La Corallina Restaurant & Coffee, Shrewsbury... Authentic Italian feel and delicious food...
As a lover of Italian food I was delighted to hear that a new restaurant, La Corallina had opened on Milk Street, Shrewsbury. After a busy day in the office, myself and my colleague Eileen decided to head over to see if it actually lives up to its own claim of being an authentic Italian restaurant serving only premium quality fresh food.
Upon entering the restaurant we were both very impressed with the light and traditional feel to the restaurant. You could see that the owners had gone to great lengths to achieve this and it’s very much paid off, they even have a traditional pizza oven, which came all the way from Tuscany. We were welcomed in by our friendly Italian waitress and were seated by the window, which afforded a great view of the Town Centre and impressive church.

We ordered drinks and were left to peruse the menus. There was a wide variety of dishes that were on offer from pasta dishes and pizza’s to anti-pasta to name but a few.
As there were so many tempting and delicious sounding options available, I decided to ask the waitress what she would recommend and as I couldn’t decide on what to have she suggested that I tried both dishes, so I did!
Panzarotti Napoletani; this is a very popular dish that originated from Naples, consisting of fried mashed potatoes with mozzarella and gana, and my absolute favorite dish of the night and Arancini Di Riso; fried balls of rice, tomatoes, peas and more yummy mozzarella. Eileen who very much enjoys seafood ordered Antipasto La Corallina; fried anchovies, calamari, shrimp and squid, which she really was very pleased with and commented on just how deliciously tasty it all was.
After a short wait our mains arrived, Eileen chose to continue with the seafood theme and ordered Linguine All’astice. This beautifully presented, plentiful dish of lobster, shallot, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, parsley, tomato, cooked in white wine was quite simply stunning. The portion was huge and much to Eileen’s disappointment she couldn’t finish it all. I ordered Pollo Alla Milanese; succulent breaded chicken breast that was served with a creamy, garlic mushroom sauce. I was delighted with this dish and the mushroom sauce in particular was amazing, complimenting the chicken extremely well and a generous helping of fries to finish the dish off perfectly. The dessert menu had a great choice and looked very tempting but unfortunately we just couldn’t fit any in.
La Corallina really do live up to their claim of being a truly authentic Italian dining experience, and above all, delicious, plentiful Mediterranean cuisine at reasonable prices - Bellissimo!

Cocktail time means Chiquitos time!
Chiquitos, Shrewsbury is a pleasantly themed, bright and well-attended operation with friendly servers and comfortable seating. There are even branded sombreros lying about in case you want to dress up as a bandito with your amigos and as it was Saturday we did!
We were here for something special, something Saturday’s are made for and that something was COCKTAILS! And this is something that you will find in abundance at Chiquitos, from classics like the Mojito and Margarita to some summer stunners like Summer Sangria and Berry Sling. We chose a Mock-jito for me as I was driving but the others went to town with Classic Mojito (with ginger beer), Texan Twister; a fruity blend of melon liqueur, pomegranate syrup and fresh lime juice, Raspberry Rum Collins, with Old J spiced rum, raspberry puree, fresh lime juice and a dash of soda – what a way to kick off the evening – Kerry said that the Texan

We ordered some starters of Cantina Mushrooms, Halloumi Skewer, Sweet Chorizo Croquettes and Empanadas, all of which were glorious. The hot and spicy cantina Mushrooms fuelled my husband’s desire for another cocktail, not that he needed an excuse of course. My croquettes were brilliant also, with a wonderful jalapeno jelly which was divine.
More cocktails followed in the form of a Berry Sling, from the summer selection, Dark ‘n’ Stormy, which is the national drink of Bermuda, with Gosling’s black seal rum, fresh lime juice and ginger beer (need I say more?) and Long Island Ice Tea for my husband, Stef. A classic cocktail with Bacardi rum, tequila, vodka and Bombay Sapphire gin, orange liqueur, lemon juice and sugar syrup, all topped up with Pepsi – I was going to be carrying him home!

