Darwin’s Kitchen. by Kerrie Vaughan
On a particularly cold winters evening, in the heart of Shrewsbury, the streets were alight with the beauty of Christmas, late night shoppers were filling the streets in abundance. Lian and I decided where better to go than to e Jazz Club at Darwin’s Kitchen, which is every Wednesday from 6PM for some good music, warmth and of course some delicious food. Darwin’s Kitchen is the newest addition to Shrewsbury based company - e DiTella Group, also comprising of e Loopy Shrew and Darwin’s Townhouse. Walking towards Darwin’s Kitchen we could hear the seductive sound of the saxophone playing and the smell of tempting food filled the air. We went in, it was bustling with people enjoying the Jazz, dining and chatting with friends. We were greeted by Dan who showed us to our table in this fine dining establishment which is adorned with fantastic décor. We gazed over the delightful menu, and were served a large glass of white house wine and a Darwin’s Ale, which were very well-deserved after a busy day.
“
e menu caters for all, with a “Whilst you wait menu”, “Small plates”, “From the vegetable patch”, “From the sea”, “From the farm”, “From the Grill,” “Chefs big plates”, “Shropshire steaks and “Sides” & a delightful Sandwich menu. What a fantastic choice of mouth-watering food to choose from. We were absolutely spoilt for choice.

10 Eating Out
We decided on a variety of dishes off the light plates menu to share. On average around four to six dishes are substantial for two people and as we were very hungry we chose six. We opted for; • Melting Camembert, Carrot & Apricot, Sourdough Croutes, Carrot & Celery Crudities. • Cajun Spiced Prawns, Lime Crème Fraiche, Mango Salsa. • Sticky Lamb Bits with Orange and Garlic, Heritage Carrots, with Crumbled Feta and Black Olives. • Coq Au Vin, Chicken in Red Wine with Bacon and Mushrooms. • Teriyaki Seared Beef Rump, Spring Onion, Ginger and Soy Dressing. • Chicken & Yoghurt Kebabs, Crispy Garlic & Ginger Salsa. • Truffle & Parmesan Fries, as a little side.

Gazing around this historical building, there were people chatting, laughing, dancing and thoroughly enjoying their time at Darwin’s Kitchen, whether they we there just for drinks, light bites or dining out in style. With 60 tables Darwin’s kitchen has ample space to cater for your needs. Whilst we waited for the food to arrive, we were served by Oliver with some fresh white and Granary bread with a selection of oil, balsamic and butter - What a delight! Out came the food, with an extremely attentive Oliver, who was a delight throughout the whole evening. We were in foodie heaven; every dish that we sampled complimented one-another perfectly. My favourite the Teriyaki Seared Beef Rump, the beef was so succulent and the flavours were amazing we enjoyed every morsel. e prawns were fresh juicy and flavoursome. e idea of sharing the small plates was a great one. e sticky lamb was cooked to perfection and mixed with the feta Olive and carrots, it was a true delight. Lian’s favourite e Coq Au Vin - the sauce was decadent, exquisite and extremely warming; comfort food at its very best.
Melting Camembert, Carrot & Apricot, Sourdough Croutes, Carrot & Celery Crudities, simply divine. e Truffle & Parmesan Fries, as a little side were amazingly crispy and delicious and the Chicken & Yoghurt Kebabs were a succulent taste sensation. Overall a fantastic evening and top marks to Darwin’s Kitchen and all the staff for a truly amazing experience; the Jazz night is highly recommended and the food just outstanding. Darwin's Kitchen has created a warm and inviting environment, perfect for any occasion, no matter what the time of day. Cosy up on the sofas with your morning coffee and paper and watch the world go by, catch up with friends in their tropical, leafy conservatory, treat your nearest and dearest to dinner in e Dining Room, a firm nod to Charles Darwin's roots and style. Darwin's Kitchen also boasts four boutique bedrooms, including one luxurious suite and 3 superior doubles. Perfect for a midweek treat or weekend getaway.

e Riverbank Shrewsbury by Luke Smith
e Riverbank Shrewsbury boasts a unique combination of hearty Mediterranean cuisine and wholesome British classics. Offering a choice of innovative dishes with comfortable favourites. e cocktail lounge provides an extensive selection of ingenious, perfectly prepared cocktails, from prohibition classics to new infusions and flavours shaken, merged, muddled and stirred - just for you. I decided to take my wife Ashleigh out for the evening and had often heard good things about this particular restaurant, in the heart of Shrewsbury town and close to beautiful Shrewsbury quarry, and with lots of parking available this is in the ideal location. As we arrived we were warmly welcomed by our waiter and shown to our table. e restaurant itself is very impressive; very well designed and decorated to the very highest quality but offering that relaxed atmosphere at all times.

12 Eating Out
We decided to delve into the extensive drinks menu with so many choices, including popular gins and cocktails to the classic wines and beers. We decided to go for the soft drink option of a diet coke as we both had work the next day. We browsed through the menus with two on offer either the main A La Carte menu or the set menu. With impressive choices on both menus we decided to choose something off the A La Carte, to start Ashleigh chose the Crispy Salt and Pepper Calamari; deep fried calamari with lemon served with aioli and I went for the Garlic Mushroom Bruschetta; toasted ciabatta, creamy sauce, rocket and parmesan. While we waited for our starters we were treated to some warm bread with marinated olives and balsamic vinegar, which was a very nice touch. Our starters arrived very promptly and they didn’t disappoint at all. Ashleigh’s calamari was cooked to perfection. Crisp, succulent rings of calamari cooked to tender perfection and just the right amount of ‘melt in your mouth’ in every bite. My starter was equally impressive the mushrooms were indulgently good and combined with the ciabatta, creamy sauce and just the right amount of parmesan, made it two out of two for tremendous starters. For our main course I decided to choose the Crispy Belly Pork; Shropshire blue mash,

kale, black pudding, crispy pancetta, celeriac and apple puree and jus. For Ashleigh - Chicken, Mushroom and Garlic Pasta; creamy garlic sauce, rocket and parmesan. e Belly Pork was nothing short on sensational and without doubt the best I have ever had, the meat almost dissolved in your mouth yet the crackling was brilliantly crunchy. e flavours were immense and accompanied by the Shropshire blue mash, black pudding and apple puree, made this a spectacular dish. Ashleigh was also was a huge fan of her main course too. e dish was cooked impeccably and the combination of ingredients made for a very successful dish. We decided to try the Italian style chips as well, which are triple cooked in truffle oil and sprinkled with parmesan; once again incredible. Onto the grand finale, and although we were pretty full we managed to make some room for pudding. I fancied the Riverbank Special; a trio of homemade Tiramisu with Tia Maria and mascarpone, Double Chocolate Brownie, Crumble Amaretto with toffee ice cream and Ashleigh went for the Madagascar Vanilla and Raspberry Crème Brulee – also known as crema catalane or burnt cream; a rich custard base with a layer of hard caramel, served with amaretto biscotti. Ashleigh really enjoyed this dessert which was nice and light, not too heavy. e addition of the raspberry made this really tasty; a great finish to a terrific meal. My dessert trio was as described in the menu –special! is could easily be shared between two; with a huge piece of homemade tiramisu and a double chocolate brownie. Delicate and not overpowering, every bite was a delight. Overall we had a truly fantastic experience at e Riverbank Shrewsbury. If you want, you can just pop in for a cocktail (or two, or three…) or to enjoy some live music, which they have every week, but I would recommend for you to enjoy some of their amazing food. Why not book a romantic Valentine’s meal, or to enjoy a meal with family and friends – whatever the occasion this is the place to go.

Vegan Eating Out Gripes_Double Page Editorial 10/12/2018 14:27 Page 1
Dining out as a vegan...
ghastly gripes •
•
The vegan movement is steadily growing and savvy restaurants have woken up to the fact that they need to offer vegan options. There are currently around 22 million flexitarians in the UK and the chances are in a group booking there may well be one vegan. If catering for them is a hassle for the chef, they may well decide to take their party somewhere else.
•
Restaurants are getting better all the time at offering vegan menu items, but the same common problems still occur over and over again.
Here are some ways those problems can be prevented:
•
•
•
Offering vegan menu items that are similar to non-vegan items can result in confusion amongst staff. Recently I ordered a vegan margarita pizza which came with cheese. The problem was there was a vegan and non-vegan margarita on the menu and they looked the same. The vegan dish needs to look and sound completely different and serving it on different plates goes a long way to cutting down on genuine mistakes by the staff.
While genuine mistakes do happen, what’s completely unacceptable is that some people in hospitality still think it’s funny to sneak non-vegan ingredients into meals served to vegans. Butter in vegetables where they think you won’t notice is common. I always ask for butter to be replaced with oil and that’s why eating out in Italian restaurants is a winner for vegans because for every dish where the British cook will reach for the butter, an Italian will always naturally gravitate towards olive oil. Coffees can be a minefield. I’ve lost count of the number of times I have taken a sip of my soya latte only to discover it was made with milk. Yes, people can make mistakes and the server can easily just take the wrong drink. But, again, having different cups for soya milk drinks and milk would hugely minimise the chances of the wrong drinks arriving.
I worry about having vegan food prepared in non-vegan kitchens. Food hygiene rules should prevent cross contamination, but we have to accept it happens. Hands go from meat and dairy to handling vegetables. The staff doing it often don’t even give it a second thought as they are mainly focused on the end result, i.e. a meal served without meat or dairy. Restaurants need to have a clear policy that vegan meals are prepared at a separate station so there’s no opportunity for cross-contamination.
A big no is frying vegan food in fryers that also fry meat and fish products. If restaurants are doing this the customer needs to know so they can make an informed decision. This needs to be clearly identified on the menu.
Market trends are likely to force restaurants to up their game in meeting the needs of people who abstain from eating animal products, in coming years, as more people show an inclination to drop meat from their diet for health or ethical reasons.

