Hythe Watch NEWS FROM HY THE TOWN COUNCIL

Message from  the Town Mayor On October 31st, Hythe was greatly honoured to be visited by His Excellency the Ambassador of Nepal to the Court of King James, Dr Durga Bahadur Subedi. His Excellency and his Deputy Chief of Mission attended and addressed a meeting of Hythe Town Council and afterwards also attended a reception at the Everest restaurant in Hythe. Dr Subedi had suggested to the Mayor that Hythe Town Council might wish to approve a "Sisterly Relation" between Hythe and Manthali, in Nepal, a town some 100 miles east of Kathmandu. The Council duly voted on and approved a motion to this effect. The aim of the Sisterly Relation will be to foster mutually beneficial personal, cultural, commercial and tourist relations between our two towns and a small working group of councillors has now been formed to progress this. Councillors noted the strong bonds between this country and Nepal, with a greatly respected Nepali community living here in Hythe and in surrounding areas, contributing greatly to the life of the town. It was also noted that Hythe and the UK owe a great deal to the Gurkhas who have fought so bravely for this country and in many cases given their lives. Manthali is a beautiful town in the mountains of Central Nepal with a population of some 45,000 people. Its Mayor is The Worshipful Ramesh Basnet and as many as 20 languages are spoken in Manthali, although all the children there also learn English at school.

Councillor’s Corner  Councillor Jim Martin A new Strategic Plan for Hythe is long overdue. The existing Hythe Business Plan was written in 2005 and a new plan is required. Hythe Town Council appointed Dave Austin, a very experienced Kent Association of Local Councils facilitator, to lead the first workshop in the Strategic Planning process which took place on 4th November this year. Following the workshop the results will be published on the Hythe Town Council website and will represent the first step on the way to agreeing a new Strategic Plan for Hythe. Hythe Town Council will then be consulting extensively with the community in Hythe to inform the process and we want everyone to have their say. Once agreed, the Strategic Plan will represent the collective view of the future of Hythe and what we have to do to achieve it. Hythe Town Council hope that the process of agreeing a Strategic Plan for Hythe will be inclusive and our opportunity, as a community, to set priorities for the Council, focus our energy and resources. We also want to strengthen operations, ensure that all stakeholders are working toward common goals, establish agreement around our intended outcomes/results, and assess the Council’s direction in response to a changing environment.  We hope the Strategic Plan will be a community effort that produces fundamental decisions and actions that shape and guide what Hythe Town Council is, who it serves, what it does, and why it does it, with a focus on the future.

First LGBT wedding  in Hythe Town Hall Congratulations go to George and Matthew when Wendy Lee had the great pleasure of assisting the registrars at Hythe Town Council’s very first same sex wedding ceremony on 2nd August 2019 – it was a joyous occasion, George and Matthew had a lovely sunny day and cut quite a dash as you can see from the photograph right. Poppy Appeal  Memorial Bench

A Nostalgic Connection between Hythe and Malta G.C.

Hythe Town Council are delighted that our Mayor, Doug Wade, was available to dedicate a memorial bench, at the launch of the national Poppy Appeal, to those who lost their lives in two world wars and all conflicts since. As the inscriptions reads: “the people of Hythe are grateful to those who gave their lives so we can live ours.” The bench is positioned outside the Hythe Town Council offices at Oaklands, just next to the library, and is the result of some hard work by Oaklands staff. Even the contractor, who was instructed to install the bench, waived his charges in memory of the fallen. The purchase of the bench was made possible via F&HDC Ward Councillor Jim Martin’s Ward grant to the Davis Oaklands Charitable Trust. During the life of this Council administration, it is hoped, we can mark Remembrance Sunday each year with the erection of a similar bench on different sites around Hythe.

Small Grants Scheme  Does your community group or charity need funds? Hythe Town Council has a scheme under which it can make grants of up to £300. The fund for April 2019 to March 2020 is for £3000. Through the scheme, we seek to encourage, support and promote local volunteer organisations, community interest companies and charities for the benefit of the town. Details about eligibility and how to apply are on our website, under policies, or please contact the town clerk for details and an application form. We would be delighted to hear from you.