The main course was met with enthusiasm, there was Prawn & Chorizo Skewers, Southern Fried Chicken & BBQ Pulled Pork, Baked Enchiladas and that must have at any Mexican: the Chimichanga! The menus are extensive, with loads of options and there is also the new ‘Street Food’ selection; think tapas but Mexican, where you can choose 3 for £12.95 or 6 for £23.95, which is a great way of sampling a few dishes in one evening.
The desserts are too god to miss out on, so we indulged with some delicious Churros, which I adore! They are drenched in cinnamon sugar and come with a generous dollop of chocolate sauce for dipping. As well as this we had Mexican Mess (think Sombrero made of cinnamon tortilla, strawberry, chocolate & cream), Golden Nugget Cheesecake and of course another cocktail sneaked in, in the form of a Choc Orange Dessert Cocktail, made with chocolate ice cream, Eristoff vodka and orange liqueur – Arriba!! From the moment you walk through our door and put on your sombrero, you can expect a warm welcome, lively atmosphere and a burst of fantastic flavours, all together creating a vibrant and laid-back fiesta feeling to sit back and enjoy with your amigos…

It’s sweet, innocent, and yummy and will transport you back to the endless summer of your childhood. Our flavours are a little more exciting than just cola or blueberry though, they’re fun, colourful and laced with nostalgia like our melon freeze made with citrus vodka, melon liqueur and fresh lemon. We all know sharing is caring so why not try our slushy perfect for two – a Pina colada slushy with a strawberry margarita slushy on top! If milkshakes are your thing we are the home of killer milkshakes from the white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake flavour to an Oreo overload. We do smaller milkshakes for little’uns and all are available to takeaway.
When the sun goes down the summer vibe doesn’t stop as we’ll be serving up cocktails until midnight throughout the week and 1am on weekends with table service every night. Expect all-time favourite classics and signature cocktails with a 19th century twist.

All of the dishes are created from scratch, in-house even down to the amazingly crunchy yet delightfully fluffy chunky chips; using locally sourced produce wherever possible and you can taste the difference in every bite! The restaurant is open to all; you don’t have to be a guest at the boutique hotel to enjoy the fabulous food on offer. You can start the day with a Full English Breakfast for just £5 or you could enjoy a delicious meal before taking in a show at the Theatre Severn with the Pre-Theatre Menu, which is available daily between 5-6.30pm, offering 2 courses at £11.50 or 3 courses at just £14.00.

We went along on a Wednesday evening and parked in the private car park to the rear and were greeted warmly by the attentive staff. The restaurant owners David and Donna are on hand to ensure everything runs like clockwork, and it does! We were seated in the cosy restaurant and given the menus to study. There is a good range of dishes to choose from with starters from just £4.95 and main courses from £8.95, the prices are very reasonable. There is an extensive wine menu as well as a range of real ales, continental lagers and interesting soft drinks too. I opted for a soft drink and my colleague Andrew decided that a bottle of Peroni was in order.
For our starter we decided to try the Antipasti Board (Sharer £10.95) – A tasty selection of cold meats, olives, sun blushed tomatoes and bread, which really wet our appetite for the main courses of 8oz Fillet Steak (£18.95), medium, served with those amazing chunky chips I mentioned earlier, cherry vines tomatoes, field mushroom and beer batter onion rings for myself and Rump of Lamb (£13.95) served with potato gnocchi, braised cabbage, sugar snap peas and a black olive jus. The Fillet Steak was cooked perfectly and the onion rings are probably the best I’ve ever had, with a light and crispy batter. Andrew was delighted with his Lamb which was tender and flavoursome and the cabbage was the perfect partner, enhancing the dish brilliantly.
We were offered dessert menus and after the previous two courses, there was no chance that we were going to refuse. Homemade Lemon Crème Brulee (£5.45) served with pistachio brittle and Homemade Chocolate Brownie (£5.45) served with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream were our winners and they really were glorious. My crème brulee was bursting with lemony goodness and Andrew’s brownie was stunning, even the ice cream was a cut above most on offer. The Silverton have perfected quality, home-made food and this alongside their excellent service and reasonable prices places them firmly in the ‘must visit’ category, amongst the finest eateries in Shrewsbury.

