Wimpy Burger By Lily Bennett

e Wimpy restaurant returned to the heart of Shrewsbury town centre back in April, following a huge investment in the new premises in Claremont Street. is 100 seat restaurant has an emphasis on the brand’s strong heritage and traditions, while also featuring bright colours, classic furnishings and updated uniforms. Wimpy is not your average ‘burger joint’ – you get table service, food served on china plates and even a proper set of cutlery.

12 Eating Out

My partner James and I went along to Wimpy on a beautiful ursday afternoon, we were immediately greeted by the friendly staff who showed us to our table and gave us some menus to check out. We were given three menus; e Breakfast menu, e Burger menu and e Dessert menu. Both of us reached for the burger menu, eager to sample a famous Wimpy burger. e Wimpy King-size instantly caught James’ eye whereas the Original Half-pounder took my fancy. We both opted for onion rings as our side dish and we were feeling greedy so we also decided to share some chips between us. We were so sidetracked by our stomachs that we almost forgot to order our drinks! James and I both chose a Pepsi; However James decided to have his made into an ice cream float. When our drinks arrived at the table, James took one sip of his and insisted that I try it. Although I thought it an unusual combination at first, I had to agree that the fresh, sweet Pepsi taste combined with the creamy vanilla ice cream was lovely. Shortly, our burgers had arrived - huge towers, carefully balancing all of the ingredients between the fresh buns and held together with a wooden spike. e Wimpy King-size promised 3 x beef burgers with 2 cheddar cheese slices, tomato, lettuce, onion and burger relish served on a white bun; it certainly delivered. For me, the Original Half-pounder consisted of 2 x Wimpy quarter pounder burgers with cheddar cheese, lettuce, onion and the Wimpy Special Sauce; my burger was juicy and succulent and James commented, between bites, that his was simply

Wimpey Review_Double Page Editorial 07/06/2018 12:58 Page 2

delicious. e onion rings were perfectly battered and the chips were crispy yet beautifully light and fluffy inside. By the time we had both devoured our burgers, we were completely full and my jeans suddenly felt a lot tighter! But no matter how stuffed we were, we still managed to find room for dessert. James chose the impressive ‘Eskimo Waffle’ which comes as a towered ice cream sandwich made with warm waffles, whipped cream and a sauce of your choice; in James’ case this was a classic chocolate sauce. I chose the more traditional dessert which is favored by many people Sticky Toffee pudding drizzled with a thick caramel sauce and served with custard, cream or ice cream. My simplistic dessert was executed perfectly, the light sponge was saturated with caramel which gave it the enjoyable melt in the mouth texture and the vanilla ice cream only added to this wonderful dessert. James couldn’t stop himself from stealing a bite of my pudding and also polished off his own, claiming that it was a divine way to end the meal. It is great to see Wimpy return to Shrewsbury. We are excited to see the return of this popular restaurant to the town, offering great food, great service and terrific value for money. e restaurant is open seven days a week, including 8.30am-5pm on Sundays.

Let’s explore

Oswestry... Getting lost around Oswestry in summer is a great way to while away the hours, exploring the sights and sounds of the Borderlands can keep one busy for days on end. Old Oswestry is as good a place to start as any, the 3000 year old hill fort is one of the best in the country and even though the ramparts have worn over time, it is still a very impressive sight to behold. Take a leisurely stroll up and enjoy the magnificent view from the top. To find out a little more about the history of the town, pay a visit to Oswestry Town Museum in e Guildhall - with lots of interesting facts and while we are talking museums, you really should pop in to Cambrian Heritage Railway where local enthusiasts are working to extend the line - if you go on the weekend, you can go for a ride on the rails too. If history is your ‘bag’ then don’t miss the wartime trenches experience at Park Hall Farm. Close by you will find Oswestry Show Ground, with events all year round, from antique fairs to the main event; the Oswestry Show. A one day celebration of all things rural, with animals, fresh produce, antique vehicles and a full programme of events. e British Ironwork Centre and Sculpture Park on the outskirts of Oswestry is a truly unique attraction, a metal sculpture trail with everything from a golden giraffe to a huge Spoon Gorilla. ere are lots of interesting events all year round.

Pistyll Rhaeadr

and the surrounds... Whichever direction you head, there is something of interest to see, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Chirk Castle, Llangollen, Ellesmere, Wem and not to be missed, the pretty village of Whittington. e castle and moat are home to historic reenactments throughout the summer and be there in October for the spooky ghost tours. Ellesmere, sits on the meres created by the Ice Age glaciers. Take a trip on the lake on the little cruiser that goes around the lake through the summer, or you could enjoy the fragrance of sweet peas at the Eckford Sweet Pea Society’s summer show in Wem this July. Lake Vyrnwy is renowned for the RSPB bird reserve, the whole family can enjoy 12 whole miles of flat bicycle circuit of the lake - you don’t even have to take your own bike as there is bicycle hire available on site. Pistyll Rhaeadr is a waterfall, located a few miles from the village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant in Powys, Wales, twelve miles west of Oswestry. e tallest stage is estimated at about 40 metres and it is counted as one of the Seven Wonders of Wales - even drawing visitors like David Beckham who dropped in by helicopter - he described it as ‘ridiculously beautiful’. ere is car parking space near the foot of the waterfall for people who want to explore the waterfall, with a café and a B&B alongside. Go explore!

