St Nicholas Bar & Grill... The

Gospel

Grilling...

of

The Gospel of Grilling by St Nicholas Located at the entrance to Shrewsbury Castle, in the heart of the picturesque town, within a converted old church, St Nicholas is home to a Luxury Moroccan inspired Day Spa, Hotel Rooms, Café, Bar and more recently a Grill Restaurant. The building itself is fabulous, with Romanesque styling, deep moulding to the round-arched doorway and windows which give it an eccentric vibe, it is a truly wonderful place to visit.

Recently taken over by Eddie and Tracey Uyan and their three children, the family run Bar & Grill - which opened back in February, is situated on the ground floor of St Nicholas. Offering a varied menu, using the best ingredients available which are sourced from a small number of hand-picked suppliers – for example the beef is sourced from assured farms in the counties of Devon & Cornwall with traditional & continental beef breeds that are fed on a grass based diet and you can taste this in the food.

My husband Stef and I went along on a busy Saturday evening, a grass path leading the way into the restaurant, where we were greeted by the friendly staff who showed us to our table. It was busy with couples and a couple of larger tables of people celebrating special occasions, making for a vibrant, infectious atmosphere. The menus offer a great selection of drinks, including Prosecco Platters and Cocktails galore; I was driving, so Stef made the most of it with a large glass of crisp Chardonnay, whilst I had a coke. The friendly server, Chantel, ran through the menus with us, recommending the Slow Roasted Beef Short Ribs with Drunken Bacon Jam Glaze, Parmentier Potatoes and

St Nicholas Grill_Double Page Editorial 28/07/2017 15:23 Page 2

Chantel’s recommendation of Short Ribs (£14). The steaks are hand-picked and matured on the bone to maximise flavour. The Porterhouse; a large, tender, juicy slab of steak, with excellent flavour, comes served with rosemary and garlic Parmentier potatoes, roasted balsamic heritage tomatoes and Provençal vegetables. I asked for medium-rare and that’s exactly what I got – perfectly cooked and excellently presented. Stef was blown away by his short ribs, which were extremely meaty; the glaze making this a very individual dish, bursting with flavour and extremely juicy.

We were offered more drinks by the strapping young waiter – so we had another round.

Béarnaise Sauce (£14), we took a few minutes to browse through the choices which include some exotic options like Kangaroo Fillet, Zebra Fillet, Ribeye of Italian Buffalo and even Crocodile Tail Fillet!

I opted for a starter of Grilled Blackened Gambas Prawns with Marinara Sauce, served on Garlic Bruschetta (£8), whilst Stef decided to try the Wild Mushrooms, sautéed in Smoked Garlic & Lemon Thyme on a toasted Ciabatta (£7).

Some people think of prawn dishes with a little trepidation, whereas I love getting stuck in, and find that the little bit of effort is always worthwhile. This was no exception – the prize; juicy plump prawns –paired with the garlic bruschetta and sauce this rounded up into a delightful dish. Stef was equally impressed with the variety of mushrooms, each of which has a unique and distinct flavour all of their own, and wonderfully tasty with the infusions of garlic, lemon and thyme and the lightly toasted ciabatta bringing it altogether – a great start.

For our main courses I opted for The Porterhouse 10oz (£24) and Stef went with

For dessert I couldn’t resist the Lemon and Raspberry Tart (£5) which came with a dollop of clotted cream and for Stef – his favourite St Nic’s Sticky Toffee Pudding (£5). I love Lemon Tart and combined with the raspberries, this was one of the finest I have sampled, the zingy lemon and sweet raspberry making an excellent partnership and the clotted cream was divine. Stef let me try some of his sticky toffee pudding; which for him only means one thing – he is extremely impressed but hasn’t got the words to describe just how good it is! It ranked #1 on the long list of Sticky Toffee Puddings – which includes some of the finest eateries in the area and comes highly recommended.

