When deciding on where to go out for dinner, I have to admit, The Olive Tree doesn’t automatically spring to mind and I have assumed in the past that the restaurant is for hotel guests, weddings & parties. I wish I had realised this wasn’t the case sooner. Head chef, Nigel Davis uses local meat and seasonal produce, wherever possible, which includes Cherrington Farm steaks, and food is always cooked fresh to order.

The Olive Tree is a stylish restaurant with conservatory, perfect for business lunches, family occasions or romantic dinners. Serving modern dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The setting is relaxing, and very pleasantly set, with an extensive seating area, contemporary décor and a modern ﬁre pit blazing at the very heart of it.

The welcoming staﬀ seated us and brought us some menus, as well as taking our drinks order, white wine for my friend, Surjit and a diet coke for me. On oﬀer is an exciting, frequently changing menu with individually priced dishes, as well as a carvery

menu at the weekend. There was an impressive range of dishes available and after struggling to choose, sweet chilli and honey flavoured salmon kebab was surj’s choice of starter and for me it had to be the flat mushrooms. For our main courses we chose curried slow braised lamb shank and pan fried fillet of sea bass.

When the first course arrived, it was presented impeccably, the salmon kebab was accompanied by pak choi, beansprouts and noodle salad whilst the sweet chilli and honey melted with the juicy flesh of the salmon bringing just a touch of perfection to an imperfect world. My flat mushrooms came with pancetta, sun blushed tomato and dolcelatte, all drizzled with pesto dressing, the meaty mushrooms were cooked beautifully and the dolcelatte gave it an added layer of flavour, which worked brilliantly. The main course arrived quickly; the curried lamb shank looked stunning and was composed with biryani rice and choto naan, a symphony for the taste buds. The lamb fell from the bone as soon as your fork touched it and melted on your tongue and my sea bass came with roasted fennel, curly kale, new potatoes, a selection of crunchy vegetables and a sublime sambuca dill cream sauce. This sophisticated dish had multiple layers of flavour.

Dessert was a must as I had spotted one of my favourites, blackcurrant panna cotta with a blackcurrant and cassis compote, with homemade doughnut crowning it gloriously, which was magniﬁcent whilst Surj, decided to opt for a selection of sorbets served in a wafer basket to round oﬀ the whole meal perfectly.

The Olive Tree at The Holiday Inn Telford - Ironbridge is a delightful restaurant, oﬀering excellent cuisine at very reasonable prices. It will deﬁnitely be a top contender for dining out in the future and with the quality of service is a must for dining out in Telford. A cold winter’s evening was about to get warmed up nicely, as the ideal opportunity to spice things up had arisen, at the award winning Spiceland restaurant at the heart of Wellington.

We were greeted by Sag Khan the owner, who took us to our table in the extensive seating area, which boasts an array of seating options, pleasant décor, soft lighting and a very comfortable atmosphere.

With menus and poppadum’s in hand, we surveyed the menu, which has a comprehensive range of dishes available to choose from traditional Indian cuisine with a touch of contemporary gastronomy to English dishes. Spiceland has won numerous awards over the years such as ‘Gold Awards’ for food standards, ‘Five Star Awards’ for hygiene plus a ‘Platinum Award’ for their Healthy Eating Menu, which is connected to Jamie Oliver himself!

We studied the options and made our choices, eventually opting for Lamb Chops and Mixed Platter starters and Monkﬁsh Roshon and Murgee Mirchi for the main course, accompanied by a generous portion of rice and Garlic and Coriander Naan to share.I was driving so had a soft drink, complete with tiny

umbrella and Stephan, my husband, had to have a Cobra beer, as has been his tradition for many years whenever he enjoys a curry. There is a wide range of drinks available with wines, spritzers, draught & bottled beers and spirits to choose from, as well as a good variety of soft drinks.

The starter arrived in no time, the presentation of the dishes is superb and they taste as good as they look. My Lamb Chops were juicy and tender, marinated in mild spices, skewered and grilled in an open ﬂame, charcoal oven and served with a fresh, crisp salad and mint sauce. The Mixed Platter with Chicken Tikka, Lamb Tikka and Sheek Kebab was right up Stephan’s street, beautifully aromatic and cooked to absolute perfection.

I was excited to try the main course, this being the first time I had tried fish in a curry and I was certainly not disappointed, the fish was spiced elegantly, with chunky white flesh and the mixture of flavours was warming, definitely a new favourite of mine. Stephan’s Murgee Mirchi had tender pieces of chicken cooked with spring onions, fresh coriander, finely chopped tomatoes, green chillies and mushrooms – a winning combination. The fresh flavours shone through with just enough

spice to ensure a second Cobra was needed, without being overbearing. We even managed to share a dessert, which ﬁnished the evening oﬀ beautifully.

