Hello Issue 49 - May & June 2021 Edition We are all looking forward with hope to 21st June, and the possible end of social restrictions. But will life return to normal? Hopefully the roadmap out of lockdown continues to be pothole free, and not too bumpy a journey along the way. We just have to keep being careful, and hope that the great work of the NHS on the vaccine rollout continues to go to plan. I am excited at the reopening of shops, gyms, leisure centres and of course bars & restaurants. I have even booked a table for my 50th Birthday this year - fingers crossed, as I am really looking forward to a steak, and a cocktail! It is also great to see the plans coming together for some events across Shropshire, w (all being well!), and the return of some dates at the theatre. The last year has really highlighted the importance of these things, and our need to connect with one-another. The local area has been explored more over the last 12 months, and this is something that I am keen to continue doing. We have some fabulous parks and beautiful areas of natural beauty. If you haven’t visited any of these, you really should! We also have some great shops in our High Streets, with a range of independent shops and businesses, which have been great over the last 12 months - so it is vitally important that we continue to shop local and support them. Not only do you get great quality produce, but you also get good customer service and it helps to protect local jobs. Keep checking out Shropshire Council’s website for new and updates of what’s going on in the local area. It is also useful for checking how things are going on the roadmap to freedom. Whatever happens, summer is nearly here - and that’s always good news!!!

Grace & May Home Edit_Full Page Bleed New 16/04/2021 16:28 Page 1
At the start of lockdown in 2020, two sisters decided to start their own business, combining their own buying and administrative skills, after becoming frustrated by a lack of British made products that actively reduced their own impact on the environment. Grace & May Home launched in May 2020 and the business has seen steady growth since then. The women behind the brand, Wendy and Sarah Lees, originally hail from Shrewsbury and are proud to share the idea that it is possible to have a beautiful home whilst supporting British business, something that they are very passionate about. The online shop stocks a range of beauty, gifts, homeware, stationery, plastic free and vegan products all designed, produced and manufactured by artisan suppliers from the UK. “Britain has an incredible range of designers, manufacturers and small businesses right here that we need to tap into. There is no need for eco-friendly products to be shipped from the other side of the world. We want to find the most practical and sustainable items here at home” says Sarah. Wendy whole-heartedly agrees “We are two normal people who want to inspire others that it is possible to make just a
few small changes at home. All the products that we stock, we do actually use ourselves too.” In the last year, Grace & May Home have already been nominated for Best New Business at the Women’s Business Awards 2020 and were hand-picked by Theo Pathitis as one of his Small Business Sunday winners in February 2021. This recognition has spurred Wendy and Sarah on to keep pushing the business further. Plans are already in place to create and design their own range of sustainable beauty products and a candle range inspired by their own childhood memories. They also have a number of pop-up shops planned for this year starting in May and the duo are looking forward to showcasing their beautiful products. Visit the website online at www.graceandmayhome.co.uk to browse the full range and sign up to their monthly newsletter. You can also find them on social media; Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @graceandmayhome.

Coronavirus: eatre Severn to receive over £500,000 from Culture Recovery Fund
Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury has received a grant of £532,978 from the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund to help the organisation recover and reopen.
LOCAL NEWS Coronavirus: eatre Severn to receive over £500,000 from Culture Recovery Fund... Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury has received a grant of £532,978 from the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund to help the organisation recover and reopen. More than £300 million has been awarded to thousands of cultural organisations across the country including Theatre Severn in the latest round of support from the Culture Recovery Fund. The grant will support Theatre Severn during a period of recovery in the months ahead, and will enable the venue to pursue plans for an exciting summer season of events for all ages, including outdoor events at Shrewsbury Castle and participatory activities for children and young people. In line with the Government’s roadmap, Theatre Severn currently plans to reopen from the earliest Monday 17 May 2021, initially with a programme of film screenings and selected live events where appropriate social distancing and reduced capacities will be in operation until restrictions can be lifted further. Over £800 million in grants and loans has already been awarded to support almost 3,800 cinemas, performance venues, museums, heritage sites and other cultural organisations dealing with the immediate challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. The second round of awards made today will help organisations to look ahead to the spring and summer and plan for reopening and recovery. After months of closures and cancellations to contain the virus and save lives, this funding will be a much-needed helping hand for organisations transitioning back to normal in the months ahead. Mark Barrow, Shropshire Council’s executive director of place and enterprise, said:-
“We’re thrilled to receive funding from the Culture Recovery Fund. Staff at Theatre Severn have worked tremendously hard to find new ways to bring the theatre to audiences and to bolster the pandemic support effort in the county, with the venue recently becoming a walk-in rapid Lateral Flow Tests centre.
“Despite best efforts, theatres and the wider cultural sector, like so many others, have been hugely impacted by the pandemic and have had revenue streams slashed. We are incredibly grateful in receiving grant funding to support the recovery of Theatre Severn, and to enable us to explore an exciting programme of events for people of all ages in the months ahead and give everyone something positive to look forward to.”
Sir Nicholas Serota, Chair, Arts Council England, said:-
“Investing in a thriving cultural sector at the heart of communities is a vital part of helping the whole country to recover from the pandemic. These grants will help to reopen theatres, concert halls and museums, and will give artists and companies the opportunity to begin making new work. We are grateful to the Government for this support and for recognising the paramount importance of culture to our sense of belonging and identity as individuals and as a society.”
The funding awarded today is from a £400 million pot which was held back last year to ensure the Culture Recovery Fund could continue to help organisations in need as the public health picture changed. The funding has been awarded by Arts Council England, as well as Historic England and National Lottery Heritage Fund and the British Film Institute.

How to spot
Spring Wildlife... Bees are buzzing, flowers are blooming, and the sun is shining: Spring is finally here! With Spring comes a burst of wonderful wildlife to be spotted. From butterflies to badgers, wild garlic to woodpeckers, there are so many things to look out for! What wildlife can you spot this time of year? Well, we’ve been in touch with Butterfly Conservation, and they have kindly given us a picture guide as to what butterflies and moths you can expect to see in May.

Butterfly Conservation is a wonderful organisation, aiming to recover threatened species of moths and butterflies, increase numbers of widespread species, promote international conservation actions, and inspire people to understand and take part in conservation.
Gardens provide them with plenty of food and potential nesting sites. Hedgehogs like to eat creepy crawlies, however during dry periods these can become sparse. You can create a small home and supplement food for hedgehogs in your garden. A shallow dish of water will benefit them hugely and even meat-based dog or cat food can be left out for them. Springwatch suggests that logs, leaves, twigs and natural garden compost make an ideal home for these small creatures (and bumblebees too), if you keep a pile in your garden – visitors may start to appear!

