Welcome to the autumn edition of Hythe Life Magazine. The temperature is dropping, and the nights are drawing in. We have produced another packed edition which we hope will entertain you. Thinking back to warmer times, it was fantastic to see everybody at the We Love Hythe Life Food Festival 2021 over the August bank holiday. No doubt everybody wants to make up for last year and we have included some ways you can help those who are struggling at what is an expensive time of year. We are proud to be running our reverse advent calendar campaign again and also have details of a local toy drive. We are also pleased to have helped fund the town’s Christmas lights this year. Hythe Civic Sunday – The Mayors Civic Fun Day

by Councillor A Dickinson On Sunday the 19 October Hythe Town Mayor, Naomi Slade, welcomed members of our community to a civic day with a difference. “Civic Sunday”- where the © Shirley Johnson Photography Mayor and councillors pledge their allegiances and best efforts to the town- in the past has been an event largely unnoticed by the community, outside of a select few elected officials and invited VIP guests. After a year of restrictions and many cancelled events, Naomi and her Deputy Mayor Jim Martin felt that our belated civic day 2021 should be a day for the whole town to come together, in the most inclusive way possible. Under blessedly bright skies in Oaklands park, councillors, the Town Sergeant and the Town Clerk convened to welcome the community to enjoy an afternoon of family fun, entertainment and refreshments, tea and cake served by our hard-working councillors and hot food from Streetz2Sreetz. In keeping with tradition, the Mayor dedicated herself and her fellow councillors to their duties, supported by Lieutenant Susan ShorlandCompton of the Salvation Army, who led a prayer of blessing for the town. After that the afternoon swung into entertainment and family fun. Music was provided by the Folkestone and Hythe U3A Swing Band, followed by The Kent Police Band. Entertainment for children was offered by Paul Norris with his hilarious, traditional Punch and Judy show and the Scouts provided circus-skills training all afternoon.

Local community organisations came out in force to share their great work, including the Hythe Rotary, Guides Association and Hythe Environmental Community Group. Mayor Naomi Slade presented a special award to the Hythe Civic Society in honour of their 75th +1 anniversary and their hugely successful series of events over the summer.
This really was an event about getting behind the people of Hythe who do so much to make our town such a super place to live. Here’s hoping this fantastic day will provide a template for future, even bigger, better civic day events.

This summer saw eleven incredible bands and solo artists performing at Oaklands bandstand. Despite the unpredictable, often wet weather, every performance attracted large crowds who sang, danced and sheltered under trees and umbrellas during downpours. The line up included a diverse range of genres, kicking off with blues band ‘Harry and the Beans,’ 60s and 70s music from ‘Edison Lighthouse,’ pop, rock and emo from ‘SKIES,’ ‘Gumboots Reggae Band’ and the gentle piano and vocals of ‘Abi Orfila.’ Hythe bandstand favourites ‘Elvis,’ ‘The Dulcettes,’ ‘Here Come the Girls,’ ‘U3A Swing Band’ and ‘One for the Road’ also performed, with a fitting season finale from ‘Hythe Town Concert Band.’ Although ‘Kent Police Band’ had to cancel due to rain, we were pleased they were able to perform on Civic Sunday. A massive thank you to all the performers and everyone who came out to support them. Plant-Base Council / PETA Award As another logical step in our climate and ecological crises response, Hythe Town Council voted to become a plant-based council. This means that we will only serve plant-based food and drinks at all council functions. Moving to plant-based catering for all council functions is another important step in reducing the council's carbon footprint. Plant-based foods have the smallest carbon footprints. Producing meat, fish, eggs, cheese and milk emits more greenhouse gases than producing their plant-based equivalents. Animal-exploiting industries are also major contributors to rainforest deforestation, other habitat destruction, drought, and water and air pollution. The Committee on Climate Change recommends that people reduce their meat and dairy consumption and encourages the public sector to lead the shift to less carbon-intensive diets. “The science speaks for itself – a plant-based diet significantly reduces greenhouse gas-emissions. With consumption of meat and dairy fuelling global warming and habitat destruction, including of rain forests for feed and grazing, this was an obvious, easy, sensible and cost-free step to take.” – Martin Whybrow, Hythe Town Council
Kent Association Local Council – Community Awards Scheme The Right Worshipful Mayor of Hythe, Councillor Naomi Slade, presented the Kent Association of Local Council Community, KALC, Awards to the nominees that had been put forward for the KALC Community Awards Scheme 2020 and 2021, who had made a significant contribution to the local community.
Update to Hythe Play Areas
Jackie Mortimer (right) of Instep, Brockhill Performing Arts, was awarded her certificate in 2021 for all the work she has done over the years with youngster in Dance. Hayley Ross, on the left, and her team at Hythe Community Support Hub, were awarded in 2021 for their tireless work in supporting the most vulnerable people in our community during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The wheels of local government often do not turn quickly but the process is almost finally complete by which Hythe Town Council will take over the leases from the District Council for three additional play areas - at Reachfields, St George's Place and on the Bird Estate. This will trigger a major review of these and all existing play areas, to look at the current equipment and what is needed to improve each area. If you have particular thoughts about what you would like to see to enhance any of the play areas then please do let us know. The others, which are already managed by HTC, are the Green, Oaklands, Horn Street, and Burmarsh Recreation Ground.

