editor’s letter COLOR ME BEAUTIFUL

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF COLOR ON OUR PSCYHOLOGY

T

here’s a scene in the film The Devil Wears Prada where Andy Sachs, the naïve intern, questions the powerful magazine editor Miranda Priestly about the shades of blue. What indeed was the big deal about a blue sweater, when all shades looked the same, she quipped. Miranda’s response was epic, as she schooled the blue-sweater clad intern on how impactful that shade of blue—cerulean, to be exact—was. “That blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs, and it’s sort of comical how you think you made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing a sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.” Her iconic response was also eye-opening. While reading her for filth, she educated the intern on the omnipotent influence of the fashion industry–and spoke volumes about the power of color. There’s a reason why people want to wear bright colors in the summer, and richer, moodier tones in the winter. Color has a way of capturing our mood and setting the tone for the season. It’s one of the reasons why I could never dedicate myself to one specific hair color. Every time I had convinced myself that I would stick to classic brown, my heart would yearn for a honey blonde. And when I’d go blonde, I’d fantasize about being a redhead. What I have learned throughout these years of indecisiveness is that I shouldn’t dye my own hair. Being natural presents its own set of challenges and my hair is especially susceptible to over manipulation. Instead, I rely on wigs and weaves to achieve the color I’m seeking. Then, I can change my mind as often as I’d like. But, for those who like to experiment on their own tresses, we have tons of tips and product recommendations this issue to help you take your color game to the next level. So, when you nail that perfect shade, tag us on Instagram at #hypehairmag. Maybe we’ll share your photo!

DEAR READERS

onsidering everything we deal with on a day-to-day, it can be all too easy to get caught up in what comes next and be so forward-focused that we don’t take nearly enough time to live in the now. Although we should dedicate a significant amount of our time planning for and anticipating the future, I find it helpful to take strategic pauses as we move through our life experience and really be in the present. Appreciate the blessings you have today. Doing this can be really rewarding because you have a chance to feel the joy of the moment. Allowing yourself to experience this can not only lift your spirit, but also serve as a motivating force to propel you forward with a more positive mindset toward whatever comes next. Now, if what you are experiencing in the present is not positive or serving you well, bear in mind that taking a strategic pause can be just as beneficial. Taking the time to be still can give you a chance to evaluate the situation and consider ways to get out of this space, as opposed to moving through your life experience while in a state of crisis. In the stillness, you have the opportunity to recognize that God is God and give Him a chance to intercede and guide you to a better place. Wherever we are in life, know that each day we have is a gift to be grateful for, whether things are the most wonderful or the most challenging you’ve faced. Taking into account that God is in, and with you, provides the means to be victorious on this day and during anything you have yet to experience.

Peace & Blessings,

editor’s picks HOT NEW COLOR PRODUCTS High Color Maintenance The easiest way to upgrade your look is by integrating color. During the warmer months, I tend to rock lighter hues—think blondes and browns but hate the potential damage they may cause. While in the fall, I prefer darker tones. Every now and then, I have a little fun and rock a playful color like green or purple! Luckily, there is a product for each of those needs. Here are my five favs. 1. ROUX RESTORATIVE HAIR MASQUE

Once I’ve colored and re-colored my hair, I need to follow that up with a conditioner that’s going to rehydrate my tresses. This one is a winner!

2. CURLS UNLEASHED COLOR BLAST TEMPORARY HAIR MAKEUP

If you want a crazy color for the weekend, this product is for you. Experiment with color and wash it out in time for Monday! 3. CREME OF NATURE PURE HONEY HYDRATING COLOR BOOST

If you’re going to color your hair, color and moisturize at the same time. This product achieves both! 4. DNA ESSENCE SEMI-PERMANENT HAIR COLOR

Everything isn’t meant to last forever, and that includes hair color. Rock out with a bold hue and let it wash away in time with this product. 5. HENNA HAIR COLOR

So when you decide to ditch the ammonia and peroxide, it may feel like you’re limiting your color options. However, I find that Henna is a great way to get the color you want without unnecessary chemicals.

hot picks MANE ‘N TAIL

COLOR PROTECT SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER By Tatayana Yomary

Like natural strands, color-treated hair deserves the proper amount of TLC—but even more so. While a standard shampoo and conditioner may seem like the best bet, many formulas are not made with ingredients that help to brighten your hair color and keep it vibrant. So when it comes to caring for your color-treated mane the right way, look for a cleansing and conditioning duo that can preserve the quality of your color and nourish your strands for strong and healthy hair. Mane ‘n Tail Color Protect Shampoo and Color Protect Conditioner definitely fit the bill. The shampoo and conditioner nourishes and hydrates your hair, and they also help protect your strands from excess damage, which helps keep it in great condition for your future color treatments. The color-protecting duo is infused with a blend of essential oils including hemp, sunflower, olive, soybean, and sweet almond oils along with cocoa butter, a blend of proteins, vitamins, herbal extracts, and keratin. Not to mention, this pair is also formulated with a UV filter to protect your strands from UV rays and increase the life of your hair color.

And while most shampoos work to remove dirt, oil and impurities from your hair by stripping your strands, this offering provides gentle cleansing to keep your hair’s natural oils in place. As a result, hair is softer, smoother and boasts a natural shine. And of course, it helps to promote growth for a healthy head of hair. One of the biggest concerns for those who rock color-treated hair is it resulting in weakened strands from the bleach. This duo helps to keep fragility and split ends at bay. So, instead of spacing out your hair color treatments for months on end, you can feel confident color-treating your hair without the risk of color fading or damage. Mane ‘n Tail has been in the hair game for quite some time, and products like this are the reason why.

hot picks APHOGEE

APHOGEE SHEA-PRO LEAVE-IN MOISTURIZER By Tatayana Yomary

Are you tired of dealing with dry hair? We completely get it! From giving your hair a dull, stiff appearance to leaving your strands completely dry at the ends, dry hair woes are real. Not to mention that when your strands are at their driest, they are more prone to split ends and breakage. That’s why locking in moisture is so important for hair health. Your first course of action may be to add a deep conditioner into your routine. But, why stop there when you can also add something that you can use on a daily basis or as a heat treatment. It’s time to discover the wonders of the ApHogee Shea Pro Leave-In Moisturizer. ApHogee has come in major clutch over the years to give all hair types a boost in hydration, and this leave-in conditioner is no exception. Unlike other leave-in conditioners that can only be used on damp strands, you can apply this product to your hair before and after styling to give your hair instant moisture. Formulated with shea butter, sunflower seed oil, vegetable protein, and botanical oils, this rich hair cream moisturizes your hair from root to tip helping to lock in moisture and protect your hair from everyday styling and the elements. Some products only give you hydration that lasts for a few hours, but this cream provides moisture that lasts all day long. Designed to turn dry hair into soft and manageable tresses, there is no need to worry about any hair breakage.

