The adventure continues Firstly, I must apologise to all my Hythe Life readers for my apparent silence of late. The summer has been a very busy time for me both as an artist and teacher. Many painting days have occurred including a week painting in beautiful St Mawes in Cornwall, which yielded 23 paintings alone. That said, I am back and writing my regular article once more. I did promise a step-by-step guide, I haven’t forgotten and it will be the topic of my next article.

This time around I want to talk about the pleasures of painting outdoors and in the studio. As some of you may know, I was born and raised on the Romney Marsh and the wonderful countryside from Folkestone around to Rye really inspires my landscape art.  Although I paint plenty of landscapes and seascapes from other areas, both in the UK and abroad, I find I always return to my native homeland. I’m not alone in being inspired by the Marsh; incredible artists from Turner to Nash have made the Marsh a central theme and the work of the great Fred Cuming inspires me each time I lay brush to canvas. Along with these artists, it’s the flat expanse and huge skies of the Marsh that draw my attention

and interesting topic although, in truth, I have barely scratched the surface and I am a passionate advocate of en plein air.  This summer I have had the pleasure of running a few very well attended plein air workshops in Folkestone, Dungeness and most recently Rye Harbour, instructing fellow en plein air enthusiasts. Luckily, the weather, for the most part, has been good for us and I pray that we are as lucky for the workshop in early October.  It’ll be good to end the workshops for this year on a high for those in attendance! As summer gives way to autumn and winter it does become more of a challenge to paint outdoors. So what happens when I can’t paint en plein air?  Well, I turn to my many photos and

I have been painting the Romney Marshes on larger canvasses than my usual smaller plein air panels.  The images in this article are some of my recent studio works.  My favourite is the large canvas of the Martello Towers on Fisherman’s Beach, Hythe, framed by a magnificent sunset. The other paintings depict Dymchurch Bay at sunset and Rye Harbour entrance. Whether working outdoors or in my studio I approach my work in the same way each time, with care and consideration in terms of light and atmosphere.  As an artist I question each and every mark I make, not for one moment settling for what has gone before. I feel it is very important that I try to continuously examine the work to see where I might change something

“Although I paint plenty of landscapes and seascapes from other areas, both in the UK and abroad, I find I always return to my native homeland.” on a daily basis. I almost walk around with a crooked neck where I’m constantly observing the many varied skies that seem to change from moment to moment!  The skies here have a vital beauty and are the unmissable ingredient in making any painting about the Romney Marsh complete.

sketchbooks, shut myself away in my studio, turn on my music and get stuck into painting. I have a strong work ethic and painting is my life and my passion.  I’m driven to create and I’m at my happiest when making art!  The studio allows me to ignore the world outside and I can work in peace without being disturbed.

Therefore, much of my work is created outdoors painting directly from life, known as en plein air.   I have written before on this incredibly diverse

This leads me nicely to what I have been up to lately.  Well, as the wet weather has been doing its best to frustrate me painting outdoors,

that will affect a different and, hopefully, more considered outcome to the finished work. Painting is a learning curve for all who create, a journey of discovery that never ends; only our mortality brings us that inevitable conclusion. Until next time, enjoy your art!

Hythe Garden Designers  Hythe Garden Landscapes are celebrating again after winning an award for the second consecutive year at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. They took a well-deserved silver award. The work for which began some ten months ago when local garden designers, Ferguson & Whyte, spoke to Tusk – a charity supported by Prince William - about a joint venture for a show garden. After several meetings the concept started to take shape. The proposed design was then submitted, accepted and the journey began. The garden, called ‘Not for Sale’, was to represent the current situation in Africa where approximately 80 elephants per day are killed for their ivory. Tusk strives to stop this and with our help, they were able to put their message across to thousands of people, creating awareness of the plight of elephants in Africa. (Visit www.tusk.org for more information). The main feature of the garden was a circular archway of 80 pairs of fabricated elephant tusks. All 160 tusks were hand-made and painted by a small group of local volunteers, who we would like to thank for their dedication and hard work. Although we were delighted to win a second award at this show, the real reward was building something challenging and completely different. Local garden designers Ferguson and Whyte pushed the boundaries of garden design by creating a