Hythe Christmas Partnership Now that the summer is officially over, we’re looking ahead towards Christmas and speaking to organisations across Hythe about plans for the festive season. Celebrations might be a little different this year, focussing on smaller scale events on Saturdays rather than one single large event. We hope that partnering with community minded organisations such as Hythe Life Magazine, Rotary, and Hythe Business and Tourism Assosiation will help create inclusive events that bring renewed energy and a spirit of unity to our High Street and the community.
Armed Forces Covenant
Cinque Ports Speakers Day The Town of Hythe is one of the original five Cinque Ports and our Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Town Clerk were delighted to represent our town at the recent Cinque Ports Speaker’s Day. New Romney are the Speaker this year and Hythe will take its turn to be speaker next year. The day, although rainy was full of pageant and tradition, the Deputy Lord Warden and the Lord Warden’s Chaplin lead event which was historic but forward looking. Paul Thomas, the Mayor of New Romney, will hand over the Speakership to the Mayor of Hythe in May, next year. The Speaker acts as chairman and principal representative of the Confederation. The office is held (ex officio) by the mayor of each of the head ports and two ancient towns, in turn. It passes from one town to the next, on 21 May each year, by a process quaintly described as ‘septennial revolution’. It is not known exactly when the office was first created, but it has certainly existed continuously since 1357. It is older than the Speakership of the House of Commons, which dates from 1376. For centuries, these were the only two offices with that title but, in more recent times, it has been adopted for the chairperson of a number of legislatures based on the Westminster model and, since 2006, for the presiding officer of the UK House of Lords who replaced the Lord Chancellor in that role.
On the 24 June 2021, The Right Worshipful Mayor of Hythe, Councillor Naomi Slade, signed the Armed Forces Covenant, witnessed by her daughter Eilah and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Jim Martin. "As Mayor of Hythe I was delighted and honoured to sign the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of the Town. Hythe has a long and illustrious history in supporting our Armed Forces which continues to this day". The Armed Forces Covenant commits the council to support the armed forces community and to recognise the value that serving personnel, both regular and reservists, veterans and military families contribute to our business and community.

The biggest project we have been working on this year is the Amazing Christmas lights, we have over 1.5 miles of light going up and down the High street. As you can imagine this is a mammoth task and requires a lot of funding. To discuss how we are going to go about raising funds for the lights this year and in the future, organisations are invited to meet at the council offices. We are hoping to fund other Christmas events this year and in the future to so have been coming up with ideas on how we can spread some much needed festive cheer over the season. Hythe Life Magazine has donated over a third of the money needed for the Lights in previous years and are hoping they will this year, the collaborative with the HBTA raises a sizable amount. The remaining money is hoped to be raised from support of other organisations and crowd funding. After being out of physical contact with each other for such a long time, Hythe Rotary Club members were again able to hold one of their regular meetings at Etchinghill Golf Club. We felt comfortable enough to invite guests and friends, including Hythe Town Clerk and representatives of Hythe Salvation Army and Hythe Business & Tourism Association (HBTA). During these past months we have been maintaining our relationships with many organisations, especially HBTA with whom we are forging closer ties aimed at working together for the general benefit of our local community. HBTA, in cooperation with Hythe Rotary and Hythe Civic Society and with the support of Hythe Town Council, has produced a new edition of the Hythe Visitor Guide, which is available in shops, hotels, B&B establishments, restaurants and tourist attractions in our local area. Hythe Venetian Fete 17th August 2022 For the first time in many years the Hythe Venetian fete sadly had to be postponed, from the planned date in 2021, due to the government Covid restrictions. However, the great news is that planning is already underway for a Venetian fete to be held next year on the Royal Military canal in Hythe. Gates will open on Wednesday 17th August 2022, at 4pm. This fete, which was first held in 1890, has continued to be enjoyed by thousands of spectators watching some 30 decorated and illuminated floats parading along Military canal between Twiss Road and Ladies Walk Bridge at dusk and in the evening. The parade is accompanied by bands and musicians (who are also on floats) and there is a spectacular firework display as night falls. There are five hours of spectacle and entertainment, with food and refreshment stalls available, plus a fun fair on the canal bank. If you have ever thought about taking part in the fete and entering your own float, then 2022 could be the year that you do it! Entries are accepted on a first come first served basis from January 1st and are open until all spaces are filled. There is then a reserve list in case an entry withdraws. Entries are welcome from everybody, there are classes to accommodate private entries, clubs, associations, and companies. If you have not entered before you will be asked to pay a small returnable deposit; and if your entry is not commercial, then in most cases a small grant toward building your float display is paid after you have competed.

