LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Do It for the ’Gram
I
’m nobody’s social media maven. In fact, I’m still learning the art of how, when and what to post on Instagram. I post when the mood strikes me, but I’m not as consistent as I should be. I grew up with social media being a way to connect with family and friends, not building a brand. When I was in college, Facebook had just rolled out. At the time, Myspace was the primary social media platform. No one had any idea how big Facebook would become, and Instagram wasn’t even thought of yet. Who knew that we’d become so reliant on these platforms to get our next hair inspiration? Truth be told, I got my hairstyle ideas from Hype Hair while sitting in the salon. Now, we have Instagram, where there are endless images of looks to scroll through. Even Hype Hair’s feed (@hypehairmag) is filled with a variety of styles from some of our favorite influencers. And chances are, when you’ve got a new hairstyle, you posted it on the ’Gram, too, right? I know I have! Because of these innovations, the culture of hair and beauty has changed dramatically. That’s why, in this edition, we are giving a shout out to our favorite social media mavens and acknowledging a few celebs who inspire us with their looks on and offline. Our cover girl and songbird, K. Michelle, is one of those hair chameleons who keeps us all on her toes. With 6.6 million followers on Instagram alone, it’s safe to say she’s someone to watch for hair and beauty inspiration. Be sure you check out our interview with her, and when you have a new look to show off, tag us at #hypehairmag on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Maybe we’ll feature you next on our social media pages!

PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Dear Readers,
M
ost of us have many responsibilities. You may be responsible for not only taking care of yourself but also children, a spouse, significant other, parents or other family members. As a provider, you may need to deal with extending emotional, spiritual and financial support. Even if you don’t have anyone else’s needs to contend with, your own needs might be incredibly intense. Having a number of things going on in your life may leave you feeling overwhelmed, and you might ask yourself, “How am I going to handle all of this?” When this happens, you may find it beneficial to remember that when you don’t know, God does. When I find myself in an overwhelming situation, I do my best to trust in Him and His ability to create Divine Order in any circumstance. Know that Divine Order is at work in your life and let go of worry, stress and fear. Instead of dwelling on the problem, consider focusing on your faith and being open and receptive to Christ and allowing that relationship to lift your consciousness so that a process can be revealed that can lead you straight to solutions. As things begin to fall in place, and you move into a better position in your journey, recognize the blessings both big and small. Give thanks for them and look forward to enjoying a life where Divine Order prevails and allows success and happiness to exist in all areas of your life experience.
Peace & Blessings,
Adrienne Moore Publisher

YouTube INFLUENCER-APPROVED HAIR CARE PRODUCTS It’s rare that I buy a product without reading the reviews or looking up videos of other people’s experiences with them. What can I say? I like to research before I commit. But thanks to influencers on YouTube, I have discovered a few items over the past year that I wouldn’t have otherwise picked up. Here are my five faves for natural hair. 1. ALL ABOUT CURLS HIGH DEFINITION GEL On the rare instances I rock a wash ‘n go, I found this stuff to be an absolute holy grail of gel. Great hold, no crunchy side effects and definition for days. 2. AS I AM JAMAICAN BLACK CASTOR OIL WATER When my hair is parched, this spray has quenched its thirst every single time. Not only does it infuse moisture with one spritz, but it even works on my human hair extensions and wig units. 3. AUNT JACKIE’S FRIZZ PATROL SETTING MOUSSE If you don’t have any mousse in your hairstyling regimen, you need to rethink everything. This mousse is great for flexi-rod sets and twistouts, plus it gives your strands tons of hydration.
4. LUSTER’S PINK SUPER MOISTURIZING CURL DEFINER
If you love shea butter and coconut oil, you’ll fall in love with this product. This gave me juicy, plump curls without the greasy product buildup.
3 5. THE MANE CHOICE PROCEED WITH CAUTION DANGEROUS LUSTER & SHINE ILLUMINATOR
Have you ever tried an oil sheen that makes your hair shiny and oily all at the same time? Well, don’t worry, this stuff doesn’t do any of that. You’ll get instant, absorbable moisture and out-ofthis-world shine!

VALENTINE’S DAY CREATE A SEXY NEW LOOK FOR YOUR SPECIAL DAY By Aissatou Josette
Photos by Jessica Felicio on Unsplash
It doesn’t matter if you’re preparing for a hot date for Valentine’s Day or a fun get-together for Galentine’s Day, we all like to try out new sexy hairstyles to fit the occasion. Switching things up a bit could mean stepping out of your comfort zone or trying a new styling method. We checked in with Hype Hair Editorial Consultant Aissatou Josette to answer a few of your style questions.
16 FEBRUARY 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM
QA QA QA QA
I have tight, naturally coily hair. I’m thinking about straightening my hair for Valentine’s Day. How can I safely do this? In order to safely straighten your hair, you want to make sure you use a stellar heat protectant. My favorites are in aerosol spray form; that way, it is applied to the hair, but it doesn’t re-wet the hair unnecessarily.
I’ve been rocking shoulder-length locs for a long time, but I haven’t been very adventurous with my styling. What recommendations would you give to style my hair for a special occasion? To achieve a special-occasion look, try styling your locs into an updo bun. You can also pull your locs from the nape of the neck into a high ponytail and put rods in the top for a curly pompadour look.
I’m going on a weekend getaway with my boyfriend and want to wear a wig. This would be my first time gluing a wig down for long-term wear. What products should I use and how do I remove the glue when I’m ready to change my look?
Photos by Jessica Felicio on Unsplash
To apply the glue, you want to buy professional wig glue. Apply it the edge of the hairline, lightly blowdry it until it’s tacky to the touch, lay the wig into position, and then tie it down with a scarf. If possible, sit under a dryer to ensure the glue is completely dry. To remove the glue without damaging the hair, apply glue remover or high-proof rubbing alcohol to the lace to loosen the adhesive
I want lots of romantic curls for my relaxed hair. What’s the best way to style my hair without causing heat damage? This type of styling is called wet styling. You’ll want to get some rollers—soft, hard or flexi—and section your hair into big sections. Then, roll your strands around each roller and allow them to dry overnight or underneath a dryer for a long-lasting curl. Adding mousse or spritz while setting your hair is also recommended.

