24 JANUARY 2020 TIM BAKER HENRY TUDOR HOUSE, SHREWSBURY At the end of 2017, twelve years after their inception, the multi-award winning band, Hey Rosetta! went on hiatus, after selling 10,000 tickets to five farewell shows. For the band’s principal songwriter and lead vocalist Tim Baker, this was the start of a
new chapter. On his debut solo album Forever Overhead, Baker warmly welcomes you to it. The first words we hear him sing, on the first single Dance, is akin to a toast: 'here’s to the other side'. What follows are eleven songs that centre on kinship and show that Baker’s sharp songwriting, the heart of Hey Rosetta!, is as affecting as ever. When crafting the album, Baker drew from 70s songwriters, like Jackson Browne and Randy Newman, whose music filled his childhood home and from his contemporaries (Feist, Leif Vollebekk, The Barr Brothers). 29-30 JANUARY 2020 PEPPA PIG'S BEST DAY EVER THEATRE SEVERN Get ready for a road-trip full of fun adventures. (Reviewed by Luke Smith)
“Creams boasts some of the best desserts in Telford and is understandably the go-to place for dessert lovers...” The first Creams Café opened back in 2008, offering big flamboyant desserts, which took years of careful research, and a sprinkling of perseverance to perfect - but perfect it they did. Creams Southwater opened its doors at the beginning of November and we couldn’t wait to pay them a visit. The café is in a great location in the heart of Telford. Indy the Managing Director has poured his heart and soul into creating a modern and vibrant café, the perfect place for a tasty ‘pick-me-up’ after an hour or two shopping, or indulgent evening treat with family and friends. In addition to their amazing desserts Creams serve a range of hot drinks, milkshakes, freak-shakes, smoothies and much, much more.

Beautiful, flamboyant and delicious desserts, with a wide range on offer and Vegan options. Freshly made. Sundaes start from just £6.45 up to £7.95, waffles range between £4.75 to £7.95. Crepes start at £4.50.
A visit to Creams is an indulgent adventure for the senses, and the desserts are like ‘every day celebrations’ to be enjoyed anytime.

You are greeted by a magnificent selection of Gelato and Sorbets and of course a warm, welcome from the friendly staff who make you feel right at home. It was a cold day so I decided to warm up with a Latte, my colleague Luke on the other hand was in the mood for something a bit more fancy; the Ferrero Rocher Milkshake to be precise. It was just what the doctor ordered. The milkshakes are made with vanilla ice cream making them thick and dreamy. After careful examination of the menu I decided that the Crepe Royale was the winner for me, served hot and fresh with Ferrero Rocher, choc ’n’ hazelnut gelato, milk chocolate sauce and topped with roasted nuts – a combination of many of my favourite things, I was madly in love! Luke wanted to try something from the festive options, so the Winter Velvet Cookie Dough Waffle was ‘the one’- with red velvet cookie dough which is baked into a waffle, topped with

banana slices, white chocolate sauce and a scoop of Oreo gelato, then it is sprinkled with mini marshmallows, chocolate shavings and finished with a winter wafer and served with whipped cream or vanilla soft serve. The presentation is fabulous, and the taste was extraordinary and addictive. These mind blowing desserts are a must for all dessert lovers. There are so many I have to try; skyscraping rainbow-coloured Sundaes, big American-style waffles, silky-smooth gelatos, show stopping cakes and puddings - there is something for everyone, they even have a great selection of vegan desserts. For me a good dessert is like a good love story, it’s all about passion and commitment. This is the stuff that makes Creams special. A visit to Creams is an indulgent adventure for the senses, and the desserts are like ‘every day celebrations’ to be enjoyed anytime. Once you’ve experienced it, we reckon you’ll be looking to celebrate something – anything! Whenever you can!

