Rainbow Film Festival FP_Full Page Bleed New 16/08/2018 10:26 Page 1
generations of women are forced to contend with their family secrets and past lives; a film that will see you laugh and cry.
e 13th Shropshire Rainbow Film Festival
Alaska Is A Drag will have you cheering for plucky Leo who refuses to be labelled on his way to both diva stardom in a drag contest and champion of the local boxing circuit, all in an effort to find his mother and leave his small town hum-drum life.
Shropshire's Rainbow Film Festival celebrates a big 13th year by bringing exciting international LGBTQ+ cinema to the heart of historic Shrewsbury. The festival focusses on nuanced depictions of sexuality and brings our audience into conversation with filmmakers, their art and the community, all in the warm and friendly setting of the heritage listed Old Market Hall Cinema & Cafe/Bar.
Our Closing Night film is Mario, this Swiss film tackles homophobia in league football and the difficult choices two rising stars must make between their budding relationship and their own authenticity or pursuing a chance to play football professionally. Both actors took out top honours for their performances in the 2018 Swiss film awards.
Entertain, Educate, Challenge & Change...
The festival's opening film is the sweeping and sexy, true story of Professor Marston and the Wonder Woman. Marston, a psychology professor, enters into a taboo breaking polyamourous sexual relationship with his wife and their young assistant, a relationship that leads to the creation of DC's hit comic: Wonder Woman.
We have the Academy Award winning A Fantastic Woman (Best Foreign Film- 2018), a moving drama from Chile about a transgender woman (played by transgender actor, Daniela Vega) who in mourning her lover's sudden death, finds herself under invasive scrutiny from his family and the police, who suspect her of murder. There's a strong focus in this year's programme on the depiction of older lesbians with the double bill of the internationally awarded Canadian short film, Marguerite, and from USA, the emotional Snapshots- when an old, undeveloped roll of film resurfaces, three
Current social issues are tackled in both A Moment in the Reeds, an intimate relationship drama between a Finnish man and a Syrian refugee, and In Between, following three Palestinian women sharing an apartment in Tel Aviv and fighting to define themselves against the oppressive expectations of their community and families.
In addition to our seven great features we have UK and International short film programmes showcasing some of the most interesting international Queer shorts from the last year. As always, the audience will be able to vote for their favourites of the festival. We will also be hosting Q&A conversations with some of our filmmakers and we have a fun lecture on A Romp Through Classic Camp. Shropshire Rainbow Film Festival is open and welcome to all, join us for good conversation, a drink (at the fully stocked cafe/bar), a bite to eat at one of our social events or for some good quality cinema. We look forward to seeing you there!

Côte Brasserie - Shrewsbury by Luke Smith
Côte Shrewsbury, is a cosy, French – inspired restaurant, close to the eatre Severn, Shrewsbury Abbey and the Town Walls Tower. Warmly welcoming both locals and visitors, to enjoy a menu bustling with delicious French fare, in a stunning setting for breakfast, lunch or dinner. ey also offer the option of al fresco dining during the summer months at one of the outdoor tables. My Wife Ashleigh and I decided to head over to the restaurant as we had heard really good things and couldn’t wait to sample the food for ourselves. As we entered we were welcomed by the manager of the restaurant Lesley and shown to our table, the décor is very modern and the restaurant has a very pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. Our table for the evening was right by the window and perfect for us as we love to sit and watch the world go by over a glass of wine or two. We were handed the menus by our waiter Matt with two choices the A LA Carte menu or the prestige set menu which is served daily from 12 Noon – Close and offers two courses for £15.95 or ree courses for 18.95 with plenty of selection on both menus. We started with our drink orders and I decided to have a diet coke as I was the driver for the evening and Ashleigh went for the Kir Royale, blanc de blancs brut with cassis. We also had some complimentary filtered water in a special bottle explaining where it comes from which was nice.
“
Côte is inspired by the brasseries of Paris, championing relaxed allday dining and serving authentic French classics made from great quality, fresh ingredients.

10 Eating Out
For our starters Ashleigh decided to try the Calamari; breadcrumbed squid sautéed in garlic, lemon and parsley with tartare sauce and I opted for the Chicken Liver Parfait; chicken liver pate with toasted brioche and spiced apple chutney. Ashleigh was really impressed with her starter and even said that it was the best Calamari she had ever eaten and I had to agree, the breadcrumbs were light and fluffy with a light crisp and cooked to perfection and a dish we would recommend you try for yourself. My starter was equally as impressive, nicely presented on a wooden board and the pate in a jar, with the brioche and chutney accompanying. e starter was fantastic, the pate fresh and full of flavour, the brioche cooked perfectly and with the apple chutney making it a fantastic combination – a brilliant start. For our main courses I decided to go for the Roasted Pork Belly; pan roasted pork belly, with gratin potato, braised savoy cabbage, apples, and thyme and calvados jus. Ashleigh went for the Half Chargrilled Breton Chicken, served with

