Hythe Watch NEWS FROM HY THE TOWN COUNCIL

The Speakership Comes to Hythe Cllr Malcolm Dearden Mayor of Hythe 2000-2002 and Speaker of the Cinque Ports 2001-2002 Hythe is one of the original five ports recognised by Edward the Confessor that provided ships and men as defence of the realm at sea. Over the years, other towns joined in and there are now 14 towns in the Confederation stretching along the Kent coast into East Sussex. How you pronounce ‘Cinque’ is important … “Who names us Sank and not our Sink is forever a foe. His Ships be engaged and after bloody battle, sunk. No prisoners be taken.” The 5 Head Ports and 2 Antient Towns provide the Speaker and it changes every year. The other seven towns are called limbs and do not hold the office. On May 21st 2022 the Speakership will pass from New Romney to Hythe and whoever is the Mayor of Hythe will become the Speaker for the next 12 months.

The Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports is Admiral Lord Boyce and it is the Lord Warden who presides over the Confederation as a royal officer. Historically, in the absence of the Lord Warden, the Speaker chairs all meetings of the confederation and its courts and summons members to meetings.

The Mayors, Town Clerks and Town Sergeants progress into Lympne Castle between the Grenadier Guards. Photo courtesy of Cllr M Dearden.

What I want to do is to give some flavour of my year as Speaker which was 2001 to 2002. 2002 was the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen and we had a Jubilee Fair in Oaklands. It was a very busy year and I was privileged to represent the Town on a number of civic occasions, ranging from events at Lambeth Palace and a degree ceremony for the students of Christchurch University at Canterbury Cathedral, to being a guest of the Chief of General staff on board the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious at the Festival of the Sea in Portsmouth. On the ‘Speakers Day’ the Mayors of all the Confederation towns attend. In 2001 Grenadier guards provided an escort and the Band of the Gurkha Brigade played music culminating in a reception at Lympne Castle. The Lord Warden at that time was Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and every year she invited all the Mayors to a reception at Walmer castle. In 2002 we heard the sad news of her death and I was deeply honoured to represent Hythe at her funeral at Westminster Abbey. During the year, the Mayor, Councillors and Town staff all worked together to carry on the functions of the Town, including agreeing a grant for the new extension for Age Concern, providing a hard surface playing area and new footpaths on The Green, applying for a grant of £240,000 for projects within the Town, installing a stairlift in the Town Hall and introducing an informal recreational area at Eaton Lands and tree planting and wildflowers in the Northern meadow. A very full and enjoyable year.

Exciting news for Horn Street Recreation Ground Councillor Anita Jones & Councillor Jenni Hawkins The recreation ground in Horn Street has been Seabrook’s ‘hidden gem’ for many years. It’s a small but beautiful park which is often overlooked. During the last year, Councillor Hawkins and I have been determined to improve the play equipment so that more families will feel inspired to visit and spend time there. We are delighted to announce that following the public consultation, HTC have agreed to put in a new climbing frame, swings and a tower with a slide. In addition, they are planning to refresh the old assault course by painting it in vibrant colours. We hope that when this has been installed, you will take the opportunity to visit the park and enjoy the new equipment.

Hythe Watch NEWS FROM HY THE TOWN COUNCIL

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Councillor Anita Jones I have been given the great privilege of helping to co-ordinate the celebrations in Hythe for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together to celebrate Her Majesty’s historic reign.

Art Down The High Street… Follow Your Dreams!

The Queen’s Green Canopy is a large part of the Jubilee celebration across the country. The Queen is asking us all to ‘Plant a tree for the Jubilee’. In Hythe, we have a number of ‘Green Canopy’ projects already emerging. Firstly, we are planting a semi-mature Oak in Oaklands which we hope will flourish and grow to become a feature in the park over the forthcoming decades. On the Green, the Hythe Green Preservation Society have been planting a wood and creating a woodland walk. In addition, the Society is planning to plant tree whips with primary school children along the perimeter. In the Horn Street Recreation Area, local primary school children from Seabrook and St Martin’s Schools will be planting around 130 tree whips. We are also hoping that some local children, including Hythe Rainbows and Saltwood Cubs, will help plant tree whips along the edge of the Burmarsh play area. If you have a tree planting project in this Queen’s Jubilee year, we would love to hear about it! The main events for the Platinum Jubilee will take place at the start of June with a four-day weekend. On Thursday 2 June, the town crier will be undertaking the ‘Proclamation’ in the High Street at 2pm announcing the lighting of the beacons that evening. Then at 9.35pm, Pipers will play ‘Diu Regnare’ before the beacons are lit at 9.45pm on the Seafront. On Friday 3 June, we are hoping to host an outdoor church service in Oaklands, with all the churches from the town coming together to celebrate the Queen’s reign. On Saturday 4 June, the Hythe Business and Tourism Association are planning some ‘Jubilee themed’ activities in the High Street during the day. Later on, the popular band ‘Hullabaloo’ will be playing at the Bandstand at Oaklands between 7 and 9pm. On Sunday 5 June, the public are encouraged to organise Street parties. This is a wonderful opportunity to engage with your neighbours and build new friendships. If you want to hold a street party, you will need to apply for your road to be closed – you can find details of how to do this on the Hythe Town Council website. We will also be having a ‘Big Picnic’ at Oaklands Park, with music from the Hythe Town Concert Band and the Kent Police Band from 1pm to 5pm. In addition, we will have a bouncy castle and a children’s entertainer. I am really looking forward to these celebrations and hope that all residents in Hythe enjoy the events we have planned and make it a truly memorable occasion.

At last the long awaited “Art Down The High Street” children’s art show came to town. From 14-28 February, beautiful little pictures drawn and painted by children from local primary schools graced the windows of our High Street and provided a cheerful focus amidst the often grey, windy and wet, February gloom. As well as the artworks, seven shops hosted a little blue pillow, each embroidered with a letter and strategically placed to encourage people to explore the length and breadth of the High Street. By collecting the seven letters and working out the word they spelled out, children had a chance to win a little bag of treasure, generously donated by Artisan and Fantasia. A representative from the Community hub (Age UK) pulled out the names of brothers Benjamin, aged 7 and Oliver, 41/2, who were thrilled to be winners. Ten works each from Hythe Bay School, Palmarsh and St Augustine’s were chosen by their schools to be shown in the High Street. Each young artist had the opportunity to meet the Town Mayor, Councillor N Slade and be presented with a certificate in the Town Hall. Please ensure you pop down to Hythe Library, who have been kind enough to exhibit some of the artwork.

Hythe Museum In preparation for the museum’s display to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the curator has asked if anyone has any photos of Street Parties in Hythe from any Jubilee in the past.

Council Newsletter The first issue of Hythe Town Council's newsletter is now available. It is packed with useful information and updates, as well as news from some of the town's community groups, including the Hythe Green Preservation Society, the Triangle trustees, and Hythe Museum. There is a list of 2022 events and bandstand concerts, as well as contact details for councillors. Our website and social media channels have become ever more important, providing local news and updates, and the newsletter can be viewed at https://www.hythe-tc.gov.uk/wpcontent/uploads/sites/106/2022/04/HTC-CommunityNewsletter-February-2022.pdf. However, we recognise that not everyone is online so printed copies of the newsletter are available from the council's Oaklands office as well as from outlets around the town.

Hythe Town Council recently invited proposals for a major public work of art to be installed in the Princess Diana Sensory Garden in Oaklands. The funding for a public work of art was provided by the developer at Fishermans Beach in Hythe. All submissions are now in, and a consultation has opened. The five competing artworks can be viewed on our website, and you can register your vote here. Alternatively, to view the proposals and vote offline, visit the council offices.