VISIT ELLESMERE Winter bird watching in Ellesmere
W
ith a small heronry on the island, visible from the visitor centre, the mere is worth a visit at any time of year. In the winter it is particularly good for gulls with a large roost often containing some of the rarer species, and usually has a range of wintering ducks including Goosander, Smew. Wintering Cormorants have a roost here but keep an eye open for the occasional diver..
Ellesmere is well-known for its collection of glacial lakes, but just a short distance away lies a man-made lake which in just a few years has become one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire. In five years, Wood Lane has become a haven for long-legged water birds, with spring and autumn visitors including greenshank, redshank, whimbrel, dunlin, green sandpiper and little stint. These use the site as somewhere to rest during migration, while the variety of ducks to be seen are visitors all year round. Wood Lane Nature Reserve - A disused industrial site, now a haven for birds...
One of the best bird-watching sites in Shropshire, Wood Lane Nature Reserve has been developed in recent years on worked-out industrial land, Tudor Griffiths Group’s old sand and gravel workings near Ellesmere.
Several large lagoons with islands and surrounding wetland make up the reserve, which is surrounded here by a working landscape with mountainous heaps of sand providing a backdrop – and also the perfect nesting opportunity for hundreds of pairs of sand martins. Landfill and quarrying activities take place adjacent to the reserve.
More than 180 species of birds have been recorded at Wood Lane since the nature reserve was established in 1999. Pumps control the water levels, so that optimum amounts of mud and water are available for wading birds such as greenshank and curlew; islands have been created for safe roosting; hundreds of trees have been planted and scores of nest boxes installed. The reserve is a rare and much valued haven for breeding lapwing, tree sparrow and yellow hammer, while little ringed plover is another speciality. The sand mountain provides an ideal nesting site for sand martin, of which 500 pairs have been known. Waders, such as greenshank, godwit and whimbrel, drop in to feed up on their migration journeys in spring and autumn. There are around 40 breeding bird species on the reserve. There are two large hides facing the lagoons and school groups regularly visit.

INSPIRING TEACHERS Almost half of brits claim they owe everything to a truly inspirational teacher, according to new research...
A
nationwide survey has revealed that as many as 45 percent of Brits believe that, if it was not for a particular school teacher, their life would not be nearly as good as it is today.
And while one in ten said the majority of their teachers were pretty ineffective, as many as three quarters (74 percent) still have fond and heartwarming memories of someone particularly inspiring. According to the survey, half of Brits (44 percent) have even thanked a former teacher in later life for everything they did for them personally and academically.
In fact, the study by Endsleigh Insurance Services, found nearly two thirds (65 percent) of British adults believe their favourite teacher was in fact the only person who really believed in them during their school years. And as many as seven in ten believe a teachers helped them more than their own family did during those important years.
The survey also revealed English was the favourite subject at school for most adult Brits (40 percent), with History coming second (30 percent), and Maths third (28 percent).More than three quarters (77 percent) of the nation say that their favourite subject was directly connected to the skill of the teacher who took the lessons. And it had a lasting effect, because 65 percent still use some part of those subjects in their career.
However, 29 percent of those polled said they didn’t realise the importance of education when they were at school, 17 percent believe they had been allowed to "give up" on their education, and ten percent confessed they are filled with regret about their behaviour at school. Jeff Brinley, CEO at Endsleigh, which commissioned the survey to launch its teacher insurance offering, said: “Teachers play a pivotal role in the development of young people across the nation, so it’s reassuring to hear how many people recognise the value in the amazing work they do, and owe their success to an inspirational mentor.
“From really listening to their students, to never giving up on anyone, there are some key traits that make teachers stand out from the crowd, and create lasting impressions on their students – many of whom go on to use the skills they were taught in their later lives and careers.”
Our respect for teachers maintains, with a massive 87 percent of the 1,500 respondents polled saying that they believe teachers deserve more credit. And 77 percent of us think they work harder than ever. When it comes to what makes a truly great mentor and educator, listening is the key factor with 58 percent of people believing it is vital. Patience (56 percent) and

Interestingly, men were more likely to thank their teacher (47 percent) than women (42 percent). And it seems like the educator’s effects may fade as we get older, as only 58 percent of over 60s claim to have had an inspirational teacher, compared to 87 percent of 16-to-29-year-olds.

OPEN OPPORTUNITIES AT Haberdashers’ Adams Haberdashers’ Adams is holding a series of open events in January and February for families considering entry in Year 7 or the co-educational sixth form. Families considering entry into Year 7 are invited to attend a presentation and tour with morning and afternoon sessions on Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th February. Visitors will hear an introductory presentation from the Headmaster at 9.30am or 2pm each day. This will then be followed by a tour of the school conducted by the pupils themselves; giving visitors the chance to find out more about Adams and to ask any questions. Each session will last around two hours concluding with information on the application process for anyone interested in applying for Year 7 entry September 2020 or beyond.
Year 11 pupils thinking about sixth form entry have four opportunities to visit the school on the 9th, 23rd and 30th January and the 6th February. A wide range of A-level courses are available at the school which welcomes around 100 new pupils, boys and girls, into the lower sixth each year. Year 11 pupils and their families will also hear from the Headmaster before taking a tour of the school with sixth form pupils. For boys interested in boarding, there will also be an opportunity to visit the school’s two boarding houses: Longford Hall - the boarding house for year 7-10 pupils and the location of the school’s sports field – and the senior boarding house, Beaumaris Hall, which is home to Year 11 and Sixth Form boarders. Headmaster Gary Hickey explains: “We hold Open Days rather than special evening events to allow visitors to see us during a normal working day. We don’t run any special demonstrations or classes as that can give a false impression of the school. It’s very important to me that prospective pupils see the school on a normal day so that they can make a decision about whether Adams is a school where they think they could be happy.” Pre-registration is required for both Year 7 and sixth form events and is easy to do at adamsgs.uk/openevents

