Hythe Watch NEWS FROM HY THE TOWN COUNCIL

Message from the Town Mayor It really has been a pleasure planting trees in Hythe this winter along with volunteers from the Hythe Environmental Community Group, Hythe Civic Society, and other friends. We've also been giving saplings to residents and to schools. Sadly, there has been some theft and vandalism - 147 saplings cut off at the base with secateurs and the canes stolen - but police are dealing with this and it won't deter us. Tree-planting ticks all the boxes in this time of Climate Breakdown and the threat of Mass Extinction. They suck carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen. They also provide habitat for birds and insects that have seen such disastrous decline in their numbers in recent years. And I'm delighted to see that our District Council has also been planting trees in Hythe this winter. Both they and Hythe Town Council have declared a Climate and Ecological Emergency so it's encouraging, but not surprising, that we're both responding positively in this way. There will be more tree-planting in March and then again in November. As a town at risk of flooding and inundation if sea levels continue to rise, Hythe is leading the way . We're inspiring our friends and neighbours and helping to shift the wider discourse towards action and hope.

Councillorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Corner Councillor J Hawkins Hythe Christmas Lights 2019 brought new Christmas lights to the town of Hythe, a five-year project led by Hythe Town Council (HTC) and supported by the Hythe Business and Tourism Association (HBTA) and Hythe Life Magazine at a cost of ÂŁ12,800 per year. The first year received an amazing response, as local businesses, individuals, HBTA and Hythe Life Magazine contributed almost fifty percent of the cost for hire, installation, take down, storage and maintenance of lights along the whole High Street and in five trees. There was also a fantastic response on social media and from members of the public who took the time to write and compliment the lights. As a town council considering its environmental impact and pledging to go carbon neutral by 2025, we aim to encourage people who live locally to shop and socialise in Hythe instead of driving to out of town shopping centres. The town is easily accessible by public transport and offers a wonderful selection of independent shops, cafes and restaurants which we hope will benefit from the atmosphere created by the lights at Christmas. The lights are LED, 95% recyclable and should last well as they are being properly stored, maintained and installed by professionals. Gala Lights is a Kent based company whose suppliers, Leblanc Illuminations are involved with a reforestation programme to offset their carbon emissions. Whilst Christmas is not the most sustainable time of year, HTC believes it would be unrealistic to not have Christmas lights and has aimed to balance the environmental impact with the above considerations.

Eaton Lands Community Orchard Phase 1 of the Community Orchard project commenced at the end of January with 25 volunteers giving up their time to assist with preparing the ground and planting a variety of apple, plum and pear trees. A low wildlife friendly hedge will be planted around two sides of the site, together with four morello cherry and damson saplings. Local schools will be involved in designing information/educational boards, together with publicising the various sponsors. Once completed and installed a formal opening will be arranged. We will also be working with the Bumblebee Trust to develop bee hotels etc and again local schools and disadvantaged groups will be involved.

Refurbish, Renovate and Repair workshops Within the Climate and Ecological Emergency actions, we aim to develop a culture of Refurbish, Renovate and Re-use which will help to reduce items going to landfill or incineration while at the same time reducing consumption of valuable resources. We plan to provide skills workshops, as well as having ethically sourced and sustainable Eco-goods for sale and also a taster point for vegan and vegetarian food. To this end, while we await the outcome of the bid we submitted to F&HDC for support from the High Street Fund for the rental of a pop-up shop, which would be the ideal location for such activities, we have recently launched our Rag Rejuvenation Group. This had a first workshop at the town council offices in Oaklands. The intention is to encourage and equip keen residents to rejuvenate or repair favourite items of clothing in order to reduce the amount of clothing going to landfill sites. We will also establish additional groups to teach basic sewing skills to young people whom we hope will embrace the fashion revolution towards buying less fast fashion and up-cycling existing clothing. Hythe Civic Society 75th anniversary quiz Hythe Town Councillors, along with some of our District Council colleagues and Hythe Town Council officers, were out in force for Hythe Civic Society’s recent 75th anniversary quiz night at the Tin Tabernacle. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening although the cheese round was a challenge for the vegans among us! Many congratulations to the Civic Society for reaching this milestone and for so much good work in that time promoting the well-being of our community, its built environment and its open spaces. Here’s to the next 75 years!