frites and Normandy butter with garlic, lemon and parsley. e Pork was simply outstanding, cooked to absolute perfection, with a crispy top which melted in my mouth. e braised savoy cabbage, apples, thyme and calvados jus made this dish come alive with so much flavour, making it everything you could possibly want from a dish. e gratin potato finished it off perfectly – our waiter Matt’s recommendation of this particular dish was fully justified and very much appreciated. Ashleigh’s main course was also impressive, a fairly simple dish but sometimes even the simplest dishes can go horribly wrong. e chicken was cooked excellently, with the Normandy butter with garlic, lemon and parsley, and the frites were very good. Another fantastic course and things just kept getting better and better. Dessert next, but before that Ashleigh decided to have a Bombay Sapphire Gin with lemonade and I stuck with the water. e dessert menu offers plenty of choice, making it quite a hard decision. Ashleigh being a chocolate lover, decided to go for the Chocolate Fondant; warm chocolate fondant with vanilla ice-cream and I went for the Crème Caramel; traditional set vanilla pod custard with dark caramel and cream. Ashleigh’s dessert hit the spot - the warm chocolate fondant and ice cream leaving a very satisfying taste in her mouth. My dessert was superb, made fresh that morning, the creamy vanilla pod custard and sultry dark caramel and added cream made this one of my favourite desserts ever and I can’t wait to have it again on my return. Overall we had a terrific visit to the Côte Brasserie; the menus offer something for everyone and are great value for money, with outstanding quality. e service was amazing and huge credit goes to Lesley and Matt for making our visit that little bit more enjoyable.

e Shed Cocoa Room by Luke Smith
e Shed – Cocoa Room is Shrewsbury’s smallest antiques and coffee shop, nestled in the heart of Abbey Forgate and it is one of the most perfect places to sit back and unwind. My colleague Kerrie and I decided to head over to e Shed as we had heard some impressive things and wanted to check them out for ourselves. As we arrived we were instantly impressed with both the exterior and interior of the building, and it was clear to see that there had been a great deal of effort made to make this not just a coffee shop, but somewhere unique which really catches the imagination. It has a really warm feel to it and a quirkiness that really gives it the edge on anywhere we have been before. We were shown to our table which was located at the back of the coffee shop where it was very tranquil indeed - you could easily sit there all day and relax on the comfy sofas.

12 Eating Out
We decided to try a range of items from the menu and Tim explained that he likes to make constant changes to keep things fresh and different, and I very much agree that in a very competitive industry it is always wise to be different and to be true to yourself to maintain your own identity. To start we ordered a couple of drinks; Millionaires Hot Chocolate served with cream, shortbread biscuit and toffee sauce for me and Kerrie decided the Banoffee Milkshake with cream and toffee sauce was the one for her. My hot chocolate was simply amazing, I am not usually a huge fan as I hate that dreaded powered chocolate taste that comes out all too often, simply ruining the experience, but this was so much more than I expected; creamy texture and very smooth and the toffee sauce gave it an edge, finished off with the shortbread biscuit and cream, it made this the perfect hot chocolate. Kerrie was equally impressed with hers and I must agree as I had a cheeky sip. e fresh bananas used to make the milkshake made this so much better than normal milkshakes - the perfect start to the day. e food menu is extensive and there is plenty of choice, we decided to start off with the Roasted Vegetables with lentils, butternut squash, beetroot, shallots and chilli and feta. is is a dish that I haven’t
The Shed_Double Page Editorial 16/08/2018 14:16 Page 2
had before and with so many ingredients I really did wonder if it would work. My doubts were quickly squashed, the whole dish was fresh and vibrant and moreish, the key fresh ingredients making this a dish a real success. e next dish was the Cheesy BBQ Pulled Pork Toastie served on thick white bread and a side of Coleslaw. Toasties are one of Kerrie’s favourite things and once again this was in a league of its own, the pulled pork melted in her mouth and had a tasty melted cheese made this the best toastie ever. Next was Avocado with spring onion and chilli sour cream served on toasted sour dough. Avocado being one of my favourite unique fruits, I was really keen to try this dish; it had a creamy flavour and was really fresh tasting and the sour dough made for a very impressive treat. For our final choice we had the American Pancake Stack served with maple cream cheese and freeze dried berries, although all the dishes were fantastic - this was my favourite. e pancakes were light and fluffy, each bite was bliss, the pancakes were the perfect consistency and weren’t heavy like some can be. e maple cream cheese and freeze dried berries were also brilliant and made this my favourite dish of the day. Overall we had a terrific visit and would recommend e Shed to anyone - go along and sample this fine food and drink, or if you just fancy a coffee and cake that is fine too! e Shed is much more than a coffee shop and deserves to firmly be stamped on the map. Tim is always looking to experiment and is constantly evolving, and this is paying off big time. e proof is literally in the pudding. We are already looking to return very soon and sample some more wonderful food and drink.

