left with a natural shine, burst of color and a healthy look and feel. To color your mane, comb the EZ Color into your hair or beard and leave on for 10 minutes. Once the time is up, rinse the color out of your hair.

Men’s Grooming Trends By Stephenetta (isis) Harmon
S
imply put, men’s grooming is booming. Reports show the industry is expected to rake in $81.2 billion by 2024.
It’s not that men’s demand for wanting to look good has changed. While women are at the salon, men are at the barbershop—and we all are watching tutorials on how to address our latest needs, which is really just healthy, good looking hair and skin. What has changed over the years is access to products made, especially for men and general perceptions. The conversation is no longer centered on male masculinity—it’s just about doing you. The beard movement remains strong. Man weaves have gone from laughable memes to $1,500 rituals. And men are getting their product junkie on. Instead of stealing our toiletries, they are buying—or have created—their own fixes that extend beyond clippers, beard oils and some “smell good.” With the rise in available products, we are also seeing general brands actually market to men— especially Black men. In much the same way Rihanna turned the beauty world upside-down by not just carrying umpteen foundation shades, but also simply seeing us in the campaigns. Black men are seeing themselves. Men are upgrading their at-home grooming regimens, too. They are giving themselves facials, finding innovative ways to perfect classic looks and creating grooming communities to address their most pressing needs. Here are some grooming trends to watch.
BEARD LOVE Yes, gawd! Men’s beard care continues to rise with brands like Bevel and SheaMoisture catering specifically to Black men and their kinky, coily roots. Men have upped the game with detailed regimens to moisturize, detangle and shine up their beards (that won’t leave our faces all scratched up).

DURAGS If a man is on a mission for seasick waves, then trust that he has a durag nearby. Much like our tried-and-true bonnet, it helps protect the hair and set the style overnight. The nighttime accessory has also morphed into a fashion staple with whole festivals and fashion lines catering to it.
INCHES ON INCHES While many are all about a fresh fade and line-up, more and more Black men are growing out their tresses. From locs and afros to silk blow-outs, they are serving up major hair envy. Artists like Trinidad James are slaying silky smooth blowouts, and R&B crooner Sammie is living his best hair life with his flourishing textured mane.

CLEAN LINES For those keeping it short, a clean line is everything. The same holds true for tapered cuts, wild and free afros, and even twisted sponge looks. We are also loving the expertise barbers are showing in the edge art department. They are creating full-on artistic masterpieces with their clippers.

MAN WEAVES If you want ever to enjoy a flawless install, check out the work of such hair artists as Wade The Barber and Mickey Da Barber. Their transformations with full lace front fades, and loc extensions are epic. “They are reinventing themselves and changing up their self-esteem,” says celeb hairstylist Larry Sims about man weaves. “I think it’s dope.” Hair transplants and tools to thicken up thinning hairlines are other options men continue to embrace.
COLOR FANATICS Photo courtesy Wade The Barber
Artists and athletes like Chris Brown, Jaden Smith, Odell Beckham, Jr., and Lil Yachty have made hair color their playground. And more and more men are following suit, following many of the current color trends. Expect to see more bleached looks, especially on shorter hair, along with tipped ends and bold colors and highlights on tapered looks. Think “fun, fashion colors,” says cut and color expert Dereq C. “Blue, pink, purple and red are hot right now.”

He reminds us not to forget about natural blacks, too. “Most of us men dye our beards black to make it look fuller and thicker.”

MANICURES & PEDICURES Clean nails and fresh cuticles have always been in. We see more barbershops cater to manicure and pedicure needs with full nail stations. Many artists like Trinidad James, A$AP Rocky, Snoop Dogg, and A$AP Ferg are also embracing nail art.

WAVES ON SWIM This isn’t a trend. It’s a must-have. Have you seen the lengths men will go to get the perfect 360 waves? We’re not just talking curve brushes and silk durags. Men have created some innovative regimens, including wolfing and wet towel and plastic bag methods, to lock-in the deepest and most defined of waves. YouTubers like 360Jeezy have millions of subscribers tuned in to perfect their techniques.

SMOOTH SKIN Let’s be clear. Men have never been here for razor bumps or skin irritation. But now the fellas don’t have to be a celeb to hit up the salon for full facials, white head removals, and spa treatments. My own father just got into beard waxing, and he can’t stop talking about how his spots are gone.