Ellesmere...

and the surrounds...

It's hard to imagine that this pretty little town in the heart of Shropshire was actually the catalyst for one of the greatest canal networks in the country and subsequent feats of engineering that challenged the great omas Telford but it's true. Ellesmere is a lovely town and well worth a visit this summer.

School’s Out For Summer!...

Summer Holiday Survival Guide

GARDEN GEMS... You would be surprised how many children love to garden. Growing some simple tomato plants or strawberries can be a really rewarding way of keeping them busy - plus they get to enjoy eating the harvest once they are ripe. Get some small trowels and forks (you can get them from the pound shops) and set aside a small ‘plot’ or even a couple of planters and encourage them to get growing.

BUILD A DEN...

Just how do you keep the kids occupied for 6 weeks?... As a parent I love the school holidays, yes - you read it correctly! I know a lot of parents dread the thought of trying to fill (and fund) a whole six weeks with interesting, fun things to do, but for me it’s so nice just not having to do the morning wake-up ritual and school runs. ere are lots of great things to do and see both locally and a little further afield, from roaming the local beauty spots like the Long Mynd to ice-skating or trampolining. You don’t even have to leave home to have fun, with the better weather comes paddling pools and super soakers which keep both big and little kids amused for hours on end. So where are the best places in and around Shropshire to visit? If you love nature and wildlife then head over to Battlefield Falconry Centre in Shrewsbury, where you can get up-close and personal with Hawks and Owls. Whilst in

30

Shrewsbury you could visit e Quarry Park or take a short drive over to Church Stretton and take in the beauty of e Long Mynd (*Dog owners beware though, as there have been some suspected cases of Alabama Rot around the Carding Mill Valley area). Oswestry is home to the British Ironwork Centre, home of the largest displays of decorative metalwork, set in glorious Shropshire countryside. It is a fab day out for the whole family. If you are looking for a museum to visit then you are in the right place. With the Ironbridge Gorge and RAF Museum Cosford on the doorstep, you will have no trouble filling your days, or you could even go to prison - Jailhouse Tours offer great guided tours of the historic Dana Prison, which is fascinating. Other great days out include Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom, Telford Town Park, Hawkstone Park Follies, Attingham Park, to name just a few - Enjoy Summer in Shropshire!

Feature | Summer Holiday Survival Guide

Even a small garden can accommodate a den. Make from a tee-pee made from bean sticks and sheets or get a small garden shed, kitted out with some bean bags, you will have to drag them back in the house come bedtime. Or set up a tent indoors for them to have a picnic or play some games in indoor camping can be great fun too.

WHAT ABOUT RAIN?... Visit a museum, library or take a train ride or there are loads of swimming pools locally, which is always a great way to spend a rainy day. Grab some rackets and a soft ball and go to the local leisure centre for a game of tennis - most councils run some really cheap rates for kids during the school breaks. If you don’t mind getting wet, put on some old clothes and wellies and go on a muddy walk - jumping in puddles is great fun.

Gin Is In.

Best Gin Around

Sloe Gin: For a perfect ready-made Gin Liqueur try this Rhubarb & Ginger Flavoured one by Edinburgh Gin it’s Amazing!

Which Gin Is e Best?...

London Dry Gin:

Dry? Craft? or maybe you like it Sloe? What ever way you like your gin, it is important to pick a decent one, so we put together some of our favourites for you to try out for yourself.

e best-known and most popular type of gin, with flowery and aromatic characteristics, which result from botanicals, mainly juniper, being added during the second or third distillation. Great for cocktails and martinis. We love Langleys Number 8 & Sainsbury’s Blackfriars Gin.

With more than 40 million bottles of Gin sold in the UK every year, according to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, demand is high and there is a huge range of exciting brands to try, each with their own flavour and style who would have thought the humble juniper berry would cause such a stir. So which one do you choose? We feel that after slurping as many gins as we have, we can consider ourselves as experts! Ok, maybe not experts but it does make us pretty knowledgeable about such things, so let us help you to find the perfect one for you.

42

Feature | Gin Is In

is red liqueur is gin flavoured with sloe (blackthorn) drupes – a small relative of the plum. e traditional production method involves soaking the sloes in the gin, using sugar to ensure the sloe juice is extracted from the fruit, but many commercial sloe gins are made by flavouring cheaper neutral grain spirits. Monkey 47 Sloe Gin is my personal favourite but Sipsmith Sloe Gin is a close second.

