e Review

e Charles Darwin by Luke Smith

Sundays are about spending time with the family and having a relaxing day and with that comes the must have Sunday dinner. My wife Ashleigh and I both love a Sunday dinner, but after a long hard week at work we decided on this occasion, it would be great to get someone else to do the work for us. After thinking about where to go to enjoy a roast, an idea popped into our heads – we had heard that there was somewhere in Shrewsbury that actually delivers a Sunday roast straight to your door. e Charles Darwin has a reputation for serving great Sunday dinners in their restaurant but now they will also package one up and deliver it to you, still piping hot, so you can have a lazy day in front of the TV with lunch delivered.

I gave Cathy a call at e Charles Darwin and asked what the choices were for today, we had to choose from the following; slow roasted beef or slow roasted gammon, chicken breast or pork with onion and sage gravy. All of the choices are served with vegetables, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. Ashleigh decided to go for the chicken breast with carrots and peas and I went for the slow roasted beef with all the trimmings. I wasn’t sure what to expect as this isn’t something we have done before, and wondered how the whole process of delivering a gravy dinner would work! We requested delivery for 13:30pm and bang on time it was delivered to us. e two boxes were wrapped in cling film and foil to keep it nice and hot and the driver was very polite and friendly.

e Sunday Lunch has evolved. You can enjoy a full Sunday Lunch, without the hassle of buying and preparing all of the necessary ingredients, or having to get ready to go out to enjoy one in the restaurant.

We couldn’t wait to see what our dinner was like, and we were in for a treat. To start with my beef dinner was excellent, piping hot, and the food quality was good. e slow roasted beef melted in my mouth and the huge Yorkshire pudding was crunchy - which is just how I like it. e mash potato was creamy and roast potatoes were great. e veg finished it off really well. Ashleigh’s chicken breast dinner was equally as good, the chicken was tender, and the rest of the lunch was great too. We were glad we had given this service a whirl, as it’s great to have the option of a full Sunday dinner, without the hassle of buying and preparing all of the necessary ingredients, or having to get ready to go out to enjoy one

in the restaurant – a service we will definitely be taking advantage of again in future. We would recommend ordering a roast dinner from the Charles Darwin, and at just £7.95 each or two lunches for just £12 the price is great too. A good quality lunch - with no hassle. 3 courses are also available for just £10 and over the Christmas period there will be a special Christmas menu available at just £15 for 3 courses. You can also enjoy the carvery at the restaurant itself, or a hearty breakfast, plus they have now introduced afternoon teas to their menu. As well as all this they have a function room available for hire, which is suitable for all occasions, including birthday parties, christenings, wedding receptions and funeral wakes, at a very reasonable price. e Charles Darwin offers it all.

The Shed Interview_Full Page Bleed New 19/10/2018 10:18 Page 1

Nostalgic Concepts - Modern Innovation We Meet Tim Franklin - Owner of e Shed Cocoa Room in Shrewsbury e Shed – Cocoa Room is Shrewsbury’s smallest antiques and coffee shop, nestled in the heart of Abbey Forgate; it is one of the most perfect places to sit back and unwind. Owner Tim Franklin took time out of his busy schedule to tell us a little bit about himself and explain his passion - not just for the food and beverage industry, but about running a business and at the same time enjoying family life as well... Where did you grow up?

I was born in Wolverhampton, but have spent most of my life living in Shropshire after moving here at a young age. Being a farming county, I think that this fed my passion for food and helped steer me towards the food and drinks industry.

What is your food and drink background?

After studying art at university, I fell into hospitality by accident like so many people in this industry do. I was in need of a job and got offered a bartending position in a town bar and haven’t looked back since. Working in bars is the main foundation and contributing factor for how I work now. I base my business around the drinks side and I am always thinking of new flavour combinations. I enjoy trying to push boundaries; changing nostalgic concepts and reinventing them. While working on bars, I spent a lot of time working on molecular mixology and trying to mix science with drinks, and I was lucky to work in a range of properties around the UK and learned a variety of styles and techniques off some very talented chefs and knowledgeable bartenders.

When did you decide you wanted to run your own business?

From a young age I had always wanted to be my own boss. I have always had my own ideas which I wanted to put into a business and to have an open creative palette to work with - without the constraints of managers above.

Where were you trained and how difficult was your training?

Most of my training was on the job training and courses in my spare time. Practical training has always worked for me better. If you show me something I will pick it up quicker than from theory.

How do you get your inspiration?

I spend a lot of time down in London and have family in the USA so try to see what is happening in the world of drinks and food trends, from as broad an aspect as possible and then redesign and reconcile aspects of it together to create new food and drinks. I like to try and push my creativity and make up drinks that wouldn’t necessarily be sold in the shop but ideas and finished drinks come from that experimenting and concept work.

Best piece of advice you would give if you want to run your own business?