Life goes on in Saltwood & Lympne

by Rev Barry Knott Rector of Saltwood & Lympne

Moving to Saltwood during lockdown failed to convey the true distinctiveness of the area. In particular, the community cohesion that makes it such a special place to live. Prior to Covid, village life was enriched by the many activities that used to take place for all ages from toddler groups to Pilates, and the many social activities and interest groups. Covid lockdown brought everything to a stop, and it is only now as things start up again with some degree of confidence that I can clearly see the true character of Saltwood and Lympne, and the warmth of the community spirit. The restrictions placed on us all throughout the Covid pandemic caused us to reflect on the priorities in our lives. Not surprisingly, the top of most peoples’ list is time spent together with family, friends, and neighbours. It is warming to see activities re-emerge and a few new ideas taking shape. For the greater part of village history, just like all other communities, the church was central to community life. The place where people gathered not just for Sunday worship, but to address all manner of issues, including the publication of important news both locally and nationally. I regularly meet people from far and wide walking in the churchyards at Saltwood and Lympne; they are drawn to the area by its beauty and often the relevance to their own story and family history. Whether we consider ourselves members of the church or not, the church community is still pivotal to local life. The place where we find peace and solace and that connection to the past. A focal point that says togetherness and hope. It has been my intention from the very beginning of my time here to embrace the unity in the community. As well as providing church

10 | www.hythelife.org.uk

services as expected, there is the drive to engage with the wider community through an abundance of events from quiz nights, social events, and celebrations such as this year’s Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Events are already taking place, with muchin the planning stage. Central to activity at Saltwood is the newly refurbished Lads’ Club. The club was built 100 years ago with funds gifted by Lady Lucy in memory of her late husband Sir Henry Lucy. It was to be a place where men returning from the First World War could meet, with the hope of maintaining the brotherly bond that came about through their experience of war and being away from home. The Lads’ Club has been part of village life ever since. I believe that it is our duty to preserve and make the building fit for future generations. This belief has been deepened by the many testimonies I have come

by that demonstrate the significance of the Lads’ Club in the lives of those who have grown up or lived in the village for a long time. Last October, the newly refurbished building was opened by Rear Admiral Tim Lowe, a Saltwood lad who shares an affinity with the building and was also dedicated by Bishop Rose of Dover. I sincerely hope that we have done right by our forebears and respectfully echoed the sentiment of Lady Lucy. I would like to thank the many donors and organisations that funded the project who share my belief in that community spirit. For more information on the Lads’ Club please visit the church website: https://lympneandsaltwoodchurches.org.uk

The Salvation Army by Lieutenant Sue Shorland-Compton Hythe Salvation Army would like to thank everyone for all the support they received, particularly over the Christmas period, to help those in need in our community. They were able to provide toys and gifts to many families in the community whilst also providing a Christmas Day lunch for those who may otherwise have been alone or struggling. They are continuing to support the community through their Foodbank and were so pleased to receive all the food donations from the reverse Advent calendar that so many of you took part in. Held every Wednesday morning, the food bank continues to see an increase in demand and any support, either in food donations at our drop-off points in Sainsburys and Aldi, or by means of financial support through our Just Giving page (see QR code below) would be very much appreciated. Lieutenant Sue Shorland-Compton, the Commanding Officer in Hythe can be contacted on 01303 268792 or by email hythe@salvationarmy.org.uk. Hythe Rotary Club collaborative initiatives Hythe Rotary Club is getting back into its stride once again and expanding its range of close local collaborations or partnerships to ensure the widest benefits of this networking are achieved. . We are collaborating with Hythe Town Council and Hythe Business & Tourism Association (HBTA) to create an online Town Diary. We aim to make this a comprehensive listing of all known significant events in our local community so that it will become a useful central resource of calendar information to enable event planners to avoid date clashes, or too many events happening too close to each other. The Town Diary will be for information only. Further details will come through our respective Facebook or website pages. We will also be at the Community Fun Day being organized by Age UK Hythe and Lyminge along with Hythe Rotary, Scouts and HBTA at Oaklands Park on Saturday 16 July as an occasion to thank the community for its support during Covid-19. For more information, go to the Age UK Hythe and Lyminge website and Community Support Hub Facebook pages. See you there! Another project being launched soon will be the provision of advice and support to Brockhill Park Performing Arts College students entering the workplace. We envisage all in our community helping students to prepare for the ‘new normal’ after leaving secondary education. We are planning, together with the College and HBTA, to include local businesses and students’ parents in this project to ensure the students receive advice and guidance from those with real-life experience of their businesses on how to prepare for the workplace. Some high-profile local companies have already signed up.

We will be in touch either directly or through our Facebook pages and websites, which will have details of how to participate. Other collaborative ventures and initiatives include assembly of a “Welcome Pack” which will be handed to all potential Hythe residents by our local Estate Agents.

What’s your retirement game plan? Understanding your options and managing your income are no longer ‘one-off’ decisions

A

fter the introduction of Pension Freedoms in 2015, retirement choices fundamentally changed. Restrictions around access to de昀ned contribution pensions were lifted and retirees gained more 昀exibility. You can choose to stay invested, decide your own level of income, or even withdraw the entire pot. Purchasing an annuity is now another choice, rather than a necessity . Greater freedoms also bring greater responsibility to ensure retirement savings last. Nobel Laureate William Sharpe describes turning your retirement savings into income as ‘the nastiest, hardest problem in 昀nance’. And it’s no wonder, when you consider how many options are now available.

Many people 昀nd that the countless choices at retirement are overwhelming The cliff-edge idea of stopping work at 60 or 65 and ‘being retired’ are fading into obscurity. People today are adopting a phased approach, transitioning from working and saving, and moving towards leisure and spending over a period of years. This is all done on their terms, in line with their own life plans, rather

than restricted by a pension scheme, or an employer. Ask yourself, what does retirement look like? How can I make it a reality? If you’re ‘retired’ already, is it as you imagined? Being ‘in retirement’ is much more than simply drawing an income. You’ll need to think about an ef昀cient home and use for your tax-free cash (considering how poor savings rates are), create a sustainable income that will last your lifetime, and manage your retirement capital. With no de昀nitive retirement age anymore, and different pressures on supporting older and younger generations, a rethink is needed on how to make best use of your retirement savings. This means considering other assets and sources of income alongside your pension, in such a way to adapt to your changing needs over time.

averaging when drawing an income, which is an added layer of complexity when establishing a retirement income strategy. A problematic issue in retirement is underestimating how long your money needs to last. The 100-year life is fast becoming normal, with more of us living much longer, more active lives than ever before.

Expert advice is key as your retirement could last 30 years and require many short- and long-term decisions The value of advice comes from building a strong relationship over time, to understand you and your family’s needs. Our expertise in understanding the intricacies of a modern retirement means you can worry less and focus on the important things in life.

This new found 昀exibility is not without its risks. Accessing your pension pot can present very different issues compared to building your pension wealth. If you have chosen to remain invested in retirement, there will be challenges that you will need help and advice to navigate.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select, and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

For example, stock market volatility can potentially bring with it sequence of returns risk and reverse pound cost

Equities do not provide the security of capital which is characteristic of a deposit with a bank or building society.