STYLIST SHOWCASE
KIYAH WRIGHT By Stephenetta (isis) Harmon
K
iyah Wright has been giving us hair life since the ‘90s era that ushered in hip-hop soul and innovative looks that continue to trend today. Being a hairstylist is literally the only job she’s ever known. She started at doing hair as a teen in her living room, and eventually got her big break from music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, where she styled the manes of Mary J. Blige and Faith Evans. That led to work with the likes of such hair divas as Tyra Banks, Gabrielle Union, Jennifer Hudson, Iman, Brandy, Gabrielle Union, Kerry Washington, Taraji P. Henson and more. Twenty-six years later, she is now an icon in her own right. The two-time Emmy winner is an imagemaker helping to transform how women view themselves, a brand ambassador, and a beauty boss looking to help other stylists rise as she builds her own empire. Here, the Muze founder chats with us about the transformative powers of hairstyling, trash trends, and her styling must-haves.
HYPE HAIR: We have literally been watching (and emulating) your work on entertainment legends for the past three decades. What keeps you motivated—and relevant—in the industry? KIYAH WRIGHT: I really love making women over. That inspires me. You can shift the mood; you can shift someone’s look; you can change their whole energy. I like the whole giving back, the philanthropy side of hairstyling. [A good hairstyle] literally changes somebody’s life.
HH: You’ve seen trends come and go over the years. What trends do you wish you could just throw away right now? KIYAH: We need to run away from them godd**n baby hair. I’m not going to say I hate it, hate it. It’s just not my clientele. I don’t feel like you need baby hair swirling around your face. It was a way to kind of cover up the glued edges from being white. We’ve got better options now, so baby hair, be gone! Another one is humpy heads, because they are not doing their braid foundation right. Let’s first get that braid foundation right!

Your hair and your beauty are directly connected to your self-esteem. You could be the most confident person all day. But if you don’t look good, you won’t feel good—and you won’t be your best self. I make everybody feel like a celebrity. I get a rush from that, from making you look and feel your best.

HH: What do you do to help with blending edges? KIYAH: A lot of my wigs I put right behind the hairline and leave your edges out. Then I use L’Oréal Magic Root Cover Up Spray, so any little errors or anything that you can’t blend along your hairline, you spray a little bit of that to blend and cover.
KIYAH: Yeah, I went for a hero—and right now, it’s wigs. So, I shifted gears and went with wigs over a product line. It’s like the new hair wardrobe. That was the decision I made like two years ago and kind of put my haircare line on delay. Now, Ciara wears my wigs. La La [Anthony] wears my wigs. Halle Berry wears my wigs. So many women are wearing them.
Some people’s hairline is really thin. I understand that, so I’ll do just the front—like right where the widow’s peak area is. I’ll just glue that, and then I’ll still leave out those edges just for flexibility. If the wind blows, you’ve got a little bit of freedom to tuck it behind your ear.
I’m also an ambassador—I’ve been with Procter & Gamble for almost 11 years. I started with Clairol—I was with them for nine years—and now I’m with Pantene Gold Series and Head & Shoulders Royal Oils.
HH: What do you want to see more of? KIYAH: I want to see more people doing their natural hair. I’m liking the fact that I’m seeing my clients be comfortable with natural hair. The girls are feeling more comfortable with themselves.
HH: What are your faves from those collections? KIYAH: [The Gold Series] styling line is great—especially for those girls who wear braids. When I do my braid ups on my wigs, I always use their braid cream—it’s because it gives you a lot of slippage. Amazing! I love their edge control, too. It’s actually pretty good. It’s not too hold-y.
HH: Tell us about your hair brand, Muze. It’s got a whole collection of wigs and extensions, right?
Head & Shoulders is also something I actually use. It’s great for color and softening, hydrating hair. I was kinda shocked.

But that’s good because I don’t want to be talking about something I don’t like! They have a scalp elixir that has peppermint oil in it. It tingles the scalp and really helps prevent you from having an itchy scalp under your braids or under the weave. HH: What else is in your must-have styling arsenal? KIYAH: My Muze Last Look hair spray. It’s a light, flexible holding spray. I don’t like crunchy hair. It’s brushable; it’s comb through-able. It sets your hair and the next day you can curl over it. I can’t live without L’Oreal Magic Color Spray. My Tancho sticks. It’s great for flyaways, for pixie cuts. It’s really good for just laying your edges and blending your hair with the weave. You know how the ends sometimes are not blending in the weave? Just put a little bit of that Tancho Stick Styling Wax on the ends of your hair and you hit it with that flat iron, it will blend right in. It’s just a good multiuse product. And, I love a good edge control.