The devotion to creating top quality dishes has paid off and coupled with the amazing surroundings, makes St Nicholas an excellent choice for eating out. On the ground floor you will find the cafe during the day, and a bar and grill on the night. On the first floor is the luxury spa, the second floor is the private hire / Saturday night bar and on the top two floors there are hotel rooms. Specialities: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Drinks and Coffee PLUS Private Hire.

e Dickin Arms... The

Home of Good, Honest,

Homemade

Food...

My fiancée and I decided to take a trip to visit The Dickin Arms, set in the pretty village of Loppington, we were really excited to sample the food on offer, and to take a look around following a full renovation which was carried out between January- April this year. As soon as we arrived we were instantly impressed, the décor has been carried out to perfection, with traditional features such as the massive fireplace at its heart, injected with the modern kick that really gives this place an edge.

We were warmly welcomed by the waitresses for the evening and shown to our cosy table, where we were provided with the main and specials menus, as well as a comprehensive wine list, both of us decided to go for a soft drink, which we enjoyed while we browsed.

There are a wide variety of dishes available, which we deliberated over for a little while, it wasn’t easy to choose, as they all sounded stunning- which is never a bad thing. For our starters we couldn’t resist the Tomato, Basil Pesto & Goat’s Cheese Bruschetta, Sticky & Spicy Old English Sausage and Dusted Paprika Calamari – all served tapas style, which we absolutely loved. We were amazed with the quality of the dishes served but also equally impressed with the quantity – generous to say the least. The tomato, basil pesto & goat’s cheese bruschetta was a great starter; the basil pesto full of flavour and the combination of the goat’s cheese and the sundried tomatoes with the soft bruschetta was fantastic. Our second choice was the sticky and spicy old English sausage, the sausage was perfectly cooked, very juicy, which when combined with tangy sauce made

The Dickin Arms_Double Page Editorial 07/08/2017 15:22 Page 2

We couldn’t resist pudding as the choices available were once again impressive. Ashleigh opting for the Dark and White Chocolate Brownie with Honey Comb Ice Cream and for me, the Treacle Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream was a must. Ashleigh’s brownie was moist, as soon as you broke the brownie open, the chocolate oozed out, melting in your mouth gloriously, with the ice cream this made the perfect finale to Ashleigh’s dinner. Mine was equally as good the treacle tart had the perfect amount of sweetness, exactly the way I love it, still allowing some sensational flavours to flow out and ice cream that was partnered with it made this a great combination.

for another wonderful choice. Our final choice was the calamari, which is my ultimate favourite starter whenever I go out – this one didn’t disappoint one bit! The batter was crispy, inside the calamari was beautifully soft; the best I have sampled what a great start to the evening!

Overall we loved our experience at The Dickin Arms and would highly recommend to anyone. They serve excellent homemade food, with quality in abundance and the décor really gives a comfortable and welcoming setting to relax and enjoy good food and drink. We will definitely be returning soon to try some of the other tempting dishes on offer.

For the main courses we decided to go for the Pie of the day; which was Chicken and Chorizo and Sun Dried Tomato, with Fries for myself and for Ashleigh, 8oz Rump Steak - cooked medium, accompanied by Chunky Chips, Mushroom and Shropshire Gold Onion Rings. My dish was sensational, the pie was perfectly cooked, golden in colour and once I delved into the pastry crust the filling oozed out revealing the flavoursome contents inside. The chicken and chorizo were bursting with taste, an added kick came from the sun dried tomatoes, and this combined with the creamy sauce made for an amazing pie and one of the best dishes I have sampled, a fantastic course. Ashleigh’s steak was cooked exactly as requested – medium, keeping all of the juicy, tenderness, with amazing flavour in every bite. The chunky chips were brilliant, accompanied with the tasty mushrooms, plum tomato and onion rings making this another fantastic course.

e Plume of Feathers...

Eat, Drink, Meet,

As soon as we arrived we were instantly very impressed with the spacious outdoor seating area, perfect for eating out on a hot summers day, ideal to sit back and relax and take in the views.

My finance Ashleigh and I decided to travel to the Plume of Feathers in the picturesque village of Harley which sits between Much Wenlock and Cressage, just at the foot of the stunning Wenlock Edge.

and Party...