The biggest piece of advice is - work in the area you want to open up in. You need a base working knowledge before attempting to open your own business. If you know how to make drinks in a bar for example it will be easier to run a bar because you know what to look out for and how to work all of the different areas, instead of going into it blind. The second bit of advice is to be prepared to make mistakes and learn from them and don’t be scared to make mistakes; failure is a great teacher.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

My plan for the future involves expansion. In what form that comes I am still planning but I now have a little boy, and the next generation to develop the business in the future, so things may change and he might have ideas as he grows up for the business that we can work with and develop together -which I look forward to. I just have to get him working on the coffee machine first.

What do you do in your spare time?

My spare time is spent with my little boy and having as much quality time with him as I can.

One last question, if you had one day to create one food item and what would it be?

If I had one full day to cook it would be my great grandmas beef stew. It takes hours to cook and prepare so I don’t get chance to make it very often, but it is worth the work and brings back a lot of memories.

‘Shrewsbury Prison Scream Park’ - the only Scream Park in Shropshire. Shrewsbury Prison Scream Park is a fully immersive scare, horror and action event; designed and operated by Immersive Events (SCAR Award winners, Best Zombie Experience Event 2018). Bringing you 6 fully immersive, spine tingling, hair raising, horror experiences.

Experience the true horror of the Halloween season at Shrewsbury Prison Scream Park, Shropshire's Ultimate Halloween attraction. Shrewsbury Prison Jailhouse Tours is a unique and scary maze that strips all visitors of their sense of security. Not knowing what was lurking behind the door, we entered our first maze of the night. The Cell.

Strobe lights. Escaped prisoners. Darkness. Separated into a group of six, we entered the doors only to be greeted by a very angry prison guard. Without hesitation, he forced us into the room knowing what awaited us. Making our way through the maze, prisoners jumped out at us or, even worse, stood waiting for us. Seeing the fear on our faces, they chased us straight out.

Adrenaline running, we headed to the next maze. The Jamboree. As you can imagine, this circus themed maze held most people’s nightmares. Circus tents, Jack in the box and more importantly, clowns; watching, waiting, studying your every move, knowing just when to jump out. Finally escaping, we wasted no time heading to Experimental.

Complete darkness. No idea what was to come. We could only listen to every sound around us. Imagining what was happening. Or more importantly, what was about to happen.

We had one instruction; hold onto the rope and don’t let go. So we didn’t. Even when we felt someone’s breath near our ears, or someone else’s hand on the rope. We held on, and sped up.

Quickly escaping another maze, we headed straight for another. This time, we didn’t know what to expect. Meat market. What could this room possibly hold? Even our wildest guesses were wrong. We were greeted by a woman talking all about her delicious varieties of meats. What meat? One could only imagine. We were then left to our own devices, in search for the man they call the butcher. He was not happy to have guests and we were soon on our way to the next room. A man who looked even angrier. He definitely didn’t want all of us staring at him. The more we stared, the angrier he got. As we soon found out. Running from this room, trying to catch our breath, we made our way to our final maze of the night.

A scare maze wouldn’t be complete without a ghost hunt. But this was no ordinary hunt. A room with only a woman and two doors. With nowhere to go, we waited. She could feel a presence. And with that, it went dark. And the presence was soon felt by all.

Jailhouse tours is unlike any other scare maze. With a variety of rooms to choose from, you can create your own scary adventure. Or if you’re feeling braze, you can try and conquer them all. With brilliant acting by everyone involved, this is definitely a scare maze you want to experience. Every person involved stayed in character at all times, making the atmosphere even more believable and keeping us in suspense for the whole evening.

If you haven’t been yet, you definitely should go. But be sure to take someone with you. We made our own group along the way and experienced each maze together, not wanting to lose anyone from our team. We came as a two, but left as a six.

Shop Local Feature

Tis’

the Season to Shop Local

Shrewsbury has more independant shops than you can shake a candy cane at, which is perfect when it comes to sorting out Christmas gift shopping, but also great for your everyday needs...

There are lots of benefits to shopping with a local business, rather than going to a large chain store. Choosing to shop with a small local independent business can help improve the local economy and increase job opportunities. Local businesses are the backbone of the local economy, spending locally helps money to circulate throughout local businesses allowing the whole community to thrive.

When you visit Shrewsbury, shopping should definitely be on your list of things to do, there are endless boutiques and quirky independents, all tucked away in the crooked medieval alleyways that criss-cross the town centre. Take time to discover Wyle Cop- the longest row of uninterrupted independent shops winding up the hill, where you will find everything from designer clothing and jewellery to vintage finds and flowers.

Shrewsbury High Street is lined with an eclectic range of independent shops and there is an abundance of cafes, giving you plenty of choice for a well-earned coffee stop along the way.

16

Shrewsbury's Pride Hill features national names including high street fashion, food and drink and health and beauty. Whether you are shopping for Christmas gifts, or just stocking up on your basic essentials, Pride Hill has everything that you might need.