Fussy Kids Keep Parents In...
A Recipe Rut New research reveals almost half (46%) of parents are limited to just six or fewer dishes that they can cook from scratch, because they are worried picky eater children won’t finish their food. The report, commissioned by Young’s Seafood, found that this figure rises to two thirds – 65 per cent – of parents with no more than eight recipes in their repertoire. Almost a quarter (23%) of parents rely on the same, simple four or fewer meals when feeding their offspring. And even then, they often stick to staples like scrambled eggs, cheese on toast and sandwiches. Fear of fussy children not eating was cited by a third of parents as the reason they dare not experiment in the kitchen, ahead of the cost of lots of new ingredients (31%) and time it takes to prepare a new dish (26%). The poll of 1,500 parents with children aged four to 15, found that their fear is far from misplaced. Six in ten (57%) children regularly leave food on their plates. And a third even fail to clear their plate when their favourite meal has been cooked for them. Nearly two thirds of parents feel their children are nervous of new tastes and textures. Whilst almost half think they are put off by the look of new food and 30 per cent by the smell. Three in ten say their children simply choose not to try anything new.
To help parents get their children cleaning their dinner plates, Young’s Seafood has formed a panel of mini chefs and food critics – The Youngsters – to create Chip Shop meals by kids, for kids, making happy meal times and guaranteeing clean plates all round. Every recipe has been designed to be quick and easy for families to make, using common store cupboard ingredients found in everyone’s kitchen. The panel of six includes the children of the founders of leading parenting advice websites, Toby and Roo and Actually Mummy. The petite panel has worked with nutritionist Dr. Sarah Schenker, who specialises in cooking for
young children and tackling fussy eaters, to develop the range of recipes. Reuben Shearsmith, The Youngsters' food critic (aged 7), commented: “I loved making food with Young’s, I think other children will really like eating the food as much as me!” “I learnt a lot about vitamins! Vitamin A is in orange food like the sweet potato chips in my favourite recipe which was the Young’s Cod with vegetable chips but I didn’t like the parsnip chips so I’ll have extra carrot and sweet potato chips!” From Becky’s Tasty Chip Shop Tacos to Toby’s Chip Shop Fish Fingers with Stuffed Peppers, The Youngsters' range of Young’s Chip Shop recipes boasts something for everyone. Dr. Sarah Schenker commented: “What’s great about these recipes is that not only have they been created and tested by children but that they contain plenty of the important nutrients that children need to grow, develop and stay healthy. “The Young’s recipes have all been rigorously tested by The Youngsters panel and come highly recommended from the fussiest of taste buds!”
The data has revealed that nearly half of parents cook no more than five times a week for their family. Their other most popular culinary efforts include spaghetti bolognese, roasts, bangers and mash, pizza, curry, pasta bake and burgers. Dr Schenker continued: “We were surprised to see that Fish & Chips is not in the nation’s top 10 recipes at home, despite it being such a simple way to get Omega 3 - an essential source of fatty acid found in fish - into children’s diets. The Youngsters Chip Shop recipes are packed full of vitamins that boost immunity, benefit bone health and keep eyes healthy.” When parents do not cook, children are most commonly given takeaways. Parents admit they resort to fast food because it gives them a break from cooking and they know their kids will eat it. Other options include local restaurants, grandparents or friends coming to the rescue or kids cooking themselves. Despite all this, 58 per cent of parents admit they worry about their children’s diets, chiefly about a lack of nutrients or variety. Just four per cent of children help out with the cooking at home on most days of the week. Almost half join in somewhere between once a week and once a month. And one in five children never help out at all. The low levels of child involvement in cooking are despite parents believing it would help them grow up; they would find it fun and help them feel proud. Serge Nollent, Head Chef at Young’s Seafood, commented: “We know families love our Chip Shop range, often with chips and peas. But now our Youngsters panel have created some great new ways to eat the classic dish, helping parents feed their children with inspiring new meals. “Every single Chip Shop recipe from The Youngsters panel has been given the seal of approval by child nutritionist Dr Sarah Schenker, so not only are these meals loved by children across the country, they are good for them too.”

Don’t feel down this Blue Monday...
Gd Md Fds So Christmas is over and Blue Monday approaches… but don’t feel down! We’ve got you covered with these 6 good mood foods to help you through the dark January days, and keep you feeling good all year long. Who can deny the power of food when it comes to our mood? The best part is that some foods are actually proven to lift our moods, and leave us feeling happier and healthier. We've rounded up our favourite 6, just in time to get you through Blue Monday (and the rest of the year, of course!).
1. OATS
Oats are an effective mood booster because they slowly release energy into the bloodstream, which keeps blood sugar and mood stable (as opposed to providing a ‘sugar high’ that will quickly crash, leaving you feeling more irritable) [1]. Nutritionist Cassandra Barns recommends starting the day with a big bowl of porridge: “porridge oats provide slowreleasing carbohydrates to help replenish your muscle glycogen (the energy stored in your muscles) and are a good source of magnesium, which may support relaxation. Stir in chopped nuts, raspberries or sliced strawberries, and cinnamon.” Now there’s a breakfast to get out of bed for! “And as a healthy ‘staple’ to regulate blood sugar and mood throughout the day, try snacking on Nairn’s Rough Oatcakes (£1, Sainsbury’s), delicious on their own or with a range of toppings”.
2. NUTS AND SEEDS
Nuts and seeds are all great sources of fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants, to keep your
immune system protected against all those winter bugs. Brazil nuts are rich in the mood-boosting mineral selenium, low levels of which have been linked to depression, irritability and anxiety. [2] Amazingly, all you need are 3 Brazil nuts a day for your RDA of selenium! Studies show that eating a handful of nuts a day can also lower your risk for cancer, heart disease, and respiratory problems[3] – so get snacking! Nuts make a great addition to porridge, salads and stir-fries.
3. TOFU
Soy products like tofu are rich sources of tryptophan, the essential amino acid responsible for synthesizing serotonin. Consuming a high-tryptophan diet has been shown to raise levels of this ‘happy hormone’ and improve mood, anxiety and depression.[4] Give your serotonin – and your taste buds - a boost with itsu’s ‘losing your vegan’ity’ limited edition Bento Box (available throughout January, £4.99, itsu stores nationwide). Tryptophanrich - with Beechwood smoked organic tofu steak - it’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face at lunchtime!
4. LEAFY GREENS
Dark leafy greens are a great way to up your B vitamin intake. Deficiencies in certain B vitamins have been linked to depression, as it’s thought that low B vitamin levels can hinder serotonin production[5]. Vitamins B3, B6 and B12 are all important ones to look out for. Leafy greens like spinach are also rich in folic acid, which helps keep serotonin levels stable to alleviate anxiety and improve mood. Add cooked spinach or kale to curries, stir-fries and soups for a warming winter mood-booster.
5. SALMON
People who are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids may be more susceptible to depression and low mood, as these fatty acids make up a large percentage of our brain tissue[6]. Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, and regular consumption will help keep your brain healthy, improve neurotransmitter performance, and balance dopamine and serotonin levels. Ward off Seasonal Affective Disorder this January and go for at least one serving of salmon – or another oily fish – a week.
6. CHOCOLATE
The news everyone likes to hear…chocolate is good for you! A small square of dark chocolate causes the brain to release endorphins and boost serotonin levels, reducing levels of anxiety and stress hormones. What’s more, dark chocolate can also help our immunity! Raw cacao – the main raw ingredient used to make chocolate ¬– is high in plant compounds called flavanols[7]. These stimulate our body’s antioxidant defences, helping to protect against those pesky winter colds. To reap the benefits, go dark – nutritionist Cassandra Barns recommends at least 70% cacao – and choose raw chocolate, like Ombar 72% Raw Cacao (£1.99, Ocado or www.ombar.co.uk), who keep their processing at low temperatures so the cacao stays choc-full of nutrients and flavour.

Ellesmere... With a small heronry on the island, visible from the visitor centre, the mere is worth a visit at any time of year. In the winter it is particularly good for gulls with a large roost often containing some of the rarer species, and usually has a range of wintering ducks including Goosander, Smew. Wintering Cormorants have a roost here but keep an eye open for the occasional diver.
Winter Bird-watching... providing a backdrop – and also the perfect nesting opportunity for hundreds of pairs of sand martins. Landfill and quarrying activities take place adjacent to the reserve.
Wood Lane Nature Reserve- A disused industrial site, now a haven for birds...
More than 180 species of birds have been recorded at Wood Lane since the nature reserve was established in 1999. Pumps control the water levels, so that optimum amounts of mud and water are available for wading birds such as greenshank and curlew; islands have been created for safe roosting; hundreds of trees have been planted and scores of nest boxes installed. The reserve is a rare and much valued haven for breeding lapwing, tree sparrow and yellow hammer, while little ringed plover is another speciality. The sand mountain provides an ideal nesting site for sand martin, of which 500 pairs have been known. Waders, such as greenshank, godwit and whimbrel, drop in to feed up on their migration journeys in spring and autumn. There are around 40 breeding bird species on the reserve. There are two large hides facing the lagoons and school groups regularly visit.
Several large lagoons with islands and surrounding wetland make up the reserve, which is surrounded here by a working landscape with mountainous heaps of sand
From the A528, just south of Ellesmere, take the Colemere road at the Spunhill crossroads. The car park is ¾ mile down on the right. For access to the hides or further information on planning a school visit, contact Shropshire Wildlife Trust on 01743 284280 or you can send an email to : enquiries@shropshirewildlifetrust.org.uk
Ellesmere is well-known for its collection of glacial lakes, but just a short distance away lies a man-made lake which in just a few years has become one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire. In five years, Wood Lane has become a haven for long-legged water birds, with spring and autumn visitors including greenshank, redshank, whimbrel, dunlin, green sandpiper and little stint. These use the site as somewhere to rest during migration, while the variety of ducks to be seen are visitors all year round.
One of the best bird-watching sites in Shropshire, Wood Lane Nature Reserve has been developed in recent years on worked-out industrial land, Tudor Griffiths Group’s old sand and gravel workings near Ellesmere.