Hythe Museum In March of last year the Museum re-opened and visitors were once again able to view our rooms illustrating the history of Hythe. One new display focussed on “World War 1 in Hythe” and another showed childhood items which would generally have been found in Hythe homes from 1920 to the present day. Both were largely made up of objects and photographs kindly loaned or donated by residents. In fact, the “Remember” display of toys became a fast favourite for grandparents and parents who came in with children. Many items clearly evoked memories as a very frequent phrase heard in the Museum was, “I used to have one of those”. The new year and decade have led to a fresh display being set up - “Going, going, gone”. Cases in the museum now contain memorabilia from Mackeson’s Brewery, as well as photographs of buildings, shops and places no longer found around the town, and a sample of the products once produced at Portex. This again has relied upon the contributions of people around the town supplementing items in the Museum collection. Looking further ahead in to 2020, two more displays are planned: One with memorabilia celebrating 75 years since VE Day and the other presenting 80 years on from when children of Hythe were evacuated from Hythe. For either of these displays we would love to hear from anyone with photographs or items they would be prepared to donate or loan us to put on show. Overall, we want to try and ring the changes for what is on view, as well as extend our collection into as many areas of local history as possible. For this we need local support. Gaps in our archives exist, including anything related to Martello Towers, the Hythe lifeboat, coastal fishing, Hythe Scouts and the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway to name just a few, as well as anything to illustrate what it has been like to live in Hythe and the local area. Over the year ahead it is hoped more residents and visitors to the town will drop into the Museum. Why not call in yourself, especially if it’s been sometime since you last came? A fair number of residents have been active and generous in their support over the last couple of years yet even more would be very welcome with offers to lend or donate items, or photographs, towards current or future exhibitions at the Museum. HTC nominates Jackie Mortimer for KALC award

Positive steps to address the Climate and Ecological Emergency

The Kent Association for Local Councils (KALC) has devised a new award, Person of The Year, and has asked local councils to nominate an appropriate person in their areas. Hythe Town Council unanimously voted for Jackie Mortimer to be the first recipient. Hythe Town Councillor, Penny Graham, who nominated Jackie writes: “As the founder and director of Instep Dance, she has worked tirelessly for over 40 years to develop and maintain the fabulous standard of dance we see today at Brockhill College for the Performing Arts. “The students are committed, enthusiastic and well disciplined. Quite a feat when working with large numbers of hormonal teenagers! Instep consists of small companies which the local community can access, with ages ranging from 2 -72…so pretty inclusive! “Jackie’s approach is totally inclusive of pupils with different abilities and needs, all giving of their best and developing confidence as they work and perform with each other. Jackie also has the gift of being very approachable, with a big heart, is down to earth and exceptionally caring of all her students. She is a natural social worker too as she makes huge efforts to mitigate some of the difficult challenges that some of the young dancers face in their private lives. “She has been hoping to retire for some years (she retired from her teaching roles a while ago but is still involved with Instep), but I will eat my hat and more if this ever happens!”

There’s been a lot happening at Hythe Town Council since our declaration of a Climate and Ecological Emergency. This set a zerocarbon date for the council of 2025 at the latest. First, we have set about measuring and monitoring the council’s carbon footprint and will report annually on progress. A dedicated subcommittee has been set up and a host of steps have kicked off, with others on the way. We have an initial 900 saplings, of a variety of native species, available for planting in the area and to offer to residents. If you’d like to help with the planting, have thoughts of where would benefit or would like one or more saplings, then please make contact. We are looking at improving the energy efficiency of the town council’s own buildings; switching to a renewable energy provider (which is also likely to save several hundred pounds); and studying the viability of electric vehicle charging points and solar panels. We have also started to measure air quality around the town, using a mobile monitor linked to an online app. The results look promising, with detailed, real-time data feeding the app. We have been analysing the situation around local schools and on some of the main roads. If you have a particular area of concern, let us know. Once we have the evidence and baselines then, of course, we will need to work out steps to reduce the pollution. We are also seeking to fund a Pop-up/rental of two shops on the High Street. We need to provide information about what is happening and how we can work together to address the challenges that face us. Therefore, we are seeking a hub on the High Street, where you can drop in and ask questions, contribute your ideas for action and learn new skills for renovation of household items and clothing. There are plenty of other projects bubbling away, including, in the mid-to-long term, some form of electric community transport. We would love your involvement in the above schemes; other ideas; questions and thoughts – please do make contact.

