Telford Balloon & Kite Festival QE11 arena, Telford Town Park 12 & 13 May 2018 Come and see Telford's skies filled with spectacular flying objects over the weekend to celebrate Telford50. Lindstrand Technologies will be bringing a variety of hot air balloons that will be floating above your heads at intervals throughout the day as well as being tethered in the QE11 arena for you to see. The flights will be followed by a beautiful night glow where the balloons become wonderful floating lanterns bouncing to music on the Saturday evening. The Midlands Kite Flyers will be on the Rugby Club flying their huge kites. There will also be an opportunity for you to fly or make your own kites on the day. Planning is still underway for this event so keep your eyes peeled for more exciting things to be announced as well as timings for the day. This is a FREE event so just come along with your picnic 6

e Swan Inn e Swan; a village pub just outside Bridgnorth, which occupies a prime position along the River Severn, offering some of the most stunning views, fine food and a delightful pub atmosphere. Charmingly laid out and tastefully lit and the countryside-themed pictures and accessories adorning the walls help to blend cosy and classy together effortlessly. Since taking over the pub in 2013, Justin Welch, Liam McCombe and the team are going from strength to strength and have continuously worked to improve in all areas; the food, drink and accommodation, giving the option of a tranquil overnight stay. As a small independent operator it seems that the personal approach has served both them and their customers very well. We ordered some drinks; a diet Pepsi and medium Pinot Grigio and took a seat in one of the comfy booths overlooking the river. ere is an extensive menu of beautiful dishes, sourced fresh and locally, and prepared in-house to top quality standards - we were spoilt for choice. Our starters, Grilled Cheese with caramelised onions herbs garlic, sundried tomatoes & dipping bread and Crispy Shredded Duck salad with sweet chilli & mango jam and poppadum crumb, were respectively oozing with flavour and daringly tasty – the combination worked very well together.

Our mains of Hand Battered Cod fillet with mushy peas, homemade tartare sauce and hand cut chips and Roasted Chinese Five Spice Duck; breast with Pac choi hoi sin jus, wild mushrooms and duck fat roasted new potatoes – were both magically good. e batter is unquestionably the best we have sampled; light, crispy and free from grease – exceptional. My duck breast was impeccably cooked, the jus was rich in flavour and the wild mushrooms gave it an earthy goodness. As for dessert? e Chocolate Brownie with mint chocolate chip ice cream was excellent; served warm – Stef decided that it was the best to date, which is about as high as praise gets and the Lemon Posset with lemon curd, vanilla ice cream and shortbread was creamy and zesty, the shortbread bringing the whole thing together brilliantly.

e whole experience was great. Service was friendly giving you a home from home, relaxed experience and the food was spot-on. ere are lots of local beers, the wine list superb and very fairly-priced. Shropshire SANDS Help and support after the loss of a baby during pregnancy or soon after birth... Do you have a few hours a month to help a local baby bereavement Group? Shropshire SANDS are looking for people to volunteer to join their committee... “I found myself on the phone to a woman whose baby, like mine, had died. ‘Tell me about your baby’, she said and I poured my heart out to a perfect stranger with whom I felt an instant connection.” Mum. Losing your much longed for baby during pregnancy or soon after birth is the most awful trauma any parent can experience. A whole future is taken away from that family. Sadly this happens only too often. Currently 15 babies a day die in the weeks before or just after birth. Sands aims to care for those families with practical and emotional support for as long as they need it. Members of Shropshire Sands (Stillbirth and neonatal death charity) support group are appealing to the local community to help them find new volunteers to join their committee. Committee roles include Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary, Hospital Liaison and Fundraising Coordinator. Whilst many Sands volunteers have themselves experienced the death of the baby you do not have to have personal experience of baby loss in order to offer help to the committee. As long as you have an empathy and interest in Sands’ work we would urge you to get involved. Guidance, support and resources are provided to volunteers by UK-Sands and the local Network Coordinator. What’s on in
Wellington? e Midsummer Fayre takes place annually on the second Saturday in June, 10am – 3pm around Wellington’s Market Square, All Saints Church and Market Hall. Organised by Wellington H2A, it is funded with support from Wellington Market Company and Wellington Town Council – a great example of volunteer effort, the public purse and private sponsorship all working together to make something good happen. With around 40 stalls set up outside the parish church, this annual event is inspired by the ancient June fayres that were being held in Wellington as far back as the 13th century, and the town’s annual ‘Jubilee’ celebrations of the 1770s. Wellington Market has existed since at least 1244 when lord of the manor Giles d’Erdington was granted the right to hold a market once a week on ursdays. Today you’ll find its doors open on Tuesdays, ursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 8am and 4pm, with around 100 traders occupying the current Market Hall built in 1866. Here you’ll find all sorts of goods and produce from leeks