A Real

Community Feel

by Chris Turnbull

Readers will be aware from previous articles in this magazine, that Hythe Environmental Community Group (HECG) has a number of subgroups organising activities around particular themes: Energy; Waste; Food; Flora and Fauna; Hops. difference in the lives of those in our local community and touch those who might need it most. One major gleaning “customer” is the Shepway Foodbank, with locations in Folkestone, New Romney and Lydd. With the friendly support of the Foodbank manager, the gleaned produce is shipped out from the Hythe warehouse to all locations, using the Foodbank van and dropping off gleaned produce to our school customers on the Romney Marsh as they go.

These activities are run as regular activity cycles, while others are more ad hoc as and when needed. This means there's an opportunity for anybody to get involved, regardless of the amount of time they wish to commit or the particular activity they're interested in. Read on for how our network is growing from a small group project to a complex community, linking individuals from all

walks of life who wish to make a difference within our beautiful corner of Kent. The Gleaning “circuit-board” HECG Gleaning involves harvesting surplus or otherwise unusable fruit and veg from farms, and delivering it to more than 20 charities, foodbanks, schools and other organisations caring for folk with different challenges. Through our work here, we hope to make a

HECG has supported the Bumblebee Conservation Trust for some years, both through donations and volunteer hours. Our local brewer partners, Docker and Hopfuzz have both generously made donations to BBCT in return for the hops donated by us for their brews. In return, the team from BBCT has supported our activities in a number of ways including donation of native wildflowers and bee homes for the Community Orchard which we are developing on Eaton Lands together with Hythe Civic Society.

We also deliver to the refugees housed at Napier Barracks and have recently welcomed a small group of residents into one of our gleaning teams. Not only does this benefit the wider team, but for our new recruits it means a greater sense of wellbeing and an opportunity to play an active role in the wider community. Community groups with a mission to enable the young and/or disadvantaged to experience and benefit from working and playing outdoors may not be customers for our gleaned produce, but

Hops and other plants that “get around” Our community hop farm now has over 200 members and is growing from strength to strength with valued membership of some excellent community gardens and spaces including, Hythe Green Preservation Society, Sandgate Community Garden and Romney Marsh Community Garden (adjacent to the KWT visitor centre). Links with one of our members who has created a Forest Garden on Romney Marsh has resulted in the provision of willow whips to The Hythe Triangle Community Garden

HECG’s regular seed and plant swaps in Hythe (Spring and Autumn) are lively events in themselves and there is a bustle of chatter and activity as plants are offered and swapped. Any plants that don’t find a home on the day will be offered to like-minded contacts such as New Romney and Sellindge community gardens, thus avoiding waste and preserving nature. The event this April will also be used to collect native wildflowers donated by the public for use by BBCT to improve the local habitat for pollinators (including bumblebees). There are so many good initiatives underway in this area, it’s a privilege to be able to make connections with as many as possible. Once started, these mature into relationships linking people and groups to develop a more closelyknit community.

have become part of the virtuous circle which benefits more than just the individual parties. “Muddy Wellies”, a local charity-run community garden, needed to provide a major dose of TLC to their cherry trees and approached us to see if we could help. Cherry tree pruning expertise is not something that we have within the group. However, we had gleaned cherries from a wonderful orchard in Wingham and the top fruit farm manager, whom we know well from visits to the farm, was glad to give his time on a Saturday morning to instruct, demonstrate and guide creation of a more controlled and manageable cherry orchard for the charity and create a much more competent group of HECG cherry pruners!

to form part of their entrance archway. Another fantastic community group where our relationship has blossomed is "Led by The Wild” in Aldington, which engages child and adult learning through the enjoyment of woodland and nature-based experience. They are now growing our hops as well as joining us to host some of our bird walks and moth discovery evenings in their woodlands.

We deliver to nearly 10 schools in Folkestone, Hythe and surrounding villages, and a number of these have also made use of our community owned fruit press to run apple pressing days at the schools! These are real fun as well as being educational. In some cases, the relationship has expanded to assisting and advising on the establishment of plant and veg growing areas for the children.

40 Years of Friendship by Kevin Howell

This year, Hythe Twinning Association marks its Ruby Anniversary - forty years of promoting friendships and cultural links between Hythe and its twin towns of Berck-sur-Mer in France and Poperinge in Belgium. Developing from an idea put forward for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, the Association is one of Kent’s longest-running active twinning groups. Even over the past two years our hundred or so members have stayed in touch and we were able to restart our social events in Hythe last year. Berck-sur-Mer is located on the Cote d’Opale just south of Le Touquet, one of Berck’s big attractions is the beach - there’s none much bigger within easy reach! The wide expanse of sand is ideal for land-yachting, moto-cross, the creation of sandcastles and sculptures,, and for staging one of the world’s biggest annual kite festivals every April. If it can be made into a kite, it’ll be found here! The town is also frequented by painters who love the light – just have a look at the pictures by Jan Lavezzari that hang in Hythe’s museum.

Given its First World War links, Poperinge will be known to many people. In fact the link with Hythe stems from Talbot House, a social centre for soldiers of all ranks when they were rested away from the front line. The house was given to TocH, the charity which still runs it, by Lord Wakefield of Hythe. Our main friendship links today are with members of the St. Cecilia Band who have visited Hythe regularly, especially for the Hythe Festival. Poperinge is in the heart of Belgium’s hop-growing and beer-making area, “Hommel” being the local brew. The hop is celebrated every three years with a weekendlong festival. Music, parades and a fantastic welcome attract beer fans from across the globe (roll on September 2023!). People have joined us for a number of reasons, most notably the range of activities and opportunities we have to offer. Some simply take the chance to practice foreign language, others love to explore what's on offer across the water, and most love the social aspect of the association. As we approach our fortieth year, we hope to more of these exciting activities and look forward to more as we plan to attend Berck's Kite Festival in April, organise an anniversary exhibition in Hythe High Street on July the 9th and enter the Venetian Fete in August. Over the past forty years we have been really pleased to be able to support all sorts of

20 | www.hythelife.org.uk

exchanges and visits - schools, clubs & societies, professional groups, sports teams. We often simply act as an information and contact point but sometimes may be able to provide some seed funding to get a project off the ground. Sometimes people just want to know where they can find a good lunch! So if this has whetted your appetite, have a look at our website www.hythetwinningassociation.com, contact our secretary Pat Bell bellevue45@gmail.com , or come and have a chat with us at the Undercroft in the High Street on July 9th.

Emotional by Lorna Graham The last few years, the words ‘unprecedented times’ seem to be ringing in our ears for too long. The words themselves even cause discomfort. With lockdown in our wake, but the pandemic still lingering, exposure to conflict on our TV screens not to mention the cost of living crisis, a cold blanket of anxiety has wrapped around us all. According to the World Health Organisation, the pandemic triggered a 25% increase in the prevalence of anxiety and depression world wide, calling for a desperate need for services and support. The emphasis on mental well-being during lockdown inspired many to consider important aspects of life. With new-found time to exercise, spend quality time with family, meditation, enjoying new or rediscovered hobbies that had been neglected etc. we learned how to be creative with the time we were given and used it as a tool to calm ourselves during a time of great unease. Yet here we are, still in a time of anxiety, the unknown looming, and the media’s focus on highlighting all the chaos surrounding us, only this time round, we are maintaining normal living of jobs and a faster paced life engulfing all of us respite seems unattainable for many. The world seems overwhelming. And there is no longer the time to reflect and re- engage with what makes us happy. Practising emotional resilience is important in combating day to day stressors. Unexplained anxiety is inevitable. Unexplained emotions surface in all of us all the time. We live in a society of composure, to the extreme that we like to control our own emotions. Emotional avoidance and repression is a coping mechanism used to avoid emotional suffering. This is a defensive technique, fighting off negative emotions and only focusing on positive feelings. So, this myth that ‘we are in control of our emotions’ is hindering emotional development. Emotions are instinctual, fundamental to our consciousness. They cannot be prevented, only regulated. Furthermore, embracing your negative, positive, and all emotion in between makes you much more emotionally resilient. Researchers think that ‘people who experience a wider range of these types of specific subcategories

