Everest:

The Deadliest of Days by Alanna Fraser, Photographs by Alun Richardson

A team of Gurkha soldiers, led by Major Andrew Todd, who lives in Seabrook, were attempting to scale Everest when the catastrophic Nepal earthquake struck last year. Major Todd won the Sun newspaper’s Millie award for Most Outstanding Soldier, and was recently awarded an MBE in the Queen’s 90th Birthday Honours’ List, for his courageous actions in coordinating the evacuation of those trapped on the mountain. Had Major Andrew Todd and his team of Gurkha climbers not caught the first lift from Everest base camp up the mountain on April 25th 2015, they would almost certainly have died along with the Had an ice fall – the size of two houses – not missed them by inches, they would have perished in an avalanche triggered by the earthquake. And had the soldiers not been on Everest that day, the outcome for 116 of their fellow climbers – whose lives their courageous actions helped to save – may well have been very different. The climb was meant to be a celebratory event, marking an important milestone in the Gurkhas’ history. As Major Todd explains, “A Gurkha had never been on top of the world and that was what we wanted to do: to put the first serving Gurkha on the summit of Everest, in their homeland of Nepal. As 2015 was the 200th anniversary of Gurkha service in the British Army, it felt like a good way to celebrate that record with a new achievement.” Thus, the Gurkha 200 (G200) expedition

was born.“We arrived in Nepal on 1st April. We spent three weeks at base camp just rehearsing, particularly for the most technical and dangerous parts of the ascent. A Chinese team wedged itself into the camp next to us: tragically, they were all killed by the avalanche. That still upsets me now.” All climbers are obsessive weather-watchers, and when their analysis indicated that the weather window was right for them, they decided to begin their climb. Little did they realise at the time that this was to be a life-saving decision. “We could see that the jet stream was moving and our team was in really good order so we thought, ‘This is our moment’. But we nearly delayed and didn’t go that day. If we hadn’t moved at the time of the earthquake, we would all have been in our tents. When we went back afterwards, there were rocks the size of fridges on top of our tents; we would have been killed instantly.” Survivors later likened the scene to that of the devastation wrought by a nuclear bomb. As the Gurkha team began its ascent, the mountain issued its first, chilling warning when a massive ice fall narrowly avoided them. An experienced climber himself, Major Todd was immediately unsettled. “I knew it wasn’t right that the ice fall happened. At that time in the morning,

it was still so cold that you wouldn’t expect to get those kinds of movements. The blocks of ice were about the size of two houses. I don’t know how we weren’t underneath it. We were just incredibly lucky, but I also think we were meant to be there to help the other people.” The team arrived safely at Camp 1, some 6500m above sea level, and, with the summit an achievable 2500m away, still firmly believed that they would succeed in their mission. “We’d had a really good day. We’d cracked the first part of the climb and for the first time we thought, ‘We’ve got this. We all felt so strong and then... chaos.” It was whilst the team were in their tents at Camp 1 that nature unleashed its deadly force upon Nepal in the form of a powerful earthquake, killing over 8,000 and devastating many of the towns and villages caught in its wake. On Everest, the result was a terrifying ice avalanche. “The glacier just suddenly fell down and moved sideways while it was still falling. The noise was just incredible. It was a huge explosion, like a bomb in Afghanistan going on and on for about a minute. I put my hand out of my tent and was hit by a blast wave, which was the ice avalanche coming up the mountain from Base Camp, and then I couldn’t see anything. There was avalanche debris everywhere. It took us a while to realise that it must have been an earthquake. Continued on page 10…

AFTER

It was just chaos, I couldn’t hear anything on the radio and I tried to ring Kathmandu but the lines were down. We still had some of the team further down the mountain and thought they must be dead. There was no way anyone could survive that.” There was relief all round, however, when the other G200 climbers managed to make contact, informing Major Todd that, miraculously, they had all survived, despite ice from the avalanche falling all around them. Despite their ordeal, the soldiers immediately sought to assist with the rescue effort. “We gave them orders to go back down to help with the casualty evacuation, as by this time, we were getting reports of the casualties and deaths,” said Major Todd. The team’s luck did not end there: their Base Camp manager, Captain Buddhi, presumed dead, had also survived. “He dragged a number of the Sherpas to safety behind rocks. It was unbelievably quick thinking. He then got picked up by the avalanche and thrown into a hollow. He had twenty stitches to his head, but he was alive.” Major Todd and the other G200 soldiers, along with 116 others, were still stranded on the mountain though. The route they had taken to Camp 1 – already a perilous climb – had been destroyed, and they had to endure a terrifying three days at the notoriously dangerous site, facing dwindling fuel supplies and alarming aftershocks from the earthquake, before managing to make their way back down. “No one could get up to us and we couldn’t get down. The helicopters were needed further down to deal with real casualties.” “I just thought, ‘Right, we’ve got a job to do here. We’ve got to get ourselves and everyone else off this mountain. It was all hands to the pump. As a soldier, you’ve been trained your

whole life to protect your mission and your men first and yourself last. I wasn’t thinking about myself, I was only worried about whether the blokes were OK. Being in the Army, your tolerance of fear is much higher and you know your coping strategies for dealing with it. That also helped.” The Gurkha team was able to draw upon all of its experience to secure the safe evacuation of the climbers trapped on Everest. “We all speak Nepali, so we could communicate with the helicopter pilots, and we had links to the aviation guys in Kathmandu. It was a Gurkhacontrolled extraction. I had to take the climbers over the open glacier to the helicopter landing site, and that was terrifying: it was completely