In all, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it was easy to see why Spiceland is rated number 1 on Tripadvisor, the service received is second to none, attentive yet still relaxed and the food is delightful. Spiceland caters for all, with couples, families and larger groups all accommodated excellently. Sag, Chef Sengee Khan and the team work tirelessly to ensure ﬁrst class service and menus, ensuring they are continuously considered the ultimate dining experience in Shropshire. The course was enlightening and quickly realised his passion to open his own salon, successfully completing the training programme and qualifying in January. The first steps to finding your new best friend!

By Amy Watkins BSc BVetMed MRCVS from Severn Edge Vets Even before you go to visit your new companion your investigation work begins, you need to ensure the puppy or kitten you’re about to buy is happy and healthy! You can’t be too nosey, ring and ask questions! Did the breeder breed the puppies or kittens - it isn’t a good idea to buy from anyone other than the breeder. Who was the father (sire) and would he be present to visit? If not, find out if you can contact his owner; ask plenty of questions about his temperament, health and other litters. If you’re happy with the breeders and their answers, you need to visit. Always make sure you see mum with her offspring together, it’s often best to arrange a viewing when there’s more than one puppy / kitten to see. Do the puppies or kittens interact well together? Look for signs of illness such as runny eyes, sneezes or diarrhoea on their tails, also make sure mum is healthy and watch them all in their environment before making your choice.

There are lots of important pieces of information to find out about you new little one. Ask about its environment and routine, what does it eat and how often - ask to see a sample or a bag of food, can you buy this yourself or take some home? Where is the puppy or kitten kept, has it interacted with lots of people, has it been exposed to noises such as television, vacuum cleaners or children? A puppy, which has been in a quiet environment, may have to be carefully introduced to new experiences to make sure it doesn’t grow up afraid!

Find out about its medical history, have the puppies had their vaccinations, are they micro chipped? Has the litter been wormed? It’s worth doing a spot of research about your chosen breed also! Are there any problem diseases they are susceptible to, for example, British Short Haired cats can inherit certain heart deformities and Labrador Retrievers, unfortunately, can pass on genes for poor hip and elbow structure. Different breeds have different screening tests to make sure the chance of passing inherited diseases is low, ask to see certificates of screening for problem diseases, vaccinations, and micro chipping. When you are ready to choose an individual pet, don’t be rushed, spend plenty of time with the litter and watch the puppies or kittens grow – hopefully one of them will become your responsibility and will enrich your life for many years to come.

Hilbrae News was created as a means for all their supporters to keep up to date with the comings and goings of their rescue kennels. It is also a platform for supporters to share their experiences of rehoming dogs and proving that rescue dogs are not throw away rejects but dogs that have been failed by their owners in majority of circumstances. There are lots of dogs waiting for their ‘Forever Homes’ at Hilbrae, here are just a few examples of the success stories of dogs that found themselves at Hilbrae but found happiness with new families.

Ozzy...

Ozzy the Old English Sheepdog was at Hilbrae but found his forever home around two and a half years ago now. His owner says: “He has been amazing and even comes to work with me everyday, we love him to bits!” Ozzy is 11years old.

Yoshi...

Yoshi found his forever home back in September, last year. He is such a beautiful boy, his new family said: “We will look after him and spoil him”

Splodge...

Super girl Splodge has found herself a new home. “Splodge had been at Hilbrae for quite a while, so you can imagine how happy everyone is to ﬁnally see her with her new family in her new home”.

Do they find it hard to remember and carry out two or more instructions at a time? Is it difficult for them to concentrate on writing or reading without being distracted by what’s going on around them?

And are these challenges starting to have an impact on your child’s confidence and on their progress at school? If they are, have you wondered whether you child may be experiencing specific language and learning difficulties?

The speed of children’s learning and development may vary, but if your child experiences any of these challenges and they are persisting then it would be worthwhile investigating further. It may be that they have a dyslexic profile or there may be other reasons. A child with a dyslexic profile is just as bright and capable as their peers – sometimes brighter! Often they are highly imaginative and creative, and they may have exceptional technical skills. They can be quick ‘thinkers’ and ‘doers’.