You will be provided with the float and base and then it is up to you to come up with a theme and build your float display ready for both the day-time parade and the night-time illuminated parade. Entry forms will be made available and downloaded from http://www.hythe-venetianfete.com and should be emailed once completed to chairman@hythevenetioanfete.co.uk or hand delivered to c/o Collier Stevens, 1st Floor, The Old Auction Rooms, Marine Walk Street, Hythe CT21 5NW.
There are other ways to get involved too. The fete requires about 200 volunteers for the event, for example to act as stewards, sell programmes, and to help where required. The fete committee is always so very grateful to the volunteers who help, so if you would like to be a volunteer, please contact the email address above and let us know. Ticket sales for general entry will start online on May 1st.

Christmas Toy Appeal The Christmas Story inspires us as a church and charity to reach out to those in need, so we’re running the Christmas Present Appeal to ensure every child gets a present in our district and help to make Christmas special for those who may have little or nothing under the tree on Christmas morning. Local residents are being called upon to help make this festive dream a reality. People are invited to drop off a new, unused toy for a child aged 0 to 16 years at one of the local donation points in Hythe and Romney Marsh from 15th November until 10th December. The Salvation Army will sort and distribute the gifts to children and families in this area through The Salvation Army’s own networks, local groups, and social services. Gifts can include anything from soft and educational toys for the very youngest child, to games, toys and accessories for older children. 0-3 years: soft toys, colourful and fun educational toys, cot mobiles, baby clothes, bath toys. 3-5 years: books, dressing up clothes, cars, lorries, dolls, action figures and soft toys, colourful and fun educational toys, suitable DVDS, colouring sets, pencils, crayons, books, puzzles, footballs. 5-9 years: dolls and action figures, educational games and toys, stationery (colouring sets, pencils, crayons, school sets), family friendly DVDs, books, puzzles, word search, crosswords, skateboards, sports equipment and clothing.
9-12 years: games and toys, sports equipment and clothing, stationery, DVDs, books, T-Shirts, hair ornaments, gloves, scarves, hats. 13-16 years: DVDs, books, toiletries (please try to ensure non-allergic ingredients if possible), gloves, scarves, hats and other fashion accessories.
In addition to the Christmas Present Appeal, Hythe Salvation Army will be opening its doors on Christmas Day for anyone who would appreciate a meal and to celebrate Christmas in the company of others. everse Advent Calender For the last five years, our Reverse Advent Calendar Campaign has been a huge success and has helped provide a lifeline for local residents well into the New Year. We’re bringing it back again for 2021! The idea is a really simple but lovely one that draws upon the tradition of opening an advent calendar window every day in December from 1st-24th. What we’re asking you to do is to pop something from the shopping list below into a box each day in December. This will then be donated to our local food bank to help local individuals and families who find themselves in crisis over Christmas and into the New Year. Interview with Susan
The Salvation Army

In the last edition of Hythe Life, we talked to the departing Callum McKenna, Hythe Salvation Army Church & Community Centre Corps Officer and Church Leader, after his seven years in our community. In this edition, we were delighted catch up with his replacement, Susan Shorland-Compton. Susan explains that she is a long-standing “Salvationist” as this has always been her church. She spent 30+ years in the armed forces as a musician, with the Womens’ Royal Army Corp and then the Royal Air Force. It was in the RAF that Susan met her husband, David, one part of the new team that has joined us here in Hythe. When we meet, he is off to get provisions for the fortnightly meeting of the Salvation Army youth group that evening. Meanwhile, water is dripping through the roof of the Salvation Army Hall after a downpour that morning. Susan plays the French horn and piano. Her career saw her travel the world and, on occasions, rub shoulders with royalty and other famous people. It meant she also moved around a bit, living in Guildford, Uxbridge and then Sleaford in Lincolnshire. She is originally from Dawlish in Devon. It was while living in Sleaford that Susan stepped in for a couple of years when the Salvation Army was lacking a Corps Officer. She had previously been Corps Sergeant Major but was now more involved in day-to-day activities. At the time, with her son at school, she had retired from the RAF but was a music examiner. David was also retired by this time. Three and a half years ago, she says, she felt the call to become a full-time Corps Officer and embarked on the two-year residential training at the Army’s centre in Denmark Hill (where Callum is now based). Susan and David already knew Hythe when she was allocated it as her first placement after college. For one thing, she has a sister in Rye. “We really welcomed it. It was on the coast, near family, and we had heard really good things about the Corps here.” In fact, everywhere she has been since arriving she has – of course – heard only praise for the wonderful work that Callum and Berri did here.

