e Review

La Lanterna - Shrewsbury by Luke Smith

On a crisp winter evening, my wife Ashleigh and I decided to head to Shrewsbury town centre, returning to La Lanterna, to see if the very high standards remained at this authentic Italian restaurant based at e Old Vestry, which is very much a little piece of Italy in the heart of Shrewsbury. It was Ashleigh's first visit and on entering she was instantly impressed with the fabulous Italian memorabilia adorning the restaurant and the gentle music playing in the background which helps to create the perfect setting for a lovely evening. We were welcomed by our waiter for the evening, and also said a quick hello to owner Alfredo Pensa, as the restaurant was filling up quickly. e restaurant seats 33 people and offers an impressive dining booth for those celebrating a special occasion. We were handed the extensive drinks menu, but decided to stick to diet cokes and some fresh bread whilst we gazed over the menu. For my starter I decided to go for the special of the month - Sautéed mushrooms and bacon in a Rosemary and garlic, smoked Mozzarella crouton topped by Parma ham. Ashleigh opted for the Bruschetta Al Pomodoro - Two pieces of toasted garlic bread topped with chopped tomato, basil and red onion. e restaurant was filled with couples, families and groups of friends, and everyone seemed to really be enjoying this special eatery.

La Lanterna offer two for £10 on a ursday night and as well as a lunch time menu and are fully licenced. e team deserve all of the recognition they receive, doing their upmost to cater to all of your needs -nothing is too much trouble.

Before we knew it our starters came out and my goodness they exceeded our expectations. Mine was full of flavour, the ingredients worked really well together with the mozzarella and balsamic vinegar melting in my mouth and the crouton was excellent - the perfect start to my evening. Ashleigh was equally impressed. As a garlic bread lover she was in heaven and she loved how the tomato, basil and red onion complimented each other. We were excited for our main courses to arrive. e menu boasts an array of dishes and there is definitely something for everyone. I went for the Arrabbiata Con Bacon - Penne in a hot tomato sauce, chillies and bacon. Ashleigh went for the Lasagne – I was interested to see if it would be up to the challenge of impressing Ashleigh, as she is a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to lasagne, having sampled many whilst in Italy - this if

anything could of been the ‘making or breaking’ of the evening. She was very impressed with it and said it was simply sensational, full of flavour and excellent texture. Mine was again equally as impressive, the pasta cooked impeccably, and the hot tomato sauce and chillies meant it was bursting with flavour. You could taste the freshness of the ingredients, and my favourite – bacon, this dish was a winner for me. A brief recess was required before "I Dolci" - dessert of course. One of my favourites from my previous visit was the dessert platter and I was really pleased to see it was still on the menu. Alex, who was very helpful, explaining all the dishes, arrived with the collection of different cakes which includes homemade Tiramisu, Cheesecake, Amaretto cake, Truffles and ice cream or sorbet. ere were so many to choose from, we decided to share the Amaretto cake and Chocolate truffle. e Amaretto cake was fantastic and the chocolate truffle was rich and sumptuous, the perfect end to a lovely evening. We were even given a complimentary Limoncello to finish off. La Lanterna offer two for £10 on a ursday night and as well as a lunch time menu and are fully licenced. e team deserve all of the recognition they receive, doing their upmost to cater to all of your needs -nothing is too much trouble. Most of all the food is truly sensational and we will be returning very soon. Grazie!

Emma & Oli Jones of JOS events say ‘we are absolutely delighted to be taking over this wonderful, well established fair albeit in sad circumstances. We hope to put our own stamp on the fair without comprising its integrity & the excellent reputation built up by amulet over many years.

We will be honouring any bookings already made so please get in touch. Nothing will be changing this year other than we have lowered public admission, added a third date & have introduced our popular ‘trade free with card’ and early admission. We plan on using innovative marketing ideas & experience to increase the volume of traders & visitors to this excellent, well positioned venue in the heart of Shropshire.’

Artificial Lawn JC Garden Services_Full Page Bleed New 11/02/2019 16:16 Page 1

e Low-Maintenance Garden Installing Artificial Lawns...