National Coast Watch Institution

Folkestone Station For those who do not know, in 1994 when two fishermen lost their lives off the Cornish coast near a recently closed Coastguard lookout, local people decided to open and restore the visual watch. When this first station was opened at Bass Point on the Lizard, the National Coastwatch Institution was born. Today 56 stations keep a visual watch around the coastline of England and Wales, with more in the pipeline.

The objective of the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) is to assist in the protection and preservation of life at sea and along the United Kingdom coastline. Over 2500 volunteers keep watch around the British Isles from Lancashire, through Wales, to Hornsea in Yorkshire. Folkestone Station at Copt Point was officially opened on the 10th October 1998 and was the first NCI station to be located in Kent. They operate from the old 2nd WW Battery Observation Post situated on the chalk headland overlooking the English Channel in east Folkestone near Martello Tower number 3. The men and women volunteer members of NCI Folkestone provide a vital service to the local community by manning their station 364 days a year between 09:00 to 18:00 or in winter, until dusk They are the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring cliff walkers, inshore water users, marine radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They are trained to deal with emergencies and offer a wide range of

skills and experience including Marine Chart reading and plotting, Ordnance Survey map reading, Vessel Recognition, Local Tidal Flows and First Aid with a defibrillator available at the station during opening hours. Full training by the NCI ensures that high standards and professionalism are met and maintained. NCI work very closely with other emergency and associated agencyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s including Dover Coast Guard, The RNLI, Lydd Air Sea Rescue, Border Force, Kent Police, Folkestone Harbour Board and the Hythe and Lydd Firing Ranges together with a number of other local Channel User communities and we are classified as a Community Asset. In 2011 Folkestone NCI was awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service. This is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the anniversary of The Queen's coronation and is considered to be the MBE for volunteer groups.

NCI do not receive any central funding and their existence relies totally upon funds raised within the local community. NCI membership is voluntary; therefore, every penny raised locally is spent on maintaining the station and its equipment so they can continue to serve our coastal community. Their Fund Raising activities include collections at local supermarkets, attending local events such at the Donkey Darby and the Harbour Trawler Race and are constantly seeking other avenues and sponsors to assist with their running costs. I am very fond of this extract from an old Scottish gardening book, most of which reads like a tale created by Chaucer; more poetry than instruction with its charming cadence. It is reassuring that not much changes when it comes to how to feed/protect your soil, and it really is an easy and satisfying practice to enjoy, even more so if you’re able to create your own mulch. Biodegradable mulching is important in a number of ways, not least blocking out the light from weed seedlings, retaining moisture, and supplementing soil nutrients. This valuable organic matter also maintains and feeds the essential soil organism community below the

larger areas of the garden, especially areas of bare soil. To prepare, hand-removing or hoeing is important to discourage weeds that have a tendency to take over. This year, the ground elder I have previously tackled is smaller and weaker, so I’ve simply hoe’d off the new growth and laid down mulch straight away. It’s less disruptive in this case to weaken the roots of this pesky perennial by taking away its energy supply, than it is to rotovate or try to hand remove each weed. However, weeds with more fibrous roots, like hairy bitter cress, should be removed completely before laying mulch. There are many different types of mulch;

If, like me, you’ve decided to keep your Dahlia tubers in the ground this year, rather than lift them, you would have put them to bed already in late autumn/early winter, before the frosty mornings creep in. I use a mixture of ‘HotBin’ garden compost and leaf mould, and an added nibbler deterrent: a wire mesh ring. All tender perennials benefit from this treatment, as it protects the roots from extreme temperatures. Mulching around hardier flowers, shrubs and trees can be done in autumn or spring. If you are looking for something to protect your soil now, however, it is late winter/early spring that you can mulch

homemade compost (a balance of brown and green material) combined with leaf mould is my favourite. However, if you don’t have the room or time for a compost and leaf bin, consider these options: • Grass clippings: Used fresh, these can be used to mulch the lawn if left after mowing, but they can also be used as mulch on bare soil or vegetable crops. They contain high amounts of nitrogen, cool the root zone and conserve moisture. • Straw: This will take longer to break down, and can appear messy, but is an excellent weed-suppressant. ‘Strulch’ is worth looking into for its more earthy brown colour, neutral pH and ability to mat together rather than be blown about like straw. • Wood/bark chippings: A more decorative option, this can be applied at any time of the year-unless the soil is very dry. Chippings are less likely to compact, but take much longer to break down and benefit the soil, so is more for visual impact. • Newspaper shredding: As organic ink is used, this is a great option for suppressing weeds and retaining moisture. If you’re concerned about a lack of nutrients, another layer of mulch can be added on top. There are non-biodegradable options out there, such as synthetic fabric or gravel, but I would always encourage you to use a product that will benefit the soil and its structure in the long term, if possible. E-WASTE What is E-Waste? Anything with a plug and/or a battery: laptops, tablets, mobiles, but also – hairdryers, electric fires, hair curlers, vacuum cleaners, light bulbs, batteries (including hearing aid) and even down to electrical wire.