Callum has remained on call to offer any advice and help. “We have settled in really well, we love the town and community,” says Susan. It has been a very warm welcome, she adds. It seems clear she is already immersed in the community. Following on from Callum, she is now Hythe Town Council mayor’s chaplain for this year and many will have seen her recent eloquent and lovely address at the Civic Sunday

The Importance

Most of us never really like to confront our mortality. But all of us want to take care of our loved ones once we have passed away. We’ve worked hard over a lifetime to build up certain assets, and we want to ensure our loved ones gain maximum benefit on our passing. When thinking about Wills, most of us think about how much we should be passing onto our loved ones. But this is not the only thing that’s important. In fact, it’s also crucial to ensure our assets are well protected and secure over the course of our lifetime so that our loved ones receive the maximum inheritance when we are gone. 50% of the UK adult population are without a Will Yes, that’s correct. More than half the adult population have not made any provisions for how their assets should be handled after their death. Low quality There is also evidence that nearly 25% of Wills drafted by solicitors failed to achieve the desired quality. To this end, the Solicitors Regulation Authority has produced will-writing guidance which you can find on their site. Key Problems One of the problems we’ve uncovered is in the area of Sideways Disinheritance which affects thousands of families every year. Assets meant for children or other beneficiaries are often diverted away from the desired inheritance line due to one of many possible events in life that will affect most families at some point. For example, in a married family, if a spouse

remarries after becoming widowed, the potential for step families to inherit the family fortune is highly likely without good planning prior to becoming widowed. Over the years, what we have found so frustrating is that the deceased’s person’s wishes were not being fulfilled according to their instructions. And this is all so avoidable. Even more discouraging is when we find out that the value of somebody’s estate has been significantly diluted after they have passed due to expensive deductions (made by lawyers and other advisors). A beneficiary can also be subject to significant delays before they receive their inheritance. In many instances, we find that people are not receiving the vital assistance and advice required for considering every eventuality which might adversely affect their wishes. Sometimes, unfortunate things happen in life. For example, when writing your will, did you even think what would happen if one of your beneficiaries divorced, went bankrupt or suffered a major illness? All these eventualities effect how your will and planning should be prepared.
The fact is that most professional advisors do not make people aware of all the possible scenarios and all the possible options open to them. So, the individual might think they have peace of mind when writing their will, when in fact it transpires that their loved ones were not looked after according to their instructions after they had passed away. All the issues can be avoided – with a little thought and some careful planning. Taking into account all the different possible scenarios throughout yours or your beneficiaries’ lives is vital, especially when it comes to DIY wills, online wills or even certain wills drawn up by solicitors. These are of particular focus for us because we find that they do not include a range of eventualities. But how do I know what type of will to set up? None of us have a crystal ball in life, so it is essential you make time to sit down with a competent professional who really understands the range of different options and scenarios so that you feel fully protected. After all, the last thing you want is to discover that your wishes weren’t fulfilled or that the value of your estate has eroded beyond your expectations due to legal fees due to the addition of some unforeseen scenario.

Hythe District Photographic Club ‘August in Hythe’

Hythe District Photographic Club has embarked on the most ambitious project in its 10 year history. To celebrate this anniversary, the Club is in the process of publishing a book of photographs taken by Club members during the month of August 2021.
‘Foody Fans’ - Tom Lloyd ‘August in Hythe (Through the Eyes of its Members)’ captures the people and activities of the town throughout the month. The Cinque Port Town of Hythe has a long and illustrious history and today its unique charm continues to captivate residents and visitors alike. The Town has a rich maritime past that continues to this day, where we can enjoy its extensive seafront promenade, the beach, its small commercial fishing fleet, its active sailing club and other sports facilities. Allied to these are the attractions of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, the Royal Military Canal and a bustling High Street, all of which provide the people of the town with a special environment in which to live and work. It is these distinctive features, which the photographic club attempted to capture, as residents and visitors went about their daily lives. August was chosen as it represented a new start for the town after the ravages of the Covid-19 global pandemic. The removal of restrictions on our lives from late July enabled everyone to cautiously emerge from the deprivations of lockdown and start the journey back to normality. The book endeavours to capture this historic moment. Photographs are a great memory prompt. Those of us of a certain age enjoy looking at the photographs of Hythe taken 5O years ago that frequently crop up on local social media