It was through a chance visit to Hythe Town Hall that retired policeman, Mr John Navarro, discovered a little known connection between Hythe and his native home, the island of Malta G.C.  Mr Navarro, who retired after 30 years serving in the police force in Kent, was visiting Hythe and asked to go into the Town Hall which was being opened for a meeting.  Whilst looking around, Mr Navarro's attention was drawn towards a small photograph of a Naval Ship, HMS Hythe, moored in a place he identified instantly. Mr Navarro put together his findings in an article which is now on public view next to the photograph at the Town Hall.  He said, "I felt it was important to recognise the connection between Hythe and the role of the island of Malta G.C. during the Second World War, so that it is not forgotten." HMS Hythe was honoured by Malta Post in 2012 with a special issue of stamps to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of its role in 'Operation Pedestal', known in Malta as the 'Santa Maria Convoy' carrying much needed supplies to the island of Malta in August 1942.

Remembrance Sunday Hythe Town Council shared with the entire nation its Annual Civic Parade and Service on Sunday 10th November 2019 at the War Memorial and was attended by the Right Worshipful Town Mayor of Hythe, Councillor Doug Wade, accompanied by Councillors, Past Mayors, Civic and Military Dignitaries. It was a beautiful sunny day and the War Memorial was attended by hundreds of people marking their respect to the fallen. The Hythe Town Concert Band provided the excellent music and Captain Callum McKenna of the Salvation Army and Dudley Shipton, the Royal British Legion’s Padre, led the service in prayer. After the Service the Parade marched down Hythe High Street where the Right Worshipful Mayor of Hythe took the salute. It was a wonderful turnout of veterans, local organisations, military personnel and schoolchildren.

Trees The Trust that controls lands owned by Hythe Town Council has  approved a programme of tree-planting this winter with a view to beautifying Hythe, removing carbon from the atmosphere, increasing bio-diversity and bio-abundance in Hythe, reducing temperatures during summers, and removing pollutants from the air. Trees really are wonderful things that form a crucial part of any strategy to address the Ecological and Climate Crisis that we find ourselves in. Fortunately, the Woodland Trust is now giving away trees in large numbers so all our new saplings will be free. Cllr Martin will also apply for more saplings to be shared with Hythe residents, businesses, and anyone who has suitable land where they would like to plant trees. Just contact Hythe Town Council  if you would like to have free saplings or participate in the planting of saplings during the winter months.

THE FOOTPRINT PROJECT: Commemoration of the Fallen the story so far...

We want Hythe Life readers to know about the unique action undertaken by The Sandgate Society. This project is to commemorate the fallen from Sandgate and Folkestone in WW1. In 2014, Richard Moffat – Chairman of the Remembrance Line in Folkestone - had the idea of creating a footprint trail of fallen soldiers who marched from the Shorncliffe camp in

and date of death in date order. Altogether there were 48 fallen from Sandgate and a further 568 from Folkestone.   The footprints are made of bonded resin

“Each Footprint is dedicated to a fallen soldier from Sandgate and bears his/her name and date of death in date order. Altogether there were 48 fallen from Sandgate and a further 568 from Folkestone. ” North Road Sandgate down to Folkestone Harbour to embark for the Western Front.   It was the last time they walked on home soil. Marjorie Findlay-Stone, Chair of the Sandgate Society in 2015, was keen to implement the project and Phase 1, fully funded by the Sandgate Society, was completed in time for the 11/11/2018 when 16 footprints were unveiled at the Sandgate War Memorial.    Each Footprint is dedicated to a fallen soldier from Sandgate and bears his/her name

with brass plaques, set in granite, as a lifetime remembrance.

In April 2019 Phase 2 of the project was completed with funding from various charities and members of the local population.  These 16 footprints have been installed in the Folkestone Coastal Park at the boundary between Sandgate and Folkestone. The third phase of the Sandgate section of the project will be implemented when sufficient funding has been raised.  Each 16

The number of cats as pets, has now increased to 11.1 million – overtaking dogs at 8.9 million! Here at Hythe Vet Centre we want to deliver the very best in professional veterinary care whilst maintaining a loving, caring and family ethos. After a long search for the right place for our passion, we believe that we have found it, here in Hythe. THESE INCLUDE: • Dedicated parking. • Purpose built surgical theatre, imaging suite and kennels. • Spacious waiting area and large consulting rooms. • X-ray machine with digital processor allowing faster developing times. • An ultrasound scanner similar to those used in human hospitals. • Heated theatre table – to keep your loved ones cosy warm! • Air driven dental machine, not unlike what you would find at your own dentist! • The latest veterinary practice computer system – this will increase the efficiency of the mundane administration side of things. • An oxygen concentrator – this will provide the oxygen that we will use during anaesthetics. Its biggest bonus is that it means that we will not need regular oxygen bottle deliveries, reducing our environmental impact.

Combining 25 years of experience in small animal veterinary practice, Colin, Helen and their team aim to provide a first class service to both you and your beloved pets. We have been awarded Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons General Practice recognition. This is a sought after accreditation that gives you peace of mind that our practice adheres to strict professional standards.