22 | www.hythelife.org.uk

of emotions are more resilient in the face of adversity because they’re better at identifying what triggers those emotions’. This coincides with the theory that suppressing a physiological emotional response will increase the intensity of emotional experience. Studies show emotional avoidance is correlated to high cortisol levels (the stress hormone). Therefore repressing your negative emotions actually causes a negative psychological response. Moreover, investigations into the possibility of a positive association between repression of emotions and symptoms of depression indicate its negative consequence. It is clear that expressing your true feelings in a healthy manner is crucial to your general wellbeing. In the midst of collective social adversity

in our recent past, present and future, the acceptance of your negative emotions will only make you stronger. Finding a way that suits yourself to let it out rather than burying anxiety, worry, guilt and anger inside you. The more emotions you feel, the more resilient you become in your own regulation, ultimately making you more relaxed which we can all do with. Accepting unexplained triggers, negative feelings is a key happiness technique, and as a society, normalising the acceptance of identifying and accepting negative feelings will ultimately make us stronger as individuals and a collective community. This will without a doubt make you feel much more in control, by allowing yourself to stop trying to control your emotions.

Brockhill Country Park Update from the Rangers’ Hut By Ella Austin (Visitor Services and Events Officer at Brockhill Country Park)

At Brockhill Country Park Spring has arrived and we are so pleased here in the Rangers Hut after a long winter of site maintenance. We have packed our thermals away for the year and are revelling in the signs of spring appearing around us. The lambs are skipping in the field next door, buds have appeared on the trees and the park is awash with daffodils. Our storm Eunice clear up is nearly complete, thanks to the help of our Tuesday morning Little Explorers toddler group attendees, who set out armed with miniature brooms, wheelbarrows and buckets of soapy water to help clear the damage. Work on our new play area is underway and we can often be found eagerly peering through the fence counting down to its mid-May re-opening. The end result will be a more inclusive and accessible space for all age groups, featuring; swings, two new climbing structures, a tube slide, sensory features and an all-ability roundabout. The much-loved ‘big slide’ running down the embankment is of course staying, Brockhill Park simply wouldn’t be the same without it! Plans are also underway for our ‘Queen Bees @ Brockhill’ Jubilee children’s events over the May half-term, where we will be celebrating Her Royal Highness and nature in our wildflower meadows. We have been working hard to create a habitat for pollinators here at Brockhill by planting wildflower meadows, fruit trees and carrying out regular surveys with the Bumble Bee Conservation Trust.

24 | www.hythelife.org.uk

It’s great to be able to incorporate this into our events, hopefully inspiring children and building guardianship we can use to help to secure the future of these vital species. We are running events throughout the school holidays and are looking forward to inviting you along to ‘Poo Pioneers’ and ‘Noisy Nature’ this summer. Ranger Paul is furthering our conservation work by studying for his MSc certificate in Sustainability and Ecology, which has seen him working late into the evening at the park. While studying, he has been enjoying the company of a large Tawny Owl which has taken up residence in the oak tree accompanied by bats flying overhead! If you would like to get involved with our conservation work, we would love to welcome you along to our fortnightly volunteering days, held every other Thursday at the park. After months of restrictions, it’s been wonderful to host groups in our Badger Room again, getting teams connecting and spending time out in nature has been long awaited. The squirrels, it seems, have enjoyed this even more than us- so much so one mischievous squirrel in particular snuck into the Badger Room after we had left and was found tucking into the leftover refreshments! Needless to say, we will be keeping the Badger Room door shut from now on; we’re not sure custard creams and mini

muffins are the best diet for our furry friends. Brockhill Country Park is situated in Saltwood, just above Hythe. We are free to visit and open from 9am each day (closing times vary depending on dusk). Parking charges are in operation at a cost of £1.70 per day during the week and £2.70 per day on weekends and bank holidays. Why not be a green hero and use public transport to visit us? We are just a 15-minute walk from Sandling station and on the Stagecoach 10/10A & 18 bus routes. For more information on volunteering, venue hire, school visits, events, toddler groups or anything else please pop us an email kentcountryparks@kent.gov.uk or call us on 03000 42 09 93, we would love to hear from you.

Here at Hythe Vet Centre we want to deliver the very best in professional veterinary care whilst maintaining a loving, caring and family ethos. After a long search for the right place for our passion, we believe that we have found it, here in Hythe. THESE INCLUDE: • Dedicated parking. • Purpose built surgical theatre, imaging suite and kennels. • Spacious waiting area and large consulting rooms. • X-ray machine with digital processor allowing faster developing times. • An ultrasound scanner similar to those used in human hospitals. • Heated theatre table – to keep your loved ones cosy warm! • Air driven dental machine, not unlike what you would find at your own dentist! • The latest veterinary practice computer system – this will increase the efficiency of the mundane administration side of things. • An oxygen concentrator – this will provide the oxygen that we will use during anaesthetics. Its biggest bonus is that it means that we will not need regular oxygen bottle deliveries, reducing our environmental impact.

Combining 25 years of experience in small animal veterinary practice, Colin, Helen and their team aim to provide a first class service to both you and your beloved pets. We have been awarded Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons General Practice recognition. Michael Darkins Hello Hythe! It’s a delight to be writing in Hythe Life to introduce myself. My name is Michael Darkins and I’m the new Priest in Charge for St Leonard’s Church. I was born and brought up in Chislehurst, so I’ll leave it to you to decide whether I’m from North Kent or South London – although it’s certain that I’m a Kentish Man. I studied English Literature and Creative Writing at Royal Holloway University in Surrey, where I developed a particular interest in playwriting. Growing up in church probably had quite a lot to do with this actually, subconsciously anyway. There’s a strong link between the narratives we see on stage and screen and church worshipboth are telling stories that resonate with our lives, and both invite those watching to become wrapped up in the drama – becoming emotionally invested in the events and characters we hear about. But lest this descends into an essay, I’d best get back on track telling you about me! After university and a year spent working in London, I moved to Cambridge where I trained for ministry. Previous to Hythe, I was living in Herne Bay and ministering in Thanet, primarily around the villages of Minster and St Nicholas at Wade. I’ve been living in Hythe for just over a month now, so the town is very much starting to feel like home. One of the things that I’ve enjoyed most about living here so far is just how walkable the town is. Virtually everything seems within walking distance and what stunning walks there are to be had – along the canal and the beach being two obvious highlights for me so far! But I didn’t come here alone, joining me for these

walks are my wife, Cat, and our puppy, Basil. Together we’ve enjoyed strolling the High Street, getting to know where everything is and sampling some of the local cafes. It’s an immense privilege for me to be ministering in Hythe, looking after the buildings, and serving the whole community here. What I find almost difficult to express is the sense of joy and contentment in being where I believe that God has called me to, and amongst the people I feel called to serve. Outside of Church though, as anyone who steps into my study will quickly realise, my other big interest in life is virtually anything related to Sci-Fi or Fantasy. This covers everything, from films, TV, books, games, models – the lot. It means that the shelves of The Vicarage are lined with theology books stacked up next to pop-vinyl figures and much more. So, if you see me around town, please do say hello – I’m always happy to chat about anything, be it faith, fantasy, or just the weather. I look