LET IT SNOW Indoor activities to help get you through winter...
I
t’s that time of year again, when the days are short, the nights are long and worst of all – your kids are stuck indoors because of the weather.
Those dreaded words ‘I’m bored’ rings in your ears, and you wonder if you can make it to spring time without losing your mind. The temptation is to let them play on their games, watch telly or play on the tablet and don’t get me wrong, it’s okay! We have all been tempted to do it so we can get some jobs done and let’s face it our sanity is precious too! But we know deep down that it’s not in their best interests to sit on them for the whole day, so what is a mere mortal mom to do? First rule of winter survival - BE PREPARED! Boredom Busters Stock up on crafty supplies like play dough, pipe cleaners, wool, coloured paper, paints, different shaped pebbles and stones, glue and all the bobbly eyes, felt and glitter you can carry. Stock up on baking ingredients too! Pebble Friends Kids love making things, and what could be better than creating a stone monster or pebble friend by painting different stones, and adding some bobbly eyes on. It’s a great way to let your child get creative and let their personality shine. Bake A Cake Baking is always great fun, even if it can be a bit messy at times, at least you get a delicious treat at the end of it all. Kids love cooking, so set some time aside to cook or bake with them and they will have a blast. You could get them involved with preparing dinner or better still, you could bake cookies, biscuits or a cake together. Go ahead and make some mess, pull on your aprons, wash your hands and get cooking
Boredom Busters... Staying home need not be boring... Build A Den – A den is a perfect snowy winter day activity – no matter what age your children are. Let them pull out all the stops and challenge them to build the best fort they can possibly imagine. Don’t limit the imagination to just pillows and blankets either. Let them use giant cardboard boxes, pool noodles, lots of bed sheets, whatever their heart desires - hours of fun! Make A Bird Feeder – Our little feathered friends can always use a helping hand at this time of year, and fortunately this ties in nicely with a fabulous winter activity for the kids. You can use cardboard toilet rolls, peanut butter and bird seed to make a simple bird-feeder, then string them up in the garden, or slide it on to a branch where they can be seen from the window. The great thing is you can then sit and watch which birds come to feed in your garden - so get watching! Which British birds will you spot? Of course snuggling down and watching a family film is a must, get your pyjamas on, make a hot chocolate (with marshmallows of course - it’s the law!) and grab the duvets and settle down together - magical!
Make Friendship Bracelets No childhood is complete without learning how to make some type of friendship bracelet. If you have any wool then you can help your child make these simple yet pretty items. These can be made to wear on the wrists or ankles and will keep them busy for hours. Have them make a list of friends they want to give a bracelet to so they can personalise them too. Being stuck indoors doesn’t mean you can’t have fun while stimulating your kids’ minds. With only a little bit of planning, you will have them occupied before you know it.
Winter Indoor Activities
And please try to relax and enjoy the time you have together. Our kids are all growing way too fast and winter is only a season. Sunny, warm days will be here again soon!