50 Golden Years 50 Golden Years – 1968 - 2018 When Saturday 30th June arrives this year, Shifnal Carnival will have been running for an unhindered 50 glorious years and Mr Gerald Nickless, now President of the Committee, has been part of this wonderful Shifnal family day for 50 years. Gerald said “As a child I had always enjoyed the Carnival and Old Club Day Street Fair. Eventually the Carnival lapsed and we just had the fair until a group of members of St Andrew’s Youth Club decided to revive Shifnal Carnival in 1968”. Shifnal Carnival Committee has since been organised and run by volunteers for the residents of Shifnal and surrounding areas since then. e Floats and walkers, adorned with many a paper flower lovingly made, and fancy dress, have brightened the last Saturday in June on a route throughout the Town’s from Admirals Estate through to now, Aston Street Car Park. emes for fancy dress have included an Hawaiian eme and the floats have been anything from Apollo

AUTOMATIC RENEWAL – e Biggest Con of All??...
aving money isn’t easy, even at the best of times. With the current financial climate looking a little bit unsettled and the rising cost of everyday items, it seems to be getting harder for many of us to make ends meet. It’s not just things like doing your shopping at Aldi instead of Tesco or not buying those big ticket items that can help you can save money. Looking at some of those things we pay for without really thinking about it – like gas and electricity, insurance or even bank charges can make a big difference to our pockets.

It is important to regularly look at your outgoings and expenditure. Lots of us use online banking and there are some clever Apps available that can help you easily breakdown where the majority of your money is going and this can be a useful first step in working out how to make some savings on everyday costs.
My husband and I recently delved into our finances, in particular our insurances were what we wanted to look into. Simple things like house, pet or car insurance can soon add up to a small fortune. We had decided to get some new quotes on our home insurance after receiving an automatic renewal from our current insurance company; Bradford & Bingley – which had almost tripled even though we had never made a claim. After
jumping onto Google and finding a comparison site (we used comparethemarket.com), we popped our details in and were shocked to find the lowest quote was actually our current insurer. The price on the site was near to the same as our previous year and nearly a third of our autorenewal price. We then called them up, and they were happy to offer the price we had found online. But it really just goes to show how these companies rely on people just allowing their policies to automatically renew without looking into them or getting alternative quotes. I suppose the fact is most of us are busy and really can’t be bothered but after looking at our other insurances we found a similar pattern across the board, our car insurance renewal was much cheaper and again our pet insurance was near enough tripled on the automatic renewal. We worked out that over the year we could save nearly £2000 by going online to compare prices across all of our policies and it only took us an hour or so – that pays for a holiday!