The Curvy

Boutique My name is Lavinia. I have a passion for fashion & as a curvy lady myself, I have found there is a distinct lack of local Boutiques that cater for size 16 plus.

My solution was to open The Curvy Boutique located at 91 High Street, Hythe, Kent. I personally select all items considering what will flatter the more curvaceous figure. Knowing what will look great & give body confidence. Equally important are the accessories, a statement necklace or scarf can complete an outfit. The Curvy Boutique is not just for plus size clothing, I also sell gorgeous handbags, scarfs, capes & jewellery - something for everyone, these make great Christmas gifts. I provide a personal shopping experience for ladies. Advising on styles to suit & sizing. I am also happy to source items if someone is looking for a special or specific item.

Opening hours are below & I can also post out items if ladies are not able to visit the Boutique. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

9.30am-4.00pm 9.30am-4.00pm Closed 9.30am-4.00pm 9.30-4.00pm 9.30am-4.30pm Closed

I would like to say a big thank you to the local residents for all their support & being so welcoming!!

Please pop in for some retail therapy!

Hythe Environmental Community Group (HECG)

Get Involved & Make a Difference

Hythe Environmental Community Group is all about a community-led approach to making the Hythe area a more fulfilling, sustainable and environmentally aware place to live. We aim to help people reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, reduce excess waste, improve the recycling of what waste they do produce, improve the visual impact of the area and increase appreciation of Hythe’s magnificent flora and fauna. We have a website and Facebook Page forming an umbrella structure supporting broad sub-groups of “Energy”, “Food”, “Flora and Fauna”, “Waste” and “Local Environment”. The Group is owned by the members and new initiatives can be set up by anyone at any time. Recent additions under the “Food” sub-group are “Hythe Hops” – a community Hop Farm and “Community Kitchen” – a blog on our website with suggested recipes and tips/hints, shortly to have its own on-line discussion forum. You will find all of our many activities on the website, but we’ll highlight just a few of them here: Litter Picking Come and join us for our monthly Litter Pick 1st Saturday of the month from September to June inclusive, finishing with a sociable tea/coffee in

Reduce Food Waste and have fun: Apple Pressing in Hythe High Street: The Group has all of the equipment for apple pressing, purchased as a resource for the community and this is available for anyone to borrow. It has been used by a number of local people over the last few years for turning excess apples into juice and/or then into cider. This October has seen the fourth year for the Annual Apple Pressing Event in the High Street, where people bring along their apples, chop them up and squeeze the juice out. This is a really fun event, much enjoyed by children and parents alike. It’s educational, sociable and saves many Kgs of fruit from waste. If you’d like to borrow the equipment then drop us a line to Hytheecg@yahoo.com If you’d like to join the fun in the High Street, then I’m afraid you will have to wait until next October.

Harvesting the rewards: An earlier article in this magazine described how the Hythe Hops community group was established and successfully planted 130 hops in the Spring 2019. We have now reached the end of the six-month hop-growing cycle and have harvested the rewards of all our work during the year. Growing up July and August brought mixed fortunes for our hop growers; some plants were shooting up, some, even though they had shown early promise, stalled. Sadly, a few plants appear to have suffered due to different challenges, including young footballers, as well as the weather conditions. Growing on Folkestone Harbour Arm is a particularly challenging environment and we will see next year whether they are permanently damaged.   Blackfly sightings and other worries were shared, and solutions (organic of course) were suggested. In most cases the little blighters were repelled, with the most effective remedy being nature and the arrival of ladybirds, encouraged by companion planting.  The key summer requirement for our very young plants was to keep on watering, as the root system was not yet well-established, and those that were pot-based needed even more hydration.  Almost none of our members had grown hops before and watching a hop grow from leafy climber, to burr, to cone was fascinating. Social gatherings allowed members to compare the progress of their new green and fast growing babies and to receive the latest update on plant care and harvest plans. Harvest time Most professional growers wouldn’t even bother to pick the hops in the 1st year when the plants aren’t properly established. We, however were after what we could get and the biggest questions were – how big a harvest would we get and what brews could we make? Having chatted the question through with our two brewers and based on our number of plants and the experience of the Deal Hop