ATTENTION
PLEASE... Are Omega fatty acids the key to brain health in children and adolescents with ADHD? e know from previous research that amongst children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) receiving Omega-3/6 fatty acids— Equazen—delivering 558mg EPA, 174mg DHA, and 60mg Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) in a respective ratio of 9:3:1 over a 12-month duration meant that they did not require such a high dose of methylphenidate to manage and reduce their ADHD symptoms (0.8 mg/kg/day vs. 1.0 mg/kg/day)
W
Now, additional research from Researchers from King’s College London and China Medical University in Taichung, Taiwan also shows that omega-3 fish oil supplements improve attention among children and adolescents with ADHD that have low levels of omega-3 in their blood. This was a randomised controlled trial involving 92 children with ADHD aged 6-18 who were given 1.2g daily of the omega-3 fatty acid EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) or a placebo for 12 weeks. The researchers found that children with the lowest blood levels of EPA showed improvements in focused attention and vigilance after taking the omega-3 supplements. Of note is that the children in this study were not given DHA as well as EPA. Whilst EPA blood levels increased in the study, DHA levels did not. Although EPA is converted to DHA in the body, conversion can be quite poor. Increased intakes of both DHA and EPA modify cell membranes and are involved in brain and eye development. Low intakes of both EPA and DHA have been associated with child development disorders such as ADHD and dyslexia. Had the study supplementation incorporated DHA benefits might have been observed in all groups of children and adolescents with a range of pre-existing blood levels of both DHA and EPA not just those with low blood levels of EPA. LOW OMEGA INTAKES. Omega 3 fatty acid intakes are extremely low in children and adolescents in the UK. A new paper published in Frontiers of Nutrition, commissioned by Equazen, makers of a range of clinically proven omega supplements specifically researched and formulated to support brain health and cognition at key life stages, found that UK oily fish intakes, and as a result omega-3 intakes, are suboptimal across the lifespan with children and teens, as well as women and expectant mothers at massive risk of shortfalls. This paper in Frontiers was a secondary analysis of oily fish consumption data from the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) (years 2008-2016). Alongside this, data reporting omega-3 intakes were extracted from surveys published within the last 5 years.
Omega 3 and Brain Health in Children
INTAKES vs RECOMMENDATIONS. Despite UK public health recommendations that a healthy balanced diet should provide two 140g portions of fish each week, one of which should be oily, this analysis in Frontiers found that only a quarter (25.2%) of the UK population are oily fish consumers. Amongst those actually eating oily fish only 7.3% of children, 12.8% of teenagers and 15.6% of young adults (20-29 years) met oily fish recommendations. Intakes of oily fish overall ranged between 3.4 and 19.1g/day with even those at the higher end of the intake spectrum barely achieving the recommended oily fish intake of 140g each week. BROADER PERSPECTIVE Given these very low intakes of oily fish in youngsters as well as adults, without supplementation with an evidencebased formulation such as Equazen, omega 3 levels will remain low right across the UK population. Declining EPA and DHA profiles of farmed fish and the movements towards plant-based diets is only likely to lead to even lower levels of EPA and DHA. The paper in Frontiers also highlights data, which has shown improvement in ADHD and reading with EPA/DHA supplementation. In particular, a trial in children with newly diagnosed ADHD who were given Equazen in combination with the Ritlalin-type drug methylphenidate, found that doses of the prescription medicine could be cut by up to half. And a double-blind placebo-controlled trial by scientists in Sweden found children in mainstream schools who were given Equazen showed significant improvements in reading scores in just three months. LAST WORD. In the absence of improved omega-3 intakes from oily fish, supplementation with both DHA and EPA from an evidencebased formulation like Equazen is needed to improve the blood levels of both omega 3 fatty acids. Low blood levels of both EPA and DHA have been associated with ADHD and research supplementing children with ADHD with Equazen, which contains both omega-3s, meant that doses of prescription medication could be could be reduced. Overall the findings in the new Frontiers study and London/Taiwan research suggest that supplementation with both EPA and BHA are required to increase omega-3 blood levels and maintain brain health in youngsters and throughout life.

TIME FOR CHANGE Are children getting the education they need when it comes to climate change? school children should be included P inrimary the fight to save planet earth - but how?
We must make room in the primary school curriculum for climate change Former primary school teacher Oli Ryan of PlanBee says young children aren’t getting the education they need when it comes to the future of the planet.
Teen eco warrior Greta Thunberg’s impassioned speech to the United Nations moved many to tears – tears of shame at the failures of our generation, and pride in her uncompromising oratory. And just last week thousands of people around the UK joined a global climate change protest, with pupils of all ages walking out of schools and making their voices heard.
Children and young people understand all too clearly that the devastating effects of human activity on our planet will affect their generation more than any other.
Labour pledged to put learning about climate change at the core of the curriculum. It is the issue for children, looming above all others.Ignorance and complacency about the world we live in is no longer acceptable, nor will it help children learn to become socially responsible global citizens. Teaching children about issues directly related to climate change should go hand in hand with learning about ethical trading, and the harm caused by unchecked, rampant consumerism. But how do we do this? The school curriculum is packed, and teachers are already spending excessive hours planning for the existing curriculum subjects.
I believe that the answer lies in providing affordable, prepared lessons about climate change, social responsibility and global citizenship that are ready to teach and easy to use – regardless of teachers' prior knowledge of these issues.
Given that schools already teach their pupils about environmental issues, you might think that they do so because it is already included in the National Curriculum. But in primary schools, this is simply not the case: apart from a single reference to exploring the effects of littering and deforestation, there is no mention of other environmental issues.
While it is important to provide better climate change education, children will want to—and should—be included in shaping their own learning looks like.
Children are aware of some harmful effects of human activity, but we have not adequately equipped them to address many of the issues contributing to climate change. We are failing them. Unless we give children the practical skills to tackle climate change, we risk leaving them feeling helpless and illprepared for their increasingly uncertain futures.
Education - Climate Change
Environmental Education... It is important for kids to start their environmental education early. e fate of the planet will be in their hands soon, so it is essential for them to learn how to use resources wisely and join in the battle against climate change. It could result in a better, more sustainable and inhabitable world for future generations to come.
So how can we involve children in developing their own learning? I believe it should happen in schools, at a local level. Many primary schools already have 'eco-councils' made up of pupil representatives. With them, schools should devise learning that is tailored to the environmental issues that matter most in their local area.
By doing so, children will feel involved and experience tangible results from their efforts to improve their environment. One of the challenges of making climate change meaningful is that things that happen at global level are difficult for young learners to comprehend. Local learning—writing to a local business to encourage them to save energy by turning off lights at night, for example—can help children feel empowered: they will see the outcomes of fundraising, clearing up litter or campaigning for change. This generation realise that it is not only our personal responsibility to recycle, reduce waste and save energy, but also to demand that government and businesses do more to protect the planet. Now, we must support them, involve them, and provide the practical skills they need to make change happen.
Oli Ryan is a former primary school teacher who now works for leading lesson-planning and resources experts PlanBee.