I

f you’d like a beautiful garden without the maintenance that comes with it, artificial grass is a great option. With that real-grass look it's an excellent grass alternative for low maintenance gardeners. Ideal for small/medium gardens, there's no need to water it in dry weather and the artificial turf is porous so won't have puddles in the rain. It also offers greater wear and weather resistance than normal grass. I had been struggling with my garden for some time, as with both my husband and I working, there just wasn’t enough hours in the day – plus we both hate gardening, which is a definite problem. In spite of this we both actually love to sit outdoors when the weather allows, so we had to opt for a low maintenance garden. I decided to remove some old decking and replace it with a limestone patio but it was the remaining area that needed sorting out desperately. Josh Cartwright from JC Garden Services specialises in laying artificial grass, so I gave him a call to see if he could come and take a look for me. He

JC

Garden Services

measured up and explained what he would need to do to get everything ready to install the lawn, plus he also brought along a sample of the artificial grass to show me. ere are hundreds of different grasses available in many different shades and lengths, some of which are excellent and some which are not so good. Once work commenced it was an extremely quick process. e area was dug out and levelled off. A wood work frame is measured and fitted and once this was done, barrow after barrow of MOT stone is laid and compacted using a wacker plate. is creates a good solid base on which to lay the grass, but it also provides good drainage to the area. A layer of sand was then laid to create a bed for the grass to sit on and on top of this a heavy duty weed control was added to prevent weeds growing through the artificial grass. e grass was then rolled out into place, and fixed into place with special grass nails. e whole thing took two and a half days from start to finish. I am so pleased with the finished result, I finally have the garden I have always wanted and it is ready to go whenever I am – Roll on summer!!

Now the summer is coming to a close, its a good time to start thinking about how you are going to care for your skin throughout the autumn and winter months.

So, what are the ideal treatments to have throughout the autumn and winter months to ensure our skin is healthy and looking even better next summer?

w Juvederm Volite

Juvederm Volite is the world’s first ever dermal filler that actually improves the hydration and quality of your skin. It effectively smooths and hydrates whilst simultaneously improving the texture, tone and brightness - improving skin health from within. Volite contains Hyaluronic Acid, a naturally occurring molecule made by our bodies that is responsible for water retention in our skin. Volite improves hydration and elasticity by stimulating your body’s own collagen production, leading to an improvement in overall skin quality. Volite can be used to smooth, hydrate and increase elasticity in the skin on your face, neck, decolletage and hands. A single treatment will leave you with smoother, radiant and hydrated skin. Results typically last 9-12 month. From £395.

SHIFNAL

LASER HAIR REMOVAL

w Laser Hair Removal

Humans have had a problem with hair for thousands of years. Plucking, waxing and needle epilation are all temporary and needle epilation is only capable of treating one hair at a time.

Rachel & Helen

Excess hair may be the result of medical conditions, but the pressure to remove it may be cosmetic. Cultural norms and peer group pressure often require the removal of hair in certain regions such as the face, axillae (armpits), legs and bikini line for women, and the chest and back for men. Our Laser hair removal treatment is 10 times faster than standard IPL. It is clinically-proven, safe and effective, giving long-term removal of unwanted hair and is effective on all skin types. Treatments start at just £30. Offer! Buy 5 sessions and get the 6th session free.

w eDS Dermastamp

eDS DERMASTAMP

The multi-award winning eDS dermastamp microneedling treatment is a firm favourite of ours. Using medical grade, German engineered microneedles, the device produces thousands of microneedle columns in the skin, which in turn stimulates the skin to naturally regenerate and repair itself. This treatment is idea for the treatment of fine lines around the delicate eye area and results are not only smoother, brighter rejuvenated skin, but it can also lead to an improvement in the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks. Single treatments start at just £120.

w Sun protection and SPF

We often think of protecting our skin from UVB when its sunny, but damaging UVA, infrared-A and visible light radiation is present everyday, all year round. They penetrate the cloud and even glass. High energy visible light (HEV) from our mobile phones and computer screens are also contributing to premature skin ageing. Therefore it is really important not to neglect your skin when it comes to protecting it. We recommend wearing a factor 50 SPF everyday throughout the autumn and winter months, such as Heliocare 360° which is proven to protect the skin from UVA, UVA and Infrared-A. Park Street Clinic are official stockists of Heliocare and Heliocare 360°.

