e Review

e Lion Priorslee by Luke Smith

e Lion at Priorslee has always had a great reputation in the area, my wife Ashleigh and I were looking forward to sampling the new menu, which had literally just been launched the evening before we visited. We were warmly welcomed by our waiter for the evening and shown to our table by the window. e Lion has a warm and inviting atmosphere with a modern twist, whilst still retaining its traditional feel. We were handed the menu and whilst we gazed over them we ordered our drinks, I decided to have a lager-shandy and Ashleigh had a diet coke.

Overall we had a memorable visit to the Lion at Priorslee, we will definitely be returning soon. Every part of the night was fantastic, from the quality, fresh ingredients to the attention to detail.

10 Eating Out

We chatted to the chef who ran over the new menu with us, which was really helpful and made making our choices nice and easy. ere is a good selection of dishes on the menu from burgers and steaks to pasta dishes where you can customise your fresh Tagliatelle by adding your own choice of sauce and meat. For our starters we always choose two to share, so we went for the Deep Fried Calamari served with chunky Homemade Tarter and the Salt & pepper Boneless Chicken ighs served with Chilli Dip. e food arrived in no time and we were instantly impressed with both dishes. e chicken had a delightful crispy coating surrounding the succulent, tender chicken, which combined with the Chilli dip was a terrific dish. Our second dish, the Calamari, was equally as impressive. is is a starter we have nearly every time we go out to eat, and this one lived up to our expectations very well. e coating was crunchy and golden and the squid inside was beautifully cooked - an indulgent treat, and a good start to the evening. For our main courses Ashleigh went for the Panko Breaded Chicken Breast Burger served with Bacon, Cheese Homemade Chips and Coleslaw and I decided to go for the Crispy Belly Pork served with Black pudding, Chive Mash, Seasonal Veg and Crispy Crackling. My pork was sensational, the ingredients worked brilliantly together and the pork itself was exceptionally tender; just how I like it, and the crackling amazing - very crispy and a real treat. e mash potato was smooth and creamy, the simple addition of some chives giving it a good edge, and the black pudding was naughty but very nice; along with the veg, this one of

The Lion Inn Priorslee_Double Page Editorial 15/04/2019 13:16 Page 2

my all-time favourite dishes. Ashleigh was equally as impressed with her burger – she hates it when she orders a chicken burger and it arrives looking like an oversized goujon - this burger was quite the opposite! A huge chicken breast coated in Panko; a Japanese style breadcrumb, with bacon and melted cheese, nestled in a brioche bun, which was terrific. e chicken was cooked perfectly and she enjoyed every bite. e homemade chips were to die for too – the whole course was faultless. After a brief break which was needed due to the generous portion sizes (quality is matched by quantity!), we moved on to the desserts. I had to try the Sticky Toffee Pudding, drizzled with homemade Toffee sauce served with cream, warm custard or Ice Cream; it is one of my favourite puddings, and Ashleigh had her eye on the King Kong Brownie of the week which was Daim Bar served with Honeycomb Ice Cream, from the moment we walked through the door. Brownie is Ashleigh’s ‘go to’ pudding, this one was totally different to the brownies she has had before, but she was extremely impressed with it; it was moist and with the Daim bar included was an all- time favourite. My Sticky Toffee pudding was terrific, the homemade sauce was immense, I loved the way it had soaked into the pudding, infusing it with sweet, sticky goodness and for me it oozed quality in abundance. Overall we had a memorable visit to the Lion at Priorslee, we will definitely be returning soon. Every part of the night was fantastic, from the quality, fresh ingredients to the attention to detail. is restaurant will continue to go from strength to strength in my opinion. For the summer, there is a fabulous outdoor garden area, which is currently being transformed into an area where kids can play and bands can play live music, which will be great. e Lion is a brilliant family pub, with lunch available as well as evening menu. Pay them a visit this summer - you won’t be disappointed.

May & June 2019

EDITOR’S LETTER

I

n this issue, we are embracing the start of what we hope will be a long hot summer in Shropshire. ere are lots of big events on during May & June including the Telford Balloon Fiesta which was brilliant last year as part of Telford’s 50th birthday celebrations and Shrewsbury Food Festival which I absolutely love! Sampling some of the counties best locally produced food and drink, down by the river in the beautiful Quarry, is something me and my family enjoy most years - if you haven’t been, I would highly recommend it. We have as usual put together our ‘What’s on’ guides, so you can check out what else is on during early summer. We also have recipes, fashion, home and garden features and lots, lots more. Running a small local business myself, I understand how hard it can be to succeed in this competitive market. I am really happy that our magazines help to support other small businesses, who are looking for a little bit of help to find more local customers, and by advertising with us they help to support our business too. By working together we can continue to build a strong local economy, which benefits the whole area. We have been publishing the Hype Magazine for over 6 years and have made many changes throughout that time, to improve our services and ensure we produce quality publications, that readers love to pick up, and that also work for our advertisers. We are excited to announce that we are re-naming our publications, to allow us to better represent the local areas that they cover. e Hype Magazine will now become: Telford Lifestyle, Shrewsbury Lifestyle, Wolverhampton Review and Oswestry Review, giving each of the areas that we cover their very own publication. We hope you like the new titles and will continue to support us. In return we will continue to give our readers a great local magazine to enjoy and our advertisers an honest, reliable, quality service - every time. I hope you have a great start to the summer and enjoy the read...

Local Sporting Events Launch of Telford & Wrekin Primary Schools Half Marathon to welcome over 1,800 children on 6th April), Brighton and Hove (22nd June), Stockport (1st July) and West Sussex (14th July). The Schools Half Marathon aims to encourage primary school pupils to get active and work towards an exciting half marathon goal, whilst being rewarded for their achievements. It is a fantastic chance for the youngsters to complete their very own cumulative half marathon in a supportive, non-competitive environment. With a half marathon representing 13.1 miles, the young runners complete the first 12 miles at school over the course of a term or half term, before running the final 1.1 miles on a set day in front of family and friends.

The Telford & Wrekin Primary Schools Half Marathon takes place on Saturday 15th June 2019 and is set to welcome hundreds of children for the grand finale of their cumulative half marathon.

Primary school children from across Telford and Wrekin will come together to run the final 1.1 miles of their Schools Half Marathon at Oakengates Athletics Track, having run the first 12 miles at school over the course of the spring and summer terms.