HAIR Q&A
LOVE IS IN THE HAIR By Miko Branch
Naturally curly hair is naturally gorgeous and we’re madly in love with our manes. But how do we stop our lovely tresses from becoming matted messes? Miko Branch, CEO of award-winning haircare brand Miss Jessie’s, shares three top secrets to mastering perfect tresses. Come close and fall head over heels with your new ringlets!
A
Avoid washing your hair daily as it will dry your scalp and strands. Instead, cleanse your hair at the root, while massaging your scalp, once or twice a week. If you are active or use a lot of styling products or conditioners, cleanse your hair more often. Rinse out the shampoo with warm water. Also, steer clear of shampoos with sulfates and other drying chemicals. Curls thrive from the natural oils in your hair, so the last thing you want to do is strip them! Choosing quality curl cleansers is paramount to the integrity of your natural hair, and keeps your hair free from dirt and product build-up. You want a cleanser that has pure ingredients meant to improve the look, strength, and texture of hair.

Q
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET A TRIM—AND SHOULD IT BE CUT WET OR DRY?
A
Depending on the length of your hair, you should get a trim anywhere between every four to eight weeks. If your hair is damaged or broken, make an appointment even sooner. Always get a trim with your hair dry, since it’s less damaging to your ends. Stretched, wet curls will spring up once they’re completely dry. TIP: Schedule trims in advance, too. Getting regular trims can promote healthier, stronger, more vibrant hair. They can quickly add freshness to a hairstyle and enhance your curl pattern.
QA
HOW CAN I PREVENT SPLIT ENDS?
Courtesy of Miss Jessie’s
Ladies, we hate knotting, strand-splitting, dull, frizzy hair, too! Aside from getting regular trims, love on your curls with the right conditioner. When it comes to textured curls, conditioning is key, so never skip this important part. Choose a softening conditioner that is ultra-creamy, won’t weigh your hair down, and will leave your curls slick and smooth, like Miss Jessie’s Crème de la Crème. Detangle ever so gently with your fingers and a wide-tooth comb. Patience is a virtue, so don’t rush detangling. And, let the conditioner actually condition your hair for a few minutes before rinsing it out with cold water. Miss Jessie’s can be found in mass retailers nationwide and online at missjessies.com.

GREAT HAIR PRODUCTS
SALON PRO EXCLUSIVES 30 SEC® CELEBRATES YOU! Salon Pro Exclusives 30 Sec® Super Hair Bond Glue is celebrating its 25th Anniversary and continues to rejoice its place as the number-one hair bonding glue for quick weaves and wigs. Since launching in 1995, the latex-based Salon Pro Exclusives 30 Sec Super Hair Bond Glue has been the go-to favorite of consumers wanting to make a quick change to their hairstyles by adding wefts of hair or adhering and securing their wigs.
Remember The “Power System” – Glue It. Remove It. Shampoo It.
Shortly after the launch of the Salon Pro Exclusives 30 Sec® Super Hair Bond Glue, Universal Beauty Products, Inc.—the Glendale Heights, Illinois-based beauty products company—expanded the line to create the Power System which includes Super Hair Bond Glue, Hair Bond Remover, and Residue Remover Shampoo. Many consumers mistakenly think they can easily remove their glued-in styles by using baby oil, mineral oil or conditioner: This is false! The Super Hair Bond Remover is an essential part of the process and is specially formulated to help loosen the adhesive in the Super Hair Bond Glue. Following the safe removal of the Super Hair Bond Glue, it is imperative that you use the Glue Residue Removal Shampoo. This moisturizing shampoo helps to remove all traces of glue residue without stripping natural oils from the hair and scalp. Remember to “Glue it. Remove it. Shampoo it.” It’s that simple! The Salon Pro Exclusives 30 Sec® Power System is designed for the consumer who is looking for a hairstyle that will be worn for only one or two weeks. The consumer who is looking to wear a protective style longer can incorporate the the Quick Weave System. The Quick Weave System includes Weave Molding Gel, Weave Wonder Wrap and Super Hair Bond Glue. The Weave Molding Gel assists with “laying down” or molding the hair; the Weave Wonder Wrap acts as a protective barrier between the hair; and Super Hair Bond Glue. Stylists love this system because once they want to remove it, all they have to do is rinse their client’s hair in warm water and the style simply washes away. This method is also very popular among consumers who want to change up their look frequently without damaging their own hair or hairline.
Kicking Off the Campaign – Salon Pro 30 Sec® Celebrates 25 Years of Beauty
Salon Pro 30 Sec® will officially launch its 25th Anniversary campaign at the Bronner Brothers 2020 Winter Show in Atlanta. This is an opportunity to join in on the celebration and see live demonstrations on how to properly apply and remove lace wigs and weft hair. Stay abreast of the current hairstyles and view educational videos on YouTube, Facebook or Instagram @SalonPro30Sec.

POWER SYSTEM Application
To ensure proper application, please follow the following steps:
• Part the hair in the desired style that you want the hair to fall. • Ensure the length of the weft is equal to the length of the part in the location
in which you are applying.
• Carefully apply the Salon Pro Exclusives 30 Sec® Bonding Glue to the weft. • Apply the weft ¼” from the scalp. • Apply pressure to secure. • Continue to apply the wefts until you achieve the desired length or fullness. POWER SYSTEM Removal Process
Follow these instructions for proper removal:
• To properly remove and prevent breakage, use the Salon Pro Exclusives 30 Sec® Hair Bond Remover. • Apply a generous amount of Salon Pro Exclusives 30 Sec® Hair Bond Remover to all the areas the wefts are placed.
• Gently massage the remover into each weft. • DO NOT force the weft from the hair as this will cause breakage/damage. • Let sit and watch how effortlessly each weft slides from the hair. Salon Pro Exclusives 30 Sec® Residue Remover Shampoo • For best results and to remove ALL glue residue from the hair, apply Salon Pro Exclusives 30 Sec® Residue Remover Shampoo to formerly wefted areas.
Photo by Vonecia Carswell on Unsplash
• To ensure ALL traces of glue are out of the hair, use a small tooth comb to assist with removal. • Repeat as needed. NOTE: This shampoo WILL NOT remove hair wefts. DO NOT use the following to remove your hair wefts, as they will cause breakage and WILL NOT properly remove the weft.
• Petroleum Jelly • Mineral Oil • Oil Sheen • Baby Oil • Hair Conditioner

MICELLAR CLEANSER AND CONDITIONER We can all agree that when it comes to natural haircare, using a product line that’s free of sulfates, parabens and other harsh ingredients is the standard. After all, chemicals and natural hair are like oil and vinegar—they don’t mix. So, when navigating the natural haircare lane, discovering new products that meet the list of requirements is a surefire way to revamp or switch up our haircare regimens. And in this case, Mane ‘n Tail’s Micellar Shampoo and Conditioner does just that. With the shining ingredient being micellar water, the haircare giant may have just taken things to the next level. Micellar water is composed of molecules that attract dirt, sebum and other impurities in your hair. In turn, those impurities are gently washed away to leave your hair in a healthy, cleansed state. This product also takes the conditioning process a step further. While many of us count on the conditioning part of our cleansing routine to detangle our hair, the shampoo can be just as useful in this effort— eradicating knots and tangles with ease. What we also love about this micellar addition is that it leaves your hair moisturized, with a smooth and silky feel. And just like other offerings from the brand, the Micellar Shampoo and Conditioner are both infused with biotin. This vitamin helps to convert nutrients into energy that supports hair growth and fortifies strands while helping to keep your hair healthy and long. Whether you’re working with curly hair, straight hair or a kinky texture, this shampoo and conditioning duo detoxifies your scalp to restore your hair to its natural state. And if you need more nourishment, the conditioner can double as a leave-in conditioner.