sites and the press. They transport us back to mostly happy times and we fondly reminisce about how things looked back then: the fashions, the cars and buildings. In the same way, we hope that ‘August in Hythe’ will evoke similar memories for young people who may look at the book in 50 years time. No doubt, by then, much will have changed and technology, environmental concerns and attitudes will have shaped a very different world to the one we know now. That is why we hope the book will provide pleasure now to its readers as well as providing an important historical document for future generations. It is planned that ‘August in Hythe’ will be available locally from early October. All profits from the book will go to two local charities: The Pilgrims Hospice and Hythe Dementia Awareness Forum. Preparation of the book has been a major undertaking for our small Club and we are indebted to our sponsor, Hythe Life Magazine, for its unstinting support and guidance in printing and distribution. Over the threshold Record Inheritance Tax bills are a reminder of the need for good estate planning
T
here are few more confusing – or unpopular – taxes than Inheritance Tax (IHT). In October 2019, HM Revenue and Customs published Estimated Costs of Tax Reliefs indicating further confusion and inertia as it expects to see a 19% increase in IHT revenues over the next four years. For older generations, paying up to 40% tax on what they leave behind is dif昀cult to contemplate. For some children and grandchildren, grappling with IHT is something they are ill-equipped to do. Yet more and more families are having to deal with IHT. The latest 昀gures show that IHT receipts reached £5.1 billion in the 2019/2020 tax year, according to an HMRC tax report published in May 2020.
Once considered a tax on the truly af昀uent, IHT now affects more estates than ever
Although a fall of £0.4 billion from the previous year, this was likely due to the increase in the residence nil-rate band threshold, which has been introduced in stages since 2017-18.
It will undoubtedly come as a shock to discover that a large proportion of your wealth, which includes the family home, investments including Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs), life assurance plans not in trust, and even old family heirlooms might actually have to be sold to meet the tax liability on death. The previous rises in receipts largely re昀ected the surge in residential property prices, as well as the recovery in other asset values, which has dragged more households into the IHT net. From April 2020, the residence nil-rate band rose to £175,000, for those who qualify. Coupled with the fact that up to the 昀rst £325,000 of an individual’s estate may be exempt from IHT, this will mean that, subject to certain conditions, a married couple and civil partners could have a combined tax-free estate worth £1,000,000 in the 2020/2021 tax year. Despite this, at the heart of this problem remains the simple fact that IHT could be considered a voluntary tax; the Treasury relies on inertia and people’s reluctance to confront the issue. The boost to the Treasury’s coffers is a reminder of the damaging effect death duties can have on families’ plans to create and pass on wealth. There are many perfectly
legitimate ways of mitigating IHT through foresight and careful 昀nancial planning. The mitigation of IHT does not require highpowered tax planning; only a willingness to discuss the issue, act and make use of the many options available, establishing trusts* where appropriate; and making use of annual exemptions such as gifting.
With careful IHT planning, more wealth could be retained to support future generations The rules surrounding IHT on individuals domiciled in the UK – or resident – are complex. Certain transfers are also deemed exempt from the tax if they pass between a husband and wife or civil partners. If you are uncertain about where you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to minimise the sums falling into the hands of HMRC, or your local authority through long-term care fees, you should seek advice. The inaugural We Love Hythe Life Food Festival was held at Hythe Green on the August bank holiday weekend, 28th, 29th and 30th August from 11am-7pm Saturday and Sunday, 11am-6pm Monday. The three-day event consisted of over 65 food, beverage and craft stalls and showcased a fantastic range of local musical talent throughout the event.

Thank You everyone who came, ate, drank, and supported the We Love Hythe Life Food Festival on the August Bank Holiday. Hythe Green didn’t disappoint the weather even held out and gave the event an extra bit of sparkle. What a bank holiday weekend it was, full of different foods, drinks, crafts, and local musical talents. Organised by Hythe Life Team, the event aimed to support the hospitality and street food market to get back into the swing of it. We felt that the festival provided much needed relief from the pandemic and covid lockdowns that had dogged us all for the past few months. The festival's ethos centres around local, sustainable shopping and eating. The exhibitors made huge adjustments to prepare and produce delicious food to bring back the street food culture and to come together to host a fun filled weekend for our community. There was something for everyone!

CHICKPEA & POTATO CURRY by Hemanshu Patel It is time to leave behind t-shirts and summer salads and invest in cardigans and comforting traditional curries. Here is one of my go to dishes that will make you look forward to eating in, rather than going out. My curry should get you through the next few months in style!
Ingredients • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or sunflower oil • 1 onion diced
• 450 grams potatoes peeled and cubed
• 2 cloves garlic minced
• 1 tin chickpeas
• 1 inch ginger root grated
• 1 cup water
• 1 green chilli • 1 teaspoon garam masala
• 1 can chopped tomatoes tinned
• ½ teaspoon turmeric
• ½ teaspoon salt
• ½ teaspoon of red chilli powder
• Chopped coriander to garnish
• 1 teaspoon ground cumin
Method • In a large saucepan, heat oil and sauté onions with ginger and chilli until the onions are soft and translucent. Now Add garlic and cook for 1 more minute or until its fragrant. • Now add the potatoes and cook for about 5-7 Minutes and cover with a lid. • Add tin tomatoes, then refill the same can with water and add the water to the pot. • Add the spices, cook and keep stirring for 2 more minute or until fragrant. • Add chickpeas. Bring to boil, reduce the heat and let it simmer until the potatoes become soft. • Serve over rice and garnish with chopped coriander.