Craft Gin: is modern type of gin uses the same distilling process as traditional gin, but is typically infused with additional flavours. Hendrick’s Gin, for me is a winner - with a clean, refreshing taste, thanks to an unusual mix of botanicals including cubeb berries, elderflower, chamomile and yarrow. If you want a solid G&T, with a floral aroma, look no further.

Pair of Giant Gin & Tonic Glasses £14.99 from e Present Finder

Old Tom Gin: A sweetened version of London dry gin, with syrup and/or citrus notes. Great for older gin cocktail recipes, including Tom Collins. Haymans Old Tom is our top pick. Tanqueray Old Tom Gin is also a pretty good though.

Easy SUMMER

Recipes

Fig & Ricotta Sandwich

Ingredients Fresh Multi-seed Bread (Uncut & Freshly Baked) or you can use your favourite bread if you like. 4 Fresh Figs 1 250g tub of Ricotta Cheese Organic Squeezy Clear Honey 340G Walnut Pieces 200G

Method is sandwich is both easy to prepare and amazingly tasty. It makes a brilliant light lunch and is a really refreshing twist on the humble sandwich.

Fruity Summer Sangria Mix up a jug of ice-cold Spanish Sangria; the perfect cocktail for hot summer days!

Ingredients To make a pitcher of Sangria... 750ml Red Wine 150ml Triple Sec 150ml Brandy 200ml Lemonade 50ml Lemon Juice 2 Tbsp Sugar 80ml Orange Juice 1 Lemon - cut into slices 1 Orange - cut into slices 1 Lime - cut into slices 10 Cherries - Maraschino Fresh mint to garnish

Method Mix the red wine together with the brandy, lemon juice, lemonade, orange juice, triple sec, and sugar - and give it a good stir. Immerse the slices of lemon, orange and lime, along with the cherries in the mixture, then allow to chill in the fridge overnight to get the very best flavour. If you like it fizzy, add club soda before serving. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint - summer in a glass.

Slice a fresh loaf, and spread with a generous layer of ricotta cheese. Slice the Figs and arrange on top. Drizzle with honey and sprinkle some walnuts over. Simply amazing.

FIG FACTS Fresh figs, high in phytonutrients and antioxidants such as carotenes, tannins, lutein, and chlorogenic acid among others and antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin A, E, and K. Together, these compounds found in figs help scavenge harmful oxygen-derived free radicals from the body, helping to protect us from things like cancers, diabetes, degenerative diseases, and infections too - pretty cool eh?!

Kylie.

Big Celebrities Touring Locally

UK & IRELAND TOUR 21 September 2018, Genting Arena, Birmingham You can count on the fingers of one hand the number of “pop” artists who’ve lasted more than a decade, let alone more than two! In July 1987 Kylie released her first single; a remake of the 1962 Little Eva hit “Locomotion”. e song hit No.1 in Australia and remained in the top spot for seven weeks, becoming the biggest Australian single of the ‘80’s. Two decades later Kylie achieved the record for the most played female artist on UK radio over the last 20 years! Kylie Minogue released her new album ‘Golden’ back on 6th April via BMG, her first for the label. ‘Golden’ is Kylie’s first studio album in four years and her fourteenth studio album in a record breaking career. e album was mainly recorded in Nashville, which was a first for Kylie, a fact which couldn’t help but inform the sound – albeit in Kylie’s superlative pop style. e album opens with lead single ‘Dancing’, which sets the tone for what is to come on the album. Kylie says: “You’ve got the lyrical edge, that Country feel, mixed with some sampling of the voice and electronic elements, so it does what it says on the label. And I love that it’s called ‘Dancing’, it’s immediately accessible and seemingly so obvious, but there’s depth within the song.”

Minogue. Her trip to Nashville involved working alongside two key writers, both with homes in the city. One was British-born songwriter Steve McEwan (whose credits include huge Country hits for Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney and Carrie Underwood), and the other was Amy Wadge, another Brit (best known for her mega-selling work with Ed Sheeran). Kylie Minogue will bring her extraordinary creativity as a live performer back to the stage this autumn when she plays a UK and Ireland tour. Kylie, who always raises the bar with her live performances, promises a brand new extravaganza for this production which will be centred around her new album 'Golden', although of course her amazing back catalogue will also be embraced.

is record is one of Kylie’s most personal date – with every song on ‘Golden’ co-written by Tickets are on general sale from 10am 02 March 2018 via www.theticketfactory.com or by calling 0844 33 88 222 *Calls cost 7p per minute plus your phone company's access charge. Anything goes…

Guide

Festival season is in full swing, and with it comes the inevitable flower headbands, frills, sparkles and wellington boots. You can literally go to town when it comes to festival fashion. Denim shorts are a must, as are bikini tops of every description, or even swimsuits; handy for when the rain starts! Remember to layer it up, as it can drop cool on the evenings - but most importantly, have fun with it.

e Essentials… A good pair of wellington boots is a must for festival goers, wading through mud in sandals is not a great look. An anorak with a hood is also something you would be mad to be without - you know it’s going to rain, right? You won’t want to carry a massive bag around with you, so a belt bag is a great way of keeping money, phones and other essentials safe without them getting in the way of enjoying yourself. Absolutely Potty... Plant pots come in all shapes, sizes and designs. The simple addition of some large plants around the house turns boring corners of living rooms and hallways into green lushiousness. An interesting pot is a great way of making a statement, I love this Cement Style Tall Planter £55. Another lovely idea is using a Paperweave Storage Basket - From £12 - a relatively cheap option.