Leading off Pride Hill, Butcher Row was once home to the town’s butchers. Today it is lined with independent eateries and shops. You should head to Butcher Row and Fish Street if you’re looking for a new hairstyle or perhaps to take a peek at some antique jewellery in County Goldsmiths, Shropshire's largest suppliers of Victorian, Art Deco, Edwardian and Vintage pieces that are pre-loved. Further along the street you’ll find White Orchard, which is a one stop shop for home wares, children's gifts, garden accessories and more.

Why not make it your mission to buy as much as you can from your local shops, from presents and wrapping paper to food and drink. Support your local town and enjoy all of the benefits of being part of creating a thriving community. Christmas time at

Oswestry Market... There are a number of events on in Oswestry over the coming months. Kicking things off for the festive period is the Christmas Light Switch On, on Thursday 22nd November. From 4pm the local schools and musical groups will perform on the large stage, held on the Bailey Head to celebrate the switching on of the Christmas Lights by a special guest.

Following the switch on there will be a Shropshire Produce Market on Saturday 24th November in the town centre, with handpicked Shropshire based food and craft producers selling the best the County has to offer, and then on 30th November, an Artisan Market with a collection of quality local craft and food producers, held at the Bailey Head - both between 9am and 3pm.

Christmas gets into full swing on Saturday 1st December from 11am, with the Oswestry Christmas Parade. Now the summer is coming to a close, its a good time to start thinking about how you are going to care for your skin throughout the autumn and winter months.

So, what are the ideal treatments to have throughout the autumn and winter months to ensure our skin is healthy and looking even better next summer?

w Juvederm Volite

Juvederm Volite is the world’s first ever dermal filler that actually improves the hydration and quality of your skin. It effectively smooths and hydrates whilst simultaneously improving the texture, tone and brightness - improving skin health from within. Volite contains Hyaluronic Acid, a naturally occurring molecule made by our bodies that is responsible for water retention in our skin. Volite improves hydration and elasticity by stimulating your body’s own collagen production, leading to an improvement in overall skin quality. Volite can be used to smooth, hydrate and increase elasticity in the skin on your face, neck, decolletage and hands. A single treatment will leave you with smoother, radiant and hydrated skin. Results typically last 9-12 month. From £395.

SHIFNAL

SUPER IPL TREATMENT w Super IPL

Humans have had a problem with hair for thousands of years. Plucking, waxing and needle epilation are all temporary and needle epilation is only capable of treating one hair at a time.

Excess hair may be the result of medical conditions, but the pressure to remove it may be cosmetic. Cultural norms and peer group pressure often require the removal of hair in certain regions such as the face, axillae (armpits), legs and bikini line for women, and the chest and back for men. Our Super IPL treatment is 10 times faster than standard IPL. It is clinically-proven, safe and effective, giving long-term removal of unwanted hair and is effective on all skin types. Treatments start at just £30. Offer! Buy 5 sessions of IPL and get the 6th session free.

w eDS Dermastamp

eDS DERMASTAMP

The multi-award winning eDS dermastamp microneedling treatment is a firm favourite of ours. Using medical grade, German engineered microneedles, the device produces thousands of microneedle columns in the skin, which in turn stimulates the skin to naturally regenerate and repair itself. This treatment is idea for the treatment of fine lines around the delicate eye area and results are not only smoother, brighter rejuvenated skin, but it can also lead to an improvement in the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks. Single treatments start at just £120.

w Sun protection and SPF

We often think of protecting our skin from UVB when its sunny, but damaging UVA, infrared-A and visible light radiation is present everyday, all year round. They penetrate the cloud and even glass. High energy visible light (HEV) from our mobile phones and computer screens are also contributing to premature skin ageing. Therefore it is really important not to neglect your skin when it comes to protecting it. We recommend wearing a factor 50 SPF everyday throughout the autumn and winter months, such as Heliocare 360° which is proven to protect the skin from UVA, UVA and Infrared-A. Park Street Clinic are official stockists of Heliocare and Heliocare 360°.

Festive Tipples.

Classic Christmas Drinks

Apple Pie Cocktail... WARM APPLE PIE COCKTAIL

To make 2 servings you'll need: 60ml vanilla vodka. 60ml whiskey. 240ml apple cider. 2 tablespoons of sugar 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon honey, sliced apple and cinnamon stick

Mulled Wine... Christmas in a glass... e very thought of the cold winter months is enough to make me reach for the brandy, though any excuse will do. ere are a few special drinks that I really look forward to around the Christmas period though, the Hot Toddy with it’s warm, soothing honey and lemon, classic Egg Nog and the sumptuous Apple Pie Cocktail are my favourites. For me they are the taste of Christmas all mixed up together in a glass - heaven.