Hythe Watch NEWS FROM HY THE TOWN COUNCIL

Message from the  Town Mayor Councillor Paul Peacock

Councillor’s Corner Councillor Reg Belcourt I was originally from Mauritius, which was a British colony when I was living there. I trained and got my master’s certificate on the famous Union Castle Line that used to operate passenger and freight services between Europe and Africa. Mauritius is an English / French bilingual country, so it was easy for me to spend time living in France and Belgium before coming to the UK during the hot summer of 1976. I got my first job working as second mate on the crosschannel ferries for Stena Sealink. I worked my way up through the ranks and eventually joined P&O Stena as a master. Mostly this was sailing out of Dover, but I did have a short spell out of Folkestone too. The love of my life was my late wife Keren, and when I retired in 1999 due to ill health, she encouraged me to become a town councillor. Keren was at that time both a Shepway District and Hythe Town Councillor, and she guided me in my decision to stand for election. My other love is for Hythe itself and I wanted to do something for the town, so it made sense for me to stand here. I lost my seat in 2003, so I worked with the Hythe Chamber of Commerce to promote the High Street and also helped to set up Hythe in Bloom. Working with the traders with Keren and Sally Chesters brings happy memories to me. We felt we were making a real difference. I am particularly proud of some of the projects we started including the Christmas lights, flags along the High Street and the administration of what became Hythe Business and Tourism Association. I was re-elected in 2007. As a councillor I’ve been involved in many things, but I’ve been particularly passionate about continuing to promote the High Street, establishing new allotments at Eaton Lands and getting new football facilities at South Road. I’ve now done 16 years’ service as a councillor for the town and I’ve absolutely loved it, almost as much as I love the town itself. I will not be standing to be a councillor at the next elections, but I will keep on believing in Hythe and its people.

12 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

It was an honour to be elected Mayor for our beautiful town in May. Since then my feet haven't really touched the ground. I have attended numerous civic engagements with other Cinque Ports Mayors and met with local community groups, charities, voluntary organisations and businesses. I have learnt that we are very lucky to have such dedicated residents who give so much of their time for others in Hythe and I will be pleased to continue Town Mayor Paul Peacock to support events which benefit our community and the wellbeing of our area. We are working to develop the Council website and I hope it will also help to inform and explain the plans by Shepway District Council for the proposed development of Princes Parade and Otterpool Park. These are not Town Council initiatives but they will both have a high impact on us and it's important that you make your views known to all councillors so that we can faithfully represent you. The agendas for our Town meetings are always on display on the council noticeboards and minutes are posted on the website. I hope some of you will come to meetings and listen to what is going on. I look forward to seeing you.

Museum chat By Kevin Bailey, curator One measure of success we use at the History Room (if you’ve never visited, it’s sandwiched between the library and the town council offices in Stade Street) is the amount of chatter that children Children are always welcome at Hythe museum create. If they’re making enthusiastic noises about the fascinating history of Hythe, we judge that as a success.  In June we were delighted to welcome 1st Hythe Beavers to an activity session in the Local History Room, and they seemed to have a great time. During their visit, the children and leaders carried out detective work, dressed up, carried out role play and handled artefacts owned by the museum. Hythe history came alive, making the youngsters far more aware of the past and which is all around them in town. Their fast–track journey through time began with the Bronze Age and finished with preparation for war with France against Napoleon. Meanwhile in mid-July, we greeted an excited party from Hythe Bay Primary School on an end-of-term treat. Words such as ‘engagement’, ‘enjoyment’ and ‘enthusiasm’ describe the visits very well. We hope that all involved will be eager to return in the near future to discover more, and that other organisations might want to contact the museum and come along. The museum welcomes further donations or loans of local items for display and talks. We are especially seeking anything related to the fishing industry, Hythe lifeboat, Hythe brewery, the Small Arms School, the Martello towers, the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, the Hythe railway branch line and Portex. If you think you can help in any way, please email me at curator@hythe-tc.gov.uk

