Alcohol Concern Research by Alcohol Concern has shown that deaths from liver disease have reached record levels, rising 20% in a decade.
Studies carried out by Alcohol Concern and the Health and Social Care Information Centre showed that adults in households in the highest income bracket are more likely to drink above the lower risk level than households on lowest incomes. As many as 7.5 million people are unaware of the damage their drinking could be causing, suggesting that many more people could be accessing support that they may not be aware is available to them. Recently, government guidance on alcohol was updated and changed following advice from the UK’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Sally Davies. The guidance now states that there is no ‘safe’ amount of alcohol to consume; this means that the more alcohol you drink, the higher the risk of a number of diseases.
The CMO’s guidelines also came with some advice to reduce the health risks caused by alcohol intake, including: • Both men and women are now advised to drink no more than 14 units of alcohol per week. • Alcohol intake can be reduced by having several alcohol-free days in a week. • Pregnant women are advised to drink no alcohol at all. • There is no justification for recommending drinking alcohol on health grounds. This means there are no health benefits to drinking alcohol.
Alcohol misuse takes many forms. For some there is limited impact, for others it can affect their work, family life and children. It’s therefore important that there are local services that people can access.

Turning Point is a health and social care organisation supporting people affected by substance misuse, mental health issues, learning disability and unemployment. In Kent they deliver the Out There Everywhere service: an integrated community drug and alcohol recovery service for adults. Turning Point has 6 hubs across the region, including one in Dover. Referrals can be made by professionals or by individuals themselves.
and engaging with meaningful education, training and employment. To ensure long-term recovery, it is also important that people have their achievements recognised as recovery can be a challenging journey. One way in which Turning Point has done this is through the Art in Recovery exhibition which took place recently at Sessions House County Hall, Maidstone, from 22nd to 25th February 2016.
‘At Turning Point we understand that people can be affected by a multitude of issues at once. It is important to think holistically when treating people with substance misuse issues who may also have complex needs’ Turning Point in East Kent provides a range of different services, for people and their families including: group support sessions, to help identify the reasons behind substance misuse; individual support to complement group sessions; and medical services from specialist nurses and GPs. Swital Patel, Operations Manager at the East Kent service said: ‘At Turning Point we understand that people can be affected by a multitude of issues at once. It is important to think holistically when treating people with substance misuse issues who may also have complex needs. ‘In order for treatment to be effective, we make sure to get to know you as a person – not just as a service user. For example, personal recovery plans are written for each person in order to set goals to work towards.’ As part of the personal recovery plans, Turning Point looks beyond short-term treatment to affirm long-term recovery. Support can be provided on how to manage relationships with friends and family, housing,
The art on display was created by service users themselves, based on the theme of ‘Recovery’ – affirmation that there is light and colour after difficult times. Turning Point wanted to be involved in the exhibition to raise the public awareness of their service users’ creative expression of recovery, using art as a medium.

Supporting young people through
exam season
by Alanna Fraser
As the weather begins to hot up, so too does the pressure on young people, as public examinations loom ever closer. With competition for university places and jobs fierce, it is little wonder that many exam-takers feel anxious about the task ahead of them. Whilst exam nerves are natural (and may even enhance performance in some respects), those who are supporting students through the exam season – the stalwart bastion of parents, grandparents and so on – are understandably keen to make the process as stress-free as possible. Hythe Life has put together our ten top tips to help to keep young people healthy and happy during the forthcoming exam period. Encourage teenagers to draw up an exam and revision calendar, starting with the dates and times of all exams to be taken (our resident teacher tells us that, every year, a number of students miss exams or arrive late because they have muddled up their schedule!). Then work backwards to set up a revision schedule for holiday periods, weekends and evenings. Make two copies, so that there is one in a living space (kitchen, sitting room etc.) and one in the student's work area.
1
Set reminders on your own phone for the day before, and the day of, the exam. If a child usually takes public transport to school, offering a lift into school in the 'quiet space' of a parent’s, friend’s, or other relative's car, may help to keep anxiety levels lower.