We entered into the bar area and were welcomed by a gentleman who showed us to our table in the fabulous restaurant, which embraces its very traditional surroundings yet it has a modern kick mixed in for good measure. We were handed the extensive food and drink menus and were very impressed with the variation of options available on both. We decided to stick to a diet coke, even though the wine menu was very tempting, with wines from all around the world. Another nice detail was the water that was placed on table- I love little touches like that.

Once we had surveyed the menu, we decided to order Smoked Haddock Risotto, Poached Hens Egg Yolk with Parmesan Crisps for Ashleigh and Pan Seared Scallops, Crisp Belly Pork, Black Pudding Mousse & Jus for myself. Ashleigh’s starter was very impressive, she wasn’t sure what to expect but the combination of flavours were sensational, cooked to perfection and the poached hen’s egg yolk and parmesan crisps were a match made in heaven, a great starter. My dish was equally as impressive, scallops are an unusual choice for me as I’m not much of a fish lover, but these

The Plume of Feathers_Double Page Editorial 08/08/2017 16:28 Page 2

really had me converted. The texture was delightful and as I tucked in, I only grew fonder - they were cooked to perfection and when combined with the crisp belly pork and black pudding mousse they amalgamated into a top-notch starter and certainly one of the best starters I have ever had – fish is back on the menu for me!

For our main courses we chose Slow Cooked Pork Belly, Potato Fondant, Baby Toffee Apple & Sautéed Savoy and for Ashleigh the Lamb Rump, Dauphinoise Potato, and Glazed Chantenay Carrots, Tender Stem Broccoli with a Spiced Carrot Puree. My Belly Pork was a brilliant choice, the top of the pork was crispy yet the pork melted in my mouth and fell apart, the potato fondant was a real treat, the twist was definitely the baby toffee apple – amazing! Ashleigh’s certainly impressed her too, and the presentation was something you would expect to see in any michealin star restaurant, the lamb rump was incredible, juicy and perfectly cooked and it was so good I had to pinch a piece for myself. Accompanied by the dauphinoise potatoes the two worked really well together, the glazed carrots and broccoli and carrot puree making this dish a true winner.

Dessert is undeniably our favourite course whenever we go out to dine. Ashleigh was won over by the Bitter Chocolate Tart, Almond and Orange Macaroon, Orange Curd & Vanilla Ice Cream and I could not resist Apple Tart Fin, Caramelised Granny Smiths, Crisp Butter Pastry and Salted Cameral Ice Cream. Nothing pleases me more than seeing an apple based dessert on the menu but this one really took this to a whole new level. The presentation was astonishing and the taste was even better. The apples were cooked stunningly, the crisp butter pastry was delicious and this along with the ice cream took apple to new dizzying heights - A true classic and made into a modern sensation. Ashleigh’s Chocolate tart was exceptional with flavour galore, the macaroons were sensational and combined with the orange curd and vanilla ice cream they came together to make the perfect end to a perfect meal.

The staff are attentive and friendly. The food was simply stunning- the best three course meal I have ever had the pleasure of devouring and the setting is remarkable. They will be holding an Italian night once a month, which I will definitely be popping along to try but food is served 7 days a week and I would recommend The Plume of Feathers to anyone. Such a fantastic experience and one that I think will be difficult to beat.

Rainbow Film Edit_Double Page Editorial 11/08/2017 13:59 Page 1

6th - 8th October 2017 This year’s festival will be officially opened by the Deputy Mayor of Shrewsbury, Cllr. Peter Nutting.

As always, we have put together an exciting and varied programme of films and events, and are bringing film artists from around the world to celebrate and discuss their art.

Our Friday night opener is "God's Own Country", a brand-new film that is described by “Metro” as “Yorkshire's answer to Brokeback Mountain”, and is receiving fantastic reviews.

"While You Weren't Looking" filmed in a beautiful location in South Africa tells the story of the adopted daughter of a mixed race lesbian couple and how she meets her challenges.