Hythe Watch NEWS FROM HY THE TOWN COUNCIL

Allotments challenge It was a very sad day in June when we heard reports that vandals had stolen and broken garden chairs, pushed over sheds, kicked in gates, and damaged vegetables when they raided allotments at Eaton Lands. The offenders had created a campfire site in woodland near to the allotments, and tore down tree limbs to fuel a fire. They also left empty plastic sachets, which are thought to have contained drugs, and numerous empty wine, spirit and beer bottles were discarded on the site. Hythe Town Council officers, accompanied by the Shepway District Council community safety unit and a PCSO, were quickly on the scene to assess the damage, and the police have an investigation underway. How to MiniMise tHeft And vAndAlisM on AllotMents Apart from the obvious things like locking tools and chairs in a shed or growing thorny bushes around your plot, two methods seem to be effective: • increasing occupancy The vandalism occurred at night, so this will only be a deterrent. However, if your neighbours take on an allotment it would provide not just healthy exercise and good food, but increased security too. • social inclusion We have a good idea of who caused the trouble at Eaton Lands, and we think it was youths from local schools. If these youths were directly involved with an allotment, or perhaps knew a parent, grandparent or friend with an allotment, they might have more of a sense of ownership and dissuade their friends from undertaking acts of vandalism.  Thankfully, it is rare for Hythe’s allotments to suffer damage of this sort, which is why we often have a waiting list. However there are a few vacancies currently. Why not email us at admin@hythe-tc.gov.uk for an informal chat?

Shepway Pleased or Shepway Cross? Cross, actually – but in a good way. Hythe’s good neighbour to our north is Lympne, and we were pleased to work with the parish council there and SHAL (Studying the History and Archaeology in Lympne) to refurbish the impressive Shepway Cross (more properly known as the Cinque Ports War Memorial) which is a visible Shepway Cross, at the site of the legendary Court of symbol of a hoped–for peaceful Shepway future after the terrible events of the First World War. However, the origins are much older and stretch back to at least the 12th century. A legendary site The cross was erected at the legendary site of the ancient Court of Shepway. Often reckoned to be the earliest of the common courts, the ‘King’s High Court of Shepway’ is known to have been in existence by 1150 and developed further during the following century. As a royal court, it dealt with both civil and criminal cases as well as certain administrative functions. The Lord Warden presided over the court, which also included representatives of the Cinque Ports as judges. For many years now, the main business of the Court of Shepway has been the formal installation in office of new Lord Wardens. Making the connection The fabled location of the cross and its symbolism encouraged William, 7th Earl of Beauchamp and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports to pay for the cross and officiate at its opening ceremony with a specially convened Court of Shepway. The date of 4th August 1923 The Shepway Cross was opened on 4th August 1923 was carefully chosen because it was the ninth anniversary of the declaration of war by what was then known as the British Empire on the German Empire. Of course video had not been launched back then, but British Pathé filmed the ceremony for newsreels, and you can find it on YouTube by searching “Grand Court of Shepway”. We are aiming for a re-dedication ceremony in October 2017 (a month before Remembrance Sunday so there is no clash) to publicise the refurbishment of the Shepway Cross. It will be a fitting tribute to the bright hopes for a peaceful future that our ancestors had in the 1920s.

Hythe Watch NEWS FROM HY THE TOWN COUNCIL

Flower power

Hythe Town Council wants the town to become a dementia-friendly community

We all like to make a good impression to visitors, and the flower display at the A259 roundabout to the east of the town centre makes a powerful statement that Hythe is friendly, welcoming and open for business. Yet the floral arrangements do not happen automatically – they need to be planned, planted, Blooming flowers welcome visitors to Hythe managed, watered and paid for. This year, Hythe Town Council took over management of the roundabout and worked with volunteers from Hythe in Bloom to ensure that the displays are even more stunning than ever. We hope this cheerful greeting makes you smile as you enter our town.