THE HOT TODDY

For a single glass you'll need: 3/4 cup of water 50ml (1 shot) whiskey 2-3 teaspoons of fresh lemon juice 2-3 teaspoons of honey 1 lemon round 1 cinnamon stick

It is so easy to make, just boil your water and pour into your glass/cup. en add

the whiskey, honey and lemon juice and stir until the honey has dissolved into the hot water. en pop the lemon round and cinnamon stick in to finish. If you prefer, you can use dark rum or brandy instead of whiskey.

First mix the sugar and cinnamon and place on a shallow plate. Rim the glasses with honey and dip into the mixture. Combine the vodka, whiskey and apple cider in a pan a warm through mixing together thoroughly. Pour into glasses over some apple slices and to finish add a cinnamon stick - it’s truly delicious.

MULLED WINE WITH GIN

For sensational mulled wine you'll need: 1 bottle red wine 60ml gin 60g demerara sugar 1 cinnamon stick grated nutmeg 1 dried bay leaf 2 oranges cut into slices

To enjoy the perfect mulled wine simply put the wine in a saucepan with the orange, sugar, bayleaf and the spices. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved and more sugar to taste if required. Remove from the heat and stir in the gin of your choice. Strain into heatproof glasses while it is still warm. Garnish with fresh slices of orange or some fresh cranberries.

Can you help small animals in need?.. Rainbow rescue is a small scale family run rescue centre based in Telford. We are fully self funded and rely solely on donations from the public and help from our volunteers. We take in, care for, rehabilitate and re-home smaller animals such as Guinea Pigs, Rabbits, Chinchillas, Ferrets, Hamsters, Cats, Kittens, etc.

We are always in need of old newspapers and shredded paper, hay, rabbit food, cat food and litter. However, in these colder months we need extra blankets, bedding, towels and cosy cat/dog beds to keep the animals warm. We also need cat/pet bowls, cat toys and rabbit water bottles and hay racks due to our expansion to care for more animals.

Donations can always be dropped off at- The Brewery Inn, High Street, Coalport, Telford, TF87HZ. It is always best to call first on- 01952 581225 to check opening times. We are always extremely grateful for anything donated to us. Monetary donations can be made directly to our vetsVETS4PETS MADELEY where we have an account; these donations will help with the monthly vet bills for wormer, flea treatments, neutering and other operations or treatment.

Check out our Facebook page - https://www.facebook. com/rainbowrescuetelford for more information on us, what we do and how you can help us. We run a regular tombola and raffle at The Brewery Inn and always need prizes to raise much needed funds.

Contact can be made with us via Facebook by messaging our page or by calling 01952 581225 and leaving a message for the centre. We always try and respond as soon as possible but please remember we are run by volunteers who also work full time and have other commitments.

Viewings are ALWAYS by appointment only to ensure at least 2 volunteers are on site to comply with our insurance regulations. When the centre is full and we are unable to take an animal in we will help by giving advice and recommending other centres that may have space. We would like to thank The Brewery Inn for sponsoring our advert in this publication.

Recipes

Churros

& Chocolate Dip Method 1 - Add 350ml of boiling water into a jug, with the melted butter and vanilla extract. Place the flour and baking powder into a large bowl and add a pinch of salt. Pour in the contents of the jug and quickly beat with a wooden spoon until there are no lumps. Set aside for 10-15 mins. 2 - Mix the caster sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl. 3 - Fill a large deep saucepan one-third full of oil. Always take care when cooking with hot oil. Heat to 175C. Using a large star nozzle on a piping bag, fill with the dough and pipe the churros directly into the oil, snipping off with kitchen scissors. Make each churro about 10cm long. Fry until golden brown and crisp but watch out for air bubbles in the churros as they can explode, especially if the oil overheats or you use old flour. 4 - Once the churros are crisp and golden brown, remove them from the oil with a slotted spoon and drain on a kitchen paperlined tray. Carry on cooking the dough in batches. 5 - Coat the cooked churros with the cinnamon sugar as you go. To serve, toss with any remaining cinnamon sugar and serve with chocolate dipping sauce.

LOVE CHOCOLATE...

It is finally time to celebrate chocolate, as scientists have recently said that eating chocolate can actually be good for us! In moderation - 3 bars a month - one of life’s little pleasures can cut a person’s risk of heart failure by 13 percent. Natural compounds in chocolate called Flavonoids are believed to boost blood vessel health and help reduce inflammation. Don’t get carried away though, as people who eat chocolate daily can see their risk of heart failure increase by 17 percent.

CHOCOLATE Dipping Sauce is simple chocolate dipping sauce is easy to make, and deliciously naughty - Perfect with churros!

Ingredients 200g Dark Chocolate 100ml Double Cream 100ml Whole Milk 3 Tbsp Golden Syrup ½ Tsp Vanilla Extract

Method 1 - Break the dark chocolate up into chunks. 2 - Place the chunks of chocolate, along with the cream, milk, golden syrup and vanilla extract into a pan and gently melt together, on a low heat. 3 - Stir occasionally until you have a smooth shiny sauce. Keep warm on a low heat. Serve warm with fresh homemade churros, for an extra special treat that the whole family will love.