For many, it will be their first experience of a big sporting event and a wonderful chance to run together in front of teachers, guardians, family and friends. Oakengates Athletics Track is a popular facility for local schools and the youngsters will be treated to a full race experience, including race bibs, a marshalled 1.1-mile route, music, commentator and a start and finish line gantry. As they cross the finish line the children will receive a well-earned medal and be able to celebrate the incredible achievement of running their very own half marathon. A number of schools have already signed up for the Telford & Wrekin Primary School Half Marathon Challenge, with over 240 children confirmed so far. Participating schools include William Reynolds Primary School, Redhill Primary Academy, John Fletcher of Madeley Primary School, St Lawrence CE Primary School, Wrockwardine Wood Junior School, St Matthew’s CE Primary School, St Patrick’s Catholic Primary and Tibberton CE Primary School. More schools are expected to sign up over the coming weeks. The first official Schools Half Marathon took place in Shropshire as part of Shrewsbury Half Marathon weekend, in June 2018. The event welcomed 900 children from 21 schools, and proved such a success that Schools Half Marathon has now become a nationwide initiative. Other events confirmed for 2019 include Shropshire (set

Local News

Schools Half Marathon Race Director Joe Williams commented, “We are thrilled to launch the Telford & Wrekin Primary Schools Half Marathon and to have received such support and enthusiasm for the initiative so far. We are delighted to welcome eight schools already and have received lots of interest from many more. It is fantastic to see local primary school children get started on their very own half marathon challenge and to reward them along the way as they complete their miles. From the very youngest at 4 years old right through to age 11, Schools Half Marathon is a great way to get kids outside and away from screens, taking part in a fun, shared activity with an exciting end goal.”

The Telford & Wrekin Primary Schools Half Marathon Challenge takes place at Oakengates Athletics Track, home of Telford Athletics Club, on Saturday 15th June at 9am. Friends, family and supporters are welcome to cheer on the young runners.

Now is the ideal time for schools to sign up, get parents and children on board and prepare for the initial 12 miles to be completed at school. Any school wishing to take part in the Schools Half Marathon can find out more and fill in an Entry Form on the event website: www.schoolshalfmarathon.co.uk/event-directory, or get in touch by emailing info@schoolshalfmarathon.co.uk. The cost to each school is £12 per child, which represents effective spending of the PE and Sports Premium. Go to www.schoolshalfmarathon.co.uk for further details, like UK Run Events on Facebook and follow @ukrunevents on Twitter and Instagram to keep up to date with all the latest news #SchoolsHalfMarathon.

MAKE A DATE TO JOIN THE RACE FOR LIFE IN SHROPHIRE! PEOPLE across Shropshire are being encouraged to make a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life..

This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life. There are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place in Telford Town Park on Sunday 2 June 2019 and The Quarry, Shrewsbury on Sunday 23 June 2019. Kirsten Shore, Cancer Research UK’s Shropshire Event Manager, said: “Our Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients all over the Midlands access to the latest treatments.

series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research.

Kirsten continued: “The Race for Life is a powerful, inspirational movement which unites participants in the West Midlands with the whole of the UK. “Taking part in our Race for Life events enables like-minded people to get together and remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those who have survived. At the same time, they are helping to make a difference to people with cancer, right now.

“Our Race for Life events have been women-only since they started, over 25 years ago. But we now feel the time is right to open them up so that everyone - women, men and children – has the chance to participate together.

She added: “You don’t have to be sporty to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in One in two whatever way you like.” Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring

“One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer, at some point during their lifetime. Sadly, this means nearly everyone is touched by the disease, either directly or through a loved one or friend.

“To make a significant difference in the fight against cancer we need to harness as much energy and commitment as possible – so what better way than involving everyone in the community in our events.”

people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer, at some point during their lifetime.

Kirsten continued: “We’re urging mums, dads, nans, grandpas, brothers, sisters, friends and workmates to show their support by joining the Race for Life. It’s a perfect example of everyday people doing an extraordinary thing – uniting in a common cause to beat cancer.”

Thanks to everyone who raises money, Cancer Research UK can fund research to fight 200 types of cancer. The good news is more people are surviving the disease than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.

British Ironworks Free School Trips_Double Page Editorial 05/04/2019 12:53 Page 1

Free School Trips for ALL Schls in Shropshire! Including FREE Refreshments for ALL Visiting Students and Teachers...

Whittington CofE Primary School As part of our School Partnership Programme, we aim to reach out to as many regional and national schools as possible to visit our site and enjoy an outdoor, educational experience. On Friday the 8th of March, we were visited by Whittington CofE Primary School and presented with a certificate in recognition of being an Outdoor Activity and Educational Partner. We are incredibly grateful for this certification and will continue to work hard to ensure every regional school receives support in terms of outdoor education. We believe that outdoor education and activities are exceptionally important when it comes to broadening minds and allowing children to freely, and safely, explore the outside world. Whittington school, among many other schools, have benefited from our partnership through various outings and visits to our centre where we aim to showcase and engage each child with something a little bit different. From craft workshops alongside our resident artisans, to exploring our famous Metal Safari Park, to participating in special activities that are updated every season, the Ironworks Centre is the ideal way to learn and grow.

Throughout every visit, children will have the opportunity to explore our site, discover all the fantastic sculptures that we have on display, and learn a little something about the world around them. The activities here at our centre

British Ironwork Centre

have been specially designed to encourage children to access and enjoy all that our grounds and facilities has to offer. We aim to provide activities that will educate and provide enjoyment for children from all backgrounds, genders, abilities, and ages, and there is certainly no shortage of things to do here!

All our school trips and outings are completely free however it would be lovely and gratefully received if you chose to leave a donation for Hope House Children’s Hospice. Whittington Primary left a cheque with us upon their departure and we would like to extend a huge thank you to them for doing that! Every cent that goes to Hope House will help them to continue doing their amazing work throughout our region.

Flu vaccination numbers up at Lunts despite remaining stagnant across Shropshire... A Shropshire pharmacist has said local residents have shown a great respect for their own health after the number of people getting a flu vaccine increased by 20per cent this season - despite numbers remaining stagnant across the whole of Shropshire.

Pharmacist Ian Swindell administered flu vaccinations at the family owned business in Hereford Road, Shrewsbury, and pharmacist Helen Grass administered them at the pharmacy in Roushill, Shrewsbury. Mr Swindell said the number of people coming to Lunts to protect themselves this winter was a stark contrast to the picture at pharmacies across our county. He said: “More vulnerable people than ever have turned to us to help them ward off the flu. “The number of flu vaccinations we administered this winter season was up 20 per cent - which is remarkable considering last season there were warnings of a particularly bad winter. “Last year we doubled the number of injections administered at the Hereford Road branch and saw a rise of 60 per cent at Roushill compared to the year before. “To see the figures rise by a fifth again is very pleasing. “It is particularly pleasing considering the NHS has announced that across Shropshire as a whole the uptake at pharmacies remained constant in comparison to last year. “Now the winter is coming to an end, we’re pleased to report many people took our advice and got themselves protected at Lunts.” He added: “Of course, we know there are some residents in the at-risk groups who are still not visiting their local pharmacy or GP practice to get a jab so we will continue our efforts next winter to make people aware of the risks.” Flu causes 600 deaths on average every year in the UK. Certain residents are eligible for a free flu jab including those aged 65 and over, pregnant women, people with certain medical conditions, anyone living in a long-stay residential care home or those who are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person. Symptoms of flu can include a sudden high fever, dry chesty cough, chills, tiredness and joint pains as well as a sore throat and diarrhoea. Pharmacists can give advice and recommend flu remedies and most cases should resolve themselves without the need for a doctor, except where the person is in an at-risk group or where symptoms last longer than seven days.