Real house plants are great but artificial flowers and foliage have come along in leaps and bounds, so if like me you struggle to look after house plants you can still get the look without any plants being harmed! I like this succulent style tree in cement effect pot - £12. All from Next Home

Book Worms... A black country girl who loves to read. I have heard so many great things about this book and was lucky enough to receive a copy of NetGallery for an honest review.

Georgina Jefimik

woman isn’t sexually attracted to them and wants to be just be friends?

e story follows our protagonist Izzy, ‘an aspiring comic, an impoverished orphan, and a Slut Extraordinaire’. Well, that’s what the malicious website flying around the school is describing her as. After attending a party, Izzy sleeps with two guys in one night, one happens to be the senators son and pictures of her soon start making their way around the school. Izzy has never been ashamed of herself and she isn’t going to start now. However, when everyone has seen your nude pictures and is branding you a slut, it’s kind of hard to keep her head up. Izzy is an amazing narrator. She challenges expectations and is so comfortable with her own body and sexuality and it’s really refreshing to see. Also, she has sex and isn’t afraid to tell you she actually enjoys it! *gasps*. She also is a comedic genius, and this is shown through the hilarious and witty narrative. e book is portrayed as her diary, however the added touch of Izzy’s own voice makes it almost conversational. You feel like Izzy is right there telling you her story. I think what I liked most about her is how she was fierce and strong but also vulnerable which made her so relatable.

This book deals with a lot of sensitive subjects that can be quite triggering so readers should be warned. Not only does it deal with slut shaming, male entitlement, cyber bullying and revenge porn, it also deals with the outing of a queer character without their consent. I can’t begin to understand how that must feel, however what I do know is that it should always be someone’s choice, and that choice was taken away from them. I did however, have a few issues with the book. I find it incredible how much the whole story was blown out of proportion. I was confused by the media attention the story gathered and I think the explanation of the senators son being wasn’t enough for me. I also struggled to understand why the school didn’t act upon anything that was happening. Not once did a teacher call Izzy in to discuss what had happened and next steps to take. Also, it’s effectively ‘revenge porn’, so I don’t know why the person responsible got off so easily. I get that it isn’t necessarily illegal across all of America, but surely the school should have done so much more. Also, before I finish the review, can we have a special shout out to Izzy’s grandmother and her dog Dumbledore!

is story shows how double standards still exist and how women are treated so much differently to men. Why is Izzy treated so horribly after her nude pictures are leaked, yet no one bats an eyelid when a guy’s picture is? It also deals with male entitlement and how they think that by being nice to a woman and buying her gifts means they should be entitled to more. at is literally not how it works. Why is it that some men are so offended by the idea that a

Laura Steven is an amazing author and I am so excited to read more of her work. is is one of the most honest books I have ever read. It is funny, hilarious, frustrating, heart-breaking and just all around amazing. At times, it made me uncomfortable, but I think that’s a good thing. It touched upon issues that are so relevant in today’s society. I give this book four out of five stars and will be recommending it to all my friends and family.

Gardening by the eXperts

I set up my business in 2000 because I felt that people who cared about their gardens, would like professional help that doesn’t cost the earth. We are a team of landscape gardeners who have professional gardening knowledge and are hardworking, reliable and trustworthy. We can transform and maintain any garden, large or small and we are committed to helping you achieve the garden you want. For as long as I can remember I have been passionate about gardening. I have always felt a strong connection with the natural world. After 5 years training at Horticulture College I graduated and became a professional gardener and landscape designer. During my training I spent some time in Denmark working in large gardens and also worked in the Botanical Gardens next to my college in Kracow (Poland) - Peter Sobilo

I offer all aspects of gardening including: Garden tidy-ups and clearance work, Lawn mowing and care, edging, Trimming hedges to a high standard, Path and driveway clearance, Planting, Weed control, Rose pruning, Rejuvenation of overgrown shrubs and trees, Landscaping: garden design, border development, plant selection and planting.