No Recipes Required! e Food & Fitness Diary:
Breakthrough Food Diary Launched by Formerly-Homeless, 7-Stone-Lighter Personal Trainer
My name is Tania and I'm a certified personal Trainer. I came into this career path through a personal journey of my own having lost a total of 7 stone.
To start with I tried different diets and various exercise routines - I lost some weight, but I wasn’t finding the experience pleasant! I constantly felt tired, hungry, irritable and to be honest generally quite miserable! After a few more weeks of feeling this way - I quit! Instead I simply said to myself, “Instead of trying to lose weight I will just try not to put more on” I went back to my original eating habits but instead of 3 Pizza’s and two litres of pop in a binge, I had to 2 pizza’s and 1 litre of pop. And I started to walk a little more instead of driving around all the time.
TIME TO CHECK I WASN'T GAINING WEIGHT ANYMORE!
When I finally plucked up the courage to stand on the scales in hope I hadn’t gained more weight - I got quite a shock! I had actually lost half a stone… How was this possible? I was eating Pizza's, Burgers and ready meals galore! OK… Not as much as I used to, but still it was a pretty poor diet. I needed to know why I was losing weight. Why was I finding it easy to lose weight now, basically without trying, than when I first started on a dieting plan? The Penny dropped - It wasn’t what I was eating, it was simply the quantity. It was simple maths, there are less Calories in 2 Pizza’s than there are in 3… Sounds obvious to me now, but in the beginning , when you have no knowledge of Calories in vs Calories out, you simply think dieting is about eating certain foods! I wanted to know why I was losing weight without all the original feelings of feeling hungry and miserable. What was I doing right? I researched or should I say “Googled” more and more information about weight loss, activity and fitness and came across BMI Calculators, which simply told me I was still FAT… Not very inspirational and quite depressing! I started to look up things like Metabolic Rate and Metabolism. It sounds boring but the knowledge put me on a path to losing even more and more weight. While researching Metabolic rate I came across
Health & Fitness
another Weight Loss Calculator - The BMR Calculator - Basel Metabolic Rate. Basically it tells you how many Calories you need per day to Run / Fuel your Body - Based on your current weight and activity. So in a nutshell If you consume the same amount of Calories as your body burns off in any single day You stay the same weight!
•MORE CALORIES AND YOU GAIN WEIGHT! •LESS CALORIES AND YOU LOSE WEIGHT!
OK… You already know this and it may be common sense - So why is it so hard to lose weight? I learnt - And this is the magic part! If you reduce this BMR figure by 300 to 500 Calories, you don’t notice the Calorie Reduction - Therefore you don’t feel hungry or miserable. And this is what I was feeling… I had found this “Happy Zone” by chance. I was reducing my Calorie intake by just the right amount to make me feel happy and content all day long.
If you don’t know how many Calories your body needs per day - You can’t reduce your Calorie intake by just the right amount for your body to feel happy about it…. This is why Diets fail…! I wanted to keep my body in the “Happy Zone” so I needed to work out a way to “Keep on top” of my Calorie Calculations easily. I wasn’t on a short term diet, I wanted to lifestyle change! I knew exactly how many Calories I needed to feel “Happy and Content” but I didn’t want to spend all my time looking up the Calorie Content of everything I was eating, so I created my own Food Diary / Organiser. It was a work in progress and I had to make quite a few changes before I got it just right. Now I know the Calorie content of everything that passes my lips… I knew my Daily Calorie Goal and I knew the Calorie Content of the foods I enjoy…. As long as I didn’t go over my Calorie Goal - I lost
weight that day! Everything became so simple because I just got more organised with my Calories! The more Food Calorie Values I wrote down the easier my calculations became! Soon my Food Diary consisted of a Calorie Library, Set Menus and a Daily Food Recorder, ensuring I never went over my Daily Calorie Goal.
The more weight I lost the more active I became, and very soon my activities turned into daily exercises. It was a wonderful catch 22. In total I lost 7 Stone and felt empowered with my achievement - I did it using knowledge and some basic maths to ensure my body felt happy all the time! I wanted to share my experience and help others, so I decided to become a Personal Trainer. A year later, with the knowledge I had learnt, I was helping people start their weight loss journeys. I explain the principal of my Food Diary to clients and many of them have said to me “You should turn this into a book” So I have! ‘No Recipes Required!- The Food & Fitness Diary’ is available now. Oswestry Youth Music Festival... Oswestry Youth Music Festival continues to grow every year and we are delighted that the new syllabus is bigger than ever, with newly established classes and trophies, and some introductory exhibition classes.
The dates for 2019 are Wednesday 27th February to Sunday 3rd March with 80 established classes. There will also be three introductory exhibition classes – Counter Tenor, French Chanson and Young Folk Artist. If these new classes are successful in 2019, they will become fully embedded in the Festival for 2020. Entry fees remain fixed at £6 per solo class (£12 for ensembles) and admission to all performances is free.
Our adjudicators will be John Powell, Nadia Hinson and Christine Thompson, with the Finals Concert on Sunday being adjudicated by Andrew Padmore.
The Festival continues to draw in approximately 1000 young people to Oswestry over the course of the 5 days. Many are local, but performers also come from Wrexham, Chester, Welshpool, Shrewsbury and Telford to name but a few places. We like to think of our festival as providing an opportunity to perform in front of an audience in a friendly, welcoming environment. Although it is a competition, it is more about developing confidence in
26
2019 performing, and listening to constructive feedback from our adjudicators.
The closing date for 2019 entries is Friday 18th January and entries should arrive at the Guildhall in Oswestry no later than 1pm on that day. The timetable is created that evening and the programme is prepared over the weekend, so it is essential that entries are received in good time as we are unable to accept late entries. Entries should be delivered to The Guildhall, Oswestry, Shropshire SY11 1PZ. There is also an annual competition to design the logo for the festival and entry forms for this can be obtained from the Guildhall. The winning design features on the programmes and on the stickers, and entries should be submitted as above.
The syllabus and entry forms can be downloaded from the town council’s website at www.oswestry-tc.gov.uk. You can also follow us on Facebook at Oswestry Youth Music Festival, where regular updates are posted.
We are always looking to recruit new volunteers for stewarding, clerking and announcing. Please contact the Guildhall on 01691 680222 for more information, or email Sue Turner, the Festival Organiser, at susanhturner@hotmail.co.uk.

Pet Beds Edit_Double Page Editorial 09/11/2018 13:58 Page 1
How to Choose e Right Pet For You...
Pet Edit especially as they get older or if they develop health problems.
Last but by all means not least is your knowledge about the pet that you are considering. We're a nation of animal lovers, but the reality of owning a pet can be different from what we expect. Researching as much as you can about the species and breed of pet you want is really important, and real-life experiences of people who already own that pet and advice from a vet are essential. Make sure you know about The Animal Welfare Acts* and the five welfare needs that each pet needs to be healthy and happy.
Getting a pet is a very exciting time, but providing everything for a new animal can end up being overwhelming. PDSA can help you choose the right pet for you, and understand the needs of the pet you're thinking about getting. Think P-E-T-S – Place, Exercise, Time and Spend... By visiting the PDSA website you can get PetWise! They have a useful tool, which runs through a series of questions, helping you to decide on which- if any - pet would be best suited to you based on your circumstances.
There are a number of things considered such as what size your garden is. All pets need space to run and play, but dogs in particular need regular access to a safe and secure outdoor space. Many cats also enjoy being able to exercise outside and rabbits and guinea pigs need access to a large run or a garden to be happy and healthy.
Next is your activity level. Dogs enjoy regular walks, and playing off the lead whenever it's safe for them to do so. The amount of exercise a dog will need depends on their age, breed and health. All pets enjoy fun games and playing with toys to keep them active, but for smaller pets you can easily do this in your house.
Pet Feature
As well as your activity level, you need to consider how much time you have available to spend with your pet. Pets are generally sociable and dogs especially love your company. It's really important that
they aren't left alone for longer than four hours, as dogs can become lonely, anxious and distressed. Walks, training, play time, feeding, cleaning their home and equipment (or cleaning up after your pet!) grooming and visits to the vet can start to add up and might take more time than you think.
Another important thing to consider is how much a pet may cost and if you have enough money to spend on the needs of your new pet. It's not just the initial cost of getting a pet which you need to consider. Food, equipment, toys, flea and worm treatments, pet insurance premiums, replacing a chewed-up bed or unexpected vets bills – it all adds up significantly over the lifetime of your pet,
*The Animal Welfare Acts mean that all pet owners have a duty of care to meet the welfare needs of their pets and ensure their pets are both physically and mentally healthy and happy. The five welfare needs are; • Environment – give them a safe, suitable place to live • Diet – feed them the right type and amount of food • Behaviour – allow them to show normal behaviour patterns • Companionship – some pets like to live alone whilst others need the company of other pets • Health – keep your pets in good health and seek vet advice if they’re ill or injured.
Discover the right pet for you and your family at www.pdsa.org.uk/taking-careof-your-pet/choosing-a-pet.

Kim-Joy Gets Her Bake On For Samaritans' Brew Monday 2018 Great British Bake-Off runner up, Kim Joy Hewlett, is donning her lucky apron and baking some of her creative treats in support of Samaritans' Brew Monday on 21 January 2019. Fresh from storming to baking success with her spectacular animals inspired bakes, Kim-Joy is encouraging people to stamp the date in the diary for a get-together with friends, family, workmates or neighbours for a brew, to raise vital funds for Samaritans. Often dubbed 'the most difficult day of the year', Samaritans is turning the third Monday in January (aka 'Blue Monday') on its head, helping banish the January blues by rallying people everywhere to reach out to someone who may be feeling lonely and have a chat over a brew and a biccie. Kim-Joy, who is a qualified psychological wellbeing practitioner and has suffered with social anxiety, thinks the little things can make all the difference. She said: “Setting aside time for a cup of tea might sound simple, but it is an act that helps offset other pressures. It means you get time for yourself and those close to you. It’s so easy for pressures to build up, which can lead to and perpetuate mental health issues. “A cup of tea (or your brew of choice), can bring us back to basics and help break down barriers. Whether you spend the time opening up, listening to others, or just reflecting and having some quiet time. It is a collection of lots of smaller gestures that hopefully will get us thinking or talking more about our Kim-Joy Hewlett sips a brew in support of Brew Monday
mental health. I’ll be spending Brew Monday having a cup of tea, baking and eating biscuits whilst hanging out with my lovely partner Nabil.” All over the country in communities and workplaces, people will be joining Brew Monday events in the lead-up to and on Monday 21 January 2019, raising vital funds to support Samaritans’ life-saving work. Anyone can join in the Brew Monday celebrations and organise a community event to raise funds so Samaritans can be there for anyone going through a difficult time who needs someone to talk to, in complete confidence. Beth Simons, Samaritans' Community Fundraising Manager, said: “We want to banish those so-called January blues and Brew Monday is a great opportunity to reach out to someone that’s struggling, whilst raising money to keep our services running around the clock. It doesn’t have to be tea (or a Monday!) – juice, coffee or fizz on any day will do the trick. Sign up for your Brew Monday pack and we’ll send you everything you need to make your tea party a triumph!” To support Samaritans on Brew Monday, register for a free fundraising pack at: https://www.samaritans.org/mediacentre/our-campaigns/brew-monday/brew-monday-2019-regi stration. e pack includes everything you need to host a Brew Monday event, including Samaritans tea bags, cake flags, posters and a collection box. You can follow @samaritans on Twitter, @samaritanscharity on Instagram or find us on Facebook www.facebook.com/samaritanscharity. Share your moment on social media using the hashtag #BrewMonday.