26 | www.hythelife.org.uk

forward to getting to know Hythe better and ministering among you. Photo credits: © James Willmott

Saltwood Speaks

by Guy Sharrock

Saltwood is an ancient village that has witnessed many significant events over the centuries, and Covid-19 is another chapter in its ongoing story. The challenges arising from over a year of Covid-19 have affected us all in different ways, either through personal or family illness or from the social restrictions that we have experienced, or both and more. Our aim is to obtain a record of how Covid-19 has impacted on the lives of a small sample of Saltwood residents between 2020-22. In the early part of the first Covid-19 lockdown, while listening to the radio I was not infrequently hearing presenters opine that the pandemic was the biggest shock to our country since the Second World War. Around the same time, I remember listening to the broadcast of a memorable radio recording of a wartime conversation. It was enthralling: the respondent was busy answering the interviewer’s questions when at one point he calmly noted above the whistling sound of falling bombs that they needed to take cover. It made me realize how powerful it is to hear ‘live’ what later becomes an historical event. Whilst it’s one thing to read about historical events, it’s likely a richer experience to hear people talk about their experiences of living through such a moment of history. Remember that just over 100 years ago the devastating worldwide impact of the influenza pandemic during 1918-1919. It is said that over 50 million people worldwide died, and around one-third of the world’s population were infected with the virus. We can only imagine how people were feeling at a time when there was no such thing as a vaccine, and certainly no antibiotics to treat secondary infections.

Together with a friend, we started wondering whether it might be valuable for listeners in the future to hear how different folk here in the village were impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. As we continue to endure its effects, we have almost completed our initial task of capturing a variety of perspectives reflecting some of the diversity of Saltwood residents’ Covid-19 experiences. The aim of the Saltwood Speaks! podcast series, comprising 10 episodes, is that through a series of informal conversations between respondents we can capture their personal reflections at a time when their memories are not too distant, and their thoughts and hopes as they look ahead. Our preferred approach has been to encourage a ‘self-led’ conversation in the style of the BBC’s Listening Project. We have had a wonderful range of willing respondents involving women and men, younger and older, different occupations, who have given us their consent to record and publish their conversations. Although this has not been a ‘scientific sample’ we think it reflects a broad range of perspectives. Once we complete the recordings, our task will then be to edit them to an episode duration of 15-20 minutes. This seemed to us to be a

28 | www.hythelife.org.uk

‘goldilocks’ duration - not too long, not too short, but just about right. The editing process has been explained to the respondents who, of course, will have the final say in anything that gets published online. We plan to host the recollections online for others in the village, local historians, and the public to access, most likely on YouTube, but we will also be approaching administrators of local websites (e.g. Saltwood Club). We are also considering sending the podcast series to the British Library as a historical record for future socio-historical research. Here is how one episode sounds and looks: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1912406/98223 50, the first completed episode in the Saltwood Speaks! podcast series.

The Stars of the Kent Foodie Scene are Revealed:

The Taste of Kent Awards Announce the Finalists for 2022 After a flurry of last-minute votes, public voting for the Taste of Kent Awards is now closed. Produced in Kent is delighted to reveal the finalists for 2022, featuring both well-established businesses and new, green companies. The votes are in…. • Public voting once again exceeded expectations, with over 30,000 votes cast in the various food and drink categories. • Voting in the hospitality categories increased by 11% this year, proving that since the start of Covid-19 the public have a new found appreciation for local restaurants and pubs. • In the self-nominated categories, the Farmer of the Year award had an notable increase in applications, and both new categories - New Food and Drink Product and Food and Drink Start-up of the Year – saw strong applications. CE of Produced in Kent Floortje Hoette is delighted with the public outpouring of support “The Taste of Kent Awards are proof that the general public LOVES local food and drink and wants to support the businesses involved, which gives our sector the boost it so deserves in these ongoing challenging times. From the increase in votes in certain categories we can see that support for local pubs and restaurants is at an all time high after a very challenging period for hospitality. There's also a real sense that Kent's entrepreneurial spirit is still going strong with a brilliant response to our new product and start-up

categories. I am incredibly proud of the finalists and know the judges will have a hard time choosing who will go home with an award!” Awards Ceremony The three finalists in each category will now enter the final stage of the competition. They will be scrutinised by a carefully selected group of judges – industry experts and sponsors - who will decide which businesses are to be crowned winners at the awards ceremony on Thursday 12th of May at the Kent Event Centre, Detling. Tickets for the much anticipated black-tie dinner ceremony will be on sale to the general public from Monday 21 March onwards. Tickets are limited, so if you need a glamourous night out at a fabulous event, an opportunity to mingle with the great and the good from Kent’s local independent food and drink community, whilst also enjoying a fabulous 3-course menu served by The Curious Eatery, make sure to book your tickets as soon as possible! Follow Produced in Kent for updates on ticket sales and more info about the finalists. The awards are made possible because of the generous support of TOKA’s loyal sponsors, and

in particular head sponsors Southeastern Rail and the University of Greenwich. Nazanin Zand, Associate professor of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Greenwich said “As consumers we are thinking more carefully about what we eat and where our food comes from. The University is keen to support the local independent food industry because of the role they play in a healthy and more sustainable diet.’ Sustainability will be a leading theme in the 2022 edition of the TOKA magazine. Following the success of last year, the magazine will again be produced in time for the dinner event, celebrating the finalists and winners and sharing the stories of the businesses and products. Also included, will be detailed recipes and fabulous food hacks utilising the winning products. In the dedicated sustainability section, the magazine will showcase the ways in which TOKA businesses are looking after our planet and embracing sustainability.

HYTHE RECIPE

WILD GARLIC SOUP WITH CREAM CHEESE AND CHIVES by Allister Barsby For me, wild garlic is the taste of spring. Pungent when raw, but subtle and mellow when cooked. This soup recipe is the perfect way to showcase this wild growing leaf. It’s easily overlooked when on your walks, but when you find it, no doubt there’ll be lots of it! It is easy to pick and will last for up to a week in the fridge. Note: As it grows in the wild, you must wash the garlic thoroughly and check for insects and dirt.

Ingredients • 4 banana shallots, peeled and sliced fine

• 400g water

• 50g butter

• 1 bay leaf and 2 sprigs of thyme, tied into a bunch using string

• 200g potato, peeled and diced small

• 400g wild garlic, washed and well drained

• 400g chicken or vegetable stock

• 100g and 50g double cream and butter to finish

• 2 cloves garlic, sliced

To Serve Method • In a large heavy based saucepan, melt the 50g of butter and add the shallots and garlic with a nice pinch of salt. Sweat for 5 minutes until softened. • Add the potato, stock, water, and herbs, bring to the boil, place a lid on top and simmer for 20 minutes to cook the potato. Season this base to your liking. • Add the wild garlic, pushing it down with a spatula until submerged. This may seem a lot, but it will wilt down like spinach. Bring back the boil with the lid on and cook for 4 minutes. • Transfer to the blender and blend for 3 minutes until completely smooth. You can use a hand blender, but you will not be able to get it so smooth. Blend in the 100g butter and double cream, season to taste and pour into warmed bowls. • Add a large quenelle or spoonful of cream cheese into the soup, finish with the snipped chives and a drizzle of olive oil. And don’t forget to warm your crusty bread rolls through in the oven!