Ingredients PER GLASS Fresh or Glace Cherries (to garnish) 8 fl.oz. Ginger Beer 1 Shot of your favourite Vodka Juice of 1 squeezed Lime 2 tsp Cherry Juice (from a jar of cherries is fine) Fresh Lime Wedges (to garnish) Ice Cubes
Method An easy way to enjoy cherries, just combine the ingredients in a copper mug (or you can use a low ball glass if you don’t have a copper one). Mix well, and garnish with cherries on top and a lime wedge...
1) Preheat oven to 130C or 110C fan Assissted. Using a pencil, draw an 10cm circle on 6 pieces of baking paper. Spray your oven tray lightly with oil and place the paper on them, pencil side down. Beat the egg whites until it forms soft peaks. Add sugar gradually, beating well after each addition, until thick and glossy, then finally beat in the vanilla. 2) Spread the meringue onto the paper within the pencil lines. Bake for an hour, swapping from the top to bottom shelf halfway through. Turn off the oven, open door slightly and leave to cool completely. 3) Meanwhile, make your Cherry sauce, combine the sugar with 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Stir over low heat without boiling until the sugar has dissolved. Add the cherries and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook for about 78 minutes, or until the liquid has become syrupy. Strain into a jug and cool completely. 4) To serve, place one disc of meringue onto a serving plate. Spread with a generous layer of cream, and pile the whole cherries on top, drizzle with cherry sauce, and dust with icing sugar. Perfect.

Book Worms... A black country girl who loves to read. is book is the perfect, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy that I have been waiting for. I have only read this one book by Jo Watson, but I think she is becoming my new favourite author. It’s not often a book has me smiling, days after finishing reading it, but this one certainly does. Sera meets Ben in a nightclub, where she has gone undercover with her two adopted gay dads JJ and Bruce, so JJ can spy on his drag queen nemesis (I know, I can’t believe I’ve just wrote that sentence either). She ends up having the most amazing sex in the back of his car, something a good girl like her has never done before. inking that’s it, she goes to work the next day, where she discovers Ben, is in fact her new boss, and he is completely in love with her! Or so he keeps telling her. Sera is adamant that nothing can happen between the two of them, but the more time they spend together, the harder it is for Sera to stay away…or does she even want to? It’s very rare that a book has me laughing out loud, but from the very first page, but this one did exactly that. e witty dialogue between all of the characters is fantastic and kept me glued to the page, wanting more and more! e amount of sexual innuendos and suggestive comments throughout the book had me laughing and blushing but it wasn’t over the top and fit the flow of the story. Yes the story line was a little typical and I kind of guessed what was going to happen, but that didn’t stop me falling in love with this story. I became so invested that I read the book in one sitting. I absolutely adored Ben. Like, seriously, if it was even possible to fall in love with a fictional character, then he would definitely be my pick. He was tall, dark and

handsome, a romantic cliche, but he was also so much more. Yes he was a little arrogant, but he was also kind, thoughtful and funny and absolutely adored Sera. He certainly didn’t need any help winning me over. It’s so refreshing for a male romantic lead to know exactly what he wants and who isn’t afraid to talk about his feelings. e chemistry between the two of them was off the charts and kept me entertained right until the very end. Both character’s were so likeable and you were rooting for both of them. Sera was so strong, passionate and selfless. She was also witty and hilarious and I loved the dialogue between her and Ben. I’m thinking the stars of the show however, are JJ and Bruce. ey were simply fantastic. ey supported Sera through all her troubles and were always there to offer a helping hand, and advice. ey took Sera in and treated her like their own daughter and there relationship is beautiful to see. I am so impressed with Jo Watson’s style of writing. She was able to adapt from being carefree and hilarious to serious and romantic and leaves readers, like myself, wanting more and more. She has a way of making you also feel embarrassed as well, as if everything that was happening to Sera was happening to me. ere were times were I wanted the ground to swallow me up whole because I could just imagine everything that happened to Sera was happening to me. This book is the perfect choice for fans of romantic comedies and my only wish is that I didn’t read it so quickly. I rate this book five out of five stars, and now I am going to go on Amazon and buy all her other books so I have something to keep me going on this cold and wet day.