Farms we hoped we could enable Range Ales and HopFuzz to each make a brew. They  would be Green Hop ales which would require delivery of the picked hops on the day they are harvested! –With 60+ growers to coordinate this was going to be a major logistical challenge. Two date options were set in September giving a preferred harvest and a fall back in case of bad weather.. Luckily the sun shone and growers were “marshalled” into picking and delivering all hops to the brewers on the earlier date,  21st September, by mid-day.  Harvest yields across growers and plants were very varied. Some plants produced very modest crops, but a number exceeded our best expectations for the first year and produced in excess of 1kg from a single plant.  We were very happy with the total weight picked of 31.5kg and the brewers were highly impressed with the quality of the cones and the quantity which allowed them to progress the two planned brews. Green Hop ale Our brewers deliberately set out to make different style ales – one light and citrussy, the other slightly darker and more malty.  The beer was distributed to local pubs in Hythe, Sandgate, and surrounding villages towards the middle of October and was on tap a few days after that.  Customer and publican feedback was very positive – “sold out in one day; more please” was one comment from a happy publican.   Our Hythe Hops growers celebrated the end of our first year with a social event in late October where we  successfully  tackled two firkins of the delicious green hop ales and enjoyed an evening where the shared hop

interest started many conversations, but friendships and the community network grew from there.  doing good in the community Our lovely brewers and local publicans decided to support a charity of our choice. Hythe Environmental Community Group (of which Hythe Hops is part) works closely with The Short Haired Bumblebee Project which is monitoring bumblebee populations and improving pollinator friendly forage from Dungeness to Hythe. The project has been going for 10 years now with the fantastic result that 3 rare bumblebees species have increased in some areas 8 fold and others 3 fold against all UK trends.  Donations from HopFuzz’s “HopBuzz” (see the bee connection??) and “Hythe Green Ale” from Range Ales together with other fundraising has enabled £1300 to be donated to   support this important work. Onwards and upwards And so Hythe Hops celebrates a most enjoyable and satisfactory 1st year. Next year will be much bigger, the plants should almost double their yield and we already have another 30 members ready to join up.  Our hope is that, in addition to Green Hop ale, we might be able to dry hops and so brew beer through the year, and also to pursue bottling or canning to make the produce more broadly available and with a much longer shelf-life. Jenny Davies

A faith-filled adventurer takes-off from Hythe to Juba

Communications Officer Jenny Davies loves sitting in a plane, taking photographs and sharing good news that’s springing up thanks to MAF’s small planes. Next year, she will see first-hand the difference a plane can make, when she moves to South Sudan. I kick crisp autumn leaves along the Hythe Military Canal as I contemplate my impending move to Juba.  There is a chill in the air and the nights are drawing in. Yet I have a sense of expectation as tangible as these glorious autumn colours. Packing for the unknown Christmas will be over and the New Year turned by the time my last bag is packed. Crammed with sandals, summer clothes, camera equipment and small kitchen appliances – including a bread-maker, which I’ve never needed until now with Waitrose on my doorstep – my adventure will begin.  Stocks of hair products (to tame my unruly curls), sun cream and sneaky chocolate bars will be squirreled away.  I’ll be swapping next-day Amazon deliveries for the rhythms of East Central African life where the post never arrives.  World’s Newest Nation South Sudan and its capital Juba became a destination in 2011 when its people voted to separate from the northern half of Sudan. The vote, mandated by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement on 9 January 2005, ended more than 50 years of brutal civil war. It took less than three years for South Sudan’s complex political, social and ethnic legacies to unravel and political self-interest to surface.  Unable to reconcile their agendas, the

Aid trucks get stuck on dirt tracks, which turn to a sea of mud during the wet season.  Accidents are common. Travellers get ambushed by armed bandits and militias. It’s the most dangerous place in the world to be an aid worker. But my faith is drawing me there.  Good News Sadly, good news is hardly heard in the West; stories of the incredible and resilient South Sudanese people praying and working tirelessly for peace.  Stories of MAF flights that save weeks of travel so food and medicine can reach refugee camps.  Stories of a pastor who reaches hurting communities with messages of reconciliation and hope on an MAF plane.    Stories of the child rescued from a lifetime of stigma thanks to a visiting surgeon who repairs a cleft lip.

An Incredible Legacy 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of MAF’s lifesaving work, a movement which emerged out of the ashes of World War II. MAF’s early pioneers were RAF pilots who understood the power of planes to overcome geography and change lives for good after the destruction of war. Among them was Stuart King, who lives in Folkestone and has inspired me and countless others to look up and seek new horizons.   Stuart, an aircraft engineer, started MAF’s first Africa programme in the Sudan back in 1950 with a huge measure of faith and single De Havilland Dragon Rapide. Today, the programme I’m joining, has 8 Cessna aircraft and 63 staff. Globally, MAF operate 131 planes in 27 countries.  I’ll miss my daily commute along the beautiful coast between Hythe and Folkestone, my church fellowship, family, friends, cosy jumpers and a thousand little things.  But I’d take a window seat on a little plane any day, the chance to visit places so remote you won’t find them on Google earth, and the privilege of seeing God’s love in a hurting word.  I have roots and wings.  Follow my journey at https://www.mafuk.org/staff/davies-jenny

These are stories that I want to tell.