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia can be described as a specific difference in the way that some individuals learn and process information. This can present difficulties in one or more of the following areas: • Spelling and written language • Reading • Motor skills • Short-term memory • Sequencing • Auditory or visual memory According to the British Dyslexia Association, 10 per cent of the population experience dyslexia to a greater or lesser extent. While children and adults with dyslexia share features in common, each individual’s profile is unique. Dyslexia as an advantage

The same dyslexic features that create academic challenges bring exceptional talents, which should be recognised and nurtured. Entrepreneurs are five times more likely to experience dyslexia and many architects, engineers, surgeons, sportspeople, actors, explorers and craftspeople have a dyslexic style.

There are clear advantages to early recognition of a dyslexic profile. This means that your child can start to learn and practise essential literacy skills using approaches that recognise their own individual strengths and style. Recognition gives children an earlier opportunity to learn simple techniques for managing concentration and stress anxiety, allowing their confidence, learning and potential to develop.

Does my child need an assessment for dyslexia?

An assessment is useful but not essential in every case. It can help to identify the way in which your child processes information as well as their strengths and weaknesses in literacy learning. Tutoring can be more carefully tailored to your child’s individual needs and style. How can I help?

Day 2016

North Shropshire College (NSC) will be holding its increasingly popular Spring Lambing Day on 20th March 2016; the College will be opening up its Walford Campus to visitors. Last year’s Spring Lambing Day attracted over 4000 visitors, who visited the College’s farm, animal care centre and engineering department. The farm’s 200 strong dairy herd took part in many milking displays and demonstrated the Fullwood Merlin milking robot, but the stars of the show were the lambs. Most born in the preceding month and some born on the day. Many of the popular attractions from last year will be making a welcome return in 2016, those returning are: Whitchurch Dog Display Team, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, Archery, NSC’s Robot Milking Display, Face Painting, Treasure Hunt etc. The extremely popular Animal Care Department at the Harris Centre, welcomed visitors last year who crowded around the Meerkat enclosure, and met the College’s wide array of reptiles, insects and spiders in the exotics room and even saw the College’s many Birds of Prey.

The entrance fee on the day will be £10 per car/family on foot, there will be free parking at the Walford Campus or at Corbet School with a park and tractor/trailer ride to the event.

Work placement is a big confidence booster for Charles... Teenage business student Charles Webb says his selfconfidence and communication skills have soared after receiving a glowing report from a work placement.

The 19-year-old, from Dothill in Telford, is on a level two Business Administration course at Telford College of Arts and Technology. As part of his studies, he was given a work placement at the Park Lane Centre in Woodside – and has returned with a top-class report from the team.

Jacqui Idiens, Centre Manager at the business and community meeting hub, said: “Charlie is a very enthusiastic and competent worker. He completed every task well, and was a pleasure to work with.” On his endof-placement assessment, he was rated either ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ in all 17 of the categories under observation.

Charles, a former Ercall Wood School student, said: “Initially, I felt I was unable to feel confident in performing tasks, but as I progressed, I realised that I was more able than I ever envisaged, which boosted my confidence and made me feel more secure in myself. “I have gained confidence in my communication skills which I hope will

prove to be an inspiration to other students who feel they are unable to fulfil their full potential.”

Charles said he chose to attend the Telford College Business Administration course because he previously studied a level three Extended Diploma in Art and Design. Asked what he would say to anyone considering signing up for a TCAT Business Administration course, Charles said: “It provides the student with a basis for future career opportunities and the qualifications that are required to gain them confidence in themselves and employability. “My time at TCAT has provided me with the skills, knowledge and understanding that have been required for my future career opportunities and employability.”

3 Medium Eggs, Beaten 100ml Milk 1 Tsp. Vanilla Extract 175g Golden Caster Sugar 200g Self-Raising Flour 50g Melted Butter For The Frosting - 100g Chocolate, Melted 200g Unsalted Butter, At Room Temperature 225g Icing Sugar, Sifted To Decorate - Orange Or Yellow Icing For Chicks & Black Writing Icing Tube

1. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases & heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Whisk together the eggs, milk and vanilla. Tip sugar into a big mixing bowl with the flour and mix. Add the whisked egg mixture, melted butter and chocolate, stir together until smooth. 2. Spoon into the cases until quite full and bake for 18-20 mins on a middle shelf until golden and a fork poked into the middle comes out clean. Cool the cakes on a wire rack. 3. To make the frosting, put the chocolate, butter and icing sugar in a big bowl and beat together with an electric whisk until just combined. 4. Spread some of the frosting generously over the top of the cooled cakes – you don’t have to go right to the edges. Once you’ve done all 12, scrape the rest of the icing into a piping bag fitted with a fine nozzle, and pipe a ring around the top edge to make a nest. 5. Make a baby chick by moulding oval shapes with yellow icing and then make little beaks from the orange icing and sticking on with a little runny black icing when you add the eyes. Place the baby chicks into the middle of each cake and enjoy.

