The Great Battle that Never Was

The History of the Royal Military Canal Written by Jenni Bayliss on behalf of the Hythe Businesss and Tourism Association

Napoleon Bonaparte was feeling confident. Riding high after his successful military campaigns during the French Revolution, the self-crowned Emperor now set his sights on England. Previous threats to invade Britain had come to nothing. In 1793 Napoleon had declared war on Britain and though there were battles with British troops on foreign soil, Napoleon hadn’t actually made it across the channel. The Treaty of Ameins in 1802 brought a welcome peace between the two nations but it was short-lived. By 1803 we were at war with France again and this time Bonaparte meant business. In 1804 Napoleon had 2000 boats and 130,000 troops ready and waiting along the coast of Boulogne to strike out across the channel. The most obvious choices for invasion were the shortest routes across the water: Dover, Chatham and the Romney Marshes. Britain was gripped by the fear of attack. It had long been decided that the quickest way to thwart an invasion on the South East coast was to flood the Marshes, rendering them impassable to enemy troops.  However, in reality this action would take ten days to implement; not terribly practical in the event of a surprise attack… Not to mention the awkward conversations with angry farmers if it turned out to be a false alarm: “Oops! We didn’t need to flood your fields after all. Sorry about that!” Luckily Lt-Col John Brown had a cunning plan. He suggested building a canal to run behind the coast between Seabrook and the River Rother near Rye. This would be a hidden, armed waterway along which troops could be quickly and discreetly moved along the coast.  The earth dug out of the ditch would be banked up to form a parapet behind which troops could be positioned unseen. Regular

bends in the canal would allow enfilading canon fire i.e. at these points the canons could fire lengthways down the canal if enemy troops tried to cross. Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger thought it was a great idea and quickly gave the go-ahead. And so in autumn 1804, led by consultant engineer, John Rennie, digging began on the Royal Military Canal.    It was tough work. The weather was often against them. The team dug with shovels and picks and as fast as they dug, the ditch filled with water which had to be pumped out by hand. The only way to move the tons of sodden earth was by wheelbarrows and horse and cart. By 1805, with the threat of invasion still looming, the project was massively behind schedule. Something had to be done. Rennie resigned, his workers were relieved of their duties and in 1805 Lt-Col Brown took over the task of the canal’s construction. Instead of using contractors, Brown hired civilians and soldiers to work on the canal and the project began to gather pace.      At the same time Brigadier General William Twiss began work on a series of Martello towers. These giant defences, shaped like upturned buckets, had massively thick round walls which made them resistant to cannonballs. Their roofs housed large guns, with further gunfire possible through slits in the walls.  There were seventy four Martello Towers in total; twelve of them in Hythe, three of which still stand today. With imposing Martello Towers at the fore and the cannon-studded canal running behind, the Romney Marshes

would be well protected. If it was ever finished, that is. The canal was supposed to be 62-feet wide throughout but in many places it was much thinner, leading peers of the time to question just how effective a defence the canal might be. The biggest criticism of the feat, however, was the length of time it took to complete it.  By the time the canal was ready for action in 1809, the threat of a French invasion had passed. After a punishing defeat at the Battle of Trafalgar, Napoleon had given up on the English and set his sights on the Austrians instead.  However, its place in the heart of Hythe life endures as it wends its gentle way through the town. It may not have been the great protector it was intended to be but it delights those who like messing about in boats, and thrills as the stage for the Hythe Venetian Fete. It also provides a picturesque backdrop through every season for walkers and joggers and wildlife spotters, and a quiet haven for those seeking a tranquil moment away from the bustle of the town. Lt-Col Brown, we salute you.

Message from the  Town Mayor The Annual Town meeting was held on April 19th and was slightly different this year. Local organisations showcased Hythe town mayor Cllr Paul Peacock their achievements and aspirations with table top displays and everyone had the opportunity to exchange views, news and ideas. I was also very pleased to receive the nominations for our new Citizen of the year award and present certificates to all who attended and do so much for our community. Of course there can only be one winner and Gail East pipped the others to the post. All the nominees clearly care about the health and vitality of local residents and I felt very humbled to hear their stories. I have also sadly attended two funerals recently of others who did much for Hythe. Cllr Denise Maskell lost her battle with cancer and will always be remembered for her passion for animal welfare and dedication to protecting our open spaces. We also lost Denise Rayner a well-known local resident who keenly followed the actions of Hythe Town Council for many years. A local historian she also valued our open spaces – in particular Hythe Green. Two lovely women who certainly left their mark on the Town they loved. I will close by saying how honoured I have felt to represent you as Town Mayor throughout the last Civic year. Apart from my role as Chairman of the Council at meetings I have represented Hythe at many functions throughout Kent and beyond. I have also raised money for The Mayors Charity Fund and this has been distributed to local groups, individuals and charities to help support them. Whatever age or gender you are, we encourage you to find a sport that you can take part in. At the South Road sports field, the council provides tennis courts, a skate park, bowls and football, while it also acts as landlord to the cricket, bowls and tennis clubs. The magnificent sports pavilion provides good quality changing facilities with space for fitness classes and other activities on the higher floor. Yet sport can never be entirely risk free. The council was delighted to be able to install a defibrillator at the sports pavilion which will be available for use at all times while the changing rooms are open.