HYTHE RECIPE

PORN STAR MARTINI by Hemanshu Patel

As many of my friends and family know lockdown was a very busy time for the Patel family as we were trying to help the community as much as possible during the week doing food deliveries from Saltwood Stores. This meant that we only had Sunday afternoons free and thus #Sundayfunday was born. We started mastering the art of making cocktails and then wanted to take it a step further by making some of the syrups needed to take the cocktails to the next level.

Ingredients (2 cocktails) • Vanilla Vodka 50ml

• Passion fruit Juice 50ml

• Prosecco or champagne 2 shot glasses full

• Passion fruit halved

• Passion fruit liqueur 50ml

• Orange juice 50ml

• Passion fruit syrup 25ml

• Ice cubes

• Lime juice 15ml

Tools required • Cocktail shaker

• 2 shot glasses

• Hawthorne Strainer

• Strainer

• 2 Martini /coupe glasses

• Saucepan

Passion fruit syrup • 300ml Pineapple juice • 60ml Lemon Juice • 3 passion fruits • 250g sugar

Method • In a saucepan pour in the wet ingredients then add the sugar and pulp from the passion fruit and simmer on a medium heat and stir for around 20 /25 minutes leave to cool then strain into a sealable container. This can be stores in the fridge. • In a cocktail shaker add 6/8 ice cubes then add all wet ingredients apart from prosecco or champagne. Place the top on the shaker and shake approximately 1 minute. Use the Hawthorne strainer to evenly poor into both glasses • Tip poor the foam at the end to both glasses evenly. Garnish with a half cut passion fruit and serve with a shoot of prosecco or champagne on the side

everyone back together again. Last year we had the pleasure of seeing over 20,000 people from near and far come through our gates and we hope that this year will be even bigger still. The We Love Hythe Life Food Festival hosts a range of gourmet food and drink producers, most of whom are local to Kent and many of whom are located within a 25-mile radius of Hythe. From the international to the best of British, the We Love Hythe Life Food Festival is an annual celebration of diversity, culture and great food and drink with over 50 stalls dedicated to cuisine from across the globe. With everything available from preserves and pickles to cakes and bakes, spicy snacks to sweet treats, the bustling marketplace of artisan producers, restaurateurs

and high-end street food sellers make sure to offer a foodie feast to suit every budget, taste and dietary need. This year will also see the return of our Demo tent, giving you the opportunity to interact with our fantastic team of suppliers and learn a little about what goes on behind the scenes! If that wasn’t enough, a collection of cocktails, a craft beer tent, Festiveales (locally brewed by Romney Ales) and Pimms & Prosecco is sure to quench the adults' thirst, whilst the smaller members of the family are kept entertained with amusements and funfair rides in our kids corner. On top of the food and drinks, one of the many highlights of the weekend are the musicians, artists and talent who take to our main stage. This year’s line up once again consists of bands who volunteer their time to showcase their fantastic musical talents throughout the weekend, providing you with the entertainment all day every day. To keep the Bank Holiday mood going, an eclectic mix of bands and solo artists will guarantee that there is a little something for everyone.

Hythe District

Photographic Club

by Phil Heading Club Chairman

Hythe District Photographic Club is delighted that “Hythe Life Magazine” has agreed to sponsor the club for another year. 2021, the first year of this collaboration, turned out to be very successful for the club, when despite all the disruption of the Covid pandemic, we celebrated our 10th Anniversary in style, with a full programme of meetings and events. The highlight was the production and sale of our book “August in Hythe” which contained 200 images taken locally and captured the town and its people emerging from lockdown in August 2021. With the help of Hemanshu Patel and the Rotary Club of Hythe, 250 copies were produced which sold out in 4 weeks, with the assistance of some local businesses, enabling the club to raise £1,000 for two local charities, Hythe Dementia Awareness Forum, and the Pilgrims Hospice. An online gallery of the book photographs can be viewed at: https://hythedistrictphotographicclub.jimdo.c om/august-in-hythe-2021/ “August in Hythe” also raised the profile of the club, locally, and this year members have been asked by the Hythe Business & Tourism Association and organisers of other events to record happenings in Hythe during the year. 2022 got off to an exciting start when the prestigious and oldest weekly photographic magazine in the world, “Amateur Photographer” featured a two page article on the club in February featuring photographs taken by club members. This resulted in enquiries about membership from abroad. The club started the year with a record 54 members, and this healthy trend is in contrast to many photographic clubs who report a dwindling membership.

James Willmott - Tranquility of Hythe

44 | www.hythelife.org.uk

Stewart Weller - Speedway Chase Down Our approach has always been one of encouraging members to take and talk about photographs. We set a project each month and invite members to submit images which are reviewed at our monthly meetings. We do not invite “professional” judges to critique the photographs, but prefer to learn from discussion between the members where there is a wide range of experience, and where more experienced members willingly share knowledge to help everyone improve their techniques. The rapid advances in technology mean that cameras are becoming increasingly more sophisticated, to the point that Artificial Intelligence algorithms are now employed in top end mirrorless cameras enabling them to focus automatically on the eye of a bird in flight, an animal on the move and human faces. Similarly, the latest smartphone cameras, are more technically advanced than dedicated cameras of 10 years ago. All this technology may make picture taking easier, but it doesn’t guarantee better photographs, which is why the club tries to help members improve their creative and technical skills, through discussion, workshops and group photoshoots. The old adage, “there’s many a good tune played on an old fiddle” applies to photography, so the club doesn’t get too excited about the latest

Jade Otto - My Niece Kayde technology but instead concentrates on the creative side and composition, exposure and post-processing of images. The club meets at 7.00 p.m. on the 2nd Thursday of every month at the Hythe Sports Pavilion in South Rd. Membership is £15 p.a. (students free), and there is a £3 charge on the door at each meeting. The club has an active Facebook® group with almost 170 members and full club members belong to a WhatsApp® group which keeps everyone in touch with local photo opportunities at short notice. You are welcome to join a meeting as a visitor, to see what we do. Our full programme is available on our website at: https://hythedistrictphotographicclub.jimdo.c om/programme-projects-2022/

Health and the importance of wearing a correctly fitted bra Hi ladies I have been in the lingerie sector for many years and have been bra fitting for 16 years after having my training by Triumph in 2006. If you are uncomfortable in your bra a professional bra fitting is advisable. An uneven shape, an unpleasant pinch – there are several tell-tale signs of an ill fitting bra. Your perfect fit will come with no niggles, no annoyances, just all-day comfort and we’re here to help you find it. Did you know that 80% of women are wearing the wrong size bra ,this can actually cause a number of health issues including Neck ,Back pain, headaches ,pain in the breasts and under the arm .Many women wear their bras too loose around the back and too small in the cup, this will cause a lot of unnecessary pressure on the shoulders. With a perfectly fitted bra the breasts are supported from underneath and not the shoulder straps. A badly fitted bra will not only be uncomfortable but will also ruin your silhouette under clothing making your bust look bulky and too low. Many women think they need a minimising bra but actually just need a correctly fitted bra and the correct style for your body. For advise or to book an appointment call Dawn Luck 01303 487760 Also I can advise and fit ladies after breast surgery and have a extensive range of mastectomy bras from AMOENA and ANITA. Recommended by the cancer care units from our local hospitals.