When you’re ready to style your tresses, apply a small amount of hair cream evenly throughout your hair. Once your mane is fully saturated, you can style as you’d like. If you find that your hair is thirsty for more hydration, apply the cream to damp strands and cover for 30 minutes with a shower or heated cap. When your hair is dry, you can style as normal. Ready to defeat dry hair once and for all? Pick up a bottle of the ApHogee Shea Pro Leave-In Moisturizer and take the stress out of moisturizing!

tips for growing healthy hair AS I AM

STARTING AT THE ROOT By Tatayana Yomary

If there is one thing we can all agree on when it comes to natural hair, it is that every hair journey is different. While some can see success with hair growth in a few months to a year, others have to follow a strict routine and wait a few years for them to find the regimen. And since natural hair can be fragile, retaining length and strengthening your tresses are of utmost importance. Finding the right products to complement your routine is key for reaching your natural hair dreams. That’s why we always make sure to keep a few picks from the As I Am Long & Luxe line in our haircare routine. Part of maintaining a healthy scalp is to give your tresses moisture on a daily basis. Since natural hair is prone to dryness, the proper measures need to be taken. The As I Am Scalp Serum helps to revive the scalp to stimulate growth and hydrate your scalp. Made with nutrients such as biotin, phytosterols, aloe vera, pomegranate juice, pomegranate butter, hydrolyzed lupine protein, and saw palmetto, you can look forward to strengthening your hair with every drop. Using twice daily, apply and rub the serum to your scalp to boost hydration and improve your scalp health. You also want to ensure you are loving on your edges. A major way that you can damage your hair is by using edge control products that are not formulated with moisturizing ingredients. In many cases, edge control pomades and gels are made with alcohol, which

can break off your edges. One of the indicators of a healthy mane is a full set of edges. Keep your edges intact with the As I Am Long & Luxe GroEdges. Designed to give your edges a nice hold without any flaking, you can count on your baby hairs staying in place all day long. With these two staples, your hair is sure to flourish and grow healthily.

to fade. If you wouldn’t go to the beach or park without protecting your skin, don’t go without protecting your strands.

HOW TO KEEP COLORTREATED HAIR PROTECTED WITH RUCKER ROOTS

This protectant is infused with shea butter, avocado oil, castor oil, and vegetable root oils to ensure your tresses are protected and nourished.

If you’re a beauty who likes to play around with color, spring is the perfect time to try new hues in your hair. While the perfect color can make you feel even more stunning, maintaining the health of your hair while adding color, can sometimes be a bit difficult. To keep your hair strong and healthy, we suggest using trying straight-fromthe-garden haircare with Rucker Roots.

HYDRATE WITH RUCKER ROOTS DAILY LEAVE-IN We’ve said it before, and we will say it again, moisture is major when it comes to keeping your hair healthy and strong. Since the coloring process can strip your hair of its moisture and nutrients, it is important you replenish the vitamin loss.

KEEP IT SAFE WITH RUCKER ROOTS LEAVE-IN HEAT PROTECTANT When showing off a new color, we highly suggest you protect your delicate strands. Whether for protecting from heat styling or the sun, Rucker Roots Leave-In Heat Protectant has got you covered. You may be used to using a heat protectant before heat styling. However, you can also use this product as a guard against harmful UV rays that dry out hair and cause your vibrant color

That is why we recommend Rucker Roots Daily Leave-In for our beauties with colored hair. It is infused with biotin and sunflower seed oil, making it the perfect product to moisturize and detangle dry strands, which prevents breakage without weighing your hair down. Rucker Roots has a full line of products that are amazing for color-treated hair. Check them out at your Target, Sally Beauty, Macys.com and your local beauty supply stores.

ASK DR MACLIN

7 TIPS FOR SAFELY USING CHEMICAL HAIR DYES By Dr. Melanye Maclin-Carroll, M.D. Many of us often desire to change our look by changing our hair color, especially when we need to cover gray hair. There are a variety of chemical-based dyes, ranging from a mild rinse to h1arsher permanent dyes. The milder the dye, the faster the color is washed out from the hair with less damage. However, semi-permanent and permanent dyes use ammonia and other developer chemicals, which allow further penetration through the hair strand. Although the color lasts through many washes, they are more damaging to your hair and can cause severe health issues. Regardless, if using home-based hair dyes or getting your hair done by a professional stylist is the route you choose to take, please follow these tips to reduce damage.

1

ALLERGY TEST!

If this is your first time using a chemical hair dye, always do a test using a small area of hair. Reactions can be mild (think: redness and itchiness) or more severe (think: breathing problems). If either occurs, consult with a doctor immediately and avoid future use of all chemical hair dyes. Consider natural dyes such as henna, vegetable or other safer options

2

DON’T OVER DYE!

Most often, especially if you are covering gray, you may desire to dye once a month or even every two weeks. However, frequent use of permanent dyes, which is typically used for gray, can weaken your hair strands and create a higher risk of severe skin and scalp irritation. Consider limiting exposure to every six to eight weeks and using safer hair color sprays in between dyeing. Additionally, try switching to color rinses that have milder chemicals.

AVOID GOING FROM DARK TO SUPER LIGHT!

3

MOISTURIZE BEFORE & AFTER!

Because chemical dyes alter the cuticle and cortex of your hair strands, your hair can become extremely dehydrated. Hair can become brittle, dull and coarser, overall. Saturate your hair with coconut or olive oil, which is my favorite to apply to hair the night before coloring. Additionally, use a moisturizing conditioner after coloring and a moisturizer a few times a week to reduce breakage.

6

PROTECT YOUR SCALP!

Before applying any form of chemical hair dye, protect your entire scalp with a petroleum base. This reduces the risk of chemicals absorbing into the scalp. If they absorb into your scalp and get into the blood supply, severe health side effects can occur. Make sure your scalp is washed thoroughly after dyeing.

The more extreme the hair color change, the higher the risk of damage. Your hair strands become stripped trying to remove darker color resulting in severe dryness, brittleness, and breakage.

5

AVOID BREAST CANCER RISK!

A new NIH research study links the frequent use of semi-permanent and permanent hair dyes to breast cancer. There was a greater than 40% increase in African American women. It is believed that the darker hair dyes have harsher chemicals. There have been other cancers associated with darker hair dyes, including cancer of the bladder and lymphoma. Also, there is more risk if they absorb into the scalp and get in blood vessels, which can cause hormone disruption and cancers.

7

NOURISH HAIR FROM WITHIN!

Because hair grows from the roots deep within your scalp, the chemical hair dyes can damage them. Help keep them healthy with the use of an internal proprietary blend of nutrients found in dermatologistdeveloped BellaNutri supplement. Hair will retain more moisture and grow stronger, thicker and overall healthier while using hair dyes.

...The beautiful texture. The way in which you can sculpt the hair and make it look dynamic from every angle. Black hair is beautiful, and the sky is the limit for the possibilities when styling.

—YUSEF WILLIAMS

BLACK HAIR IS HISTORY. It has sparked groundbreaking inventions and tools. I guarantee you that every Black woman has a defining moment about it. Heck, many of us are still learning to love it.

The fact that we can be the same person and look like two different people. There is no other culture that can do it. There is no other hair type that can do it. We could literally have a 2-inch afro that could turn into 12 inches down our back. If that’s not magic, I don’t know what is. It’s in our hair, our beauty, our skin.

BLACK HAIR IS ENVIED. Oftentimes, the same people who judge it are the ones copying it and trying to claim our magic as their own. And, throughout all of this, one thing holds true:

— KIM KIMBLE

So, let’s take a moment to bask in the glow of our kinks, curls and coils as just a few of our fave celeb hairstylists share just why we should be celebrating the wonders of our rooted tresses. This is why our Black hair is magic.