Dementia friendly – good for business There are 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, which is expected to rise to one million by 2021. Fortunately, over one million people and businesses have already signed up to be part of the Dementia Friends programme and to help make their towns and villages dementia-friendly communities. We know that Hythe has a vibrant High Street that is full of progressive, community-spirited people and that the businesses need to make a profit to survive. Those aims are not mutually incompatible. Helping businesses to become dementia friendly will share part of the responsibility for ensuring that people with dementia feel understood, valued and able to contribute to their community, while showing them how to make it easier for people with dementia to buy from them. Studies suggest that one third of people living with dementia do not feel part of their community. We are aiming to encourage and support all Hythe businesses to become dementia friendly by 2020, since by understanding more about people with dementia, they will be able access a bigger market. A number of Hythe businesses have already attended a Dementia Awareness Forum in early September this year, and we'll offer more Dementia Friend training at a later date. If you work for a business in Hythe, email us at  admin@hythe-tc.gov.uk to get your name on the waiting list.

Local volunteer Sonya Santer worked with Hythe Town Council on the Great Get Together

Great Get Together You might remember the death of Jo Cox, MP for the Yorkshire constituency of Batley and Spen who was tragically murdered in 2016.  Her husband Brendan Cox formed the ‘Jo Cox Foundation’ with the aim of bringing people together in a spirit of tolerance. The resulting project was called “The Great Get Together”, with the aim of bringing people together on the weekend of 18th June. In Hythe, local volunteer Sonya Santer worked with Hythe Town Council to organise a free concert in Oaklands Park and we encouraged residents to come along. On a normal English summer’s day, we can usually be relied upon to moan about the weather. Yet Hythe basked in a heatwave on that Sunday, while approximately 300 people were singing, dancing and enjoying the free music paid for by the Council and performed by the Treblemakers. The Town Mayor of Visit our website: Hythe made time to come along, as did many other councillors. It was a fantastic www.hythetc.kentparishes.gov.uk demonstration of how strong Hythe’s sense of community is.

Hythe Watch NEWS FROM HY THE TOWN COUNCIL

Former town mayor donates to Rotary Free music and dancing in Oaklands Park every summer Sunday

Sizzling songsters It’s not just the burgers and sausages that have been sizzling this summer. This season’s set of free band concerts at Oaklands have attracted record crowds in scorching temperatures. We’ve tried very hard to attract a wide range of talent to Oaklands, and we’re pleased that we’ve been able to offer brass bands, silver bands, rock music, an Elvis Presley impersonator and duets. Not everyone likes all live music, and while some of it might not have been to your taste, we hope you’ve been able to enjoy at least some of it. We’re always on the lookout for more talented local musicians, and if your band or group would like an opportunity for the 2018 season, do get in touch. You’ll receive a small payment for your performance, and the council has all the necessary permissions from the PRS (Performing Rights Society) and PPL (Phonographic Performance Limited), so if we award you a performance slot, you won’t need to worry about the legalities.

Whilst no longer town mayor, Michael Lyons was still able to present a cheque to Hythe Rotary for £500 with the remainder of his mayoral funds. If there’s an event in Hythe that needs organising or security such as running races or car boot sales, it’s very likely that volunteers from Hythe Rotary are the heroes in hi-vis who are organising it. Cllr Michael Lyons presents a cheque for £500 to Hythe Hythe Rotary is a group of active Rotary president John Wentworth-Foster and early retired business and professional people who enjoy the fellowship that comes from working together to support worthwhile causes in Hythe. While the members give their time for free, there are always costs associated with any activity, and the money will be put to good use in and around the town.

Civic Sunday The annual Civic Service takes place a few weeks after the election of the Mayor. Held at St. Leonards Parish Church, it is to celebrate the forthcoming Civic year and to bless the Mayor. A highlight of this year’s service was an accomplished and uplifting performance by the local St Hilda's Ukulele group, with the congregation joining in. Town Mayor, Councillor Paul Peacock said, 'Civic Sunday is a traditional event and I am honoured to be part of Hythe's history. The weather was glorious and it was fantastic to see so many people enjoying the event and celebrating with us’.