Are We Having Fun Yet? by Alison Greer

Is your life so busy with responsibilities that you’ve forgotten how to have fun? If so, you’re not alone. Whenever I have a catch up with friends the topic is always the same… “I’ve been so busy!” They rarely talk about the things that bring them enjoyment. I get it! With work, kids, aging parents and other commitments placing increasing demands on our time, it makes it trickier to squeeze in the things we love to do. The things that bring us pure joy! We can have spontaneous fun sometimes. Playing with the kids, laughing with friends. This type of joy is priceless, but you can’t schedule it. The kind of fun I’m talking about is the type that you deliberately seek out. That takes you away from the mundane, if only for a short time. I promise you that you won’t regret making time in your diary. I always find that it adds so much more to other aspects of my life. I’m more relaxed and my interactions with others are more joyful. I feel I have more energy for family and friends and I am more creative and productive at work. But that’s all very well but what if it’s so long since you had non spontaneous fun that you just don’t know what to do? Think back to your childhood What did you love to do? Remember the things that you could spend hours engrossed in doing, that is the key to unlocking things you’ll love to do now.

For example, if you were obsessed with toy cars you might start collecting matchbox cars or going to car shows.

another item on the to-do list. But if it feels fun to you, embrace it and find ways to incorporate fitness into your life.

Were you a bookworm? Make time to re-read your favourite childhood books, join a book club or visit a second-hand book shop.

Make it something you really look forward to. After all, anticipation is part of the pleasure.

Don’t rely on others I doesn’t have to be a solo pursuit, but your nearest and dearests idea of fun might be different from yours. We are all unique with individual likes after all. Accept that your idea of fun might not be their cup of tea. Don’t wait for someone else to do it with you. You can do it alone. If you are waiting for your friends or partner to join you, you might be waiting forever for your schedules to align. I know that it can be nerve wracking to try something new, especially on your own. But if you are attending a new class or group alone you’ll be more likely to make new friends than if you were to go as a readymade friendship group. Feel the freedom Fun should feel like freedom. It shouldn’t feel like a chore. Some people find their fun in sports or exercise. For others (myself included) exercise becomes

46 | www.hythelife.org.uk

Experiment You don’t have to find just one thing that brings you fun. In fact, experimenting might be part of the fun too. Trying several things will help you discover the things you really love doing. In the last month I have been ice-skating, a pottery workshop, antique hunting, and seen a burlesque show. Trying all these different things has really opened my mind to the variety of experiences that are out there. Go on… give it a try; add some fun to your life! DIY Design Novice? by Shirley Rodgers

DIY used to be a term reserved only for those ardent home ‘doer-upperers’ over long bank holiday weekends, but now? Think DIY, think web design. With the economic climate taking its toll on business, many of them are turning to DIY-ing their websites. If your business has a DIY website, you need to ask yourself 2 questions: • Does it look professional? • Does it guide your visitors to book in with you or make a sale? If the answer to these questions is “No!” then read on! DIY-ing your website is no easy feat by any means and has driven many business owners to either pull their hair out, or be one computer down due to throwing it out of the window. There’s so much that needs to go into a good, functional, clear and high converting website, and if you don’t really know what you’re doing, you might just need a helping hand. Here are the 6 top mistakes I see countless people make when DIY-ing their websites and the action steps you can take to fix this. ONE: It’s all about you. Some websites are so business focussed, that the client is actually overlooked. The transformation that you offer your clients should be the focus of your website. You’re there to help them along the way. Doublecheck your website—is it all about you, or is it about your client? Even the stuff about you should be there to build your brand and point back to your ideal client.

Think: Client pain-point; solution you offer; transformational result. TWO: Way too much content. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you need to squash every. little. thing. into the website, as it’s all relevant, right? Wrong. You have between 3 - 7 seconds to grab someone's attention, so: • Keep things short, sweet and to the point. • Break up information with enticing titles and headlines: people read the headlines, skim the rest. • Shorten lines of text to make it easier to digest, that way your visitors are more likely to stick around and read what you have to say. THREE: Poor quality images Images can make or break the success of your website. If you can use your own images, great, but they must be high quality, if they’re not, just don’t use them. There are some excellent, ‘non-cheesy’ stock photography sites online that offer high quality, royalty free images for both personal and professional use. Using high quality images will not only increase engagement, but immediately up level the perception of your brand.

48 | www.hythelife.org.uk

FOUR: SEO not considered You need to make sure that you think about your SEO at the beginning of the design process and write your website copy with that in mind. Include keywords in your headings, content and page titles, as well as in your page descriptions. FIVE: Not designing for mobile Need I say much here? It’s 2022. You must design for mobile. Apart from being super annoying to the visitor, Google actively penalise sites that do not work responsively. SIX: No CTA’s What do you want people to do exactly? People need direction when visiting a website, and expect it. Make sure that you have clear and easy to find calls to action for your visitor to take, because if you don’t, they will leave. The easier it is for your customer to do what you want them to do, the more conversions you will see. If you’re a struggling DIY-er and would like a few more tips about designing the perfect website, come on over and download the free ‘DIY Like A Pro’ checklist: thesmartwebsitecompany.co.uk/diy-websitechecklist

Academy FM Folkestone not just a radio station

A school isn’t the sort of place you’d expect to find two busy radio studios, but that’s exactly what there is in the Folkestone Academy. The local radio station, 105.9 Academy FM Folkestone is based in the school that inspired its name and broadcasts to the Folkestone urban area and can also be heard on FM in parts of Hythe and the Romney Marsh, and online at www.academyfmfolkestone.com. Academy FM is two things – a local radio station, and an educational charity. The reason for its base in the Academy school is to work with young people, which it does with success, often working with over 800 children a year from the Academy and Primary schools across Folkestone, and winning numerous charity and broadcasting awards. Academy FM’s strengths is that it’s local, and it’s varied. Many of the presenters are adult volunteers from the local area, and some are children. Part of Academy FM’s educational work involves training Academy pupils to broadcast on the radio – they present live on-air and many have considerable confidence. In the national ‘Young Audio Awards’ Academy FM has swept the board in the last few years, winning Station of the Year, two BBC Sounds Awards for teenagers Taya Walters and Tia Brady, plus a second award for Taya this year. Station Manager David Sharp is positive about what

young people get from the station: “It’s a working environment, which not many other young people are used to, so they get experience here that prepares them for later in life. Presenting on the radio gives them selfconfidence and communication skills. In the long term we can have a significant effect on their lives.” Academy FM also delivers projects to local primary schools, funded by organisations such as Sir Roger De Haan’s charitable trust, the National Lottery, and the Kent Community Foundation. These often involve radio station staff bringing visitors into schools for the children to interview on the microphone; “It’s a great way for children to learn new things” says Dave Sharp; “we get experts in to talk about science, history, or people from local businesses to talk about careers, and the children remember it because they have to actually do an interview for the radio, recorded on small recorders right there in the classroom” The radio station’s local focus is obvious, and they have numerous local advertisers and even two business shows. Every year Academy FM broadcasts over 250 interviews about local events, and has busy Breakfast and Morning

50 | www.hythelife.org.uk

shows in particular. Many of these are presented by local people, with a real knowledge of the area: “You just don’t get that on other radio stations – we’re the only one based around here that has this sort of local content” says Dave Sharp. Academy FM also appears at events, this year including the We Love Hythe Life Food Festival, the Venetian Fete, and the Folkestone Air Display. Look out for their gazebo and the mascot, the Folkestone Fox!