Embarrassing Moms_Double Page Editorial 29/03/2019 16:34 Page 1

e MOST embarrassing things mums do,

According to kids... STOP MUM! A nationwide poll of primary school-aged children has revealed a list of the most cringeworthy things can mums do, with the classic ‘kiss them in front of their friends’ scenario coming out tops, mortifying a quarter of British kids.

Second on the list was singing really badly (distressing 23 percent of children), followed closely by telling them off in public (humiliating 22 percent of kids). More than a fifth (21 percent) of UK kids loathe getting their face wiped clean in front of people (put your spitty tissues away mums), and 17 percent get very upset when she tries to floss and fails. The study, by family-owned jewellers, Beaverbrooks, found that 14 percent of children are left blushing because of their mum’s road rage, and the same amount said they can’t stand it when ma asks if they need the loo in front of other people. 13 percent of kids are thoroughly embarrassed by maternal pet names, and 12 percent get hot under the collar when their mum busts some moves (ie dances badly) in public. Little wonder then, perhaps, that one in ten British children roll their eyes when their mum thinks she’s “being cool”, and the same number say they hate the fact that she doesn’t know anything about the latest YouTubers. Despite causing a lot of humiliation, mums across the country must be doing something right as the study found that more than nine out of 10 (94 percent) say they have a “super mum”. Said Lorna Haddon, head of diamonds and jewellery at Beaverbrooks, “For 100 years we’ve been privileged to play a role in our customers’ most special occasions, and with Mother’s Day fast approaching, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to find out what the younger generation really think of the most important women in their lives. “It’s great to see what kids really think, with our research revealing 94 percent of children say they have a Super Mum. That’s why we’ve captured a heart-warming video of the nation’s cutest children saying what they love the most about that special person, and what they think she really wants 4. this Mother’s Day!” www.beaverbrooks.co.uk/littleTELLS ME OFF gems IN FRONT OF

The study also found that 77 percent of the nation’s kids think their mum is cooler than their dad, 60 percent think she gives better hugs than him and almost three quarters (73 percent) would rather mum than dad look after them when they are sick. The study also explored what kids wish their mums would let them do, with 41 percent wanting to be allowed to eat more sweets, 35 percent craving more screen time, while 39 percent would like a later bedtime. 32 percent wanted mum to let them stay off school, 29 percent wished they were allowed to sleep in her bed, and 23 percent would love her to give them their own mobile phone. The number one thing children and mums argue about is bedtime, according to the study, with 40 percent saying it causes the most tension. On top of this, 36 percent of kids say argue when their mum wants them to do something they don’t want to, while 34 percent disagree over how much screen time they are allowed. In fact, 60 percent said mum is the parent who tells them off the most, but despite the clashes, 90 percent of the nation’s children said they will take the time to make a card for Mother’s Day, while 72 percent are going to get dad into helping them choose the perfect present. When asked what they’d give their mum for Mother’s Day if they could choose anything in the world, most kids said a massive box of chocolates (17 percent), closely followed by a big holiday (15 percent) and a new house (14 percent).

e Low-Maintenance Garden Installing Artificial Lawns...

I

f you’d like a beautiful garden without the maintenance that comes with it, artificial grass is a great option. With that real-grass look it's an excellent grass alternative for low maintenance gardeners. Ideal for small/medium gardens, there's no need to water it in dry weather and the artificial turf is porous so won't have puddles in the rain. It also offers greater wear and weather resistance than normal grass. I had been struggling with my garden for some time, as with both my husband and I working, there just wasn’t enough hours in the day – plus we both hate gardening, which is a definite problem. In spite of this we both actually love to sit outdoors when the weather allows, so we had to opt for a low maintenance garden. I decided to remove some old decking and replace it with a limestone patio but it was the remaining area that needed sorting out desperately. Josh Cartwright from JC Garden Services specialises in laying artificial grass, so I gave him a call to see if he could come and take a look for me. He

JC

Garden Services

measured up and explained what he would need to do to get everything ready to install the lawn, plus he also brought along a sample of the artificial grass to show me. ere are hundreds of different grasses available in many different shades and lengths, some of which are excellent and some which are not so good. Once work commenced it was an extremely quick process. e area was dug out and levelled off. A wood work frame is measured and fitted and once this was done, barrow after barrow of MOT stone is laid and compacted using a wacker plate. is creates a good solid base on which to lay the grass, but it also provides good drainage to the area. A layer of sand was then laid to create a bed for the grass to sit on and on top of this a heavy duty weed control was added to prevent weeds growing through the artificial grass. e grass was then rolled out into place, and fixed into place with special grass nails. e whole thing took two and a half days from start to finish. I am so pleased with the finished result, I finally have the garden I have always wanted and it is ready to go whenever I am – Roll on summer!!

LET’S EAT. Strawberry & Cherry Pie is sweet, summery, filled pie will become a family fave, with fresh strawberries and cherries in a flaky buttery crust, and a dollop of cream - what could be better? o begin making the pie crust, place the vinegar in a jug with 125ml of water and 4 ice cubes. Place the flour and sugar in a bowl with a pinch of salt. Add the butter and toss it in the flour to coat it. Place in a food processor and using the pulse setting, roughly mix the butter into the flour until combined - leave some bigger pieces of butter, don’t make it too fine, as the big bits will give it a nice flaky crust.

T

Place onto a clean work surface and make a well in the centre, then add 2 tbsp of vinegar water at a time, carefully folding the flour and butter mixture into the water, until a firm dough is achieved, you might not need all of the water- just discard this with the ice cubes. Split into two equal pieces and wrap each in cling film. Chill for 3 hours (the dough that is - not you!).

Now for the filling, place the cherries, sugar, vanilla, and spices, orange zest and juice in a bowl to macerate for 2 hours. Pop the mixture in a large deep frying pan and cook on a low heat for 15 minutes or until the cherries are slightly softened. Remove 80ml of the liquid and mix it with the corn flour to form a paste, then put the corn flour mixture back in the pan, stirring for a further 4-5 minutes or until thickened. Remove from heat and fold through the apple and strawberries. Set aside and allow to cool completely.

e Ingredients For the pie crust.. 375g Plain flour 55g Caster sugar 250g cold unsalted butter cut in to 2cm cubes 60ml Apple cider vinegar

For the filling... 1kg Fresh cherries, pitted 220g caster sugar 1 tsp Vanilla extract 1 tsp Cinnamon 1 tsp Allspice 1/2 tsp Ground Nutmeg Finely grated zest and juice of 1 Orange 2 tbs Corn flour 2 Granny Smith apples, coarsely chopped 250g Strawberries - halved 1 egg -beaten 1 tbs Demerara sugar Whipped double cream, to serve

Roll out 1 piece of pastry on a lightly floured work surface, make a 3mm-thick circle and use to line a 10 inch pie dish and pop it in the fridge until needed. Roll out the remaining pastry until 3mm thick and cut into 3cm-wide strips and place on a paper-lined baking tray and chill for half an hour.

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Spoon the filling into the pastry case and arrange the pastry strips in a lattice pattern over the filling, pressing sides and strips together to seal. Fold over excess pastry to enclose the lattice strips. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with Demarara sugar. Place the pie on a baking tray and bake for 20 minutes or until starting to brown. Reduce oven to 180°C and bake for a further 40 minutes or until bubbling and golden. Remove from oven and rest for 30 minutes. Serve pie with dollops of cream.