Denise Maskell A much respected, independently minded and likeable Hythe town councillor has sadly died, eventually succumbing to cancer. Amongst other deeply held views, Denise was passionate about protecting the environment, animal welfare and local politics. As a representative of East Hythe ward, she made sure that the views of Horn Street and Seabrook residents were properly represented in council meetings, and she was always prepared to stand up for what she thought was right. A staunch vegetarian and campaigner for wildlife, she fought to maintain local history and save open spaces. She would often politely but firmly disagree with some of her fellow councillors, but she always commanded respect for her insights and knowledge. Hythe Town Council offers its deepest condolences to her husband Alan..

Hythe Citizen of the Year Awards The council launched its inaugural Citizen of the Year Awards at the start of this year’s annual town meeting on 19th April. The aim was to celebrate and recognise the town’s wonderful volunteers. We put out a call for residents to nominate someone who helps out in the town. We were delighted to receive some very high quality nominations, for some simply amazing volunteers.  The winner on the night was Gail East, Gail East Receiving her award from Paul Peacock but the judging panel identified six finalists who would also have been worthy winners. They are listed by in alphabetical order by first name below.

Anne Shapter Anne is a volunteer co-ordinator at AgeUK, and also volunteers with Hythe Brownies. Anne’s commitment to AgeUK clients has helped many elderly people stay independent. Anne’s activities have made a real difference to people’s lives. Gail East Gail is a remarkable example of all that is best about Hythe. She volunteers for the Guides where she is a long standing committee member. She raises funds for and supports the RNLI and is known as a backbone of the Women’s Institute. She has also helped out with youth football .Gail is known as a brilliant neighbour, looking out for her community.

John Wren John’s commitment to local voluntary organisations is extraordinary. He provides volunteer help for the Scouts, St Leonard’s Church, Hythe Rotary, Shelterbox, the Venetian Fete and Hythe Festival. On top of that, he is also a driver for the Hythe Community minibus. Kenza Bowman Kenza founded the female running group ‘Hythe Blister Sisters’. She has won volunteer of the year at the 2015 Shepway Sports Trust Awards and is known for her infectious enthusiasm. Kenza gives confidence and encouragement to women of whatever age, size or ability to get back into physical activity, with some going from practically no exercise to running marathons.

Did you notice?

A shiny future – the new metal noticeboards are designed to last for years

A lot of the council’s attention these days is on developing its digital strategy – more web content, easier navigation etc. While we encourage residents to shift their focus online when it comes to your local council information, we are also aware that not everyone is comfortable with newer communications technologies. That’s one reason why we put out a printed quarterly news update inside Hythe Life magazine, and of course council meetings are both open to all residents if they wish to attend and physically take place in the town hall much as they have done for hundreds of years. There’s no turning back: the government and local councils like Hythe have a digital first communications strategy, and that will not change. Notices, policies and other documents are posted to the website first with much more content than will fit on a physical noticeboard. While we update the website every day, we typically update the noticeboards once a week.

Paul Fagg Paul is a young man who shows an amazing community spirit. He helps elderly neighbours with gritting when there is snow on the ground, walks people’s dogs, collects and recycles old metal and has even done a parachute jump for charity. He volunteers every week at Elham Valley Vineyard. Sally Chesters Sally’s range of voluntary activities is legendary. She organises the beautiful flowers for Hythe in Bloom, the Hythe Town Walks, and helps with the Hythe Farmers’ market and the Civic Society. With both flair and a commercial eye, Sally is a real boon to the community. The awards ceremony and annual town meeting together have yet to be reviewed by the town council, however earlier indications are that the evening was a success, and the format will probably be repeated next year. If you know someone who you feel should have been nominated, make a note now, and be sure to let us know in good time before the next annual town meeting.

12 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

Stopping the rot – the old noticeboards were beyond repair

However, renewing the council’s noticeboards is a recognition that many residents expect and prefer to read physical notices. The old wooden noticeboards had fallen into disrepair and were starting to rot. The new metal versions that were installed in March should last for years.

A safe investment It’s always satisfying to have a clear out, and when you run a small organisation or small business, it’s also an important piece of housekeeping to ensure you don’t get overwhelmed with paper. That’s just as true of the council offices an anywhere else. Nowadays, most correspondence is digital and to conform the government’s transparency regulations, we put agendas, minutes, policies and financial statements on line as soon as we can. Recently, council officers spent a day turning out some of the old junk. Inevitably in an exercise like this you find some hidden gems – historic documents, objects and artefacts which we never knew existed. Hythe museum was the first beneficiary of these finds, but what do with all the obsolete office equipment we found including an old-fashioned, re-enforced safe? With a move to digital banking, the council keeps very little cash on the premises, so the safe was just a big chunk of metal taking up unnecessary space. Experienced Ebayer and mayoress Wendy Peacock took up the challenge and listed it for auction in aid of the town mayor’s charity. The winning bidder was local repair engineer Steve Cox who originally bid £70 and topped it up to £100 when he found out the proceeds would go to charity. Steve plans to shot blast the old safe and restore it as a piece of decorative furniture.

Are you a dog lover or a loser? We love dogs, we hate dog mess. We want to encourage responsible dog owners by providing dog waste bins at the appropriate places. That’s why Hythe Town Council has provided extra bins at Eaton Lands so that everyone can enjoy the parkland without having to worry about what might be underfoot. Please look out for signage from the district council. The beach from the junction of St Leonard’s Road and West Parade to the junction of Twiss Road and Princes Parade has a dog restriction zone as have many of the parks.  Responsible dog ownership means always picking up after your dog. To help other users of public, private and council facilities, it would be useful to always pick up after your dogs wherever they are, including fields and woods in the wider countryside.