DENIM...

Spring is in the air - you can smell it, right? With it comes the season’s new trends, which always feel like a breath of fresh air, but especially when it comes to good old denim. Jeans never really go out of fashion but spring brings a change in styles like pretty embroidery, which instantly brightens up an otherwise plain pair of jeans and pretty hem details like frills or ties. This year you will also see the addition of front pin tucks and ribbon detailing which is really pretty, nostalgic and cute - all at the same time. Whether it’s bleached, tiedyed or frayed - Denim is going to be everywhere.

WIDE & STRAIGHT LEG JEANS…

One of my favourite trends for this season is the return of wider leg jeans. Straight-leg, vintage inspired jeans with low rise, or rather worn low slung, are very flattering. Rather than those extra-low-rise skinny jeans of yesterday, these sit on the hips comfortably. The wider leg gives a sense of more freedom and they are the kind of jeans you can wear all day, every day, no matter what you are doing as they are

SITTING PRETTY... An easy way to get spring started is by embracing some of the standout styles of Spring/Summer 2019 for a fresh, ontrend update. Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice, shares some sofa trends that are set to be big for the upcoming season.

1. CLEVER DETAILING...

Details – they can define a trend or add a final flourish to a space. “With the enthusiasm for bolder looks on the rise, interesting details are definitely here to stay,” Rebecca says. “Elements like ruching and rolled edges give an extra boost of refinement to furniture especially sofas, highlighting fine workmanship and adding interest. A great middle ground between distinctive looks like the maximalism of Art Deco and Scandi minimalism, playing with a range of smart, stylish details is a clever way to spruce up an interior. A sofa with interesting details is a quiet statement-maker, a classic that will always stay chic. This trend is incredibly versatile and transferable across a variety of interiors – experiment with timeless classics like button-back cushions and brass legs, to modern touches such as contrasting piping and unique silhouettes.”

Stay Home... 2. CLASSIC, SIMPLE SHAPES...

Minimalist furniture and decor has never gone out of style, and with the ongoing focus on mindfulness and the perennial chic of the signature clean Scandinavian aesthetic, this look is going to keep going strong in 2019. “It’s all about going back to basics, with classic and versatile designs,” says Rebecca. “The aim here is to create a space that’s pared back, yet thoughtful - think strong lines and structured silhouettes. For instance, a modern sofa in classic black leather will lend a cool, yet welcoming feel to the living room. The focus here is a strong centrepiece – go for simple yet bold shapes for a look that’s both classic and interesting. This will really shine when paired with eye-catching, contemporary décor. Opting for a leather finish lends a sophisticated look that’s both versatile and easy to maintain, making it a great foundation that’ll never go out of style.”

3. LUXURIOUS VELVET...

Now for something entirely different - often considered the epitome of luxury and timeless style, velvet reigns supreme as one of the top trends this season. For this latest interpretation, velvet manages to be both retro and modern - think classic Chesterfield sofas updated in bold jewel tones, and modern sofas made cosier with this soft, gleaming fabric. “Velvet sofas are designed to make a statement in the living room,”says Rebecca. “A velvet sofa in a dark colour such as blue or red anchors a light, neutral room and gives it a dramatic contrast. When set against a darker background, such as a grey or black wall, it can add a luxurious, plush pop of colour. A stylish way

4

Standout Sofa Styles for Spring/Summer Pictures: Furniture Choice

to introduce colour and glamour to a space, this finish absolutely shines in an airy, casually elegant space, and also works when playing with darker tones for a punchy, transformative look,” Rebecca says. “In terms of texture, velvet beautifully complements other fabrics and finishes, such as knits and furs, making it easy to entirely change the look and feel of a space, depending on the rugs, pillows and other decor.”