“I just thought, ‘Right, we’ve got a job to do here. We’ve got to get ourselves and everyone else off this mountain.’” broken up with avalanche debris everywhere. Inside, I was thinking ‘This is terrible; I don’t even know if we’re going to get down ‘but on the outside, I was saying to them, ‘It’s going to be fine, don’t worry.’ Major Todd is quick to acknowledge that the rescue was, quite literally, a team effort, with all the G200 soldiers playing a part. In a five-hour period, they managed to secure the safe extraction of 116 climbers as well as the Sherpas and their kit (to avoid leaving a detrimental environmental impact). But their efforts did not end there: the team then proceeded to Base Camp to assist with the clear-up, which included the removal of bodies. Despite being the last to leave, the Gurkhas then moved on foot towards rural villages to offer their assistance. Given that three of the team had had their own houses

flattened in the earthquake, this was an extraordinary act of altruism on the part of the Nepalese soldiers, earning a number of them Army commendations for bravery. But it was Major Todd’s exemplary leadership that caught the attention of Millie awards, following an anonymous nomination for ‘Outstanding Soldier of the Year’ by a member of the public. Initially reluctant to be singled out for his own actions, Major Todd’s climbing team convinced him to accept the nomination.“I felt a bit of a fraud; it was a team effort”, he explains. Major Todd was able to take some of his team to the ceremony: a star-studded affair with guests including Rod Stewart and Boris Johnson. The Outstanding Soldier award was presented

The G200 team

by renowned adventurer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, one of Major Todd’s boyhood heroes. Fiennes, dubbed ‘the greatest living explorer’ by the Guinness Book of Records, was unstinting in his praise for the G200 team, telling Major Todd as he presented him with the award that,“What you and your men did on Mount Everest was incredible and in the great tradition of bravery, gallantry and service.” Major Todd presented the trophy to the Sergeant’s Mess at Shornecliffe, and remains modest about his achievements, admitting that, “The greatest gift we were given was our lives. We got to go back: there were other people who will never have that chance.” But thanks to the G200 team’s courageous efforts, 116 climbers and Sherpas did get to go back. In the words of the Gurkha motto, ‘better to die than to live a coward.’

Her music teacher was a guitar enthusiast and it was his passion for acoustics that captured her interest in playing an instrument. Natasha quickly found that playing the guitar was something that not only came naturally to her, but that she really enjoyed it and her ability advanced quickly. Moving through her teenage years, F@HMHMF BNMƼCDMBD @MC RJHKK LD@MS SG@S AX RGD V@R QD@CX SN take on the world of live performance. Instead of taking the easier route of creating a playlist of cover music, she decided to put pen to paper and started songwriting. When the teachers at Natasha’s school became aware of her newfound writing skills, they were quick to get these skills in front of the right people and encouraged her to enter The Big Music Project, a Lottery funded national singer/songwriter competition, with regional entrants. Along with the school’s music technician, Natasha recorded and submitted some of her songs and they were all thrilled to discover that she had won the regional selection and was through to the London auditions. Performing in London, without the psychological security of the school behind her, gave Natasha a VD@KSG NE BNMƼCDMBD HM GDQ @AHKHSHDR KSGNTFG GDQ INTQMDX HM SGD competition ended here, the judging panel (of which one was the music scout that discovered Coldplay) were so impressed with her talents that they advised her to continue songwriting for television. Most of the other entrants were from music universities around the country, so perhaps a little more seasoned at public performance. She has also achieved the accolade of winning the Singer Songwriter Competition in Canterbury which gave her the enviable prize of a day in the recording studio to produce a CD. Natasha has since used her musical talents to work in several projects, one of which was with Instep Dance and the Lila Dance Company. They worked with Natasha on one of their recent projects by inviting her to provide the acoustics to their performances, both instrumentally and vocally, giving her yet more recording studio experience. Natasha’s long term goals are to try and incorporate music with other skills and she is hoping to study at Reading University to become a primary school teacher with the aim of specialising in using music to aid learning. For now, you will be able to see Natasha performing at events in and around Hythe as she regularly performs at charity events, most recently a fundraiser for Parkinson's disease at the Hythe Pavilion. She enjoys performing live on a voluntary basis as for her, it keeps it fun. Not having the pressure of earning an income from her music seems to be Natasha’s way of keeping her passion for music alive, so we’ll look forward to seeing her perform at her next charity event! You never know, we may also see her on TV if the judges were right‌ Natasha says: “I love the atmosphere of performing locally and JMNVHMF SG@S XNT @QD @S @M DUDMS SG@S HR FNHMF SN ADMDĆĽS XNTQ town.â€?

Found Your Groove? If you’re into your music then the resurgence of record players and vinyl records won’t have passed you by. For those of you over 40 you will always have been aware of records and probably at some stage in your life amassed a carefully chosen collection of LPs from all of your favourite artists. Many music lovers have never stopped listening to their records – others are rediscovering the wonderful warm sound of vinyl, and the younger generation are being captivated by its simplicity of form. Speaking to people from all of these categories, they have one thing in common – their appreciation of the amazing sound vinyl gives over and above any other format. The key to getting the best from your records is, of course, owning a nice turntable. These do not have to cost a fortune, but as with any quality product, from shoes to cars, you get what you pay for. Everyone has a different interpretation of what good sound is and everyone has their own style. There are a few companies making wonderful stylish new turntables, but it’s fair to say that Pro-Ject, who are based in Austria, have cornered the market in terms of sound and style.