What you must know before choosing a care home By Phil Barker

Choosing a care home is a vital decision for your family with many factors to consider, from the level of care required to whether it’s a place you feel your loved one will be happy to call home. Phil Barker advises on what to look for, and which questions to ask, when visiting a care home.

Choosing your new home has always been a big decision. When you rented or bought your first home, you most likely thought carefully about what was right for you and viewed a number of places before making your final choice. Picking a care home for your family member is no different.

Understanding the differences between residential care homes and nursing homes Before you start to visit care homes, it’s essential to understand the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home and consider which is the best choice for your loved one, both now and in the future.  Both provide a secure and safe environment where your loved one can receive the care and support they need, however a significant factor to consider is the level and complexity of your loved ones’ nursing needs. Nursing homes have qualified specialist nurses on duty at all times, enjoy a higher staff to resident ratio, and are fully equipped to deal with all levels of care and health needs.  Choosing a care home When choosing a care home, it is vital to carry out some simple research on the quality of the care being provided by the various homes in your chosen area. Start by asking friends and family for recommendations. Take a look at a home’s website and Facebook page, and request a brochure to learn more about the care home before your visit.  The Care Quality Commission (CQC) produces reports on all care homes in England;

16 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

make sure you read these reports to help you understand the home’s quality of care. You can also check the home’s personal reviews by visiting www.mostrecommendedcare.co.uk or www.carehome.co.uk.

Visiting care homes At our three nursing homes around the Hythe area, we welcome visits from potential residents and their families, and encourage them to have a look round, talk to our staff and perhaps even spend the day with us. What’s important to your family member is always a personal thing.  But there are some essentials I strongly suggest you keep an eye out for when visiting a care home.  Start by assessing the location of the care home – whether it’s in easy reach of friends and family, if it has enough parking spaces and whether it’s in an attractive setting.  When you arrive at the home, think about how you are received, how friendly the staff are and how inviting the home and its gardens feel. Check that it is clean and smells pleasant, and whether the lounge areas and bedrooms are attractive, comfortable and well-decorated. Pay attention to whether members of staff are sitting chatting to residents and whether there are activities going on.  One of the reasons why people decide to move into a care home, after living independently, is that they sometimes feel lonely or isolated in their own home. When you visit a care home, it’s important to check whether there are plenty of residents who you feel your family member could socialise with and make friends.

10 questions to ask during your care home visit 1.

What is the CQC rating and what does     their report say? 2. What is the ratio of staff to residents? 3.    What qualifications do staff have and how are they trained? 4.    What is the turnover of staff? 5.    Can residents choose their daily routine? 6.    Do they employ an activities coordinator and what activities are available? 7.    Are there any visitor restrictions? 8.    How often do other health staff such as opticians, dentists and chiropodists visit residents? 9.    How does the home support those with dementia? 10.  Can the home cope if my needs change or increase?

Singing for Wellbeing By Alex McNeice

silver Arch studios Community Projects (sAsCP) is a shepway organisation using music-based projects to benefit the community.

Music is well known to do so much for people, especially in a group situation.  Through their projects they aim to help improve the lives of four key groups: • Children • The elderly • People living with disabilities • People living in social or economic deprivation What can music bring you?  Many studies and projects show a huge range of social benefits, including improved communication skills, reduced loneliness and improved social mobility, and raised self-confidence.  Health benefits include improvements in breathing and general fitness, and singing has been specifically seen to help with asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and other lung conditions. Far more important than any of the above, for many people, is the opportunity it brings to meet new people, and to be involved in a community all enjoying music together.   Combining all of these, SASCP have set up various projects aimed at bringing music to the community.

The Seaside Melody Makers The Seaside Melody Makers is a singing group for anyone over 60 and is designed so that anyone can join.  There is no requirement for any previous singing experience, no auditions, and you do not need to be able to read music. The group sings all kinds of music, ranging from songs from shows to modern pop, from the traditions of the music hall to the hits of the 60s and 70s.  The sessions are lively, fun and informal, with a drink (and biscuit!) break.

20 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

Certainly not to be missed! They meet weekly at Wood Avenue Library, Wood Avenue, Folkestone CT19 6HS on Wednesdays from 11am-12.30pm. The suggested donation is £4.

The Hawkinge Howlers The Hawkinge Howlers is a group based at Hawkinge House (a care home for people with dementia).  The group has been set up to bring the community together with dementia sufferers and their carers.  Anyone is welcome to go along and sing with this amazing group. Singing does so much for people with dementia, acting as a memory aid, a communication tool, a source of enjoyment and a release from many of the symptoms dementia can bring.  By including the community and their carers, the group has ensured that everyone present can be immersed in the music and truly part of the group, no matter their ability to join in! This group is free to anyone, and meets at Hawkinge House, Hurricane Way, Hawkinge CT18 7SS on Wednesdays from 2-3pm.  Other Projects As well as these projects, SASCP also works closely with MASC (Music and Arts for the Shepway Community) and is involved with: Shepway Voices – a free choir for adults meeting on Wednesday nights. Shepway Youth Voices – a free choir for people of secondary school age meeting on Wednesdays from 6-7.15pm. Shepway Primary Singers – a free choir for children of primary school age meeting on Wednesdays at Wood Avenue Library, Folkestone from 4.30-5.45pm.