Testimonial

My nearly an acre of garden was sadly neglected for the best part of the year. Where to start, I was very disheartened, then by recommendation I found Peter and Lucas who have given me my lovely garden back again. They have worked miracles, pruning, dividing, replanting and preparing the vegetable garden, so that once more I can enjoy my garden. No jobs has proved too difficult, they come promptly, work hard and have real knowledge of gardening which is key to their success. – Valerie (Neachly, Shifnal)

Stay Healthy... Ways to Avoid Common Hidden Health Risks

with Dr Hilary Jones Being in tune with our body and seeking help when we notice new symptoms is key to future-proofing our health and wellbeing, but some illnesses arise without necessarily producing any early symptoms at all! Conditions such as high blood pressure, glaucoma, diabetes and osteoporosis are amongst the more widely publicised conditions which can often develop without any symptoms initially, so we asked Dr Hilary Jones, GP & Health Broadcaster to share his top tips for recognising other hidden health risks we shouldn’t ignore!

2. MISSING OUT ON THE JOKES 1. HAVING A SWEET TOOTH We all know that feeling of needing a pick-me-up, often in the form of a chocolate biscuit at 3pm! Well researchers at Yale University1 have revealed that the dramatic fall in blood sugar which happens after eating sugary foods as a result of sudden insulin secretion in the body, can make us more likely to give-in to sweet cravings. However, relying on sugary treats to get through the day can be a sign of something more than just a sweet tooth! Sugar cravings and fatigue can indicate seasonal affective disorder, whilst tiredness with weight gain and an intolerance of cold weather could point to an underactive thyroid. Tip: Having a blood test will assess whether your thyroid is functioning as it should so make a visit to your GP if you’re worried and ask about ways to reduce sugar in your diet. In the meantime, opt for healthier alternatives to sugary snacks such as unsalted almonds which are packed with magnesium for a fast energy boost, or a banana which is brimming with B vitamins – great for longerlasting energy when you’re on the go.

Missing the punchline in one too many jokes and feeling like you’re not able to enjoy conversations and social situations like you used to is a common symptom of having a potential hidden hearing loss.Unlike our eye health, our hearing is something we can be guilty of ignoring, even though it’s crucial to our everyday enjoyment in life – not to mention our work, relationships and our ability to relax and enjoy music or our favourite TV program. Latest research2 shows that the longer we delay seeking help for a potential hearing problem, the harder it is to restore it with the help of a hearing aid. Furthermore, studies show that straining to hear in conversations forces the brain to work harder. Overtime, this extra effort can take its toll on the brain and hearing loss has been shown to increase a person’s risk of dementia by up to 2-5 times3. Tip: Hearing loss can’t always be prevented but going for regular hearing checks will ensure your hearing health is taken care of, as well as helping to safe guard your future cognitive health too. To book a free hearing test near you, visit your local Hidden Hearing or go to www.HiddenHearing.co.uk

3. FEELING THE BURN Acid reflux, also known as heartburn, is the most frequent cause of indigestion in the UK. Coffee, alcohol, chocolate, and fatty or spicy foods can all be triggers, but not many are aware that anxiety can also contribute to that painful burning feeling in your throat or chest. Not everyone experiences heartburn when they're stressed, but stress is known to affect the digestive process, so it’s possible that anxiety is causing your body to digest foods poorly, leading to acid build-up. Overtime acid reflux can lead to hoarseness and a chronic cough so it’s important seek Tip: e best way to eliminate anxiety-related heartburn is to recognise what’s causing your anxiety in the first place. Reducing your stress levels through exercise, relaxation, and therapy can help to ease the symptoms. Eat little and often and remember that spicy and acidic foods can compound the problem so it’s best to eliminate them. Always seek help if reflux lasts more than 3 weeks, especially if you’re over 50.

4. HITTING THE SNOOZE BUTTON For many of us, forcing ourselves out of bed in the morning can be the biggest struggle of the day. Whether your bed is just too comfy, you’re tired, or you just don’t want to go to work, it’s a feeling that we all get from time to time. But feeling unable to get out of bed can be a sign of something more serious. If you’re feeling tired all the time, have trouble sleeping and struggle with low energy then you could be one of the millions of people who are depressed or deficient in a crucial mineral... iron! Iron helps make red blood cells which transport oxygen around the body, and without them we can be left feeling like we’re constantly tired. Looking ‘pale and interesting’ is another sign of iron deficiency, along with feeling short of breath and being aware of your heart beating faster than usual. Tip: One of the easiest ways to up your stamina is to increase your intake of foods rich in haem iron, such as red meat (up to 500g a week). Drinking fruit juice with your red meat will also help your body to absorb the iron thanks to the vitamin C. If red meat isn’t for you, having a side of green leafy veg with your meal is a great way to incorporate more iron-rich foods, along with shellfish such as mussels and oysters!