English Drinks Company Scoops Two Top Awards...
Local Success Products earning a Silver Accolade represent ‘a fine example; excellent quality’ notching up an impressive 80-85.9%. A Bronze win is only secured by scoring 75 – 79.9% and indicates a product that is well above average.
The English Drinks Company Managing Director, Graham Carr Smith said, “We are thrilled to have our gins recognised and applauded by so many well-respected industry experts. As gin sales continue to show such stellar growth, we are committed to providing our customers with access to new and innovative gin flavour experiences.” Both gins can be purchased via The English Drinks Company’s website www.englishdrinkscompany.co.uk; alternatively, a local stockist can be located via the same website.
Shrewsbury based The English Drinks Company is celebrating two significant wins at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2018 – considered to be the most prestigious competition of its kind in the world. The company scooped a coveted Silver for its The Orangery Gin (a delicious, traditionally crafted gin infused with Valencian oranges, that boasts zesty, citrus notes and a delicate smooth finish) and a Bronze for its popular Classic Pink Gin (which fuses the subtle flavours of pomegranate and chinchona bark to create a wonderful smooth taste designed to appeal to all palates).
Winning a revered IWSC Award represents a huge achievement. There are at least seven judges per panel (the judging schedule for awards spans seven months of the year ensuring the judges only taste a maximum number of wines and spirits per judging session) and requires more than 400 judges in total from over 30 countries. Judging is based on blind tasting by an expert panel and products which receive the top medals are then subject to a separate detailed chemical and microbiological analysis which is undertaken by a third party.

e Punch Bowl Inn by Eileen Callear
Located within the expanding and popular village of West Felton just off the A5 from Shrewsbury to Oswestry, e Punch Bowl enjoys a good central position in the village, just opposite the local shop and village hall. is traditional country inn, has open fires and character features and comprises of a main bar; where you can pop in and enjoy a pint or two whilst watching the sports, a lounge and comfy dining area; offering a relaxed dining experience for everyone from couples and families to larger groups celebrating a special occasion, plus there is a large car park and extensive gardens to the rear. Father and daughter team Geoff Hopkins and Bronte Griffiths, who took over the reins at the Punch Bowl recently, made us very welcome as we entered, offering warm smiles and a cold drink – just what we needed as it was once again sweltering outside; the dining area was lovely and cool, finally some respite from the heat!
“
Generous portions, fresh homemade food, and excellent quality ingredients are just a few of the reasons why you should pay e Punch Bowl at West Felton a visit.

We were shown to our table by one of the lovely waitresses, the menus were laid out all ready for us to inspect, plus some very interesting specials like Rabbit and whole Sea bass – which I was very interested to try. We browsed the extensive menu, which has a good variety of dishes available, with starters like Mushroom Crouton, Tandoori Chicken and Lamb Kofta Kebabs and Home-made soup of the day - with prices ranging between £3 and £6. I chose the Liver Pate; smooth tasty pate, served with fingers of fresh toast, and my colleague Luke went for the Calamari; paprika dusted crispy battered squid rings, served with a garlic mayonnaise dip. e mains menu includes classics like Mixed Grill, Lamb Shanks, Battered Cod, Burgers and Steak & Ale Pie, as well as some more unusual ones like the Tomahawk Steak - with prices from £8 to £16. I however was interested in the whole Sea bass from the specials menu. Luke was feeling peckish so he decided the Rump & Ribs was the way to go. e starters arrived quickly, freshly cooked and very tasty - which was brilliant considering that the majority of the dishes on offer are freshly prepared on order, and you would inevitably expect a bit of a wait. and creamy, perfect with the fresh toast and a small side salad and Luke said his calamari was just right; light and crispy – very tasty. e starters done, we were ready for the next course. e mains arrived shortly after, my whole Sea bass looked amazing, with potatoes and mixed vegetables. It was cooked perfectly and you could taste the freshness with every bite – stunning. Luke’s Rump & Ribs was just what the doctor ordered – the perfect answer to his hunger. A juicy rump steak, accompanied by a full rack of steaming hot, slow cooked ribs in a special BBQ sauce. With it were some of the chunkiest chips I’ve ever seen; I pinched one to try and it was fab - fluffy and light on the inside and crispy on the outside. It also came with mushroom, grilled plum tomato, garden peas and some crispy onion rings. Full of flavour and faultlessly prepared – excellent! e waitress asked if we would like to hear the dessert options and we decided to go the whole hog and have a pudding too. New York Cheesecake with forest fruits, ice-cream and cream for me and Apple Pie with icecream and cream for Luke. e creamy cheesecake went nicely with the tangy fruits and the ice-cream. I polished off every last bite. Luke was impressed with his Apple Pie, which came served cold; it was full of flavour and the pastry was nice and crumbly. It was the perfect way to round off a great meal. Generous portions, fresh home-made food, and excellent quality ingredients are just a few of the reasons why you should pay e Punch Bowl at West Felton a visit. e staff are welcoming and friendly, the service is very good and the food is great value for money.