Martello Centre – a weekly session at the Martello Care Centre for people with significant mental and physical disability.

• Do you want to sing? • Are you over 60? Come and join

The Seaside Melody Makers! When – Wednesdays from 11:00am – 12:30pm Where – Wood Avenue Library  Folkestone CT19 6HS Suggested Donation - £4 per week We are a group where anyone can come and sing.  You do not need to read music.  You do not need to have sung before.  You just need to want to join in!  This group is for anyone who wants to just have fun singing.

Simple Habits that will improve

5 Your Life there are some habitual behaviours that are extremely positive in nature. But you probably have some bad habits, and there are also probably some areas in your life where you would like to see better results. since the latest research shows that as much as 45% of human behaviour is habitual, it makes sense to establish as many good habits in your life as possible. Here are five simple habits which can lead to improvements and achievement in several areas of your life.

1

Start Your Day Earlier

Significant research shows the benefits of rising early. Your brain and body become healthier and stronger, goal achievement and productivity are enhanced, and career success is more likely. Get to bed earlier, get plenty of rest, and start your day earlier for better life results, both physical and mental.

2

Drink More Water

3

Establish an Exercise Routine and Stick to It

While the old "eight glasses of eight ounces of water" tradition has not been proven beneficial, one thing is certain: many people these days do not get enough water into their bodies. This means eating more water-filled food and drinking water throughout the day. Just listen to your body. When you are thirsty, drink some water.

Exercising just three days a week, for 20 to 30 minutes, can have life-changing results. Exercise has been linked to mental and physical health and well-being. If this means simply taking a walk or a jog, get up and get moving - and do it regularly.

22 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

4

Start Cooking Your Own Meals

5

Establish Keystone Habits

Plenty of research shows that how fit you are mentally and physically is directly related to the types of food you eat. This means less restaurant and "to go" foods and more preparation of healthier meals at home. Since as much as 60% to 70% of your health and wellbeing is tied to nutrition, start cooking more of your own meals, and eat out less often.

Some habits can have a much greater impact than others. They seem innocent enough but can lead to powerful transformations in ways you may not realise. Making your bed each morning doesn't seem like much of a big deal. However, research shows this simple behaviour gets your entire day started in a more productive manner. The same thing happens when you establish exercise, good nutrition or any other simple, daily action as a habit that becomes the key to bigger and better achievements.

Best Foot Forward Get your feet back in order and help protect your spine in the process.

The majority of back pain is caused by soft tissue injury. Muscles, tendons, ligaments and even discs are just different types of tissue that can be injured after a day digging in the garden, a job that involves sitting at a desk for too long or from lifting the shopping out of the car. These tissues can already be at risk of injury from having poor posture.  If we tend to lean or stoop forwards our posterior back muscles tighten to try to pull us upright again. So, when we then ask them to perform another task, they are already fatigued and prone to injury. Or, if we spend all day sitting at a desk, the muscles that flex our hips are being gradually shortened. Due to their attachment along the lumbar spine, when we then stand up - as well as feeling stiff and pulling us forwards they actually compress the spine and add more stress to the discs, ligaments and tendons, again heightening the risk of injury. By improving our posture we can naturally guard against becoming one of the many thousands of people who suffer from lower back pain. This is why people recommend Pilates or yoga, and why osteopaths and physiotherapists advise stretching exercises. One area that is often neglected, however, is our feet. Good foot mechanics and lower leg function will maintain an excellent platform that will push our bodies into a better posture, with improved gait, increased energy and protection for our backs. Here are some simple foot exercises that we can all do and which don’t require any special equipment. Toe walking Walk on your tip-toes for 20-30 seconds several times a day. This will strengthen the tendons and muscles in your feet and calves. It will also gradually relieve the pain in your back.

Toe stretching Yes, toe stretches can have a positive influence on your posture. Sit on the floor or a chair and cross one of your legs over the other, then stretch your toes in all directions. Repeat the process three times per foot every day. Toe pressing Toe pressing is an excellent way of enhancing blood flow to your feet and also helps to improve your posture. Whilst standing upright grip the floor with the toes, try to grip the carpet or hold on to the floorboards. Hold for 3 seconds and repeat 10 times every day. This will strengthen your foot muscles, maintain your arches and help ease the strain on your back.

24 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

Toe pencil grip Stand upright with your knees slightly bent, then try to grab a pencil on the floor with your toes. Hold it for as long as you can, drop, relax for 5 seconds and repeat. Aim for 5 repetitions per foot, 2-3 times per week.  Toe ‘tea towel’ grip Lay a tea towel on the floor in front of a chair. Sit with your feet flat on the towel and then, using your toes only, try to crumple the tea towel up under your feet by bending your toes repeatedly. Once it’s nice and crumpled, flatten it out again and repeat. Ankle circles Lie on the floor or on your bed. Stretch one of your legs up and circle your ankle for 10 seconds anticlockwise and 10 seconds clockwise. Repeat the process with the other ankle, doing both feet 3 times a day, three times a week. This is great for ankle and knee pain too. Heel stretch Sit on the floor with one leg in front of you, putting the other bent under your thigh. Try reaching your toes. Don’t strain your back, so if you can’t reach them loop a belt or a towel around your toes. Pull the belt/towel to stretch into your heel and then try to move your foot in small circles, keeping the heel on the floor. Don’t cause pain, but just ensure that the back of your foot is kept slightly tightened. Repeat the process with your other leg. Once a week is enough for this one. Foot massage Put a tennis ball on the floor, then step on it with the arch of your foot. Roll the ball backwards and forward on the ball whilst squashing the ball into the floor. Keep it up for about 5 minutes for each foot. You can do this whilst at work on and off all day! As well as strengthening your feet these exercises will help with your posture, reduce strain on your back and put a spring in your step . Charles Bruford, Osteopath

