Rodington... Eileen and I decided to venture out on a cold Friday night to visit the Bull at Rodington and from the minute we arrived it certainly didn’t disappoint. Situated in the beautiful village of Rodington, there is plenty of parking directly outside and they are open Monday – Sunday 12-11pm, with food served Sunday; 12 Noon - 8:30pm, Monday - Friday: 12 Noon - 2:30pm & 5:30pm 9:30pm & Saturday: 12 Noon - 21:30pm. As soon as we walked in we noticed the warm and welcoming feel to the restaurant, which was decorated wonderfully ready for Christmas, and the restaurant itself is traditional and caters for everyone.
Once we had taken in the Fantastic ambiance of the restaurant we took a walk over to the bar and were warmly welcomed by our waitress for the evening, who took our drinks orders showed us to our table. The drinks menu offers an extensive choice, on this occasion we both went for the soft drink option, I had an orange squash and Eileen went for a diet coke. At this point we were given the food menus and I must say I have been to many restaurants, and this is certainly one of the few places I have been with so much to choose from, the quality of which was evident in the many meals were being served around us, which made it even harder to choose, but definitely for all the right reasons.

For our starters, I went for the Homemade Spiced Pumpkin Soup, and Eileen went for the Stuffed Mushrooms. My soup was served in a lovely deep bowl and came on a fab wooden serving board; it was served with rustic bloomer bread and butter. This was the first time I have had pumpkin soup and it certainly won’t be the last; Full of flavour and certainly not what I was expecting. The perfect thing for a cold winter’s night. Eileen’s Stuffed Mushrooms were served again on the Wooden serving board, and were filled with grilled mozzarella cheese, sprinkled with freshly chopped spring onion and served with a salad garnish. The mushrooms were plump and juicy and with the cheese and spring onion made a perfect combination. Overall two fantastic starters.
For our main meals I went for the Traditional Shepherd’s Pie, rich homemade mince lamb filling marinated in a minted sauce, topped with creamy mash and that was served with peas and your choice of chips. Eileen went for Ho-sin Duck; The Duck Breast came with Ho-sin sauce on stir-fried vegetables, which was served with four tortilla wraps, chips, salsa and soured cream dips. Mine to start with was one of the best shepherd’s pie I have eaten in a very long while, very juicy and filled with tasty vegetables inside, the mash was nice and creamy and to my delight it came with homemade chips and more vegetables. There was a generous portion on my plate and I certainly was not complaining. The homemade chips were the best homemade chips I have had and slightly envious as mine at home are not even a patch on these. Eileen’s Ho-sin duck was served sizzling and made a great impression as soon as it arrived. The portion size was again very good and the flavours were stunning. The duck itself was firm and very tender, bursting with flavours and the stir fried vegetables, homemade chips, as well as 4 tortilla wrap, made the meal complete; an amazing dish. We were literally stuffed and couldn’t fit in a dessert, which is very rare, but shows just how good the portions sizes are. Alas there was just no room!
Overall we had a fantastic visit and would recommend The Bulls Head at Rodington to anyone. With great value for money, without comprise on the quality of the food. The restaurant caters all needs and once you have finished eating, there is also a wonderful bar area where you can relax and unwind. The staff are excellent and nothing is too much trouble. Food lovers need look no further for a tasty surprise! By Luke Smith

My partner and I visited the Old Hall Restaurant, located in the tranquil village of Dorrington. As we arrived I was instantly impressed with the setting and intrigued to go into the restaurant, which from the outside has a traditional Tudor style. As we walked in the character of the restaurant really impressed us and I certainly let my imagination run away with me. I was intrigued to know where the furniture and deco was from. Dorrington Old Hall offers Persian Cuisine and is the first Persian restaurant to open near Shrewsbury, Shropshire. We were warmly welcomed by our waiter and whisked away to our table, and offered us the drinks menu. I went for lemonade as I was the driver for the evening, and Ashleigh went for a glass of Rose and that came from the Lebanese area. The drinks menu certainly a huge variety of choices and the wine menu especially makes for interesting reading with lots of interesting options available.
Our waiter then informed us that for the evening it was a Culinary Selection – Buffet Style, with Appetisers served at the table, all at the very reasonable price of £16.95 for everything you can imagine and much more. To start we were presented with Flat bread, Unleavened and baked in a clay oven at extremely high temperatures, this is the most delicious flat bread that we have ever tasted and came served with special seasoned olives, it was also accompanied with humous and Mast-o-bademjan which is Aubergines baked in clay oven, cooled down and finely chopped, then rubbed in salt, pepper and garlic, then folded into yogurt and garnished with cumin. This made for a perfect starter, not to heavy and full of wonderful flavours; everything worked very well together and made for a perfect start to our meal.
Before we were taken for our main course, we were introduced to Dr Haider and even before I visited the restaurant I had heard about his great reputation and the amazing and authentic food that he creates. You can really tell just how passionate Dr Haider is about his food and the care that is taken in producing every dish. No dish is the same and the love for food really shone through. In fact Dr Haider has just been crowned winner of “Chef of year 2016 Midlands and England - English Curry Awards”. This is a