Easy Gin Cocktails.
Simple Cocktails...
NEGRONI
Make in Minutes... Gin is enjoying a revival and is now more popular than ever. So which are the best gin cocktails to make, to take it to another level altogether? No fancy equipment required, you can even use a jam jar as a shaker! As a general rule use about 50ml of gin per cocktail unless stated otherwise in a recipe. If you are also using a liqueur too, you might want to use slightly less gin, maybe dropping it back to 40ml gin and make up the other 10ml with the liqueur. For the very best results use fresh citrus juices, and balance it out 20ml to 15ml of sugar syrup that’s been made from equal parts sugar and water.
THE BRAMBLE Short and Fragrant. You'll Need: 40ml Gin 20ml Sugar Syrup 20ml Lemon Juice 10ml Crème De Mure Berries Or Lemon Zest for garnish
42
Feature | Gin Cocktails
TO MAKE - take the dry gin and shake together with the lemon and sugar syrup, pour over crushed ice and drizzle the crème de mure through the drink. Garnish with a lemon zest or some fresh seasonal berries or even a sprig of lavender.
e Negroni is an iconic Italian cocktail, made of gin, vermouth rosso, and Campari, garnished with orange peel. It is considered an apéritif. You'll need: 25ml Gin 25ml Vermouth 25ml Campari 1 Orange TO MAKE - Pour the gin, vermouth and Campari into a glass over ice. Stir it down to your preferred taste. en, zest the orange with true Italian flair over the glass and add the citrus to the potion.
ELDERFLOWER COLLINS Fresh and fruity. You can buy elderflower cordial from most big supermarkets. You'll need: 50ml Gin 20ml Lemon 10ml Sugar Syrup 10ml Elderflower Cordial and Soda to finish TO MAKE - Shake the gin with the lemon, sugar and a dash of elderflower cordial. Pour over rock ice and lengthen with sparkling water. Decorate with a sprig of your favourite herb. If you’re feeling like a twist to this then top with sparkling wine instead of water to make an Elderflower Royale.

Years & Years.
Biggest Live Tours
UK & EUROPE TOUR 30 November 2018, Arena Birmingham Following the release of their hotly anticipated second album ‘Palo Santo’ on July 6th, Years & Years announced their biggest ever UK and European run of tour dates which includes a show at Arena Birmingham. e last few months have seen Years & Years once again rise to the very forefront of British pop. With current single ‘If You’re Over Me’ currently continuing its thrilling ascent up the charts, the Olly-Alexander-fronted trio have never felt so unstoppable. Recently they played a dazzling set at Capital’s Summertime Ball, premiered their short film ‘Palo Santo’ at BAFTA, and performed ‘If You’re Over Me’ on Graham Norton.
intuitively connected to great, homespun British pop classicism, ‘Palo Santo’ is an album that confirms Years & Years’ ascension to the world stage. At the core of it all is Olly Alexander, a once-in-a-generation front-man who understands more than most his responsibility as a pop star. His personal leap forward in scope and ambition is reflected in the album’s colourful mix of collaborators, which range from Kid Harpoon, Greg Kurstin, Julia Michaels and Justin Trantor to Steve Mac, Jessie Shatkin and Sarah Hudson. On ‘Palo Santo’, and indeed in their highly celebrated live show, Years & Years’ impact on pop feels truly tribal, one in which the minority is always the majority, and everyone is welcome.
It’s no surprise then that the band have announced an arena tour of the UK in November alongside an equally impressive string of European tour dates for early 2019. Years & Years will bring their very own, self-created, fascinating world of ‘Palo Santo’ properly to life at Arena Birmingham on 30 November. e band will then start 2019 with a run of great headline shows in Europe. ‘Palo Santo’ – the band’s glorious second album – was released on July 6th. Always band Tickets are on general sale 9am 22 June 2018 via www.theticketfactory.com or by calling 0844 33 88 222 *Calls cost 7p per minute plus your phone company's access charge. Soft wool, leather, velvet and floaty chiffon all combine into this seasons trend. Autumn brings in deep earthy tones and sumptuous fabrics which are cosy and warm, even on the coolest Autumn evening. I love this multi coloured sequin dress from MW by Matthew Williamson £160 at Debenhams and printed boho dress £215 by Maison Scotch at House of Fraser (pictured top right) with rich colours and a touch of glamour you can’t go far wrong. You can mix and match different fabrics, like in the picture above from M&Co - A chunky wool coat with leather look jeans and that lovely oversized scarf, which brings the outfit together perfectly.
e Essentials… A cosy scarf and chunky coat are my top picks for the season. I particularly love the yellow and orange ones featured from M&Co. e oversized scarfs complete the look brilliantly. To glam things up add a brooch like this Dragonfly from which is £12 from Accessorize. No Autumn look is complete without some stylish boots - these Patent Red Lace Up Boots £29.99 and Cream Ankle Boots £34.99 from New Look are my favourites and they go with just about anything!