What’s the problem? • We live in a throwaway society where electronic gadgets are quickly discarded and replaced with new. E-Waste is becoming the fastestgrowth waste stream in the world. • Because most of us don’t use the recycling facilities that exist, only about 20% of global E-Waste is formally recycled, with the remaining 80% being incinerated or dumped in landfill. Most electronic devices contain toxic materials such as mercury and lead as well as other harmful chemicals which, when disposed of improperly, can pollute the air and soil and seep into water sources. • The mining of precious metals and minerals has caused conflict, hardship and exploitation of child labour.

What are the economics of recycling? • It is much less expensive and environmentally damaging to reclaim the precious metals and minerals than it is to extract new from the ground. There is more gold in a ton of used mobiles then in a ton of gold ore. ”Gold worth more than £7bn is amongst the 42m tons of electrics discarded by consumers globally each year (UN). In the next six years the UK will purchase over 10 million tons of electronics and these will contain approximately 20 tons of gold, 400 tons of silver and seven tons of platinum. But instead of re-using it, we throw it away • In addition to the value of the materials, E-Waste recycling is funded by the electronic goods suppliers who pay into The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Fund, so we pay for it in the cost of goods. Let’s get our money’s worth and make sure that our E-Waste gets to the recycling plant.

But it’s not very “Green” to get in the car and take it to the dump (and I’m not going on the bus!) • Keep a separate box somewhere for E-Waste and take it up there when it’s full and you are going in that direction. • If you don’t have transport, then see if you can find a friend or neighbour who can take it when they go next. If you can’t find anyone, then post on our Facebook page or email us asking for assistance. Someone will help you. • When you buy new electronics, ask if the supplier will take the old device for recycling. • If you shop near a Currys PC World, they will take ANY E-Waste for recycling.

What else can I do? • Collect your used batteries and either take them to any shop that sells electronic goods (they will have a collection point) or put them in a clear plastic bag and leave on top of your paper recycling box for pick up by the council. • Use less: Do you really need to upgrade electronic gadgets so often? Do you have to buy new? Can you borrow? • Give things away on Freecycle and let someone else enjoy them. At least 30% of items thrown away still work. • Sell old working mobile phones or give them (working or not) to the many charities who collect them for recycling. • Any questions? are Poland bound Five Hythe Explorer Scouts have been selected to represent the District at EJ2020, an International Scouting Jamboree in Poland, this summer. It’s a huge leap from Hythe to Gdańsk, & before being in Scouts, I didn’t know what Jamborees even were. In the dictionary it states…. Jamboree 1. a large celebration or party, typically a lavish & boisterous one. | 2. a large rally of Scouts or Guides.

Sounds great fun, doesn’t it? EJ2020 will see 25,000 scouts & guides from over 100 countries come together for cultural exchange designed to develop a global understanding of issues facing us all. EJ2020’s theme is ACT; the main goal is to encourage us to discover our potential for change, & raise our awareness of challenges for Europe, the World & our local communities. EJ2020 aims to teach us how to embrace challenges, develop self-reliance, build self-confidence & spark the need for continuous self-improvement, as well as provide us with an adventure we’ll talk about for years to come. Lucy T: I’ve been part of the Scouting “family” since I was 5, Rainbows, Brownies, Scouts & now Explorers (previously called Venture Scouts), plus I’m a Cubs Young Leader. I enjoy singing & tennis. After completing the Bronze & Silver Duke of Edinburgh awards, I hope to do Gold but need to concentrate on GCSE exams first. I’m adventurous; loving outdoor activities & travelling, but EJ2020 will push me out of my comfort zone. For starters, it is an 18-hour coach journey & I’ll miss being away from my family (yes, even my sister!).