Why Opt For A Winter Weing WHY CHOOSE A WINTER WEDDING? Winter can be a magical time to get married...
While lots of couples choose to get married during the main summer wedding season, generally between May and September, choosing a winter wedding can be a really special time of year to tie the knot.
HIRE AN ICE RINK! For an extra special winter touch.
Synthetic Ice Rinks are extremely popular now. They come in a variety of sizes and can generally be laid anywhere that has a flat surface, like a car park or courtyard, but they can be laid on grass as you can lay boards underneath to make it flatter. Generally hire includes skates and skate aids meaning everyone can join in the fun without having to bring their own skates, plus how cool would it be to have the first dance ‘on ice’!
Whatever the Weather...
Sure it’s nice to have warm sun, lush green grass and trees in full bloom, but winter is now becoming very popular with couples planning to get wed. If you are lucky, you may get a sprinkling of snow on your wedding day, which can make for some of the most amazing photographs, plus snow on your wedding day is considered a sign of prosperity and fertility.
Twinkling Lights and Open Fires...
You Might Get a Better Deal...
Summer weddings can cost a bomb but if you opt to get married in winter you may just bag yourself a great deal. It tends to still be a less busy time of year for suppliers in the wedding business and generally you will get more for your money and have better availability. Most venues offer complete packages so use the power of Google to find the best one for you. If you are flexible you may even want to consider getting married mid-week, as well as in winter. This will make it much easier for you to sort out accommodation for your guests and again will cut the costs. It is a great way of getting the package that you want for a price to suit your budget. New Years Eve is a special day to get married on, as most people will be available to attend, many will have the next day off work already and everyone is up for a celebration, not to mention that it’s a great way to start off the new year as husband and wife.
34
Feature | Why Choose A Winter Wedding
When it comes to choosing a winter venue it may be worth considering ones with large open fires like stately homes and castles - where better to enjoy a glass of mulled wine? If there aren’t any open fires at you venue, you could use twinkling lights like the curtain in the picture above to create a pretty winter look.
RICH COLOURS and a touch of faux fur...
Some of us suit winter as a time of year more than summer. Those of us who are fair skinned and spend most of our time avoiding the sun, might prefer to celebrate in your own style and opt for a winter princess look? Fur stoles, feather shrugs and even tartan shawls look stunning on winter brides. They are great when enhanced with accessories in rich plums, forest greens, berry reds and scarlets. Sparkling tiaras and headpieces add to the wintery theme beautifully, but whatever your theme, have fun with it, winter is a truly magical time of year for you to have your big day.

Back to nature for new Shropshire wedding and event venue... “e venue really is perfect for those wanting to get back to nature. e relaxed and informal space is the kind of place where you can get married in your wellies, flip flops or heels - anything goes really! We love to encourage guests to add their own personal style with bespoke decorations such as bunting and colourful wildflowers. Of course, we can be on hand to assist in any way needed but generally we like to leave the personal touches to those hiring out the venue as we know everyone likes to add their own individual twist.” As well as using the ceremony site, guests can also make use of the forest school area by trying out some of the adventure activities such as archery and air rifle shooting. ere is also an off-grid campsite available for those wishing to stay overnight at the venue. Judie, who hosted her first wedding at the site earlier this year following a request from a friend, said: “Our venue isn’t an alternative to a hotel wedding or celebration. What you get here is truly unique and is for those really wishing to embrace nature and everything that comes with it.
A brand new woodland wedding and event venue has been launched in the heart of the Shropshire countryside. Located at Wrekin Forest School on Crudgington Moor Lane, Telford, the new rustic ceremony site has been created by owner Judie Ellis (pictured top right) in response to demand. Judie, a trained forest school leader and educator, has become well known across Shropshire over recent years for her innovative approach to the outdoors and teaching children and young people a range of unique skills. Now, the business owner is giving couples the opportunity to get back to nature and explore the wonders of the woodland site by hosting wedding ceremonies. e site, complete with tree-lined lawn and meadow, rustic barn, tipi, shepherds huts, bar area and fire pits is also being made available for other events including milestone birthdays, renewal of vows ceremonies and anniversary celebrations. Judie said: “We are absolutely delighted to officially announce the opening of our new wedding and event venue and we are looking forward to welcoming guests from across Shropshire and further afield. We have hosted a number of events already and I’m delighted to say, they have all proven extremely successful. We have of course been super lucky with the weather this year and when the sun shines, the forest backdrop provides the most spectacular setting for a friendly, rusticromance style wedding or other celebration.”
36 - Wedding Venue
“e idea was borne after a friend of mine asked to hire the site to create a surprise wedding. At first I thought she was a bit mad but slowly I began to picture how amazing a wedding day or other celebration could be here in the woodland and that’s when we started to seriously consider transforming the site. It’s taken around 12 months to get the venue event-ready with the addition of the barn, bell tent, shepherds huts, 4 berth pig ark and all the other unique elements such as log seating and marshmallow roasting fire pit. It now looks fantastic and the celebrations we’ve had so far have been spectacular. Every single one has been very different but they’ve all had a fun, friendly and natural vibe to them which is exactly the kind of memories we are trying to create for our guests.”
Events held at Wrekin Forest School Events can accommodate up to 130 guests and there are three different packages to choose from depending on the type of celebration to be held. For full details contact Judie on 07888 851813 or visit the website www.wrekinforestschool.co.uk for more information.

What you should be drinking according
to your zodiac sign...
Pie Moonshine the ideal celebratory cocktail for them. The pressed apple juice spiced with cinnamon, combined with the kick of Moonshine will leave you feeling warm but fiery.
SAGITTARIUS – SUGARED CRANBERRY MIMOSA
If you’re generous and idealistic, then Sagittarius is your zodiac companion. Perhaps you’re extroverted, dynamic and free-spirted, so all things bubbly are your goto. Try a Sugared Cranberry Mimosa, which splashes fun to classic Christmassy flavours.
CAPRICORN – SCOTCH SPICE
The cocktail market is arguably saturated, and the opportunity to make seasonally inspired cocktails are limitless. With all the classics heralding new twists, whether you are going out or mixing up your own tipple, it can be hard to decide what cocktail suits your personality. Consumer marketplace OnBuy.com thought what better way to decide than to analyse the personality traits associated with each zodiac sign, to reveal the cocktail you should be drinking.
ARIES – MISTLETOE MARTINI
Those born as an Aries are known for their passionate nature, enthusiasm and courage. Anything Vodka based compliments their fiery and youthful confidence. A Mistletoe Martini made up of cranberry and elderflower brings a wintery flair whilst delivering a nice punchy kick.
CANCER – FOR GOODNESS SAKE
Known as the ‘mother’ of all zodiac signs, those with Cancer as their star sign are tenacious, imaginative and loyal, making For Goodness Sake their cocktail of choice this winter season. This tangy blend with earthy ginger notes goes hand-in-hand with a Cancer’s warm-hearted nature.
LEO – WINTERS TRUCE
Leo men and women know how to pack a punch, so it comes as no surprise that Whiskey compliments their fiery and passionate character. Winters Truce really is a cocktail to warm the soul with its echinacea tea extracts combined with warming honey and ginger.
VIRGO – LET IT SLOE
TAURUS – BRANDY ALEXANDER
If you are kind and hardworking, you’re bound to be a Virgo. You also work more than you play, whilst Virgo’s are known to be the most careful of zodiac signs. Gin unravels a Virgo’s analytical brain, unveiling their carefree spirit. Let it Sloe will sprinkle some magic over winter with its sweet but sharp taste.
GEMINI – CRANBERRY MARGARITA
Libra individuals are gracious, fair-minded and wouldn’t dream of missing any social event. An ode to their personality, Libra’s are happiest when in the presence of others, so the popular choice of Rum in the form of a White Christmas Mojito will provide that happy snowy feeling we all crave, in the form of a classic winter tipple.
A Taurus is said to be patient, devoted and extremely reliable. A Taurus loves traditions, so a Brandy Alexander delivers the perfect balance of classic flavours with a tasty nutmeg blend. The warming combination of brandy and cognac with Crème de cacao will unleash a Taurus’s indulgent side ready for any celebrations. Gemini’s are said to be gentle and affectionate yet laced with a curious streak. Tequila brings out a Gemini’s wilder side, elevating any shy feelings. A Cranberry Margarita is a great way to add a dash of joyful cheer and a bit of sparkle to any party.
42 What’ Your Zodiac Drink?
LIBRA – WHITE CHRISTMAS MOJITO
SCORPIO – APPLE PIE MOONSHINE
Like the animal, Scorpio’s are brave and passionate. Their resourceful nature and knack for being a true friend makes Apple
Capricorn’s excel in self-control, are practical and conscientious; making them the responsible friend everyone needs around them. They know what they like and tend to stick to classic flavours. A Scotch Spice with extra cinnamon syrup will deliver that warm fuzzy feeling, even when it’s cold; making sure they don’t stray too far from a traditional favourite.
AQUARIUS – ABSINTHE EGGNOG
Aquarius individuals are deep thinkers, who love to solve complex problems. Their independence and individuality is what makes them weirdly unusual and intriguing to others. Thus, you may want to tickle your taste buds with an Absinthe Eggnog, a concoction of flavours not for the fainthearted.
PISCES – SPICED AMERICANO
Pisces are selfless, always willing to help others, whilst possessing a musical and artistic flair. Pisces tend to opt for something unusual, so a Spiced Americano delivers a unique treat this winter. Although the ingredients may come as a surprise, Jägermeister’s spicy notes paired with the fizz of prosecco yields a cocktail that’s ready to kickstart any party.