The company is owned by Heinz Lichtenegge who himself is a real audiophile. His passion for music started when he was a teenager and continues today. This passion translated into developing his own hand-crafted turntables and building up a business to bring these gorgeous stylish pieces to other music lovers. His mission is simply to produce the best sounding turntables and analogue components at the most competitive prices possible. Not only do the turntables sound great but they are designed beautifully, and hand-built in the dedicated Pro-Ject factory. All of this attention to detail and expertise has led to ProJect being widely recognised as one of the finest turntable manufacturers in the world. With awards such as Best Product 20162017 from the European Sound and Imaging Association for their newly launched Classic Turntable, and 5 star reviews from many trusted Hi-Fi magazines for products across their range, Pro-Ject offers stunning reliable equipment that would fit anyone’s budget. From the budget Elemental at £159, to the award-winning Essential II (£209) and stunning

RPM1 Carbon (£325); all the way up to the faultless Signature 12 record player (£7000) – Pro-Ject is a must-see brand for anyone interested in good quality hi-fi. If you enjoy your music there is no better time to get the records out and reinvest in your equipment. With most current artists releasing their LPs on vinyl and heavy weight re-presses of artists from the 60s onwards available in most good independent record shops, you’ll be dancing around the living room before you know it!

The Sinking of HMS Barham by Alanna Fraser

LLeft: George as a young seaman in 1941 Far F left: George (second left) enjoying a break e from duties with f his shipmates.

On 25th November 1941, the British battleship, HMS Barham, which had already seen service at the Battle of Jutland, became the only battleship to be sunk at sea by a German submarine during World War II. Only 337 of the ship's company of 1275 crewmen survived. One of the survivors was boy seaman, George Knott, who was just 17 at the time. Here, the 92-year old Hythe resident recounts his lucky escape. “I joined the Navy in early 1939 at the age of 15, before war broke out. If I hadn't joined up, I would probably soon have ended up in prison, because I was a naughty boy! Following my training, I joined HMS Barham as a Boy Seaman Class II (the lowest of the low!) in August 1941. In late November 1941, the Eastern Mediterranean Fleet, comprising the

was located several decks below the waterline and to obtain entry, one had to open and close several watertight doors below decks. If the boat was torpedoed whilst you were down there, there was no escape. At 1615, my crew was relieved of our duties to go to the mess deck for a cup of tea and a sticky bun. We were due to return at 1630. The torpedoes struck at 1625 when I was just finishing my tea. A German submarine had managed to penetrate the destroyer screen surrounding the three ships without detection. The ship immediately began to list to port. No one seemed to know what had happened. All

“Every November, those of us who are left attend a memorial service at Westminster Abbey to remember our lost colleagues, although sadly there are only a handful of us now.” battleships HMS Queen Elizabeth, HMS Barham and HMS Valiant, accompanied by cruisers and destroyers, set sail from the Egyptian port of Alexandria to support the army in its North African desert push westwards. During the morning of 25th November, an enemy aircraft began to shadow the fleet but it remained out of range of the fleet’s anti-aircraft guns. Unfortunately, the RAF was not in a position to provide adequate cover for us: the only ‘air’ support we had was our inflated life belts! The three battleships proceeded in line: the flagship Queen Elizabeth at the front, followed by the Barham, with the Valiant at the rearguard. At 1610 hours I was at my defence station,, which was the transmitting station. The station

of us on the mess deck immediately made for the gangway leading to the upper deck. I arrived on the upper deck and found it difficult to negotiate the sloping deck. I decided to start sliding down the side of the ship, taking all the skin off my back as I scraped along the barnacles clinging to the vessel. As I made my way down, there was a gigantic explosion which blew me into the sea. My next recollection was of being dragged under. Eventually I surfaced, only to take a deep breath before being sucked down again. I started to swallow seawater and oil. Surfacing for the second time, I too another deep breath and was pulled under again by the undertow caused by the sinking ship. As I was sucked

under for the third time I recall saying that this would be the end. However, I bobbed up like a cork, thanks to my lifebelt. I was unable to see anything because of the engulfing black smoke so I just lay back in the water and eventually the smoke cleared. A considerable amount of debris was floating on the surface and I could see heads bobbing about. The cries of the wounded were awful. Someone somewhere struck up the hymn ‘Nearer my God to Thee’, which gave great comfort. Subsequently I learned that the Mediterranean has a quota of man-eating sharks: perhaps the hymn had kept them away? Eventually, two destroyers returned, tasked with picking up survivors. I made for the nearer one and scrambled aboard. I estimated that I had been in the water for two hours but did not feel cold. A few days later, the Admiral addressed those of us who were not disabled, telling us that on arrival at our destination of Alexandria and in our letters home we were neither to discuss nor to relate our experiences – essentially for security and morale reasons. Our next of kin were finally informed of our survival in February 1942. Over 800 of our fellow seamen had lost their lives that day and, had I not been on my tea break, I would certainly have been one of them. Every November, those of us who are left attend a memorial service at Westminster Abbey to remember our lost colleagues, although sadly there are only a handful of us now.”