4. ART DECO INFLUENCE...

A look that has inspired countless home makeovers and DIYs, Art Deco returns with a chic new look for 2019- and we predict that it is here to stay. “Colour and contrast are set to be key players in this modern revival,” Rebecca says. “This approach is a perfect way to highlight statement furniture such as Art-Deco inspired sofas – offset cool tones like grey against rich blues for a calm and chic interior. This trend also celebrates the notion that more is more when it comes to decorating, truly embracing maximalist tendencies. Pick out an Art Deco-inspired sofa with graceful curves and tapered legs for a polished look, before layering it with bold hues, prints, and finishes. The result is an space that’s full of personality, and yet will never go out of style. It’s easy for this look to get a little overwhelming, so it’s also good to start off in small doses through printed pillows, or wall art. The beauty of Art Deco is its ability to dazzle as an accent or as a full-blown theme – in smaller doses, it luxes up midcentury and modern Scandi interiors, but it also works for a high-impact, glamorous feel at home.”

Book Worms... A black country girl who loves to read. I recieved this ARC in exchange for an honest review. When this book popped up on NetGalley, I knew I had to request it. I read the first one a while back and fell in love with the writing and author. e story is all about second chances and what will happen if you allow yourself to follow your heart. Ophelia and Kyle have both been hiding a huge secret, and when Kyle comes back to town, they both must decide if what they once had is worth fighting for. What I really enjoyed about Jennifer Probst is how she is able to create extremely likeable characters. I found myself being able to relate to Ophelia and her struggles and concerns, but also to Kyle and what he was going through. She has a great writing style and it’s a real credit how she is able to keep the reader entertained. I certainly couldn’t put the book down and devoured it in one go. Ophelia was the perfect lead character. What I like most about her is how strong and independent she is, and she clearly knows what she wants and will stand her ground. My heart broke for her when she realised that maybe love isn’t enough, and although she loved Kyle, she wasn’t happy so needed to leave and start her own life. I think her greatest weakness is how kind and caring she is. Some may see this as a positive and yes, whilst it’s grea that she will always

go the extra mile to help someone, she sometimes forgets about herself. I didn’t particularly warm to Kyle in the beginning. He was arrogant, selfish and only thought of himself, his own dreams and ambitions. Not only did he allow his relationship to fall apart, he couldn’t see that he was partly to blame. I literally cheered when he finally realised that did play a part in the breakdown of the relationship. I did end up liking Kyle. I loved his character development and you could see how much he loves Ophelia. I really enjoyed them both as romantic leads. I really liked the secondary characters in this book. It was great to reconnect with Mia and Ethan to see how their relationship had flourished. I enjoyed their story, so it was nice to revisit them. Not only is this book about second chances for love and following your heart, it also touches upon family, friendships and finding yourself. I rate this book five out of five stars and urge everyone to go and purchase a copy now. I can’t wait for the third instalment.

Weddi n g Trends FROM RUSTIC CHARM TO BOHO OUTDOORS...  Barn Charm...

Barns are already popular wedding venues, however this year we will see a new style of barn venue. In a move away from the traditional shabby chic vibe, people are opting for a more natural feel, with a minimalistic look which incorporates modern touches like contemporary chairs and simple green and white floral arrangements, to create an elegant and sleek for their wedding day.

PRETTY PEONIES EVERYWHERE... 2019 - e year of the Peony.

The Peony is a popular choice for bouquets but this year you can expect to see them everywhere. This timeless, versatile bloom, which can be crafted into many styles of bouquets, has limited availability though. The main season for them runs from April through to late June. There are some great alternatives for the rest of the year, from garden rose’s to dahlias.

FLOWER POWER

Outdoor Boho Venues...

We are seeing more and more couples going back to nature with outdoor ceremonies and wedding receptions. Farms and tipis are great ways of getting the outdoor feel, whilst having cover if the good old British weather decides to add a splash of rain to the big day. Trendy boho-inspired outdoor weddings are going to see a big increase and the theme may also see a move away from cut flowers to palm trees and potted plants or even small trees.