5. WALKING IS A PAIN As we get older our risk of having high levels of the LDL, known as ‘bad cholesterol’ increases our risk of heart disease, yet many people aren’t aware they have it. Symptoms like white spots around your eyelids, a white ring around the iris or even pain when walking due to poor circulation, could indicate high cholesterol levels4. So what causes it? Many things can affect cholesterol levels, including the foods you eat, not exercising enough, if your family members have or had high cholesterol, and your age of course as cholesterol naturally starts to rise after the age of 20. Tip: Know your numbers by getting a cholesterol test done every 5 years5. If your cholesterol is higher than it should be, there are things you can do. Create a more heart-healthy lifestyle by upping your activity levels and creating new habits, for instance, instead of having dessert, take a short walk, and reducing your intake of saturated fat by choosing leaner cuts of meat and low-fat dairy products. Also - try upping your intake of beta-glucans, a type of soluble fibre found in porridge which is proven to have a cholesterol lowering effect.

Stay Healthy...

SWIMMING... Water washes sunscreen off, and the cooling effect of the water can make you think you're not getting burned. Water also reflects ultraviolet (UV) rays, increasing your exposure. Water-resistant sunscreen is needed if sweating or contact with water is likely. Sunscreen should be reapplied straight after you've been in water – even if it's "water resistant" – and after towel drying, sweating, or when it may have rubbed off.

PROTECT YOUR EYES... A day at the beach without proper eye protection can cause a temporary but painful burn to the surface of the eye, similar to sunburn. Reflected sunlight from snow, sand, concrete and water, and artificial light from sunbeds, is particularly dangerous. Avoid looking directly at the sun, as this can cause permanent eye damage.

Sunscreen & Sun Safety... Sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer. Sunburn doesn't just happen on holiday – you can burn in the UK, even when it's cloudy. ere's not really a safe or healthy way to get a tan, and it is a myth that having a tan will help in any way to protect your skin from the sun's harmful effects. It is important to try to strike a balance between protecting yourself from the sun and getting the right amount of vitamin D from sunlight. Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, and in the UK most people can make enough vitamin D from being out in the sun daily for short periods with their forearms, hands or lower legs uncovered and without sunscreen from late March or early April to the end of September, especially from 11am to 3pm.

74

Feature | Sun Health

It's not known exactly how much time is needed in the sun to make enough vitamin D to meet the body's requirements. is is because there are a number of factors that can affect how vitamin D is made, such as your skin colour or how much skin you have exposed. But you should be careful not to burn in the sun, so take care to cover up, or protect your skin with sunscreen, before your skin starts to turn red or burn.

Make sure you: • Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm • Make sure you never burn • Cover up with suitable clothing and sunglasses • Take extra care with children • Use at least factor 15 sunscreen visit www.nhs.uk for more sun safety tips.

CHILDREN AND SUN PROTECTION... Take extra care to protect babies and children. eir skin is much more sensitive than adult skin, and damage caused by repeated exposure to sunlight could lead to skin cancer developing in later life. Apply sunscreen to areas not protected by clothing, such as the face, ears, feet, and backs of hands. To ensure they get enough vitamin D, all children under five are advised to take vitamin D supplements.

DEALING WITH SUNBURN... Sponge sore skin with cool water, then apply soothing aftersun or calamine lotion. Painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, will ease the pain by helping to reduce inflammation caused by sunburn. Seek medical help if you feel unwell or the skin swells badly or blisters. Stay out of the sun until all signs of redness have gone.

Beauty Made For Summer Days...

e Beauty Grapevine

SUMMER SUN AT NEXT... Rich and fruity, Summer Sun captures the feeling of travel; walking barefoot on white sands with the rich aroma of creamy coconut rolling off the rippling tide. A sun-drenched blend of sweet caramel and amber combined with sun-hot skin creates an endless summer scent. In short, it is the beach in a bottle - £14 (100ml).

Beauty Tips For Summer... ere are some beauty looks that remain from season to season like bold lip colours and winged eyeliners, but others that won’t cross over from winter to summer. Warmer weather brings different problems like sun burn, sweating or occasional dips in the pool on holiday. No-makeup makeup is the ultimate summer look. Start things off with a good moisturiser as you shouldn’t leave your skin unprotected without a barrier against environmental attackers like pollution and bacteria. Use something with a little added SPF to help prevent sunburn too. If you do get caught by the sun Aloe is a known anti-inflammatory, offering moisturizing relief, as well as containing antioxidants that can help repair damaged skin and prevent free radicals from doing their worst. Vaseline Intensive Care offers

a great body lotion infused with aloe that rehydrates and calms your skin, helping to undo damage as well as prevent future issues. Lip stains are great for summer as they are light, long lasting and come in really pretty eye-catching shades - YSL is one of my favourites, lasting up to 10 hours!

BEACH HAIR One great tip for your hair, is to keep it wet. Before you go into the sea or the pool, give it a good soaking - this saturates the cuticle with water so less chemicals are absorbed, which will help minimise the damage to the integrity of the hair. Use a UV ray protective spray, like Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil (100ml) £19.10 from fabled.com, it is a lightweight, water resistant UV defense mist that forms an invisible screen that will protect hair for up to 16 hours, and helps minimize colour fadage, damage and dryness.