Being able to manipulate hair to do whatever you want it to do. A Black woman with naturally curly hair can braid it. Twist it, Bantu knot it. Ponytail it. Finger wave it. She can blow it out. Roller set it. Twist it. Set it. Rod it. All of these beautiful things. That right there is Black hair magic.

— TYM WALLACE

‘‘

‘‘

It grows towards the heavens and creates a literal crown. We are born with fullness and volume that other cultures strive to create. And, it can be sculpted into any shape and style desired.

Definitely the diversity. We can do anything with our hair. We can go from a 4C hair texture and straighten it out, press it out, blow it out and it’s super silky. The texture and shapes that we can create with our hair are incredible. I think that we have the best hair on the planet. We’ve been blessed. God didn’t play with Black folks

‘‘

And it is art. Creativity unleashed in the hands of our grandmothers, mothers, aunties, sisters, friends and the hairstylists who bring their (and our) dreamed up creations to life every day.

What’s magic is that we can do so much. We have beautiful textures and all different types of things we can do with our hair. Braids, locs, curls, straight pieces, wigs, ponytails. God blessed us with hair that’s flexible. And, of course, the magic comes from within when you’re wearing it.

‘‘

Black Hair is magic.

‘‘

BLACK HAIR IS POLITICAL. There are regulations in schools, work and the military on how we braid, cut and rock it. And, of course, there are WTF moments of discrimination and even laws and legal crusades to protect it.

PERFECT RESULTS COCKTAILS By Tatayana Yomary

Like it or not, there is no one set of rules when it comes to caring for natural hair. While some naturals can watch their hair flourish with just a nourishing shampoo, conditioner and leavein conditioner, others need to add additional products to their haircare regimen to get their desired results. This includes adding a prepoo, curl products or other treatments into the mix. There is also something way more practical that can give your hair the TLC it needs: cocktailing! A great way to provide your strands with extra moisture and improve the overall health of your mane, cocktailing is a natural hair go-to. And if you’re ready to jump on board, the Perfect Results Cocktails can help you get the job done. The brand’s Perfect Results Cocktail takes basic oil cocktailing oil to the next level. It comes with a reusable cocktail shaker and six hair oil mixes that you can count on to give your mane the attention it deserves. With Bahama Mama (argan, jojoba and almond oils), Mudslide (tea tree and coconut oils), Martini (olive and avocado oils), Piña Colada (coconut and cocoa butter oils), Long Island (Jamaican black castor oil), and Frozen Daiquiri (tea tree and hemp oils), you are sure to find the perfect mix to suit your needs. Also, cocktailing comes in handy to revamp your current haircare products. Add more moisture benefits to your favorite leave-in or mix into your next deep conditioning treatment. Small changes go a long way with this easy cocktailing system.

While many products claim to give your strands longlasting moisture, natural shine and strength strand by strand, we all know that it’s not always the case. And this is where Perfect Results Cocktails comes in to pick up the slack.

natural hair buys KINKY CURLY FAST DRY ROLLERS By Tatayana Yomary As much as you may love styling your mane into gorgeous curls, using Flexi and perm rods for heat-free styling can be time-consuming. Having to leave your rod set in overnight or sitting under a hooded dryer can seem like it takes forever, especially when you want to rock a curly style for the day. Don’t get me wrong. Those methods are great for protecting your strands, but wouldn’t it be great if there were a way to speed up the process? Thankfully, that is exactly what Kinky Curly is bringing to the table. The brand’s Fast Dry Rollers are designed to dry your hair in a fraction of the time. Naturalistas can achieve defined, thick curls with the innovative vented rollers that allow greater airflow and produce silky-smooth results. They are made with recyclable plastic, which is great

for your hair and won’t cause any damage during the drying process Kinky Curly Fast Dry Rollers have also redefined the meaning of a curly mane. They come in three different sizes—1 ¾-inch, 2 ¼-inch, and 2 ½ -inch—to help you achieve any size curl you want. And, just like how you use a styling lotion or mouse to set your hair, these dry rollers work great when paired with Kinky Curly’s Fast Dry Foam or Swift Set Lotion. All you need to do is your normal roller set your hair and allow your hair to air dry. If you’re running late, simply place your hair under a hooded dryer to speed up the process. the coloring book BIGEN

GET BOLD THIS SPRING IT’S TIME FOR BIG, BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL HAIR COLORS Bold hair color has become more mainstream than ever. It’s not shocking anymore to see vivid pink, purple, blue or red hair colors in the workplace on women and men of all age groups—from teens to seniors. People are using color with different hair textures from natural, straight or curly to create looks that turn heads. If you want in on this trend—especially with summer in full swing—here are some tips that can help you get the results you want. Pre-lightening the hair is essential for the best results with any vivid hair color. You cannot get those bold, bright colors without starting from a lighter shade. Fortunately, Bigen has developed a lightening system that quickly lifts up to eight levels using only 20 volume developer. The Bigen Powder Lightener and 20 Volume Cream Developer System is a big hit—not only with consumers but with professional stylists as well. Bigen Powder Lightener is a professional grade “Dust Free” lightener designed to work with Bigen 20 Volume Cream Developer. No need for high volume, damaging developers for lift. It’s easy to mix with a 1-to-2 ratio for measurement. Bigen Powder Lightener, when used with Bigen 20 Volume Cream Developer, has been proven to be less damaging to the hair.

PHOTO BY MALCOLM GARRET FROM PEXELS

This season, show your true colors with a new Vivid Shade on your hair. Get creative and apply two or more shades to your hair for a rainbow, mermaid or balayage effect for your signature look, and let’s not forget an ombré effect for locs and braids. Whatever your style, using Bigen’s Powder Lightening system combined with Bigen Vivid Shades will get you noticed.

Pairing this system with one of Bigen’s semipermanent Vivid Shade hair colors can give you great holding and conditioning color results for up to eight or more shampoos with less damaging effects. The collection features 10 vibrant and long-lasting shades—from the richest reds to the boldest blues—with no ammonia, no alcohol, no PPD’s, no lead acetate and without the drip or run. The oil-rich emulsion formula nourishes and conditions while you color, fortifying your hair against breakage. In laboratory studies, hair treated with Bigen semipermanent hair colors required more tensile strength (the force required to cause hair to break) when compared to untreated hair after six uses. So, the more you color, the better your protection against hair breakage.

6 WOMEN WHO HOLD HISTORY-MAKING PATENTS By Stephenetta (isis) Harmon

M

ost of us are familiar with the adage “necessity is the mother of invention”, and this saying is all too true when it comes to caring for our kinks, curls and coils. Since before the days of Madam C.J. Walker, we have heard inspiring stories of women creating homemade concoctions in their kitchens and on the job to help with everything from hair growth and moisturizing to styling and protecting. What is even more remarkable is that even through the hardships of slavery, Jim Crow, and today’s less visible—but still very much real— tenets of racial inequality, many African Americans have managed to become great inventors and scientists, including in the hair department.

CEATA LASH Ceata is the first Black woman to hold not one, but two patents for a natural hair accessory. In 2013, she invented the Puff Cuff, the only hair clamp/cuff on the market for thick, textured hair. The cuff has thin, rounded and widely spaced teeth to securely hold hair up without pulling, tugging or getting caught on curls.