KISS MAGNETIC LASH LINER & LASH By Tatayana Yomary
W
e all love wearing a set of lashes for a touch of glam, but it doesn’t come without risks. Many lashes require the use of bonding glue to keep the band of falsies close to the lash line. But with glue, the chance of losing a natural lash or two is highly likely. So when KISS stepped onto the scene with its take on the magnetic lash trend, we were immediately intrigued. The KISS Magnetic Lash Collection is just what you think it is. The brand uses a magnetic bond to keep your lashes in place. The application starts with the dermatologist-tested KISS iENVY Magnetic Eyeliner. It is designed to attract, hold and position the magnetic lashes onto your lash line. Simply apply as you would any eyeliner and wait for it to dry. Next, attach the Magnetic Eyeliner Lashes onto the eyeliner. The strip lashes come equipped with five, doublestrength magnets for a precise and secure application. With the magnetic liner, your lashes will stay in place without the need for touch-ups. No glue needed! Just Line, Lash and Done!
“
NO GLUE NEEDED! JUST LINE, LASH AND DONE!
And you won’t have to worry about these lashes flying away. They can last for up to 16 hours and are wind-resistant and smudge-proof! You might think that this is too good to be true, but it truly works. You’re also able to reuse these lashes over and over, which allows you to get more bang for your buck. Remember, most lashes can only be used a few times, but with the KISS Magnetic Collection, you can use them as often as you’d like. Best of all, you can choose from five lash styles—from feathery wispies to the super long falsies. The possibilities are endless. For easy and effortless glam, try the KISS Magnetic Lash Collection. 28 FEBRUARY 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM

TIPS FOR GROWING HEALTHY HAIR
DRY SCALP BE GONE Dealing with dry hair and scalp can be an uphill battle. From tackling an itchy scalp to getting rid of dandruff, it can easily seem like it takes a while to restore your hair and scalp’s health. While there are many reasons why dryness occurs, many lie within your haircare routine. Maybe your tresses are not getting enough moisture, or maybe your haircare products are stripping your hair of its natural oils. Wherever you land on the spectrum, it’s essential to add a nourishing haircare system into your regimen, like the As I Am Dry & Itchy Collection. Specially formulated with olive oil and tea tree oil, this collection works to hydrate and nourishes your hair and scalp while improving your detangling process. Its five products include the Olive & Tea Tree Oil CoWash, Olive & Tea Tree Oil Shampoo, Olive & Tea Tree Oil Treatment, Olive & Tea Tree Oil Leave-In Conditioner and the Olive & Tea Tree Oil Conditioner that work together to leave you with an itchfree scalp.
32 FEBRUARY 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM
1
While you may have only trusted a dry scalp shampoo and conditioning duo to treat your strands in the past, your mane may need more attention to truly counter the itchiness. Start by introducing a pre-poo or co-wash into your regimen with the As I Am Olive & Tea Tree Oil CoWash. This co-wash gives your coils and kinks more moisture while working to relieve scalp irritation associated with dandruff.

2
In the spirit of showing your strands some extra love, a conditioning treatment wouldn’t hurt. It’s standard to apply treatments after the wash process; however, the As the As I Am Olive & Tea Tree Oil Treatment should Treatment should come before shampooing. Simply work the treatment through your hair, making sure to saturate your strands from root to tip evenly. Wrap your strands with a heated wet towel or a clear shower cap and let it sit for 20 minutes. This treatment can also be used as a hot oil treatment. Just allow your body heat to nourish your hair to eliminate that pesky dry scalp. Once complete, there is no need to rinse.

Now you can work the the As I Am Olive & Tea Tree Oil Shampoo Shampoo onto your strands. Unlike other shampoos that leave your hair dry after removing dirt and grime from your mane, this gentle shampoo cleans and conditions and helps make it easy to remove tangles and knots. Gently massage the shampoo onto your scalp and through the length of your hair and rinse with warm water.
4
Once your hair is cleansed, the As I Am Olive & Tea Tree Oil Conditioner comes into play, working to strengthen and repair your hair while fighting dry and itchy scalp. Be sure to comb through your hair from root to tip so your strands can be coated evenly with conditioner. Let it sit for three to five minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.

To keep a dry hair from occurring, you’ll want to provide your hair with lasting moisture, and the As I Am Olive & Tea Tree Oil Leave-In Conditioner does just that. It helps to prepare your hair for styling while adding moisture and shine to your mane. It also helps to ease your combing process while improving your hair’s manageability. Follow these steps and you’ll be able to see desired results with continued use. Dry and itchy scalp is no match for this haircare system.

ALERT: HAIR CHEMICALS LINKED TO FIBROIDS & BREAST CANCER By Dr. Melanye Maclin-Carroll, M.D., Dermatologist
S
erious news regarding the use of hair chemicals continues to emerge and I must share it with you! Let me first begin by stating that I am not against chemical hair relaxers or dyes. I got my first relaxer at age 10 and my last one at age 30—a year after starting my hair research company and gaining knowledge about these chemicals’ potentially dangerous health links. Since 1999, I have studied thousands of African American hair loss cases, many of which were a result of chemical relaxers. However, it was interesting that many of these women were also suffering from uterine fibroids (non-cancerous
34 FEBRUARY 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM
growths). The fibroids cause longer and heavier monthly bleeding, which can result in having to take iron pills for anemia. In the 2009 Chris Rock film, Good Hair, I specifically gave expert advice about adverse hair issues from the use of chemical relaxers. For years, many have thought it was ridiculous for hair chemicals to get into our reproductive tract. However, the chemicals—especially the hydroxides in lye relaxers (sodium hydroxide) and no-lye relaxers, texturizers and kiddie perms (calcium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide)—can absorb and “burn” into your skin through the numerous pores, cuts and scratches on the scalp’s surface. These chemicals can not only damage