Alzheimer's Society’s Cupcake Day
Top Tips! Former Great British Bake off contestant Michael Chakraverty spills the tea on how to create the tastiest treats for
Podcaster, writer, and former 2019 Great British Bake Off contestant Michael Chakraverty has revealed his top tips to perfecting those oh so delicious treats, all in aid of supporting Alzheimer’s Society’s Cupcake Day on Thursday 17th June. Although 2020 saw a rise in baking, it also saw one of the worst years for people affected by dementia. Over a quarter of all Covid-19 deaths in the UK were people living with dementia , thousands have faced an increase in symptoms and mental health decline and it’s been a heart-breaking time for families, who have either been cut off from loved ones or facing a lack of respite from caring duties. As an active Dementia Friends Champion Michael, who has first-hand experience of having a family member living with dementia, knows just how much of a difference your donations can make, which is why he is sharing all we need to know to achieve those star baker quality bakes! An Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends Champion runs Dementia Friends' information sessions, helping to tackle the stigma and lack of understanding about dementia that means many people with the condition experience loneliness and isolation. There are currently over three million Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends in the UK. Using Michael’s tricks of the trade will mean anyone and everyone can get involved in Alzheimer’s Society’s Cupcake Day whether you’re a piping queen or baking newbie. You could organise a delivery ‘drop off’ of goodies to your neighbours, host a driveway bake sale in your area or have a virtual ‘bake-off’ with colleagues, friends, and family however you like to do it, you will be raising vital funds in support of people affected by dementia.
Michael’s baking top tips:
• Cure to curdling: A really easy way to prevent curdling is to ensure that all your ingredients are the same temperature - this means that they'll combine a lot more easily. I tend to leave all the ingredients on a countertop overnight before baking in the morning so that I can be sure they're at the right temperature. Make sure you add your eggs one by one, beating them to combine fully before adding the next - and if it curdles, just add a little bit of flour which will bring it back together. And if all else fails, just don't worry too much - it'll probably sort itself out in the oven!
• Miracle meringues: To achieve the perfect meringue don't over-beat it! Start whisking lightly, or on a low speed, until bubbles form, before increasing the speed gradually. Once you've got to the 'soft peaks' stage (where the mixture is white and frothy, and when you remove the whisk it folds over onto itself but maintains its shape) you can add a dash of lemon juice or a pinch of cream of tartar to stabilise it, before whipping to stiff peaks (when you remove the whisk it stands to attention!). Always bake meringues low and slow!
• Sugar secrets: Sugars can generally be substituted for one another - the main difference between light brown sugar and white sugars is that light brown sugar lends a caramel-like taste to the bake, and brown sugar can also make the bake's crust a deeper/darker colour. The one exception to this rule is icing sugar, which is in a league of its own - but if you happen to have a spice grinder handy, you can always whizz some white sugar down to a powder! • Baking or Bicarbonate: With Baking Powder and Bicarbonate of Soda, you can't substitute one for the other! Bicarbonate of soda (or in American recipes, baking soda), is an alkali - meaning that it needs to react with an acid within the recipe (lemon juice, vinegar, sour cream etc) whereas baking powder contains both an alkali and an acid - which activates when mixed with other ingredients. If you are really struggling and don't have baking powder, I'd suggest adding a third of the amount of baking powder as bicarbonate of soda, and add a good pinch of cream of tartar. Then cross your fingers.
• Decorative designs: For simple but effective decorating, buy a piping bag! It looks a lot more intimidating than it is and piped buttercream looks SO much more professional! If you're really worried, a glace icing always looks good too (just mix icing sugar with a little water) with sprinkles on top!
• Fruity fun: You can replace fresh fruit with frozen. Frozen fruit actually retains its shape better within bakes - though it does lower the temperature of the bake slightly so you may need to lengthen the baking time slightly. I always coat my frozen fruit with a bit of flour to prevent it sinking in the bake - the flour 'grabs' the mixture and holds the fruit in place!
Money raised will go towards Alzheimer’s Society’s vital support services, like its Dementia Connect support line. Our services have been used over 3.6 million times since March 2020 and have been a lifeline to thousands, but there are so many more who urgently need help.
Michael Chakraverty said:
“It has been heart-breaking to hear about the devastating impact the pandemic has had on people affected by dementia. Being the worst hit in terms of deaths, cut off from loved ones and struggling without any social interaction for so long, it’s never been more important to fundraise for such an amazing charity. I always knew baking can bring people together but this past year especially, knowing your baking can make a difference to someone does make it that bit sweeter. I’m calling for as many people as possible to get in the kitchen then get out delivering your baked goods and start raising money on June 17th for this important cause.” To sign up and find out more please visit www.alzheimers.org.uk/cupcake-day

Exotic Pets on the rise
in Shropshire...
are you living next door to some of the world’s deadliest creatures?
A new survey conducted by Born Free has revealed that nearly 4,000 dangerous wild animals are being privately kept in Great Britain – 94 of which are living in Shropshire. The international wildlife charity is calling on the UK Government to immediately review the law and put a stop to some of the world’s most remarkable, but often deadly, creatures being kept as ‘pets’ in unsuitable captive conditions. Born Free’s research reviewed the number of Dangerous Wild Animal (DWA) Act licences granted by local authorities in 2020 across England, Scotland and Wales, and the variety of species being privately kept. Local authorities in Shropshire revealed that the licences granted cover 94 dangerous wild animals residing in the area, of which there are at least: • 70 Wild boar • 6 Wolves • 3 Zebras • 5 cats including Savannah cats, Ocelots, and a Serval • 2 Camels • 5 scorpions including an Arizona bark scorpion, a Red scorpion, and Fattailed scorpions • 3 spiders including Phoneutria spiders, and a Chilean recluse
20
Shockingly, the entire combined data across all authorities highlighted that a total of 210 DWA licences were granted for the keeping of 3,951 individual wild animals including:
Exotic Pets_Double Page Editorial 09/03/2021 14:26 Page 2
• 320 wild cats (including 61 big cats – 11 lions, 8 tigers, 11 leopards, 18 pumas, 10 cheetahs, 2 ligers and 1 jaguar) • 274 primates (including over 150 lemurs) • 158 crocodilians • 508 venomous snakes (including 57 diamondback rattlesnakes) • 332 scorpions • 106 venomous lizards • 2 elephants Other species on the DWA list that are being kept as pets or in private collections in the UK include zebras, camels, fossa (a kind of civet), hyaena, sun bears, wolves, and otters. Dr Mark Jones, Veterinarian and Born Free’s Head of Policy, states: “Born Free has been collating and analysing DWA data for over 20 years. Since the millennium the wild animal welfare and conservation charity has seen a dramatic increase in the number of exotic pets in private ownership, including a 94% increase in the number of venomous snakes, 57% increase in wild cats, 198% increase in crocodilians and over a 2000% increase in scorpions. However, these figures are likely to represent only the tip of the iceberg. They only record those animals being kept and registered with a DWA licence. Born Free believes that many additional dangerous wild animals are being kept without a licence.” Currently, under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976, anyone in Britain can keep a dangerous wild animal as long as they obtain a licence from their Local Authority. The licencing process requires the applicant to demonstrate that their animals are properly contained so as to prevent escape and protect the public, but this does little to ensure the welfare of the animals or the protection of the owner or anyone else visiting the property. While changes have been made to the schedule, Born Free is highlighting the fact that the Act itself has not been reviewed
substantially for more than 40 years. This means, for example, that species such as Komodo dragons, other large monitors, and large constrictor snakes are not included on the schedule, despite the fact that they could pose a serious risk to their owners, and to members of the public, should they escape. Furthermore, there is long-standing concern about widespread non-compliance with the Act, especially with respect to venomous reptiles and invertebrates. Dr Mark Jones commented: “It is unbelievable that, in this day and age, so many dangerous animals, including big cats, large primates, crocodiles and venomous snakes, are in private ownership in the UK. Increasing demand for all kinds of wild animals as exotic pets puts owners and the wider public at risk of injury or disease. It also results in serious animal suffering, and the demand increases the pressure on many wild populations which are often already under threat.” Just last year a hybrid Savannah cat escaped in Hampstead, London, while a seven-foot-long Boa constrictor appeared in someone’s back garden and then turned on its rescuer biting his hand and wrapping itself around his wrist on the Isle of Sheppey. There have been other horror stories where a woman was bitten in the eye by a python at Mayfair club and almost blinded, while a man in Hampshire was killed by his 8ft African rock python. These are just a handful of cases that have been reported. In fact, records held by the RSPCA report that their specially-trained exotics officers rescued over 4,000 exotic animals in 2018 alone. Due to the nature of the animals, most owners fail to report escapes or attacks for fear of the animal being removed or their licence revoked. Mark continued: “The UK likes to claim to be at the forefront of efforts to protect nature and improve the welfare of animals, yet our legislation governing the keeping of and trade in exotic pets is woefully outdated. While the Government’s recent
proposal to ban the keeping of and trade in primates as pets is a welcome first step, there are many other species that need to be protected from this form of exploitation. The Dangerous Wild Animals Act should be overhauled as a matter of urgency, in order to phase-out the private keeping of and trade in those species that clearly don’t belong in people’s homes.” To find out what dangerous animals are living in other counties across the UK you can use Born Free’s interactive map on their website www.bornfree.org.uk/dwamap. A new ITV documentary on dangerous wild animals in the UK is coming soon.
Born Free seeks to have a positive impact on animals in the wild and protect their ecosystems in perpetuity, for their own intrinsic value and for the critical roles they play within the natural world. For more information about Born Free please visit: www.bornfree.org.uk 21