2
Go shopping together for a set of 'exam stationery', such as pens, folders, audio tapes, notepads and revision cards. Different learners will prefer different methods of revising so the exact list will vary from student
3
10 | www.hythelife.org.uk
to student, but having a stash of 'special' exam equipment will give them a head start in terms of organisation, and help them to feel more prepared. Encourage them to think about how they learn best: is it by visualising, listening, talking or building? Then aim to work together to create revision methods that respond to their learning style. Technology now offers a welter of apps and programmes to assist with revision, which many students find invaluable.
4
Ensure that working environments are comfortable and quiet. Endeavour to keep noisy siblings at bay, and minimise distractions such as TV and social media. Encourage students to work in another quiet place such as a library, if it is not easy to do so at home. If possible (and it is hard with teenagers!), encourage a 'no-phone' policy during revision sessions and, if social media proves to be too tempting, it might be worth suggesting one of the apps now available that can be programmed to block online distractions during study time, such as KeepMeOut or StayFocused.
5
Involve yourself, and other family members, in the revision process to ensure that it is active rather than passive. Too many students think that they are revising effectively by copying out vast swathes of their textbooks/notes but when quizzed on it, find that very little of it has sunk in. Instead, encourage a more dynamic approach: quizzes, tests and past paper work are generally far more
6
likely to make the material 'stick'. One easy way to do this is to get an exam-taker to write their own list of questions (and give you the answers!) and then give them a daily quiz. Make sure they have a glass or bottle of water with them in their revision sessions, and that they take one into the exam itself: numerous studies have shown that good hydration can improve exam performance.
7
Provide regular snacks and meals to those ensconced in their rooms working. It is easy for an exam-taker to forget to eat when hitting the books. It is widely acknowledged by scientists that eating breakfast enhances cognitive performance, whilst certain foods, such as blueberries, are believed to improve concentration and memory. Aim for small, frequent meals that offer slow-release energy rather than a quick-fix: oats, bananas, seeds, nuts, broccoli and oily fish are all brainboosting food heroes, whereas sweets, sugary drinks and junk food can cause physical sluggishness and mental fogginess.
8
Avoid burnout and keep revision in perspective with regular breaks and treats. Rest is just as important to exam success as hard graft, so factor in, and encourage, periods of downtime.
9
Encourage them to have a good night's sleep. Whether a night owl who prefers to burn the midnight oil, or a lark who rises with the sun to work, all teenagers require a good amount of sleep to enable them to perform optimally (around 8-10 hours per night). Sleep is never a false economy: scientists now believe that it is one of the most important factors in exam success, but also one of the most neglected. Make sleep a priority by encouraging a good night-time routine, and suggest powernaps (rather than caffeine) to recharge those mental batteries during the day.

Sene Valley Golf Club Did you know that Hythe is home to one of the oldest golf clubs in the county?
Yes it’s true; the course at Sene Valley Golf Club, at the top of Blackhouse Hill, dates back to 1894 when it first started out as Hythe Golf Club. It was played on until the Army took it over for the duration of the Second World War, after which it fell into disrepair, until the new course, which covers much of the old Hythe course, was redesigned by the legendary British golfer Sir Henry Cotton. He opened it for play in 1967 and it is now recognised as one of the
restaurant area looking across the Channel and Hythe Bay. It is no wonder the Club has become a popular venue for weddings and celebrations, and the Sunday carveries are very busy, so booking in advance is highly recommended. The Club has made every effort to avoid the stigma often associated with many private golf clubs of being “snooty” and unwelcoming. Several years ago it became a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) committed to

welcoming people from all walks of life through the door, whatever their financial means. Nonmembers are always welcome, and anyone can become a playing member for as little as £295 per annum with the club’s innovative Cotton membership. Non-playing membership, giving discounts on drinks and full use of the Club house, is available for less than £2 a week.
The Club has a wide range of membership options and will be introducing a new “partner” scheme in April. A Junior scholarship will be starting up over Easter, as the club looks to find four youngsters who will be given 4-5 years’ free membership of the club and receive free coaching during this time. Ideally it’s aimed at 13-14 year olds. The Club hosts one of Kent’s biggest Open Weeks, with golfers travelling from all over the county to play in events held over 8 days at the start of July. Last year, the Texas Scramble was the biggest single golf day in Europe with 250 golfers participating! With so much going on, isn’t it time you paid a visit to the town’s premier golf club?