REBELLION PUNK SPIRIT... The return of Punk isn’t a surprise to me. It’s one of the original symbols of defiance and rebellion. You don’t have to rock a skinhead or listen to death rock to embrace the ‘New Punk’ look. Rather than boots and jackets covered in huge spikes, new punk is a little more slick, with futuristic Matrix style black leather and classic tartans or designer jeans, studded jackets and some Doc Martens of course! Punk is a way of expressing your individuality, it’s about not conforming to the ‘norm’ and it’s about discovering your own authentic punk style. This year there will be plenty of wardrobe options to help you achieve it.
BACK TO THE 80’s... Ah the eighties, I remember it well. Glitter from head to toe and shoulder pads galore. The eighties is this winter’s obsession and the glam look is back with a vengeance. Admittedly it is not for the faint-hearted but by erring on the side of subtlety, means anyone can pull off 80’s-inspired styles.

e Mindful Home... With the stresses of everyday life growing all the time, ‘to-do’ lists take over our lives and our schedules become overloaded, we often struggle to take care of our mental wellbeing. Many people are turning to a more mindful way of living, with yoga and meditation growing in popularity. But it is not enough to just de-clutter our minds, we need to pay attention to our homes so that they reflect a more calming, mindful atmosphere too.

Stay Home... A Fresh Start... Everything is fast, easy and digital, yet natural instinct pushes us to disconnect and slow down to regain our sense and quality of life. As a fresh start to the new year, Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice, shares 3 style tips for designing a home that’s focused on mindful living.
1. Start with a clean and calm neutral palette. Begin the year refreshed and rejuvenated with the help of a home environment that focuses on living well. Start by introducing a quality of softness into the home, coupled with interior design that’s comforting and inviting. “Let the intention of creating a clean and soothing ambience guide your design decisions,” advises Rebecca. “Ultimately, the goal is to create a personal haven you’ll love going home to relax in.” Make it a priority to get plenty of good quality sleep. In the bedroom, an oatmeal fabric bed presents the perfect starting point in a space meant for restful slumber. Introduce neutrals in varying tones for interest and depth. Safe, perennial hues to try include white, soft grey and the recently popular greige. Select comfortable bedding with minimal prints to focus on creating an uncluttered, restful environment. Where possible, go with furniture that feature curves and organic lines instead of sharp, straight edges.
2. Nature is nurturing. Nothing relaxes the mind more than being surrounded by nature; particularly, plants. Start the year on a green note by maximising on the benefits of having indoor plants. Choose a mix of large and small greenery, and varieties that help clean the air. Leafy, trailing plants also inject a little wildness to create a tropical inspired ambience. Besides making the air fresher, their lush

green colour is soothing on the eyes after a long day of working with screens. To continue the natural theme, pick furnishings made with materials like wood, rattan, or clay. “The warmth and rawness of their surfaces contribute to a design that has a soothing, back to nature vibe,” says Rebecca.
3. Dedicate a corner for conscious relaxation As a reminder to make wellbeing a priority for the year ahead, allocate a corner that’s dedicated to relaxation. “A little nook will do; you’ll only need enough space to practise your preferred stretches,” says Rebecca. For meditation and stretching exercises, fit it out with a yoga mat or thick rug. “And if you have a work desk at home, it’s a good idea to carve out a zen zone within the same room for quick stretch breaks.” Maintaining the same neutral palette, style the space in light hues, and include plenty of plants. Another factor to consider is the accessibility of natural daylight, as it can help reset a confused circadian rhythm. A wellness inspired space that embraces disconnecting and being present will likely become a favourite spot in the home. Main Image: Harlow Dove Grey 2 Seater Sofa £399.99 - www.furniturechoice.co.uk