ASK DR. MACLIN
your hair roots, but they can also absorb into your scalp’s abundant blood supply and enter your bloodstream. This can result in your body producing hormone-disrupting chemicals affecting both your reproductive system and breasts. So when studies were published in 2011 linking chemical hair relaxers to early menses, uterine fibroids, infertility and early hysterectomies, I was not surprised as I had already suspected a potential link in the early 2000s.
Photo by Eric Nopanen & National Cancer Institute on Unsplash
But now, an even more severe health link has been confirmed. The National Institutes of Health performed an eight-year study of over 46,000 women of all races between the ages of 35–74 that linked chemical hair relaxers and dyes to breast cancer. African American women had an astounding 45 percent increased risk of breast cancer compared to other races. With this major new health link to breast cancer and reproductive issues, we must continue to sound the alarm and share this critical information. Early and constant exposure to these chemicals makes one more likely to be susceptible to hormone disruption. Given the more serious health links, we must be extra cautious. Therefore, it has been my ongoing passion to educate against the use of hair chemicals in girls under 18. If you are 18 or older and have no hormone health issues yet, but still desire to use hair chemicals, please protect your entire scalp with a petroleum base to reduce absorption or use natural alternatives. Continue to join me in helping to spread this critical, lifesaving information! Dr. Melanye Maclin is a licensed Hair Research Dermatologist. For info, visit www. drmaclin.com. LONG & STRONG
POWER PROTEINS By Tatayana Yomary
As much as we hate to admit it, our tresses are susceptible to damage. From dry, brittle hair to heat damage and breakage, damaged hair can be a pain to deal with—especially when you don’t have the right products on hand. While everyone’s mane is different, fragile tresses require special attention to be restored to their former glory. But don’t worry, ApHogee’s specialty treatments can turn things around.
treatment will get your hair back to a healthy state in no time.
When hair is severely damaged from bleach, ammonia, perms, relaxers or heat styling, two treatments can get to the root of the problem: the ApHogee Two-Step Protein Treatment or Hair Strengthening Kit.
Perfect for those who prefer a quick process, the strengthening kit is useful on even the most damaged hair. The kit also makes treatment easy—it works in minutes and lasts through multiple shampoos. Depending on the hair type and care regimen, benefits can last for two to three weeks per application. Best of all, no dryer is required to reap all of the benefits.
38 FEBRUARY 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM
Ultimately, as the hair grows following the damaging event, you may find you can switch to a convenient, one-step product—such as ApHogee’s Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor— to maintain your hair’s condition. Formulated with a concentrated blend of keratin amino acids, botanical oils, and vitamins, the Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor does wonders to restore strength and softness to weakened hair.

The Two-Step Protein Treatment is a specialty treatment that bonds to the damaged sections of the cuticle to repair the hair. Formulated with magnesium and modified proteins, these ingredients bond to the hair with the application of heat to reduce breakage. This is highly recommended for hair that is over-bleached, dry and brittle or too fine or weak to take a perm or relaxer. The ApHogee Two-Step Protein Treatment process should be done once every four to six weeks, especially if you continue to bleach, relax, perm or use high heat. This
The ApHogee Hair Strengthening Kit is a convenient way to help stop hair breakage for weeks and to prepare hair for any chemical service. This easy-to-apply, two-part system strengthens with protein and then softens with moisturizers and emollients.

URBAN HYDRATION’S PSYCHE TERRY DISHES ON HOW TO BE A BEAUTY BOSS By Jessica DeVault Hale
Anyone who has ever tried an Urban Hydration product knows that their hair and skin will get an unbeatable dose of moisture that will have you buying the products by the gallon. And for every product you buy, a portion of the proceeds goes toward clean drinking water in Kenya with their Water is Life (WIL) charity. The story behind this all-natural brand is well documented and impressive, but the brains behind the cult favorite is nothing short of empowering, as well. Psyche Terry, CEO and founder of the Dallasbased company, is a force to be reckoned with in the industry and is proving that as she builds a natural beauty empire with her husband and co-owner, Vontoba Terry. We caught up with the naturalista and beauty boss to learn more about the growth of her business, the best practices she lives by and what’s next for Urban Hydration. HYPE HAIR: Urban Hydration can be found in so many major retailers, including Sally, Walmart, Target and others. What was the process like for you to break into retail? PSYCHE: It was daunting, being a mom and a wife and still under 40, and being a minority, being a woman.
42 FEBRUARY 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM
So I had several different things going on, but I used each of those elements and owned them. I determined what’s best about being a woman and being young. I used each of those things to help me pitch the company and pitch our story even better and even more lively to retail buyers. I’m closer to my purchasing community. By being a mom, I have products for me, my kids and my husband. By being a woman, I’m a user of the products. Those helped me be more relevant. It goes from “Why me” to “Why not me?” It’s just those real-life examples of what pushed me forward, even over our larger majority-owned competitors. I look at those guys like they are usually not using their own products. They’re doing their best to copy and mimic minority-owned brands. The fact that I’m not just a brand producer, but a user of the product, helped me make something much more competitive and compelling to the buyer. And even when I got my products on the shelves, it didn’t work as well as I thought it would. It was really a 10-year process. I’m a person that grinds and hacks. I figure it out and try again if I fall down. HH: That’s really persistent! PSYCHE: We created a household brand. The full and only point to our products is that I grew up using Vaseline as hair grease. Once I realized that Vaseline wasn’t the best protectant for my curls or my hair, I knew I had to make a change for myself. And for the love I had for myself, the love I had for my family—my family had to make a change. That’s what I’ve been pushing for, and that’s why I have longevity in the brand. We’re not just creating a good-smelling product. We’re creating a legacy product that our grandkids will know of. And they will have long, strong, healthy hair. And we’ll change the game. It’s up to me to make a difference. HH: Speaking of creating a legacy, a portion of your sales goes to the WIL initiative. What sparked that interest to give back to this specific need? PSYCHE: You will not see me or anyone on our team be flashy. We’re not flashy, because we we’re raised by the community. It’s important that we give back to the community. The community didn’t have to provide me water. But as a community, we can give that one single resource that we all take advantage of every day. And the fact that our product is about hydration and dry skin and dry hair, we thought
it made sense to make that the one thing that we focus our efforts on. Kenya, Africa, is just really struggling with water. It was a no-brainer. HH: What advice would you have for aspiring entrepreneurs? Psyche: Be nice. I didn’t forget about my fierceness, because that’s who I am as a Black woman, but I can also be kind. That’s one of the first and most awesome things that women need to realize. Kindness follows you. People tend to honor you and favor you when you follow that behavior. Unfortunately, that’s a minority right now. There aren’t a lot of people choosing honor and just being nice, and I think you stand out when you do that. HH: Urban Hydration was at the forefront of the “clean beauty” movement in the industry. What can we expect to see from your brand in 2020? PSYCHE: We are not playing about our community. If you can brush our teeth with it, polish your nails with it, anything as a consumer that I have to use that’s not right for me, our company is looking at how to make it cleaner, better and more natural. If your body consumes it, it can be a part of our portfolio. It’s all about bringing natural resources to our community. HH: There are many female entrepreneurs who are trying to juggle spouses, kids, demanding hustles and working towards their dreams. You make it seem easy. How do you do it? PSYCHE: I worked backward and determined what type of person I wanted to be when all of this is done. When I leave this earth, what kind of legacy do I want to leave for people to remember? But by thinking in the end, first, it allowed me to start choosing my behaviors now differently. Making sure I’m working out every day, making sure I’m treating people well every day, and when I’m here, I’m present. I’m not partially in and out of conversations. With my kids, we’re eating breakfast and dinner together as many days of the week as we can. When the ball is in my hand, that ball is in my hand. I try my best not to have so many balls, but every ball gets as much of me as it possibly can. It gives me peace, knowing that I’m doing my best. I can say I’m too busy for any of the things I’m doing, but because they are important to me and pouring back into me, that’s what’s giving me balance and solitude.