Hero of the Skies: Squadron Leader Thomas Page DFM
was one of the most anxious times, as the loss of an engine when fully loaded with fuel and bombs would be disastrous. Our first target was the docks at La Spezia in the north of Italy. This would be a very long flight, requiring full petrol tanks and flying time at maximum range, with 208 Lancasters and 3 Halifax bombers involved in the attack.
2016 marks the 75th birthday of the Lancaster bomber, one of our greatest wartime aircraft. 94-year old Squadron Leader Thomas Page, DFM, who has lived in Hythe for 15 years, was part of Bomber Command, flying Lancasters under the command of Sir Arthur ‘Bomber’ Harris. Here, he shares his memories of taking to the skies in the iconic aeroplane. It was my boyhood ambition to fly aeroplanes and so, in April 1940, aged 18, I enlisted in the Royal Air Force and was part of a group of airmen mustered for training as mechanics. When I was servicing an aircraft at RAF Manston, the Station Commander came to the hanger to fly a small aircraft and I asked him if I could fly with him. We flew over Canterbury to see the damage caused by the German raid during the previous night. This experience – my first ever flight – triggered a drastic change in my service career and I volunteered for flying duties as a Flight Engineer to assist pilots flying the new, four-engine bombers that were coming into service: the Lancasters. After 53 hours of flying training, my crew was cleared for full operational duties. We went to No 49 Bomber Squadron at RAF Fiskerton, just outside Lincoln. For the next few weeks, we completed practice bombing sorties, air-firing and cross-country flying. On the ground, there were drills for emergencies and explanations for what to do in a crash landing, how to escape from the aircraft by parachute and survival if forced down into the sea. On 13th April 1943, my crew’s names appeared on that night’s Battle Order, to fly a Lancaster bomber in an operation. The decisive moment had come for us and the apprehension
14 | www.hythelife.org.uk
before each bombing operation was to start, although these feelings were somewhat relieved by doing all the preparations necessary before take-off. The first thing to do was to fly the aircraft on a Night Flying Test. This was to ensure that everything was working satisfactorily before the bombs and the correct fuel load for the flight were loaded onto the aircraft. Later, we went to the locker room to collect flying kit, helmet, parachute and flying boots. We would dress in clothes suitable to withstand the cold in the aircraft. Now came the worst part of the preparations: waiting outside the locker room
FLIGHT TO LA SPEZIA We set off for La Spezia but at H-hour there was no sign of a raid anywhere. We soon realised the aircraft was off course. With over half of the petrol gone, I knew that, if we did not get rid of the bombs, we would not get back to base. We released them into the sea and turned for home but there was very little fuel left. We needed to find an airfield fast. There were anxious moments as we watched for any of the engines to cut out. We got no reply to emergency calls for identification and landing, but by chance, saw an airfield. Without contact with the control tower, we landed. We had flown alone across the hostile territory of France for many hours, expecting opposition at any time. An examination of the navigation chart and check of the compasses revealed that the main compass was out by thirty degrees! That was a very long, first operational bombing flight and had been quite a lesson. On another operation, we were returning below cloud at 3,000ft with our navigation lights on. Suddenly cannon fire – from the British Navy - hit the aircraft. The noise was uncanny as redhot shrapnel passed through the fuselage close beside us. The Wireless Operator was hit: he had received wounds to his legs and shoulder area, but the most serious was a hole through one of his hands. Getting the first aid kit, I squeezed through to apply bandages and put a tourniquet on his wrist before going back to my duties. At one time, we flew a total of 22.15 hours on four nights in seven days in stressful conditions. On the 15th March 1944, I flew my last operation to Stuttgart. I had flown 211.5 hours by night on 30 sorties over enemy
‘With over half of the petrol gone, I knew that, if we did not get rid of the bombs, we would not get back to base’ for the buses to take each crew to their aircraft. It was at these times that the stomach would churn as one thought of what lay ahead. There would be banter for some, quietness for others. As the engineer, before the flight I would conduct a variety of checks before taking my place on the right hand side of the cockpit beside the pilot. The aircraft gathered momentum down the runway and it took the entire 6,000ft stretch to gain flying speed. This
territory; above all, I just remember the pride of belonging to Bomber Command. 906 aircrew of No. 49 squadron failed to return, a loss of 33% of the aircrew who flew with the squadron. I remained in the RAF until 1968: it was my love of flying, rather than knowledge of German tyranny, that made me volunteer for aircrew duties. But to look down from 20,000ft and see the great areas of fire and the bombs bursting was a sight I would never forget.