HH: Do you think you’ll go back to developing your own haircare product line? KIYAH: I have it all coming. My line is pretty much ready. I just have to go out and fundraise.
StylistShowcase_JDH_ih.indd 56
HH: What else are you working on? KIYAH: I want to build my brand out to be like the “Paul Mitchell” of textured haircare. I have a program called the “Muzepreneur” program where [stylists] come on board, and I’m basically it was like your vendor. You get everything through me, and I house everything on a platform where you can highlight and showcase the Muze hair products and make a percentage of the profits. I also want to have my own factory and give that [education] to other stylists who don’t understand the business. Everybody can’t run a haircare brand. It’s hard as hell. It’s honestly one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my entire life. So I am working on building an empire that can help others do it, too.

COVER STORY
Shay Johnson Showing the Beauty Behind Reality Stardom By Jessica De Vault Hale
W
hen I had the opportunity to interview Shay Johnson in Miami, I didn’t quite know what to expect. In a way, it felt like I knew her. I distinctly remember her being a fiery cast member of VH1’s Flavor of Love 2 in 2006 as “Buckeey.” She made another reality show appearance on the network’s Charm School and later entered the Love & Hip Hop franchise in 2012 on the Atlanta series. Now she’s one of the primary characters on Love & Hip Hop Miami, serving us new looks on a weekly basis. From bombshell blonde tresses and tousled body waves to lush lashes, Shay blows our minds on every episode. And did I mention how inspiring her fitness game is? Needless to say, I was not disappointed. Rocking blonde-dyed, Urban Beauty Hair bundles, she was beyond stunning, with an equally beautiful spirit to boot. There is, indeed, more to Shay than meets the eye on our television screens. Read on to learn more about her latest endeavors, personal struggles, and her personal perspective on Black beauty. HYPE HAIR: You have a lot of great projects going on right now. Can you tell us what you’ve been up to? SHAY: Lately, I’ve been focused on TheHealthyHand. com, which is a company I helped create, based off my situation surrounded around fibroids. We provide fibroid relief pills and tea to suppress your symptoms. We also provide Detox Belly Fat Flush and Detox Flush. Both are to promote better health by removing the toxins out of your body and also reducing belly fat. HH: What made you start The Healthy Hand, and why is it important to you? SHAY: When I had fibroids, I was terrified of the surgery. This was the only option the doctors gave

me, so I searched for additional options and came across a holistic doctor who provided herbs to help suppress my symptoms. At this point, my menstrual cycle was over 14 days. Once I started taking the herbs, my menstrual went down to 8 to 9 days. My pelvic pain became minimum, and my clots reduced. Based on my positive results, I figured other women needed to reduce their symptoms. This is how Thehealthyhand.com was created. We have been able to help hundreds of women reduce their symptoms for fibroids. I’m proud to have helped so many women. HH: There have long been studies about relaxers being linked to fibroids. Given your personal experience, do you find yourself avoiding certain beauty treatments or foods to stay healthy? SHAY: I have personally have not had a perm in over 15 years. I’ve definitely heard this was one of the many causes of fibroids, but I believe fibroids come from high estrogen intake. HH: Most of us are used to seeing you on Love & Hip Hop Miami, where your look changes every episode. How do you take care of your natural hair and skin when you’re not filming and being a style chameleon? SHAY: When I’m filming, I wear a lot of makeup and am constantly getting my hair done—which I absolutely love. But when I’m not filming, I don’t wear makeup. Most people are surprised to hear I have a face full of freckles, which I adore. Freckles run in my family. Some people have asked, “Are they fake?” No, they’re not. I wouldn’t even waste time
trying to create fake freckles. This is just what God blessed me with, so I embrace them. I’ve tried several products for my face, but I’ve noticed using natural black soap and water is the best thing for me. My face is too sensitive, so I don’t use too many products to clean my face, because if I do, I will break out. You have to find what’s best for you. HH: What are some beauty tips you swear by? SHAY: I use natural black soap for everything, especially on my face. I will suggest you wash off your makeup before bed, or you can cause future problems. HH: What’s been your favorite hair look you’ve worn thus far? SHAY: My reunion look. I was the best dressed—best hair, best makeup! Everybody was cute, but I killed it. HH: Many of our favorite reality TV celebs have a large collection of hair and wig units. Have you amassed your own collection over the years? SHAY: I have between 45 to 50 units. HH: Black women are being celebrated for our Black Girl Magic and beauty more than ever before. How would you personally describe beauty? SHAY: I believe beauty is what you make it. You only can define what makes you beautiful. Beauty, for me, comes from my focus and drive. My Black girl magic has helped

other women to speak up and speak out by telling their stories, as I did on relationships, fibroids, and career goals. Everyone has a story, but by telling your story, you never know how many people you can help. I’ve used my platform to reach hundreds; but even if I reached one, that would have been self-gratifying for me. HH: What can we expect to see from you in the future? SHAY: Growth means so much more to me today than it ever did a few years back. I’ve learned so much over the
years, mainly through my mistakes. I’m not perfect, but I’ve learned to push forward and accept my faults and all. In the future, you will continue to see me strive for success. I’ll continue to push my products—Full Body Detox and Belly Fat Flush—on TheHealthyHand.com, but most importantly, I will continue to be a spokesperson for fibroids. I know my story has helped many women, and it will continue to help many more as long as I speak up and speak out. I’ve spoken at several different women empowerment events, schools, and conferences. I won’t stop.