Hythe Watch News from Hythe Town Council Sixth Edition

Councillor’s Corner Keith Miles Pat and I moved here from Rainham in Oct 2013, so I am a relative “Newbie” to Hythe. I was encouraged by friends to consider standing for election and following the totally new experience of canvassing, was really pleased and privileged to be elected as a Hythe Town Councillor for West Ward, in May 2015. I am fully engaged in Council matters, sit on several committees and indeed have just assumed the position of chairman of Plans & Works for this year. Planning rules can be quite complex and thankfully there are several members of the committee who have a wealth of experience in planning matters, at both local and district council, to assist in considering the many and sometimes contentious planning applications. I find it especially pleasing as a councillor to be able to address specific concerns of local residents and achieve resolution to matters that have frustrated them as individuals for some time. These include: clearing pathways of brambles and nettles to allow free pedestrian access adjacent to Palmarsh school; addressing concerns about bus shelters (ongoing) and ensuring equitable charges raised for ground maintenance works. As a military man, and vice chairman of the local branch of the Royal British Legion, it is extremely pleasing to live in a community that holds the armed forces in high esteem, as evidenced by the support shown for the Armed Forces day and Remembrance day parades and magnificent financial support for the Poppy appeal. I am proud to take part in those parades, wearing my councillor gown and representing my ward. It is a real pleasure to help promote Hythe both as a tourist destination and fun place to live. I am a member of the Hythe Festival committee and organised the last two Royal Military Canal Grand Concerts in 2014 and 2016. Both the Royal British Legion and Rotary are dear to my heart and I serve on committees of both organisations. A recent visit to Demelza children's hospice in Sittingbourne, which serves all of Kent, was most enlightening and demonstrated the need for their £11m annual appeal. Rotary are working hard to raise funds in support of that and other charities. So don't be surprised if you see me in the High Street, wearing a daffodil hat, holding a bucket and seeking your donations! Councillor Keith Miles

Message from the Mayor I was honoured to have been re-elected as town mayor for the civic year 2015/2016. It is a fantastic privilege to serve Hythe. When I meet dignitaries from other towns I can’t help but say what a wonderful place it is. We have a glorious beach, the canal, some first-class shops, our magnificent church and the RH&D railway. We even have the best pubs in Kent. What more could a mayor wish for? Perhaps I shouldn’t praise the town too much, in case they all decide to up sticks and move here! I chose “community” as my mayoral Town Mayor Michael Lyons joined in theme this year. As town mayor, I am with the Teddy Bears picnic during privileged to meet people from lots of this year’s Hythe Festival different organisations, from different ethnic, religious and educational backgrounds and of all ages. It strikes me we have much more in common than differences. We have already invited Johnny Hobbs, Hythe’s youth ambassador to visit the town council offices to advise us on how we can make a better connection with the town’s youth and young adults. I will continue to join up different groups and encourage people to work together where possible. As a head Cinque Port, Hythe works closely with Lord Michael Boyce, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. It was a sad day when l learnt that Lord Boyce’s wife, Lady Fleur Boyce passed away in early June. She was a great supporter of the town, and visited us many times. Former town clerk of Hythe Mrs Judith McCormick passed away in July. Judith had been town clerk in Hythe for 16 years and was instrumental in getting funding for many projects including our super sports pavilion at South Road. Following the atrocity in Nice, I wrote to my French twin-town counterpart, the mayor of Berck-sur-Mer and to the French ambassador to express our solidarity. I was delighted to attend the Hythe Festival again this year. Congratulations to the organising committee who do such a tremendous job in making so many events happen throughout the town. As the final weekend coincided with Armed Forces Day and Civic Sunday along with some splendid weather, your councillors and I were able to witness the finale of a terrific fortnight. Well done Hythe Festival organising committee – you prove just what can be done for the community.

Hythe Festival The Hythe Festival Committee ran a huge selection of events across all of Hythe’s open spaces in July. With music, drama, art and canal entertainment, there really was something for everyone. One of our favourite events was the famous Hythe Teddy Bears’ Picnic in Oaklands park. More than 300 children from Hythe Bay nursery, Hythe Bay reception class, Stepping Stones nursery and Little Cubs – and plenty of parents, teachers and helpers enjoyed the free event with singing, magic and story-telling. The committee did an amazing job, which Hythe Town Council is delighted to support.

Mackeson square Water project at Longbridge

Representatives from the town council, Hythe Civic Society, Sainsbury’s and Stephen Bailey Landscaping met up for the official opening of Mackeson Square in June of this year.

Pictures: A real team effort. Financed by Kent County Councillor Martin Whybrow, base installed by Shaun Santer, tank put in place by local residents and allotment holders, project managed by Councillor Paul O’Connor

How frustrating it can be when you’re doing your bit to grow low-cost, good quality food and keep food miles down, when lack of rainfall means your crops don’t thrive. If you’re an allotment holder at Hythe’s Longbridge site, how pleased you’ll be to know that a brand new 7,000 litre reservoir container has just been installed. Designed to harvest rain water through a specially designed canopy system, the reservoir has been mounted high enough so that gravity is all that’s needed to feed the water to

allotmenteers’ watering cans. The system was paid for out of Kent County Councillor Martin Whybrow’s member’s grant, and project managed by Hythe Town Councillor Paul O’Connor. It was installed by local contractor Shaun Santer with the help of allotment holders, and the tank was supplied by ecosure.co.uk. If you’d like an allotment, we can usually find a vacancy on one of Hythe Town Council’s four allotment sites. Please email admin@Hythe-kent.com for more details.

Chris Capon’s bench at Mackeson Square. A place to watch the world go by.