In honor of Women’s History Month, we salute these women who have changed the hair industry with their own inventions and have gone on to hold history-making patents in haircare.

CHRISTINA JENKINS

GWEN JIMMERE Gwen made history in 2015 as the first Black woman to hold a patent for a natural hair product. In 2013, she founded the haircare line, Naturalicious. She went on to create the Moroccan Rhassoul 5-in-1 Clay Treatment that combines a detoxifying cleanser, conditioner, detangler, deep conditioner and leave-in all in one bottle. The time-saving product is the first of its kind made especially for natural hair.

In 1952, Christina Jenkins received a patent for her hair weaving process that laid the groundwork for modern-day hair weaves. Christina’s HairWeev technique involved sewing wefts of hair onto a net before being placed on a client’s braided hair. While hair weaving wasn’t necessarily a new concept at the time, sewing it into the hair rather than pinning onto the scalp was revolutionary. Born in Louisiana in 1920, the Leland College graduate worked at a wig manufacturing company where she learned how to secure wigs and hairpieces. During this time, she became employed at a wig manufacturing company where she learned how to secure wigs and hairpieces. Christina later moved with her husband to Ohio where they opened Christina’s HairWeev to not only capitalize on this innovation but to teach it to others, as well.

Black Hairstory BLACK HAIRITAGE MADAM C.J. WALKER The beauty and hair pioneer is perhaps the most wellknown Black woman when it comes to hair history. Born Sarah Breedlove, she became the first self-made woman millionaire in America through her hair and beauty company, Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company. She first created her own line of Black haircare products to address her personal hair loss issues, growing it into a national empire with more than 200 beauty colleges. While she, herself, did not patent products, Walker's company was the holder of several—including one for a metal comb from a man who had supplied combs to Madam Walker during her lifetime.

MARJORIE STEWART JOYNER LYDA NEWMAN Born in 1898, Marjorie Stewart Joyner was the first Black woman to hold a hair patent. The granddaughter of a slave owner and a slave, she received an A.B. from Molar Beauty School in Chicago, where she met and eventually began working for Madam C.J. Walker, including serving as national supervisor all 200 beauty colleges. In 1928, while searching for an easier way to straighten natural hair, she invented a permanent wave machine that wrapped the hair in rods above the person's head and "cooked" them to set the hair. The popular method was groundbreaking in that it allowed hairstyles to last several days and worked to both straighten curly hair and curl straight hair. Her invention was eventually assigned to Madam Walker's company.

The Ohio native was an inventor and hairdresser who created a new style of hairbrush that allowed it to be taken apart for cleaning ease. In 1889, she received a patent for her design in New York at the age of 14. The hairbrush included evenly spaced rows of synthetic bristles, with open slots to guide debris away from the hair into a recessed compartment, and a back that could be opened at the touch of a button for cleaning out the compartment.

hair forecast COLOR TRENDS

COLORING OUTSIDE OF THE LINES By Stephenetta (isis) Harmon

B

lack women and hair color has become a trend of its own. More and more of us are literally hitting up the crayon box to pick out new colors to satisfy our next hair fix. We are lifting and bleaching to get once seemingly forbidden colors. We are donning lace front installs, as well as clipping in colored curls and spraying on dyes to bring our color dreams to life. We can now paint on color dye gels like hair masques that not only give us vibrant colors but also help define our natural kinks, curls and coils. Yasss to hair versatility! “That’s what makes it all fun, different,” says Keya Neal, founder of Kolour Kulture and the Texture Vs. Race Movement. “I see a lot more Black women entertaining color now than ever before. I love to see us being more open to different tones.” She says this is especially true for women who have natural hair. “Because they can do it without causing as much harm to their hair and causing as much sensitivity.” And we can wear it all. When we were told Black women couldn’t wear blonde, celebs like Mary J. Blige proved otherwise. Chaka Khan made red a thing. Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj pushed through with candy greens and oranges. And rainbow hair continues to trend on such celebrities as Cardi B., Winnie Harlow, and Megan Thee Stallion. “Black people, we come in so many shades, so we can play with many more colors,” says Dereq C, cut and color specialist. “We can actually choose from the whole color book.” That is especially important in this new age of instant gratification and endless Instagram feeds that have left us with short attention spans on our hair choices. We want instant changeups to match our moods. We want to match our clothes. “Women are going from one extreme to the next, and wigs allow us to switch up as much as we want,” says Keya. But the experts also advise us to tone it down when we make color choices. At least for everyday slay. “What I like is seeing us embrace more of our natural hues, living in safer places for color,” says Keya, who is an educator and board-certified haircolorist with the American Board of Certified Haircolorist.

You don’t have to be a real-life animé doll on your way to your 9 to 5. Really. (Unless your job is actually cosplaying!) But, with so many temporary options at your fingertips, feel free to spice it up for special occasions or performances.

BLONDES “Blonde is always in—even in the wintertime,” shares Dereq. “But I noticed a lot of Black women are still scared of blonde—especially women of darker complexions. They still sit in my chair and say, ‘Oh no, I can’t wear blonde.’ Who told you you couldn’t wear blonde? I’m trying to debunk that myth. My thing is all about complimenting you and skin tone, your eye color and also your personality.” “Dark-skinned women, stop believing you’re too dark for blonde!” says Keya. “You can wear any color as long as it is the right temperature for your skin.”

COPPERS This is one of the most popular colors women ask for, especially when they are first trying out hair color. It is also the easiest color to achieve as people with dark hair have the most orange tones in their hair and will naturally lighten to that color before getting to blonde. “We’re getting ready to go into spring and people are starting to come into the salon and ask to be lighter,” says Dereq. “We are going to start seeing more colors naturally outside, so people naturally start to lighten up.”

REDS Reds have their own magic when it comes to hair color. Like lippies, “anyone can wear red,” says Keya. This is because red is “the only color on the color wheel that can be cool or warm,” says Dereq. “It can be more violet-based or have an orangey, copper base. No other color on the color wheel can be both cool and warm.” We just have to find our perfect match, adds Keya. “It’s about understanding the undertone of your skin and finding the right tone.”

FT-Color Trends.indd 48

2/20/20 6:32 PM

GREYS The silvery hue is on a comeback for women who are already going grey as they are opting to let nature take its course. “I have several clients doing that grow out process, and it’s so beautiful,” says Keya. But if you aren’t naturally grey, Keya advises to leave this color in the crayon box. Only “15 percent of the world” can safely achieve the color she says. “The rest of us are striving for something that is inevitably going to cause our hair harm trying to get something we naturally can’t have and probably are not ever going to get,” she explains. “In order to get that true grey that is void of warmth— without it looking blonde—you have to lift that hair past being light. It has to be almost flattened, and that’s a very hard place to live when you are coming from levels two, three and four (think natural black and brown hair). So we damage the hair, causing breakage and harm, and we alter the curl pattern.”

RAINBOWS Top celeb stylists and experts continue to put over-thetop and neon colors on the ditch list for 2020. “There is an overload of this bubble gum type of look,” says Dereq about the kaleidoscope of colors many celebs and trend-seekers have been rocking. “I think it’s time for something new.” Celeb hairstylist Tym Wallace, who styles up such divas as Taraji P. Henson and Zendaya, advises us to take notes from stars like Cardi B. “If you pay attention, she only wears this colorful hair when she’s performing. When she is on the carpet or makes an appearance, she’s toned down. The colors are more natural.” Don’t be afraid to play with pastels, but more “on the icier, cooler side,” says celeb hairstylist Kim Kimble, who is behind manes of such celebs like Beyoncé and our cover star, Garcelle Beauvais.