Update by Colin Armstrong BVM&S MRCVS GPCert (SAP)
When I graduated from the University of Edinburgh and started my veterinary career thirteen years ago, my goal was always to run my own clinic.
I was always told that running your own business was a difficult job, but I never quite believed it. Whether it is a VAT return, bill to pay, or picture to hang, there is always something to do! However, my favorite part of it all is when I get to do what I enjoy the most – working with the animals, their families and actually being a vet. We opened our doors in December 2014 with an aim to provide the families of Hythe and surrounding areas an outstanding veterinary service for their loved pets. Over the year we have settled well as a team and believe that we are achieving this. We think that how a practice 'feels' is just as important as the equipment it has and the services it offers when it comes to providing great veterinary care. So whilst we do have lots of shiny equipment, we also invest considerable time and enthusiasm into making sure that our customer care is second to none. We promise that every member of our team will always be approachable, honest, compassionate and understanding; and we'll never take your trust in us for granted. In fact, 100% of our clients surveyed believe that the care we provide is excellent. We haven’t had much of a winter yet this year, but it is a time that we see some of our loved
ones stiffening up a bit. As with us, arthritis is a common complaint in animals, and the cold does seem to exacerbate it. The only way a pet can communicate discomfort or pain is to display changes in personality, character or performance. In a lot of cases these changes can be hard to spot because the animal will often only subtly change its gait to compensate for the problem. Quite regularly a lot of owners will view these subtle changes as ‘getting older’ and not necessarily as being in pain and as a consequence go untreated. One of our aims as a practice is to become an integral part of the community within Hythe, and as a consequence we are pleased to be working with local osteopath Niki Mathews Bsc Ost (Hons) BHSAI Cert. Ed. Animal osteopathy is a branch of osteopathy which works on the same principles and theories as human osteopathy, but with the specific manipulative techniques used by osteopaths modified to take into account the difference between the human and the animal anatomical structures. If you think that you would like us to take a look at your little one, or even if you want to have a look round then please do not hesitate to give us a call.
WE OFFER EXTENDED OPENING HOURS TO SUIT YOUR BUSY LIFE: • Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6.30pm • Saturday 9am to midday 24-HOUR EMERGENCY CARE FROM OUR OWN VETS: Outside of normal hours we run our own emergency service - your pet will always be seen by someone familiar, who understands his or her individual needs. St Saviour’s Medical Charity The Onehealthcare facility adjacent to William Harvey, which opens in the spring, will also be an option. Grants are made only for treatments that involve clinical medical procedures, but not for counselling or “alternative therapy”. The financial resources of the charity are limited. Medical need and financial hardship are therefore the criteria used to assess the application. All trustees are volunteers, motivated only by a desire to help others. They receive no payment for the work they do. As a result, virtually all income received is available for the provision of grants.

St Saviour’s Medical Charity continues its generous work for the local community. The recent closure of St Saviour’s Hospital has led to questions regarding the future of St Saviour’s Medical Charity, which has served the local community for nearly 27 years since 1989. Since its foundation, the charity has spent nearly £6 million in assisting over 1500 individual patients. More than £1.5 million has also been given to local medical organisations and charities. The charity continues to help patients in Shepway and the surrounding areas to obtain rapid private medical care. They may otherwise be faced with a lengthy wait for urgent treatment. Historically, most of the charity’s grants have been awarded for procedures undertaken
at St. Saviour’s Hospital, as this was a convenient location for local residents and consultants alike. However, for insurance and ethical reasons, the charity is not involved in selecting the consultant or hospital. With the closure of St. Saviour’s there remain a number of other local providers from which applicants may receive treatment. These include the Chaucer Hospital, the Spencer Wings at the William Harvey Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital at Margate and also KIMS Hospital at Maidstone.