Method

1. Heat grill to medium and line the grill pan with foil. Beat the egg white on a plate with a little salt and pepper.

2. Tip the Parmesan onto another plate and dip the chicken ﬁrst in egg white, then the cheese. Grill the coated chicken for 10-12 mins, turning once until browned and crisp.

2. Meanwhile, boil the potatoes for 10 mins, adding the peas for the ﬁnal 3 mins, then drain. Toss the vegetables with the spinach leaves, vinegar, oil and seasoning to taste. Split between four warm plates, then serve with the chicken.

Method

1. Combine the olive oil, garlic and rosemary in a small bowl. Stir well and brush the chops with the ďŹ&#x201A;avoured oil on both sides generously. 2. Use a preheated ridged griddle pan on a medium to high heat to cook perfect lamb chops. 3. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side - the meat should still be slightly pink on the inside. Serve with mashed potatoes and a selection of veggies like carrots, asparagus or minted garden peas. So simply and oh so tasty!

“The construction of quality bespoke joinery is our speciality.” Conservatories, windows, doors, wooden ﬂooring, staircases, traditional sliding sash windows etc. can be constructed of either hardwood or softwood and tailored to suit the customers taste and design requirements. Bespoke Joinery Individually tailored internal and external joinery. Products such as conservatories, entrance porches, patio doors, internal and external doors and frames, sash and traditional windows, staircases, kitchen unit doors and many more products are all hand made on site. These can be constructed of hardwoods such as Sapele, Oak, Ash, Idigbo etc. Or best quality unsorted joinery such as softwood.

A cutting and wood machining service is also provided. Sheet materials such as plywood, MDF or laminate can be cut to your requirements. Softwood and hardwoods can be machined to the customers spec. Mouldings such as architraves, skirting boards and picture rail can usually be duplicated in a variety of timbers such as oak, sapele, utile and unsorted joinery quality softwood to name but a few. A range of timbers are kept in stock, although some of the more unusual ones are only ordered on request. We can assist in all areas of design for all project sizes, and, to suit all budgets. Our wealth of knowledge and experience in the

Spring Cleaning Tips 10 Quick Tips for Putting Spring Into Your Home...

Kick start spring cleaning with these easy tips. Your home will feel good as new... 1. Freshen Up Your Fabrics: Wash mattress pads, pillow coverings, and pillows from all of your family’s beds. Check the labels for special instructions. Also do your bath mat, shower curtain, and even curtain liners on a gentle cycle. 2. Microwave Magic: Fresh lemons smell clean, right? Cut one into four and then place the pieces in a microwaveable bowl with some water to cover. Cook on high power for a couple of minutes. This will help to soften dried on food inside, whilst giving you a glorious citrus scent. 3. Fridge Fæs: Grab the bin and ditch spoiled food, old condiments and limp veggies. Remove all the glass shelves and draws and give them a good wash with bleach and a sponge. Don't forget the exterior door front and handle. 4. Cut The Clutter: Have a really good de-clutter of the kitchen cupboards, throw away anything you don’t need or haven’t used in the last decade! Then use the space to get rid of the clutter on the worktops. You will be amazed at the difference. 5. Blast Oven Spills: Burned-on spills welded to the bottom of your oven can give off odors and cause smoke. Take a metal spatula and gently chip off any loose pieces — with any luck, this alone might do the trick. If not, liberally spray with ammonia. Leave it for at least five minutes, sprinkle on baking soda completely covering the stain. Add just a few drops of white vinegar and allow it to bubble for a minute or two, wipe away the grime with a scrub sponge, finally wiping with a wet sponge. 6. Banish Bin Odors: Take plastic bins outside for a quick hosing down and then leave them upside down to dry. 7. Spruce Up Sponges: Mix bleach in a bowl of water, and soak your sponges for fifteen minutes. This will kill the germs that build up on them and leave them nice and fresh. 8. Check Your Corners: You may have already done a number on your kitchen. But now it's a perfect time to get into ALL OF THOSE CORNERS. Get the hoover or duster up around the coving and ceiling corners to remove cobwebs. 9. Toss The Toiletries: If your loofah or toothbrush needs replacing, get rid of the old one now and get a new brush – this should be done every three months. Also, check for out of date medicines and throw them. 10. Shake It: Take rugs and runners outside and give them a good shake. Like back in the old days, put it over the clothes line and beat it to really get the dirt and dust that has built up over winter, out.