Saar Maoz, who stars in "Who's Gonna Love Me Now?" is travelling from Tel Aviv to talk to us after the screening of his truly captivating life story and answer questions. "The Summer of Sangaile" treats us to the story of 17year-old Sangaile and how she is helped by Auste, a girl of her own age, whom she meets by chance to confront her fears and live her life ambitions.

The graphic sex club encounter of “Théo & Hugo” manages to be romantic too! Set in night time Paris, but not for the faint-hearted! Director Jacques Martineau is travelling from Paris to be with us for a Q and A.

Announcing the 12th Shropshire Rainbow Film Festival!

We welcome also co-lead actor Fawzia Mirza in “Signature Move” to our screening of this moving account of an immigration lawyer juggling the responsibility of being a good Muslim daughter to her recently widowed mother with her new exciting lesbian relationship.

As in previous years, we will also have a varied and interesting programme of UK and international short films, again with audience voting.

This year we’ve squeezed in a lecture on the representation of bisexuality on the screen, and there will be plenty more besides! For full details and up to the minute news visit us at:

THE

Killers UK TOUR 6th November Genting Arena Birmingham The Killers announced a major UK and Ireland tour for November 2017. The tour will follow the release of the band’s upcoming fifth album, Wonderful Wonderful, and its announcement preceded the band’s sell out show in Hyde Park back in July.

Tickets for The Killers’ November shows, which begin in Birmingham on 6th November, go on sale at 9am on Friday, 14th July.

The Killers recently released the video for their dazzling new single, “The Man”, the first taster of the new album. The video was shot in and around Las Vegas and sees the band collaborate with the award-winning director Tim Mattia for the first time.

The new tour announcement also follows on from a spectacular, hit-laden surprise set at Glastonbury which saw the band return to the festival for the first time since their 2007 Pyramid Stage headline show.

Wonderful Wonderful will be The Killers’ first album since 2012’s chart-topping Battle Born. Recorded with the producer Jacknife Lee during album sessions in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, the album is shaping up to be the band’s most sonically forwardthinking record yet; an LP bursting with all of the blazing choruses and arena-filling anthems that make The Killers one of the world’s biggest and most beloved rock bands. Tickets for the Genting Arena date are on general sale from 9am 14 July 2017 from www.theticketfactory.com or by calling 0844 33 88 222 *Calls cost 7p per minute plus your phone company's access charge. FASHION

T

he spirit of femininity is set to usher in this seasons fashion trends, the fluted dress being an ultra-soft way to ‘power-dress’ in the most grown-up of ways. While I’m on the subject of power-dressing, the tailoring trend will hit the masses this Autumn with sharp shoulders, double breasted jackets and slacks becoming an everyday look, even out of the office. Blue hues are a favourite for this season…

Dazzling… We will see a revival of metallic materials, chainmail and sequins, breathing new life into the art of night time dressing up. Shimmering its way to the forefront of the seasons fashion looks is the Seventies era; corduroy and sheepskin and disco glamour with hints of toffee and caramel tones. Soft leather made an appearance in lots of the catwalk collections, with a more feminine feel to it – a lovely way to bring a new dimension to tailored looks.

Boot Camp… Boots rule this season – Cowboy boots will be a major trend – including slouchy styled boots with all-over sparkle and an array of combat boots that even the most peaceful girls will be ready to sport. When it comes to heels, why keep it simple? e new season will see a new twist, with lovely shoes adorned with feathers, embroidery and sparkles. Over the knee boots are great teamed with a jumper dress and it doesn’t matter if they are heeled or flat, leather or suede – the thighs the limit!

Shrewsbury Town In The Community_Double Page Editorial 21/08/2017 09:43 Page 1

SHREWSBURY TOWN

Shrewsbury Town FC’s official charity, “Shrewsbury Town in the Community,” is a great example of what a football club can do for its local people. Founded in 2008, the trust believes that they have the ability to make a difference to the people of Shropshire. By using their profile as the largest and biggest football club in the county, the charity aims to provide a means by which a wide range of people, from young kids to older citizens, as well as fans suffering with varying degrees of disability can get involved in football, keep active and socialise. Whether it’s introducing younger children into football, developing skills from an early age, joining a team and a group of people with similar disabilities and competing alongside them under the Shrewsbury Town FC name, or simply meeting people with a similar outlook and at a similar point in life, the trust has something to offer everyone involved.