A Dog’s

Life

By Colin Armstrong

one of the most common issues we deal with year round are allergies - this is something that is seen much more during the warmer times of the year. Allergies develop when the body’s immune system overreacts to common substances in the environment called allergens. Examples include pollens – from grasses, trees and weeds, dust mites, moulds, insects and certain foods. Allergens enter the body following skin contact, inhalation or ingestion. When an allergic animal is exposed to an allergen it manufactures a specific class of antibodies

skin. It is an inherited condition in dogs with certain breeds being more at risk, particularly terriers, retrievers, boxers and French bulldogs. Clinical signs in dogs usually develop between 1 and 3 years of age, but can occur at any time. Initially affected animals present with signs of itching (scratching, licking, rubbing, pulling out hair) with no obvious sores but with time and repeated self-trauma, lesions will develop.

“Disease may be seasonal, occurring during the summer months when pollen counts are high, or present all year round for animals allergic to house dust mites, storage mites or moulds.” known as IgE's. These antibodies bind to mast cells in the skin, respiratory tract or intestinal tract; following repeated exposure to the allergen, the mast cells become activated and release a variety of unpleasant chemicals which are responsible for the signs of the allergy (i.e. itching, vomiting, diarrhoea or breathing issues). Unfortunately allergic disease is generally multifaceted and doesn’t come with a ‘one size fits all’ cure. As a consequence it can be frustrating for everyone involved.

Eventually some seasonally allergic pets display symptoms throughout the year. Animals suffering from atopic dermatitis often develop secondary skin infections.

Cutaneous adverse food reactions (food allergy). These include food allergy and food intolerance and may cause signs similar to atopic dermatitis or result in gastro-intestinal disease. They can develop at any age, even

when the same diet has been fed for many years. Given the common nature of allergic disease, there has been a lot of recent research into the causes and treatments of it. With the right investigations and management, we can now help these animals live much more relaxed and happier lives.

Here at Hythe Vet Centre we want to deliver the very best in professional veterinary care whilst maintaining a loving, caring and family ethos. After a long search for the right place for our passion, we believe that we have found it, here in Hythe. THeSe InClUDe: • Dedicated parking. • Purpose built surgical theatre, imaging suite and kennels. • Spacious waiting area and large consulting rooms. • X-ray machine with digital processor allowing faster developing times. • An ultrasound scanner similar to those used in human hospitals. • Heated theatre table – to keep your loved ones cosy warm! • Air driven dental machine, not unlike what you would find at your own dentist! • The latest veterinary practice computer system – this will increase the efficiency of the mundane administration side of things. • An oxygen concentrator - this will provide the oxygen that we will use during anaesthetics. Its biggest bonus is that it means that we will not need regular oxygen bottle deliveries, reducing our environmental impact.

Combining 25 years of experience in small animal veterinary practice, Colin, Helen and their team aim to provide a first class service to both you and your beloved pets. We have been awarded Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons General Practice recognition. This is a sought after accreditation that gives you peace of mind that our practice adheres to strict professional standards.

RECIPE Cheese & Onion Bread by John Bingley

INGREDIENTS • 500g strong bread flour  • 10g salt  • 3 tsp dried yeast

METHOD Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl, add the salt and yeast but keep apart (otherwise the salt will kill the yeast). Rub in the olive oil. Pour in half the water and bring together to make a soft, pliable dough, adding more water as required.   Cover and leave in a warm place to rise for 1-2 hours, until doubled in size.   Knock back the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead in the cubed cheese and chopped onion.  Shape the dough into a rounded loaf. Cut slashes across the top and sprinkle over the grated cheese.   Place on an oiled baking sheet and leave to prove for a further hour.  Preheat the oven to 190 degrees. Bake the bread for 35 minutes until browned and cooked through. Cool on a rack before serving.

Get Snap Happy: Hythe’s New Photographic Club

Hythe's newest club, launched in January this year, has a successful past! Formerly it was saltwood Camera Club, which started in 2012. it is now the Hythe District Photographic Club, a move that’s not just geographical but also recognises that many of us are now taking photos on our smartphones or tablets. by Paul Apps UA

The adventure continues well, hello again to all my regular readers and hello to those reading my article for the first time. i thought that on this occasion i would jump back into the subject of painting plein air, as i was recently commissioned to paint the newly placed black fishing huts upon Fisherman's beach. i thought that i would share my fresh thoughts and painting processes with you all as i make this plein air painting come to life.