great testament to the restaurant and Dr Haider, and after hearing about the food, I couldn’t wait to get stuck in.
We were then taken to another room where our food for the evening was served. Our plates were nice and hot which is certainly something I really like. As I walked in I was amazed by how many dishes were on offer and how fresh and enticing the food was. It was piping hot, with new dishes brought out when you wanted them, all together there were lots of different dishes to sample and then the fresh potatoes and vegetable pakora were added to the mix. I just couldn’t believe how much choice there was available and it took me a while to decide which to try first, due to the fact that it all looked so amazing.
I decided to begin with the potatoes which were to die for and a fish pakora, followed by the Kabab-e-Kobeideh (chicken); These are kababs are made with ground/minced chicken, salt and pepper, crushed coriander seeds and few chilli flakes and served on a bed of fried onions. This was my firm favourite and I revisited this one a couple of times as the evening went on, adding some pollo rice, which consists of vegetables, white rice and it also included grapes and pineapple and sultanas. I don’t really say this too often but this dish was spectacular and bursting with flavours, with a slight kick to it which made the dish complete. I haven’t had something with that much flavour for a very long time and can certainly see why this restaurant has won awards. The food was devoured in no time and I was certainly not going to turn a second helping. Ashleigh first sampled the Gosht-e-Akbari; Cubes of lamb, which are cooked until tender and succulent in onions, garlic, ginger, cumin, cardamom, cloves, corriander powder and salt to taste, which was again accompanied by the Pollo rice and the potatoes. She commented that this was the best lamb dish she has ever eaten which was quite an achievement as it is her favourite meat, and she has had it many times! It was beautifully tender and once again the flavours used were perfect for this dish. On our second visit to the buffet, we were much more adventurous and decided to have a few more dishes on our plates. We decided to start with more potatoes as they were our favourites and then go for the Fesenjan; A thick and naturally sweet and sour dish cooked with pomegranate juice, tomatoes, onions, walnuts and flaked almonds and more rice, as well as some Khoresht Gheimeh; Yellow split peas which are cooked with onions, tomatoes, sun dried limes and fresh lime juice giving it lip-smacking quality! Every single dish we tried was as good as the first, and I couldn’t really believe the sheer quality in every dish and how different each dish tasted.
There is dessert on offer, which is included in the price but on this occasion we had to decline due to the fact that we had gorged on the buffet, which was gutting due to the brilliance of previous two courses. Overall we had a great evening at the restaurant and everyone was very welcoming and charming. I have never had Persian food before and I was blown away at how amazing it all was. If you’re looking for something a little bit different, and love top quality food, this is definitely the place to come.

A Shropshire kitchen and bedroom company that specialises in ‘makeovers’ has just completed its latest project. Family-owned Kitchen Revivals, based on Battlefield Enterprise Park in Shrewsbury, is a local business that successfully competes against major national firms and local franchise companies.
Delighted customer Carole Tasker has just seen the kitchen in her Radbrook Road home in Shrewsbury completely transformed, She commented: “A neighbour recently had her kitchen changed by Kitchen Revivals and my husband Mike and I were amazed at the results.
“Our units were the old-fashioned wooden style, being rather dark and gloomy, so we contacted Kitchen Revivals who came up with several ideas for us, including replacing the doors and covering tired worktops with Quartz overlay to give the room a really fresh and modern appearance.
“The design and installation work was carried out very quickly and the workmen were meticulous in their efforts and we are absolutely thrilled with our bright new kitchen.”
The company’s director Darren Smith continued: “We can redesign existing layouts or create a totally new look for a fraction of the price of a new kitchen and have found that a great deal of our recent work has come has from existing customer referrals, which is a fantastic testament to the ongoing success of our family firm.”
In response to customer demand, the company has now launched a similar service for bedrooms, creating a ‘onestop-shop’ for design and makeovers by covering all aspects of any conversions including plastering, electrics and flooring. The firm has seen a 30% increase in turnover after only its fifth successful year in business.
Darren added: “We are fortunate to have made substantial investments into our own technicians and full workshop facilities here on site which, together with a large displays of kitchen layouts and appliances, gives customers a far better idea of the actual services that we can offer.”