Within the four group schemes, “get active,” “training and qualifications,” “football activities” and “schools and colleges,” several programs exist that cater for different groups of people. “Mini kickerz” is helping bring young kids into the game of football, and when paired with the “advanced development” program, which offers progressive coaching to kids between 7-12 years of age, younger children have a great opportunity to enjoy the game of football and hone their skills. There are several disabled football programs that enable people who feel as though they can’t partake in team sport, due to their physical or mental

restrictions, to find a group of people to regularly play with. Cerebral Palsy football, Downs Syndrome football, Power Chair football and PAN football are all on offer at Shrewsbury Town in the Community and are providing a great opportunity for everyone.

There is a heavy push nationally for the inclusion and encouragement of young girls in both football and general fitness. The “girls only fitness” sessions are a way for girls and women to enjoy the benefits of exercise without feeling the pressures of a gym environment. Also on offer are the “Premier League Girls” and “FA Girls Regional Talent Club” courses, which both offer a way for women and girls to become involved with football and to start playing on a regular basis.

There is also a chance for older people to stay active through the “Extra Time” scheme, which offers a weekly opportunity for people over the age of 50 to gather together, socialise and partake in enjoyable sessions of sports such as hockey, rounders and cricket. Over 50’s also have the opportunity to play walking football, which is a great way to keep fit and is a healthy alternative for those who are unable play the full game. Another great program on offer for elderly fans is “Meadow Memories”, which offers the opportunity for elderly people living in care homes to be visited by ex-players to re kindle the memories of the past, making sure that even the most restricted fans of the club are kept engaged and involved. The plethora of generous and thoughtful schemes and courses available to all fans of the club is outstanding, and it results in Shrewsbury Town feeling like a tightly knit and caring community based football club that is willing to include and engage with all age groups, all footballing abilities and a wide variety of people.

The amazing generosity and willingness to help has shown in the successes they’ve had over the last year. The STITC recently received a £1,500 grant from the FA under their "Grow the Game" scheme. This coincided with high praise from the England manager, Gareth Southgate, who said “I am so pleased that Shrewsbury Town in the Community has secured this Grow the Game grant. The club has worked very hard with The Shropshire FA and the Football Foundation to get more local people playing football so that they can enjoy the many physical and mental benefits that come with playing regular sport.”

The grant is a testament to the great work that STITC is doing within its community, and with this money they hope to set up a deaf or hearing impaired football team, which further shows the great work that is being done to cater to all the fans the club have, no matter the severity or type of their disability.

In summary, what Shrewsbury Town Football Club has been doing since 2008 has been nothing short of amazing. The trust, established almost ten years ago, is living proof of the amazing community spirit that both the club and the town share. It has enabled the club to become accessible to people from all walks of life, leaving no fan isolated. Striving to offer equal opportunities for any fan, of any age, of any ability and welcoming all into the family friendly football club, the trust has done extremely well to include everyone in what they are doing.

With the fantastic success that the club has enjoyed since 2015 with the charity, alongside the grant from the FA and recognition of their achievements from the highest reaches of English football, the future only looks bright. I am certain that "Shrewsbury Town in the Community” will continue to set a precedent for all clubs in the country to follow. Hopefully, in the near future every single team in the football league will have a club that is as inclusive, welcoming and caring as Shrewsbury Town Football Club.

I am so pleased that Shrewsbury Town in the Community has secured this Grow the Game grant. The club has worked very hard with The Shropshire FA and the Football Foundation to get more local people playing football so that they can enjoy the many physical and mental benefits that come with playing regular sport. England manager, Gareth Southgate

THREE STAR GAS SERVICE CARE COVER PLAN

That’s a complete Service Care Cover Plan for just £14.08 a month. A breakdown could easily cost you £400 if you need a new part like a heat exchanger. A new radiator could run you £180. 3 FLYING the NEST MOTIV8

YOU’VE BEEN THERE AT THEIR SIDE FOR THE WHOLE OF THEIR LIFE, SO HOW WILL THEY POSSIBLY MANAGE WHEN THEY LEAVE YOUR NEST?