Pancake Day 5TH MARCH
2019 SIMPLE
Pancakes Method 1. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt and caster sugar into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, lightly whisk together the milk and egg, then whisk in the melted butter. 2. Pour the mixture into the flour mixture and beat until you have a smooth batter - with no lumps. Let the batter stand for a 5 minutes. 3. Heat a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and add a knob of butter. Once hot add a ladle batter (you may be able to fit 2-3 pancakes in at once if you have a large pan). Wait until the top of the pancake begins to bubble, then turn it over and cook until golden brown. 4. Repeat until all the batter is used up. You can keep the pancakes warm in a low oven, but they taste best fresh out the pan. 5. Serve with lashings of chocolate sauce, slices of banana and optional chopped nuts or you could go with classic Lemon juice and sugar sprinkled all over.
GO BANANAS...
Bananas may be considered a mood enhancer because it contains the amino acid, tryptophan and Vitamin B6 that helps the body produce serotonin.Bananas can help lower blood pressure and protect heart health due to high potassium and low salt content.Another interesting fact is that If you tape a banana peel over a splinter, the enzymes will help the splinter work its way out! Research shows that eating bananas may lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes, as well as decrease the risk of getting some cancers.

Tanning Mistakes To Avoid with Cocoa Brown By Marissa Carter...
Marissa Carter, Founder of leading tanning brand Cocoa Brown, shares the common tanning mistakes that people make and how best to avoid them to achieve a gorgeous glow with a flawless finish this party season: eyes: Again, a little bit of petroleum jelly will stop the tan from further darkening the area – no one likes panda eyes! 9) Wearing tight clothing immediately after tanning: Wear loose, dark clothing while the tan is developing and avoid contact with water as this will minimise any transfer.
10) Exfoliating too soon after tanning: The first time you shower after you’ve applied your tan, use shower gel but don’t exfoliate your skin. Cocoa Brown by Marissa Carter tanning products can be found at numerous UK stockists including Superdrug and TESCO.
No Sun, No Sand, No Sweat... 1) Applying a tan which is too dark for your skin: Embrace your natural complexion by wearing a tan to suit your skin tone. The Cocoa Brown by Marissa Carter 1 HOUR TAN MOUSSE comes in four shades to suit all, (Medium, Dark, Extra Dark and Ultra Dark) and can be developed for one, two, or three hours dependent on the depth of colour you wish to achieve. 2) Not using a tanning mitt: Tan-stained hands is a huge giveaway that your tan may not be real, so using a good quality mitt is a must. You can also add a small amount of petroleum jelly through your eyebrows to prevent the tan from discolouring them too. 3) Forgetting to apply a moisturiser to typically dry areas: Use an oil-free moisturiser such as the Cocoa Brown by Marissa Carter Chocolate Whip Oil-Free Body Moisturiser on your feet, ankles, knees, elbows and hands to ensure a totally smooth application. Health & Beauty
4) Not preparing properly: Preparation is key! Many people forget to remove traces of old self tan which can lead to an uneven application. Use the Cocoa Brown by Marissa Carter Fresh Start Tan Eraser prior to application for a flawless finish. 5) Drinking or brushing your teeth after applying tan to the face: Let your tan dry before having a drink or brushing your teeth as accidental drips may wash away the colour. This also applies to tanning with wet hair! 6) Forgetting to enhance your tan: Products like the Cocoa Brown by Marissa Carter Golden Goddess Shimmering Dry Body Oil will add an illuminating glow to your bronzed skin.
7) Staining your nails: Apply a coat of nail polish to your nails on your hands and feet, as this will prevent tan from staining the nail plate. 8) Exaggerating dark circles around your

Winter is never exactly the easiest season for dressing. That nagging thought when you pull out your favourite dress - ‘Will I be freezing in this?’ The answer is a resounding yes, but there is still hope. Teaming your dresses with tights and boots will instantly make it more winter-friendly. Sleek black tights go perfectly with patterned skirts and dresses, add some cool ankle boots or knee high slouch boots and you are ready to face the cold. If your dress is black then you can have fun with some pattered tights. Over the knee boots are the perfect choice when paired with a mini dress, whilsy cowboy boots are best teamed with a full skirt, to create a fun look. Add a chenille jumper or faux fur coat for a warm - yet stylish winter look.
A Dash of Mustard…
If you are anything like me, black grey and white are the main colours (or non-colours... I know!..) in your wardrobe but there is any easy way to add a punch of colour to your everyday wear and let’s face it - a little bit of colour goes a long way! Mustard yellow is definitely the colour of the season. It’s a more neutral hue than bright yellow making it more versatile and chic, plus it goes with just about everything!

Your Happy Place... With wellness being front and centre in people’s minds, it’s no wonder that creating a serene, happy space has become a huge interior trend to explore. Combining the best of Scandi comfort and healthfocused influences - think aromatherapy, colour psychology, and lots of plants and greenery - this wellness trend is growing, and here to stay. Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice shares 3 tips on how to create a relaxing space that can also boost wellness.

Home Edit_Double Page Editorial 05/11/2018 15:22 Page 2
Stay Home... 1. INTRODUCE SMALL, MEANINGFUL ACCESSORIES
When it comes to embracing a happier and productive space, a little goes a long way. “The trick is to decorate smart,” says Rebecca. “Go with decor elements that will easily switch up the ambience of the room, like scented candles and aroma diffusers for an instant pick-me-up.” Sarah Duncan, Reiki therapist and founder of Soul Candles, discusses the benefits of these stylish and practical accessories, and the importance of turning the home into a sanctuary. “I’m a big believer in the effects and benefits of using aromatherapy oils in the home, and the two easiest ways of going about it are with candles and diffusers. “While candles can really set the mood, you can get the same effects - and do away with potential fire risks - by opting for a diffuser, and then selecting the right oils for the right space. For example, our Relax range is ideal for the bedroom and winding down after a long day- notes like lavender, geranium and ylang ylang will lift your mood and improve cognitive function. For livelier spaces, such as the living or dining room, go with our Uplift range to awaken the senses.
2. DECORATE WITH NATURAL MATERIALS AND PLENTY OF GREENERY
It’s no secret that natural homeware and decor are big this year, with rattan pieces and the tropical aesthetic shaping up to be hot summer favourites. “Woven rugs, wooden furniture and rattan baskets are ideal picks for this look,” Rebecca says. “They lend a handcrafted appeal that complements the understated, calm tones of the space.”
3
Style tips for Mindfulness in your Home
“This is also a perfect opportunity to exercise creativity and incorporate some DIY decor. So whether it’s customised shelving or macrame wall art, the end result is a personalised creation that scores big on style without breaking the bank.” Another mood lifter to consider: indoor plants. “Greenery can be key when it comes to promoting productivity and a healthier wellbeing,” says Rebecca. “Succulents and cacti are easy to care for, but for a statement-worthy investment, a terrarium would make for a stunning feature piece.”
3. BUILD A CALM, ENERGISED SETTING WITH COLOURS AND TEXTURES
Taking visual cues from the Hygge craze last year, neutrals can set the mood for a relaxing space. “Taupe, ivory and trendy sage lend a sophisticated look that’ll work beautifully for a calm interior,” Rebecca advises. “These hues are a great foundation to work with, matching easily with other colours, and can be kept pared back or dressed up depending on your preferences.” "Neutral tones are also perfect as a background for more dramatic accent colours. Sunny shades like yellow provide a cheerful burst of creativity, while giving your space charm and personality.” “And when it comes to dialling up the comfort, layer in different textures. Think elements like a plush sofa, soft throws and even a fluffy faux fur rug for a huge boost in cosiness.”

Book Worms... A black country girl who loves to read. Living in England, it’s no surprise that I love a good Royal romance. e Royal We is possibly one of my all-time favourite books, so when I saw this available on NetGalley, it sounded right up my street. e story follows Princess eodora Isabella Victoria of Drieden of the Royal House of Laurent, who is back from four months of living in exile after her fiancé jilted her at the altar and embarrassed her in front of the entire nation. Tired of trying to be the perfect Royal, she sneaks out one night and meets a sexy but mysterious Scot at a local pub and is instantly intrigued. Relishing the chance to be a ‘normal’ person for one night, she can’t help but get drawn in by his charm. However, ea realises that her life can be anything but normal, when she finds out that Nick is a spy and isn’t above blackmail to get the answers her needs. Soon they join forces to figure out what has happened to her ex-fiancé, who no one has seen since the day of the wedding and discover a secret that could threaten the entire monarchy and change both of their lives. is is the first book I’ve read by Lindsay Emory and I will definitely be reading more. I love a good modern-day twist on a fairy tale romance and this book certainly delivered. She has a way of writing that
gets you hooked from the start, and I read this book in one sitting. I loved ea as a character. She was fun, feisty and wasn’t afraid to stand up for what she believed it. I loved how she rebelled against everything she knew to fight for what was right whilst staying loyal to her family. I also loved her relationship with Nick. Yes, it was a complete cliché, the prim and proper lady falling for the mysterious bad boy, but I’m not ashamed to admit that these are the kind of romances I love. eir chemistry was off the charts and I was rooting for them throughout. I felt the book could have done with being a couple of chapters longer. It’s funny because I normally complain about books being too long, but I felt this one kept a good pace throughout until the ending when it was rushed. Ironically it made it seem a bit unrealistic. Overall, I don’t think this book was quite up to the same standard as ‘e Royal We’, however it was a fresh romantic comedy that would be a chick lit lovers dream. I rate this book three out five stars and would recommend all those who are searching for their happy ever after to give this book a chance.