Autism Spectrum
DISORDER:
Understanding why autism is a disorder and not a disability... March 29 – 2 April 2021 was World Autism Awareness Week. Understanding Autism and getting the right help and support has come a long way in recent years, but we still have a lot more work to do so we can understand this condition better. High profile celebrities such as Katie Price, Sylvester Stallone, and Jenny McCarthy, to name a few, have helped to de-mystify raising a child who is on the Autistic Disorder Spectrum. It is estimated that 1 in 100 children are autistic and if they do not receive the right support their childhood experience can be a challenging one. Need2Know Books explores the signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD. If you would like to learn more about Autism Spectrum Disorder Need2Know Books is giving a 50% discount off Autism the Essential Guide and The Essential Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome to help provide further clarity and understanding. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder characterised by behavioural and communicational responses that impact a person’s ability to navigate social interactions and causes repetitive and restricted behaviour. All autism diagnoses are now officially titled ASD and include conditions such as Autism Disorder and Asperger’s Syndrome. Although the way we define autism has changed over the years we have moved away from understanding autism as a disability caused by ‘bad parenting’ or ‘mental illness’ to one that exists as a continuous spectrum of conditions. Due to on-going research and highprofile celebrities speaking out and sharing their experiences, parents are now in a better position to find educational resources to get the right support they need. There is still, however, a lot of work to do to fully understand the condition.
22
Autism Spectrum_Double Page Editorial 23/02/2021 11:17 Page 2
However, when establishing a diagnosis for a child or adult the following traits are required... Katie Price has openly shared details about Harvey, her eldest child, and their journey together and actively encourages other celebrities to share their experiences. In a recent interview she said: "There are other celebrities with kids with autism and stuff, but you don’t really hear about it… there’s a lot of kids with disabilities and they hide away and don’t want to be seen out and don’t like people staring. "But I’d like to be an ambassador with Harvey to show this and how good it is - it’s not a bad thing to have disabilities and hopefully people can learn.” Katie’s son Harvey was born partially blind with a rare genetic condition called Prader-Willi Syndrome. He is also on the autistic Spectrum. In 1982 Sylvester Stallone appeared on the cover of People Magazine with his son Seargeoh and revealed that his second born son had been diagnosed with autism at age three. In an interview Stallone warmly said: “There is no real father-and-son thing there I have to become his playmate. With a child like this you have to put away your ego. You can’t force him into your world. “I sort of go along with whatever he is doing. Sometimes he likes to draw, mostly abstract things, and he has puzzles that we work on together. After he gets to the point where he trusts you, a little more communication can start. The primary therapy is the repetition of words and instructions. He has shown an extraordinary memory, but he can’t apply what he has learned." When we listen to parents who have children on the autistic spectrum it becomes clear that each parent’s experience can be very different. Like all children, autistic children have their own strengths and weaknesses. So, understanding each experience in one particular way is not helpful.
Social communication
• Autistic people have difficulties with interpreting both verbal and nonverbal language like gestures or tone of voice. • Some autistic people are unable to speak or have limited speech while other autistic people have very good language skills but struggle to understand sarcasm or tone of voice.
Social Interaction
• Autistic people often have difficulty 'reading' other people - recognising or understanding others' feelings and intentions - and expressing their own emotions. • They can also appear to be insensitive • seek out time alone when overloaded by other people • not seek comfort from other people • appear to behave 'strangely' or in a way thought to be socially inappropriate
• These can change over time or be lifelong. Autistic people can become experts in their special interests and often like to share their knowledge.
Meltdowns and Shutdowns
• When everything becomes too much for an autistic person, they can go into meltdown or shutdown. These are very intense and exhausting experiences. The definition of autism has changed over the decades and it could change in future years as we understand more. Society no longer sees autistic children or people suffering from a disability with no future. Now we understand autism as a disorder that simply makes some children and people different.
• find it hard to form friendships.
Repetitive and Restrictive Behaviour
• Autistic children and adults like routines. They may want to travel the same way to and from school or work, wear the same clothes or eat exactly the same food for breakfast. • Change to routine can also be very distressing for autistic people and make them very anxious.
Highly Focused Interests or Hobbies
• Many autistic children and adults have intense and highly focused interests, often from a fairly young age.

e Year We Became Teachers... My Tutor celebrates the parents of Britain as they hand their kids back to the professionals. How do we think we fared as a nation of home tutors? Unique study from MyTutor reveals parents' home-schooling sentiments as children head back to the classroom. 44% of parents admit that home tutoring did not come naturally to them, but it has been the most rewarding task they've ever taken on. 54% of parents said that they found home-schooling more challenging than working from home. As children don uniforms, pack pencil cases and return to school, parents all around the nation breathe a sigh of relief. After a year of academic disruption, parents have sacrificed their routines, lunch times and coffee breaks to support their children's education as best as they could. With 44% of parents agreeing that home tutoring did not come easily to them yet was one of the most rewarding experiences to date, leading Ed Tech platform MyTutor celebrates those who took up a part-time (and often full-time) role in teaching this year. Tradespeople, office workers, key workers and zero-hour-contractors have all been in the same boat as the immense pressures of home-schooling through a pandemic have mounted this past year. In fact, 54% of parents understandably found home-schooling even more challenging than their day job as they've had to re-learn long division, chemistry formulas and whole curriculums that they wouldn't have spared a second thought for since leaving secondary school decades ago. With 42% of parents having to support their multiple children of different age groups, all crowded round the kitchen table with limited screens, the nation deserves recognition for its incredible, tireless efforts. Key statistics
• 54% of parents found home-schooling more challenging than working from home
• 44% of parents felt that home tutoring does not come easily to them but was the most fulfilling task they've ever completed • 42% of parents say that their child shares the working space of themselves or their partners
• 48% of parents say that as a parent to multiple children of different ages, they have their children home-schooling together and attempt to balance multiple curriculums
• 42% of parents agree that their child has the highest levels of stress they have observed in his/her lifetime

Bertie Hubbard, co-founder of EdTech platform MyTutor, discusses the impact which the pandemic has had on the mental wellbeing of young people across the nation:
“The last twelve months have been unbelievably tough year on teens and parents alike. After months out of school, exam cancellations, not seeing friends and worrying about Covid-19, it’s no surprise that 42% of parents are less stringent with home-schooling than previous lockdowns. Once schools open again, catching up on lost learning and prepping for assessed work in the summer term will bring another set of challenges for teens. They’re in more need than ever for some support and reassurance with their studies, and that’s exactly what our tutors offer. Our tutors are all from UK universities, and because they’re just a few years older they can easily relate to what teens are going through. With their dedicated one-to-one support, teens get some much-needed reassurance and come out with a stronger self-belief - 88% say that lessons made them feel more confident." Case Studies
Jennifer, aged 37, is a marketing consultant from Thornton Heath who has found homeschooling particularly difficult as she navigates her own busy schedule with that of her 8 year old daughter.
"I've found home-schooling incredibly hard to juggle with my own 9-5. Trying to balance providing my daughter with the support she needs whilst not falling behind at my job has been a tricky one but it's been one of the most fulfilling tasks. So, whilst I'm definitely relieved she can finally go back to school, safe in the hands of her wonderful teachers, a part of me will miss playing such a key part in her education."
Jonathan, aged 41, is a trades-person who still has to leave the house and go to his day job. He has two sons, one who is of GCSE age and one who is studying for A Levels.
"Home-schooling has been very trying this past year, however my two sons have done amazingly well considering I've not always been there to give them the help they need. GCSE and A-Levels are hard enough at the best of times, let alone during a pandemic so we're all grateful that schools can return now." Education

some sugar. Save some to pop on top of the dessert at the end. You could even add some liqueur (like cointreau) or other kind of alcohol like gin to the strawberries if you want, or just keep them alcohol free so everyone can enjoy them. On to the cream...
Whip the cream. It's important your bowl and whisk are clean, otherwise your cream will not thicken. In a large bowl whisk the cream with the icing sugar until it just holds soft peaks. Now make a mess...
Grab some glasses or small bowls, or you could make one big mess and let everyone help themselves. Start by breaking up some meringue on the bottom. Then add a dollop or two of the cream, and then some chopped strawberries. Repeat in layers and then top with some fresh strawberries and serve straight away - so the meringue doesn’t get to soggy. Simple. Summer in a dish.
Method... Start by making meringue, or buy ready made... Heat the oven to 120C/100C fan/gas 1. Then line a large baking tray with some parchment paper. Whisk the egg whites in a very clean bowl using an electric whisk or mixer until they form stiff peaks. Then add the sugar in three lots, whisking in between into stiff peaks each time. Spoon out some dollops of the mixture onto the baking parchment, and cook on the bottom shelf of the oven for 1 hour 15 mins - until the meringues are completely hard and come off the paper easily. Set aside and allow them to cool completely. Next, move on the Strawberry sauce...
Take 1/3 of the strawberries to make a strawberry sauce. Cut the top of the strawberries and place them in a kitchen bowl. Mash them up along with