this shampoo does a great job of cleansing your mane without the harsh feel. The Kinky-Curly Come Clean Shampoo’s new and improved formula includes phytic acid, which is a natural cleaning agent that removes hard water minerals such as calcium and magnesium from your hair. Characterized as an all-natural replacement for EDTA, which is derived from soy and corn, it also helps to soften hard water, rinse cleaner, and prevent hard-water buildup on your hair. The sulfate-free, balanced formula also includes Mandarin orange extract and sea kelp. It is perfect for dry, damaged hair and gentle enough for everyday use. The perfect shampoo for naturalistas, this offering is super gentle and leaves your hair in mint condition. In other words, it’s an absolute dream for your coily strands. While most shampoos on the market contain harsh ingredients, this pick gets the job done without all the unnecessary extras. Not to mention, its exclusive blend of organic plant extracts works to maintain your mane’s proper moisture balance. For naturals who struggle with maintaining moisture, this shampoo can help get your strands back on track.

A DIVA TAKES FLIGHT
In her 13 years of nursing, Cindy experienced firsthand the absence of products designed for women who were dealing with medical conditions that resulted in hair loss, dryness and weakness. She felt these women were often marginalized and neglected by mass media and was determined to change that. Unsatisfied in her career as a nurse, Cindy made the audacious decision to pursue an occupation in the beauty industry. With fierce persistence, she opened her very first salon, Shades Of U, in 2004. With her compassion and efficient business model, she quickly made an impact on her community; but owning a salon simply wasn’t enough.
Cindy wanted her customers to be able to take home that same effective experience. So in 2007, she introduced her haircare line, Diva By Cindy. The products focus on scalp health, hair restoration and damage repair, and are accessible to the average woman in a world of high-priced natural products. Best of all, the alcohol-free formulations work well for relaxed or natural styles, and all hair types. Her products can now be found at Army & Air Force Exchange Service, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Walmart.com, Harris Teeter, Giant, and Giant Eagle. Plus, her Stimulating Hair Growth system launched in Sally’s Beauty Supply in January 2020. In 2018, she made history by opening her first storefront in the BWI airport. After pivotal success, she opened the first vending machine to dispense hair products at BWI in early 2019. This year, another Diva By Cindy storefront is set to open at Concourse AB. The next time TSA throws out your prized hair products, have no fear—Cindy has got you covered on multiple fronts. She sells full-sized and TSA-friendly travel sizes.

Registered Nurse-turned-business owner Cindy Tawiah grew up in Ghana, West Africa, as the daughter of a professor and a diplomat. When she was only 16 years old, her chemistry teacher taught her how to make beauty products in class. From there, she went on to become a nurse, salon owner, author and mentor—but it wasn’t easy.
She has also continued to grow her salon business. After years of managing two salons, Cindy embarked on a new course of action, focusing all of her time and resources on her hair care line and helping victims of domestic violence and homelessness. Ten percent of the proceeds from Diva By Cindy products are allocated to help women. She holds a “Day of Beauty” twice a year with access to life coaching sessions, facials, massages and, of course, hairstyling. Building self-esteem is at the core mission of Diva By Cindy. While describing her higher purpose for creating this business, she said, “There are Black women out there really suffering from trauma. The goal is not just to give women their hair back or hair that they love, but also to give them a sense of purpose and where they belong.”

It is clear that Cindy is not just a business owner: she is a humanitarian, a survivor and a force to be reckoned with. More importantly, she is a woman striving to share the fruits of her labor, one product at a time. Learn more at DivaByCindy.com.

he availability of natural beauty products created by African American women is at an exciting high. Today, consumers can connect with their favorite natural brands at popular department stores or by ordering online.
Rochelle Graham-Campbell, co-founder and CEO of Alikay Naturals, is a pioneer in the natural hair market and a pillar making power moves among other entrepreneurs in the beauty brands market. In just 10 years, she’s grown her brand from a YouTube channel to an international, multi-million-dollar business.
“I want to teach people how to build the foundation for strong businesses,” she said. “People only like focusing on branding their business and the pretty aesthetics when they haven’t done the behind-the-scenes work first. Scaling is part of your business growth. If you are not scaling, then you’re suffocating. In 90 Days to C.E.O., I discuss the hustle of running a successful business, self-care and purpose beyond profit. Check out Rochelle’s latest podcasts, order her book and see what she is up to on her website rochellegraham.co.
“I was heading to law school—that was my plan after college,” said Rochelle. “My life just happened to shift. One of the things that I look back on is how God has ordered my steps to offer advice. My first 400 videos on YouTube, I did for free. This was way before YouTube was paying people for videos. I did it because I enjoy creating solutions for entrepreneurship and for healthy hair with the use of Alikay Naturals.” Alikay Naturals is a premium all-natural and organic hair care, bath and body products brand designed to moisturize dry hair and skin while promoting faster and longer hair growth. In February, the brand hosted a launch event for the release of its highly-anticipated Lemongrass Style collection that is now available at Target and Target.com. “I am so excited to have partnered with Target for the collection,” said Rochelle. “Since we first premiered the collection in February, the store has continued to share our commitment to celebrating healthy hair for all textures, while making our products more accessible for consumers.” On February 11, Rochelle will release her eagerlyawaited book, 90 Days to C.E.O.: A Guide To Avoid Business Pitfalls And Unlock The Secrets Of Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship. In the book, she shares her journey—from server to beauty founder—and breaks down the mindset behind her success.