Book Worms... A black country girl who loves to read. I have never heard of Catherine Isaac until my favourite author, Paige Toon, posted a picture of her book on Twitter recommending everyone to read it. If Paige loves it, then I was sure I would so when I saw I could request a copy on NetGallery, I knew I had to. You, Me, Everything’s opening chapter sees Lucy in the hospital, about to give birth to her first child while her partner Adam is nowhere to be seen. She calls her mother who helps her through the birth, while Adam misses it completely. Fast forward ten years, you see Jess trying to keep her promise to her ill mother, that she will attempt to rebuild the relationship between her useless ex Adam for the sake of their son William. Lucy has struggled to forgive Adam for missing their son’s birth, and for moving away to France when she needed him most. She is angry at him for not having a stronger relationship with their son and for having to raise William as a single mother. But now she has a secret, one that will affect Adam and William and she knows she must follow through on her mother’s wish. is story is so beautifully written and will have you hooked from the very first page. Lucy is the perfect main character. She is intelligent, strong, a little feisty but fiercely protective of her family. She is a
wonderful mother to William and you can see how much she adores him, and he her. I loved the relationship between Lucy and her mother. It was beautiful to read and at times heartbreaking. You see, Lucy’s mom has Huntington’s disease, something that is currently incurable and terminal. You follow Lucy on her journey as she struggles to accept her mother’s condition, while also wondering whether she too carries the gene. I didn’t particularly warm to Adam as the romantic lead. I think it’s obvious how his and Lucy’s relationship will develop, but I still struggled with how easily forgiven her was. I think Lucy should have taken more time to build their relationship, rather than jumping straight back in where they left off. You, Me, Everything is a truly wonderful story that will have you laughing one minute, and reaching for the tissues the next. It’s a tale of family, friendships, love and heartache and was difficult to put down. I read this book in one sitting and I know others would do the same. I rate this book four out of five stars and I know I will definitely be looking out for other books from this incredible author. e book is out now and I would really encourage you all to go buy a copy now.

SLEEP BETTER... Sleeping poorly directly affects your mental and physical health and it can take a serious toll on your daytime energy, productivity, emotional balance, and even your weight. Making simple yet important changes to your daytime routine and bedtime habits can have a profound impact on how well you sleep, leaving you feeling mentally sharp, emotionally balanced, and full of energy throughout the day. Here’s How...
SLEEP/WAKE CYCLE... Try to go to sleep and get up at the same time every day. Choose a bed time when you normally feel tired, so that you don’t toss and turn. If you’re getting enough sleep, you should wake up naturally without an alarm. Avoid sleeping in—even on weekends. If you have to make up for a late night, opt for a daytime nap over sleeping in.
LIMIT LIGHT EXPOSURE How to Prevent Sleep Deprivation Without Spending a Fortune... Menkind have found a new gadget that will have you sleeping like a baby – all for under £45. Sleep is essential to your wellbeing, yet recent research is showing that sleep deprivation is a real problem in the UK, with many studies linking it to a weakened immune system, unwanted weight gain as well as life-threatening diseases such as stroke, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Many people find getting to sleep the biggest issue - this is where the Dodow comes in. e Dodow light is a smart metronome light that teaches you to control your breathing in order to fall asleep quicker. In tests, it’s been proven
76

to help subjects fall asleep 2.5 faster than usual, making it a valuable tool to have in the bedroom.
Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone controlled by light exposure that helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle. Your brain secretes more melatonin when it’s dark—making you sleepy—and less when it’s light—making you more alert. Get some sunlight in the morning, to help you wake up and at night avoid bright screens for 1-2 hours before bedtime. Even turning the brightness down on your phone screen will make a difference. Try listening to music or read a book instead.
e Dodow £45 - Menkind
EAT RIGHT... Exercising during the day will help you sleep better, but your daytime eating habits also play a role in how well you sleep, especially in the hours before bedtime. Limit caffeine and nicotine as both are stimulants. Also avoid big meals and alcohol close to bed time Eating can cause heartburn and stomach problems and alcohol interferes with your sleep pattern.