Instep

40 years and beyond

and our story of Lockdown by Jackie Mortimer

Just before the first lockdown we were preparing for another weekend of rehearsal with Boomerang Dance (our company of graduate dancers) to complete the commission, we had begun the week before The boy’s (Male Order) and girl’s (Sisters iNstep) projects were completed in the New Year and had gone into rehearsal period, the Companies were working to complete their second pieces We were just weeks away from the Easter break and the MayaKara and Iisanmaaya projects, which had all been planned. Planning with all our regular classes was well underway. We were getting excited as we looked to the final couple of months of intensive rehearsal period to get ready for our 40-year Anniversary shows. We had already prepared running orders for the various shows and I had begun to write the programmes. And then shutdown… It felt like it came suddenly, even though we expected it - I’m not sure we were ready for the duration and as the weeks went by it became obvious that this year’s special show, our 40year anniversary would have to be cancelled. The Instep machine went into action. There was no way we were going to leave our members without some dance activity and a vision of what to look forward to – however many months ahead that might be. We trialed live sessions via Facebook and decided this would offer us an immediate point of contact. Thank you to those teachers who stepped forward to embark on this new style Instep session. We created a special Facebook page (Instep in Isolation) specifically for contacting our members through this period.

58 | www.hythelife.org.uk

(This is worth looking at as it still hosts those sessions and lots of other clips that Instep children send me of their own dancing at home during lockdown and as a result of our sessions). We went live in April 2020 and delivered our sessions through April and into May – two sessions a week - one aimed at our Companies and one at our younger children. We delivered 14 sessions, and really enjoyed the feeling of being together. We organised various quizzes and competitions. Then we thought we would try a new way to deliver practical work – a way of specifically tailoring the work to the various classes. Instep teachers re – organized their homes and gardens to create sessions which they recorded. We uploaded them to Vimeo and sent them out to the various classes via e mail

and Facebook. We did this every week through May and June and July of 2020

Hythe Life_Spring_2022.qxp_Layout 1 27/04/2022 10:58 Page 59

people with a vital way to express themselves and we believed Instep provided a safe haven and a “family ethos” which has over time been an important place for lots of generations of young people to grow. We want to be there for them all and slowly, over recent months, we have returned to a near normal scenario.

During Lockdown I asked Company 1(our senior company of dancers ) if they would like to be involved in creating a dance piece for film. To bring them into one creative space – We shaped their contributions into a new film work which was released in July 2020.

At the same time, I invited all Insteppers to contribute a short clip of themselves dancing to create a Festival Film to celebrate all Insteppers and the range and diversity of our work I was blown away by the number of contributions;

We chose a piece of music with lyrics which resonated with the times and the dancers found the meaning in the words beautifully – on their own without teacher support “ No matter what you’re going through – I will look after you “ https://vimeo.com/instep/review/436687513/ 9635fbe038 Thank you to Nick Dare for his edits in creating this film.

And this became our Festival Film which was released at the beginning of our “show week “ https://vimeo.com/instep/review/438825479/ 51ab22c94c

It was a two-and-a-half-year break from being together in a studio. In the Autumn of 2021, we cautiously ran two projects … again we were interrupted by Covid and had to rethink the way we ran the projects in order to maintain safe practice and keep going in spite of the absences which followed. We created two new works and our longed-for premiere of these works was further delayed when Omicron arrived. Xmas 2021 came, and we were able to share our term’s work with parents in a Covid safe performance at Brockhill in the Peter Catmull Theatre. It was a bit overwhelming to walk into the theatre and see familiar faces there to support their children. Our premiere of our two new works followed in February , at last! Cautiously we are re considering what we need to do to bring back the joy of dance and specifically what it means to the Instep family

Meanwhile I was working with a young film maker Rebekah Arnold who I had asked to create our 40 year anniversary film which would have formed part of our live shows – but now it seemed relevant and important to release it at the end of “ show week “ a marker for 40 years of work with film clips spanning many years drawn from our extensive film archive. https://vimeo.com/instep/review/431178255/ c7ca3efb8b

Instep teachers re – organized their homes and gardens to create sessions which they recorded.

The rest of the year passed with outdoor sessions when the weather allowed (which was most of the time!) We reached the end of July and took our usual break to use the time to plan for a new future with the support of Brockhill School Into the Autumn 2020 and our planned for opening was yet again postponed with another lockdown and we moved to Google Classroom sessions with the support of Brockhill school – delivering our sessions from the studios. Into the New Year and we took a break from online delivery while we worked with Brockhill to develop various scenarios for a safe opening. We spent this time fine tuning our systems for contactless booking of classes, payment systems and registration. We created a plan for a Covid safe opening after Easter which was a monumental task. We knew the arts provide

whilst keeping everyone safe. We’re planning our Summer Season 2022 and working hard against the backdrop of frequent absences to produce shows to be proud of We are considering this to be a re – launch and have high hopes that we can bring dance activity back to our community albeit in a “new way “ Watch this space … Jackie Mortimer Artistic Director and CEO Instep Dance Company www.instepdance.co.uk Photo Credits : Tony Nandi Instep Summer Season 2018/19

People Power: Kent to Kyiv in 60 days

by Charlie Connolly

The Russian invasion of Ukraine that we are observing from afar is harrowing. War crimes are being committed on a daily basis against innocent people. We are lucky not to be living this nightmare first hand and can turn off the images, the sounds - the friendly, warm people of Ukraine do not deserve this. When events were unfolding around Ukraine, Charlie and her Aunt Brenda asked Charlie’s uncle Archie (Russian by birth and a long-term resident of his favoured city Kyiv) to leave, to come back and be safe in the UK. He refused. He wanted to stay, to defend his country and to fight for his way of life. His choice continues to scare Charlie but she is incredibly proud of him. He is still there trying to do what he can. It turns out he has been supporting a cause very important to him; Kyiv’s Children’s Cardiology surgery centre. He has been scouring the city for basic supplies for the centre, which is currently operating out of a basement where babies, some just a few weeks old, are being cared for.

We read, listen and watch the events unfold and continue to feel helpless but Charlie and her friends feel that we can all do something. We can help by raising money for the humanitarian organisations that are on the ground in Ukraine. The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal run by the British Red Cross is well established and is providing food, water, shelter and medical assistance. To raise funds, Charlie, her wife Jacqui and 2 amazing friends Emma and Bex Pope (along with their dogs) plan to virtually cover the equivalent distance to Kyiv from Saltwood Green in Kent. They will walk, cycle, run and swim the 1,434 miles (averaging 25 miles daily) in 60 days - around their safe place in the garden of England. They hope you will support them by sponsoring them for each mile of their journey.

Welcome to the Spring edition of Hythe Life Sports. In this issue we report on some good news for Hythe Town FC fans, look forward to the 2022 cricket season with our local teams and have details of the scenic Folkestone Coastal 10k for the more energetic amongst you. FOOTBALL

Cannons Staying Up!

Results 2021-2022 Season

It will be of some relief to Cannon’s fans that despite their loss to Herne Bay on Easter Monday, due to other results , Hythe’s status as a Isthmian League South-East

(at time of writing)

for the 2022-2023 season was confirmed. A huge relief for the club and fans after what has proved to be an up and down season. With the club having to tighten their belts during these constrained financial times, there been multiple comings and goings both on the player and management side. It is testament to the efforts of the players and the manager that despite all of these challenges the team have avoided relegation this season. Things may get even better as at the time of writing, the Cannons were preparing for their semi-final game in the Kent Senior Cup against fierce local rivals Folkestone Invicta. There is always a bit of spice when the two teams meet and the annual Boxing Day derby was a highlight in years passed when the teams were in the same league. The Cannons have proved themselves to be the Kent Senior Cup penalty kings (see results below) so who knows what will happen. Hopefully as you read this the Cannons are preparing for the Final. Fingers crossed!