SWIMMING OUTSIDE
Sewage Contamination...
Swimming in the seas or streams and lakes can be fun in summertime. To avoid tummy bugs from sewage make sure you pick a Blue Flag beach (check the Good Beach Guide) to minimise the risks of swimming in polluted water. Swimming in sewage-contaminated sea water can cause diarrhoea and vomiting, as well as infections of the ear, nose and throat.

ites and stings...
The Great British summer means deck chairs, ice-cream vans and picnics, but it also means Bees, Ants and Midges and inevitably bites and stings too.
How do you avoid these creatures feasting on you? Here’s the lowdown on a few. The humble Wasp sends people diving for cover, arms flapping in panic- it’s understandable as they can give a nasty sting which can cause swelling and itching. Some people are allergic to Wasp or Bee stings but it is unusual - See a doctor straight away if you have a severe reaction. The best way to avoid getting stung is to NOT swat them as this just makes them angry. Calmly move away instead. Avoid bright coloured clothes as these attract them and look out for nests around your garden or home. If you find one you should call your local council or a pest control expert to remove it for you.
Bee stings are painful but thankfully Bees are not aggressive like Wasps and will not
sting unless provoked. Bumble Bees can sting as many times as they wish, as they do not have a barbed sting. When Honey Bees sting they leave their barbed sting inside you and then they die. You will need to remove the stinger to prevent infection setting in. To avoid getting stung by a Bee stay calm and avoid provoking them, they are not interested in your food and drink and normally only sting in self-defence.
Ticks are common in the UK, especially in woods, moors and thick grass. Once they latch on, they cling to your skin and suck your blood. The bite isn’t painful so you can sometime get bitten without even knowing it. Ticks can transmit Lyme Disease so keep an eye out for a circular rash spreading from out from the bite site or any other symptoms of Lyme Disease and visit your doctor if this occurs. To prevent Tick bites wear long sleeves and trousers when out walking in woods or long grass and use Tick repellent. If you find a tick remove it straight away.
Other pests that bite and sting include Mosquitos, Flower Bugs, Midges, Bedbugs, Horseflies, Ants, Spiders and Caterpillars. To find out more about avoiding and treating bites and stings visit www.nhs.uk, where you will fing lots of useful tips.
If you are not used to swimming outdoors wear a wetsuit. Don’t jump into cold water it’s better to wade in slowly. Stay close to the shore and make sure you have something warm to put on once you get out. If you are shivering or your teeth start chattering you could develop hypothermia if you don’t get out of the water and warm up.
BLUE-GREEN ALGAE... Stomach Upsets and Sore Eyes.
Blue-green algae can appear on lakes and ponds over summer, forming a powdery green scum. Avoid swimming in lakes that have areas of blue-green algae. Swimming in it can trigger skin rashes, stomach upsets and sore eyes.
JELLYFISH STINGS..
Jellyfish are common on UK beaches.
UK jellyfish stings aren't dangerous, but they can lead to an intense, stinging pain, sometimes with itching and a rash. Avoid swimming in waters crowded with jellyfish, and never touch a jellyfish. If you get stung remove any tentacles using tweezers or a clean stick, apply an ice pack to the affected area to help reduce pain and inflammation.

I venture to say that the SUV is here to stay and unless your idea of comfortable voyaging is a seat on a balsa log in the Kon Tiki, you will need no convincing that the Kuga is the regal ruler of merry motoring. At the wheel I felt like an explorer - firmly seated and yet surrounded by sufficient space for stout Cortez and his twenty men. Here is a car designed for multipurpose use that never fails to delight. For extroverts it's a sporty option; for sensible sirs and senoritas who may be inclined towards introverted temperaments, the Kuga offers comfort on a featherbed scale. If the SUV concept represents the universal car, you don't need to be a university graduate to recognise the genuine article when you see it. The Kuga represents the culmination of clever thinking on the SUV scene. It's hard to believe they can go one step better- but knowing Ford, they will.