Having arrived at my chosen location on Hythe's seafront, the first thing I do (and advise all my students to do) is to simply put my equipment on the ground and observe. It is welcomed practice to take time connecting with your location and subject, and to determine the best position to approach it from. These huts are quite a unique topic, as they are so strong in the landscape. Getting the best position was not so easy, though I think I chose well. The painting was started at 5.45 pm, the sun was still warm, though the wind was from the north and strong. I started planning and drawing

around the varied shapes and on into the background shapes of Griggs Fish Shop. So by now time was moving ahead and, being honest, I was slowing up as the cold wind had begun to take effect. My fingers were becoming numb and hard to move. I guess my thoughts too, now slowed. Yet I realised I was a long way from finishing my work. I moved on with the drawing of foreground elements, setting out where the dingy would sit, as well as key pointers along the way such as the sea cabbage and the slide running from the shed down the shingle beach.

compensate for all the changes in the conditions; that would spell a quick end to the painting. Changing or chasing the light is about the worst thing an artist can do: the result will be messy. Essentially stay with the scene as you first discovered it, and if needs be, return to the place on another similar day to complete the work. This would be far better than ending up with a grey mess upon your canvas. By now it was fast approaching 7.10pm, I was cold to the core and realised that I needed more time to complete this work. The foreground lacked the spark of sunshine upon it. I now had a

“I was now using this recall to remember the light as it was when I began to paint. I was not intending to alter other components in order to compensate for all the changes in the conditions; that would spell a quick end to the painting.” with a small stiff round brush and a mix of umber and blue black. I carefully observed the roof angles and overall composition that the painting would take moving forward. Once I was satisfied with the composition, I moved to block in the deep apparent darks of the sheds, alternating from warm hues to cool ones as the facets of the sheds differed from the sun to shade. Once done, I turned my attention to the lovely blue sky, not by any means merely one blue hue. I used cobalt, lemon yellow and titanium white to create my mixes for the sky, working

It was cold now and becoming increasingly uncomfortable to work. The light had all but disappeared behind larger buildings, leaving a flat scene in front. Any brush marks I made needed light in them, so my memory for what had been become essential. Artists have to look long and hard at their subjects, though in doing so we develop a sense of memory that, as scenes change or light alters, we can draw upon to carry us through. It is a form of photo recall, and invaluable.  I was now using this recall to remember the light as it was when I began to paint. I was not intending to alter other components in order to

choice: come back another day, or use reference I'd obtained back at the studio to complete the work. I favour a revisit; though I'll see how I feel about the work when I am refreshed, warm again and having had a good sleep. So now the summer is fast approaching, its time to gather your equipment, dust it down and get out and paint plein air. Summer Gardening summer is upon us and the garden should be now thriving in the warmth this brings. the harsh winter and very weak spring warmth has had an impact on our garden here in Kent. But plants have a remarkable way of ‘catching up ‘ and keeping normal nature timings roughly about right. Although we have had a relatively wet first half of the year, as we know in our little micro climate things can very rapidly dry up. we have a rich abundance of soil types in our local area and you will find heavy clay soils very close to sandy environments.

So Summer is a time to get out and enjoy the garden, reap the rewards for all your hard spring work and sit back with a nice glass of something and relax….. But wait right there! Our poor old plants are now drying out. As it gets hotter out there, your plants need a lot

Weed, Weed, Weed Your plants are thriving, but so are the weeds at this time of year. With so much growth, you may not even notice a few unwanted plants. Leaving them just means they flower, go to seed and spread. Do  your weeding chores

“Many plants do very well in full sun which is ideal in our little corner, but some do prefer it slightly cooler” more water. The trick is to water them regularly and not to wait until they start to show wilting in the leaves. Once they start to droop, they are already suffering and can be stunted for future growth for the rest of the season. Water daily if you can, unless of course it has just rained and it’s not necessary. When the weather is dry, do it daily. A heavy layer of porous mulch, like straw or wood shavings can make a huge difference in keeping your soil moist.

frequently and do the work in the morning or evening when it’s cooler. Fortunately, that layer of mulch we just mentioned for water can help with weeds too. Many plants do very well in full sun which is ideal in our little corner, but some do prefer it slightly cooler. If you are having a hot spell, add a little shade over your more delicate plants. A sheet of lattice, a well-placed umbrella or even some lawn ornaments can be enough to block

out the sun for your shade-loving plants.  Lets get some positives in here. With drier weather the lawns will become very slow growing and usually you manage to put this job to one side for a month or so. Fertilising lawns is not ideal in the hot summer months so hold off on this until late summer, early autumn. There is very little pruning required in these months and most of your colourful displays will be more than happy with just a top up of drink. So if you feel inclined to pursue some summer gardening jobs I have a list for you below. Otherwise warm up the BBQ, relax and simply enjoy your garden.

1. Water, Water, Water….. Obvious, but do consider paying a little more attention to the pots and hanging baskets at this time of year. 2. Dead head flowering annuals and perennials, this will keep many of them thriving with plenty of colour for the whole season. 3. If you’re a vegetable lover, keep an eye on your tomatoes, pinching out and removing leaves to encourage fruit.  4. Lilies and other early summering flowering perennials can be divided now and potted up for future planting. By Mark Whyte

Hayne House, a Kent wedding venue, launches a brand new, purpose-built elegant glasshouse -