TOTALLY TROPICAL... ese fun, bright colours are totally tropical and perfect for summer, with Mineral Glow Baked Blusher, set of 4 Matte Lipsticks, an eye popping Eye Shadow Pallette and shimmering Eye Liner Pencils - all from PS... at Primark. ey also have the ‘Heatwave Lip Kit’ at just £3.50, matte liquid lipstick & duo lip liner - it looks great and lasts all day!

FACTS AT A GLANCE

Model: Kia Sorento 2.2 CRDi 'GT-Line S' Auto AWD Price: £41,995

Engine: 2.2 turbo diesel Top Speed: 130 mph Average fuel consumption: 40mpg Pictures: Kia.co.uk

as I shrinking? Was I getting smaller? I checked my reflection in the hall mirror. I looked the same. Or did I? Later that morning I took off to the local branch of Shirts 'R Us for a fitting. I was in the mood for a snappy pinstripe. The pleasant gentleman with a tape measure told me the truth. I was definitely not shrinking. Quite the reverse. So whatever gave me that idea?

W

Trotting out to the car park I blinked away an April shower and beheld a treat for sore eyes. A magnificent-looking car. The strains of mandolin music and Dean Martin's smooth baritone seemed to fill my ears. I was ready, willing and able to be caroused in comfort by the third generation, sportierlooking Kia Sorento: an embodiment of everything one could wish for. A seven seat SUV. Here is sunshine and sweet-smelling flowers; here is wisdom, gravity and concern; here is beauty; here is practicality, comfort and economy. Then it dawned on me. I wasn't getting smaller. It was simply that cars are getting bigger. And better I hasten to add. The evidence was right there before my very eyes in the eye-candy elegance of the Kia Sorento. Let me be frank. A car like this is not everyones cup of

78

tea. Not everyone needs a seven-seater equipped with a boot the size of Fingal's Cave, powered by a 2.2 turbo diesel pumping out near 200bhp and capable of taking you to near 130mph. Nor do they need one able to tow a Thames barge or two laden with sea coal across dry land in search of an open fire - and yet return an average of over 40mpg.(This eight speed automatic Sorento with five different drive modes and the Dynamax intelligent 4WD system with manually selectable lock mode, has a 2000kg max tow weight). Neither do they need one equal to the task of transporting The Temperance Seven with all their kit, plus a Party Seven can of Watney's Red Barrel all the way to Inverness for a knees up with the natives. No - some folk will prefer a Trabant. Take Oliver Fotheringham. He is the owner of Planchon Manor: or would be if it hadn't been flattened by developers to build affordable homes. Now dwelling in a trailer park near Weston-Super-Mare, he keeps badgering me for a visit. Heading south on the M5 and reflecting on the strange observations that the mainland appears to slope downwards from north to south and wondering at the same time if this was indeed the case or simply an effect of the Sorento's effortless motoring (perhaps elements of both) I was curious to see how Oliver was getting on.

It was a relaxing drive. A large cabin exuded the airiness associated with open moorland and big skies, encouraging a mood of comfortable alertness - as of an expert gamekeeper surveying the estate in his charge. Seldom have I experienced such a prodigious amalgam of automotive ambiance, driving position, controls, visibility and aural enhancement (courtesy of superb ICE equipment). Together this made for complete reassurance, endorsed and amplified through exemplary road manners. Here was a big car at home on the road and here was little me at home in the Kia. My ego continued to expand. Could this continue or should I visit my shrink? But who needs a psychotherapist with someone like Oliver Fotheringham to greet you at the gate? Picture not so much a silver fox but a pewter miserable exuding hippopotamus exasperation. He blinked and peered through the windscreen as though doubting that yours truly would be in something so impressive. The gate which he clung to in the manner of someone about to shut out trouble opened onto a narrow drive. Oliver took his place beside me and gave directions: but not before he had a good look around.

"What's this?" I told him. "A bit big and grand for you old chap" He said."There's one thing it isn't" I responded, "And that's dear. You could have one for £41,995- and there's a seven year warranty! Think about it. By the way, do you still have the Trabant?" Turning the corner my question was answered. There, painted in a shade of faded turquoise and peppered with hits from seagulls was the very car next to his palatially appointed park home. 'Ah well' I reflected later on my way home 'each to his own'. I patted the steering wheel. 'Take me back Kia Sorento to the land of quality and taste'.

Fully Charged. Jaguar’s All Electric I-Pace...

J

aguar’s first all-electric production vehicle, the IPACE, was unveiled to the world in March by live broadcast.

British comedian and actor, Jack Whitehall, self-proclaimed EV enthusiast and TV presenter Jonny Smith and American tech guru iJustine, hosted a special live show as the first I-PACE rolled off the production line in March at Plant Graz, Austria, one of the world’s most advanced EV production facilities, where the car will be built.

When it came to explaining the technology behind I-PACE, host comedian Jack Whitehall enlisted the help of Jaguar’s newest vehicle experts, nine year olds Lola and Hudson.