Jacob: I am 14, and have been in scouting since I was 6, that’s 8 years! I’ve really enjoyed the opportunities that scouting has given me, especially the camping. I also love swimming and play the drums. I do a lot of cycling, and I often see heaps of litter and fly tipping by the roads, rivers and canal. I think that EJ2020 would be a great opportunity for me to learn more about the environmental impact of litter in our world, discuss solutions with other young people, and bring the knowledge home to act on and share with others.

Mia: I am a 15-year-old Explorer Scout & I am also a young leader for Saltwood Cubs. I’ve been in scouting since the age of 7 & thoroughly enjoy it. I have recently completed my bronze & silver Duke of Edinburgh awards, which brought me confidence and a sense of achievement. I also aim to do my Gold! I enjoy the outdoors, baking, animals & helping others. EJ2020 will be an exciting adventure, it will help me develop my confidence, improve society and take part in an experience that not everyone gets the opportunity to have.

Lucy K: I’m 14, a member of Trident Explorers & a young leader with Saltwood Cubs. I am looking forward to meeting people from different countries at EJ2020, taking part in exciting activities and challenging myself. I never got to meet my grandfather, but he went to the Paris World Jamboree in 1948, so I am taking his beret with all the badges he got there, as a bridge between the generations.

Emily: I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to attend EJ2020 - it promises to be a great experience that will allow me to meet many new people and take part in a range of exciting activities. More recently, I have become interested in environmental concerns and see this trip as a ‘once in a lifetime experience’ that will help me to make wiser and more beneficial decisions in the future.

“Adios fine friends, colleagues & acquaintances!” Shirley’s farewell note to her involvement in the wonderful We Love Hythe Life food festival. We always talk about how fast the hands of the clock turn these days and in this instance are no diﬀerent. Flash back to five years ago when the Hythe Life team were sitting in a meeting on a balmy Saturday afternoon in Saltwood. We were discussing options on how to generate a feel-good buzz in Hythe and generate more revenue for the town through our Community Interest Company. We already had our much loved Hythe Life magazine but we quickly realised that there was a limit to what we could achieve from a growth point of view due to a number of factors including geographic spread and delivery (which we have had to do ourselves on many occasions!). The ideas and suggestions were bouncing back and forth with pros and cons quickly being highlighted, most of the thoughts destined for the bin. When finally the light bulb moment arrived, we were all in immediate agreement. We found a seed of an idea that had growth potential, was flexible, fun, entertaining and something that would be talked about all year round. It would bring the town together, ending balmy summers on a positive happy note; we had it. A food festival.

And so the We Love Hythe Life Food Festival 2016 came to fruition. Hemanshu, Tristan and myself were beyond excited and we started the planning immediately. Over several months, we learnt (very quickly) every aspect of major event management. Little did we know just how quickly the festival would become Hythe’s biggest annual gathering of local and non-locals. If we knew that at the beginning, we would have laughed at the idea and fainted at the thought. We found the perfect site, Hythe’s iconic cricket ground, and filled with total and utter fear, as well as in trepidation at the sheer scale of the size of event. It dawned on us – the size of the land we were to fill - we’d done the hard bit, we had all of the exhibitors booked, so that was not a concern, but the people?? Would they come? We needn’t have worried. You arrived in your droves and ate, drank and danced the bank holiday away in 2016. Not only did you arrive but so did the sunshine, making all of those sun dances we had been practicing totally worthwhile. Three days of brilliant fun, laughter, catch-ups and memories made.

The event was a resounding success and here we are ready to launch year 5. This year however, there will be a diﬀerence, as I will be stepping down in my role as one of the organisers and founding members of the festival team. It’s a decision made with a heavy heart. You are all aware that we run this festival as volunteers and, as a community interest company, all the work behind the scenes is done in our spare time. Having involvement in several businesses, as well as this magazine, has meant that dedicating the time required for the ever-growing festival has become unachievable. We all had our businesses at the time we setup the festival, but as the festival has grown, so have our businesses and so my time isn’t as flexible as it was. So it is with mixed emotions that I say goodbye to the team and wish them every bit of success for the years to come. I am thankful to Hythe Life for allowing me to be able to fulfil a lifelong dream of bringing a festival to Hythe. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved and that we have turned an idea into a must go-to annual event that is marked down in calendars up and down the county. I am proud that we have given the town more events to enjoy with family and friends. I am proud that we have helped to raise even more money for charities and causes that helps those in most need within our beautiful community. I am proud that the festival has acted as a catalyst for other wonderful events to start and give Hythe a sense of togetherness. I am also proud of how the wonderful people of Hythe backed and supported us all the way in our endeavours and took no persuasion to get out there and join in to help raise much needed funds for great causes in and around Hythe. Well done Hythe! Well done team. And here’s to another five years of success for the We Love Hythe Life Food Festival. May they be as fruitful and abundant as the years before and I look forward to attending as a guest this year.

purple sprouting broccoli, gnocchi & spring onion butter sauce Top tip: Use fresh halibut and not frozen! Find a reputable fish monger you can trust so you can be sure the quality of the fish is supreme.