Hello

YELLOW SAY HELLO TO YELLOW...

Now the weather is getting warmer, it’s time to inject a dose of sunshine into your life with one of the hottest colours around - Yellow! It’s bold and bright, and it is everywhere - from the office to the beach. Dresses, skirts and shoes, yellow is all over the high street, in a range of shades that will suit almost every skin tone. You may have reservations about wearing yellow, maybe due to your hair or skin colour, but there really is a shade for you out there.

WHICH SHADE WILL SUIT ME?...

Light to fair skin tone - Mustard and dark yellows will complement your skin tone the best. Canary yellow can work as well but always try it on to make sure it doesn’t wash you out. Medium to olive skin tones should stick to bright and vibrant yellows as these will make you look glowing and enhance your tanned look! Tan to black skin tone- Most shades of yellow will look amazing on you. Literally anything goes; from mustard yellow to pastels and every shade in between!

ALL THINGS 70’S...

With the current trends for all things 70s and brown, we are predicting that the bestdressed homes of 2019 will have an element of rattan. The Retro Rattan Console featured in the main image, blends craftsmanship and texture injecting a little bit of ‘artisan vintage meets natural Scandi’ into your space. Cane wickerwork and teak framework work perfectly together to reinvent the 70s furniture trend into a more refined, elegant shape, styled for our modern homes.

Soft, warm toned, faded floral prints teamed with natural wood and rattan finishes harking back to the 70’s, with a more refined style - perfect for the modern home. We love the feminine hourglass shape of this stool, which could be used in any room of your home from the hallway, to your bathroom! A wonderful little stool that is beautiful to look at, and perfectly in keeping with the current floral trend.

Book Worms... A black country girl who loves to read. I saw this pop up on my Netgallery dashboard and knew I had to request it. I’ve only read one other book by Isabelle Broom and compelely fell in love, so I was hoping it would be the same with this book. I wasn’t wrong! e book follows best friends Alice, Maureen and Steph, who after all turning 30 within three consecutive days, decided to celebrate with a once in a life time trip to Sri Lanka. is is exactly the kind of adventure that Alice is craving. After an accident when she was younger led her to leading a more protective kind of life style she has since found her life has become a routine. She has a steady job, boyfriend, and a very over protective mother, but she feels stifled. Max is ready for his next adventure. After a devasting injury, he is determined to prove himself and prove that there is more beyond the man with the disability. Escaping his smoothering family, he too books a once in a life time trip to Sri Lanka, craving adventure. When Alice meets Max, she is instantly drawn to him. is beautiful and emotional journey will see both of them discover who they truly are, and realise that sometimes people come into your life just at the right time and when you least expect it, and these are the people that you need to hold on to. is book is a heart warming journey from start to finish and will have you hooked from the very first page. I really related with Alice and her struggles as she tried to please everyone whilst ultimately sacrificing her own happiness in the process. I liked her character development through the book, and I felt a burst of emotion when she realised that it was up to her how she lived her life, and she would have to live with the decisions she makes. Escaping the routine of her every day life, truly helped her see more clearly.

I aboultely adored Max. He was such a kind and genuine person and my heart broke when you discovered how he sustained his injury. A big surprise for me was how my feelings for Alice’s mom changed towards the end. I think I resented her throughout the beginning of the book for trying to change Alice and for being too overprotective. But, when Alice and Freddie both confronted her and she explained her reasons, I really emphasised with her. She is a mother who watched her daughter experience a horrifying injury, and it’s only natural for her to feel protective. Isabelle Broom is a fantastic author and I really enjoy her writing style. I think what I enjoyed most about this book, is how she allowed the relationship between Alice and Max develop. It didn’t feel rushed or forced, and they really connected from the moment they laid eyes on each other. I liked how both characters challenged each other and weren’t afraid to tell each other their thoughts when they thought they were in the wrong. e way Isabelle Broom describes places is amazing, and I am sat here contemplating booking a ticket to Sri Lanka right now. It was never a place that really interested me, but the more I read about it in this book, the more I wanted to go, it has now been added to my bucket list. Make sure you have a box of tissues beside you when reading because if you’re anything like me, you’re bound to shed a few tears! I rate this book five out of five stars, and I would hope all romance fans will buy this book.

Weddi n g Trends e Timeless Bride by Claire Pettibone... What is timeless in this culture of NOW and NEXT?! This is something I actually spend a lot of time thinking about as I design a collection. Although I love trends and find inspiration in both the past and my current surroundings, when I create a bridal gown, I do think about the long term. One day my bride will look back at these photos, and maybe even down the line her children or grandchildren will too…what will they think? Was it trendy? Was it too much or not enough? Most importantly, does it capture the essence of this woman…who she was at that sweet time in life when love between two people was just beginning. My ultimate goal is to create wedding dresses that truly portray each bride and give her a beauty that endures the test of time.

IT’S ALL CAKE... Let’s face it - Cake is always good...

But choosing a wedding cake can be difficult. Making sure you choose one that everyone will like isn’t easy. Stick with safe flavours like chocolate or vanilla to give yourself a good shot at pleasing the masses. The fun bit comes with choosing the look of your cake. From ornate white icing to floral explosion - you can find a cake to compliment your wedding theme. I love this ‘Bark Cake’ which would be great for a forest or outdoor wedding. Or these fun little cake pops are really cute...

True Blue & Bright White A timeless colour combo...

By Eileen Callear Picture Left: Laura Ashley- SS19 Waterside Bedroom: Cambridge Plain Back Armchair in Anneliese Seaspray £1025, Devon White Double 4'6" Bed Frame £750, Devon White Louvred Door 1 Drawer Wardrobe £1400. The classic combination of blue and white is still a timeless colour combination. You can use blue and white to create so many of the popular trends around at the moment like Modern Nordic with white walls, wooden floors and modern, minimalistic furniture which embraces functionality. Nautical with white washed wooden wall panels, bold blue and white striped furnishings and natural textiles and Country Classic, which is my personal favourite, with white walls, pale blue stripes, splashes of navy, all accented using blue-and-white ceramics. One of the things I love about this colour theme is that it gives you the ability to mix patterns like floral curtains, checked throws and striped cushions as beautifully demonstrated above in the Waterside Bedroom from Laura Ashley. The white walls emphasize the light and the neutral-heavy colour palette with added pops of colour, natural textures and simple, no-fuss layout, emphasize an elegantly minimalist look.

56 Home Edit

The midnight blue living room (pictured right), again by Laura Ashley is classically ornate, the Belvedere print wallpaper, which features elegant peacocks and timeless florals, is the perfect addition to luxurious spaces. The midnight blue colour way, is serene and stately, giving rooms life and character. The Gloucester upholstered sofa, with its traditional styling and elegantly shaped back really finishes off the look perfectly.

This colour combo creates a calm relaxing feel to any room in the home and really is simple, stylish and beautiful.

Give Dad a New ‘Baby’

For Father’s Day! If you have a father who loves to cook outdoors and who has really gone the extra mile for you over the years, why not buy him much more than a pinny this Father’s Day, to show him that his exceptional kindness or help has not been forgotten?