Ahead of the FIA Formula E race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez E-Prix circuit in Mexico City, the Jaguar I-PACE was pitted against both the Tesla Model X 75D and 100D in a 0mph-60mph-0mph head-to-head challenge. Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Mitch Evans got behind the wheel to showcase the acceleration and braking power of Jaguar’s first EV against the Tesla models, driven by

Jaguar I-PACE

former IndyCar Series champion Tony Kanaan. The I-PACE has a state-of-the-art 90kWh Lithium-ion battery and offers sports car performance of 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds alongside the practicality of a 480km range (WLTP cycle) and 0-80 per cent charging time of 40 minutes (100kW DC). Allied with its concept car looks and next-generation artificial intelligence, it is set to be the perfect everyday EV consumers have been waiting for. ‘Fully Charged’ the documentary aired at the end of the broadcast, giving a behind-thescenes insight into the creators and makers of I-PACE.

Designed and engineered in the UK, the I-PACE will be built in Plant Graz, Austria, as part of Jaguar Land Rover’s manufacturing partnership with Magna Steyr. It joins Jaguar’s growing family of SUVs, alongside the all-new E-PACE and multiple award-winning F-PACE.

I-PACE received its public debut at Geneva Motor Show on 6th March. I-PACE is on sale now from £63,495 in the UK. In addition to S, SE and HSE derivatives, there will also be a limited number of First Edition I-PACE models available. Configure yours at www.jaguar.com

Palm Springs Decor...

Desert Boho Home

popularity; potentially as it marries so well with the rustic, desert terrain.

To get a hook on this hot interior trend, start with a statement piece, such as Cult Furniture’s new Cult Living Penelope Accent Chair in Green Leaf. Both modern and retro, this stand-out chair offers notes of glamour, luxury and modern design. Inspired by mid-century modern designs, the Penelope cocktail chair has velvet upholstery, wing back seat and classic button detailing. The option of Green Leaf upholstery, puts the ‘palm’ firmly in your Palm Springs interior.

Heat up your style with Palm Springs inspired desert décor.

You don’t have to endure blistering heat to enjoy the warmth of a desert home. Desert modern style, as typified around Palm Springs, has taken the decorating world by sandstorm and Cult Furniture have plenty of inspiration to help you capture this iconic look.

Stemming from the incredible popularity of desert-based music festivals like Coachella, both fashion and interior design have warmed to this laid-back aesthetic that mixes modernism with a free-spirited, bohemian vibe. The desert landscape in and around Palm Springs is composed an assortment of modernism, indigenous heritage, and distinctive vegetation. This unique combination is best described as bohemian or eclectic, but it’s the mid-

century modern aspects that give it the design-focused edge. The modernism style was prevalent among the artists and filmmakers that made Palm Springs their home in the 50s and 60s; and, after a brief lull in the 70s and 80s, it bounced back into

Home Trends

Add some rustic authenticity with the Cult Living Olympia Live Edge Coffee Table. Crafted with a slab of reclaimed wood that looks like a slice taken from a tree, this modern accent table is finished off with hairpin legs on the bottom and shows off a high-quality grain, creating a study in contrasts. Accentuated wood grain adds depth and interest to a white and mutedtoned desert chic space, so a raw wooden table, such as the Olympia, makes for the perfect centrepiece in your boho desertinspired paradise.

Details complete the look, so look out for iconic emblems to accent your scheme. The Cult Home Decorative Stoneware Palm Tree in Gold is an easy way to embellish a coffee table or dresser. A little bit novelty and very much stylish, it will add an exotic effect to side tables. Place alongside gold vases, trays and quirky lamps to set off the statement piece with a playful twist.

Texture plays a big part in piecing together a boho look, so opt for woven where

Home Trends

possible. The Cult Home Small Seagrass Woven Basket in White, is perfect for storing your favourite plants or placing in hallway. Whether it’s for outdoor storage or indoor storage uses, this will bring a versatile touch thanks to the top handles, flexible and durable material. The muted palette of this basket contrasts well with the raw woods, leathers and rich colours of the Palm Springs aesthetic.

If you wish to throw in a curveball to offset the desert heat, go for a dreamy marble accessory, such as the Cult Home Marble Effect Cylinder Vase in Grey. This grey marble cylinder vase is the perfect centrepiece for a coffee table, and will really pop against your warm woods and leathers.

The desert chic look is all about playing up natural materials, and the Cult Living Wickham Industrial 2 Seater Small Sofa, Faux Leather Seat in Brown effortlessly masquerades as another natural element. Catering to those who like their furniture with an industrial feel, this Wickham wood and metal two seater sofa, upholstered in brown faux leather, will make every living room comfortable. The design is inspired by the iconic 60s Robin Day

Chevron Chair and adapted to suit the modern home. A contemporary, cool take on the accent chair, this small couch comes with padded arms and a trendy ridged design you won't want to get up from.