VAGHARELI KHICHDI by Hemanshu Patel
The penultimate Comfort food as we enter the autumn. This is a true family favourite when feeling like you want a quick but spicy food that just gives you that real comfort on those cold autumn days.
Ingredients • 65g of basmati rice
• 1 medium Tomato chopped
• 65g Arhar dal (toor dal or split pigeon peas) • 2 tablespoons Oil
• 1 cup Fresh or frozen tuvar dana (Green pigeon peas or lilva)
• ½ teaspoon Mustard seeds
• ½ teaspoon of salt
• ½ teaspoon Cumin seeds
• ½ teaspoon Turmeric powder
• 2 Cloves
• 1 ½ teaspoons Red chili powder
• 3 Black peppercorns • 1 inch Cinnamon stick • 1 Dried red chilly • 1 small Red onion chopped • ½ inch Ginger • 2 cloves Garlic • 1 Fresh Green chilli can add more if you like it spicy
Method Preparation: • Wash dal, rice combined and then soak for about 15 minutes. Discard the soaking water. • Crush the ginger, garlic and green chilli into a paste. Put this to one side. Making Vaghareli Khichdi Recipe: • Heat the oil in a pressure cooker on medium heat. Once hot add mustard seeds, once they splutter add cumin seeds and let them sizzle. You should hear them pop. • Then sauté the whole spices (cloves, peppercorns, cinnamon stick, and dried red chilli) for about a minute. • Now mix in onion, crushed ginger, garlic, Fresh Green chilli. Cook till onions are soft and translucent. • Add tuvar dana and tomatoes. Mix well. • Add spice powders (turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, garam masala) along with salt. Mix and cook for a minute. • Now mix in soaked dal-rice and 600ml of water. • Cover with pressure cooker lid, cook for 3-4 whistles on medium heat. • Then turn off the stove. Once pressure releases naturally, open the lid, mix and serve can be etten with fresh Greek Yogurt.

Family Support Fund
The Hythe Life team would like to offer a contribution to 6 families from Hythe this Christmas. The contribution would be worth £50 in the form of a food parcel delivered by the team, to a nominated address. We will contact the nominated families for a shopping list of their choosing, to be delivered Christmas week. The Hythe Life team know its been a difficult time for families all over the world, the pandemic has bought about all sorts of extra stressors and issues that people didn’t foresee before Covid 19. Families have experienced great loss and changes to family life, that have given a new set of challenges to deal with. This has affected adults just as much as children within the family home. We would like to give something back and support a family at Christmas, the aim is to take some of the pressure off and to support you as a local family in Hythe. Extreme times have caused extreme circumstances and everyone has been affected by this pandemic in some way. If you know a family that maybe has struggled with employment, a single parent family who has been working every hour to manage, someone who has gone above and beyond to ensure that their community is cared for or young carers who have shown outstanding strength, we want your nominations. We want to hero people in our
community and show that as a community we can support each other, and be a helping hand when it is needed most.

Thoughts on Meditation by Martin Whybrow
There are many ways of coping with stress and a lot of these have come into sharp focus given the year or so that we’ve just experienced. What has made a huge difference to me is meditation. My wife could clearly see a bit too much stress at times and gave me ‘Mindfulness on the Go’ by Padraig O’Morain. It took me a while to get round to reading it – I was too busy, which was one clear cause of the stress! However, I then had a long train journey and finally opened it. My meditation journey started almost from that moment. By the end of the train trip I was already viewing the world through a somewhat altered lense. I have now been meditating for over three years. Amidst all of the reading I’ve been doing around the subject I love the observation by author, Jim Green, that, “There is no wisdom tradition that hasn’t led to this common language of stillness, simplicity and silence”. He

describes it as, “Softening the walls of our small, over-defended self; letting it at last become permeable; allowing our consciousness, with its temporarily limited capacity to love and to be loved, unite with the limitless”. There’s lots of good advice out there. We meditate to get good at life, not to get good at meditation so should not let perfect be the enemy of good. We are always beginning in meditation and there will be natural peaks and troughs along the way, some days deeper than others. It is a practice that seems to have absolutely no down-sides. At the very least it can lead to better mental and physical health, whether or not it is part of a spiritual journey. Catholic priest and Benedictine monk, Laurence

miracle of consciousness and connectedness with everything. We come to focus on the now, released from endless preoccupation on the past and future, and we come to appreciate space and silence. “The stillness and vastness that enables the universe to be is also in us,” said Eckhart Tolle, author of the highly influential book, “The Power of Now”. I have found a powerful connection to my body, particularly the heart. I agree with author, Jules Evans: “I really do feel the heart is a spiritual organ of great, mysterious power. It is not just an organ of feeling but of knowing.”
Freeman, said: “Meditation is as natural to our whole person as breathing is to the body… meditation is the kindest and most caring thing you can do for yourself.” It is an ideal complement for other practices – in my case, Tai chi and Qi Gong, clearly also for yoga, with these adding some interesting physical “tools” for meditation and with benefits flowing both ways.

There is plenty of help out there, whether apps, online resources or books. For an introduction to the different techniques, I thoroughly recommend Giovanni Dienstmann’s Practical Meditation. Then there is plenty of additional reading, around particular aspects (Jim Green’s Giving up without Giving up, for instance, on meditation and depression) or on deepening meditation. From breath or mantra-based to the many other forms across Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and others, there are so many different meditation techniques. It is fascinating in the early days to try some of these before settling on a few. Mostly I meditate at home but it is also interesting in a group and in different spaces, in nature, in a

Why Shop Local?