There’s never been a better time for local companies to take on an apprentice – and Telford College of Arts and Technology has never been better placed to meet their needs.
For the apprentice, signing up on the programme means they can earn a salary while learning valuable skills. And for the employer, it gives them a chance to shape and nurture a member of staff who will make a real difference to profitability.
The way in which apprenticeships are funded is changing in 2017 with the introduction of the Government’s new Apprenticeship Levy, which comes into effect from April 6. It means that some employers will be required to contribute to a new apprenticeship funding scheme, and there will be changes to the funding for apprenticeship training for all employers.
TCAT’s apprenticeships team is on hand to offer advice about how this is all going to work - whether it’s better to wait for these new rules to come into force, or make a move for a new apprentice now. Call the team on 01952 642452 for details. There are currently over 250,000 workplaces in England alone offering apprenticeships. Hayley Corbett, apprenticeship recruitment manager at TCAT, says: “Latest statistics make interesting reading. For example, 75% of apprentice employers say the programme has helped them cut recruitment costs. “Four out of five bosses predict apprenticeships will play a bigger part in their future recruitment
plans, and an astonishing 89% of apprentice employers say their recruits make their businesses more profitable.”
One such company is STS at Stafford Park in Telford – part of the Toyota Manufacturing Group. Its first apprentice, Lauren Hanley, has gone from strength to strength. Lauren, 22, from Overdale, signed up for a Business Administration level two apprenticeship through TCAT at the age of 19, and is now a valued and established member of the STS team. STS office manager Vanessa Bottomley said: “This was the first time we had recruited an apprentice, and we really appreciated the support from TCAT. “The apprenticeship has worked out better than we could have ever expected, as Lauren is still with us now. She fits into our organisation really well, gets on with the teams and has excelled in everything she has done. “I would definitely consider recruiting further apprentices in the future. Lauren has been like a breath of fresh air to us; she is enthusiastic, looks forward to coming to work every day, and enjoys her role with us, which reflects in everything she does.
Vanessa urged other Shropshire employers to seriously consider speaking to TCAT about taking on an apprentice: “It will open your eyes in terms of the opportunities an apprenticeship can provide for someone, and the organisation.”
Research from the Department of Education shows that those who achieve an Intermediate Level Apprenticeship earn between £48,000 and £74,000 more over their lifetime than those with Level 1 or other Level 2 qualifications. This rises to as much as £117,000 for Advanced Level Apprenticeships.

Poached pears in red wine
with Ice Cream
Beef bourguignon Ingredients 3 Tsp Oil 600g Diced Beef 100g Streaky Bacon 350g of Shallots 250g Mushrooms (button) 2 Cloves of Garlic 1 tbsp Tomato Puree 750ml Bottle of Burgundy Red Wine 3 large Carrots (chopped) Mixed Herbs (Tie some rosemary, thyme and parsley sprigs together with 3 bay leaves. Remove from the pan at the end of cooking and discard.)
Ingredients
6 Pears 1 Litre of Red Wine 1 Cinnamon Stick 200g Sugar The Zest Of 1 Orange and 1 Lemon 1 Vanilla Pod Vanilla Ice Cream
Method
Step 1 - Peel the pears and cut the bottom straight across the base so they stand up when served.
Step 2 - Use an apple corer to remove the seeds from the centre of the pear.
Step 3 - Put all the ingredients together in a large saucepan and boil for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes check the pears with a skewer or toothpick; if they are soft remove them from the heat. If they are still hard cook for a further five minutes or until the pears are soft. Step 4 - Remove the pears with a slotted spoon and put in a bowl. Return the sauce to the heat and reduce until thick.
Step 5 - Drizzle the sauce over the pears and serve with a dollop of ice cream.
Method Step 1 - Heat a large casserole pan and add 1 tbsp oil. Season the beef and fry until golden brown, ensure the meat is browned all over, adding more oil if necessary then transfer to a bowl when done.
Step 2 - In the same pan, fry the bacon, shallots, carrots, mushrooms, garlic and herbs until lightly browned. Mix in the tomato purée and cook for a few minutes, stirring into the mixture. Then return the beef along with the juices to the pan and stir.
Step 3 - Pour the wine over and about 100ml water. Bring to the boil ensuring you scrape any caramelised cooking juices from the bottom and sides of the pan, giving the stew extra flavour. Step 4 - Heat oven to 150C/fan 130C/gas 2. Then cook for 3 hrs. If the sauce looks watery, remove the beef and veg with a slotted spoon, and set aside. Cook the sauce over a high heat for a few mins until the sauce has thickened a little, then return the beef and vegetables to the pan.
Step 5 - Spoon the Beef Bourguignon into serving bowls and serve with mashed potatoes.

Before you book your first ever novice ski holiday there may be a few questions going through your mind like where to go, what to pack, what to wear, how to decide on the right insurance policy and how to get some practice hours on the slopes before hand... Lots of resorts offer ‘Learn to Ski Packages’ for beginners, which are well worth checking out when booking as you may be able to save some extra pennies for the après ski! When choosing a resort for skiing beginners look into the ski schools available, as well as the location and suitable ski runs in the area, before booking your hotel.
You may want to look around for a local ski centre so that you can go along and try it out before investing in expensive equipment. There are a few around that offer tuition and allow you to get in some practice before you set off and hit the slopes for real.