The Orangery

for couples looking to begin their journey together in style

On Saturday 21st April 2018, Hayne House Saltwood launches a brand-new Orangery -  a purpose-built glasshouse for couples who want an indoor wedding venue that embraces the outdoors. The exciting journey from marquee to exclusive orangery Fleur Record-Smith, the Founder said, “With over 30 years combined experience of hosting weddings and events, when the wedding coordinators and I set about designing the Orangery, we wanted to create a unique and beautiful wedding venue; a quality, stunning building giving couples the perfect backdrop to their wedding ceremony and reception, with a real connection to nature and the gardens that is light, airy, eradicates their worries or concerns, and transforms seamlessly from day into the perfect evening party venue.” Fleur continued, “So we put our heads together to review and record couples’ concerns that they had shared about other venues or weddings they had attended. During the design stage we systematically addressed these issues in the knowledge that when a couple finally selects their wedding venue, it is undoubtedly one of the biggest decisions they will make, as it can influence the rest of their day”. The team at Hayne House has ensured that they tackled the over-riding issues. These included, in priority order, ensuring that everything is all under one roof within The Orangery - the indoor ceremony area, the wedding breakfast room, large dance floor, built-

in bar and the toilets. In addition, the space is large enough not only to accommodate an average sized wedding of around 80 day guests, but that it can also comfortably seat up to 120 day guests for the ceremony and wedding reception. There is a large well stocked beautiful bar which is adjacent to a large dance floor. With more couples choosing to have their wedding ceremony at their wedding reception venue, there is now a beautiful wet weather indoor contingency for the ceremony. This enables couples to enjoy the natural outdoor feel for the wedding of their dreams, whilst embracing the unpredictable British weather. A beautiful, elegant well-considered romantic building, inside and out The team at Hayne House have ensured that the freestanding Orangery gives couples that real WOW factor.  The orangery provides couples with a comfortable, contemporary space all year round, as the team at Hayne House believe that romance is never out of season! With its floor to ceiling windows that wrap around the building it is an inviting space with an abundance of natural light.  With panoramic view of the outdoors, making the most of the surrounding gardens is effortless and gives the sense that everyone is enjoying the wedding day seated outside, when in truth, they are inside, sheltered from the weather.

Purpose built for everything a wedding couple may need The orangery works equally well with majestic long dining tables, or with an intimate scattering of informal round tables.  With its internal, bifolding doors it enables you to have two rooms, or one large one, giving couples the opportunity to offer their guests different experiences throughout the day.  With the fading of the day’s natural light and the introduction of warm lighting, the building provides a seamless transition from the wedding day into the evening party. And after sunset, it enables all the guests to dance under the twinkling night sky! Hayne House and the new Orangery are set within an idyllic, private setting of 30 acres of mature, private landscaped gardens.  Couples can also marry outside, under the shelter of a purpose-built porch, followed by canapes and drinks served out on the manicured lawns.  In the former hunting lodge, there is a beautiful hall, dining room and sitting room (all with open fireplaces), bridal changing facilities, a complimentary bridal suite plus four additional bedrooms. Fully licensed for Civil Ceremonies, Hayne House now offers you a wedding venue designed solely with your wedding needs in mind.   With their reputation for superb, friendly service and excellent award-winning food supplied by www.touchays.com, we recommend that this charming, family run venue with lovely grounds has to be on your list to visit - so book a show around and become a leading role in their new love story, in the Orangery in Kent, the Garden of England!

3 Months, 3800 miles

2 Ordinary Men, 1 Extraordinary Challange Following in the footsteps of Christopher Columbus, two local family men, the Atlantic Avengers, Ricky Reina and John wilson will tackle the Columbus Route to raise money for three charities; Clic sargent, shepway sports trust and the opera youth Foundation. tRicky and John took the boat to Saltwood School for the day, and the pupils learned all about the challenge and raised some money to supoport them by dressing as Superheroes. In 1493 Christopher Columbus sailed from Cadiz on his second voyage to Antigua, with 17 ships and 1200 men. The Atlantic Avengers, are following this route leaving on 17th November

So Why are they doing it? “We are trying to achieve something amazing and to make a real difference in the lives of young people less fortunate than ourselves. We are challenging ourselves in a way that is far greater than ever before, rowing across the world’s second largest ocean”. Ricky Reina. “Obviously to achieve something so challenging

““We are trying to achieve something amazing and to make a real difference in the lives of young people less fortunate than ourselves.” 2018, but in one rowing boat, rowing 3800 nautical miles, 3 months at sea, just 2 ordinary men, taking on 1 extraordinary challenge, a World First. No 2-man craft has ever rowed this route, a 4-man craft took 123 days, Ricky and John want to beat that!

and to raise such a large target we need the support and generosity of so many people. Our chosen charities are very deserving and already making a huge difference in the lives of people they work with”. John Wilson Why not give a little, become an Atlantic Avenger and have some fun along the way? HL Sports welcome to the summer edition of Hythe life sports. in this jam packed issue we report on a dramatic end to Hythe FC’s 2017/2018 campaign, report on how our local cricket clubs have started the new season and hear about Hythe Cycling Club who are following in the footsteps of our Hythe cycling ancestors!