Lace Facelift...

Lace has always been popular with brides. It’s romantic, luxurious and now has the added bonus of added stretch to traditional lace materials. There are some beautiful lace wedding dresses on the market, with intricate patterns for you to swoon over. Whether you’re after a summery boho wedding dress,or an elegant long-sleeved number, there is now a lace wedding dress for every bride.

Spring is, without a doubt, a beautiful time of year to tie the knot – so many flowers are in bloom, the sun is beginning to shine again, plus the days are starting to get longer.

FLOWER POWER Go big with flowers... Flowers in your hair, on your dress, in the aisle, on your tables, and definitely on your wedding cake. If you’ve dreamt of a garden wedding party all of your life, spring is the time to do it! Go wild with Cherry Blossom, Tulips or even Daisies.

Baby’s Breath is also a really pretty yet inexpensive flower that is perfect for rustic spring weddings.

Inspired Outdr Spaces...

Savour the outdoors this spring!

Home Edit

By Alison Chatten

Icon’s botanical or wave design cushions (from £14.99). And these work well when paired with bright plain cushions.

• Make the most of your space by looking for furniture which is comfortable for different activities. For example, the Icon Oria Beanbag Armchair (from £69.99) is a comfortable seat which is great for relaxing indoors with a book, or for taking outside to snatch some sun.

With spring in the air, it’s time to reclaim your outdoor spaces with decorative patterns, vibrant colours and botanical prints set to be a big trend for 2019. Adaptable pieces that are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use are a great way for snatching any opportunity for some spring sunshine. Alison Chatten, trend expert and head of design at leading British soft seating brand Icon said: “With evenings growing longer and temperatures starting to rise, spring brings a sense of renewal and revitalisation.

“That need to refresh and create brighter, more invigorating surroundings, is leading the trend for vibrant, contrasting colours and floral prints, as well as wave and fan patterns. The Palm House trend continues to be a strong theme, as well as bright clashing Latin American inspired designs – it’s all about bringing energy to your living spaces.”

Here are Alison’s tips for making the most of your outdoor spaces:

• Drawing on colours and themes already in the home, and using these outside, will create the impression of more space by harmoniously bringing the two areas together.

• Brightly painted pieces such as vases complemented with vibrant flowers, clashing colours and patterns are great for bringing life to your outdoor space.

• Go for artistic and casual patterns rather than symmetrical, such as

• Particularly in urban areas, outdoor space can feel a little bleak. So look for pieces that instantly add colour and energy. Floral prints in particular can bring as sense of being closer to nature. • Choose pieces that are water resistant and easy to keep clean. The Icon Spring Summer 19 range uses comfortable, tactile materials which are designed to be wiped clean.

• Footstools and pouffes such as the Oria Eclipse Footstool (from £49.99) are great for adding extra seating, take up less space and can even be used as a side table.

Ways to improve your heart health & fight heart disease...

available to help you succeed so do some research and see what will be the best one to help you quit. A simple method is to reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke over a set period of time. Week 1 you should cut the number of cigarettes you smoke by half, then on the second week, cut the number in half again and keep going each week until the end of week four when you should be able to quit altogether. If you need a little more help, visit your GP for advice and help with quitting for good.

Embarking on a Healthy Heart lifestyle is the best way to improve your heart health and avoid heart disease.

A good place to start when it comes to heart health is with a check-up with your GP. Make an appointment to get your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels checked and whilst you are there, check your weight. If you are overweight, ask for some advice on reaching and maintaining a healthy body weight and be sure to listen to their advice, as it is the first step to being more heart healthy. At the end of the day - your heart is in your hands.