GOOD TO GROW ... Your easy guide on what to sow in May - What will you grow?.. Getting green fingered doesn’t have to just be for the grown-ups. The kids can really make the most of this fun activity learning about nature’s goodness whilst creating some yummy healthy extras for the dinner table! This will also give them a great feeling of success and pride knowing they grew the food their family is eating another added bonus is a potential turning point for our picky little eaters encouraging them to try a new produce they have grown from scratch. So, what can we sow in May? From pumpkins to peppers we have an easy guide for everyone to get involved with in the garden this summer.
PUMPKINS With pumpkins it is best to start off by planting the seeds indoors in May and then move them outdoors around a month later in June. This will ensure that the seedlings get the best chance to grow successfully and you have a good end result. Pumpkins are versatile vegetables and very popular worldwide offering endless opportunities from creating tasty dishes to decorations for Halloween. Pumpkins have a very long season of growing and need up to 100 days frost-free so do not plant your pumpkins until you are sure all frosty mornings have passed you will want warm soil. Taking care of your pumpkin patch • When transplanting your pumpkin outdoors you will need to cover your seedlings to protect them from the cold. • Ensure you keep your pumpkins well watered, with them being made up of 80-90% water they are going to need watering a lot! • To ensure you are locking in moisture mulch around the seeds. • Regularly fertilizing your patch in the early days. • Replenish your compost or manure regularly. Why not grow your pumpkins this year in time for Halloween?
CABBAGE Cabbage is a fantastic vegetable to grow because it is full of vitamins and you can use it in an array of dishes! Cabbage will only thrive in cold weather climates (perfect for the UK!) and unfortunately can also invite unwanted parasites. So, how to grow cabbage from seeds successful? Follow our easy steps to growing your cabbage and give them the correct care.

SUMMER GARDEN PATCH
Summer Ideas_Double Page Editorial 19/03/2021 10:40 Page 2
• Start your cabbage seeds indoors around the beginning of May keeping indoors for up to 6 weeks. • When planting, choose a day that's cloudy rather than sunny. • Plant your cabbage 12-24 inches apart in rows. If you plant too close together the cabbage will be smaller. • Plant cabbage seeds about 2 inches deep. • Mulch thickly around each cabbage plant to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. • If it drops chilly use a black plastic over the plants and open a hole to push the plants through. • Cabbages are greedy, so try planting them away from other plants or vegetables as they will try to compete with them.
PEPPERS It is still early in the season so peppers and cucumbers will need to be sown indoors first and then transplant outside when a couple of leaves become visible. Growing peppers is quite easy, a perfect first gardening project if you are new to growing! Growing peppers is also fun as once the plant starts to show it looks very pretty! •Fill seeding trays with compost. • Plant 1 seeds in each compartment around 2cm deep. • Seeds should be indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. • Cover the tray with a black cover to keep the soil warm leaving an opening for the seedlings. • Once seedlings have 2 healthy leaves they are ready to be placed into single pots around 10 inches deep and wide. CUCUMBERS Cucumbers are other easy vegetables to grow right in your own garden patch! Cucumbers love the warm weather and plenty of water. When thinking of growing cucumbers, make sure all danger of frost has gone. • Plant the seedlings 40-60 inches apart to allow for good growth. • Cucumber plants don't require a lot of help as long as they have warmth and are well watered. • Cucumbers are usually ready for crop within 50-70 days from planting. Top Tip: Make sure to keep the pH between 6 and 7.

Have a go at
GROWING A HERB GARDEN...
and enjoy fresh herbs every day!
With a rising interest in becoming more self-sufficient, many Brits have made the most of extra time at home by taking up growing as a newfound hobby. ere is nothing worse than realising you forgot to buy the oregano for the Bolognese or the parsley for that salmon you have looked forward to all day. Growing your own has so many benefits not to mention it’s free. Indoor growing in winter... You may think that indoor growing in the winter is a great way to continue to produce throughout the cold months however; this is not always true because of the lack of natural sunlight in the cold months your herbs will not get enough natural sunlight from your window. You will be able to grow shade loving herbs all year round such as mint, dill, parsley and coriander however herbs such as basil, chives, dill, oregano, rosemary & thyme and tarragon prefer to grow in full sun.
Whether you’re a committed green fingered gardener or a complete beginner it is super easy to get started with growing your own, from outdoor veg patches to indoor herb gardens we have you covered, Indoor herb gardens are not only great for giving you instant fresh produce at your fingertips they also add a hint of greenery around the home which is a popular interior décor at the moment and lastly an indoor herb garden is perfect if you are short on garden space but love to grow. If you are new to growing then starting off with an indoor herb garden is a great low maintenance starting point, is it also rewarding to have a variety of new herbs ready available in your home for cooking. You can grow most herbs indoors with no fuss; however, there are a few in particular that really benefit from a warm corner of the home. These include rosemary and thyme, mint, basil, chives, parsley and oregano. Herbs need a lot of sun light; you will need to offer your herbs at least 5-6 hours per day. Place your plants in your best sun spot window, a south facing window is best also avoid dull and cool spaces this is not an environment your herbs will appreciate.
Mint
Although mint should be planted alone due to its tendencies to take over other herbs, it makes for a brilliant potted herb and will grow best this way. Mint is a vigorous growing herb and will grow without much care at all. Mint can be grown outside however be mindful that it does not take over any other outdoor plans and grow patched. The scent of mint repels aphids, cabbage moths and even ants so it is a great way to prevent ant’s nests. Basil
Watering your herbs... You will be happy to know that your herb garden will not require a vigorous watering schedule, to give your herbs the best nutrition ensure that you keep the soil moist but not saturated. A small dash under the sink tap will be plenty; however, if you notice the leaves turn a yellowish colour be sure to skip a few watering intervals.
32
GROW YOUR OWN
Growing basil indoors is easy; make sure pots have adequate drainage as basil is not tolerant to water stress, if you over water basil it will rot. When growing basil indoors lighting is very important, your plant will require a sun spot for at least 6 hours of the day so picking it position correctly is the most important thing you will do for this plant. Parsley
People who grow parsley indoors are often said to do it mainly for ornamental values however parsley is very practical to have in the house as it compliments so many foods from roasted potatoes to salads and soups! Parsley will require 6 hours of sunlight a day so it’s spot in the window is an important one. Turning your plant every 3 days will help the entire plant get enough sunlight. Placing your pots on saucers to drain any unwanted water will help prevent the soil from becoming too soggy.
Kids garden_Double Page Editorial 30/03/2021 14:32 Page 2
Oregano
Oregano is drought resistant meaning you do not need to water it excessively but do water it regularly little at a time. Oregano will thrive in the morning sun but also needs around 6 hours of sunlight a day. The more natural light the plant gets the happier it will be. Regularly pinching off leaves will encourage the plant to sprout more leaves and increase its harvest. Dill
Dill is another plant that needs a full 6 hours of sunlight. Dill will need to be planted in a pot around 12 inches deep as it is a long rooted plant, dill is best being misted with water also ensure a saucer under the pot for plenty of drainage. Rosemary and thyme
Rosemary and thyme have endless uses in cooking from rubs to salad dressing making it a popular herb to grow. Rosemary can be hard to support and easily killed off, the need good drainage and plenty of sunlight and could do with air ventilation to prevent mildew. Thyme is an easier one it’s a sun lover pretty susceptible to most living conditions.
Chives
Chives are probably the easiest herb to grow indoors, they are not fussy. You will need to your chive plant at least a six hours sun in the window and keep the soil moist; you will have no issues in growing a healthy chive plant to use in your homemade dishes. Why not add some chives to scrambled egg or as a finishing garnish for a pop of colour. Unfortunately, indoor plants are not forever but if they outgrow their containers there is the option to re-pot in larger pots or transplant out in the garden dependant on the time of the year and if they are perennial. Others you can move outdoors in the day and bring indoors of an evening. Be sure to take cuttings of any outdoor herbs prior to the frosty night so that you can start your growing process indoors all over again! Top tip…
Regularly cutting back your herbs will encourage fresh growth but be careful not to cut too much as this could kill your plants.