Rather taking to the controls of a barbecue and serving a menu now a little boring and predictable, he could get a whole new lease of life as a pizza cook – and he doesn’t even have to make the dough!

With a Valoriani ‘Fornino’ baby wood-fired oven purchase, you could buy him something that provides years of pleasure, with the lifespan of a Valoriani being 15-20 years, or more. Learning how to build a fire inside the oven, and keep it fed, is something most dads absolutely relish, whilst concocting different flavours through toppings will really keep him on his toes, as the touch of the Mediterranean spreads across the patio.

Whilst he could also de-stress in the kitchen beforehand by making his own dough, bought-in dough balls are easy-to-use and the hand-stretching of those can be just as relaxing and dramatic, if dad is putting on a show for the guests.

With a good tomato sauce recipe, like that recommended by Valoriani’s Andrew Manciocchi, all he need do is spread that over the pizza base – or leave it off, if preferring to make a white pizza. Any children in the family can then play their part, adding toppings to the base, under your dad’s careful tutelage. It all makes for great family fun and who doesn’t love pizza?

Upgrading dad’s summer entertaining will bring not just a smile to his face, but also provide a whole new world for him to explore, as he seeks out new recipes and inspiration. Many different dishes can be cooked superbly in a Valoriani wood oven, from slow roasted pork, roast vegetables and jacket potatoes, to seabass, ‘Lentils Nonna’ and even bread and butter pudding! And, if you want a few barbecue-style food items, you can buy the optional Tuscan grill, to sit inside the oven.

The Fornino comes in two sizes, but you would probably want to start dad off with the adorable smaller baby Fornino 60, which cooks one 30cm pizza at a time, in just a few minutes. It has a wheeled stand and gorgeous dome, coloured cream, red or black, or a customised colour/design, if you prefer. And, if you’re not sure dad would enjoy being a firestarter and manager of the flames, you can choose a gas-fired Fornino instead. Valoriani are Italy’s finest wood-fired ovens and the Forninos have a 3cm refractory clay dome under their coloured top, a 3cm refractory clay floor, and insulation top and bottom – great for safety but also heat retention. This oven goes from cold to 300°C in 30 minutes and will stay warm overnight, ready to cook breakfast! Weatherproof and with stainless steel flue and rain-cap, there are no worries about British weather affecting these beauties. Getting dad this superb treat, as a special thank you for whatever he has done for you over the years, will be a lasting reminder of your gratitude and a present that should make him the most popular garden party host in the neighbourhood.

A special treat for Dad on Father’s Day

But, if he’s a DIY dad, you may prefer to give him a few hours of fun, by buying him a Valoriani kit that will allow him to build a bigger oven of his own, as a self-build project in his outdoor space. With this, he can build both the oven floor and housing himself or ask a builder to do that for him. Alternatively, the Valoriani UK team can be hired to assist with this. If dad wishes to go it alone, he will get full instructions from Valoriani and telephone support too. This could allow your dad to add value to his property, by having a new oven feature in the garden, with the same high-quality Valoriani standards. The wood-fired Fornino 60 costs £1995 and a Valoriani DIY kit costs around £1000. Details of how to order can be found at www.valorianiuk.com or by calling 01772 2500000.

Home Renovations - Divorce_Double Page Editorial 29/03/2019 12:47 Page 1

Is Renovating A House Together... A recipe for divorce?

By Ginger Research than their parents’ generation. And 17 percent of people think they have no DIY skills at all.”

While we might be in a relationship with someone who thinks of themselves as a renovations dynamo, in fact their efforts might be adding to the stress with 17 percent of people secretly wishing their other half was better at completing the work.

For those who had never embarked on a project with their partner, the main reasons were because they’d rather work with professionals (38 percent), they didn’t have time (29 percent) and they thought they’d end up divorcing (17 percent).

Almost one in ten british couples who attempt to renovate a house together, will end up getting a divorce, according to a new study.

A nationwide study of homeowners, found as many as 77 percent of those who have attempted to do up a home together, claim the project led to furious rows. A further 15 percent claim the pressure of project managing their own building works meant they were constantly at each other’s throats.

In fact, one in ten said doing up a house together almost caused them to break up as a result, while as many as SEVEN PERCENT claim the stress actually caused them to split up or divorce. It is little wonder then that HALF of UK couples who have worked on a big home project together, claimed their sex life suffered, with 8 percent complaining it was completely killed off by a project which they thought would bring them closer together. In fact as many as 58 percent of people who’d bought a house in need of doing up with their partner said they would NEVER consider doing it again.

Home Renovations

The research, by www.MyBuilder.com also revealed that doing up a house yourself is one of the most STRESSFUL things in life, more so than having a baby, getting divorced or taking exams. And two-thirds of people (67 percent) who’d taken on a “fixer-upper” ended up resenting the house and all the time it had taken up.

According to the research, just the THOUGHT of painting or decorating can make our anxiety levels go through the roof. 14 percent of the 2,000 adults surveyed said just considering tackling home improvement themselves leaves them feeling stressed out. And a sensible one in six Brits think that any financial saving from renovating simply isn’t worth the pain. “Biting off more than you can chew can have serious consequences. No matter what type of project you’re tackling, getting the experts in can save a lot of heartache,” says Ryan Notz from MyBuilder.

Perhaps this explains why 20 percent of people think they’re much worse at DIY

Interestingly men and women felt very similarly about the home projects in general, however 20 percent of women wish their other half was better at DIY, compared to only 11 percent of men. Regionally, Cambridge was the home to most DIY rows, with 87 percent of projects begun by couples ending in constant rows, whereas in Norwich, people took things more calmly and only two-thirds of the projects caused relationship mayhem.

(Survey of 2,000 homeowners were surveyed online by Mybuilder.com via Ginger Research in March 2019).

66% of Consumers Sharing...

Le on Social Media Type “social media” in the Google search bar and you’ll see words like “questions beliefs”, “leads to depression” and “who are you really engaging with.” In fact, per Google Trends, queries like “social media harms your mental health” and “social media seriously harms your mental health” have risen in the last 12 months, by +5,000% and +4,000% respectively. It’s hardly surprising that topical headlines have centred on the dangers of screen time – especially to the minds of children.

Interested in the debate, OnBuy.com analysed a report by Mindshare entitled Trends 2019, which holds quantitative research from more than 6,000 consumers aged 18+ across the UK, plus social and search insights to help define themes. OnBuy discovered the recent questioning of social media is mirrored in a change in consumer behaviour.

easily data can be manipulated, how insidious fake news can be. At the same time, technology is beginning to lose its mystique. Take GDPR for example. Perhaps, for the first time, we feel more informed and aware. As a result, consumers are taking ownership of their data and social media pages are a great place to start. This is reflected in the data we have analysed; we are sharing less, monitoring usage and managing what we do and do not see. But, while it’s important to implement social safeguards, we can’t lose sight of the fact social media can be a fantastic tool for business and pleasure, when used appropriately and with care. Our focus should be on management and control; not banishment.”