EAT WELL... Switch out unhealthy snacks for raw vegetables and fresh fruits, they reckon if you can make a change and repeat it 21 times, that this new healthy choice will become habit. Stock up the fridge so that you have plenty of good options when you fancy a nibble. It is important to stay well hydrated, try to remember 56 Health & Beauty

to take a bottle of water with you where ever you go, often when we get the urge to eat, we are actually thirsty rather than hungry, so this should help cut down on unneccessary snacking. Avoid too much salt as it can affect your blood pressure and make sure you keep an eye on ‘hidden’ salt in foods they show on food labels as sodium alginate, sodium caseinate, sodium benzoate, sodium hydroxide, monosodium glutamate (MSG), or sodium citrate. GET ACTIVE... Just 15 minutes of jogging, brisk walking or even marching on the spot will help improve your heart health- you can even do it whilst watching TV or a film! Each week add five minutes to your chosen activity until you get to 30 minutes every day of the week.

QUIT SMOKING... Stopping smoking is always going to be on the list of things to improve your heart health. There is a lot of help

CUT CHOLESTEROL... High cholesterol can lead to high blood pressure - which is bad news for your heart. Help to keep cholesterol levels down by eating foods that are low in saturated and trans fats. Lean chicken and turkey, fruits and vegetable, whole grains and low fat or fat free dairy products are all great options to help in lowering cholesterol. HEALTHY WEIGHT... Being over-weight increases your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. To lose weight in a steady, safe way the first step is to do it slowly. Just by reducing the amount of calories you eat by 200300 less per day and adding in 30 minutes of exercise as mentioned earlier, you will slowly see the weight come off.

Earth Day - Plastic Pollution_Double Page Editorial 07/01/2019 11:07 Page 1

Earth Day - 22nd April 2019...

End Plastic Poution Together we can work to end plastic pollution! What You Need to Know About Plastic Pollution

Plastic polution is not only poisoning and injuring marine life, it is disrupting human hormones too. Plastic litters our beaches and landscapes, clogging our waste streams and landfills and the worst part is that the exponential growth of plastics is now threatening the very survival of our planet.

“ We do inherit th not e our ancest earth from ors, we bo r row it from ou r children .” Native A Earth Day Network is merican focusing on fundamentally Proverb changing human attitude and

What Earth Day is Doing About Plastic Pollution?

behavior towards plastics in the hope of bringing about a significant reduction in plastic pollution. The focus of Earth Day 2018 was to End Plastic Pollution and that work continues - to end plastic pollution.

To succeed in this, we need to work towards, and support the adoption of a global framework to regulate plastic pollution by educating and mobilizing citizens across the globe to demand action from governments and corporations alike, to reduce and hopefully end plastic pollution.

By informing individuals and encouraging them to take personal responsibility for the plastic pollution that they generate and asking them to choose to reduce, refuse, reuse, recycle and remove plastics. As well as the individual education of people, it is important to work with universities and schools to educate students about plastic pollution and to work with other organizations and networks to build an effective platform to end plastic pollution by developing resources that others can use.

It is essential to promote the work that cities and local governments are doing to tackle plastic pollution, as it helps spread the word about some of the ways we can reduce the amount of plastic pollution we produce. One of the best ways to do this is to empower journalists across the globe to report on the problem and its emerging solutions.

The Earth Day Network is leveraging the platform of their 50th anniversary in 2020 by working with key constituencies and influencers in building a world of educated consumers of all ages, who understand the environmental, climate and health consequences of using plastics by engaging and activating their global network of NGO’s and grassroots organizations, campus youth, mayors and other local elected leaders, faith leaders, artists and athletes, and primary and secondary students and teachers. They are also supporting events in every continent of the world, to build a global following and activating individuals to join their ‘End Plastic Pollution’ campaigns. Basically they are using the power of Earth Day to elevate the issue of plastic pollution in the global agenda and inspiring and demanding effective action to reducing and controlling it. What You Can Do About Plastic Pollution?

Birds in Winter_Double Page Editorial 07/02/2019 10:44 Page 1

GIVE BIRDS A HELPING HAND...