700g halibut fillet 20 spears of purple sprouting broccoli 1 head of maitake mushrooms 1 bunch spring onions finely sliced

250g Maris piper potatoes peeled 80g plain flour 50g finely grated parmesan 3 egg yolks 5g salt

Start by preparing the halibut. Get your fishmonger to skin the fillet for you, then you need to generously sprinkle the fillet on both sides with fine salt. Place this on a tray, clingfilm and leave to cure in the fridge for 4 hours. This will firm the flesh and make it much easier to confit without it falling apart. Once it has cured, wash the fillet well under cold running water and soak in cold water for 20 minutes. Pat dry and portion into 150g portions. The gnocchi To make the gnocchi, you will need to boil the potatoes until just cooked, pass them oďŹ&#x20AC; and allow to air dry before passing through a drum sieve. While the potato is still warm add the rest of the ingredients and gently mix in until fully incorporated. Dust your surface with plain flour and roll the gnocchi out in a long sausage roughly 2 cm thick, them cut the rolls of gnocchi every 2cm to create little pillows. These can then be blanched in salted boiling water for 3 minutes and refreshed in ice water. Drain them and store on a tray in the fridge until needed. The butter sauce To start the butter sauce, sweat the sliced shallots and mushrooms in 50g of butter for 5 minutes until they are soft, add a generous pinch of salt followed by the Noilly Prat.

You want to reduce the vermouth by 2/3. This can then be stained into a small saucepan. Add a tiny drop of cream and bring this back to the boil. Then gradually whisk in approximately 75g of butter or enough to create a sauce thick enough to coat the back of a metal spoon. Season this to your taste with salt and a squeeze of lemon juice. The finsh To start to finish the dishes, you want to bring 500ml of extra virgin olive oil to 60C over a very low heat. Add the fillets of halibut to the oil which will reduce the heat to 55C, regulate the temperature of the oil and cook the halibut for 15 minutes at 55C. While the fish is cooking you can blanch the broccoli for 3 minutes in boiling salted water, reheat the gnocchi in the butter sauce gently with the spring onions, and sautĂŠ the maitake mushrooms over a high heat in butter and a pinch of salt. Once all these elements are ready the dish can be plated and is ready to be served. Lift the halibut out of the oil using a fish slice and place under a hot grill for 20 seconds. Place this on the plate followed by the mushrooms, gnocchi then the broccoli. Finish with plenty of the spring onion butter sauce! ...& enjoy!

Welcome to the Spring edition of Hythe Life Sports. In this issue we report on how Hythe FC are faring as they hopefully continue to make a charge towards the league playoffs. We hear how Saltwood CC are preparing for the new cricket season and have details of how you can shake off winter by running in two excellent local running events.

FOOTBALL

Crunch time for the Cannons As regular readers of Hythe Sports will know (there must be a least one of you out there!) the Cannons had a turbulent start to the 2019/20 season which led to an early change of manager. New man Steve Watt managed to steady the ship and has spent the season stamping his mark on the team. This has inevitably led to lots of comings and goings in respect of team personnel and it would be fair to say that there has been a lengthy transition period this season. Time will tell whether this will mean that the Cannons miss out on a play off space but at the time of writing their play off chances are on a knife edge. Many of the teams above have games in hand although Hythe have games against three of them albeit the current league leaders and the second and fourth placed teams. With a couple of games against those just above and below and also a few against bottom placed clubs, the club’s finishing position is still in their hands. Let’s hope in the next edition we will be reporting on a successful run in and playoff campaign and promotion (it doesn’t hurt to dream). Whatever happens it is clear that Steve Watt is building an excellent foundation for future success.