BALAYAGE This coloring technique has become the go-to for color play. “What it looks like is the colors are seamlessly fading into each other,” Dereq explains. “The roots are usually darker, and then it fades into the lighter colors, so it looks more organic instead of stripe-like,” shares Dereq. “This will give more of a naturally sunkissed, grown-out organic look.”

HAIR GURU | CONTENT CREATOR | COLLEGE GRADUATE When Re’biana Symone went to college, she had no idea that after graduating she would become a YouTube influencer Yet, the grad-turned-entrepreneur built a following from the ground up and was able to venture into the world of hair and beauty on her own terms. Her full-bodied hairstyles have quickly gained a cult following, and now she is taking the “Internets” by storm, one review and hair slay at a time! Hype Hair chatted with the vlogger to learn how she got started, and what she’s working on in 2020.

HYPE HAIR: How did you get started in vlogging? RE’BIANA: My Pop-Pop gave me a hand-me-down camera of his, a Handycam, to be exact. It wasn’t the best quality, but for someone who didn’t have the budget for a high-quality camera, I made it work. With that camera, I did this very cheesy beauty blogger tag. It was the worst quality ever. I’m very embarrassed by the video, and yes, it has been deleted off of my channel! I edited the video on my Windows laptop at the time, and I remember the editing software being the most horrible one I have experienced. The video was uploaded in 2013. There was no plan, no goal, just nothing! Then I left YouTube. That was just a test run. But I randomly got back into my channel when I applied to be a hair ambassador for a company. [The hair company] gave me the opportunity to strengthen my channel when my subscriber count was extremely low. In fact, all I had was my name and a YouTube channel with zero subscribers. I am very thankful for the owner of this hair company because if it wasn’t for her giving me the chance with literally no experience or background, I honestly don’t think that I would even be creating content about hair. When working with the brand, my views and subscriber count was still low. I took another break from it because I was living the college life, and just got stuck in the moment of being a college student. However, I got into a car accident where my car was totaled and caused me to move back home. During that time home, I needed something to occupy my time, so I started fresh with my channel. I went into my emails for YouTube and saw brands were emailing me, which were mostly synthetic wig brands, and my video views started picking up heavy once this content was uploaded. By the time I was going back to school, it started to become a business. During my last three semesters of college is when my YouTube channel really grew, and it has been flourishing since.

HH: How would you describe your signature style? RE’BIANA: My subscribers know that I am the channel of volume. I love big, fluff y, voluminous hair! I always tell hair companies to send four to five bundles with a frontal because you can never have too much hair. My signature style would have to be a deep side part, voluminous and curly—and the length must range between 26 and 30 inches. However, if I don’t feel like being bothered with hair, I love the shoulder-length messy look, with a middle part. HH: How does it feel to have thousands of followers relying on you for honest product reviews and tutorials? RE’BIANA: It honestly feels great. I know that my reviews are 100% honest. I have no reason to lie about hair; it’s just hair. I’m happy that my subscribers trust me with these products because they’re spending their hard-earned money with these brands because of the statements that I make. Although there are some people that comment with things like, “She’s a liar. This is a scam,” I kindly respond back to them, stating that I have no reason to lie because it’s just not that deep. Also, I never delete bad comments under the videos that I post. I leave them open for everyone to tell their experience with the company so that it can be helpful to others wanting to purchase the hair. HH: What does a typical day look like for you as a vlogger? RE’BIANA: To be honest, YouTubers do not film videos every day. Well, at least I don’t. If there is a YouTuber out there producing content every day, I commend you. Please teach me because it takes a lot of dedication to do it. Filming day starts with the previous day. I must prep wigs, which includes bleaching knots and the hair to blonde or dying hair, but it depends on what look I’m going for. Some wigs are left in their natural color, and then I just bleach the knots. Most of the time, this process is filmed for the video. I set my wigs out on my balcony to dry as much as possible overnight. Before bed, I make sure that I CHARGE MY CAMERA. There have been multiple occasions where I have gotten

Blogger Buzz.indd 50

all dolled up to film, and I turn on my camera, and it’s literally on 2%. I also make sure that my filming room is clean and ready to go for the next morning. I can’t film when there’s junk everywhere, my vibe will be off. The next morning I have to wake up by 8:30 to 9:30 pm to have enough time to film all of the videos and still have time to edit and post one that day at a reasonable time. I don’t know why I put this stress on myself! I spend maybe an hour doing my makeup for the video. Then I start to set up the lighting and make sure my background looks good. But it still isn’t time to film! I must pick out different shirts to wear for each video to make it look like I filmed on different days. Filming a video usually takes an hour or more depending on the type. Between each video, I charge up my camera again and try to add onto my makeup so I can appear to have a different look. I know it’s crazy, but this is part of the process. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that I get on social media to take videos and pictures, to basically hype up the upcoming video. I should be done at about 4 pm and now I’m pretty exhausted and usually will go take a nap. Later, I wake up to go edit for the video to be out before 9pm. I try not to post later than that. HH: What are two of your favorite hair maintenance and styling products? RE’BIANA: To be honest, I don’t use products in my hair much. I love the natural luster of human hair! Sometimes when you put too much product in your hair, it weighs it down and causes you to do more washing and conditioning than normal. However, for under my wigs, I keep my hair braided down in cornrows, and I have been using the Wild Growth Oil. It has really been thickening and growing my natural hair under my wigs, so I highly recommend this product. For baby hairs, I highly recommend the Style Factor styling gel. I really love this product, and it doesn’t make my baby hairs white or flake up, either. HH: What are your professional goals for 2020? RE’BIANA: I have been wanting to connect with my

subscribers on a deeper level, and I have been working on creating a podcast for 2020. My idea stemmed from wanting to do girl talk videos on YouTube, but I don’t think that is the safest place for girl talk. So, I will be creating a podcast. I am very excited about my upcoming project because I really enjoy the excitement of building up a platform from the ground up. I also plan to come out with my own hair accessories, such as wig glue, edge control, etc. So, cheers to that! For everyone wishing to create a YouTube channel, podcast, hair business, or whatever it is, the only person that’s stopping you from officially launching it is you. Just start!

JONATHAN WRIGHT By Stephenetta (isis) Harmon

R

ising hairstylist Jonathan Wright is on a mission to leave his mark on the beauty industry. He may be young, but he’s been on his grind. At 19, he was already dressing clients for red carpets. Four years later, he’s gained renown for his hairstyling and wig techniques on such celebs as Megan Thee Stallion, Sza, Blac Chyna, and more.

JONATHAN: I love making women look beautiful. Even when I was dressing a woman, I was already doing their hair in my mind. So, when I was a wardrobe stylist, in my mind I was already doing their hair and seeing [mentally] what the finished look was supposed to be. Also transforming women and seeing their reactions from their transformation is what motivates me to keep going.

When we meet, Jonathan has just wrapped up a successful boss-up panel and meet-and-greet that had fans lined up for an hour to snap a quick selfie with him. He takes his time with each one—stopping to adjust the ladies’ hair and hug it up with fellas.