Firework Phobia in Pets

Bonfire night is fast approaching, although for us this is an exciting time of year, the same cannot be said for our pets. Many animals will find the noise and flashes created from fireworks frightening and very stressful. There are several things that can be done to help keep our pets feeling calm and safe during this time, have a read through our advice and see what you can do help your pet. After all it’s not just for the one evening, firework season will continue over Christmas and New Year.

There are some basic things you can start with at home, including:

• Make sure all dogs and cats are kept inside, lock your cat flaps and keep all windows and doors tightly shut to prevent pets from escaping. • Keep curtains drawn and place on the TV and radio, this will help block out some of the sound and visual effects. • Create a den, our cats and dogs like to hide away to help make themselves feel more secure. Place in their favourite toys and something of yours, the familiar smells will help them a feel a little more at ease. You can create this den earlier so that your pet gets used to it. • Try to act normally! If they want to pace around a little and find new hiding spots let them. The more you stress around them, the more stressed they will become, if you are relaxed it will help them do so too. • It’s also a good time to make sure your pets identification details are up to date! Just in case they manage to escape. Check your microchip details, collars and tags to ensure that all the details are correct.

It’s not just our cats and dogs that get worried, don’t forget about your smaller pets too:

• This can include our rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents and birds! • If possible hutches/enclosures should be moved out of the open, whether this be a room in the house or just into a shed or garage. • If you are unable to move your pets hutch/enclosure cover over with blankets, this will help deaden the noise and block out the sight of the fireworks. You could also turn the opening of the hutch towards the fence/wall so it’s not facing the open garden. • Provide plenty of extra bedding to allow for effective burrowing, this will help them feel a little safer.

Sometimes these general precautions aren’t enough for our more nervous animals. There are lots of products on the market designed to help calm and relieve anxiety. These include Adaptil and Feliway products, that come in plug-in diffusers, sprays and collars. For more advice on which product might be best suited to your pets needs, please do not hesitate to speak to us at any of our Severn Edge Vet branches.

Also spare a thought for our wildlife this firework season! If you’re building bonfires check them before lighting to make sure there are no little friends hibernating inside. Make sure all firework rubbish is disposed of properly, if left around it can become a hazard.

Christmas Dining... It’s not all trees, tinsel and fairy lights, Christmas is also a time of year for dinner parties and celebrating over eggnog and mulled wine - which also means setting the scene with a picture-perfect, rustic dining table. Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice, shares her 4 best ideas on putting together a warm, inviting dining setting that celebrates Christmas.

Trendy Tips to Style your Christmas Dining Table

1. GO BIG WITH THE TABLE

Start with an excellent foundation: a good table. “Dark wood is perennially elegant and classic - look for a sturdy table that will stand the test of time, but also has interesting details, such as a charming pedestal or trestle,” advises Rebecca. And then layer on a bold, attention-grabbing centrepiece- something that gives the dining room a visual focus. This approach also reduces decor work, since it will do most of the heavy lifting. “This could be as simple as being artful about how food is arranged on the table, for a visual (and literal) feast. But for a change, it can be about what’s above the table and not on it. Rather than having decor take up space on the table, consider hanging the baubles and lights from the ceiling - this also has the effect of opening up the space, adding a sense of airiness, height and drama.”

3. DON'T FORGET THE FINER DETAILS

2. EMBRACE NATURAL ELEMENTS

Neutrals are always chic and a great starting point for any table setting- white and silver tableware are always on-trend- but the trick is in dressing it up. “For this time of year, setting a festive dining table just wouldn’t be complete without some glitz and shine,” says Rebecca. “Using brass and gold in strategic doses adds warmth and glamour in equal measure. Consider golden candle holders and even gold ribbons for the napkins as easy ways to integrate this into the overall look.”

An easy step to dressing up the dining table is by taking a leaf out of nature’s playbook – literally. “Natural elements are classic Christmas staples, so to update the style, it’s about being more adventurous and creative in the approach,” says Rebecca. “Even simple details like rosemary and cinnamon sticks can add an organic, chic touch to napkin arrangements, while wreath chandeliers are becoming a modern go-to look.” For a bigger and more dramatic take, why not combine the best of both worlds with a statement DIY: a hanging wooden branch centrepiece immediately adds character, visual texture, and festive impact to your dining room. “These creative touches are not just a subtle nod to the wild outdoors, but they’re also easy to craft and personalize as fun holiday activities.”