Now the summer is coming to a close, its a good time to start thinking about how you are going to care for your skin throughout the autumn and winter months.
So, what are the ideal treatments to have throughout the autumn and winter months to ensure our skin is healthy and looking even better next summer?
w Juvederm Volite
Juvederm Volite is the world’s first ever dermal filler that actually improves the hydration and quality of your skin. It effectively smooths and hydrates whilst simultaneously improving the texture, tone and brightness - improving skin health from within. Volite contains Hyaluronic Acid, a naturally occurring molecule made by our bodies that is responsible for water retention in our skin. Volite improves hydration and elasticity by stimulating your body’s own collagen production, leading to an improvement in overall skin quality. Volite can be used to smooth, hydrate and increase elasticity in the skin on your face, neck, decolletage and hands. A single treatment will leave you with smoother, radiant and hydrated skin. Results typically last 9-12 month. From £395.
SHIFNAL
SUPER IPL TREATMENT w Super IPL
Humans have had a problem with hair for thousands of years. Plucking, waxing and needle epilation are all temporary and needle epilation is only capable of treating one hair at a time.
Excess hair may be the result of medical conditions, but the pressure to remove it may be cosmetic. Cultural norms and peer group pressure often require the removal of hair in certain regions such as the face, axillae (armpits), legs and bikini line for women, and the chest and back for men. Our Super IPL treatment is 10 times faster than standard IPL. It is clinically-proven, safe and effective, giving long-term removal of unwanted hair and is effective on all skin types. Treatments start at just £30. Offer! Buy 5 sessions of IPL and get the 6th session free.
w eDS Dermastamp
eDS DERMASTAMP
The multi-award winning eDS dermastamp microneedling treatment is a firm favourite of ours. Using medical grade, German engineered microneedles, the device produces thousands of microneedle columns in the skin, which in turn stimulates the skin to naturally regenerate and repair itself. This treatment is idea for the treatment of fine lines around the delicate eye area and results are not only smoother, brighter rejuvenated skin, but it can also lead to an improvement in the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks. Single treatments start at just £120.
w Sun protection and SPF
We often think of protecting our skin from UVB when its sunny, but damaging UVA, infrared-A and visible light radiation is present everyday, all year round. They penetrate the cloud and even glass. High energy visible light (HEV) from our mobile phones and computer screens are also contributing to premature skin ageing. Therefore it is really important not to neglect your skin when it comes to protecting it. We recommend wearing a factor 50 SPF everyday throughout the autumn and winter months, such as Heliocare 360° which is proven to protect the skin from UVA, UVA and Infrared-A. Park Street Clinic are official stockists of Heliocare and Heliocare 360°.

KIM COULD BE RIGHT... It appears that an unusual mushroom that Kim Kardashian supposedly uses as part of her beauty regime could actually help us look and feel younger. It’s not often scientists agree with celebrities when it comes to health and beauty claims, but in the instance of an unusual mushroom called ‘reishi’ is appears they might… Reishi mushrooms are an unusual fungi that has been revered in Japan for thousands of years, where they were traditionally eaten by Emperors for their supposed ability to help increase life span. More recently Kim Kardashian has been reported as claiming that she loves using reishi facial peels1 to keep her skin look taught, smooth and glowing. It now seems, according to a recently published scientific paper2, that Kim could be on to something and that this magic mushroom may indeed help you look and feel younger.

Scientists looked at a whole raft of studies that have been carried out on extracts from reishi mushrooms and found they appear to have a number of potential anti-aging benefits, including helping protect the brain (by reducing the death of brain cells called neurons), having various different anti-oxidant activities (anti-oxidants help fight oxygen free radicals, the main culprits thought to be behind aging skin) and even extending life span in various animals by helping with the efficiency by which our cells produce energy. e researchers surmised: “In conclusion, a variety of Ganoderma lucidum (reishi) extracts have definite anti-aging properties and they exert their anti-aging effects mainly through antioxidation, immunomodulation and anti-neurodegeneration.” e easiest way to get reishi in your life... I specialise in targeted medical and cosmetic treatments which are designed to give you healthy, glowing skin. I've been in dermatology since 2001. I also offer a range of treatments that can firm, tone and smooth the skin, including Botox and dermal fillers. I’ll work with you to decide on the most appropriate course of treatment, so that you’ll leave looking natural and relaxed, rather than frozen or fixed. I understand the impact that problem skin can have on your self-confidence, so I offer dedicated teen skin consultations to help bring stressed, hormonal skin back into balance. My specialist paediatric training means that I’m also qualified to work with younger children who suffer from common skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis; I'm a mum myself, so I know how distressing skin irritations can be for young children and their families. I'm an experienced skin surgeon, and I'm fully-trained to remove anything unsightly or suspicious. anks to my specialist training in Australia, I have a special interest in skin cancer checks and mole removal. Many of my patients schedule annual checks; these are quick and easy, and give great peace of mind. De-Clutter Spring Clean_Full Page Bleed New 20/08/2018 14:37 Page 1
Tidy House - Tidy Mind... Clear your home of clutter this Autumn and make your home more relaxing haven... e Living Room...
Sometimes, just having too many pieces of furniture can make the living room feel squashed. Just removing one large item can make a huge difference. Keep the surfaces clear, coffee tables, mantelpieces, windowsills & side tables can become cluttered with cups, plates and even wrappers. You could swap your coffee table for a storage chest, so you can keep throws and other bits and bobs in. Pick a few items that you want to display and then rehome some of the rest, better still get rid of what you can. Make sure you have a wastepaper bin at hand to stop rubbish accumulating - this will at least mean you can locate the remote when you sit down after a long day!
e Kitchen...
Having a good de-clutter isn’t just good for your home - it can actually help relieve stress...
De-cluttering is a great way to breathe new life into your home. Getting rid of clutter doesn’t just improve the look and feel of your home but it can also help to relax your mood and create a more ‘zen’ atmosphere. Try these de-cluttering tips for yourself.
e Hallway And Stairs...
It’s the first room as you step through the door and gives an overall first impression of your whole home. If the hallway is blocked, it affects the flow of the whole house and how easily you can move around. To help keep the items that you have to keep in the hallway in check, put some restrictions in place, for example, at the entrance, take note of the items that are gathering here and decide which belong there and require a storage solution and which can be stored elsewhere. Then put in place a storage section to keep these essentials in one space. Shelves, baskets and hooks are brilliant ways to have everything at hand but not scattered all over the place.
happiness is a place between
t lile & t much...
The heart of most homes, it can easily become a dumping ground for paper, post, sports bags and even laundry! An organised kitchen not only looks good, but having a clean and clear cooking space to work in will satisfy your soul. Keep worktops clear. Clear out the cupboards and make space for the things that you are currently keeping on the worktops. If you are still struggling for space you could get baskets for on the top of your wall cupboards, for the things you only use once in a blue moon.
e Bedroom...
The bedroom should be a relaxing place to rest and recuperate. If you’re suffering from a lack of space or too much ‘stuff’, it’s time to sort it out and create the haven you need. Tidy the tops of bedside cabinets, and clear behind the back of the cabinets and the bed, where dust and items can easily collect. What’s the point of having beautiful bedding if the surrounds are a mess? Get rid of the clutter (use under-bed storage space) and replace with a small vase of flowers. It’s will give a lovely lift to the room.