Children’s Mental Health
Help for children and teenagers struggling with stress and anxiety... When you hit that place - at whatever age - Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) really does help as I found out. RTT isn’t just about helping those with negative issues, it’s all about making sure people reach their true potential and unlock the next level of confidence to succeed or to move in a direction they may not currently see as achievable.
RTT has been developed over 30 years by Marisa Peer (my trainer and guru). As a top UK therapist for celebrities and members of the royal family, the last 3 years she has been training therapists all over the world and wants to get her specially designed material out to help as many as possible.
The things that filled my fantasy head as a little girl growing up in the 1970’s when compared to what children have access to today, do make me wonder if we could be overloading developing brains too soon or even in the right way. I remember as a child I wished I had a crystal ball, little did I know, at that time so many moments in my childhood would then go on to shape me.
Now married with 2 children, one about to leave secondary school, the other still in primary, some would say I have a good life. However, today looking back I understand the impact certain events in my past have caused. I understand the activities we focus on in our developing years define our skill set and career path and I am today very conscious of how my own children are growing up. Even more so making sure their emotional needs are being met so they feel completely supported to make the best decisions for their own futures in alignment with their natural talents. A huge challenge for every parent to make sure the adults of tomorrow have the skills to be the men and woman of the future, whilst still balancing our
58 Education Feature
own needs for happiness as their parents today.
But why is teenage anxiety on the rise? In a world where sex education and mental health are no longer taboo subjects it should be far easier to get the right level of support. But is it? And is that help at the right time? Where bullying never stops in schools and unkind words can eat away at us and we hear of youngsters taking their own lives because of their low self-esteem.
Who really teaches us to be good parents? Who shows us the best way to use supportive language that doesn’t hurt and impact our children? Who teaches us to meet the needs of our children to protect and prepare them for adult life?
The reality is that our own parents’ beliefs can be duplicated into our futures. Patterns of anxiety, depression, lack of confidence are being passed through generations. Confidence in our ability to achieve can be knocked out of us by peer pressure, teachers, those that judge and compare us, suddenly, we can find our self in a place where we feel different, not good enough or that something like love and money is not available to us.
Transforming Me by Tracy Roberts not only offers full RTT therapy for individuals (including children), I also extend my services to schools, colleges, sports facilities who would welcome support with mental strengthening for members, particularly where confidence and esteem are impacting progress.
Deep healing RTT can help all sorts of issues. The re-enforced simple reprogramming of the mind and teaching the understanding of how our decisionmaking processes and our belief system is created via neuroplasticity can also help many teenagers get a better footing into the future.

Interior Trend Predictions For Spring Summer 2019...
Home Edit
By Rebecca Snowden at www.furniturechoice.co.uk pairing a blue velvet sofa with neutral accessories in the living room creates a sophisticated, yet crisp update on a classic look.” Velvet can also add flair to a sharp, modern dining room. “ For instance, velvet dining chairs can soften the lines and edges of glass and marble tables, creating a cosy, yet chic atmosphere. And for a seasonal update it’s all about the colours. Moving away from the autumnal palette of darker greens, greys and browns, blue and silver have a lighter feel while still maintaining the elegance and sheen of velvet.”
For next season, it’s all about adding a new twist to popular trends for a refreshing change in the home. Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice, dishes on 3 of the top trend predictions for Spring/ Summer 2019 and how to get the look at home. 1. Embrace pastels as the new neutral The verdict is in - pastels are going to be big next season. And in this latest transformation, they add a new twist to neutrals and are styled in a contemporary way for maximum impact. Two key shades that are expected to shine next season are mint and peachy coral. “A versatile shade, mint is pleasant and soothing making it a great way to add a light, fresh feel to the home,” Rebecca says. “When styled with contemporary furniture, the effect is both futuristic and natural at the same time.”
And for fans of millennial pink, there’s a hot new colour in town - and it’s one that has a similar look and feel to this longtime favourite. A combination of orange and blush pink, peachy coral has been predicted by Pantone to be the next big colour for 2019. This hue has the dreamy quality of pink but grounded with orange and terracotta, making it a great shade to use in the home for those keen to
64
experiment with colour but wary of picking something that may be too overpowering.
But for those who prefer to stick to the classics, grey is a calming shade that makes an ideal choice for the bedroom. When paired with classic wooden furniture or Scandi inspired pieces this creates a relaxing and cosy ambience. In the living room, grey furniture can also be used as a backdrop against pastel accessories for a cosy, pop of colour.
2. Luxe it up with velvet A finish typically associated with autumn, velvet adds drama and depth to any room, and is easily adaptable to add some sophistication to spring and summer looks, becoming a year-round favourite. “Velvet elevates the look of the room regardless of the season,” says Rebecca. “It’s a finish that resonates well with bold colours or neutrals, depending on the look and mood of the space. For instance,
3. Art Deco returns with a millenial twist A much-loved style which has captured the imagination of many Pinterest boards, Art Deco has evolved once again - this time to fit millennial tastes and trends. This latest iteration is a minimalist take on this glamorous style, and is more strategic in terms of how colour and pattern are deployed. In this version, starting with a neutral colour palette allows lots of flexibility when it comes to using Art Deco themes and looks in the home."Using geometric patterns which match the colour palette of the room make a soft and elegant statement, while gold accents add flair to a neutral space,” advises Rebecca. “For texture, a velvet sofa is the go-to choice, creating the opulence and lushness associated with Art Deco.”

6 Practical Considerations for Your Kitchen Design...
Home Edit
Article By Brayer Design do in the kitchen, deserves good lighting. And don’t be afraid to use more than one type of lighting in your kitchen either – mix island pendant lighting, with spotlights, under cabinet strip lighting and interior cupboard lighting as well as natural lighting from windows, glass doors and roof lanterns to really shed some light on the situation.
6) Keep it Zoned
It might sound a little boring but a perfect kitchen is only really perfect when it not only looks good but is practical too. So here are 6 practicalities to consider when drawing up your kitchen designs.
bonus that it allows you to keep small kitchen appliances like toasters, kettles, coffee machines and food processors from cluttering up your countertops.
1) Incorporate Island Seating
And by this, we don’t just mean plonk a few stools next to your island – if you’re having a breakfast bar, make sure you incorporate an overhang in the design of your island to provide legroom for you, the kids and any guests.
2) Spread Out
We recommend that you leave at least 1 metre of space between your kitchen worktops to allow for clearance of open drawers and cabinets doors. And if you have it to spare, an extra 20cm or so of space will give you even more room to manoevre around open appliances such as oven and dishwasher doors.
3) Keep Unsightly Sockets Secret
Plug sockets may be unsightly but they are pretty vital pieces of kit in the kitchen. Thankfully, nowadays there are lots of clever ways to hide your electricity sources, such as island pop up power outlets or you can opt to install sockets inside cupboards, pantries or kitchen cabinets. This method has the added
Home & Garden
4) Don't Forget the Dishwasher
Find a space in your kitchen plan for your dishwasher that’s not too far from your sink. This will not only prove convenient when you’re transferring items from the sink/drainer to the dishwasher (and vice versa) but it will also make life a lot easier when it comes to plumbing in your appliance. It’s also important to make sure you position your dishwasher so you can access it from both sides – corner plots are ill-advised.
5) Let ere be Light
We cannot stress how important lighting is in a kitchen. For food preparation, dining, reading the Sunday morning papers – anything and everything that you
Perhaps the most important tip when it comes to designing your kitchen! If you're already planning and plotting your new kitchen layout, the chances are that you’ve already heard of the kitchen work triangle – a design theory which makes the practical and sensible suggestion of laying out your kitchen around the three major kitchen appliances: the cooker, the sink and the fridge/freezer. But with our kitchens getting bigger, filled with more appliances and used for more things than ever before, it’s perhaps better to consider your kitchen layout in terms of ‘zones’ rather than in the traditional triangle sense. Instead of letting single appliances dictate the space, think about your cooking zone, a cleaning zone, an entertaining zone, a baking zone – even a kids zone. Considering the space in terms of zones will not only help you create a practical working kitchen but it’ll also highlight the aspects of your kitchen design that are important to you, your family and your lifestyle.

Fast Track Your Fertility with Emma Cannon...
Every fertility journey is different but when it comes to planning for pregnancy, getting your (and your partner’s) mind and body as healthy as possible is beneficial all round. Fertility and integrated women’s health expert Emma Cannon shares her top tips for helping you to prepare your body for pregnancy.
4) Shape up
Getting fit before conception is very important as it will help your body cope better with the demands of pregnancy. Exercise is key to maintaining a healthy weight which is vital as obesity has been linked to increased infertility. As a guide, your preconception weight should be within 15lbs (7kg) of the ideal range for your height. If you’re not an avid exerciser, try introducing gentle exercise, such as brisk walking, swimming or yoga. Consistency is key so find a routine you enjoy and make sure you dedicate 30 minutes three times a week. Physical exercise also plays a role in mental wellbeing, relieving stress and releasing endorphins known as ‘happy hormones’. However be careful not to over exercise as extreme exercise can have a detrimental
Make A Healthy Difference...
1) Nourish your body
When thinking about trying to conceive, eating well, as in eating nutritionally optimal foods, may improve your fertility. And then there is the added bonus, that when a woman does get pregnant, both she and her baby’s health and development may be optimised with healthy eating habits. Eat a rainbow diet, in other words, a wide variety of foods! Your plate should be mainly plantbased with a small amount of meat per week if you eat meat. Grains which have been soaked well before use, as well as seeds and nuts which are great for your health in small quantities as well as good quality fats and oils in the diet- try olive, hemp, or pumpkin oil. It is recommended that we should eat between 5-8 portions of fruit and veg per day, with the emphasis on vegetables as fruits are often high in sugar. It is also worth considering taking probiotics and prebiotics as these may help improve gut health.
2) Make time for looking after yourself
Life’s busy and stress can play havoc with our ability to rest and relax. Too much stress can also affect our hormone levels which subsequently impact the menstrual cycle, affecting fertility. The same holds true for men as well. Stress has been linked to poor
Health & Beauty
sperm quality. Emotional health is just as important as physical health so take some time out every single day to improve your wellbeing. Find something which works for you – e.g. relaxing bath, baking, reading a book or get you partner to give you a massage. Meditation is also great for increasing stress resilience so why not take some time to practise this as it is a great skill to have, not only when you are in the preconception stage but throughout pregnancy, labour and beyond!
3) Get cycle savvy!
Adopting a healthy lifestyle is key to getting your body ready, but for conception to occur you have to put yourself in the right situation at the right time! Each woman’s cycle length is unique, so it is important to understand how your own body works as there is only a small window each month where conception is even possible. The myLotus Fertility Monitor is a new device which is the only product available that quantitively monitors a woman’s personal Luteinising Hormone levels which indicate impending ovulation (aka the best time to have sex!). By being able to identify this, a woman can maximise her chances of natural conception and gain a whole lot on information about her cycle. For more information visit, www.mylotus.com.
impact on the body; low body fat can stop periods all together and I have seen an increase in hypothalamic amenorrhea (e.g. menstruation stops due to problems with the hypothalamus) from over exercise. Moderation is key!
5) Support with Complementary Therapies
Complementary therapies have been used for thousands of years to help heal and correct bodily imbalances. One of the oldest being acupuncture, which works by rebalancing your energy flow and primes the body, has been linked to improved fertility. For women wanting to conceive, acupuncture can be used to regulate hormone function, increasing blood flow to the ovaries and uterus and help to relax muscles which can improve the chance of an embryo implanting. Mention it to your partner too, as acupuncture may also improve sperm motility and optimise male fertility hormone levels.