Home, the hub for all of the practical skills that your teenager will need to move out into the world.

As parents we want to ensure that we provide them with all of the know-how to navigate life without needing to rely on others. But we can sometimes underestimate our children’s practical capabilities, right from the start?

Our urge to smooth the path for our kids can sometimes seem to hold back their independence and we struggle to fight the parental instinct, because of our love for them, creating problems for ourselves!

Encourage Independence

Simple things like not picking things up after themselves can be a sign that we have been doing too much for them from an early age. It seems trivial but just by putting your foot down a bit and getting them to ‘muck in’ and put a load of washing in or to take out the rubbish is a start. Just these small things can help make them realise that they share responsibility. Yes, they can soon fall back into old habits when mum and dad take up the slack but when fronted with the responsibility, it will certainly happen – spoon feed it to them, little by little and back off from doing things for them. Simply sowing the seeds of independence by encouraging simple skills from early on, then adding in chores like making a basic snack can help them to grow up. Basic things like shopping for a specific meal can be a challenge, just learning how to plan ahead and get organised is a ‘biggie’.

Shared Living

Although there are benefits from living in a shared house, like splitting the bills, security and friendship, negatives can rear their ugly heads over things like cleanliness, bills and lifestyle differences. Ground rules are essential from the outset about things like shared responsibilities like chores, costs, visitors and parties! It can come as a shock that landlords, lecturers and even the police are not as accommodating as mum and dad are and that there will be challenging situations and people to deal with. All situations will be good and bad, as learning experiences go. The world isn’t perfect so tough situations help us to think about how things can be done differently if something similar pops up again in future.

Page 2 - Flying the nest_Double Page Editorial 14/03/2016 13:20 Page 1

MOTIV8 - Leaving The Nest continued...

The Essentials “Prepare for the road ahead with these essential skills, you will need them to help make the transition into adulthood just a little bit easier. There will be tough times, but by following these simple tips you will find your feet in no time at all... Good Luck!”

Budget

Work it all out and be realistic as cold showers and beans on toast get old – very quickly!

Learn To Cook

Basics are fine, try cooking the family dinner a couple of times a week maybe?

Negotiate

Avoiding unnecessary conflict is a real bonus and most of the time negotiation is the key. It could be as simple as drawing up a rota for chores or agreeing when it’s ok for loud music or parties, for example if someone is trying to study.

Know It

Know what your rights are, but also make sure you check out what your responsibilities are.

Fix It

Learn basics like changing a light bulb (in the dark obviously!) and dealing with a bleeping smoke detector. Little problems, yet major pains when you tripping over things in the dark, listening to an annoying beeping sound.

File It

Keeping your paperwork in order is a must, get a small filing system going.

Do It Youself

No I don’t mean putting up shelves! If you dirty it, mess it up, leave it laying around etc… then YOU will have to clean it up, pick it up and tidy it up – Now do you miss your parents?

Keep Safe

The smoke alarm is a life saver and every house must have at least one working smoke alarm on each floor. Make sure you test it, change the battery and keep it clean. Find out where the mains switch for electricity is, so you can turn it off in an emergency and always find out where the stop-cock is for your water mains supply. Lock up, and don’t leave windows and doors open.

As parents the best gift we can give to our children, as they prepare for adulthood, is the skills to get them through life and they are possibly the most precious things that we can give them.

Asset First Aid Training FIRST AID TRAINING FROM THE PROFESSIONALS...

Asset First Aid Training burst onto the scene back in 2014 after identifying a massive shortfall in First Aid Training in the Midlands. Being a team of qualified front line paramedics with over 20 years experience, Directors Tessa Allmark and Edd Davis, were often asked for advice from friends, family and neighbours. ‘We realised we have a lot to offer the general public and businesses alike.’ Explained Tessa. After much research they found there is no other company locally who provides experienced paramedics to deliver such a wealth of knowledge within their training courses.