Restaurant Review We are already big fans of Frankie & Benny’s New York/Italian restaurant which has branches in both Telford and Shrewsbury, there is always such a relaxed atmosphere when we go that we never fail to have a great time. They have recently had a change around in the Telford restaurant with a new seating plan as well as new menus to choose from.
We settled into our cosy booth and goggled the extensive menus, my husband’s eyes regularly being drawn to the dessert menu to the side of us, I could tell he was planning ahead but to start things off in traditional Frankie & Benny’s style we ordered some dough balls with garlic butter and spicy jalapeno cheese sauce, along with a Budweiser, which always go down a treat. To start we chose from the new menu options; Meatballs Italiano – Beef and pork meatballs with

Neapolitan sauce, salsa rossa, topped with lemon zest and served with freshly bakes rosemary bread and Classic Bruschetta Napoli – crisp ciabatta bread topped with homemade bruschetta mix, torn mozzarella and fresh basil. Stephan was very impressed with the
meatballs, which were tender, juicy and very flavoursome as was my bruschetta.
Another new menu option caught my eye - New Jersey Chicken; a generous chicken breast topped with crispy bacon and pulled pork, dished up with sizeable dollops of BBQ and Jalapeno cheese sauce, plus onion rings, corn on the cob, coleslaw and house fries and for Stephan the Cajun Chicken Calzone was too tempting to resist, I did wonder if he was going to fit in that huge dessert if he wasn’t careful. I was delighted with my New Jersey Chicken, which looked great but tasted amazing, even if three different meats feels a little greedy, the crunchy bacon with its perfect saltiness combined magically with the pulled pork and tender chicken. I couldn’t eat all of the fries, which were nice and crispy but the cheese sauce was the bomb – absolutely

brilliant. Stephan’s Calzone didn’t disappoint either, bursting with chicken, mushrooms, red onion and mozzarella and smothered in a generous dollop of rich Neapolitan sauce but he was looking full…
He gazed at the ‘Godfather’ dessert on the front of the menu and I could see him weighing up if he could squeeze it in or not, eventually conceding, he ordered a Raspberry Trifle Sundae, which was still a towering glass with layers of vanilla ice cream, red berry compote, panna cotta and honeycomb pieces topped with a crown of whipped cream. I decided to go for the ‘Coffee & Cake’ option which for £3.95 net s you a choice of coffee and mini slice of citrus tart, which although small is bursting with lemony goodness! Frankie & Benny’s are hard to beat. There is a great atmosphere, brilliant service and loads of menu choices, including a 2 course midweek evening menu for £11.95, which is brilliant; you can safely say that you will never leave feeling hungry.
Just remember, if you have a smaller appetite you may want to order from the lighter options, especially if you really want to fit in that special dessert…