This Nesting Season After spending the last few months focusing their efforts on making it through the winter, birds now begin to turn their attention to starting a family. Across the country, birds are searching for a mate and beginning to prepare the nests in which they will raise their young. With natural habitats such as trees and hedgerows being lost to development every year and the increase in urban housing, nest boxes are massively becoming more important to many species’ survival. You can help this circle of life by installing a nest box in your garden, providing them with a place to lay their eggs and raise their chicks, as well as allowing you to witness birds raising a family on your doorstep.

So why not give them a helping hand and provide a home for garden birds over the coming months? Even if your garden is small and you only really have space for one box, it all helps! The first thing to consider is the kind of birds you’re hoping to attract. However, having two or three general boxes with different hole sizes to allow for different species can increase your success. Blue, Great and Coal Tits, along with Tree Sparrows and Pied Flycatchers, prefer a 28mm entrance hole, while the larger Nuthatch and House Sparrow need at least 32mm. Robins, Wrens and Blackbirds like the open style nest box. Or you may want to concentrate on specialist species that are in decline, such as House Sparrows and Starlings. There are lots of nest box styles around, but look for those that have drainage holes, natural-looking designs and insulating materials treated with safe preservatives. The entrance holes should also be at a height that doesn’t allow predators to reach in and scoop chicks out. CJ Wildlife nest boxes meet the birds’ key requirements, and they are available in an array of designs and finishes to ensure they look great in your garden. Birds need nests where they feel safe and sheltered, so place yours away from sites such as the top of fences that make life easy

for predators, such as cats and squirrels. Secure it facing north through east to south-east in order to keep out prevailing winds and strong sunlight. As a bonus the early morning sun will gently warm the box after a cold night. Walls tend to be a better choice than trees since cats find it more difficult to scale them, but you can plant dense and prickly bushes around trees to deter them if you haven’t got suitable walls. The ideal height for a nest box is generally accepted as between 1.5 and 5.5 metres, but preferably higher than 3 metres if your garden is frequented by cats. If possible, place a nest box close to vegetation, such as climbing plants, as this provides both cover and makes things easier for young birds when they leave the nest for the first time. Another good point is to avoid putting your boxes too close to feeding stations as the regular presence of other birds of the same species in their territory will make the parent birds focus on driving out competitors rather than feeding their young.

It’s tempting to want to stuff your new nest boxes with potential nest material, but birds prefer to find their own. You can give them a subtle helping hand though, by putting things like dog hair and hay around the garden for them to find. You can also buy special organic nesting wool, which you can offer from a Fiesta or Apple Nester so the birds can help themselves. Once your box is installed, you may need to be patient. Birds can’t afford to be laid back about where they raise their young and it may take a little while before they accept your box as a suitable site. It is unusual for a wellpositioned, properly designed nest box to go unused for long, and the boxes are also a valuable roosting site at other times of year. If you’re lucky, you might even attract some birds to raise more than one brood in your box, as House Sparrows, Robins and many more will nest more than once during each year’s breeding season. Remember, you can give birds a massive helping hand during nesting season by providing them with a regular supply of food. Not only do adult birds have to find food for themselves, but exert more energy doing the food run for their chicks too as well as finding the right food for them. Garden feeders can make a real difference at this time of year filled with high energy foods. Live food such as mealworm is particularly important, as it provides the vital proteins young chicks need to grow.

Last year the cameras drummed up a lot of interest on social media from people who are new to bird watching as well as the dedicated ornithologists. They were also a big hit with parents and children, and this year we hope they will be just as popular. There is always something going on, whether it is a Little Owl’s lunchtime feast, a new egg or some adorable allopreening.Watch the live webcams to catch all the action and the best time to watch is from the end of February until the 1st July when the most activity will take place. You can also follow CJ Wildlife on Twitter @CJWildlife and Facebook to keep you up to date with all the latest news from the nests. Ford Fiesta ST-3 3dr.

SE Nav.