THE TOP 10 HOME IMPROVEMENTS TO INVEST IN DURING 2021 Loft conversions, new kitchens or bathrooms, real wood flooring and smart home wiring have been revealed amongst the top 10 most value-adding property features to invest in right now, according to new research. A recent study, conducted by Flooring Superstore, analysed live Rightmove listings and collaborated with top property experts to unveil which home improvements have the potential to add the most value to a property.
Loft Conversions, Extensions and Open Plan Living...
T
he Rightmove research suggested that real wood floors were most likely to have a positive impact on property prices in London, Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh. The investigation also highlighted that underfloor heating can increase the overall value of a home too, with this energy efficient form of heating most likely to boost property prices in London, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Glasgow, and Birmingham. According to industry experts, homeowners should look to invest in improvements that add to the overall footprint of their property. Creating extensions or home improvements that modernise, improve the general condition of, or add interest to – such as creating a dedicated work from home space, installing underfloor heating, or restoring original features came out on top.
Creating a loft conversion or extension was the most likely improvement that significantly adds value. New kitchen, open plan living, restoring original features, new bathroom, designated working from home space, new windows and doors, approved planning permission, smart home wiring, real wood floors and underfloor heating were other aspects that were likely to add value. While having a bath within the main bathroom – not just a shower – or having a working fireplace had minimal impact on the property’s value, these installations could sway a sale if in line with the personal preferences of the prospective buyers.

Potential risks...
Installing solar panels are a potential risk due to the respective tariffs, the fact that some see them as an eye sore, and the repair/maintenance costs. If the solar panels are leased rather than owned outright, it can make a property unmortgage-able. Similarly, outstanding planning permission could potentially damage the value of a property, as it implies that there’s a problem with it. As well as improvements within the property itself, expert advice suggests that landscaping outdoor space can also be a good investment to make. A well-maintained garden has the potential to add anywhere between five to 20 per cent to a property’s value – perhaps more as lockdown has created an increased demand for outdoor space. For those looking to revamp their external areas, artificial grass is easy to maintain, weather-proof, and pet-safe, so could be a good option.
The top 10 value-adding home improvements were revealed as: 1. Loft conversions / extensions (+19.38%) 2. New kitchen (+9.38%) 3. Open plan living (+8.33%) 4. Restoring original features (+7.38%) 5. New bathroom (+6.88%) 6. Designated space (+6.33%) 7. New windows and doors (+4.83%) 8. Approved planning permission (+3.75%) 9. Smart home wiring (+3.67%) 10. Real wood floors (+3.33%) Real Wood Flooring
Jessica Fox, Senior Marketing Executive, at Flooring Superstore commented: “Our research suggests that there are plenty of opportunities for homeowners to add tangible value to their properties. Real wood flooring has the potential to add up to 5 per cent to a sale price in some areas. We recognise the value of real wood flooring, which is why we have the Direct Wood Flooring brand and team of experts to advise on grades, shades, grains, trends and much more. However, if real wood is out of your budget or not practical for your lifestyle, then you can still get the premium look for less with our vinyl or EvoCore alternatives. Waterproof and scratch resistant, EvoCore is an extremely versatile range; suitable for all areas of the home. Practical, hardwearing and easy to maintain it’s great for busy family homes too. “For most of the top value-adding features in a home that our research revealed, flooring is an important consideration. For example, whether you’re getting an extension, new kitchen or bathroom, you need to consider functionality and style when it comes to the flooring type. On trend designs such as the popular parquet, is not only eye-catching and super stylish but instantly associated with luxury – for that all important first impression. Available in hardwood, laminate, EvoCore and vinyl designs, there’s a range suitable for every project too. “Whichever home improvements you are looking to invest in, it’s likely that your current flooring will be disrupted, so try to take advantage of this by updating your flooring at the same time”.

TABLE FOR SIX... The weather is getting warmer, and the smell of fresh flowers lingers in the air. The patio furniture is ready - under a gazebo (a bit of rain isn’t going to stop us), with comfy cushions and a throw or two, in case it drops nippy later on the the evening. Candles at the ready, so they can flicker through the evening... Oh, how we have missed this... But now we’re ready. It’s time to host our loved ones outdoors (six of them to be exact - or even more than six it they are all from just two households - and hopefully indoors from 17th May!). The bubbles are chilled, and are ready to be popped. The food has been lovingly prepared. Enjoy, wonderful people.
1.
Keep it simple...
Don’t spend time faffing around with food and drinks once the guests arrive. Prepare some fuss-free food platters and premixed cocktails, and you will have more time to chill out and catch-up with your loved ones. After all, that’s what we have been missing!
2.

3.
Glowing Evenings...
Invest in some eye-catching glasses or tableware in glorious, deep hues. Effortlessly chic, and instantly Insta-ready - you might want to get garden friendly plastic ones for guests who like a few drinks. There are some lovely ones to choose from which will make you will want to eat al fresco all the time - Cheers!
LED Candles, Moroccan lanterns or a fire-pit, can all add ambience. When the evening starts to drop dark, a flickering glow from some candles will allow you to keep getting-together outdoors for longer, and a fire pit will help keep you warm.