What is Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is a bacterial illness that affects humans and animals. The bacterium that causes Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, is transmitted through tick bites. Ticks themselves do not cause the disease but harbour and transmit the bacteria that cause it.
Once a tick is attached it takes 24-48hrs to transmit the bacteria that cause the disease so prompt identification and removal is key to preventing transmission.
Transmission is from tick to host only – the disease cannot be transmitted from dog to dog, or dog to human. However, walking dogs may make owners more likely to encounter tick infested areas, and sharing a common environment means that dogs may bring unattached ticks into the household.
Symptoms Some infected animals show no symptoms at all, others take weeks or months to develop clinical signs and these can fluctuate over time. Typical symptoms can include: - Fever - Lethargy - Loss of appetite - Joint swelling - Lameness
Recurrent ‘shifting leg lameness’, with joint swelling and tenderness migrating from one extremity to another over a period of days or weeks, is also a possibility.
Diagnosis Tests for Lyme disease in dogs do not always provide a definitive answer – dogs can produce antibodies against Borrelia indicating that they have had contact with the bacteria but are not necessarily
suffering with active disease. Due to the broad nature of symptoms, diagnosis is therefore usually made on a combination of assessment of clinical signs and test results to rule out other more common conditions. Treatment An extended course of antibiotics provides effective treatment.
Prevention A vaccine is available for dogs – these appear to work best in dogs when given before exposure to the Lyme-causing bacteria. Speak with your vet about your pet’s suitability for the vaccine.
Dogs should be treated regularly with an effective tick preventative or tick repellent product. Your vet or veterinary nurse can recommend the most effective products for your pet’s lifestyle. Risk of transmission is highest when the ticks are actively seeking hosts in spring and autumn but ticks are active at any temperature above freezing so year round treatment and vigilance is important.
Dogs should be routinely checked for ticks after spending time outside and any attached ticks promptly removed. Tick hooks are available to purchase at our branches and are the best tool to use. Tweezers or other methods risk leaving the mouthparts of the tick behind and other methods involving ‘suffocating’ the tick increase the risk of distressing the tick and causing it to regurgitate bacteria into the pet’s bloodstream.
If in any doubt about effective removal, book an appointment to see one of our nurses who will be happy to remove it for you and to demonstrate the safest technique.
If you think you or anyone in your family may have been bitten by a tick, consult your GP for further advice. Dr Rob Hamilton BSc BVetMed MRCVS