The Asset team have varying skills including: BSc (Hons) in Paramedic Science, clinical supervision and mentoring as well as front line experience with the Ministry of Defence as a military paramedic, search and rescue and air ambulance. All instructors hold their level 3 qualification in Education and Training, (this is compulsory from 2015) Asset First Aid Training are also OFQUAL approved and accredited by FAA Awards, with this level of expertise, you know you are in safe hands.

You can rest assured that all Asset instructors have received the highest level of training and have been approved to deliver various courses as shown in the course availability section on the Asset website, providing training in all aspects of First Aid and Health and Safety Compliance in the work environment as well as bespoke First Aid Training courses to suit your needs, to the highest standard.

Not only that, Asset First Aid Training are the only local First Aid Training company to provide a comprehensive after training support to all their course attendees. Asset First Aid Training has recently moved its training centre to the new and exclusive Shrewsbury Town Community Hub onsite at Shrewsbury Town Football Ground where they hold courses for individuals and businesses on either open or closed courses. April also saw Asset attend the first Shropshire Kids festival in Shrewsbury Quarry where they held workshops and demonstrations. wellbeing. And with NHS guidelines saying that babies don’t need to have had their vaccinations before they can swim, baby swimming is the only structured activity you can do together from birth.

Water familiarisation is an equally important aspect. Babies who swim on a regular basis develop a respect for water and can be taught potentially lifesaving skills, such as turning onto their backs or, following a sudden submersion, swimming to the nearest solid object. And these skills kick in from remarkably early on.

Multi-award winning Water Babies lesson across Shropshire, The Black Country & Mid Wales are run by Heidi Hunter-Cope. “At Water Babies, we’ll teach you and your little one confidence and water safety skills from day one,” says Heidi. “And, whilst you are learning new skills all the time, to you and your child you’ll only ever just feel like you’re simply having the best fun!”

With Autumn on the horizon, heralding new beginnings for lots of mums and dads as their little ones head off to school – some for the first time – now’s a good time to start thinking about some new beginnings of your own. And while your little one won’t be starting nursery or school just yet, they’re never too young to start learning!

Baby swimming lessons are not only one of the best things you can do to bond with your baby, they’re also excellent for their development: they help little ones develop learning skills, boost their confidence, improve their co-ordination and enhance their

Welcome to the Oswestry, Shrewsbury and North Shropshire team. I will take your little ones on a dierent adventure every week.

I have always loved performing 'o the stage' and took part in drama in my youth. I have taken my two children, Robert and Charlotte to Pyjama Drama classes and by watching them and other children in the class, I have seen them grow in conďŹ dence and above all having FUN with their imaginations.

After being a stay at home mum I wanted a role working with children and I am very interested in child psychology and truly believe that preschool children coming to Pyjama Drama will help shape and beneďŹ t their formative years that are some of the most important developmental years of their lives. The sessions are designed for your child's age range with music, play and drama where you and your child can lose yourselves in the world of imagination. We love to see children sing, laugh and play and see their imaginations ourish. For more information call me on 01691 898508 or drop me an email: janel@pyjamadrama.com.

Helping Shropshire GET FIT

With Curtis John Hopkins...

The Hype is pleased to introduce our new regular fitness expert Curtis John Hopkins from Pace Health Club in Telford.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME...

Hi my name is Curtis John Hopkins your local fitness expert. I have over 10 years’ experience in the health and fitness industry. Of the last 10 years I have trained over 1000 clients working for some of the Uk biggest gym company’s Iv owned my own personal training company in Asia training professional athletes, royals and celebrities. And my methods never change. Work hard! Have fun!

My journey into fitness started at age 3 with martial arts. That is what lead me to Asia. At 19 years of age I packed up and moved to Thailand to pursue a career in Muay Thai. I had 6 professional high profile fights before suffering a major injury which meant I could not compete at that level again. Undeterred I focused on my next challenge helping athletes train and prepare for their fights. This grew Into Thailand and Malaysia’s premier personal training company training clients from all over the world in southeast Asia’s best 5* hotels.