WINTER BIRDS Help Your Garden Birds is Winter With Top Survival Tips From CJ Wildlife
W
inter’s glistening frosts are upon us with short, cold days and longer, much colder nights.
This marks the most important time of the year for our garden birds as the harsh weather conditions mean that they are struggling to find enough natural food supplies and also less time to find suitable alternatives. There’s usually lots of competition at the feeders so the smaller birds such as Blue Tits and Robins often have to wait until the larger birds have had their fill, further reducing the time available to feed.
As resources become scarcer, birds have to make every minute count when it comes to finding food. A small bird such as the Blue Tit needs to eat 30-40% of its own body weight each day just to survive. Supplementary winter feeding is therefore vital for our birds as their natural diet sources are at their lowest during the winter months. We can all help by providing a generous supply of high-energy foods; the more diverse the better, as you’re more likely to attract a wider variety of species. Here are CJ Wildlife’s top tips for helping your garden birds survive the winter:
Replenish feeders regularly Birds need to know they have a regular supply of food if they're going to visit your feeders. Check them daily and replenish their contents regularly and ensure they are sited in sheltered locations wherever possible so they don't get buffeted by wind and rain. Always make extra checks after really bad weather such as blizzards too, as the birds may have been waiting a long time for the worst conditions to pass. Regularly brush off any ice and snow so the birds can continue to get to the food you provide. Minimise disturbance to feeding areas, particularly at the beginning and end of the day when the birds are most desperate, and feeders are at their busiest. You can help further by keeping pets indoors at this time and putting out extra feeders to reduce queues. CJ Wildlife Conqueror™ Feeders are just the job – with up to 12 ports and a capacity of 3.5kg for the largest size. It is a great idea to keep your food stocks topped up too, as you don’t run out when they need it most or experience any delivery delays due to severe weather conditions. Offer high-calorie foods When time is short, birds have to feed efficiently so it is vitally important that they consume as many calories as possible and you can help this with the foods you provide. There will be many species using your feeders, so offer food that will cater for as many of them as possible and is also rich in energy, you will really make a difference.Sunflower hearts are perfect as they allow birds to consume calories quickly without wasting valuable energy de-husking the seed. A seed mix such as CJ Wildlife Hi-Energy No Mess is full of premium quality ingredients and is specially formulated for wide appeal, which is why it has
Winter Birds
been a customer favourite for over 20 years. Fat or suet products are another popular choice as they give birds a vital energy boost. The unique recipe CJ Wildlife Peanut Cakes are ideal and can be fed whole in special cage feeders, chopping into chunks or just rubbed into tree bark or fencing to help smaller birds such as Wrens and Long-tailed Tits. The new CJ Wildlife Ultimate Fat Balls, Peanut Butter Pine Cones and Coconut Halves are packed with calories and quality nutrients which make for excellent additional winter treats. Try these fat balls in the Fat Ball Feeding Ring which can take 10 at a time! Provide fresh drinking water Clean plumage is important for insulation during long cold winter nights, so your birds need water daily to bathe as well as drink. Birds relying on a dry, seed-based diet need water more frequently. You may already have a bird bath, but they are often frozen over when temperatures plummet and that means birds can find it difficult to get access to fresh drinking water. Try to go out every morning to break the ice on the surface, or just melt it with a jug of tepid water if you prefer. Don't be tempted to add any kind of chemical agent to the bath to prevent freezing, as this is harmful to the birds. Add shelter for protection Although even the smallest birds will fluff up their feathers and hide in dense evergreen trees or hedgerows where they can, it's better to offer them some form of proper shelter. Whist the breeding season is a few months away, putting up a nest box now can provide essential protection from icy winds and increases the chance of it being accepted for use in the spring.
There are a wide range of nest boxes available at CJ Wildlife depending on which species you want to cater for, with the exclusive WoodStone® nest box range being guaranteed to last for 10 years! You may not be able to invite your feathered friends into your home for a warm in front of the fire, but you can do the next best thing for resident garden birds by following this advice to guard them against wintery weather.
To see the full range of bird and wildlife care products and take advantage of seasonal savings on Hi-Energy No Mess Seed Mix, Conqueror™ Feeders and more, visit www.birdfood.co.uk or call Freephone 0800 731 2820. With Free Standard Delivery on all orders until 1/1/20, be sure to stock up now.