Saltwood CC Club Chairman Ian Oakes has kindly provided us with a report on Saltwood’s preparations for the 2020 season: “We are all looking forward to another great season at Saltwood Cricket Club. We play league cricket on Saturday and Sunday from May to September and our ever popular junior cricket starts in April for boys and girls aged 5 upwards. Saltwood CC is a family friendly club and we welcome new players of any age or ability. We are very grateful to the Hythe Life Magazine team for their continued support and sponsorship. You don’t have to be a paid up member to enjoy Saltwood Cricket Club, everyone is welcome to watch our home matches at our ground on Tanners Hill. Visit saltwoodcc.com to find out when we are playing. The juniors are led by our enthusiastic and qualified coaches with help from the club’s senior players. The junior section is once again supported by ‘Hythe Bay Financial’ who are kindly providing free club t-shirts for all junior members. Years 1 & 2 can sign up to our All Stars Cricket programme, Year 3 to 6 will be playing Kwik Cricket (orange softball) and Year 7 upwards will be playing hardball or softball cricket and all equipment is provided. Saltwood CC will be running two Open Days where you can come along and have a go for free. Our junior section is all about having fun in a safe environment. All abilities are catered for and we have lots of complete beginners joining every year. The first session is completely free so your kids can have a go before signing them up. RUNNING

Events This year’s London Marathon takes place on Sunday 26th April and we would like to wish all those from the local area who taking part the best of luck. If after watching the event you feel inspired to either take up running for the first time or get back to it after a break, there are two local running events in May that might just provide you with the much needed inspiration and opportunity. The 17th May sees the return of the annual Hythe Rotary ‘Round the Houses’ running event. Now in it’s 30th year this ever popular event has a host of races in and around the centre of the town for both adults and children. It is very much a family friendly community event with something for everyone and a chance to PB on what is a fast and flat course. This year sees Hythe’s very own Olympian Jack Green attending the event and presenting the prizes to the worthy winners of each race. As always the event will be supporting local causes. For further information and details on how to enter go to www.rthouses.com If you are looking for a slightly longer race then the Folkestone Coastal 10k is the one for you. Now in it’s 9th year, this race is perfect for those new to running or the more experienced runner looking for PB. This years race takes place on May 31st. The race starts on Folkestone seafront then continuing to Hythe and back on a flat, fast, traffic free route. There is chip timing and prizes for the fastest finishers in each age category. HL Sports Welcome to our new regular spot telling you about Rotary’s activities in Hythe. We have been keeping our light too much under a bushel, but now find that we need to inform and involve the community more in what we are doing. So our articles will tell you about our planned activities and, if you want to know more, please do ask us, or, if you have a function or activity that might need our help, again, just ask. If we can, we will. In this edition we are presenting two projects to give you a flavour of what we do. These relate to our work with the youth and schools in our area. Round the Houses

THYNK

This is an old friend. We have been organising the “Round the Houses” running event for 30 years, and seen it grow into a calendar fixture. This year we are supported by Jack Green, our Olympic Hurdler and current record holder. He will be both presenting the prizes and posting regular items on our Facebook page about how to get more enjoyment out of running, as well helping us to stay fit and healthy. For those of you who do not know about the event, please go to the website, www.rthouses.co.uk This explains the plans, routes and races to be held and also provides a booking system for those who want to run. There are 9 races over set distances for all age groups, with at least a capacity of 100 for each race. This is a family day, not just a sports event, so please book the date in your diary, 17 May 2020.

This is another venture we have begun in co-operation with Brockhill Park Performing Arts College. We call it THYNK.(Things You Do Not Know) It has been so successful that plans are being laid to roll it out across all senior schools in our region. It is accepted that there is only so much that can be taught in the classroom, and sometimes there is no space or time in the curriculum to talk about “The Outside World”, or “Life Skills”. The young people of Brockhill working together with Rotary are trying to change that. In dialogue with the students, we create a series of topics and bring in experts from the community to talk about what it is really like, for example, to go to work and be paid, manage finance and tax and find ways of staying healthy, including how to identify and cope with depression. This way, the community benefits because students leave school with a wider appreciation of what they will encounter after school, develop positive coping strategies and know how to seek out further sources of information and assistance. A website will be used to retain short summaries of the topics covered to provide a permanent reminder of issues and solutions. Did You Know? Finally, in the ‘Did You Know?’ category, did you know that we are part of group of Rotary Clubs running various competitions, all designed to develop important life skills. These include: Youth Speaks, Young Writer, Young Chef, and Young Artist? Also did you know that when you see a local school minibus, the driver is probably a Rotarian. There is lots more to tell you.