MEN’S CORNER
Bringing The Barbershop To Those In Need By Molly Fleming
B
ruce Waight, Sr. has always had his eye on working at the barber chair.
He has been cutting hair in Oklahoma City for about 12 years. His business is new, but his impact on the community has been growing for more than a decade. “I’ve wanted to be a barber ever since I had my first haircut experience,” he says. “It makes you feel so good and confident. After that, I knew I wanted to do this.” Bruce moved to Oklahoma City in 2001, and before he hit his 30th birthday, he decided to make his barbering dream come true. While on a trip to the Bahamas, he saw a mobile barbershop, and that image stuck with him. When he returned home and started generating clientele, one of his regular customers, Major Percy, became unable to make it to the shop. “He was always complaining about missing the shop and the camaraderie,” Bruce shares. “He missed being around everyone.” Bruce was inspired by the mobile shop in the Bahamas to take the barbershop experience to Major and other customers that had trouble making it to his location.
When he wasn’t making drives to Wewoka, he was pounding the marble floors at the Oklahoma State Capitol to change state laws to allow mobile barbershops. Mobile barbershops became legal by the time En Rooted was ready to hit the road, taking to the streets in 2017.

From Tuesday to Saturday, Bruce and fellow barber Bryan Moore would take the travel trailer to apartment complexes and businesses. While out and about with En Rooted, Bruce would often set up shop at the Homeless Alliance in Oklahoma City, offering free cuts and trims for those in need. The nonprofit organization is a hub of state, federal and local agencies that help people get back into housing. The Alliance operates a day shelter for people experiencing homelessness. The visits to the shelter helped Bruce see the need in the community for the services offered by him and Moore. He didn’t forget about the residents experiencing homelessness even after opening his own brick-andmortar location, Rooted Barber + Shop. He called the Alliance to inquire about setting up a permanent barbershop/salon in the building. When Bruce made the call, the organization had a small room with a mop sink and a chair, shared Homeless Alliance Executive Director Dan Straughan. But that wouldn’t have the same ambiance that Bruce offers his customers, so he covered the costs to make it look like a regular shop. Offering that barbershop experience was an important part of setting up space at the Alliance, says Bruce. He says he has seen people cut the hair of those in need while the sitting in a parking lot, or with the barber setting up a tent. He compares what he is doing to getting served a steak at a five-star restaurant. He wants the customer to feel like they’re being waited on, whether the customer is paying or not. He doesn’t want them to feel like they have to eat their meal outside. “They deserve that attention. Everyone deserves to come in here,” he says. “If you walked in there, you wouldn’t know you’re in the Homeless Alliance day shelter,” says Dan. “To be able to go in there and be treated like a regular human for a few minutes while you get squared away, that’s a real blessing as we see it.” Bruce’s program, Hair Collaborative, organizes the barbers and cosmetologists and operates the shop at the Alliance. The hairstylists must be licensed or in school under the supervision of their licensed instructors. The cuts help people feel more confident about themselves, which can help them get back on a better track. “It’s one thing to get your hair cut, but to have that experience
of being normal, even for just half an hour, that’s something our guests don’t get to experience very often,” Dan adds. When Bruce isn’t working on his own projects or in his shop, he is also helping his fiancée, Vanessa Morrison, with her nonprofit organization, Cut It Forward. The organization collects and purchases ethnic hair and skincare products for foster parents and adoptive caregivers while providing culturallyspecific education.

Bruce said he sometimes thinks they might do too much. But they’re using their skills to make a difference, which is one of his personal mantras. “Everything we do, we do with a purpose,” he said. “Everything we do is something we love or have passion about.”

How to Take Your Skills to the Streets
• Make a phone call. See if there is a need for your work. • Look for sensitivity training. This will help you and your colleagues learn how to treat those in need like humans. • Collaborate. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. See how you can help an existing program. • Be willing to organize and work with other barbers and stylists. • Do it for the good, not the glory. Remember, this isn’t a way to promote your business. It’s a way to help your neighbor.