FOOTBALL

Last minute heartbreak for The Cannons It all came down to the last game of the season for the Cannons. After an extraordinary run under new manager Sam Denly, Hythe started the day in 6th position. Opponents Corinthian Casuals were also chasing the play offs but a win for the Cannons would have seen them secure a play off spot and a chance of promotion.  When Zak Ansah buried the ball into the corner of the net in the 80th minute the crowd went wild. Almost simultaneously news reached the ground that Ashford had equalised against the other play off chasing team Walton Casuals. However it wasn’t to be and in almost the last seconds of injury time Corinthians scored an equaliser. The final whistle blew and with Walton beating Ashford the Cannons finished 7th on goal difference.  A dramatic and heart breaking end to an amazing season.  Despite the disappointment Hythe can hold their heads up high. At the time of our last edition manager Clive Cook had left the club and the team were 10 points adrift of the play offs. Since then new manager Sam Denly has completely turned the club around bringing in a host of exciting young players.  The stand out player has been former Arsenal youth player and Ghanaian U20 international Zak Ansah. His goal against Corinthians saw him break Brendan Cass’ record from 2010/11 of scoring in consecutive games. Going into the game he had equalled the record by scoring in 9 consecutive games and his well taken goal gave him 10 in 10. He scored an amazing 18 goals in Hythe’s last 14 games of the season and was instrumental in their 14 game unbeaten run that led them to the brink of the play offs. In total Ansah scored 20 goals since joining the club in January and it is exciting to think how many he could score in a full season. Cannons supporters are holding their collective breath waiting to hear if he will be a Cannons player next season and we hope to be able to confirm this in our next issue. If the bulk of this exciting team can be kept together Hythe surely must be favourites for the Championship next season.  Chris Kinnear, Kieron Campbell, Connor Sanders, Mitchell Dickenson and Charlie Webster have already committed for another year and others are sure to follow. Sadly club captain Ryan Johnson has decided to move on and whilst this is a blow to the club the core of this exciting squad remains.

HL Sports CRICKET

Hythe CC First XI Captain Chris Slee reports on a solid start to the new season – “The 2018 season is underway but the weather has been variable, to say the least. As usual the football season has overlapped with cricket in April and May. The first team have amassed 9 points from two games. The second team have 15 points from three games in the Kent League. Tim Pichowski is averaging 78 runs for the Ist XI and the 2nd XI overseas player Ben Davies is averaging 211. Although the bowlers are yet to find their form there is a fantastic atmosphere at the club leading into the new season. Our Sunday side is unbeaten and contains five qualified coaches which makes it an attractive side for youngsters to come and play in. Currently, 5 youngsters are playing every week and are successfully making the transition from junior to senior cricket. Byron Stevens , in particular, has made a useful contribution with the bat. After the East Kent League folding at the end of last season everybody is enjoying the first year of friendly cricket on a Sunday.

Saltwood CC Club Chairman Ian Oakes reports on the Wood’s winning start “After promotions in 2017 for the Saturday and Sunday teams, everyone was looking forward to making an impression against tougher opposition. It wasn’t the start we were looking for, with 4 cancelled matches due to opposition pulling out and the torrential rain.  With no pre-season matches as warm ups, SCC went into their first match against Ash CC in the Regional League Championship East Division. First game and the first win for SCC, with a great debut for Harry Stafford, economical bowling from returning overseas player Joey Pratt and an impressive batting display from Jamie Keeler. The second match was a high scoring affair with a close finish. Saltwood scored 244-3, with Jamie Keeler (120*) and Tom Carr (57) providing the backbone of the innings. The opposition, Westgate On Sea, fought back with their middle order batsmen all scoring 50s, but ultimately falling just 9 runs short of victory.”

A re-laid wicket, covers, new roller and scoreboard have shown the commitment of the club to playing cricket in the 165th year of its existence. In addition, the bar facilities and club house are second to none. It is pleasing that many opposition sides take the opportunity to make full use of them after the game and we thank all those that have donated towards the fundraising efforts during the off season.

The club’s junior section is thriving once again, with just under 90 children learning to play and really enjoying their cricket. Training sessions take place at the ground on Tanners Hill on Mondays from 4pm with girls and boys in Year R upwards and of all abilities from absolute beginner to advanced. For more information, please visit

Our sponsor, the Vinodhon Tandoori Restaurant, has continued with sponsorship this year. Hythe cricket club is pleased that they have supported us through the last average year on the field. This year, with the help of travelling expenses from Bala and Ala Uddin of the Vinodhon we hope to get back to winning ways. The Colts section is still flourishing and, with three overseas players coaching, are making great strides. The colts’ session  runs from 10am to 12 on a Sunday morning. Rachel Gainsford is running a canteen where parents can get a cup of tea and a snack while watching their children train.  Hence, we are glad the season has begun and are looking forward to reporting to Hythe Life, later in the year, that we have had a successful season. Newcomers only have to pop in on a match day to receive a warm welcome. If you and interested in getting involved in any of the sports we offer feel free to get in touch.”

HL Sports CYCLING

Hythe Cycling Club Club Chairman Richard Foster tells us about Hythe’s newest cycling club.  “Hythe Cycling Club was founded in 2015 and is affiliated to British Cycling, which is the national governing body for cycling in the UK. The Club has around 70 members and rides every Sunday morning from the Hythe & Saltwood Sailing Club, which is on the seafront in Hythe. We cycle in organised groups through the towns, villages and beautiful countryside of Kent and East Sussex. As well as the regular Sunday Rides, our members engage in Charity Rides, Competitive Time Trials, Sportives, Road Racing and Track rides.     Most members just enjoy meeting friends for a bike ride, a bit of strenuous exercise and for a chat with coffee and cake after the ride. The Club offers a range of groups to cycle with based on rider’s ability and aspirations. Group sizes are kept to around 10 riders with each group being led by a Ride Captain.