SWEET &
INNOCENT? The hidden dangers of alternatives to sugar...
T
he war on sugar has been well documented. Moves towards sugar taxes and similar legislation show that the demand to cut down on sugar has been growing.
Many companies have answered this demand, and sought to avoid paying sugar taxes, by replacing the demonised sugar with far more publicly palatable sweeteners. GlobalData food editor Callum Tyndall says: “Many sweeteners, such as aspartame, are artificial (something that doesn’t sit well with wellness-invested consumers) and there are still important questions to be asked around just how healthy these sugar alternatives really are.
“Earlier this year, we looked at whether sweeteners were actually healthy or safe and how they matched up to the claims made around them. The question now, as they continue to serve as the principal alternative to sugar and gain subsequent steam as the push against sugar continues, is just how do they fit into the wellness movement going forward and what else may be out there for the alternative market? “The chances of sweeteners being harmful are low, studies into the field are yet to find indications of adverse health effects from using common sweeteners in normal amounts. This does not preclude further studies from finding such effects or placing more of a dent in the reputation of sweeteners (it is a field still relatively understudied), but consumers can at least feel fairly assured that their sweetener isn’t a hidden ill. They should, however, be asking themselves whether it is in fact an outright good. “Many sugar replacements have been shown to actually be sweeter than sugar itself, without having the negative health effects (or have at least not yet been proven to have said effects). “However, perhaps the greatest health concern when it comes to sweeteners, at least of the artificial kind, is that, due to their lack of nutrition, they may push consumers towards eating unhealthy items in some kind of recompense for the sugar they’ve avoided by using a sweetener. While consumers may be seeking to avoid the calorific dangers of sugar, they may, in fact, be placing themselves at a different kind of risk. “Ultimately, while there is a strong chance that the sugar alternative market will continue to grow as consumer defect from table sugar, there is a good chance that the actual best choice from a health perspective is not to seek out an alternative, but simply to be mindful of consumption and employ regular portion control.”

WHICH SUGARS SUBSTITUES SHOULD YOU USE? 1. STEVIA
Stevia, is a natural plant indigenous to Peru and Brazil, and it is made with little-to-no chemical additives. The substitute has no effect on your blood sugar, and it can actually improve insulin sensitivity, which helps your body effectively use glucose for energy. 2. RAW HONEY
Raw honey is not only all-natural, but it contains antibacterial properties, especially in the darker varieties. Studies have also shown that people who consumed honey instead of sugar showed a reduction in both their body weight and fat. It also has a molecular structure that resembles glucose, making it easy for the body to digest. 3. COCONUT SUGAR
With a taste similar to brown sugar, coconut sugar contains a variety of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that white table sugar lacks. The substitute also has a lower glycemic index than refined sugar, keeping your blood sugar and insulin levels more steady. 4. PURE ORGANIC MAPLE SYRUP
Organic maple syrup is another great natural option for sweetener, as long as it’s not the kind packaged in a bottle with corn syrup that’s often served with pancakes. 100 percent maple syrup contains up to 54 antioxidant compounds, and it can help fight cancer, improve your skin, and even fight bloating, among other benefits.

PARK ST CLINIC
SHIFNAL
About Park St Clinic... Park Street Clinic is a medical aesthetic clinic based in the Shropshire market town of Shifnal. Providing a variety of nonsurgical aesthetic and advanced skincare and body treatments. For your peace of mind, all procedures are carried out by a GMC Registered doctor and an NMC Registered nurse.
LIPOCONTRAST What is Lipocontrast?
Lipocontrast is a body contouring treatment, based on advanced Cryothermal technology. At Park Street Clinic, we are one of the few clinics in the West Midlands to have this advanced machine. Lipocontrast delivers rapid results by heating, cooling and heating the fat cells, reducing body fat without damage or invasive methods. 33% of the treated fat tissue will be eliminated and gradually breaks down through the metabolic system. Approximately 80% of the final result will be visible within 20 days. Typical daily activities can be resumed straight after treatment, including returning to work and exercise regimes.
How does Lipocontrast work?
The treatment area is cleansed and an ultrasonic gel is applied to the area, the head of the machine is then placed on the treatment area, the client may feel an uncomfortable sensation immediately which will ease within a few minutes and the treatment will cause minimum discomfort thereafter.
What results can I expect?
The effect produced is almost immediate. After treatment with the Lipocontrast thermal shock, some fat cells are immediately disabled and will be eliminated within a few days. Other cells enter in severe apotheosis phase and will be progressively eliminated within a few weeks. Depending on the adipose tissue thickness and the desired result, 1 to 3 sessions will be necessary, with an approximate interval of 4 weeks between each one – much shorter than cryo-lipo alternatives, giving quicker results.
Does this machine improve cellulite?
Helen & Rachel
60
The Lipocontrast machine is able to perform treatments to improve cellulite using a method called Lipolysis. This is where the fat cell is shrunk through a heat and vacuum suction process. Areas that can be treated for cellulite are buttocks, thighs, waist/ abdomen, arms, and the calves. For the best result, we recommend a course of 6 treatments on the desired area twice a week, followed by maintenance.