Your Garden

Soil

By Jo Wilson

“Be it deep or shallow, red or black, sand or clay, the soil is the link between the rock core of the earth and the living things on its surface. It is the foothold for the plants we grow.” Roy W. Simonson, USDA Yearbook of Agriculture, 1957 According to LandIS; the Land Information System, Hythe and its immediate surrounding areas are made up of different soilscapes: Soilscape 4, which originates from sand dunes and is free draining and lime rich. Soilscape 7, which is slightly acid, base-rich soil. Soilscape 6, slightly acid, loamy soil. Soilscape 21, which is loamy and clayey soils of coastal flats with naturally high groundwater. It is an interesting read if you’re curious, and worth a look initially, especially when considering which plants and flowers to grow, or why existing plants may not be thriving. However, nothing beats doing it yourself; soil is the main support structure which links parent rock and the plants that grow above it. If you get to know your own garden soil, its structure, texture and drainage, it will prevent later and long-term gardening frustrations, and lead to satisfying planting conclusions…hopefully. Doing a squeeze test enables you to establish the type of soil (sand/loam/clay), and therefore its drainage capabilities. If you have a particularly small garden, or one without much exposed soil, just adjust the following according to what you have. If possible, do this after recent rain.

44 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

Dig 10 small holes about 15cm to 20cm deep (6-8 inches) in different areas within the garden, removing a vertical slice of soil from each hole and place into a bucket. As you’re digging, have a look at the colour of the soil and the activity; for instance, if the soil is dark and there’s a fair amount of earthworm activity, this is an indicator of healthy soil, as their activity not only helps improve aeration and drainage, but their castings produce nutrientrich soil with useable nitrogen for the plants.

Put each slice of soil from the bucket into a wheelbarrow, and mix the samples together, shovelling back into the bucket afterwards. mixing samples from different areas of the garden, allows you to take into consideration what affects drainage/activity. For instance, soil under a tree is likely to be dryer than bare soil, because of the roots using up available water. Soil near shrubs/flowers is likely to have a network of fibrous roots running through it, so may also be dryer and have less soil content. Bare soil patches allow you to see what the ground is like unused/undisturbed. Once the mixed soil is back in the bucket, roll up a handful of moist soil into about the size of a golf ball with both hands and squeeze it.

If it collapses without forming, it’s a sandy soil. If the ball shapes to the form of your hand with an extra squeeze, it’s clay soil. If the ball keeps its form quite well, but cracks slightly under pressure, it’s likely to be loamy. Double check by squeezing a small amount between your finger and thumb, if it feels gritty, it’s sand; powdery is loamy and slippery/sticky is clay. It is from this point you will be able to accurately research how to improve your soil, if it’s overly sandy or clayey, or sit back and smile at the loamy, nutrient-rich ground beneath your feet. Enjoy!

Signs of Improvement for the Cannons After a torrid start to the season which led to the departure of manager Sam Denly, the Cannons appear to be stabilising under the stewardship of new manager Steve Watt. Whilst there hasn’t been a major turnaround in respect of results, those who have watched Hythe this season will have noticed a big difference in performances. This has been due in part to Watt bringing in some much needed experience into the side with players such as Jamie Coyle, Alex Flisher and Kiernan Hughes-Mason joining the club. I have only watched Hythe live twice this season, the first being the 1-0 home defeat to Whitehawk (when Sam Denly was at the helm) and the second the exciting and hard fought draw against Whyteleafe in early November. The latter game saw the Cannons battling back from being 2 goals and a man down in the first ten minutes to a 2 all draw and being unlucky not to snatch the winner. The difference between the Hythe of early August/ September to where they are today is significant. Hopefully with the new players bedding in results will improve further and the Cannons can mount a charge for the play offs.

Beat that Bloated Feeling this Boxing Day Christmas is many things to many people and everybody has their own traditions and ways of celebrating the festive season. One constant in pretty much everybody’s Christmas is excessive eating and drinking. Whilst most people address the inevitable new bulge in their waistline in the New Year , if you are feeling energetic on Boxing Day there are a couple of firmly established local sporting events to help you work off the previous days epic eating and drinking!