Busting the myths around your new winter beauty regime...
There is a lot of beauty advice out there, from 10-step Korean skincare regimes to Keratin haircare treatments.
We’re here to bust the myths around heat, cleansing and hydration, ensuring you get the best out of your winter regime. favourite cleansing wipes are the OPTASE TTO Lid Wipes (£9.99 available in Boots), which is tea tree oil-based with added camomile, aloe vera and hyaluronic acid for maximum powerful yet gentle cleansing.
HYDRATION MYTHS
1) Drinking water makes your hair shine...
Drinking enough water is important for healthy hair and scalp as it promotes blood flow and extension growth, helping to strengthen fibres. However, you won’t notice shiny tresses from drinking water alone. The natural moisture levels for your hair are between 8% and 12%, but this can’t be replenished by water intake. The only way to promote a glossy sheen is to use protective
Heat, Cleanse, Hydrate...
HEAT MYTHS
1) Heat is never good for hair...
We all know the damage that hairdryers and tongs can do to our hair – the flash drying effect not only evaporates surface water but also the moisture that binds to our hair, meaning hair becomes brittle. Use a cool setting to minimise this if you can’t let your hair air dry. Heat isn’t always the enemy though, heated oil-based treatments can reduce dandruff, promote the growth of new hair, and help hair retain its moisture. Hot oil treatments have multiple benefits for both hair and scalp; smoothing cuticles, moisturising skin, stimulating blood flow and, in turn, hair growth.
2) Hot water opens your pores...
Whether you’re splashing your face with hot or cold water, your pores remain the same. Hot soapy water cuts through grease but doesn’t open your pores. It can dry out your skin and remove natural oils, causing sensitivity and irritation, especially on the delicate skin around the eyes. Instead loosen the sebum with the power of steam, to reduce the appearance of pores. Boil 1–2 cups of water, adding a couple of drops of
Health & Beauty
essential oils, and place a clean hand towel over the back of your head. Hold your face close enough to feel the heat without it being too hot – the length of a lemon is usually the right distance. Try to stay in this position for five minutes, and then gently exfoliate away the sebum. Use a cold flannel, or splash cold water on your face, then pat dry.
CLEANSING MYTHS
1) Oil-based products will make your skin break out...
Finding the right cleansing style for your skin is important. A lot of high-street cleansers are cream-based but cleansing with natural oils can have a wealth of benefits. ‘Natural’ is key as synthetic oils may cause spots but coconut, avocado and grape-seed oils bind to oil on the skin, helping to control further oil production.
2) Normal make up remover wipes are fine for my eyes...
The skin around the eyes is so delicate, many of us don’t use a specialised cleanser when removing our waterproof mascara. Tea tree oil is one of the best cleansing and healing ingredients that loves delicate skin! It also has natural antimicrobial properties which makes it a great part of any skincare regime. Our
and restorative oils to lock in moisture on the strands and flatten the cuticles.
2) Heavy moisturisers work best on dry skin...
Our skin contains mostly water so keeping it hydrated inside and out is essential for preventing premature ageing and promoting a healthy glow. During the winter, the cold weather can cause our dry patches to intensify and become flaky, but this doesn’t always mean you should use a heavy moisturiser. Every day we lose dry or dead skin cells, so using rich moisturisers on flaking skin is often too little, too late. Instead, try a moisturiser that smooths and supports the skin’s natural protective barrier. This will have the dual benefit of boosting protection from cold weather without being too heavy on the skin, and will also allow light to reflect from a more even surface, giving a Winter Beauty more radiant Myths Busted! complexion.

If Your Partner Stops Doing ese 7 Gestures, Your Relationship May Be At Risk... The saying, “It’s a long good-bye” is true because most of us can’t see the woods from the trees until ‘Elvis’ or ‘your honey’ has left the building. By then it’s usually too late and the only option you have is to separate your belongings and figure out your next move. (No, keying their car is NOT a wise option.) However, here are seven gestures that can indicate that you are about to be tossed out in the cold. With these signs you have a real opportunity to be one step ahead of the impending crash. You can regain your power and decide if and when to hit the breaks to avoid heading towards a dead end relationship. If you want you and you alone can restart your beloved’s motor so they are heading towards you not away from you...
The first clue that your lover is pulling away is that you find them calling you more and more by your first name. The echo of that gushy, silly pet name they once cooed you has disappeared. It’s as though they have amnesia about the juicy, lovey dovey secret stuff you shared. Now it feels as though you are back to square one on a first name basis. This indicates their desire to forget the wonderful times because they are getting the courage to give you the boot. No, not Louboutin boots! This boot is going to hurt, not just your feet, but your entire soul.
They have become what I call “Busy Bees.” They are really zooming everywhere just to avoid touching base with you back home at the hive. If you push them to move closer emotionally during their day they sweetly reply, “I’m so slammed at work. I don’t have even a second to spare.” If that doesn’t make you pull your stinger back in, your continued request are met with harsh disdain, “I would think you’d be proud of my commitment to make a better life.” Bulls-h-t!
Relationship Advice
Everyone has a minute or so to text someone they love. It has to make one wonder where else they are getting their honey.
Next comes what I call ‘the sail away.’ Your S.O. doesn’t seem to feel the need to be as significantly present in joining in your activities. Excuses are the norm, “I think I’m going to change gyms. I like the weight room better. You can stay at that one. You love it. It would be ridiculous for you to move.” They wave happily goodbye with a skip in their step like a kid at play. Why? They have just cunningly done ‘the sail away’ without one single look of disapproval on your face. Bon voyage, pack your bags; your ship has just about left the harbour forever. A tsunami in your life is about to strike. Even more unsettling are the signs that they are giving out, or not giving out, when they are at home. It’s beginning to feel like pulling teeth for them to show up at family get to togethers. It’s as though they’d rather have a root canal then have to face your parents, siblings, or closest friends. You wonder, “What is going on?” Your partner has taken an emotional shot of novocaine and has numbed out of your world. It’s not a dental issue he needs, it’s a truth serum.
That leads us to gifts for holidays, especially the ones you both shared privately. Little notes on the kitchen table with hearts remembering your first date or the first time you moved in together? It’s a though there is now a shortage in paper and pens at your place. In truth, the heart is still around but just not focussed on moments you once shared. I mean, seriously, there’s only so much love to pass around! Two is company and three is a temporary condition of insanity until someone leaves the room out of exhaustion and disappointment.
Do you remember when you both enjoyed hours talking and visualizing exciting places to travel, building your dream home, or what pondering together what life will be like in twenty years? Silence is golden. There is more being said here then you may want to recognize. Your significant other no longer envisions themselves in your future but doesn’t know how to verbalize it so it’s ignored. Statistically, more men than women are passive aggressive. The outcome is that the elephant in the living room gets bigger and bigger until it sucks the air out of both of you. If your partner has become too quiet? Beware of the calm before the storm and stop appeasing him with peanuts.
Last, but certainly not least, is the whole infidelity issue. If your partner is not screwing you, they are screwing someone else. The red flags include changes in their behaviours. You no longer have to remind them to get a haircut. They have a renewed dedication to turning off their phones and computers when they go to bed or are out. The most obvious sign of infidelity is a loss of interest in sex with you. They don’t bug you for it any more. They seem to lack interest in it. Often they come home totally exhausted from wherever they told you they were. A quick shower as soon as they get home is always a cautionary clue you need to investigate.
Sometimes they say stupid things too. I once realized a guy was cheating on me when he asked, “Where do girls get Brazilian waxes?” I did not have one. Wow! What a stupid idiot. Yes, SEX is a primal drive that can override logic putting children, money, and history on the bottom of their priority list. The rush of passion is a force that has created wars, caused murders, and lost millions in assets. Never underestimate its power to separate and divide you from your loved one. Isn’t it nice to know your doggy is faithful no matter what! Often, the main reason one partners comes to fork in the road, is that one of this threesome has to go. Usually the pressure the ‘other one’ they are snooping becomes intolerable. By the way “Sharing” is still not welcomed among most couples and no one in their right mind will put up with it forever. These are the gestures disinterested partners give. Be aware of them so you aren’t blasted out of the water in shock without a survival net. Still, I want you to remember that no one should lie to you, ignore you, or cheat on you. Couples that love and respect one another work out differences without resorting to such destructive behaviours. You are a valuable, fabulous human being. Think about this, “If someone truly doesn’t want you, what would you want them?” Other than hurt pride, which does pass, nothing is worth your personal integrity and self-worth. Good luck in love! by Author April Kirkwood See website. aprilkirkwood.com