HH: You’ve styled celebs like Megan Thee Stallion, Sza and Blac Chyna. How do you come up with their looks? JONATHAN: I’m not just a wardrobe stylist or just a hairstylist. I’m a visionary. I see animated characters [of my clients in my mind]. I can just see what will spice up their look, you know. With Megan—and all of my celebrities—I feel like they’re artists. They have to give different looks. They don’t even like changing their hair, but Megan, I would change her hair every day.

I get a warm “Hey Freeenn” before he goes back to flashing smiles for the camera. He is also prepping for a 12-city tour that kicked off in Los Angeles at the end of February and will make stops in such cities as Atlanta, DC, Chicago and New York before closing out in April back home in Dallas. Here, he shares his vision for transforming women, tips for a flawless install—and the biggest mistake we’re making with our lace fronts. HYPE HAIR: You started off as a fashion stylist and then got into hair. How did those two industries connect for you?

52 MARCH 2020 - HYPEHAIR.COM

Stylist Showcase.indd 52

You see how many times I was changing Megan’s hair? She has very long hair, very good hair underneath and edges are intact. People lose their hair from messing up trying to take their wigs off. You have to know how to take your wig off. HH: So, how do I keep my edges intact? JONATHAN: With the proper take-off and also with the proper coverage when you’re laying the cap. When I do my clients, no hair is out. Also, when I do take the wig off, it’s so easy. That’s how you keep your edges—you have to know

2/20/20 8:07 PM

HH: Tell us about this tour. JONATHAN: The Wright Way Tour. I don’t want people to feel like I’m limited to doing just celebrities’ hair. I cater to everybody. So, I am traveling to show my wig techniques and teach some of my skills. Also, I’m going to be interacting with my supporters.

how to take the wig off properly with the right amount of the alcohol or oil or something in that nature of a wig remover and just protect your edges. Put the oils, moisturize, let it set and there you go. HH: Everyone is rocking lace fronts right now. What is the most common fail that you see? JONATHAN: Plucking. If a person is not framing a wig towards their head shape, it just looks like a wig. Now, you just got a mop sitting on your head. HH: What are some tips for a flawless install? JONATHAN: Plucking! [Laughs] Pluck the wig good at your hairline so it matches your face shape. Also, Making sure that you are thoroughly flat-ironing it out and making sure it’s very sleek if it’s a straight unit. Don’t just throw the wig on. Make sure you take your time doing it. Even if it’s not 100 percent right, you know, it should still look presentable. And when you lay your lace, make sure you put your headband or lace band to lay it and just hold it while you style it. HH: Since you specialize in wigs, do you have any favorite hair brands? JONATHAN: I love Dhair Boutique. If you want your hair to look really naturally curly, they have some of the best hair ever. And Kendra’s Boutique. HH: Do you focus on anything else besides wigs? JONATHAN: I focus on natural hair. I make sure all my clients have healthy hair. I do everything overall, but I specialize with wigs because that’s what I love. It’s actually giving a person a full transformation. HH: Are you licensed? JONATHAN: Yes, I am licensed. HH: What are some things that you want to see more of in hair this year? JONATHAN: On my creative side, I want to see the ghetto styles back in the day—but on wigs, though. For instance, the donut and the hump. You know the hump, with the little ponytail and the little stick ends up. Those back in the day looks that you would be like, “Uh, no” but because it’s on a wig, it’s so much fun. I want to see more creativity, I want to see people actually being creative and not following the wave. Create your own wave. Do what’s coming from your heart and your imagination.

HH: What are you teaching? JONATHAN: I have a one-on-one and a look-and-learn. The one-on-ones are more hands-on. I’ll be showing you every technique on how to install a wig. The Look-and-Learn, you will watch me do wig installations. I’m also showing custom color techniques. HH: So you would lay my lace for me if I signed up? JONATHAN: Yes! Absolutely! HH: Since you’re on the road styling hair for the next two months, what are some must-haves for your kit? JONATHAN: I have to have my göt2b. I have to have my special hair glue. It’s actually something I’m working on and is coming real soon. Some spritz in there, too—Sebastian. And ponytail holders. HH: You mentioned a glue. Are you looking to have your own brand of products? JONATHAN: That’s definitely happening in 2020. Hot tools and products and different things based on my needs. All of the stuff that I need to use, but I can’t not have in my bag. HH: What is the most common question you get from your clients? JONATHAN: “You sure that color is going to look good on me? Is that right for me? Are you sure, freeenn?” [Laughs] That is the most common thing! I just need them to trust me. HH: What else are you working on? JONATHAN: Some new videos. It will be tutorials, interviews. It’ll be all of my friends and clients and moments between us. It will focus on beauty and also what people don’t see with the lifestyle of stylists traveling different places, losing luggage, etc. I just really want to show everybody what really goes on behind the scenes instead of just glam. Also, I’ve got something that’s coming out that is like a “Bad Girl Bootcamp.” I’ll be taking some of my clients and doing a bootcamp where I revamp them into this bad girl. HH: So it’s like a beauty makeover? JONATHAN: Yeah, exactly. HH: You’re in the throes of building your career. What do you want to be known for? JONATHAN: I want to be legendary. I want to be known as a stylist people look up to. I want to be known to educate and inspire everybody.

In

the past few years, Lil Mama has become the definition of beauty goals. She has assembled a whole glam squad, upped her fashion game and successfully orchestrated a red carpet and social media blitz showing off her grown-ass woman transformation.

There’s nothing little about her anymore, except for her name (and even that’s up for debate). Her face beats are impeccable. Her extensions game strong AF. Her hazel green eyes are captivating through fluttering lashes. And, of course, her lip gloss stays poppin’. “Growth,” Lil Mama tells Hype Hair when asked what inspired the switch-up. “I love fashion and music. Over time, growing and with age, I’ve started to find myself through experiences and just living life. With that, came my painting and developing a masterpiece—and I am only getting started.”

on her own track under her birth name “Niatia Kirkland,” where she ditches punchlines for a smooth R&B flow. For those wondering about the name change, it is “kinda like an alter ego situation,” she shares. “‘Niatia’ is used for my singing, and ‘Lil Mama’ is used for my rapping.” Her trials and successes have also changed how she views her career, as she has gone from rapping to acting and now modeling. “Success for me is accomplishing my goals, both big and small, and creating new memories with my family and friends.” And, Lil Mama has become a whole beauty boss in the process, serving as the face of such beauty brands as KISS and Yummy Extensions. She first started working with KISS in August 2018 and has been slanging lashes that have us all rethinking our glam game ever since. “One of KISS’ partners reached out to collaborate on a lash line,” she says of the beauty venture. “With KISS lashes being one of my favorite lashes on the market, it was pretty easy to make a decision.” Now, she has got a limited edition 3D lash collection, “iENVY XOXO Lil Mama,” featuring four of her favorite lash looks and has been involved in every step of putting the campaign together. “From thinking of ideas to photoshoots to what you guys see on your feeds and in the stores, it was truly a journey and an experience,” she says. She does note that while the lashes are glam, they are not over-the-top. “KISS helps enhance features in a very natural way.” This makes sense—even though she’s dropped the tomboy swag, her beauty shoots don’t seem heavily contrived or out-of-character. And that is the definitive part of a true glow-up which, in three words, she describes as “fun, fancy and deep.” “I define beauty through personality, as well as looks,” she adds. “When someone has confidence and great energy, I think that is so beautiful. I think it is also dope to be creative and have different creative outlets of being who you are and expressing oneself—freely at that.”