A new on-demand programme is available aimed at those looking to get fit and healthy as we prepare for the end of lockdown....
LOCAL NEWS Get fit in Telford and Wrekin with Aspirations@home online exercise sessions A new on-demand programme is available aimed at those looking to get fit and healthy as we prepare for the end of lockdown.... Designed for beginners or those looking to start on a new exercise journey, aspirations @ home is a free fitness programme that residents can tackle in the comfort of their own homes. Qualified fitness instructors will take people through low impact sessions designed for beginners and including Pilates, yoga, beginner combat, aerobics and seated exercises. aspirations @ home is part of TW Leisure services and is being brought to computer and TV screens across the borough in partnership with Let’s Get Telford Active and Ricoh Products Limited.
Councillor Eileen Callear, Telford & Wrekin’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Visitor Economy said:
“We wanted to ensure local residents have the option to get active, even if they are stuck at home under the current coronavirus lockdown conditions.
“We would like to thank our partners at Let’s Get Telford Active and Ricoh Products Limited for their support in launching this new venture, which aims to be both fun and effective in helping residents begin their journey to better fitness and a more active lifestyle.” aspirations @ home aims to provide residents with a form of physical activity that people can do at home as, after 12 months of COVID lockdowns, people may not feel ready to take part in physical activity as part of a group. e 4 key things to consider before booking
A Cosmetic Treatment after lockdown...
The best cosmetic treatments, are the ones you can’t tell have been done...
After months of restrictions on the UK's leading industries, the cosmetics arena is set to reopen on April 12th. While many patients will be waiting to finally receive top ups of their routine beauty treatments, the impact of lockdown on our physical appearances will see thousands of people across the nation considering procedures for the first time. Natural cosmetic innovator Uvence found that the year of the pandemic has had a significant impact on our perception of our own appearances, with our methods of 'improvement' extending beyond just topical face creams and treatments. Over 3 million Brits say that, because of the pandemic, they are now considering a cosmetic procedure in 2021 to combat signs of ageing and stress. While practitioners across the nation have already experienced an uptick in bookings before the reopening of clinics, they are anticipating a significant boom once they open their doors. Dr. Olivier Amar, leading UK cosmetic surgeon and CMO of Uvence, offers his top advice for those who are considering a cosmetic treatment after lockdown: 1) Do your research
4) Subtle not dramatic
Over the past decade the cosmetics arena has significantly evolved. We have moved away from more dramatic surgeries as people more commonly opt for subtle tweakments. The Uvence treatment is a prime example of this, as it utilises the patient's own cells to rejuvenate the skin, thereby offering a natural and bespoke alternative to traditional Botox and filler treatments. Again, researching what you actually want to achieve through treatment will provide a good indicator of what kind of treatments will work best for you.
Cosmetic Treatments
Having a cosmetic treatment is not a decision to be taken lightly. It is important that anyone seeking treatment does sufficient research into the what type of procedure they are considering, as well as what clinic or practice they are looking to administer it. The cosmetics arena is constantly growing; with more new treatments and technologies readily available than ever before, it can feel daunting and overwhelming when choosing or knowing what may work best for you. Remember: there is no rush, and taking your time is key. 2) Speak with someone you trust
The past year has been difficult for everyone, and it is clear how much this has taken its toll on our own perception of our appearances. Speaking with a close family member, friend, or trusted specialist about what it is you are seeking treatment for is important to help rationalise your thoughts and understand what it is you are wanting to achieve. Consultations with practitioners are another useful way of weighing up all of your options, who can provide further advice specific to the individual. 3) Give it time
If you have started to consider having a treatment done during lockdown, I would advise that you wait at least a few months before committing to anything. There is nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to cosmetic treatments, and opening the conversation around the topic is important to help people become more knowledgable. However, you should ask yourself the key reasons for wanting a treatment, and whether it has been a long-term consideration or simply a passing thought.
Cosmetic tREATMENTS_Double Page Editorial 26/03/2021 15:43 Page 2
Top Tips:
Go with a subtle look, rather than opting for dramatic changes to your appearance. Botox and fillers are literally game changing, allowing enhancements to be really tailored to your needs. But we have all seen the pictures of people who have gone a bit too far, with fillers, and ended up with a dreaded ‘Trout Pout’ - Remember, you can always add more later!
4 KEY THINGS:
1. 2. 3. 4.
DO YOUR RESEARCH SPEAK TO TRUSTED SOURCES
GIVE IT SOME TIME KEEP IT SUBTLE

Be constantly on the lookout for new offers, and don’t hesitate to switch providers if your contract is up and a better deal can be found elsewhere.” Here are all the price increases, big and small, coming to UK homes from April 1st: Stamps
on April 1st
• Additional prices increase for Stamps (8%), Water (3%), Air Passenger Duty (5%), Pint of Milk (10%) and Council tax (4%) • New report estimates £5.95 billion in added costs this year, with average cost of living increasing by £5.69 billion alone
• Personal finance experts launch annual National Price Hike Day report
A single first-class stamp now costs 85p rather than 79p. That’s a price rise of 6p or 8% more than 2020. It’s a 35% increase in price since 2015.
The cheapest sim-only contract will now cost £3.95 a month, up from £3.95 in 2020 – a 0% increase. Since 2015, however Mobile phone sim-only contract costs have actually declined in price. Broadband & Home Phone
The cost of the cheapest broadband and home package has risen from £15.90 in 2020 to £17.50 – a price hike of around 10%. Council Tax
The cost of a band D average house has risen from £1,817 in 2020 to £1,881 – an increase of 4%. Council Tax bills have risen 27% since 2015. Energy
Prescriptions
Despite falling from 2019-2020, the cheapest energy tariff for a medium user has hiked by over 15%. Up from £776.14 in 2020 to £903.45 in 2021. That’s an increase of 4% since 2015.
NHS Dental Check
Similarly, despite falling to just £396 on average in 2019, water bills are up again to £408, a 3% increase on last year and a 6% increase on 2015.
The cost of a standard prescription has risen from £9.15 to £9.35, a 2% rise on 2020 but a 14% increase compared to prescription costs in 2015. Unlike other costs on the list, NHS band one charges have increased recently - in December 2020 to £23.80 up from 2019s price of £22.70. As we’re only four months on from the recent hike, it’s likely that the price will remain at this level for the remainder of the year.

Soak up e Sun?
How important is it to get out and...
The health benefits of sunlight on the human body...
Living under nationwide restrictions has impacted many with feelings of stagnation, lethargy and a lack of motivation, with a third of Brits saying that working from home has made them the most lethargic and tired they have ever been. The timing of the last lockdown was also far from ideal, with the winter months seeing the reemergence of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), affecting one in three people in the UK, which is bound to have further adverse effects on our energy levels. As we venture through this month, seasonal weather will soon start to turn as the Summer months soon approach. With this brings greater exposure to sunlight. For example, over the month of February, each day saw an additional 2 minutes of sunlight, totalling up to a whole hour every four weeks. Scientific studies have shown that exposure to sunlight is thought to increase the brain’s release of a hormone called serotonin, which helps boost our overall mood and helps us feel calm and focused. Serotonin is also great for reducing stress and combating Seasonal Affective Disorder, a form of depression triggered by the changing season. But this isn’t the only reason to get out in the sun. John Nolan-Neylan, co-Founder and CEO of energy specialist, Revvies, discusses the health benefits of getting out in the sun: Strengthens your immune system
Vitamin D is critical for your immune system and one of the best ways to absorb it is through sunlight. In the time of Covid, a healthy immune system has never been more important as it can help reduce the risk of illness, infections and some cancers. Reduces stress
With many of us still working from home now, or you could say living at work, it has become difficult to escape the pressures and stresses of work, but getting out in the sun could help. Being outside in the sunlight will actually help your body naturally regulate melatonin, which can help reduce your stress level and reactivity. Additionally, because you're often doing something active when you’re
outside such as walking, cycling or running, that extra exercise will also help to lower stress levels. Helps to fight mild depression
Sunshine is great for improving your mood and it does this by giving a boost to your body’s level of serotonin, which is a chemical that improves your mood and helps you stay calm and focused. Increased exposure to natural light may help ease the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder and help to fight off depression. Improves sleep quality
When sunlight hits our eyes, a message is sent to the pineal gland in the brain and production of melatonin (a hormone that makes us drowsy and helps us sleep) is shut down until the sun goes down again. Your body gets a clear signal that it’s no longer night and this helps to maintain a normal circadian rhythm. When it gets dark outside, your body gets the signal again and you feel tired and drowsy at bedtime. Low levels of melatonin production at night due to overproduction during the day has been linked to poor sleep quality, especially in older adults. Maintains strong bones
One of the easiest ways to get vitamin D is by being outside. Our bodies produce vitamin D when exposed to sunlight and all you need for this is about 15 minutes in the sun a day. Vitamin D helps your body maintain calcium to support strong and healthy bones, so getting out in the sun is one of the easiest and most effective ways of strengthening your bones. Enhances brain function
Aside from promoting bone health and regulating vital calcium levels, scientists have now linked vitamin D with a number of functions throughout the body, including the functioning of the brain. A study by neuroscientist David Llewellyn of the University of Cambridge, assessed vitamin D levels in more than 1,700 men and women from England, aged 65 or older and found that cognitive function reduced the lower the subjects’ vitamin D levels were. However, more studies have found sunlight could help spur nerve cell growth in the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain responsible for forming, organising and storing memories.