My first day at school As children and teenagers across Hythe prepare to start a new school year in september, Hythe life talks to two local teachers about their own school days. elizabeth Petterson was executive Headteacher of saltwood CeP school for 14 years before retiring in 2017. she went to school in london.

luke Haisell was a pupil at Brockhill Perfoming Arts College and loved it so much that he returned as an english teacher.

what do you remember about your first day at school? I don’t seem to remember much of what happened on my first day of my school in south east London; I just remember the approach to the classroom up a long flight of concrete steps with metal hand rails; a big classroom with desks, a carpet area, a set of toilets at the back and a cloakroom. I loved the big playground with a climbing frame, a big area of grass and lots of small gardens where we planted and grew flowers.

what do you remember about your first day at school? With a full school bag of sandwiches, dictionaries, pencils, pens, I made the unnerving walk up Barrack Hill to Brockhill, a place of ‘big’, ‘scary’ students who were older than me. However, this feeling didn’t last long. The exciting aspect of experiencing science, dance, drama and animal care (subjects I hadn’t tried before) as well as making new friends from a whole variety of places made me feel like this was my new home.

what was your favourite thing about school? It was the “add ons” to the core learning in the classroom: visiting the library and choosing books, art, learning to embroider an apron, making a basket out of canes, winning the prize with a friend for the best tended garden plot and sport. I wonder if this was the start of interests that blossomed for me as I got older.

what was your favourite thing about school? For me, memories are made not only in the classroom but more prominently outside too. I had the most amazing experiences on school trips. All of these experiences not only broadened my understanding of the world around me but also provided a real bonding experience which helped me forge life-time friendships.

And your least favourite? School dinners – spam fritters, tasteless mince, rice pudding with a blob of jam. Also the horrible toilet paper that was hard and shiny, like greaseproof paper!

And your least favourite? Mr Rodwell tried his very best to motivate me to complete cross country. If only I realised the benefits of sport and realised just how much I enjoy it now!

who was your favourite teacher and why? Two teachers who saw the whole person and nurtured not only my learning but also my wider skills and interests. Miss Kenney was my Year 6 teacher. I am a summer born child and I really began to thrive and learn with her. She gave me one of the main speaking parts in the Nativity play as King Melchior! Miss Proctor taught me in Year 7. She fostered my love of sewing and acting skills in playing parts of Shakespeare and gave me the opportunity to have responsibility as House Captain.

what is most memorable to you about your school days? Friday treacle pudding in the canteen with homemade custard! One of the most memorable, fulfilling parts of my schooling experience! Also, learning and writing nature poetry in the country park: a really creative experience.

what advice do you have for those starting at a new school in september (or for their parents!). Enjoy the learning adventure; retain a sense of awe and wonder. Aim to be a good friend to others. Never, ever give up.

20 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

who was your favourite teacher and why? Mrs Trevelyan instilled in me a love of English literature which will forever stay with me. English, words and language were her passions and this enthusiasm was infectious. I always relished lessons with her in which I would learn a new word or look at the world in a different light. what advice do you have for those starting at a new school in september (or for their parents!). Love every second because it goes very quickly! Learn lots: take every opportunity your school gives you - go on trips, join clubs, talk to your teachers about life and their experiences. And always smile and say thank you!

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, who wants frugal and sparse? Give us lashings of wool, faux-fur and calories and let’s get our hygge on for winter…

Give us a

hygge

– But very softly. Lots of lamps with low watt bulbs are winners here and even a pre-Christmas fairy light is welcome. Keep it soft and loose, although above a squint, and you’ll create the right atmosphere for your Scandi-style snuggling.

– The golden rule is, if you think you’ve got enough cushions, blankets and rugs… Get some more. And make sure they’re made of natural fibres like wool and cotton.

– Essential oils such as cloves, cinnamon and cedar wood will transport you to the Swedish forests with just one sniff. As Christmas approaches, add whiffs of cranberry and orange to take things up a festive notch.