Winners. Spare a thought for them. ey're not like us. ey rise above the motley throng. ey 'ascend the brightest heaven of invention' as that well known motoring journalist from Stratford Upon Avon once put it. (Very presciently of course, as motor cars weren't even invented in his day). 'The pinnacle of success has been achieved and one stands bathed in bright light and rarefied air' - or to put it rather more prosaically when one is finally granted a moments leisure after scrambling up greasy poles and is able to relax in a bath of Swarfega: even then a shadow impinges upon the glorious interlude. The shadow is known as doubt. This can take two forms. The first, famously experienced by Alexander The Great having conquered the whole world, takes the shape of an existential morbidity best expressed in the question: 'What next?' The second arises out of the knowledge that all those vanquished competitors haven't gone away. Worse, they are just itching to knock you off your pedestal. At such moments it becomes clear that winning is one thing, but to keep on winning - well that's something else. Such sophistries were whirling through my brain that day. For I was charged with the task of assessing the very latest £36,190 BMW 320d M Sport saloon. To remind you, the solitary reader who needs reminding, the 3 Series represents one of the greatest manufacturing success stories. The enviable combination of comfort, style plus performance, achieves in the hands of BMW a dynamic distillation of excellence, fit not just to rival anything on the market but set to establish a sui generis pinnacle of prestige among the motoring fraternity. Here is that rare instance of a status symbol that is actually good in itself. A motor car that isn't simply made for show, but made to go.
There before me bathed in the misty vapours of the inner ring road couched like an alpha predator in repose, was a seventh incarnation of the 3 Series. The obvious question raised itself. Would it represent 'seventh heaven' for executive motorists or would it endorse the disappointment that attends the de-throning of a once mighty plenipotency? I had to find out.
A reservation crossed my mind. It's a moan I share with many and it is this. Why. Oh why do cars keep getting bigger? There seems no preventing this. It might not matter in lands where roads are wide and pinch points few. But it matters here in Blighty. Not only does the squeeze factor increase as gaps get smaller owing to bigger vehicles (And by the way

BMW 320d M Sport have you seen the size of tractors these days?). But here in Olde Albion we are experiencing nothing short of a parking crisis. Why build new car parks when you can extort money through existing overcrowded, overpriced and inadequate provision, with the added opportunity of penalising the unfortunates who fail to find a spot. They rightly fear the attentions of over zealous petit officialdom.
Pardon the hiss of escaping steam. Will no-one listen? That niggle aside, there are in fact benefits to be derived from bulk. Especially when bulk doesn't mean excess weight but represents instead a surfeit of luxurious comfort, an abundance of defensive security, amplitude of passenger and load accommodation, plus road presence aplenty to deter delinquent others. That my friends is what you get with the new BMW 3 Series. And that's just for starters. You get a choice of engines- a turbodiesel (with optional 4x4 technology) or a petrol engine. The former hands you 2.0 litres of capacity on a plate: the later 3.0 litres. These engines put out
respectively 190bhp and 258bhp. The 2.0 diesel is simply a jewel of an engine. Driving through a superb 8 speed auto box to the rear wheels it will propel you to about 150mph yet economy works out around 53/55 mpg.
If the decision between performance and economy is a tough one, why not have both and opt for the latest arrival to the range - a plug-in hybrid? whatever your choice you're guaranteed more than sensible economy and plenty of poke besides.
Not to mention, of course, that driving experience by which quite rightly BMW sets such score. Certainly as I took the wheel, I was looking forward to a good experience. Nor was I disappointed. Even though many an aficionado of ambient excellence would be more than adequately rewarded merely by sitting in the beautifully appointed cabin and going nowhere, this BMW is made to be driven and does indeed drive like a dream. All the best cars become an extension of the driver and the new 3 Series is no exception. Though a
Saloon 2.0d. fairly large and conscientiously refined carriage this car feels light on its wheels, firm on its rubber and sensitive to the informed touch of the driver.
I made for country roads by the Shropshire borders where I knew I could escape the congestion of the conurbation. Here I could explore the nuances embodied in engineering excellence of the sort espoused by BMW and extolled by enthusiasts everywhere. The new 3 Series has the ability to please the driver because of BMW insistence on endorsing the pleasures of motoring. Accompanied by just enough engine notes to stir the spirit and just enough sophistication to keep the fillings in place, this grippy and responsive saloon had me - dare I say it- ascending the shimmering staircase towards seventh heaven. This car is, after all, I reminded myself a seventh incarnation of the 3 Series. And a little extra corniness surely wouldn't go amiss here on the road weaving between cornfields. Back on the inner ringroad I relished the respect shown to me as a BMW driver. Things were different, however, in the car

park where I was forced to join one of the inner circles of the warm place below - Hell! As thwarted motorists drove round and round at the pace of a snail's olympics looking to pounce on a vacant space. It was bad but to my relief I had a touchscreen to touch and wonderfully clear speakers to fill my ears with rhapsodic melodies. With ample room to stretch and climate control to comfort me, I concluded that I was really in the best place of all. Why park when you can carry on cruising in the new BMW 3 Series?