Now im back in the Uk managing Pace Health Club in Telford and running my personal training business. I believe fitness should be for everyone! And my aim is to get Shropshire fit! So lets do it!

I want to get Shropshire fit so together lets do it. Here are some simple tips that will get you started. I will be with you over the next 12 months and together we will achieve your goals!

Ready

SET Let’s Go 1) Let’s set a goal! Im not reinventing the wheel here, its simple. Set a short term goal and a long term goal. For example “ I will join a gym, I want to lose 5 stone”. Shout about it let people know your goals be proud of them. Its amazing how supportive people will be and the help they can provide. Plus you will be accountable. No one wants to be known for as the guy who talks but does not deliver. So lets set a goal and achieve it!

2) Make it fun! Fitness should be fun. Do something you enjoy there is no reason doing something you hate, its just not sustainable. Don’t get me wrong there will be elements of training that will be uncomfortable but always remember your goal this should be your motivation to push you through these difficult elements. Train with a buddy, have a laugh, put the world to rights and work hard! 3) Keep it simple! I will keep this brief but will talk in more depth on training in my next article. I’m a big believer in a simple, effective and realistic training programme so many trainers try to show of the latest fitness craze or workout techniques because it looks cool! No! let’s keep it simple compound or multi joint movements, for example squats, deadlifts, press ups ect. Moves that work lots of different muscles. This has loads of benefits improve strength, burn fat and it will also help you to develop a functionally fit body. This mixed with a bit of H.I.T cardio will cut down training time and allow you to achieve results fast.

4) Lets go! Its time to start now! Get of the sofa, put your trainers on and lets make it happen. Pace health club Telford offers a free personal training session and a free 6 week training programme with every membership. So no excuse we will be with you every step of the way and together we will achieve your goals. Call 01952210700 for more information or drop us an email cmtelford@pacehealthclub.co.uk

Rachel Nicholas Says Yes to the Dress!

Rachel joined her Slimming World group in October 2015 after getting engaged to her now husband. She had always struggled with her weight since early teens and had tried Slimming World at home which was successful but unfortunately she was unable to maintain her weight loss and started slowly regaining it. “I’d got to the point where I was very unhappy with my weight and I knew that if I didn’t do something soon I could be facing all sorts of health problems. I just wanted to focus on how I could make my future as bright as possible and knowing how Slimming World had worked for me in the past I thought I’d be brave and join a group. I was really nervous about joining a group because it was very scary admitting that I needed help but little did I know what a difference that group would actually make!”

Rachel was so relieved to receive a warm welcome when she joined her group and was instantly put at ease knowing she’d made the right choice to join Slimming World. She went on to lose 7 ½ lb in her first week and continued to lose weight steadily. She said at first she couldn’t believe how much food she could eat whilst still losing weight and was unlike any diet she’d heard of before. “Slimming World teaches you how to get the right balance of different foods and allows you to have treats such as chocolate which I absolutely love!” Rachel has since got to target and says how it has changed her life completely. “I feel so much healthier and have so much more

energy than ever before.” She got to target in July 2016 and has been at target for a year now whilst enjoying lots of social events, getting married going on honeymoon. “ Slimming World is a great way to enjoy your favourite foods whilst remaining healthy. I still continue to go to my group and I think that has made the difference in keeping to my target. Even though I feel much more in control of my weight now there are always going to be times where it’s harder to lose weight/maintain your weight and I know I can rely on my consultant and group to help keep me focused.”

Her next challenge is taking on her own group and becoming a Slimming World Consultant! “I really want to support others achieve their goals and help people in the same way that I have been. I know what a struggle it can be to lose weight and also how difficult it can be to maintain that weight once you’ve lost it but Slimming World has given me the tools to do this so I would really love to pass on these tools to anyone who needs my help.”

Rachel has just relaunched the Slimming World Group at Mount Pleasant Primary School in Shrewsbury which is every Wednesday at 5:30pm and 7:30pm and she is excited to start helping others on their weight loss journeys. Please contact Rachel on 07743194371 or 01743 243759 or via email: rmnicholas89@gmail.com for more details.