“e thrill of speed - one of the twentieth century inventions that shines out like a beacon of progress - appears at present to be under threat from many directions...” Getting around our crowded island has never been so frustrating. Decades of under investment in infrastructure has resulted in near gridlock. Some say it's scandalous while others would have us dress like colourful insects in helmet and lycra and pedal our way through puddles, oblivious to the queues of cars behind. What is certain is that as cars have got better, the same cannot be said for carriageways. These reflections were prompted at the wheel of the new 3 Door (You can have 5 doors) Fiesta ST-3 If ever a car deserved to be allowed its proper use, unfettered by speed bumps, speed cameras, 'smart' lane allocation, congestion, potholes and all the rest, it's this fabulous Ford. Give it a decent road and it will turn every journey into a delight. If it proves one thing it's this: that when it comes to motoring machinery the modern driver has never had it so good. So it is that the Fiesta ST reaffirms a policy of sporting intent long associated

with Ford, representing the latest incarnation of that sporting philosophy. It's a hot Fiesta that is significantly better than the previous version. No wonder it has been voted 'New Car of the Year 2019' in some surveys. The technology has taken a quantum leap. Nowhere moreso than under the bonnet. Gone is the old four cylinder engine and in its place a cutting-edge 200 PS 1.5 three cylinder unit that is quite magic in its capability. You would never know it unless you were told but at less than half throttle and between 1200 and 4500 revs one cylinder shuts down and takes a break. But select sport or even track mode, drop down a gear and floor the throttle and...kaboom! You are on the way to nearly 145 mph. 'Gas guzzler is it?' I hear you ask. Well frankly it's not. Ford claim over 47mpg overall - but to drive for economy in one of these is to completely miss the point. Believe me: it is the dusty cobwebs deadliest enemy. It's a live galvanisation of inanimate metal, a quicksilver twinkling of dashing performance. But at the

same time, oh so civilised. As safe as houses but as dynamic as a supple heptathlete, capable of coping with every challenge.

Technical types look away now. Yes, there's a superabundance of cuttingedge engineering parcelled in this rapid package. But frankly my dears, I don't give a monkey-wrench. For me the proof of the pudding is in the eating - or in this case the treating of the driver to an invigorating dose of motoring ozone. This sharp-looking road rocket makes the years fall away. It's a recipe for rejuvenation if ever there was one. Batman never hopped into the Batmobile with anything like the enthusiasm I felt. Neighbours had never seen me so animated - not even when beating off the bailiffs.

Nestling into the heated Recaro seats in the well specified cabin of the top spec. £23,170 ST-3 version (ST-1 starts at under £19,000) with its 8 inch touchscreen and numerous other adjuncts to comfort and convenience, I

fired up that splendid engine and the reverberation of its potency set up an expectant tingle of anticipatory pleasure. A lovely quick throw 6 speed gear change, a well-weighted clutch and we're away. All that was needed was an empty open road - so it was a dawn start.

The difference between old-style and modern performance cars is this: modern cars feel docile and tractable but give them their head and they'll knock the old sort into a cocked hat. (An E Type would be left in this Fiestas dust!). Every now and then there came subtle indications that I was driving something special. Yes it's firmly sprung but with a more compliant ride than the previous model, yes, it takes bends as if on rails. But only when conditions permitted me the licence to thrill myself

did I induce an involuntary gasp of astonishment as that wonderful new engine catapulted the ST forward. Oh yes. This is one seriously quick fun car.

At the same time you feel confident that Ford have got it right, for the car always feels glued to the road, subservient to your every need. Soon the straight road ended in a sharp turn. I zipped round the bend, impressed with my own artistry; that is before I realised the car, not the driver, deserved the credit. With a car like this, compromises are inevitable. Yes, it's a firm ride and no, it won't win acclaim for economy. But it is very civilised, with all the extras todays drivers demand. And for the money you really won't find a better class of performance motoring. All we need now is a better class of highway. The better

to ensure that in tomorrows world we aren't robbed of these motoring thrills, courtesy of far-seeing Ford and the Fiesta ST.

As I bobbed along, enraptured by the carefree felicity of the Fiestas road dynamism, I thought 'This is one of the finest handling superminis available today?' And no. I'm not in pay of the manufacturers: just in the service of fine motoring.