The Ludlow Food Festival is back in 2016 with a stellar line up of chefs and attractions, perfect for food lovers everywhere.
Great British Menu winner Richard Bainbridge will be taking to the stage as will Masterchef: The Professionals winner Mark Stinchcombe. If that wasn’t enough how about Raymond Blanc development chef Adam Johnson, his right hand man on TV series Kitchen Secrets. More names will be announced before the festival. Of course there will be some amazing producers exhibiting inside the castle, 180 to be precise with more setting up for the Sunday Market. The global phenomenon that is the ‘Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year’ Exhibition will be on display at the Ludlow Assembly Rooms throughout the weekend. Since 2011 30,000 images have been submitted for judging and the very best come to Ludlow each year on one of its rare stops around the UK.
2016 marks the centenary of Roald Dahl’s birthday and we’re working with the Ludlow Assembly Rooms on a series of events for children in the lead up to the festival. Children, and adults of course, will be able to watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on September 10 and there’s also the chance to win an extraordinary competition – a visit to the Zotter Chocolate factory in Austria! If you love discovering new ingredients and want a tutored tasting then the Slow Food Taste Workshops are perfect for you. In addition, this year festival organisers have invited some of the very best Slow Food producers from across the UK to join local
exhibitors. In addition to the activities inside the castle, a walk around Ludlow is definitely encouraged. You will find plenty to tempt you; not only the medieval streets and abundance of independent shops but also the famous Ludlow Food Festival food trails.
The very popular Sausage trail has had a revamp this year with guest butchers joining those around the town. For those that like beer there is the famous Ale and for those with a sweet tooth there will be pudding tasting, how many can you eat?
Little ones won’t miss out either with a special kids area with cookery lessons and an enchanted pavilion where they can play dress up and perform on stage. Ukulele players and CBeebies favourites, John and Jo from Spring to Life will be at the festival and there will be a tasty Slow Food ‘snail’ trail for kids around the festival, the snail referring to Slow Food’s logo not the food! Summer cocktails
Fluffy
Pancakes With Berries &Cream
Ingredients
135g/4¾oz plain flour (sifted), 1 tsp baking powder, ½ tsp salt, 2 tbsp caster sugar, 130ml/4½fl oz milk, 1 large egg, lightly beaten, 2 tbsp melted butter (allowed to cool slightly) or olive oil, plus extra for cooking. Mixed berries and cream to finish.
Method
1 | Place the flour, baking powder, salt and caster sugar into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, lightly whisk together the milk and egg, then whisk in the melted butter. 2 | Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture and, beat until you have a smooth batter. Allow the batter stand for a few mins. 3 | Heat a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and add a knob of butter. When it's melted, add a ladle of batter. It will seem very thick but this is how it should be. Wait until the top of the pancake begins to bubble, then turn it over and cook until both sides are golden brown and the pancake has risen to about 1cm (½in) thick. Repeat until all the batter is used up. Keep the pancakes warm in a low oven. 4 |Serve with a generous helping of mixed berries and a dollop of cream. Summer breakfast doesn’t get better than this!

3-4 Fresh strawberries 4-5 fresh mint sprigs 30ml fresh lime juice (fresh Limes if cut into slices 2cm thick and quartered if you prefer) 60ml light rum (leave the rum out for an alcohol free version) 90-120ml soda water 2 tbsp soft sugar
Method
1 | In a chilled highball glass, muddle the sugar, lime, strawberries and mint leaves together with the back of a spoon or muddler. Crush the strawberries and mint leaves well. 2 | Stir in the rum and then fill the glass with crushed ice and top off with soda water. Stir gently. 3 | Garnish with mint sprigs & strawberry slices - Yum!

1 | Cut larger fruits into chunks, this makes them easier to load on to the skewers. 2 | Feed the fruit onto the skewers in whatever order you prefer making a tasty and healthy snack. Idea: Add one to a tall cocktail to make it look extra special or even in a glass of lemonade for the children.

Six Holiday Hazards to avoid... We all love the Summer, with sunshine, seaside and holidays to enjoy! Here are some of the most common hazards that crop up during the holiday season. Avoid these problems and you will hopefully have a healthy, happy Summer!

Always wear sunscreen. Avoid the sun’s strongest rays during the middle of the day. Wear clothes that protect your arms and legs, and a hat that shields your face, ears, and neck. Reapply sunscreen every 3 hours, or more often if you get sweaty or swim. (There is no such thing as waterproof sunscreen.) Remember, even a tan is sun damage.

It’s hot, not just uncomfortable - It can make you feel sick. Take special care with children and the elderly, because their bodies don’t cool as well. Wear loose clothes and stay hydrated. Symptoms of heat-related illness may include cramps, nausea, and pale moist skin. Go to a cooler place, drink fluids, and cover up!

Rip currents can pull even strong swimmers out to sea. Shore breaks happen when waves break directly onto the beach, and they can cause spinal cord injuries in surfers. Choose a beach with a lifeguard, who can tell you about water conditions.

One minute you’re strolling barefoot. The next, you’re in agony. Puncture wounds happen more often in summer, when bare feet meet nails, glass, toothpicks, and seashells etc... the biggest problem is infection. Heat, swelling, and drainage are signs that need quick medical attention. You may also need to update your tetanus shot.

Teach kids to swim, always watch them closely at the pool, and keep pools fenced. Don’t mix drinking with fun in and around the water as alcohol affects your balance and judgment.