– Like your soft furnishings, going back to basics with furniture and ornaments will bring the outside in (just watch out for earwigs). Rough wood, rope, shells and autumn foliage will make you feel like you’re embracing nature without having to actually camp out.

– There’s a big difference between cosiness and clutter. Hygge still embraces the very Scandi approach of keeping things simple, so don’t be tempted to swathe every surface with adornments or fabrics. Every item should be necessary, beautiful and above all, comforting.

1. Light it up

2. Soft and warm

by Jane Connelly

Time to warm up your home for autumn? Our Swedish cousins have perfected the art of doing cosy with class If you’re a dedicated follower of fashionable culture, you’ll be familiar with all the Scandinavian influences that have invaded our homes, wardrobes and TV schedules over the last couple of years. But if you’re a latecomer to the trend, you might be a bit baffled as to how to bring that Swedish feeling into your home.

Think getting a hug from an oversized Aran jumper while drinking a vat of Belgian hot chocolate in front of a picture-perfect open fire, while an apple strudel bubbles in the oven… We’re going to put aside the brutal crime thrillers, concentrating instead on the warm and fuzzy side of Scandi life – and head straight to the hygge  (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’). There’s no equivalent word in English for this abstract idea, which basically sums up the feeling of comfort, cosiness and well-being that warms the cockles on a chilly autumn night. Think getting a hug from an oversized Aran jumper while drinking a vat of Belgian hot chocolate in front of a picture-perfect open fire, while an apple strudel bubbles in the oven… Now, for those in the know, the concept of hygge is very old news. Much in favour last year, 2017 saw hygge being shouldered aside to make way for another Scandinavian ethos. ‘Lagom’ is again without direct translation, but essentially it describes frugal, minimalist sustainability. A cooler and fresher look, lagom is a sort of hyggelight – and as I far as I’m concerned, it can fade right away with the summer.

22 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

3. Sweet smell of success 4. Back to nature

5. Pure and simple

6. Dress to impress

– The sofa isn’t the only one to get a seasonal makeover. Replace thin clothes with chunky knits, super-warm socks and at least one epic woolly hat.

7. Food of love

– Comfort food is the order of the day, so forget the calories and indulge in anything that makes you feel warm and nourished. No one’s eating rice cakes in a hygge home.

8. All by myself

– If the family won’t cooperate in the home makeover, don’t despair. You can create a corner in the hygge tradition that is just for you. Put a comfy chair under a soft lamp, swathe it in cushions and blankets and retreat there when you want to read, snooze or just meditate in peace. It’ll be your exclusive corner of hygge heaven.

As Halloween looms, Jane Connolly dons her proton pack and invites you to join her for a spot of ghostbusting… Doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun? Yes, it’s that creepy, chilly time again when all the spirits come out to play, a sense of menace pervades the air and you can barely move in Hythe without stubbing your toe on some spectral abomination.  In  previous  years  we’ve  met  many  of  the  town’s  most  gregarious ghouls, so this time we’re casting our psychic eye just slightly further afield to see what scandalous spectres are to be found in Saltwood, Lympne and Sandgate.  We’ll  discover  disgruntled  Roman  soldiers,  Egyptian  curses, persistent bar flies and ladies with a questionable choice of cologne. First up, though, the Dukes Head in Hythe. Sadly, the pub is currently shut but if the rumours are to be believed, someone is still propping up the bar even as I type this… The former hostelry’s most loyal customer is supposed to be a chap who refuses to give up his stool, a benign spirit dubbed ‘George’ by staff. Let’s hope he’s not too lonely in there, as it might be a long wait for service. Pubs have always been a haven for spirits who aren’t quite ready to leave happy hour behind, although the Ship Inn in Sandgate probably drew the short straw with their particular phantoms. The soldier in Victorian uniform is reasonable enough, but their second ghostly resident has the self-explanatory  nickname  of  the  Fish  Lady.  This  unfortunate  madam exudes a less than alluring odour and is also reportedly fond of poking people in the back – there is a story that she’s a previous landlady who isn’t always pleased with the current management’s choices. Let’s hope they can keep her on side, for their patrons’ sake! Excitingly, two members of staff apparently had a first hand brush with one of the restless spirits, when one bar tender watched the other one walk clean through the ghostly figure on CCTV. Not camera shy then, although we should all be grateful it wasn’t smell-o-vision. When it comes to spooks, you really can’t beat a good old country house. Port Lympne is known for the abundance of exotic wildlife in its grounds, but the mansion itself is reportedly stuffed to the rafters with wraiths and shades.  Among the more low-key incidents have been the sounds of phantom typing, sneezing and German airmen screaming. A Roman centurion has