THE COLORING BOOK
GET READY FOR BIG, BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL HAIR COLORS
Pre-lightening the hair is essential for the best results with any vivid hair color. You just cannot get those bold, bright colors without starting from a lighter shade. Fortunately, Bigen has developed a lightening system that quickly lifts up to eight levels using only 20 volume developer. The Bigen Powder Lightener and 20 Volume Cream Developer System is a big hit with both consumers and professional stylists. Bigen Powder Lightener is a professional grade “dust-free” lightener designed to work with Bigen 20 Volume Cream Developer. No need for high volume, damaging developers for lift. It’s easy to mix with a 1:2 ratio for measurement. When used together, the system has been proven to be less damaging to the hair. Pairing this system with one of Bigen’s semipermanent Vivid Shade hair colors will give great holding and conditioning color results for up to eight or more shampoos with less damaging effects. Bigen Vivid Shades Semi-Permanent Hair Color features ten beautiful shades with no ammonia, no alcohol, no PPDs and no lead acetate—and no heat is required. This hair color collection provides bold, vivid colors—from the richest reds to the boldest blues—that hold with long-lasting results. Bigen Vivid Shades is made with an oil-rich, emulsion formula that does not drip or run. With a blend of oils that nourishes and conditions while you color, it actually fortifies your hair against breakage with use. In laboratory studies, hair treated with 54 FEBRUARY 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM
Bigen’s semi-permanent color required more tensile strength (the force required to cause hair to break) when compared to untreated hair after six uses. With Bigen Vivid Shades Semi Permanent Hair Color, the more you color, the better your protection against hair breakage. So get ready to show your true colors with a new Vivid Shade on your hair. Get creative and apply two or more shades to your hair for a rainbow, mermaid or balayage effect for your own signature look or try an ombré effect for dreads and braids. Whatever your style, using Bigen’s Powder Lightening System combined with Bigen Vivid Shades is sure to get you noticed.

STEP 1: Shampoo Use the Creme of Nature Pure Honey Moisturizing Dry Defense Shampoo, followed by Creme of Nature Pure Honey Moisturizing Dry Defense Conditioner.
STEP 2: Section Your Hair Using a rattail comb, part the hair in a semi-circle to separate the top part of your hair from the sides.
STEP 3: Make A Top Knot Use your wide-tooth comb to comb through your hair from root to tip and place in a top knot using a ponytail holder.
STEP 4: Add Product Apply the Creme of Nature Pure Honey Curl Activator to both sections of your damp hair and get ready to style.
STEP 5: Create Texture Starting with your tapered sides, use your hair sponge to create your twists by working in a circular motion all around your head. Be sure to only go in one direction, or you will unravel what you’ve started.
STEP 6: Top Knot Twist
Take your hair down from the ponytail holder and spritz with water if you need to. Using the tail end of the rattail comb, part hair into the desired size and begin your two-strand twists.
STEP 7: Add More Texture After you’ve finished two-strand twisting your hair, add the perm rods to the ends of your twists. Then, let your hair air dry or sit under a hooded dryer for one hour. Allow twists to dry completely before untwisting.
STEP 8: Seal Your Style After your hair has completely dried and before you unravel your twists, add a few spritzes of the Creme of Nature Pure Honey Shine Mist to the palm of your hands and gently pat onto the tapered sides of your hair and two-strand twists for extra shine.
FINAL STEP: Shape and Go After you’ve unraveled your twists, use your hair pick to gently lift your hair from the root to give your hair some height. Now, you are ready to love the night away! FEBRUARY 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM 57

STAR POINTS
Stephenetta (isis) Harmon
A
ctress Chanté Bowser is living her best curl life. Her natural hair is healthy, flourishing, and getting screen time.
That may not sound groundbreaking, but just a decade ago, naturalistas serving kinks on television were an anomaly. Now, we’re no longer holding out for the token curl girl with the perfect rod set or length to give us some sort of exoticized representation.
she’s excited that they are part of everyday conversation and culture. She recalls a role on Lethal Weapon, in which episode director Sally Richardson called for her “hair curly and out—the same way she wore it in the audition. That was completely awesome.” Here, we chat about her transitions—from law to acting and straight to curly—and her regimen for getting the best curls of her life.
This holds especially true for the actress who transitioned while working in corporate America as a licensed attorney. “Fortunately, I worked for a Black woman, so it was empowering,” says Chanté.
HYPE HAIR: We’re loving your crown! CHANTÉ BOWSER: Thank you! This is the longest my hair has ever been in its life. I love having big hair and being able to do big puffs!
Going from the boardroom to the big screen, the rising star has landed roles on such shows as CBS’ Criminal Minds and Fox’s Lee Daniel’s Star. This past holiday season, she co-starred in Lifetime’s Christmas Love Letter, and we’ve seen her on the big screen alongside Taraji P. Henson in Best of Enemies and in John Wynn’s Mirror Mirror.
HH: When did you transition? CHANTÉ: Around 2009. I didn’t do the big chop. I weaved it up until it got to a point where it was comfortable for me to wear it out.
While she doesn’t get to rock her crown in every role, 60 FEBRUARY 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM
HH: How did that play out for you working in corporate America? CHANTÉ: Fortunately for me, I had an African American SVP who also started transitioning. Actually, all of the