In 2019, 66% of consumers are sharing less about their lives on social media. Alternately, 58% of consumers are doing more to monitor someone else’s screen time (children, for example.) Further analysis revealed 59% of respondents find the prospect of social media companies running courses to educate children about how to use tech responsibly appealing. An additional 61% of consumers are doing more to monitor their own screen time, with 51% of 18-34-year-olds proclaiming they would welcome pop-up messages on social media warning about excessive usage. Some consumers have taken a stance on digital dieting one step further. 66% have started to hide social media posts from people with views differing from their own, while 72% have begun to unfollow certain people and accounts altogether. Proving today, British consumers have little to no patience for social media content that makes them feel negative, depressed or uncertain. Cas Paton, managing director of OnBuy.com, exclusively comments: “Our dependence on digital platforms has left many with anxiety. It can make us feel distrustful – and rightly so. We know how

•6 consum 1% of ers a more t o moni re doing tor screen their own time. • 72% of cons umers begun have to un people follow certai n and ac altoget counts her.

Bearing this in mind, OnBuy has written 4 simple, easy-toapply tips to help you make smart social choices at home! 1. GIVE EACH PLATFORM PURPOSE Recognise each platform has its purpose, its own strengths and weaknesses. Train your brain to identify social media as a task with an end goal- not a mindless scroll. For example, Facebook is great to catch up with friends. Twitter is a tool that makes reading the latest headlines easy. Instagram is perfect for documenting and sourcing inspiration. Once you have agreed on what you need from your time on social media, stick to it!

2. BE SELECTIVE Sometimes, upon login, it can feel like social overload. There are endless red icons; notifications, messages, DMs, likes, shares and retweets – the list goes on! Don’t feel pressure to respond to everything right there and then. Be selective about what you • 66% of people respond to. It may also help to break it down. On Monday, take on messages from mates. On Tuesday, respond to have started to hide post notifications and likes, and so on. social media posts

from people with differing views.

3. SET A LIMIT Before you boot up your device, set a time limit in your mind. Maybe 30-60 minutes if all you’re doing is catching up with social media. Naturally, it will be a longer limit if you are working. That being said, it’s crucial to take regular breaks, even when you are working! Make a point of leaving your desk when you take a break, to prevent mindless scrolling on socials, and take time to move, stretch and replenish energy.

4. DON’T MAKE IT EASY! The key to making smart social choices is, don’t make it easy! Take steps such as deleting social media apps, placing devices on silent/airplane mode, or turning off app notifications altogether. On your desktop, try a newsfeed blocker. You could even limit where you keep your devices at home e.g. no devices in the bedroom. Social media shouldn’t be considered a necessity, so don’t make it one. If your access is limited, and remains so, it should, over time, become a limited part of your life. Article from: https://www.onbuy.com/

How to combat Bad Breath By Dr Harold Katz... than others. Avoid dishes that are abundant in foods like onions, garlic and curry. Acidic foods and beverages like tomatoes, pineapple, citrus, coffee and sugary foods contain high levels of acids which cause bacteria to reproduce more rapidly. These foods are also responsible for things like plaque, gum disease, tooth staining and tooth decay – all of which contribute to bad breath.

With millions of people across the country suffering with halitosis (bad breath), many of us would think that bad breath itself is the main issue holding them back in the bedroom department. However, bad breath isn’t the only oral health issue that can affect your relationship with your partner. A study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine discovered that men in their 30s who had periodontal disease were three times more likely to suffer from Erectile Dysfunction than those without. Why is this?

This is likely because periodontal or gum disease can cause chronic inflammation of your endothelial cells which form the lining on all your blood vessels, including those in the penis. Impaired blood flow in those blood vessels can result in impaired function of the penis.

What other medical conditions do those suffering with halitosis tend to have? It’s a fact; men are less likely to take good care of their teeth. According to the Oral

72 Health Edit

Health Foundation, only 9% of men have oral health which is classed as excellent, one in four adults admit they don’t brush twice a day, including a third of men and mouth cancer is the 10th most common cancer in men in the UK.

So what can we do to combat bad breath?

1. Hydrate Staying hydrated is a key factor in the battle against bad breath. Dehydration can cause halitosis because bacteria that live in the mouth tend to multiply as the mouth dries out. Dehydration causes a decrease in the production of saliva which fights many of these bacteria, so be sure to drink plenty of water – this can also help reduce the risk of bad breath by rinsing the mouth of food particles between brushings.

2. You are what you eat Or rather your breath is- When food sits in the wrong environment for too long, it starts to spoil. Bad breath can occur no matter what you eat, however some foods have a tendency to cause bad breath more

3. Less is more with mints Unfortunately, all the gum and mints in the world won’t stop chronic halitosis. Sucking mints or chewing gum does serve as a good occasional short-term fix, but if they contain sugar, they may only worsen the situation in the long run. Leaving sugar in the mouth for extended periods of time can lead to an accumulation of sticky plaque on the teeth and encourages the growth of bacteria.

4. Brush and floss regularly Brushing helps eradicate the plaque and bacteria on your teeth and flossing helps get in between the teeth where toothbrushes sometimes miss.

5. Rinse, but keep it alcohol free Regular and specific use of alcohol-free mouth rinses will help calm the gum area and work to eliminate germs associated with gum disease and reduce the build-up of plaque and tartar. It’s important to steer clear of alcohol-based mouthwashes as these can cause dry mouth, and just mask odours rather than killing off bacteria.

Step Away from the Screen: Why Seychelles is the Ideal Digital Detox Retreat...

Anse Lazio Secondary Beach Photo Credit: Gerard Larose

If you’re guilty of constantly checking your phone or device, you may be due for a digital detox. Just imagine: You wake up to the soothing sound of the ocean. The sun is beaming through your blinds. As you open the curtains, you’re greeted with golden sand and palm trees swaying in the breeze. There’s no need to check your feed. Only a sense of calm is present. Is it a dream? Not in Seychelles! With direct flights and affordable accommodation, this could be you. Stare at heavenly landscapes rather than your screen - Tired of seeing envyinducing pics on your Instafeed? Once believed to be the biblical Garden of Eden, Praslin is full of natural beauty to feast your eyes on instead. Visit UNESCO World Heritage Site Vallée de Mai and see the legendary coco de mer palms found only in Praslin and Curieuse islands. You might spot one of the world’s rarest birds, the Seychelles Black Parrot, along the way. Of course, a visit to Praslin isn’t complete without spending time in Anse Lazio, a top contender for the world’s most beautiful beach.

Slide into the sea instead of someone’s DMs - When it comes to fishing, sailing or watersports, this part of the Indian Ocean makes even the most obsessed social media users want to log off. That’s because Seychelles enjoys a ‘perpetual summer’ and warm water all year round. Short sailing distances and safe moorings make it easy to hop around the inner islands. The virgin waters and ancient atolls of the outer islands are home to

Digital Detox Retreat

incredible snorkelling and diving opportunities, while the sea creatures and coral reefs beat anything that can be seen online.