During this special time of year, Christmas feasts should be delicious – and pretty too! “Details go a long way, especially with the table setting,” Rebecca advises. “Get creative with unexpected prints, patterns, and colours on smaller elements like tableware and napkins. And as for colour: silver, blues and greys can lend a soft, luxe touch, while deeper hues like emerald and burgundy set the tone for a glamorous, festive meal. Neutral tones are also perfect as a background for more dramatic accent colours. Sunny shades like yellow provide a cheerful burst of creativity, while giving your space charm and personality. And when it comes to dialling up the comfort, layer in different textures. Think ements like a plush sofa, soft throws and even a fluffy faux fur rug for a huge boost in cosiness.”

4. ADD SOME SPARKLE TO A NEUTRAL SETTING

Book Worms... A black country girl who loves to read. I don’t think I have ever loved and hated a book as much as this fantastic piece of work by Amy Reed. Not because I disliked the story, the writing was fantastic and the message of the book was extremely empowering, but because when I got to the end of the book, which was just last night, I felt so angry and frustrated. is isn’t a book I would typically choose to read, as I have said many of times, romance books are my thing. But, my resolution for this year is to broaden my reading tastes and read different styles of books. So, when I saw on Twitter the discussions surrounding this particular book, I knew I had to add it to my TBR pile. e Nowhere girls sees a new girl arrive in a corrupt town where she learns the girl whose room she now occupies, was ran out of town when she spoke out after being gang raped by the popular guys at school. Along with her two friends, they decide to form a group, e Nowhere Girls’, who are determined to change the way men treat females at their school and the attitude surrounding rape culture. I love the diversity of the three main characters. Grace, a quiet and shy girl whose mother is a pastor but was run out of their old town for her liberalist views, Rosina is Mexican and gay and has a tough home life as she struggles with her relationship with her mother, and Erin, who has Asperger’s and is hiding her own struggles and secrets. ey are three girls who you wouldn’t put together as friends, but their friendship is strong and

beautiful and it made me want to join their group. I think every girl reading this book will be able to relate to a part of each character, because I know I certainly did. I found the experts from ‘e Real Men of Prescott’ blog extremely difficult to read. e way this person spoke about women was downright disgusting and I was so upset and angry reading them. I think even more so because there are men who actually have these views. What this book made me realise, in quite an upsetting and shocking way, is you can’t always trust and rely on those who are meant to protect you. I found it awful how the Principal, Sheriff and almost every other person in authority were so eager to sweep the allegations under the carpet and blame e Nowhere Girls for being the problem. Victim blaming is rife in this book and unfortunately, this is the stark reality. If you read this book with the idea that justice will eventually be served at the end, you couldn’t be more wrong. At times the book makes for uncomfortable reading, but it’s realistic, honest, raw, but most of all empowering. is book is a fine example of what can happen when girls lay aside their differences and support each other, regardless of their opinions and backgrounds. It’s an example of what happens when girls finally realise that they deserve to be treated better and demand respect. is a book that every female should read. is book is so powerful and deserves five out of five stars.

e Beauty Edit... Keep aesthetic treatments safe this Christmas! You practitioner should be happy with tell you who they are insured with and what procedures they are covered to carry out. Insurance companies will only cover practitioners for treatments following successful completion of accredited courses. Continued professional development is compulsory for all registered healthcare professionals in the UK and your practitioner should be happy to discuss any future training courses they plan to attend to keep their knowledge and skills up-to-date.

Is aftercare included?

Not all complications happen immediately. It is important to find out what support will be available to you once you leave the clinic. This is particularly important in the first few days after treatment when the most serious complication are more likely to occur. A good practitioner will provide comprehensive aftercare advice and ensure that support is readily available. This means someone should be contactable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and ready to respond if needed.

What products are being used?

With so many cheap dermal fillers flooding the market, it is important to question what is being injected into you. The world’s leading manufacture has recently added a hologram to it’s boxes to combat the growing problem of counterfeit products. We recommend choosing FDA approved products as these have undergone extensive safety testing over long periods of time. Your practitioner should be happy to discuss the products they use and where they source these from.

Non-surgical treatments have advanced so much in recent years. From changing the shape of your nose to contouring the body, there are now viable non-surgical alternatives to going under the knife. Cheaper than surgery and with little to no down-time, what’s not to like? There are so many practitioners offering cosmetic injectable treatments. So, what should you consider before trusting someone with your precious face? The following points will help you to recognise and choose a safe practitioner.

What training, experience and qualification do they have?

Just like surgical alternatives, these treatments are not without risk, even in the most experienced hands, complications do occur. For this reason, it is advisable to choose a healthcare professional with the appropriate training. A doctor, nurse or dentist are ideal choices, as they have years of training and an excellent understanding of anatomy & physiology. You can check if your practitioner is a registered healthcare professional by searching the GMC, NMC and GDC websites.

76 | Safe Aesthetics

Whoever you choose to carry out your treatments, please do your research and keep these points in mind. Remember, this is your face so please don’t just head for the cheapest deal. It may well cost you more in the long run. I hope this helps you to make the right choice for you and stay safe this festive season.