been spotted strolling across the estate; he might be annoyed about the Roman era remains that were dug up when the driveway was being laid, around 1910. Port Lympne can even boast a connection to a notorious curse, which is  always  fun.  Former  owner  Sir  Philip  Sassoon  was  friends  with Egyptologist Howard Carter, who discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb and allegedly  unleashed  history’s  most  famous  hex.  Thoughtfully,  Carter presented his pal with two plaques that he’d liberated from the tomb and which were subsequently placed in the grounds. Today, no gardener will touch the plaques for fear of being dragged off to Hell or turned into a snake or some such. And no one needs that, do they? Over at Lympne Castle, there are more remnants of Roman tragedy. A sentry is believed to have fallen to his death while on duty in the watch tower. Now he expresses his displeasure by tramping about a bit and scaring folks with his disembodied footfalls.  An  even  more  charming  story  features  the  Norman  soldiers  who discovered six Saxon priests hiding in the castle and promptly hacked them to death. Their lingering (and probably furious) spirits reportedly cause a feeling of despair and unrest in the inner areas of the castle.  Lastly, we whizz back up to that most haunted of Shepway villages, Saltwood – second only to Pluckley when it comes to ghost-spotting. I’m still waiting to actually hear a ghost story attached to this particular spot, but  if  you  take  a  stroll  into  Heane  Woods  you  can  take  a  look  at  the spectacularly creepy abandoned railway tunnel, built to accommodate the now-defunct Sandgate to Sandling branch line.  If it doesn’t set your skin crawling on sight, have a read of Charles Dicken’s  The  Signalman  and  then  pay  it  another  visit,  preferably  by moonlight. Does a phantom train puff silently through the overgrown cuttings and explode through the old tunnel, with a scream of its whistle, when no one’s looking? Oh, undoubtedly…

s! Happy Halloween folk

A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH by Alanna Fraser

How many of us can say we have helped to save someone's life? That’s usually the preserve of the emergency and medical services, all of whom do so willingly and, frequently, selflessly. There is, however, a group of volunteers in Kent whose work does make a difference between life and death: the SERV Kent volunteers – colloquially known as Kent's bloodrunners - and they are in desperate need of new members. their mission? to provide free transportation of blood products, test samples and emergency medical supplies to hospitals in the county, as well as to the Kent, sussex and surrey Air Ambulance, which flies out of Marden. in-flight blood transfusions were launched as part of the air ambulance’s service in 2013 and, in 2013/14 alone, some 160 units of blood were administered to patients with life-threatening injuries. the beating heart of volunteering in Kent Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers (SERV for short) was set up in 1981 to supply a quick and reliable means of transporting emergency blood and blood products to hospitals and medical facilities at night by motorcycle or car. They are, quite literally, the beating heart of Kent's volunteer community. SERV Kent’s service does not stop at blood products, though: it also provides essential supplies to dialysis patients, as well as running medical equipment and supplies to local hospices and other medical facilities.  Staffed entirely by a committed band of volunteers, SERV's ranks comprise of motorcyclists, drivers and controllers who work together to ensure the seamless delivery of their precious cargo. Many of SERV's members have been inspired to work for the charity by their own experiences, or those of people close to them, although admittedly some just enjoy the opportunity to hit the open road on their bikes. They're of all ages and from all walks of life – but what they share in common is the desire to do their bit.  “i thought this was something i could do to give something back” Dawn and Gary Shepherd are a husband and wife volunteer team from Hawkinge: Gary as a bike bloodrunner and Dawn as a controller. Gary explains that, “I volunteer because of my mum. In 1999 she had a collapsed lung and other complications and was in intensive care at the William Harvey hospital. I was just blown away with the care. I thought this was something I could do to give something back whilst also riding my bike.” A 365 day a year service The controllers take the calls and coordinate the logistics of each night’s journeys before handing over to the motorcylists and drivers to make the deliveries. All the bikers must have passed an advanced riding test.  Although the riders and drivers are the most visible part of SERV's service, Dawn is keen to stress that the controller's job is just as important. “A hospital might ring up and say that we need you to collect some baby platelets so you know that a child is in trouble – or they'll actually say to you that they have a child on the operating table bleeding out... but we don't tell the riders how urgent it is because they have to ride or drive within the letter of the law.”