Beast From e East As you read this you will remember how just a few months ago a nation was gripped in the teeth of an icy blast. They even gave it a name. The Beast From The East. A horror movie title appropriate to a channel of chilly air sweeping in from Siberia with a bloodnipping mission to banish warmth from the face of the northern hemisphere. Remember it? The stuff of legend, of awestruck whispering around camp fires to a chorus of howling wolves in the surrounding forest. As a Yorkshireman put it. 'By gum. It were bitter!'
Forgive me if I chuckle. Allow me to explain. By an irony of fate, the advent of The Beast From The East coincided with the arrival on my drive of my very own beast - a mighty motor vehicle representing a marriage of felicitous convenience between the eastern promise Isuzu and the hard climate of Iceland and Scandinavia. Arctic Trucks - whose motto is 'Explore without limits' - is a company renowned for taking an already impressive base vehicle and beefing it up to the heroic proportions of myths. In this case turning a pick-up into a titan of load-carrying capability.
When submitting to the Isuzu D Max Arctic Trucks AT35, tough terrain simply trembles, cowering in submission beneath the type of grunt and grip seldom seen in the real world of rugged motoring. Big wheels shod with massive 35inch all-terrain tyres supporting a big 'double cab' body, make mincemeat of off-road ops. This is the most robust and capable pick-up this side of Doomsday so it comes as no surprise that it is chosen by the Icelandic Rescue Services.
As luck would have it, at the very moment that The Beast From The East dropped it's calling card I had at my command The £45,535 Isuzu D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 poised and ready to go. In the end the score resolved itself as follows. Beast From The East nil, Isuzu D Max Arctic Trucks AT35, ten squared to the power of a hundred glaciers. It amounted to the biggest non-contest since years ago when Brian London stepped into the ring with Muhammad Ali. (Ask your grandad about that one). The Siberian blast simply lacked the puff to resist this incarnation of mechanical muscle. Just to put you in the picture, neighbours goggled at it, schoolboys eyes popped out of their sockets, vicars wives hurried to lock up their daughters and bodybuilders broke down and wept when confronted with the sort of bulk they could only dream about. To say that the D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 is a big pick-up is to underplay its physical
By Syd Taylor
presence. And remember, nothing is for show. This vehicle is for real: a bad-hauling titan conceived to shrug off terrible terrain with a disdainful, effortless expenditure of energy. It will tow 3.5 tonnes in a braked trailer thanks to the brilliant new 1.9 litre 164PS litre diesel and with 'shift-on-the-fly' available at the twist of a knob, there's two/four/low ratio four-wheel drive to tackle just about anywhere, disposing of any off-road challenge with the insouciance of a flaneur flicking aside a fly.
It's not just off-road where it scores either. On-road it is a very civilised, comfortable and cosy truck with leather upholstery and all the electronic gadgetry that you expect these days. Surprisingly you can cruise effortlessly and quietly at 80mph on motorways despite the huge tyres and there is power enough to reach 112mph if you are so disposed. As the blizzard descended I offered my services to the parish council who were anxious to open a temporary mountain shelter alongside the local artificial ski slope which had transformed into an avalanche in the waiting. This very real threat meant the evacuation of local shops and affordable homes and a corresponding need for temporary accommodation. Councillor Tierney charged me with transporting one tonne of groceries from the isolated shop to the mountain shelter.
Snow was drifting in the wild wind - but no worries. I engaged 4x4 drive and the mighty wheels began to rotate as this high and mighty Hercules parted mere snow as though it offered no more resistance than a computer generated image. Sub zero temperatures meant nothing. The AT35 responded to them with the eagerness of Hungry Horace attacking porridge. 'Give me more' it seemed to say as it crested snowdrifts in the manner of a lifeboat at sea. By now abandoned vehicles were everywhere waiting for the thaw when privately contracted tow-trucks would steal them away to the vehicle pound where chagrined owners would be forced to flash the plastic before reclaiming what was rightfully theirs. (This is not a made up story. It happened!).It was a sad day when the thaw came. With a return to normality I had to settle for being the biggest and the best pick-up around. No one dared mess with this D-Max: big muscle brooks no argument. So - as we entertain the prospect of increasing cells of extreme weather this is something to ponder. As they say..'When the going gets tough, the tough get going'. So true of the D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35.

And then there was one! Shropshire buyers flock to snap up Shrewsbury town houses... The Clarendon
3 bedroom home
There are two show homes available to view at the location, which is situated just off the A5, the three-bedroom Southwold and five-bedroom Arundel.
In total there are nine house types available to buy on the Shrewsbury development including three, four and five beds.
Kerry said: “There really is something for everyone at Bowbrook Meadows. All our house types are being snapped up quickly, from the three-bedroom homes to the fivebeds, and the purchasing schemes mean there is a lot of support out there for homebuyers at different steps on the property ladder, including first-time buyers and upsizers.”
Homebuyers need to act quickly to secure a new-build town house at a popular location in Shropshire, with a busy summer selling season leaving only one left to purchase.
Families and couples are leading the way in buying the homes at Bowbrook Meadows in Shrewsbury, and now there is only one Clarendon house type available at the Bovis Homes development. Kerry Dolman, sales advisor Bowbrook Meadows, said:
at
“Homebuyers will have to be quick if they’re interested in the Clarendon. It’s proved so popular that there’s only one left - and it really is the perfect home for the right person, couple or family.”
The three-bedroom town house The Sherin gham boasts open-plan living, 3 bedroom home including a sitting room and dining area with French doors to the garden, plus a master bedroom with an en suite. Available from £279,995, it has a good-size kitchen, a family bathroom upstairs and a garage for extra parking space.
“We’re delighted but not surprised at the huge local interest in Bowbrook Meadows,” added Kerry. “While the town houses are almost gone, we still have a range of properties and purchasing schemes available on the site and buyers can come and view our show homes and talk to our sales team to find out more.”
There are four schemes available for properties at Bowbrook; Help to Buy, Home Exchange, Smooth Move and Home Reach, and buyers should be able to find one to suit them. Home Reach, for example, allows purchasers to secure a property on a part-buy, part-rent basis, starting at a 50 per cent share.
Purchasers could also use Help to Buy with a five per cent deposit backed by a 20 per cent Government-backed equity loan; Home Exchange which involves Bovis Homes buying your property in a part-exchange deal; or Smooth Move meaning Bovis Homes does all the hard work and pays the estate agent fees.