Rolling Back e Years Caci Non-Surgical Facelift... Pic: Jenny Kinney - Caci Expert carrying out the Caci Synergy Treatment.

At the ripe old age of 47, my face is beginning to show telltale signs that I’ve been around a while... With the benefit of experience comes the inevitable signs of ageing, crows feet, eye bags and jowls that sag a little more than they used to. I admit I am relying on Snapchat filters to get me through these days but I am not quite ready to go under the surgeons knife yet, so I wanted to take a look at some other, less painful methods of rolling back the damage that the years have done to me. An invitation from Total Look Beauty to review the CACI Synergy facial treatment was just too good to pass up. is hightech system uses micro-electrical currents, applied through wands, which stimulate the muscles in the face, re-educating them, meaning they hold themselves up again, helping to ‘lift’ the face.

THE OPEN EVENING... We headed over to Total Look’s fabulous new salon on the busy open evening. ere was a buzz of excitement when we arrived, Jane Iredale was showcasing makeup tips and the benefits of nutritional supplements. A raffle in aid of Cancer Research gave the lucky winners a chance to win one of two amazing gifts from the Jane Iredale and Elemis ranges. Free massages were on offer from remedial deep tissue massage therapist Marianna, who will be taking bookings, operating out of the Total Look salon. We were made very welcome by Jo, and enjoyed a glass of champagne and some Canapés before we were introduced to Jenny, the CACI ‘expert’ who explained the process to me and settled me into the spacious treatment room. e whole process involves cleansing, gentle peeling, skin toning, and working on the wrinkles to smooth them out, first with the microcurrent probes and then with the 'wrinkle comb', a kind of high-tech wand that is

used to help plump out deeper wrinkles. It's not uncomfortable, and I personally found it to be a relaxing treatment, and the cooling mask applied at the end of the treatment felt amazing. I was impressed by just how clean my skin felt; that baby soft new skin feel that is difficult to achieve at the best of times. My eyebrows were noticeably lifted, widening my eyes and lifting my face. e contours of my face were also improved with less sagging around my jawline and neck - i felt at least a few of the years had been erased from my face and think it will be well worth returning for the further sessions to maximise the results and maintain this more youthful looking me.

Example of the results achieved with CACI Synergy from www.caci-international.co.uk

WHAT’S THE VERDICT? With visible results from a single CACI treatment, I was impressed; my skin looked plumper and had a healthy glow and my eyebrows felt lifted. ey recommend a course of 10 treatments for best results, which can seem expensive, but if you consider the alternatives of surgery, needles, anaesthetic and recovery/down time - which for many are the main down sides of surgical face lifts - it is a real alternative and well worth considering. Call Total Look Beauty Salon to book a consultation or to find out about our latest offers on 01743 741327.

The CACI Non-Surgical facial treatment is a muscle lifting procedure that uses microcurrent technology to send out tiny electrical impulses which, will lift and tone the facial muscles and the neck area, whilst improving skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. CACI Synergy is the latest version of this technology with pioneering S.P.E.D® Dual Action Technology* that delivers LED light therapy skin rejuvenation and microcurrent facial toning at the same time. The results are quite dramatic leaving the face with the most natural lift whilst rejuvenating the skin and boosting collagen production. A third party clinical study conducted by Cutest Systems Ltd compared traditional CACI microcurrent facial toning with CACI Synergy enhanced micro-current. Choo-Choo - All Aboard the Llangollen Winter Express...

In the infamous words of the Starks of Winterfell - Winter is coming... Luckily this year, we have had a long hot summer and if you think about it, it’s the cold winter days that make summer feel sooo amazing - right? In fairness there are some great things about winter; hot chocolate by the fire, cuddling up to watch a movie together, cosy sweaters and woolly socks, not to mention the whole Christmas shebang, when you can eat and drink as much as you like surrounded by your family and friends - pretty good stuff eh! ere is also a ton of special events for the whole family, from Christmas lights ‘switch-on’s’ where the pretty towns and villages are lit up with twinkling lights, Christmas fairs and markets selling everything you may need to make the festive season even more magical and Christmas parties to celebrate another year of work being over.

Feature | Winter in Shropshire

MAKE THE MOST OF IT... Just because it’s snowing, it doesn’t mean you can’t have some outdoor fun. Kids just love getting outside, no matter what the weather brings. Here are just a few fun winter activities that don’t cost a penny, but can give hours and hours of enjoyment:

•Have a snowball fight. •Build a snowman. •Go sledding. •Catch snowflakes on your tongue. •Make a snow angel. •Build a snow fort or an igloo! •Collect pine cones. •Make paper snowflake cut-outs. I admit that it’s not easy to get yourself outdoors in the winter. Most of us want to just hibernate indoors and turn into a hermit. It really important to try your best to get out of this mindset by making yourself go outside. And, once you’re out there, having fun, you will have a magical time - the kind you can only have when the snow comes.