Watch the birds instead of your followers - As the name suggests, Bird Island is best known for its rich birdlife. Watch sooty tern and brown noddy birds nesting and enjoy a pace as slow as the giant tortoises that inhabit the island. This slice of paradise is privately-owned, has no cars and roads, and both phones and TVs are nowhere to be found in the chalets – just you in a pure, natural and beautiful environment. To get there, catch a charter flight from Mahé to Bird Island. It operates daily, and you can arrange to get picked up in a helicopter. For details, visit birdislandseychelles.com/flights.

Hop around islands not profiles Seychelles’ wide variety of islands is what makes it such a special destination – each one is unique in geography, character and history. With regular air and sea transport out of Mahé, you can explore the different islands hassle-free. Choose from ferry services, domestic flights and even helicopter transfers that are all available daily. After seeing the main islands, pop over to the peaceful outer islands such as Desroches and Alphonse. Privately owned, they remain part of the few untouched corners of the world. In Descroches, explore the forest, lighthouse, village and other sights on 15 km of bike trails. The raw beauty will make you forget you ever had a Facebook. Learn more about the islands: seychelles.travel/en/discover/the-islands.

Surf the waves instead of the web Along with warm water and captivating scenery, you can expect uncrowded beaches in Seychelles. The most famous surfing spot is Grand Anse beach in La Digue. Aside from a beautiful shore, you’ll find great beach breaks. Mahé is another popular choice offering pristine spots for different types of surfing and consistent waves on the east side of the island. Although you can hang ten throughout the year, the best time for surfing in Seychelles is April to September. Whether you’re a serial Netflix binger, an office 9-5er or a casual computer and smartphone user, we could all do with some time away from the screens. If you’re ready to tune out, you won’t miss the gadgets in Seychelles.

Play in outdoor paradise not on ‘pads Clean, powdery-soft sand to play with and crystal-clear shallow waters to paddle in is just the start of endless entertainment for the whole family. Ziplining, horse riding, kids’ snorkelling, thriving nature reserves and hands-on workshops mean you won’t ever have to reach for the iPad games. And it gets better: Seychelles is the tropics minus the vaccinations and dangerous animals and plants. A variety of family-catered accommodation options, easy travel and a children-loving culture gives family holidaying a new meaning. But before you unplug, plan your getaway at seychelles.travel.

Rewind Your Body Clock e Complete Natural Guide to a Happier, Healthier, Younger You

Rewind Your Body Clock - Inflammation, Epigenetics, Beauty Tips, Herbs & a Positive Mindset By an Expert Who Reduced Her Biological Age by 26 Years!

Jayney has produced an expert holistic guide on the science of how to age well – not only physically and mentally but also emotionally and spiritually. It’s the most comprehensive guide out there covering everything from the anti-ageing benefits of a plant based diet, the difference between synthetic and natural vitamins, longevity breathing techniques, the best exercise, natural beauty secrets, powerful herbs to promote hormonal balance, how to cultivate great relationships and feel sexier and the power of nature and sleep.

Each chapter includes easily implementable natural techniques which are supported by solid scientific research, with a focus on how to develop a 'rewind' mindset. Packed with facts and tips such as the use of inulin to reduce the middle aged spread, fruits and vegetables you really need to go organic with and youth defying beauty tips such as lash lifts and eating foods with malic acid to lighten one’s teeth - all of which is underpinned with biological age tests for readers to try for themselves. At the end there is a specifically designed practical programme called the 'Personal 21-Day Rewind Plan'. The result? Better skin, a leaner body, stronger bones, improved cognitive function, enhanced libido, more energy,

Rewind Your Body Clock

improved immune function, more resilience against stress and much more.

What makes Rewind Your Body Clock particularly powerful are the credentials of its author, Jayney Goddard, who is President of the Complementary Medical Association. Goddard became interested in biological age reversal 16 years ago when she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthirities, leaving her wheelchair bound for 10 years. Chronic inflammation had caused not only her joints to be inflamed but also her internal organs such as her brain, lung and kidneys. During this time her weight plummeted and at the age of 38 she was given a biological age reading of a 55 year old. Slowly she returned to health by developing and following her own unique and holistic mind/body approach to reach deep and lasting wellness which she shares in this book. When she was retested at 53, she had reduced her biological age to 27.

Our attitudes towards ageing have undergone radical changes in recent years and many women now recognize that beauty and health come not from invasive procedures, fillers or expensive skincare brands but from the inside out. So, while we can’t change our chronological age, we can dramatically reduce and even reverse our biological age so that we have plenty more healthy, happy years to look forward to.

Biography...

Jayney Goddard is acknowledged to be a global leader in Complementary Medicine with a special interest in immunology and anti-ageing. President of the Complementary Medical Association, Fellow of The Royal Society of Medicine and Founder and Co-Chair of the British Society for Lifestyle Medicine, with a Master of Science postgrad degree and Mind/Body Medicine training from Harvard Medical School, she has a monthly column in Natural Health Magazine and is the Discovery Health Channel’s Natural Health Expert.

“A car like that mate, just has to be the overarching glory of the present day: a modern motor for the modern world that eschews mundanity in pursuit of the sublime... Medieval stonemasons and craftsmen erected magnificent cathedrals which today are celebrated as marvels of the age and venerable monuments of aspiration for all time. Many would argue that the best twenty first century motorcars in their peerless ingenuity, combine technology and artistry, plus the sublimity of aspirational ideology, into an impressive statement of intent and are the true heirs to these earlier wonders. That this is not such a far fetched comparison is borne out the moment you experience for the first time a drive in the latest Lexus contribution to the crossover concept of car design. The Lexus RX 450h F Sport is the way to go for modern motorists who demand power, style, accommodation, comfort, versatility and economy in equal measure. A crossover like no other, it inspires hushed reverence - a response made all the easier for driver and passengers as they are transported in armchair comfort to the sound of distilled silence; a silence so serene that it seems an intrusive shame to spoil it by deploying the state-of-theart infotainment system. Seen from the outside this Lexus, in common with all modern architecture, is likely to divide opinion. And yet in its uncompromising assertion of modernity, it emphasises the truth of the claim that monumentality and scale are two separate things. Not anything like so big as Chartres it nonetheless, in my view, is comparable to any past magnificent monument regardless of any discrepancies of size. It represents a truly monumental stride forward in motoring, redolent of changing times and priorities. Assertive angularities in crisply styled coachwork point towards tomorrow as assuredly as flying buttresses serve to elevate Heavenwards the stone they support. You