It wasn’t long ago when Mackeson Square looked a little tired, a little weed-infested, a little in need of attention. Many residents will remember the late Chris Capon sitting there, chatting with his friends about the state of the world. What would he say now about the smart new square where his commemorative bench now has pride of place? Property developers are often required to provide “section 106” funds to help build infrastructure projects, and section 106 money from the new Sainsbury’s provided the funding for the design, landscaping and planting for the square. Hythe Civic Society provided the ideas and impetus behind the scheme, while local company Stephen Bailey Landscaping did much of the work. The result is a bright, easily accessible facility that is already proving very popular with residents. Congratulations to everyone who made the project happen – particularly the inspirational Sally Chesters, who had the original idea and proposed it to Shepway District Council.

Civic pride While some might think tradition has no place, our representative democracy has been developing for hundreds of years, and Hythe’s mayor making ceremony is a great example. Every four years, electors in Hythe vote to choose their councillors, and every year, councillors vote to decide who will be town mayor. The town mayor acts as chairman of the council and represents the town to other towns and organisations. Councillor Michael Lyons was re-elected for a second term at the mayor making in May, and appointed Councillor Ann Mayne as his mayoress. On a more sombre note, the town commerated the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 2016. Many families in Hythe lost sons, brothers and fathers at this terrible battle.

Hythe Watch News from Hythe Town Council Sixth Edition

Dementia friendly Passing of the speakership community It’s not only Hythe that’s working to become a dementia friendly community. Sandwich near Dover has a similar population profile to Hythe, that is; slightly older than the national population profile. Realising that people with dementia need understanding and support from the community, the town council there have got together with AgeUK and created a Dementia Friendly Alliance. While Hythe has been working closely with local supermarkets Waitrose and Sainsbury’s, Sandwich has found support from their Co-op. These companies are certainly behaving in a fair and open-minded fashion, but they are also profit-driven. They know that by providing information to their staff on the challenges of dementia, they can help people to spend money in their stores. If shops, traders and charities in Hythe want to take advantage of a free one-hour information session or to tell us what you think about how we can help people with dementia, then contact AgeUK or Hythe Town Council on admin@hythe-kent.com. Together we can help to make Hythe a dementia friendly town.

Hythe Town Council is determined to make Hythe a dementia friendly community

Every year, the speakership of the Confederation of the Cinque Ports passes to one of the seven head ports. Last year it was Hythe, this year it is Dover’s turn. At a splendid ceremony in Dover’s town council chamber on 21st May, the chain of office was passed to Neil Rix, town mayor of Dover for his safekeeping. The confederation is not just about ceremony. It has a very important role in educating people about the origins of the Royal Navy, and in promoting tourism to its member towns. This year, the confederation has produced a new leaflet to help visitors to our towns understand the fabulous history that we share. You can collect a free leaflet about the Cinque port and their fascinating history from the town council offices in Oaklands.

Hythe town mayor Michael Lyons passes the chain of office to Dover’s Neil Rix.

Hythe twinning links are as strong as ever Hythe Twinning Association’s aims remain the same today, post-EU referendum, as they were at its founding almost forty years ago. Their aims are to foster sporting, cultural, educational and youth links with Hythe’s twinned towns of Berck-sur-Mer (France) and Poperinge (Belgium). These are all good and noble aims, but the best part is that members of the association have made some great friends along the way. These friendships bind the towns together even when some of the original links have gone. Visiting Poperinge or Berck is no different to visiting, say, York. They are towns that are easy to get to, interesting to look around, and how much nicer are those visits when you are meeting friends who you’ve not seen for a while? Hythe Twinning Association’s experience is there for everyone. If you fancy a day out, the association can give you information about both towns. If your school or group wants to explore a link across the Channel then they are happy to provide contact details and, where appropriate, funding to help get things off the ground. An independent organisation, Hythe Twinning Association relies on members to help raise funds and enjoy themselves. For details of membership, and other enquiries, contact: amanda.parris@btinternet.com 01303 268375 or chairman kevin.hythe@gmail.com 07552 386039. Saltwood Charity wins national award by Hannah Grover, Clerk to the Trustees, www.virtualgirlfriday.info

Our local Saltwood Charity, The Robert Thompson Charities, has gone from strength to strength in 2016. The charity runs Saltwood Village Hall and Saltwood Almshouses, and has recently been selected as one of six winners nationwide in the Charity Governance Awards 2016. The Charity Governance Awards are a new event organised, supported and sponsored by a City of London Guild in order to shine a light on well managed UK charities. In June, we were also awarded a very treasured ‘Hallmark 3’ status, only seven Village Halls in Kent have achieve this level Having Hallmark accreditation demonstrates that the hall's management committee is managing its charity well. That's important to the individual trustees, the community as a whole and those organisations considering the approval of a grant application. Hallmark promotes their good management village halls through a quality standards scheme which is backed up by a system of peer visitors. The main benefits of the scheme are: • it gives village hall volunteers confidence that they are running their hall in the correct way • it provides funders and other organisations interested in village halls with a benchmark for well managed community facilities.