Tailor your regime to you “It is vital for anyone who exercises or keeps fit to choose activities and workouts that are relevant and suitable to your lifestyle. Choose an activity you enjoy and have fun doing, this way you are more likely to actually keep it up. If you like running or going outside then do so. I really enjoy going out for a run as much as I can and because endurance is a bit part of my game on the court, cardio works well for me. And most of all, I enjoy it! This is so important as it’s so easy during lockdown to give up, but if you find something you enjoy and something that works for you, you will be more likely to stick to it.”
Track your progress “Keep track of your successes – hitting those targets is what keeps us motivated. Whether it’s losing inches or smashing your personal best, choose what drives you the most and go for it. Keeping track and making note of your workouts or exercises through a journal is one of the simplest and most effective ways to track your progress when working out and training, as it allows you to clearly understand where you are at and where you are aiming to get to.”
Allow time for rest and recovery “Recovery is one of the most important aspects of any fitness regime and not allowing yourself adequate recovery time can lead to decreased performance, exhaustion and cause chronic joint and muscle pain. Rest and recovery is important for your body to repair and re-energise, especially if you have had time away from exercising over the past few months. Listening to your body will help prevent you from burning out and risking injury. Adequate rest and recovery is just as important to progress as the workouts are themselves. Remember, the best results come from consistency, and the better you recover from your sessions, the more consistent you’ll be."
Maintain a balanced diet “Working out is one thing, but you will only see real results if you also work on your diet. A balanced diet will guarantee you get the most gains from your workouts and will also have you feeling better inside and out. Eating a healthy balanced diet accompanied by regular exercise is essential in maintaining physical and mental health and wellbeing, and right now this is more important than ever. Not only will this be effective in maintaining weight or preventing excess gain, but will also aid with your overall sleep and mood which is essential.”

Back to Fitness... Getting back to fitness post-lockdown, Deandre Liggins, NBA veteran and star guard for the London Lions gives his top tips for kickstarting your fitness regime... Keeping fit and healthy has never been more important, but perhaps never more difficult, with fitness regimes falling by the wayside during lockdown for many of us due to the cold weather and restrictions in place since the holidays. But now as lockdown eases and the nation gets ready for life post-Covid, millions across the UK are looking to kickstart their fitness and get back to exercising in time for the summer. Exercise plays an integral role in the lives of many, having undisputed benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing, providing millions across the UK with the opportunity to see their friends, stay active and relieve stress. But now with outdoor sports and group exercises allowed to continue across Britain, people might find it hard to find the motivation to get out and exercise again, so NBA veteran and BBL star, DeAndre Liggins shares his top tips to getting back to fitness: DeAndre Liggins - the NBA veteran turned BBL star has made a real impact since entering the league this season. During his time in the NBA, DeAndre has played with some of the biggest names in basketball from Anthony Davis in New Orleans to LeBron James in Cleveland.
Make a plan “Getting back to your fitness regime and training again after three months off can be tough and it can be hard to remain focused and motivated. Making a consistent fitness routine will help you to keep on top of your regime and a lot easier to stick to it. A lot of people start the new year on a fitness kick but then fail to keep it up, but if you make a plan and a strict routine, then you will find it easier to maintain. Sticking to your fitness regime is the hardest part, so finding one that keeps you focused and motivated is important.”
Set realistic goals “Getting back into fitness can be hard, so setting realistic goals is key. Split your fitness journey into six week blocks and set a goal each time. It might be about running further, increasing the amount of press-ups or sit ups you can do or just feeling better about yourself. Having realistic goals will spur you on to the next level and will also keep you motivated as you progress.”
Stay hydrated “Staying hydrated is key when working out or exercising. Being even mildly dehydrated can have effects on your energy and ability to perform. Staying hydrated also improves your blood flow and circulation which is key in the delivery of oxygen to the muscles you are working out. Fatigue can be caused by the lack of hydration in your cells; in order to optimise the production of energy from food, it is essential you drink enough water and avoid being dehydrated when keeping fit.”
Don’t make excuses “Nothing comes easy, so don’t make excuses. If you find it hard to motivate yourself, then try working out early in the morning. Start your day off right with productivity and this will help set the tone for the rest of the day. Keeping active has never been more important, but at the same time has never been harder. Many of us are suffering from a lack of motivation and it only takes one look out the window to put us off. Right now, we all need to stop making those excuses and just get out and do. And trust me, you’ll feel a lot better for it.” BACK TO FITNESS