Black women [in the office] started transitioning. It was empowering! HH: When did you first fall in love with your hair? CHANTÉ: The moment I started seeing how embracing my own curls influenced other people to embrace theirs. I have three cousins that have also gone natural. My mom went natural. And to see whatever your curl was - from a one all the way up to a four—we could all have that same conversation. HH: So how did you transition into acting? CHANTÉ: I always wanted to act. After I graduated, it took like maybe a year for me to get the nerve up to go and do it. And then I did! HH: Do you wear your hair natural or straight for auditions? CHANTÉ: Both. If I audition and my hair was curly, I’ll ask if they want me to keep it curly or straight. HH: What do you do when you need to go straight for a role? CHANTÉ: There’s an amazing Dominican shop in Atlanta. And then there is an amazing one here in LA.
HH: What products do you use? CHANTÉ: When I wear my hair curly, my staples are the SheaMoisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil collection and Taliah Waajid. Whenever there is a sale, I gather ten different conditioners and mix them all together. I don’t know which one works the best, but I just mix them all together and it’s been pretty awesome! You’re probably going to laugh, but I also use this one old school product—Fantasia IC Liquid Mousse. If I don’t have my liquid mousse, I am freaking out. HH: Any other must-haves? CHANTÉ: I use a mixture of ten different oils every time I wash my hair. HH: Can we get into these oils? CHANTÉ: Grapeseed, coconut, olive, noni, jojoba, almond, and Jamaican black castor oils—which is like the Holy grail—and Mango oil. And I throw cocoa butter in there, too. I just melt it down. I have a little pot, like the one you use for chocolate. I just feel like the whole mixture is freaking awesome. HH: What’s your secret to length retention? CHANTÉ: Moisture! You can’t let it dry out, or it’ll break.
Photos by Dana Patrick
HH: A Dominican blowout can be heavy. How do you protect your hair and get your curls to bounce back? CHANTÉ: I am very particular about who I go to, and
they also were very conscious of that, about making sure that the heat that they were putting on my hair wasn’t going to take out the curl—a lot of deep conditioning and a lot of heat protectant.
FEBRUARY 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM 61
HH: Do stylists know how to do your hair? CHANTÉ: It really depends on who the stylist is on set. Like Best of Enemies, the hair and makeup people were Black, so they know the texture. HH: What about when they don’t? CHANTÉ: I have 3C/4A hair, so I do a braid-out in order to keep the curls consistent. I have a wig that matches my hair that I’ll sometimes jump in and out of, especially if the curl doesn’t match when we filmed. It gives me a little bit more flexibility. HH: How did you find that perfect wig match? Was it created, or did you just luck out? CHANTÉ: Both! My bestie, she’s an Aveda master colorist. She’s the one who actually helped me transition in D.C. And, by the grace of God, she ended up moving out here to LA. She was working with a wig line and she found one that matched my hair [texture]. She custom-colored it to match my hair, so I can switch out and nobody realizes it. The curl is slightly softer than mine because once you put color on, the curl is going to loosen. But I just do a braid-out on it and then I perm-rod the ends with a really small rod. Nobody can tell the difference unless I’m like, “Hey, I’m wearing my wig today.” HH: What advice would you give someone transitioning to acting from another career? CHANTÉ: Go to school. Learn the craft and how to execute and get [directors] in a place where they can trust you. Especially when you start later. You’ve got to work two, three times harder. I did Lesly Kahn [classes] out in LA. Then I went to UCLA. That was a gamechanger. I had to get my training resume, my acting education tight so that the directors and the producers could trust me opposite a Taraji, to trust me opposite a Sam Rockwell. HH: Do you see yourself continuing to practice law in the future? CHANTÉ: I totally plan to keep my license up. I’m a good lawyer, and I’m a great actor, so why not share what I’ve been given? And since I’m California-licensed, it’s perfect because it’s the hotbed of entertainment. As far as acting, the ultimate goal is to be a series regular on an amazing, well-written show, because I love this thing. I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t do it. HH: What do you want people to take away from your journey? CHANTÉ: Just being happy with yourself, forgiving yourself along the journey, and embracing who you are and just letting your natural beauty shine through. Our hair, our skin, all of us, everything about us is amazing and we should never allow anyone to ever make us feel less than. Do not allow anybody to take you off of the path that God has for you. 62 FEBRUARY 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM

R
&B powerhouse K. Michelle has been serving up [hair] drama since she hit the scene with daring blue tresses. And, like her voice, it was bold, colorful and dramatic.
The artwork for her album puts her penchant for glam switch-ups on display. Lensed by Derek Blanks, she poses it up in one of the photographer’s signature alter-ego shoots. As an angel, she is draped in a long, sheer white floral embroidered gown rocking rooted deep burgundy hair.
She rocked rainbow pastels years before they were a thing and went through a red phase that gave us crimson goals, along with a myriad of other colors, textures and lengths. She even shaved it all off. Her switchup game was so strong that we often joked that she changed hair like she changed clothes. It turns out we weren’t far from the truth.
As the monster, her hair is replaced with a red, spikey jeweled crown, while riding her own back. It’s meant to call attention to the inner monster in all of us.
“I don’t wear them but one time!” she says of her wig collection during a phone interview just weeks ahead of the release of her fifth full-length album, All Humans Are Monsters. She is in the process of moving to Miami and maybe just realized her collection could stock her own store. “I have rows and rows,” she says. “When they showed me how much money I spent on hair, it was crazy. I was spending, honestly, like over $200,000 in wigs.” She says she is going to either start washing to re-wear or just donating them. But from our conversation, odds are that she is just going to keep buying more. “Like some people need fresh new J’s, I always think I need a fresh new wig,” she laughs. It might also have something to do with the fact she doesn’t do her own hair. “I get my hair done every day, but right now, I have micro links. That’s the best thing for me right now,” she says of the extensions which are similar to the fusion method but don’t use any heat or glue. Instead, the extensions are applied via a metal cylinder. “All I have to do is blow it out and curl it. At least I can do a little bump!”
66 FEBRUARY 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM
“I have it, you have it. We all do,” she says. “We all are the villains in somebody’s story. In my son’s story, I’m a hero. But if you ask one of my old friends, I’m a monster. It’s like that with everybody. So, we have to stop being so judgmental of each other when no one is perfect.” Of course, K. Michelle’s monster had to be “cute,” as she puts it, but says it reflects the fire in her. “I think my monster has a short fuse; it doesn’t really tolerate a lot.” But, as she noted on a recent Instagram post announcing the album, “We mature with the damage, not with the years.” And, even, while serving her best face and ever-changing looks, K. Michelle has been hella transparent about her battles with personal and public monsters. We’ve watched her shake the table on reality TV, turn up on social media, and consistently call out those who’ve used, abused and mistreated her—even when no one wanted to hear or believe her. The same holds true as she works to have her once-glorified derriere reduced to its God-given size. The “Supahood” singer went on a media blitz in 2018, including appearances on The Dr. Oz Show and The Steve Harvey Show, sharing how getting silicone injections to follow a trend ultimately caused her severe health problems. “Don’t do trends to your body,” she has said in interviews. She even allowed cameras to film the first painful procedure, which removed about 40 percent of the injections.
It’s been four months since her latest surgery to remove more of the silicone that is embedded into her tissue. “I still have two more to go.” While many of our fave celebrities have extolled the virtues of getting their backsides plumped up, K. Michelle warns the likelihood of complications is extremely high.
“People just aren’t talking about it because they are ashamed. Some people’s bodies might not react—but those chances are very slim,” says. “Most are going to have some reaction; maybe not as strong as mine and other girls, but maybe you’ll have a cold for the rest of your life.” As for K. Michelle, at one point, she couldn’t even walk. The process has changed how she views beauty today. “I look at natural beauty and just wish I could go back to that,” she reveals. “I look at girls and I’m like, you don’t even know that you being natural is just the most beautiful thing ever.” But, K. Michelle is passionate about healing—and getting others to do the same. So much so that she has teamed with Jesse Collins to produce a show on Lifetime to help ten women reverse their silicone procedures. “It’s called Thick and Sick. That’s my opportunity to give back. Everybody doesn’t have $200,000 in liquid cash to spare to do that. Insurance doesn’t cover it.” She also wants to protect young girls and women— influenced by social media and mainstream imaging— from making the same mistakes she did. “People gotta see,” she says. “Their favorite artists can tell them everything, but I think really seeing what it does, and not just hearing about it, is gonna save a lot of lives.” And though it’s monster-themed, recording her album brought about some healing. “It’s been a journey. I didn’t want to sing every day—and I was forcing myself,” she says. “It wasn’t until I started to heal more mentally, and I started to physically heal more. And then I finally fell in the zone, and the music sounded amazing because it kind of reflected that I was healing.” It is the first project off of her newly founded label No Color, No Sound Records imprint through Entertainment One. Because “when it comes to music, no one can take that from me,” she says. And, like her mane magic, she keeps us guessing on what to expect next—including that much-talked-about country album, which she says is still very much in the works. Last month, she announced a new partnership combining her Atlanta-based restaurant, Puff and
Petals, with another restaurant, Pearl Restaurant & Lounge, to create a weekly pop-up experience dubbed “Puff Meets Pearl.” She has also resumed fertility treatments, which were a large part of her storyline on the sixth season of Love & Hip Hop Hollywood last fall. She is going through another round of in-vitro fertilization with hopes of implanting at least one embryo into a surrogate this spring. “This will be my last chance to do IVF,” she shares. “Fertility, that’s something that you just take for granted as a woman. I’m learning to accept it and God’s will. If I have to adopt or if I have to use a donor egg, whatever I might have to do.” Accepting who she is and where she is now has been an integral part of her path toward happiness. “It’s not a certain amount of money. I want to smile every day and be at peace,” she says. And for those in the middle of their own journeys, she says, focus on the good and stop feeding the monsters in their lives. “I would just say to Black women, we need each other. Even the ones that you don’t love or like, we got to come together as a team,” she adds. “We are the most unloved, overlooked and stolen-from individuals on the planet. We don’t have room to fight each other.” All Humans Are Monsters is out now and available on all major music platforms.