• it is acknowledged by the Charity Commission The Robert Thompson Trust, as a service to the community, has run the village hall and 8 adjacent almshouses since it was founded in 1899 by benefactor, Robert Thompson. Over the past four years the trustees have striven hard to enhance this service. We have made significant improvements to the arts-andcrafts period village hall as well as carrying out a programme of modernisation to the almshouses. A striking feature of Saltwood, the Village Hall is a picturesque Victorian building next to the Village Green, built in 1899. It attracts an increasing number of people of every age to its regular activities. It is also a popular venue for parties and wedding receptions. The 8 pretty almshouses, next door to the hall, offer low-cost housing for local people who need it. The almshouses are all self-contained

and set within communal gardens. The Trustees are so proud to see the Hall being used regularly by all age groups in the local area. Current users include Flow Pilates, Sandgate Centre for Dance with children's ballet and Adult Flamenco, Shepway Sports Trust with a Table Tennis club, Saltwood Table Tennis leaugue, the U3A with classes ranging from sewing to Thai Chi, Spanish Classes, Puppy and Dog Training, Mindfulness lessons, reading groups, Eternal Yoga, the NCT holding their Ante-Natal courses, and most recently Folkestone Taekwondo Club. At the weekends, the hall is regularly hired for weddings, parties, and other private functions. In the past few months we've had the pleasure of hosting the Saltwood Parish Church Play ’The Importance of Being Ernest‘, Michael Duble and Here Come the Girls, and a Matt Munro Tribute act amongst many other events! We are keen to see the hall used as much as possible, as it's an asset that is there to serve the Village and surrounding areas. If you'd be interested in hiring the hall for your event, or regular class, why not get in touch by visiting the website www.saltwoodvillagehall.co.uk or emailing enquiries@saltwoodvillagehall.co.uk The Trust is keen to grow, to be able to serve the community in the best way possible, and is therefore looking for new members to join the Board.

Hythe by Jane Connolly

It’s that time of year again – the nights are drawing in and the weather is growing colder, which can mean only one thing. Halloween is on its way and something wicked this way comes… Above: Saltwood Church

In previous issues we’ve covered the absolute plethora of phantoms that reportedly stalk the streets of Saltwood and we’ve sunk a few pints with the spirits who haunt Hythe’s pubs. This year, we meet a creepy chap intent on doing some shopping and a mysterious mourner at Saltwood church. All Hythe residents know that if you want to find great bits of memorabilia and curious oddments from the past, the Malthouse is the place to visit. Home to numerous stallholders specialising in antiques, collectibles and crafts, the former brewery building has been operating as a market space since 1974.

a large trilby hat pulled well over his face. He came up the wooden stairs by the café and walked along the gallery passage. At this point I challenged him.” When Win informed the man that the Malthouse was not yet open to the public and asked if she could help, he did not reply. Instead, the figure disappeared through a locked door to the garden. Win was not alone in her belief that a restless spirit haunted the building. Other stallholders were bothered by items being moved from one area to another, while the Malthouse was locked up during the week. Concerned about intruders

“I saw this ‘figure’, a man dressed in 1930s style – baggy flannel trousers, long raincoat and a large trilby hat pulled well over his face” But it seems that antiques aren’t the only echo of days gone by to be found within its atmospheric walls. If the stories are to be believed, there is a persistent shopper there who simply can’t seem to find what he’s looking for. Win Valle ran a stall called Squirrel’s Nest at the Malthouse for many years and was a keyholder for the premises. She told a curious tale about a ghostly encounter that occurred early one Friday morning when she arrived to open up, only to find someone had beaten her to it. “I saw this ‘figure’, a man dressed in 1930s style – baggy flannel trousers, long raincoat and

28 | www.hythelife.org.uk

and thieves, the proprietor arranged for a security alarm to be fitted. The engineer arrived at 9am on a Sunday and he insisted on being locked into the building while he carried out the work, saying he would call the keyholder when he had finished. About two hours later, the keyholder received the expected call, but the engineer had not completed the job. He was “frantic to be let out of the building”, as Win related it, because he had seen the ghost and didn’t intend to hang around to see him again. Once he had been released, he refused to return and a different engineer was later sent to finish the installation.

The manageress at the time claimed to be a medium and she believed that there was a spirit in the Malthouse, although she thought he was mischievous rather than malicious. Locals have suggested the figure could be the ghost of a young man called Mr Thorndyke, who had worked at the Malthouse before the Second World War. Described as something of a workaholic, he might be haunting his old stomping ground. Some people really don’t know how to switch off, do they? You can read more about the Malthouse ghost and the building’s history at www.themalthousehythe.com Finally, we have another first-hand account of a recent unexplained sighting, this time in the grounds of Saltwood’s church, St Peter & St Paul. In the spring of this year, a dog walker was enjoying a stroll around the churchyard and admiring the colourful blossoms on the trees. As they stood with their back to the church’s main door, they saw out of the corner of their eye a figure stride quietly along the path behind them and approach the gate that gives access to the neighbouring farm field. A moment later, our witness turned and, seeing no one, assumed the person had gone quickly through the gate and was now walking across the field towards Grange Road. Reaching this gate mere seconds after the figure would have done, our witness could see no one; nor had anyone walked around the back of the church…

Happy Halloween everyone!

HILL

Have a go learn to sew The High Street was hopping with activities and gastric temptations on 9 July during the Hythe Hullabaloo. The Sewing Space offered a creative sanctuary providing the opportunity to anyone over the age of 8 to have a go at sewing. We’re grateful to those who came in and contributed towards the Hythe Community Quilt. The quilt has now been completed and is looking for a community space to hang out and be admired until it will ultimately be raffled to raise funds for the next Hythe Festival in 2018. We think the result is fantastic. It features log cabin quilt blocks built around familiar scenes of Hythe which were sketched and machine embroidered by India Reeve, who works part-time in The Sewing Space. It’s available to view in The Sewing Space until we arrange a temporary home. So, especially if you were one of the contributors, make sure you pop in and see the final creation! Participants on the day were able to see just how easy using a sewing machine is. This opportunity is available again on National Sew Saturday on 14 October. This is an

36 | www.hythelife.org.uk

annual day to celebrate and raise the profile of local sewing and haberdashery shops. Anyone is welcome to come along and observe or have a go at machine or hand sewing for free. We’ll be making another collaborative quilt by machine and we have also invited Nancy Ademek of Lina Patchwork in Deal to come and demonstrate English Paper Piecing. She will also display many of her hand pieced quilts. We hope you’ll pop in and show your support. There might even be cake!