Before her glow up, Lil Mama first made a name for herself 13 years ago with the high school bop “Lip Gloss”. After a mishap involving a stage crashing became fodder for Internet memes, she delivered a show-stopping performance in 2013 as the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in Lifetime’s TLC biopic Crazy Sexy Cool: The TLC Story. Fans and critics, alike, could not deny that Lil Mama bodied the role—down to her flow, mannerisms and dance moves. She went on to perfect her own look and sound with new songs that showed and proved just how underrated she has been as a lyricist—and has silenced naysayers who doubted her skills and ability to stay relevant. (Did they forget that rap legend MC Lyte is her mentor?) “My two singles “Rollin’” and “Woo” just dropped in the fourth quarter of 2019,” she says of her latest offerings. Videos are now in the works: “Be on the lookout.” “Woo” serves up a hard-hitting lyrical flow reminiscent of throwback Busta Rhymes, while “Rollin’” has her featuring

Star Points.indd 59

When she’s not rocking lashes and units for shoots, you might catch her on Instagram, slaying her own kinky curly tresses in a twist-out or updo. “My go-to look is my natural ‘fro, she says, which we’ve seen go from a honey-blonde back to natural black. “I love it! I love my natural hair, and I take care of it as much as I can to keep it healthy.” Her healthy hair regimen includes “olive oil and coconut oil to keep it moisturized,” she adds. “And deep conditioning is a lifesaver, especially after taking out/off a unit.” She also recently credited hairstylist Cassandra Powell in an Instagram post for her “twist-out, color, and daily maintenance.” Music, check. Lashes, check. Hair, check. Conditioner, check. Any other must-haves? “You know I can’t be without my lipgloss.”

Joy Bryant

ON FINDING THE BEAUTY WITHIN By Stephenetta (isis) Harmon

Joy Bryant has been serving up Black beauty perfection for more than two decades. The former model-turnedactress dropped out of Yale in the mid-1990s to pose it up in fashion campaigns for the likes of Ralph Lauren and Victoria’s Secret. She made her film debut in 2001’s Carmen: A Hip Hopera and has continued to serve up effortless beauty ever since—in everything from such films as Antwone Fisher and Get Rich or Die Tryin’ to television series like Parenthood and Ballers.

Star Style.indd 60

A few years ago, she also launched Basic Terrain, her own bohemian-esque activewear line, with free-flowing pieces you can hike, jet set, or just chill in. (Random, right?) Now, she is playing Marie Wallace, the supportive wife of Aaron Wallace, in the critically acclaimed series For Life. The legal drama is loosely based on the life of Isaac Wright, Jr., who was wrongfully imprisoned and went on to provide legal defense to his fellow inmates before getting out of jail himself.

2/21/20 7:50 AM

Joy says the series was a no-brainer for her. “I had a stack of pilots that I was reading and this pilot, which at the time was called “The untitled Hank Steinberg Project,” was by far my favorite. I just thought, ‘Wow, what an incredible story,” she says. Here, we chat with the ageless beauty about preparing for the role and her no-fuss approach to beauty. HYPE HAIR: You said the role was a natural fit. How? JOY BRYANT: When it comes to Marie, I have loved ones who have been incarcerated. I have two really great girlfriends who have partners who are formerly incarcerated. So, I know what they were going through as they did the bids, too. HH: How did you prepare? JOY: I was able to lean into both of those experiences. Of course, unless you’re actually going through it, you really don›t know. But I knew enough of what that requires from a partner that I felt comfortable bringing that to life and bringing that to Marie. HH: You mentioned your biggest takeaway from the series is having a belief in one’s self. Why is that so important? JOY: In Aaron’s case, he would not have been able to embark on the journey that he was on if he did not believe it. These are extraordinary circumstances, but even just everyday life, whatever it is you want to be or do, it’d be nice if everyone was like, “Yeah, man, I believe in you.” But most of the time, no one’s ever going to believe in you, so what are you gonna do? You have no chance of success or anything if you don’t believe in yourself. HH: How did that belief play out in your own life story? JOY: My life started out as an exercise in self-belief. I grew up in the South Bronx. I was born to a teenage mother. My grandmother raised me. I grew up on welfare. Just start there, right? And one of the things that my grandmother taught me is that a poor Black girl from the South Bronx can actually dream. That’s the core of who I am. Before I was modeling, before I was acting, I believed in myself enough to get good grades. I was lucky to get into certain programs that got me a great education, and I went to Yale. I did all these things that someone like me from where I come from ain’t supposed to be doing. HH: How do you hold onto that belief in trying times? JOY: I just carry that over into everything that I do. It doesn’t mean that there aren’t times where I’m like, “No girl, that’s not it.” That’s the test of life. How do you restore faith in yourself, in life? How do you keep hope alive? That’s the question, the challenge—because it’s not always going to be easy. HH: I have to say, you have made beauty look easy— effortless Black beauty perfection. What’s your approach to beauty? JOY: It comes from the inside out. I have a way of eating and living that works for me and keeps me healthy. Obviously, exercise and all that stuff help, too. But also,

Star Style.indd 61

loving myself and accepting myself and not looking for the approval of others like I used to is important. It keeps me healthy, mentally. HH: How did you get to that place of self-love? JOY: I’ve been in the public eye as a model and also as an actress. Talent helps, but people also judge you on how you look. It’s been a process to get to that point where I’m not looking for other people to validate my beauty. I know that I’m beautiful—not in a conceited kind of way. I just believe that I’m enough, and I’m beautiful the way I am. And if you don’t like it, I don’t give a fuck and if you do like it. I don’t really give a fuck. Either way, I can accept myself on every level—flaws, beauty, and all that stuff—based on me and not somebody else. At the end of the day, it's «I love me, so that I love my hair. I love my little tiny butt.» It doesn't matter what the world says about you. HH: When did you fall in love with your hair? JOY: I don’t think I started falling in love with my hair until recently, really. HH: Why was that? JOY: I grew up, and I didn’t really know how to style my hair. I wore ponytails a lot. I wasn’t a hair girl. I kind of wish I was, but I just didn’t know how to. All I could do was a ponytail. I got my hair braided when I was younger, and then I discovered weaves when I started modeling, which I really dug. HH: What’s your hair doing now? JOY: I wear wigs for work now, maybe a weave every now and then, but I’m really loving wearing my hair in braids. And if I can get the braids when I’m working, great! When I was doing Honey, I was able to wear braids, and when I was doing Parenthood, I wore braids. HH: Do you have a go-to style? JOY: I just need something super-low maintenance. For everyday life, my go-to thing, I’m going to rock braids— whether it be some kind of cornrow style or box braids. HH: Any special hair care regimen? JOY: I keep my hair moisturized! HH: What would you say to women who are still struggling to find peace in their hair? JOY: There are so many different things that Black women have available to them to achieve a look they want to achieve. There’s no judgment if you want to wear extensions, you want to wear a weave, you want to wear it natural hair. You want to wear braids. It doesn’t matter. We get to sort of play and mix in and out of all of these different styles on a dime if we want to. That’s magic. That’s wonderful. For Life airs Tuesdays on ABC at 10 pm EST. COVER STORY