Llangollen Railway have loads of special festive departures this winter; Ride the ‘Santa Special’ (Call or check the website for details). Get on board the ‘Real Ale Train’ on the 8th December, the ‘Mince Pie Special’ on 26th, 27th, 30th & 31st of Dec & 1st Jan or you can ride the ‘Winter Warmer’ on 28th & 29th Dec. To find out more or to book your tickets call: 01978 860979 or visit: www.llangollenrailway.co.uk. A magical experience.

Hyundai i30 Fastback.

SE Nav.

“e Hyundai i30 Fastback is not only a car to be seen in but is certainly one that is rewarding to drive... A rushing light of clouds and splendour....." Never did Shelley's immortal words seem more fit for purpose than when put to use in describing the sensation: aural, visual, tactile (and indeed olfactory - for we are talking of new-minted product) of experiencing first hand the new Hyundai i30 Fastback. And for those restaurant critics out there - no, you can't eat it though it looks as appetising as anything you've ever seen on a gilded platter at a noble banquet.

When times are uncertain people seek comfort in jelly-mould conformity. Just take a look at any passing stream of traffic and you will see what I mean. SUV sameness interspersed with the ice-cream block monotony of delivery vans rushing to destinations unknown as if desperate to arrive before they melt. How bold, therefore, of Hyundai to inject a welcome dash of revivifying style into a moribund theme. The i30 Fastback represents a modal modification of preconception, affirming in its purposeful poise, new and exciting

possibilities. The classic swagger of get-inspired dynamism as conveyed in the swooping, sweeping, stylish rear of this sweetly proportioned 5 door coupe, radiating a message as clear as sunshine, as bright as the chimes of a festive bell ringing through hearts and minds. It's a positive message speaking of life lived to the full, without fear of enjoyment; an encouraging message that heralds a long overdue return of dashing jollity to too-long repressed motoring lives.

Anoraks might protest when it comes to the rational process of decision making, but they are wrong. Romantic souls aspire always to better things and leave the pondering to pedants. No-one knows better than motor manufacturers that the best way to access the purchasers pocket is not to hammer out facts but rather tickle the fancy. And every now and then the fancy needs a sea-change. New air, new light, new inspiration needs to flood in and enliven stagnant waters, causing them once more to dance with twinkling reflections.

This is precisely what Hyundai have achieved with the i30 Fastback. The best news of all derives from the straight fact that this car, while offering sparkling design appeal, at the same time encapsulates good sense engineering wrapped in the safest surroundings. Spiced up handling and performance are there in abundance but never at the expense of safety and comfort. It makes for an irresistible package of good sense, style and fun that demands to be driven. As the clouds parted last Tuesday morning and as I was drawing on my stringback driving gloves, I heard the pattering of laboured feet and beheld the swelling sight of my neighbour Victoria Byron jogging towards me. She pretended to stop to look at the car but really had exhausted her reserves of athleticism. When she had regained her composure she appraised the car with a poetess's eye and to my surprise quoted lines familiar to every educated person. These she directed at the sleek lines of the car itself as it reposed

alongside the wheely bin: "O....thou breath of Autumns being." I took the hint, recognising in a flash the old Frank Ifield song 'The Wayward Wind'. "Let me guess" I said, "You're after a lift to the shops."

Later, as we cruised along broad leafy avenues she intimated that she was looking to buy a new car. Up 'til now she had been disillusioned with the fare on offer but was coming round to the view that an i30 Fastback made good sense. She was angling to drive the car. "Are you insured?" I asked. "Against every pitfall, pit bull and piston-slapping-pitterpat" she declared, thereby overriding any piteous protestations on my part; so I submitted. Settled at the wheel she familiarised herself with the numerous comfort and

driving aids. Miss Byron proved herself adept, revelling in the rorty performance and sporty handling. I told her that the 120PS 1.0 litre 3 cylinder engine driving through the slick six speed gearbox could take us to nearly 120mph - yet this £20,310 SE Nav version would return a claimed 54 mpg overall.

"This" she said, "Is not only a car to be seen in but is certainly one that is rewarding to drive. It Handles like a dream and is so lovely too. If only it kept you fit as well." she added in a wistful tone. "Are you saying" I suggested with a smile "That this car fits you well?" She changed down a gear and the responsive little engine gave a tigerish snarl as if to say 'I'm ready to pounce!' She then warned me in no uncertain terms that my sharp wit would prove my undoing.

" Well Miss Byron" I quipped, " You may be named after an illustrious poet but it's the first time I've been likened to a poet myself. If I read you correctly you are comparing me to Walt Whitman.

Her answer? She accelerated briskly. The result being that of a quack hack falling back under a flak attack in an i30 Fastback. I thanked my lucky stars that the safe and supportive passenger seat would protect me from poetic justice Much better I decided, to keep one's mouth shut and let the car do the talking - especially one so persuasively primed to please as the i30 Fastback with its 5 year warranty.