Get Moving - Heart Health_Full Page Bleed New 19/03/2021 08:48 Page 1
Get Moving! Healthy Heart Tips...
Get moving...
Over the past year, it is fair to say that plenty of us have become more sedentary due to the effects of COVID-19. All those extra hours spent watching Netflix, with reduced travel time to work, and no gyms or sports facilities available, has meant that we haven’t always been paying attention to our hearts. Heart Research UK have some tips to break the cycle and get us moving anyway we can:
Avoid the ‘All or Nothing Attitude’
The majority of us nowadays have technology that calculates our step count, heart rate, sleep time, stress levels and more. Using your phone/watch to count your daily steps has been shown to increase how likely we are to meet daily physical activity guidelines, and lead to more successful weight-loss.
This can also relate to exercise and being physically active. One of the biggest barriers against physical activity is time, in general we tend to think if we can’t do a whole 30 minutes or 1 hour straight of exercise then there’s no point doing it at all. However, this isn’t true! The recommended amount of physical activity per week in the UK is 150 minutes. This can be made up however you like as long as your heart and breathing rate increase! It is suggested that we aim for 30 minutes 5 times per week, but that doesn’t mean you can’t break up that 30 minutes into 3 x 10 minutes or even 6 x 5 minutes.
Tracking your step count
Most of us don’t realise how few steps we are taking per day, or the significant impact we can have on our step count with just a short walk. Setting yourself a daily step goal can be a great first step towards improving your heart health. It is recommended to try aiming for 6000 steps per day to start with. You don’t need to achieve this all-in-one go, and it is possible to meet this goal through taking regular breaks and walking around your house. Going to the supermarket tends to be one of the only times many of us leave the house nowadays. Have you considered taking a backpack and walking to the shop to do your shopping? This will increase your step count and be a great way to fit in some physical activity which involves walking with additional weight. If the supermarket is too far, why not drive part of the way there and walk the rest, or even park the furthest you can in the supermarket car park from the entrance. Every step counts!
Have you ever thought “I will do the washing today” and then time becomes a problem so you end up thinking “I will leave it all to tomorrow then”; This is an all or nothing attitude. Plenty of us have this approach to many things. A way to avoid this is to break jobs up into parts. You may not have had time to do all of the washing, but you could have done some of it.
The key is to aim for little and often rather than all or nothing. For example, why not try doing some calf raises whilst brushing your teeth, or some mini lunges whilst waiting for the kettle to boil? Most of us spend a lot of time sitting, whether that be watching TV, playing video games or working from home. Set yourself a number of times per day that you need to stand up out of your chair. Before you walk away from the chair you could do 10 sit-to-stand exercises in a row, essentially this would be like doing 10 squats every time before you get out of your chair if you did this 5 times a day you would have achieved 50 squats! Drive...
For the most part today's ubiquitous SUVs possess a rather brutish habit and demeanour of sweaty would-be athletes, loud mouthing fellow members of the local gym in the changing room. I wouldn't want to cross them but neither would I really want to swap places with them. The new Alfa Romeo Stelvio blows away all stereotypes of shaven heads and sleeve tattoos. Here, wrapped up in the most elegantly designed suit of metallic splendour is a mid size SUV that looks smooth, purposeful and athletic. To put it in plain English - an SUV with real good looks. So, while you have all the necessities - four-wheel traction, more than ample accommodation for passengers and loads, plus a high-riding nod to the requirements of superiority that todays SUV configurations demand - you are treated also to that extra dash of style and frankly beauty which only the heirs of Renaissance harmony are capable of infusing into a twenty first century machine. At the heated steering wheel and settled on the comfortable heated leather seat and facing the wood inlaid dash, realisation quickly dawns that in the world of today, motorists are gifted with the ability to luxuriate in a manner once only dreamed of. Dreamed of that is in the grey area of unfulfilled aspiration known as the last century. This £46,755 Lusso variant is the SUV that offers peerless driver and passenger comfort with all the adjuncts to ease of use that we expect these days, together with all the rewards of charismatic endeavour. For the driver this means more than a clash or splash of sportiness as befits the marques unequalled pedigree. The lovely, smooth, 2.0 litre 200 bhp 4 cylinder petrol engine and seamless eight speed automatic transmission can power you up to nearly 135mph.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio Lusso . DNA mode selection can ensure you get around 40 mpg on a gentle run - but that's driving how you would not want to drive this Alfa. Drive in sport mode to really enjoy it and around 30 mpg is about right. But that's the price of real fun. Another realisation quickly dawned. It's this. Calling this particular car the Stelvio (after the famed Stelvio mountain pass with its hairpin bends) is by no means a cynical marketing ploy. There are no 'go-faster' stripes on show. And you wouldn't feel tempted to stop at the local for a ploughmans lunch in this car. No. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio demands a real deal because of what it is - a real deal. This motor is a carefully calibrated, road hugging head turner of true tenacity capable of nipping hairpin bends in the bud. It turns on a true turn of speed plus a taut
flexibility that represents a real summit of achievement. A 'pass' rate that's guaranteed a top of the class medallion. It's the kind of friend you want to take on continental tours, radiating an urgency that says 'not tomorrow but today....in fact right now.' This 'get in and go' driver urgency is most welcome and revivifying. It needs to be said that efficiency, reliability and practicality are all representative of the best in this class of car. But because it's an Alfa, there's more to come. Plenty more. It all comes down to those elusive qualities filed under subjectivity. But one doesn't hesitate to assert in a loud and clear voice that one is better suited behind the wheel of an Alfa than in many a much vaunted competitor in the class such as the Porsche Macan. There is, indeed, something unique about the Alfa
recipe that is irresistible to the palette. A Stelvio is a tasty treat for motoring gourmets. On a dark, rainy and depressing evening during the days approaching prophesied Armageddon, I discovered that there is nothing like the Alfa for banishing the blues. It helped that it was a good looking car. But on heavily trafficked roads west amid the glare of headlights and the threaded rubies of the tail light chain... at such times when shapes dematerialise and partake of democratic uniformity... it certainly helps that every now and then some little rewarding characteristic reminds you that you are driving a Stelvio. A car that becomes the gift that keeps on giving with all the reassurance that a five year warranty brings. proper element - out on the open road in sunshine and warmth. There beneath a clear sky the tawny landscape unfolds, relieved by nestling hamlets among poplar trees and vineyards. This is where the elemental forces that combine to produce forward motion achieve the very acme of perfection. And to be there you need to be behind the wheel of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. These dreams kept me warm as I pulled into a Wolverhampton shoppers car park, narrowly missing a shuffling queue of socially distancing masked and miserable souls waiting to enter Sainsburys. HOW TO BEAT DRIVING ANXIETY... It’s not just being out of practice that triggers these feelings, either. Accidents, near-misses, embarrassing parking mishaps, weather, stress, parenthood and divorce can all contribute to driving anxiety and loss of confidence. To raise awareness and help those who suffer from driving nerves or anxiety, we teamed up with Joanne Mallon, author of How to Overcome Fear of Driving: The Road to Driving Confidence, to find out how we can combat these feelings and become more confident behind the wheel.
What are the signs of driving anxiety and why do some people suffer from it? Sweaty palms, a racing heartbeat, shaky muscles – and that’s before you’ve even turned the engine on. While these are common symptoms, according to our expert, driving anxiety can appear in many forms. She said:
“Some people feel anxious just at the thought of getting into a car, whilst others feel fine driving in some situations but not in others. For example, it could be motorways, driving over bridges or driving at night. Everyone’s trigger points are different, but usually manifest via an increased heart rate and feelings of fear and panic.” Mallon said there are four main factors that commonly lead to driving anxiety: • A parent who was a non-driver or an unconfident driver - This could have had an impact during childhood
• Experience of any type of car crash - Even a minor prang could impact your confidence
Expert reveals how to beat driving nerves as lockdown anxiety is on the rise... If you’ve not been driving much over the past few months, you might feel a little nervous about getting back on the road when lockdown restrictions ease. Perhaps you’ve not been on the motorway for a while and you’re worried about restarting your commute to work, or maybe there’s a chaotic roundabout near your parents’ house that gives you nightmares. Either way, these feelings of anxiety are common, and you certainly aren’t alone. In a recent survey from Nissan, 23% of drivers said they felt anxious about using motorways and 39% felt scared or uncertain behind the wheel in general. Not only this, but since March 2020 when the UK first went into lockdown, Google searches for terms around driving nerves and anxiety have increased by a staggering 52%.
64 Driver Anxiety
• A prolonged and high degree of stress - Typically during a major life change such as having a baby, bereavement, or divorce • Stopping driving for a long period of time – Situations such as lockdown could lead to symptoms of driving anxiety
What can you do if you feel nervous about getting back in the car after lockdown?
If you’ve been feeling nervous about driving recently, you’re not alone. Mallon said: “I think this may turn out to be quite common, since so many of us are having an enforced time of not driving as we stay at home, plus we are in a time of extreme high stress.” So, what can you do to prevent these feelings? When getting back to driving, you should definitely take it easy at first.
Stay local - Make a few local journeys on routes you know well. We feel most at ease when we’re in familiar surroundings and have previous experience driving there. Play your favourite music - Music is a great mood lifter and stress reliever, so make a playlist of songs you love that you
Page 42 & 43 - Driver Anxiety_Double Page Editorial 12/04/2021 18:50 Page 2
can play and maybe sing along to in the car (singing will also help release endorphins).
Focus on the end goal - When you do tackle longer journeys, think about the end destination and why you're excited to go there, rather than focusing on the nerves.
Take care of yourself before you even get in the car Whatever keeps you calm, do more of it, whether that's yoga, running, meditation or listening to music. Creating a calmer environment will help reduce stress, even if it’s not down to driving.
Mallon said: “If you get into the car as a calm person then you have a much greater chance of staying that way than you would if you were getting into the car already feeling stressed and anxious. Avoid caffeine before you drive as this can trigger anxiety in some people.”
What situations commonly trigger panic and what can you do if this happens while behind the wheel?
While this varies from person to person, more often than not driving in unfamiliar surroundings can trigger nerves or feelings of anxiety. Thankfully, there are things you can do to help make your journey run smoothly.
stressful. In very extreme cases of driving anxiety, hypnotherapy can be very helpful.” What if they make a mistake on the road?
If you are out on the road and the driver makes a mistake, or the vehicle behind is showing aggressive behaviour, this can also be a trigger for panic. If this happens, try our tips to help them calm. Encourage deep breathing – This can be a great way to help anxious drivers feel calmer, and it's a good idea to practice this before you get in the car. Advise them to stop in a safe place – Direct them to pull over to the side of the road if they need to, especially if they feel shaky or short of breath. Ask them if they’d like you to take over - If you are a confident driver and are on the insurance, perhaps you could take over. Create positive energy - Repeating a positive mantra out loud can also help - my favourite is 'Calm and confident' - I say this a lot when I'm in busy traffic.
• Plan ahead by using Google Maps to check out the different routes you can take • Make a point of driving at less busy times - although one good thing about lockdown is that the roads in general are less busy now • On longer journeys, take regular breaks and stay well fuelled • Aromatherapy is another good way to stay calm. Try putting a cotton pad with drops of calming lavender oil in the car, or simply wear your favourite perfume when you're driving to give you a boost How can you support somebody who suffers from this?
Whether it’s an elderly relative worried about getting back on the road after shielding or to head to a vaccine appointment, or it’s a young family member who recently passed their test, if someone seems nervous or stressed in the car, how can you help? Should you encourage them to stay off the roads or help them face their fears? Our expert reveals it’s best to have an honest conversation with them: “Ask them what they need. Some people like having a passenger to chat to them for company and as a distraction, whereas others prefer their passengers to be silent so they can concentrate on driving. Don't complain about the music (or the singing!) if their driving playlist isn't your cup of tea. If they seem anxious, encourage them to take shorter, easier journeys. The trouble with giving in to fear is that you end up living a life controlled by fear, and it only gets more

In fact, only 29% said they have ever purchased or adopted a pet themselves and only 33% say they prefer animals over humans. Just 21% of people under this sign say animals are easily drawn to them. Leos come next with an overall score of 32%. Seemingly, these kings of the jungle prefer to give their attention to the most important person in their lives – themselves. Following Leos are Scorpios, with an overall score of 34% and Geminis with an overall score of 44%.