52 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

Their service is provided completely free of charge 365 nights a year and all day at weekends and bank holidays. It costs approximately £3000 per month to keep SERV on the road, funded primarily by donations from members of the public and sponsorship by the local business community. the dedicated volunteers pay their own phone and vehicle costs Indeed, the dedicated SERV Kent members not only give up their time but also use their own phones and vehicles – including their fuel costs to ensure that lifesaving products and equipment are always found where they are most needed, when they are most needed.  They are always looking for new volunteers and, at the moment, particularly controllers. Full training is given to all new members and controllers typically work from home – although so long as they have phone access, they can take calls from anywhere.  To find out more about volunteering or fundraising opportunities at SERV Kent, please contact enquiries@servkent.co.uk or telephone Isabel Kidd on 07540 806213. www.servkent.co.uk.  A blood donation session will be held at the Hythe Scouts Centre  (CT21 6BY) on 6th October. Further information and appointment booking can be found at www.blood.co.uk.

We are a close knit team of award winning builders that were first established in 1989. We are passionate about resin bound and resin bonded drives and pathways. We’ve won industry awards. The resin bond and bound product can be laid over the top of old cracked concrete and tarmac drives, even over blocked paved drives to create a weed free drive with a fabulous finish. Environmentally friendly 21st century drives. It is SuDS (sustainable urban drainage system) compliant.

HL Sports Welcome to the Winter edition of Hythe Life Sports. In this issue we have a look at how Hythe Town FC have started their 2017/18 campaign. We also round up how our three cricket clubs have done this season.

FOOTBALL

Slow start for the Cannons The Cannons have made a slow start to the season. Early exits from the FA Cup and Kent Senior cup do mean that the Cannons can concentrate more on the league. The thumping wins against Ramsgate and Guernsey show what the Cannons are capable of and there is every reason to believe that they can challenge for the playoff’s again this year.

Here at Hythe Vet Centre we want to deliver the very best in professional veterinary care whilst maintaining a loving, caring and family ethos. After a long search for the right place for our passion, we believe that we have found it, here in Hythe. At Hythe Vet Centre we have invested in various new facilities and equipment that will allow us to provide excellent diagnostic and treatment options for your animals, with 24 hour emergency care on site. THESE INCLUDE: • Dedicated parking. • Purpose built surgical theatre, imaging suite and kennels. • Spacious waiting area and large consulting rooms. • X-ray machine with digital processor allowing faster developing times. • An ultrasound scanner similar to those used in human hospitals. • Heated theatre table – to keep your loved ones cosy warm! • Air driven dental machine, not unlike what you would find at your own dentist! • The latest veterinary practice computer system – this will increase the efficiency of the mundane administration side of things. • An oxygen concentrator - this will provide the oxygen that we will use during anaesthetics. Its biggest bonus is that it means that we will not need regular oxygen bottle deliveries, reducing our environmental impact.

Combining 25 years of experience in small animal veterinary practice, Colin, Helen and their team aim to provide a first class service to both you and your beloved pets. We have been awarded Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons General Practice recognition. This is a sought after accreditation that gives you peace of mind that our practice adheres to strict professional standards.