After a long search for the right place for our passion, we believe that we have found it, here in Hythe. At Hythe Vet Centre we have invested in various new facilities and equipment that will allow us to provide excellent diagnostic and treatment options for your animals, with 24 hour emergency care on site. THESE INCLUDE: • Dedicated parking. • Purpose built surgical theatre, imaging suite and kennels. • Spacious waiting area and large consulting rooms. • X-ray machine with digital processor allowing faster developing times. • An ultrasound scanner similar to those used in human hospitals. • Heated theatre table – to keep your loved ones cosy warm! • Air driven dental machine, not unlike what you would find at your own dentist! • The latest veterinary practice computer system – this will increase the efficiency of the mundane administration side of things. • An oxygen concentrator - this will provide the oxygen that we will use during anaesthetics. Its biggest bonus is that it means that we will not need regular oxygen bottle deliveries, reducing our environmental impact.

www.thetiffin-box.co.uk TiffinBox, a fine dining Indian restaurant, endeavours to create an epicurean traditional Indian gourmet which elevates the emotional and physical well-being of its patrons by its cuisine. Whether you are a devoted vegetarian or a meat eater, our menu and food will excite you. Using authentic Indian vegetarian recipes, handed down from generations, along with new and creative ideas conjured up by our Head Chef, Sandy we combine the best of Gujarati and North Indian food with seasonal and regional variations. We always try to source ingredients locally wherever possible. This means that we cook with the freshest ingredients, support local growers and also reduce food miles. What is a Thali? The idea behind a Thali is to offer all the 6 different flavours of sweet, salt, bitter, sour, astringent and spice on one single plate. According to India food serving customs, a proper meal should be a perfect balance of all these 6 flavours. Dishes served in a Thali vary from region to region in India and are usually served in small bowls, called katori. These ‘katoris’ are placed along the borders of the round Tray.

Barrow Hill Veterinary Group we will shortly be opening a new scanner facility at our Ashford Hospital. The new Toshiba scanner will allow us to  examine internal organs and boney structures in 3D with better detail and accuracy reducing the need for invasive procedures. We are one of the first practices in Kent to install a CT scanner within their premises. What is a CT scanner? A CT scan (Computed Tomography) uses X-rays to produce images of a patient’s body, but unlike traditional two-dimensional X-rays, CT scans create incredibly detailed cross-sectional images (slices) by rotating around the body as the patient moves through the doughnut shaped hole. A CT scanner is also advantageous over traditional x-rays because it can display a combination of soft tissue, bones and blood vessels in a single 3D image. This will have a huge impact on the more complicated orthopaedic, soft tissue and cancer investigations that we are able perform at the hospital. Clients at our Hythe & New Romney clinics can be referred to our hospital for scans to be performed on the advice of your vet and without the need to travel long distances.

Toffee Apples Recipe

Words go left, right, up, down, not diagonally and can bend at a right angle. There are no unused letters in the grid, every letter is used only once. One solution has been done for you.

Kids, get an adult to help you make these delicious toffee apples to eat on 5 November or even before!

Make like a tree and leave

INGREDIENTS 10 wooden skewers (or lolly sticks) 10 Golden Delicious apples, scrubbed 350g light soft brown sugar 2 tsp white wine vinegar 35g unsalted English butter 2 tbsp golden syrup TO DECORATE 2 tbsp Halloween sprinkles 2 tbsp sugar stars 20g ginger snap biscuits, crushed METHOD 1 Insert a wooden skewer or lolly stick into the stalk end of each apple. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment. 2 Put the sugar in a heavybased pan with 120ml cold

54 | www.hythelife.org.uk

water and heat gently, stirring until it dissolves. Bring to the boil and add the vinegar, butter and golden syrup. Boil gently for 12 minutes, until it has reached the soft-crack stage (138°C on a sugar thermometer, or the point at which a little of the mixture, dropped into cold water, forms threads that bend slightly before breaking). Be careful as the toffee is very hot and will burn you if you get it on your skin. 3 Very carefully, dip the bottom two-thirds of the apple in the toffee, turning to coat. Working quickly, add sprinkles, stars or biscuit crumbs to each apple. Leave to set on the baking parchment for 15 minutes.

Hythe Life Sports Welcome to the Autumn edition of Hythe Life Sports. After Team GB’s amazing success at the Olympics and with the inspirational Paralympics just getting under way there is a real sporting buzz in the country. This is reflected locally with the Cannons embarking on a new season and our local cricket teams finishing up their seasons for another year. In this edition we take a look at

the Cannons’ pre-season preparations and what is to come for them in the first few months of the 2016/17 season. We also have a cricket update and we launch a new feature

called Club Focus. In this feature we will look at one of our local sports clubs in detail, highlighting the facilities and opportunities they offer to the local community.