Shopping locally makes sense for many reasons. But for me, it makes sense simply because I was raised in a thriving rural community in the 70’s and 80’s. The village of Quainton, nestled just off the A41 between Bicester and Aylesbury, had 4 pubs, a Post Office, an independent “Village Store” selling groceries, a “Corner Shop” selling bric-a-brac ranging from skateboards to sewing kits, and finally a little franchise supermarket. This was when my family moved there in 1975.
Add to that a small warehousing operation packing locally produced potatoes (referred to in the village as the “Potato Factory”), a dealership doing a brisk trade in tractors, and a separate garage that did servicing and sold petrol, commerce really was at the heart of village life.

I moved there when I was 8, after living on the side of a hill in the middle of nowhere for the first 8 years of my life. It was when we moved to Quainton that my life changed. Suddenly I went to a youth club and played competitive sport for the first time ever, after I joined the local football, table tennis and cricket clubs. They were all within walking distance of my home, as was my school. I walked past every one of these businesses every day on my way to school. They were a hive of activity (especially the potato factory), and they all provided good sources of employment to many of my friends’ families. The thing I remember most, though, is being in these Community shops, a lot. Every Friday I hurried to school to see if my name had made the team sheet for the village football team. It was put up in the corner shop window first thing in the morning. One of my best mates lived at the Post Office, and I used to knock for him on my way to school. I recall telling the owner of the Village Stores of my heartache at missing my first penalty on my way home from a game, as I tried to console myself with a can of Coke and several bags of Football Crazy

camaraderie, thereby rebuilding the fabric of our communities and our society that has been gradually eroded over the last two decades and has been exponentially undermined in the last 2 years. This is why we have started the group Shop Local in Kent. We intend to create a vibrant, lively, and supportive community of shoppers and merchants, encouraging everyone to share thoughts and ideas about what we like, where we can get it, and supporting each other in making the stuff we like easier and more fun to get hold of and ultimately use.

that community shops are a fundamental part of any strong community. Be it in a Town, City or Village. Of course, shops provide employment and stimulate the local economy. But they also teach us what is unique about our local area and the region that we live in. I can honestly say that I had never even heard of a Gypsy tart until I saw one in my local shop shortly after I moved to Wateringbury (near Maidstone) in 2003. I was also made instantly aware of the incredible brewing and hop-growing heritage of this area both from old photos on the wall and from talking to people that I bumped into in that same shop every day of the week. That’s why I believe passionately that we must not allow corporate technology companies and Venture Capitalists to undermine our vibrant communities by appealing to our almost insatiable demand for convenience. Dare I suggest laziness? I appreciate that our lives are so, so busy nowadays, but would you dare suggest to a hop picker that their lives were not? Delivery apps masquerade as quite innocent, even helpful, bits of technology, which are at the same time rather clever, slick, and cool. But

Welcome to the Autumn edition of Hythe Life Sports. In this issue we hear from Martin Whybrow how Hythe Town FC are faring in their 2021/2022 season (it’s so good to have local football back again!) and also have reports from both Saltwood CC and Hythe Green CC in respect of their 2021 season. Finally we have a fascinating article from Alastair Griggs in respect of what is best exercise method for losing weight.
FOOTBALL
Cannons Update By Martin Whybrow At the time of writing, the local football season is thankfully in full swing. The only disruption to Hythe Town’s campaign to date has been a midweek postponement at Faversham Town at the end of September due to the fuel shortage. After two aborted seasons due to Covid, this is great news. The club’s regular supporters have been able to take up their places again on the terraces and in their seats, while new supporters have been welcomed. The social side of supporting your local club is a major part of why so many people are attracted to football at this level and was sorely missed by many during lockdown. On the pitch, there’s been the usual mixed fortunes. A three game run in the FA Cup came to an abrupt end with defeat at Dartford – this could not have been a worse draw for the Cannons, away to the highest team in the highest league in the draw at that round. There was also a narrow defeat, on penalties, the following week at Welwyn Garden City in the FA Trophy – but at least it was done in style, on Charlton Athletic’s luxurious team coach! In the league, the team sits mid-table, with wins at VCD Athletic and East Grinstead Town, plus a fine 2-1 victory at home to Sittingbourne. Off the pitch, there is the usual hard work put in by the small group of volunteer directors and helpers – the club always needs more help! The chairman position is currently vacant and the club would be delighted to hear from any individuals or businesses that would like to be involved, on any level.