Lexus RX450h F Sport know at once this is no ordinary car but you know you will feel special the moment you take the wheel. Passengers too will be treated to the privileged feeling of being in the best possible seats as the Lexus show takes to the road. Impressions are one thing, but it takes hard data to nail home to the uninitiated just how advanced and innovatory this car is. A hybrid? Already you can see the suggestion of a yawn on the faces of professional cynics stimulated to the point of boredom. 'Hybrid? Seen them mate. What's new guys?' Plenty in fact for those who choose one of these. The RX 450h is available in several variants starting at ÂŁ49,700 from SE through Luxury, Sport, F Sport and Premier. The F Sport tested here costs from ÂŁ55,200. They all pack the basic punch delivered to all four wheels by the innovative electronic CVT. For me this hybrid shows the way forward. It offers city civility in

paying obeisance to low emission zoning while offering mile-munching punchiness on long open road journeys. The 262hp V6 3.5 litre petrol engine is coupled with not one but two electric motors ensuring all-wheeldrive as a constant irrespective of driving mode. When the engine works together with the batteries, progress is assuredly swift and torquey. You can reach near 125mph and accelerate from rest like a shot. Select electric mode and city driving was never as sweetly silent and silky smooth. Select 'sport mode' or 'sport plus' mode and this Lexus really flies. Best of all, Lexus lateral thinking divides up battery bulk into three compact nuggets nestling side by side underneath the rear seats; a golden solution that frees up space for luggage while ballasting the chassis in a road friendly distribution of weight. Did I mention that the split battery requires no external charging? That's right. No plugging - in needed. Energy normally lost in retardation is recycled

via the little gold cells of the compact batteries, all ready to be deployed when the time comes. In order to harness petrol power and electric energy in combination proportionate to need, Lexus has designed a sophisticated transmission system they call Hybrid Drive. Compact and versatile it performs as a willing servant and it has to be said that when it comes to thirst, a very abstemious one. For a car this size to go so quickly it comes as a shock to discover that one can expect an overall fuel consumption nuzzling the 49/50 mpg mark. All these benefits together with the seamless transition between modes, challenge the accepted nomenclature. The Lexus RX 450h is surely much more than a hybrid. I wonder if that old motorcycling term 'combi' (Short,of course, for those youngsters out there, for a motorcycle and sidecar combination) is a term better reallocated to serve as a descriptive label for the forces of combined technology and design that have produced such a remarkable motoring package.

Certainly there's something transcendental about the RX experience. This is a car that makes you feel like a better person. It was no coincidence that I drove the car to the nearest cathedral city and parked as close as I could to the venerable stonework. High up the walls in niches and crannies as though sheltering from the grotesque gargoyles and their spouting mouths were clustered secular figures, perhaps portraits of the stonemasons themselves. I fancied that the cheeky grins and grimaces were directed down at me and the RX as if to say 'A car like that mate, just has to be the overarching glory of the present day: a modern motor for the modern world that eschews mundanity in pursuit of the sublime'.

Summer Motoring

Suer Motoring Tips... Safe Travels is Summer!

then allow the engine to idle for 5-10 minutes you should hear the fan cut in automatically as the engine heats up. PET HATES... It is great to get out and about in summer time, and dogs love a trip in the car. Whenever travelling with your dog remember NEVER leave your pet in a hot car and NEVER let them hang their head out of the window; it may look cute but it is really dangerous and has resulted in horrific injuries from hitting objects or other vehicles. Make sure you have plenty of water and shade available for them at all times. You could be breaking the law if your dog isn’t suitably restrained when travelling in your car. Use a good quality harness, or a crate or guard, to keep you and your dog safe. There are loads on the market so do your research first or seek advice from your vet. We all know the challenges that we face travelling in winter, they are very well-documented, but what about the particular problems that present themselves during the warmer months? Warm weather can also have an impact on travel and can affect the components of our cars too, and now summer is officially here we wanted to bring you some of the best tips to help ensure that you and your car remain in tip-top condition when the temperatures start to rise. TYRES... When it comes to safety and performance, your tyres are the most important component of your car. Driving with dangerous or defective tyres puts the safety of drivers and passengers at risk, but can also lead to a fine of up to £2,500 and three points on their license, and that is PER TYRE, so four illegal tyres could mean a fine of £10,000 and 12 penalty points! Worn or underinflated tyres effect handling and braking, and at high speeds can even result in a blow-out. Check your tyres for wear, including the side walls; most garages offer free checks if you are not sure what signs to look for, and if they are worn get them replaced. BRAKES... Get your brakes checked for signs of crumbling or discoloration. Also examine the rotors and drums for cracking. If you can’t fix any issues yourself, visit your local garage. CHECK YOUR LEVELS... Ensure oil, coolant, windscreen wash and brake fluid levels are correct - top up where needed. BATTERY... Battery problems are the number one cause of breakdowns. Check your battery to ensure that the connections are clean and tight, and free from corrosion. FAN-TASTIC... Check your cooling fan before setting off on a long journey. Set the heater to cold, warm up the car to normal temperature and

BE PREPARED... Make sure you have all the essentials with you like a first aid kit, for things like sunburn or insect bites and stings, which are common during summer. Apply suntan lotion when driving as you can burn easily on a long trip (even through the window). Carry plenty of drinking water, food, a fully charged mobile phone and sun tan lotion.

New Show Homes

at Haygate Fields, Wellington

Shropshire house hunters will be able to view properties from Bovis Homes’ brand-new range as it launches two new show homes at its Haygate Fields location in Wellington. As well as being among the first show homes from the new collection to open in the country, the properties will also include an array of exciting features to demonstrate how smart technology can be used at home. “We only have a handful of show homes open to the public from our new housing range, and we are delighted to be launching two at our Wellington location,” says regional sales director, Elaine Cartwright. “These show homes will be particularly special as they will demonstrate our new state-of-the-art smart home system which is available to customers at Haygate Fields.” Bovis Homes is offering buyers the ultimate smart home package, with cables and devices built-in to create a clean, modern and stylish property. Visitors to the show homes will be able to see for themselves how the technology could transform their day-to-day living. “Our threebedroom Spruce and four-bedroom Aspen show homes will be set-up to demonstrate the functionality of the system and will include appliances such as ovens, fridges and TV systems, as well as sound and lighting which can be controlled by a smart home app on a phone or tablet or by voice control,” says Elaine. The new collection, which ranges from twobedroom homes to large five-bedroom family houses, are named after British trees, and have been designed and developed by Bovis Homes for launch in 2019. Elaine says: “The first part of the design process for the new range involved talking to all types of home buyer and asking what they looked for in a new home. “In developing those ideas into the designs, our guiding principles were to create quality homes that are eye-catching and well-proportioned on the outside, with a real sense of light and flow on the inside.”

Haygate Fields sales centre is open daily, from 10am until 5pm. Call 01952 305 051 to speak to the team. The four-bedroom Aspen has a front-facing sitting room, which is light and airy, while the contemporary, open-plan kitchen and dining area is ideal for entertaining friends and family. There is also a separate study, which takes the hassle out of working from home. The master bedroom, with its private dressing area and luxury en suite, is the perfect place to relax and unwind. The impressive three-bedroom Spruce combines traditional architecture with modern design to stunning effect. The sitting room and open-plan kitchen and dining area span the full length of the property, making them light, airy and very spacious – ideal for entertaining guests. While the master bedroom includes a private dressing area and en suite. “So far, the feedback for the new homes has been phenomenal and we can’t wait to welcome visitors to experience the exciting new designs here at Haygate Fields,” says Elaine. “If you’re looking to move, it’s worth registering on our website to receive exclusive launch dates and sneak peaks at the new style housing range and pre-show-home prices,” says Elaine. “Alternatively, you could pop into our sales centre and speak to the sales team who will be able to tell you more about our new homes and our range of purchase assistance schemes, which could help to get you moving.” The new show homes are due to launch in April.