‘It's simply A star’... Mercedes A 180d AMG Line.
What we wear says who we are. Signifiers swarm in super abundance in our style conscious modern age. We don't just wear clothes, we wear badges of identity, accessible to the public gaze the moment we step outside the gilded palaces we call our homes. And the minute we clamber into our shiny new cars we encase ourselves in mobile messages that betray both the scope of our ambitions and the limitations of our means.
Thankfully, individuals of taste and discernment who nonetheless prefer public profiles of an unshowy and yet distinguished nature do have somewhere to turn. The Mercedes A Class range of cars is without question a consequence of a certain discernment among a certain type of cultured customer who abhors vulgarity and yet acknowledges the need for stylishness. The sort who hate waste and yet waste no time on stinginess: the men and women who see that the best things in life sometimes cost money and are aware of the fact that money well spent is not the same thing as an extravagance. The sort of customer in fact who looks at the new Mercedes A Class and likes the view very much indeed - particularly since the new improved model is longer, wider and has more luggage space.
Here is a motor car that delivers saloon car refinement in a compact package. The design trick is to acknowledge hatchback virtues while retaining the poise and stateliness of a four door saloon. You won't

see anywhere a more elegant looking and yet sensibly proportioned modern car. It's the sort of car that demands deference without sacrificing democratic principles. In other words, a 'peoples car' for the right sort of people. Only certain cars feel special. For some a Mercedes Benz is a special drive: it has to be because it is a Mercedes. The logic may be circular but so are wheels. One never needs doubt where ones bet is best placed on the roulette wheel of choosing clever when you cleverly choose the badge of the three-pointed star.
As I pointed the car forwards that famous badge of quality led the way out of the hallowed driveway of hope and onto the avenue of dreams. I realised that reassuring sense of absolute security that comes from driving one of motorings truly special ones. Yes, one has to be objectively critical when assessing the attributes of any new car. But the truth of the matter is that this real charmer is so charming that criticism is immediately disarmed. After all, is it appropriate to cavil at caviar? For instance, some may express doubt that the new A Class is refined enough to be called real classy. The ride might be a teeny bit too firm for sensitive souls, nor is it quiet enough for those who wish to apprehend the music of celestial spheres as they rotate in perfect harmony. To such critics the riposte is immediate. Don't mistake stylish tweed for slippery silk. The A Class is simply what it is. And that amounts to a sophisticated updating of all that is appealing in a hatchback. You won't feel stinted in the luxury department even while you relish the reward of good sense motoring. In short, to
By Syd Taylor ask for better is to ask for the moon. Personally I would settle for the three pointed star thank you very much.
But enough flannel. Instead sit down in one of the most super abundantly appointed and frankly luxurious cabins: similar in some respects to the flagship S Class. Behold all those buttons, touch screens and roller switches. There's even an option of Attention Assist to monitor your state of alertness. It probably reads your mind! So inhale that aroma of A Class ozone, select your take off gear and go. No need really to check fuel levels for the A Class with a 116bhp 1.4 4 cylinder diesel driving through a seven speed auto. gearbox, doesn't drink like a Bavarian. Rather it sips from the tank with slow considered sobriety. 68.9 mpg overall is claimed. That's not to say that it is anything but not quick off the mark and will keep on going so far as the law allows up to nearly 125mph.
'If only..' I thought, as I dodged potholes on my way to the PEOPLE'S PLAZA, we had a governing class eager to undertake the obvious and build proper roads etc., etc.. You know the argument only too well, but in the real world of hard choices banishing hard shoulders and penny pinching purveyors of mendacity, we must learn to accept the inevitable. And while at least we are free and able to drive our cars on what's left of the highway, let us at least indulge in A class transportation. It does wonders for the soul. This compact car oozes good breeding. It's swift, sure and precise to drive. It goes like a real goer should and stops like a backstop. Parked at The Plaza people automatically showed glances of approval. It's not just the badge. It looks so good you just can't resist a second glance. And, of course, your correspondent, being a simple peasant, took to the reflected glory like a supermodel to a mirror. It's the ultimate deliverer of upward social mobility. No matter what the seasons, this seasoned performer is spicy enough to invigorate and sensible enough to play safe. The A Class costs sensible money at £28,540 otr. It's simply A star.

Wacky Races 2019 “We are a local family firm, providing Office Products and expertise in Shropshire as well as nationwide. The two company Partners are life-long motorsport enthusiasts who like to support their chosen charity, Climbing Out, so Wacky Races seemed a great opportunity to have lots of fun, and raise some money too. Some of our enthusiastic staff will be part of them team, from building the Soapbox to providing the motive power (pushing!) to the driving. We will be the noisy team, having lots of fun, raising money but aiming to win!”
Recently they announced the 44 teams that will be competing in Shrewsbury Wacky Races on Sunday 26 May. The event is the first of its kind to be held in the town and will see the teams hurtle themselves down the hill in Shrewsbury Quarry through chicanes and turns hopefully avoiding the River Severn! It promises to be an exciting and fun filled day with lots of entertainment from all the teams.
The teams in the running are from all over Shropshire and represent businesses, charities, education, community groups, families and individuals. They include Beaver Bridges who are planning on building a solid Bridge like structure Soapbox! A 9 year old designing a shark style soapbox for his dad to drive. Warm Runnings the fastest bobsleigh in Shropshire! Rowton Brewery, Little Rascals Foundation, Telford RAF Cadets among many others. Craig Hughes from Chrisbeon said
Chris Greenough from Salop Design & Engineering said “We are a long established Shrewsbury company specialising in engineering, fabrication, powder coating and haulage. We are looking to build a soapbox that will grab attention and win the event. We promote apprenticeships, and to this end, our young engineers will help design and build our entry. We support local events, and connect with schools and local groups where we can. Always keen to get involved, helping support and looking to lead the way. The Quarry is the perfect venue, hilly and ready for the crowds. We can’t give away our full idea for the soapbox at this stage – but we will release more details over the coming weeks and months.”
Sally Johnson from the Harry Johnson Trust said “The Harry Johnson Trust is a very small, completely volunteer run charity which offers help and support to local babies, children and teenagers with cancer. All of these children receive care from the children's oncology ward at Telford hospital and live in Shropshire and Mid Wales. Support is wide ranging and varied, and tailored to the needs of the individual child and family. Referrals come from the ward staff, so the child receives the right support at the right time. We hope that our participation in these races will raise awareness of our charity and spread the word about what we do.” Sarah Belcher from Sarah Belcher Events said ‘We are delighted with the teams we have for the event and they are set to make the event very memorable and raise a lot of money for their chosen charities. Our Headline Sponsor, Hatfields Jaguar Land Rover Shrewsbury, will not give anything away of their design however did tease the Shrewsbury Wacky Races team with a photo of their design covered up by a dust sheet!”
Shrewsbury Wacky Races will take place on Sunday 26 May 2019, is Shrewsbury’s first soapbox derby and already has a huge social following of families, sports fans and cycle enthusiasts from across the Midlands for this spectacular event and its festival atmosphere.

Budgen Motors customers enjoy Subaru off-road driving experience... Award-winning dealership, Budgen Motors, held an offroad driving event on the 19th October 2018 at the West Mid Showground, with over 60 customers attending.
Budgen Motors acquired the sole Subaru franchise in Shropshire in March 2018 and has been keen to promote the abilities of the 4×4 range. The three Subaru models used at the driving day were the XV, Forester and Outback; a special off-road course provided customers with the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the capabilities of the vehicles. These cars are known for their reliability and versatility, being able to handle muddy fields and the school run! With many families being customers, safety remains a huge factor of course; the Subaru XV is particularly impressive, coming 2nd place in the Car Safety
category in the 2018 What Car? Awards and holding a 5star Euro NCAP rating.
Sam Owen, Sales Director at Budgen Motors, said: “Subaru is a fantastic addition to our dealerships in Shrewsbury and Telford. The team has been keen from the start to properly experience the off-road abilities of these vehicles but felt the best way to do that was with Subaru owners! It was a wellreceived event and truly showed what Subaru’s SUVs are capable of.” Not only did customers enjoy getting behind the wheel of a Subaru, refreshments were laid on throughout the day as well as a hog roast.

Birds in Winter_Double Page Editorial 17/12/2018 15:52 Page 1
BIRDS NEED FAT...
To Stay Fit This Winter At this time of year, the days are short and cold, and our wild birds will be spending much of the available daylight looking for food with a high energy content. They need to find food that is so rich in calories that the surplus can be stored as fat during the day and then burnt off during the night to keep warm. Birds have just around 8 daylight hours to replace the energy used. There’s usually lots of competition at the feeders so the smaller birds such as Blue Tits and Robins often have to wait until the larger birds have had their fill, further reducing the time available to feed.
Putting out energy-rich foods such as sunflower hearts is a big help to a wide range of species, but when the weather gets cold the best approach is to give the birds exactly what they need: fat. Our Peanut Cakes are based on a mix of high quality suet and peanut flour providing over 600 calories in every 100 grams, making each mouthful a vital energy boost. Peanut Cake Squares weigh 300 grams and fit into a range of inexpensive feeders or can be provided loose on a bird table or the ground. Peanut Cake Tubes are larger at 500 grams and 1 kilo and can be hung from the integral stalk, fed loose like the squares, or
used with one of the specialist peanut cake feeders. Squares and tubes can also be rubbed into the bark of trees to provide a “feeding strip” of fat crumbs which are too small for larger birds to bother with but ideal for the smaller species like Long-tailed Tits, Treecreepers and Goldcrests which seldom dare to “mix it” with Great Tits and Starlings at the feeders.
We have several flavours which include nourishment from berries, insects and mealworms. Try a selection pack to see which varieties your birds like the most.
If Starlings and Magpies tend to consume everything that is put out there is a solution in the form of the Fat Ball & Suet Feeder Guardian, a caged feeder which protects fat balls, peanut cake squares and peanut cake tubes from larger birds. Easy to refill even on a frosty morning, the feeder can be hung, pole mounted or used free standing and holds up to ten fat balls or one individual peanut cake square or tube.
This year we have a delightful range of Sunflower Heart and Suet Treats for your garden birds to feast on. Not only are they beautiful as outdoor tree decorations at this festive time of year, but they are packed with essential calories and goodness. Furthermore, if you are looking for an unusual gift for bird lovers, our Winter Cake Pack is a bundle of fat products which will keep the birds feasting for many weeks to come.