here’s nothing like a beautiful afro or blunt cut to really draw attention to your hair. Sharp lines and expert cutting precision inspires Hairstylist Norm Wright. In his latest photoshoot, the stylist pays homage to the basic tenants of hair design.
“This collection is called Afrodisiac, an exploration into the multidimensionality of afro hair,” Norm tells Hype Hair. “Every time I shoot a new collection, I revert back to what I’ve learned from my mentor, Jean Baptiste Mazella.”
“Multi leveling, sharp lines and provocative shapes are fueling me right now, and I hope I have honored my craft.”

MEN’S CORNER
ELLAGANT HAIR TAKING MEN’S HAIR WEAVES TO THE NEXT LEVEL By Stephenetta (isis) Harmon
Over the past few years, man weaves have become a game-changer for Black men. The stigma of rocking extensions has slowly been erased by access to quality hair, believable textures and self-esteem boosting fresh fades to create realistic wave looks. Man weaves have also evolved into big business within the Black haircare market. Tim Starks, the founder of Ellagant Hair, has worked to be at the forefront of this movement with his extensions brand focused solely on men’s hair units. He got his start in 2016 as the CMO for Lyrical Hair extensions manufacturing company. In his role, he traveled to the company’s manufacturing warehouse in China to learn the ins and out of the industry. “I was over there for almost two months training,” Tim shares. “They taught me everything—how they ventilate the hair, where they source the hair—all the insights. It’s a very secretive industry.” While there, he also noted that hair options for Black men were lacking. “It was terrible, crappy nappy hair,” he reveals. Either the hair quality was extremely questionable or the textures were unbelievable. “There was none of us [Black folks] sitting at the table to tell them what they were doing wrong.” So, he convinced Lyrical Hair to start manufacturing hair units using virgin Remy hair in different kinky textures. Now, he distributes his own brand directly from the manufacturer. There are five different units made with five different bases using full lace, full clear polyurethane, or a combination of the two. All of the units are 8”x10” crown pieces made with 6-inch hair in different wave textures, starting from a tighter 4mm wave to a looser 12mm wave. It took him one-and-a-half years to get the process and quality to his satisfaction. “The hair is steam processed, and each piece takes about six weeks to make,” Tim shares. But it was worth it. “We now produce about 80 to 90 percent of the units on the market,” he says, noting that the market for
78 FEBRUARY 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM
men’s weaves has gone from barely there to booming. “It’s the number-one product in China to produce right now in the beauty industry.” He cautions, however, that with high demand comes the potential for bad quality. To guarantee high quality, of course, he says, to visit his site. But, even if you don’t, he recommends working with vendors who are located in the states, so you have a point of contact in case something is wrong with the hair. As the market floods with new hair alternatives for men, Tim is proud to be part of a movement helping give men back their confidence and helping beauty professionals be able to benefit in the business. “The response has been overwhelming,” he says. “It’s changed lives—not only financially for those installing them, but for the brothers when they get these units and how their confidence is built up.” Tim also prides himself on giving back to the community. Through his work with Lyrical Hair, the company donates wigs to various charitable efforts, including 650 wigs this past Christmas to the American Cancer Society to help women and men regain their sense of self during cancer treatment. “We’re not just selling hair, we’re changing lives.” For more info, visit ellaganthair.com.

Features a full polyurethane base so you can cut without damaging the base. It is clear, so it looks the most realistic, lasts longer and stays on tighter than lace.
THIN SKIN
A lighter, thinner version of Skin meant for one-time use.
AUSTRALIA AFRO WAVE
Features a one-and-one-half inch polyurethane base along the circumference with french lace in the top crown area. You only need to use adhesive along the perimeter to set it in place. It is long-wearing like the Skin, plus it’s breathable.
FULL FRENCH LACE AFRO WAVE This has a full French lace base.
Q6 AFRO WAVE
The Quantum 6 unit has a clear polyurethane side and back with a lace top and front. You get the security of the sides and back. It has breathability that helps protect the lace. This unit also provides a natural hairline.