FOOTBALL

Hythe Cannons up and running in new season By the time we go to press the Cannons’ season will be well under way. They have made a solid start to the season at the time of writing so let’s hope this continues and there will be good news to report in our football update in the Winter edition of Hythe Life. There have been the inevitable coming and goings pre-season at the Cannons. Last year’s club captain James Morrish has moved to pastures new as has Connor Hood. Clive Cook has been busy in the transfer market however bringing in new strikers, defenders and midfielders. We welcome prolific striker Kenny Pogue from Eastbourne and striker Charlie Webster from Tonbridge Angels; midfielders Sam Adams from Hastings and Chris Saunders from Ashford Town; and Defender Dan Parkinson from Herne Bay. Defender Ryan Johnson also re-signs for the club after a spell at Greenwich Borough. CANNONS’ BACK OFFICE CHANGES As well as the on-field changes there have been a variety of changes behind the scenes. Three new vicepresidents have been appointed in recognition of their services to the club. They are John Dowsett, David Skeel and Gary Staniforth. All three have either been directors or former chairmen and will continue to be active at the club. The club has also appointed two Associate Directors, Andy Short (Communications) and Ted Malpass (Commercial). They will attend board meetings alongside existing directors Martin Giles (Football Secretary and Match-day operations), Tony Zapp (Finance) and Barry Vincer (Infrastructure). Mark Jenner also joins the board as a director. The club will hope to benefit from Jenner’s extensive experience of nonleague football stemming from his time as Chairman at both Ashford Town and Folkestone Invicta. The club are also looking to strengthen the board further by bringing in a replacement for the supporter’s representative Andrew Johnson who resigned at the end of last season.

CRICKET

Saltwood CC has fantastic season At the time of writing our local teams are in the final throes of their league campaigns. Our sponsored team Saltwood Cricket Club are having another fantastic season, leading in the Kent Village League Division 4 with only two games to go. In the Regional League 1A East they have played 14, won, 10 and are in 3rd place after being promoted last year. A fantastic effort in both leagues. Stand- out performances from the bat have come from Joey Pratt – 105 (pictured); Tom Carr – 113; Jamie Keeler – 102; Biff Sharrock – 98; and Jack Gooding – 95. With the ball there have been a sack-full of 5+ wicket hauls with Joey Pratt 6-26; Ryan Hall 6-16; Joe Pritchard 6-16; Barry Wire 5-8; Jamie Hemphrey 5-7; and Shah Rajput 5-29. There has also been ferocious inter-club competition with the fight for the Tea of the Year award with Owen Reed the current front runner. The winner of the fiercely fought competition will win a bottle of Chapel Down Vintage Reserve. The future of the club is also looking strong with 52children attending the weekly Colts practice nights and 25 attending the highly successful and enjoyable Summer Cricket Camp. Congratulations must also go to Teddy Easthope and Joey Pratt who were the Hythe Life Players of the month for June and July respectively.

Hythe Green enjoys first season in league

Mixed results for Hythe CC teams

Hythe Green CC have made a fantastic start in their first season in the Kent Village League. Being new to the league, the Green have had to start in the bottom division, division 6. They are currently sitting in the third promotion spot, but it’s tight at the top and there is all to play for! The Saturday side are a solid mid table in Division 1B East of the Kent Regional League.

Hythe CC are having a mixed season. The 1st XI are currently propping up the table in Division 2 of the Kent Cricket League and are unfortunately staring down the barrel of relegation. They still have a chance of survival, but it is slim. Fingers crossed for survival! The 2nd XI however are fairing better in Division 3 (2nd XI) of the Kent League currently sitting in 4th place. Despite the gloom there have been some standout performances from some Hythe players this season. With the bat, Christopher Slee scored a fantastic 118, Luke Ronday 111 not out and Grayson Jones 92. With the ball there were figures of 6-56 for Luke Ronday, 5-8 for Grant Channon and 5-12 for Joe Sheppard. Hopefully we will be reporting on championship wins, promotions and relegation survival in the next issue!

Focus on Hythe Cricket and Squash Club The first club to receive the focus treatment are the hosts of our Food Festival, Hythe Cricket & Squash Club. The club has been on the same site, serving the local community since 1856. It has evolved over the years and currently offers cricket, squash, racketball, football, a golf society and social membership. The clubhouse is available for functions and during the summer months, the club run busy and successful car boot fairs. The Cricket section runs four adult teams in Kent and local leagues and also takes part in Colts cricket with coaching available for the juniors. The cricket pitch is well kept and offers an excellent setting for the game. The club also offers cricket nets and other training facilities. The Squash and Racketball Section has 2 courts and run 2 squash teams in Kent League. It also hosts a number of friendly matches in both squash and racketball and a regular Friday evening Squash club night. The section welcomes beginners and more seasoned players alike and runs internal tournaments on a regular basis. The club has a very active junior section and coaching sessions are held by the club’s 2 resident coaches at weekends. The juniors also play friendly matches against other clubs. Hythe Cricket and Squash Club also runs a football team known as the Grovellers that have been based at the club for a number of years. They are also one of the host clubs for Stars and Stripes junior football. A recent addition is a teenage side for the 2016/17 season. The club has a strong Social Membership that run a number of activities throughout the year. The bar is open every evening and offers a welcoming atmosphere for members and guests alike. Most major sports fixtures are televised, there are trips to major sporting fixtures and regular quiz nights. As part of the social membership is a well established Golf Society that plays several golf days throughout the year. Players of all standards are welcome.