Which is better for weight loss:
Cardio or Weights? by Alastair “Secret Hummus Lover” Griggs This is a very common question I get, all the time. And here’s the answer in short…None of them. Here’s the thing, many people are worrying about cardio or weights for fat loss, but that’s not the biggest issue people have when they’re overweight. Sure, it can help but it’s not the biggest return for investment. The biggest issue when being overweight is over consumption of calories. Say what you like “Alastair, I don’t eat that much and I don’t lose weight” Unfortunately you do. You might not think it, but coaching over 300 overweight clients over the last 4 years, it's what the majority of them were doing. It may not feel like you’re eating a lot, but the calories in certain foods will be very high. Classic example… hummus. People tend to have hummus, they say “it’s healthy” (which is it from a nutritional standpoint but it's very calorie dense) 1 whole pot of hummus is 690 kcals. Now, eating a pot of that with bread sticks (is seen more as a snack) but it’s calorie value is sky HIGH. Doesn't mean, DON'T eat it. It's just about making you more aware.
So, when people ask me about cardio or weights for weight loss I ask “what do you enjoy the most?” Then, whatever it is... do that. If you enjoy both, do both. I’m slightly more bias towards weights because the longevity of doing weights helps prevent
muscle deterioration as you get older and it improves joints health (keeping you out of a wheelchair or needing a Zimmer frame). Also, if you’re a cardio lover (say for instance, you love running) doing 1 to 2 weights sessions per week, not only helps improve your recovery time and helps prevent yourself from injuries but it will actually help to improve your time and endurance. I have a lot of runners that come to AGF Fitness that improve their running times by a dramatic amount. But in summary… Cardio or weights for fat loss… do what you enjoy. If you’re wanting to lose weight, manage your calories first. That is where the best return for investment will be for you. Focusing on what exercise is best won’t help in the grand scheme of things, it can but that’s not the full issue. Manage your calories and alongside that, introduce fitness you enjoy.

CRICKET
Hythe Green CC By Martin Whybrow Hythe Green Cricket Club’s league season went right to the wire. On 18th September the club welcomed Walmer in the Kent Regional Cricket League Division 3 East. This fixture had been postponed earlier in the season due to a Covid outbreak at the visitors and Hythe Green needed to win to secure promotion and second place in the league.
There was also a successful, although rain hit, tour to Leicestershire once more. And the indoor season will start shortly at the Three Hills sports centre in Folkestone, which is always enjoyable. The club has a long history, having been formed in 1870, and now ground shares at Saltwood CC. A convincing seven wicket win capped another successful season for the Green, with a second consecutive promotion. Walmer were restricted to 199 for 8 off their 40 overs and Hythe knocked them off with just three wickets down, with club stalwarts Simon and James Rose at the crease at the end (58 and 34 not out respectively). That promotion had been set up by fine consecutive wins in the previous few weekends against Ramsgate and Sheldwich. Leading the way with the bat was Cameron Emanuel-Burns once more, with a phenomenal average of 61, with three league centuries. Next highest run scorers were the club’s big hitter, James Whybrow, and the two Roses. Club captain, Alan Smith, was the leading league wicket taker (31 wickets at just 13.61) followed by the welcome spin addition this season of Nick Bonthuys, followed by another act spinner (but the club’s worst umpire!), Duncan Bernard. Other welcome additions, bringing youth to the club’s ranks, were Oli King and Nathan Roberts; Izaak Bernard went from strength to strength; and it was great to have contributions from Ben and Tom Stone on Sundays – the club looks in good hands!
Saltwood CC By Ian Oakes It was a great season for SCC, with cricket making a full return after a shortened 2020 season. Lots of Covid rules and regulations were in place but everyone still enjoyed their cricket. Junior cricket was limited but those that were able to come along had a great time. 2022 will be even better so please visit www.saltwoodcc.com/colts for more information and links to sign up. Big things will be happening over the winter, new and improved practice nets, new kitchen and general pavilion renovations. A Ramble Through the History of
Saltwood Cricket Club by Geoff Cooke
Part 2 | 1945 Onwards
The Saltwood club continued to play on the Brockhill School field after the Second World War but records are sparse with no scores and fixture cards until 1951. The first match played was interesting because Saltwood were all out for 8 at Newington. This game was remembered clearly by Peter Saunders who was playing. The club was asked to leave in 1954 as the school required the ground for more pupil use. A chance meeting on Sandling station with Lord Clark of Saltwood Castle and a phone call to him from the chairman Jack Fakley resulted in us using the field on Tanners Hill. A small ‘peppercorn‘ rent was agreed thanks to the generosity of Lord Clark. Work was started on the square and play resumed in 1956, with the official opening of the pavilion in the presence of Lord Clark and club officials on May 5th. See photo. Although the new wicket was not always reliable, games were low scoring but enjoyed by all the members. Bowlers often returned excellent figures but good batsmen were still getting runs. Scores from matches and averages are available in the club records. Most of the players were villagers living in Saltwood in this era, but gradually members came from further afield. The East Kent coach for away matches was replaced with private cars as people became more affluent. The only drawback was that the stop at the nearest pub on the way home was restricted somewhat. The 1960s and 70s were a very successful time as far as results and excitement were concerned. In 1964 in a match v Martin Walters something very unusual happened. After Saltwood had made 216 runs in their innings, we bowled the opposition out for nothing - yes they did not score any runs and were all out in 25 minutes. This was national news the next day and resulted in an item in a TV programme hosted by Harry Carpenter. Full details of this amazing feat are documented in the Club records.