G

arcelle Beauvais is a classic beauty crush. She has consistently served flawless face beats and hairstyles that have stood the test of time. And with a career that now spans across four decades, we are hardpressed to find any missteps. In fact, it seems like she and her career continue to get new wind. She stays booked and busy and her red carpet slay is impeccable. In recent years, she has heated up the screen with Ghost on an episode of Power, starred on Freeform’s Siren, appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming and was tapped as co-host for Hollywood Today Live. She is also the author of a children’s book, reprising her rose-bearer role in Coming 2 America, and getting ready to make her reality television debut. But she will forever be ingrained in our hearts as Fancy from the late ‘90s sitcom The Jamie Foxx Show. “As an actor, you want what you do to resonate with someone, somewhere, somehow and the fact that there are millions of people who see me as Fancy, I mean, I’ll take it all day long. That was a really big part of my career,” she says in a phone interview with Hype Hair. Now we’re getting ready to tune into her debut as the first Black woman on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Her manager’s first thought was to pass on it. She had other thoughts. “I like to push myself and do things out of my comfort zone.” With her two youngest getting close to their teens (the twins are 12, and her eldest is 29), she says she liked the idea of being able to work closer to home. She is also a huge fan of the Housewives franchise—“especially Atlanta.” But, she shares, “I would never do Atlanta cause they would eat my alive. I know and love those women, but I wouldn’t last a day.”

liked my curl pattern. It’s what helps when I say to my kids that you get your curls from me—because they’re mixed. It redefined what I think of my hair.” Garcelle has also witnessed first-hand the change in how Black beauty is celebrated in the industry. “Before it almost felt like we were forced into extensions and longer hair and really covering up our natural hair,” she says. “What is really interesting to see is the evolution of hair, in the sense of texture versus non-texture, wigs versus extensions. Now, we can do twists, we can do a ’fro, we can do braids. Now, you could see a beautiful woman with natural hair on the cover of a magazine.” She is clear though that change isn’t just about outsiders. It’s also about how we as Black women view ourselves. “I can’t speak for all Black women, but I think many thought negatively [about our hair],” she shares. “We can’t just jump into the pool and shake our hair like the White girls do, so we had a stigma about it. So, learning to love our hair is a big deal. That’s who we are. That’s self-love.” The Ultimate Accessory For her, hair is an accessory. “If you can’t have fun with fashion and hair, then it’s a wrap. Being an actor and model, I typically have to keep my hair ready to transform into other characters.” So, her go-to looks stay fairly simple: either a long and wavy look or long and kinky straight.

Beverly Hills seemed more up her alley,” she says. “It’s a huge platform. Also, being the first African American [cast member], I get to put my stamp on it. And who I am, I am a hands-on mom, that’s the most important thing to me. I’m an actor, I’m a friend.”

But the change in perception of Black hair has made her feel freer to play with her tresses. That includes our March cover shoot. Styled by Kim, Garcelle rocked everything from a pumpkin-spiced beachy bob and wind-swept blond tresses to a chic tapered bowl-cut bob and kinky lioness afro accented with cornrows along the crown.

Does she have any apprehension now that she’s started shooting? Sure, but not because of anything she’s done. She just hasn’t seen herself in the lane before. “And, then I don’t know what they’re saying behind my back!”

“It was really fun!” she says. “When you’re working with Kim, she will bring a truckload of hair. We had so many different styles!”

Self-Love Her journey in the spotlight has also helped her fall in love with her. It is because of go-to hairstylist Kim Kimble insisted that she “stop relaxing” that she transitioned to her natural tresses. “I didn’t realize that I had ‘good hair’ until I was in my 40s!” she says. “At first, I thought, ‘Oh, my god, what am I gonna do?’ We come out of the womb and they’re already putting relaxers and all kinds of stuff in our hair and you don’t know your hair,” she says half-jokingly. “But, then I discovered that I

The shoot also opened her up to trying colors outside of her traditional deep chocolate and natural black hues. “I didn’t know if I can get away with blonde, but once I had those looks on I was like, ‘Wow, I can actually do that!’” It’s hard to believe she questions her ability to slay anything. At 53, she appears to be drinking from a magic fountain of youth (and we want in). However, she attributes her ageless glow to good genes, a good dermatologist and finding a healthy balance in life. That includes working out, drinking water, and moisturizing. “I’m trying to stay at it as much as I can.” She also cut out sugar and dairy to help with her eczema. “That was really hard.”

Now, she’s readying for her next chapter of success, which includes film production and raising her twins. Last year, she produced Lalo’s House, an award-winning short on sex trafficking shot in her home country of Haiti. Now, she is in pre-production for her next film. “It’s a psychological thriller that my producing partner and I have written and marketed. That’s really another thing I wanna do is more. Obviously still acting, but producing something that I love. And, she loves cooking for her kids and recently discovered the joys of shopping at Walmart. A good friend of hers, however, advises that when Housewives drops this spring she can’t be seen there. “I was, like, why?!”

“I know people see the glamour and what I do but, but I feel like I’m just a regular girl who gets to do really cool stuff every now and then,” she shares. “That’s how I see myself.” The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills airs on Bravo. Check local listings for season 10 premiere date and time.

BEAUTY MUST HAVES

Chatting it up with Garcelle, one can’t help but wonder about her beauty regimen. She has a natural glow and flawless beauty that is filterfree and fresh. The actress and author, however, doesn’t swear by any magic serums or I-wish-Icould-afford-that beauty secrets. Instead, she credits her no-fuss approach. “I really use a lot of basic products.” As far as hair, she says it’s just about using the right shampoo, deep conditioning and trying not to abuse it too much [with] blow-drying and flat ironing.” Her travel must-haves follow suit, with a few basics, including her EpiPen. “I don’t leave home without it because I have a latex allergy.” Here are five of her current must-haves.

men’s corner MAN CRUSH – MEN OF TV

THE MEN OF POWER: THE FINAL SEASON

It’s hard to believe that we’re saying goodbye to our beloved Starz hit, Power, created by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. This show is full of unexpected twists and tons of hotties, too! Let’s take a look back at our leading men to get some inspo on how to stay sharp and clean while doing dirty work in a big, rich town. As the leader of the pack and the man whose assassination is the reason we’ve been held in suspense the entire season, Omari’s portrayal as the clean-cut Ghost kept us on our toes all season long. To maintain your beard like Omari, try using Fresh Heritage Beard Oil & Hair Growth Vitamins.

Larenz Tate

Rotimi captured our hearts, stomped on them with his betrayals, and gave us hope for redemption all in one season! He also wowed us with his illustrious curl pattern.

Larenz Tate’s character has pointlessly done everything in his power to drag down Ghost. But the one thing he never fails at is achieving his lush waves.

Get the look by using Miss Jessie’s Curly Meringue.

Recreate that shiny texture with Garnier Fructis Style Brilliantine Shine Glossing Spray.

Jessie Williams

Although his cameo was short-lived, we all made sure our DVRs captured the moment Jessie Williams made his debut as Lakeisha’s ex. To get his coifed, curly high top, try Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Curling Custard.