The objective of St. Saviour’s Medical Charity is to make full or part grants to local residents of Shepway and the surrounding area for clinical or medical treatment. It does this in two ways: By providing grants to local residents of Shepway and its environs, enabling them to obtain rapid private healthcare. They must be referred by their GP or a consultant, on the basis that they are experiencing a compromised quality of life as a direct result of NHS waiting lists.

CHARITY The Hospital, built in 1964, was originally run by an order of nuns known as the Community of the Presentation. The hospital remained a charity although the majority of its patients were private. Any profit made was used to help those who could not afford to pay for treatment. With a reduction in the number of novice nuns, advances in medical science and increasing regulation, the nuns were assisted in the running of the hospital by a lay committee of trustees. Over the years up to 1989, the committee extended and modernised the hospital. However, the remaining nuns grew too old to continue, and lay professional medical staff were employed to continue the work. The trustees were approached by BUPA, and the hospital was sold in 1989. Brigadier Ronnie Winfield, then chairman of the trustees, suggested establishing a medical trust to assist in the clinical and medical support of local residents. At that time it was not unusual for patients to wait up to two years for certain treatments. The proceeds of the sale were invested and the income generated was used to help patients obtain speedier treatment, and enable many more charitable grants to be made. Hythe Watch News from Hythe Town Council Fourth Edition
Councillor’s Corner Wendy Peacock I was first elected to Shepway District Council and Hythe Town Council in 1991 and have now served on Hythe Town Council for over 20 years. Being a councillor is a responsibility of two halves – visiting constituents, dealing with their problems and concerns and attending committee meetings where decisions are made. Over the years I have also been involved with various trusts and societies in Hythe and am always keen to let local residents know how they can benefit from these. Councillors can help with all sorts of emergencies and issues. There is financial help available for medical and non-medical problems, clubs, groups and societies. Are you on a hospital waiting list? Maybe the St. Saviour’s medical charity can help. The Wakefield Bequest meets quarterly and can help with small grants for all sorts of things - as can Hythe Sick Fund, The Hythe Institute Trust, The Anne Peirson Trust and others. Not all of these are Council-run, but your local councillor can advise you on access to them. Hythe has the advantage that ancient benefactors cherished the town and set up investments which local people can turn to for help so many years later. When controversial issues come up, it’s great that townsfolk and community groups come forward and tell councillors their views. I stood for election to represent people and if I don't know how you feel I can't do that. 2016 saw the launch of great controversy with the plan to concrete over part of Hythe Green and build a replacement swimming pool. I did not vote for this. Hundreds of residents wrote, e-mailed, telephoned and spoke to me, some clearly in a dilemma as naturally none of us want to see Hythe without a pool. The overwhelming majority of those who spoke out however, were against selling or leasing Hythe Green. But it seems more councillors were prepared to sacrifice this wonderful space than not. The phrase ‘preserved in aspic’ was heard in the council chamber. I have since thought about that. I love my town and, to a certain extent, see nothing wrong in preserving its unique heritage and character. Once our green spaces are gone they are gone forever. The life of a swimming pool is limited. With a little care open spaces can be everlasting and free for generations to come. Look down on Hythe, and it is surprising how few green public areas are left. The media have identified Hythe as a top place to live. Let's hope it stays that way. Councillor Wendy Peacock

Message from the Mayor THE BEST OF LOCAL SHOPPING Hythe High Street is alive and well. The benefits of using our local shops, and the advice and help given by the business community is invaluable. By continuing to support the shops in Hythe High Street, not only will you obtain super value for money and a wide choice of goods, but you will also help to keep the facilities available to your fellow residents, who will benefit from the personal service that we all appreciate. Like many Hythe residents, I walk through the High Street regularly and talk to the traders. The expertise and experience they bring is truly formidable. It is helpful that they will always offer advice on the right product to buy, and order stock if you need it. Sadly, some large organisations lack local knowledge, but I always seem to receive a personal welcome here. THE BEST LOCAL SPORTS The local sports clubs have some excellent facilities. Our football pitches are used by clubs throughout
the county, and Hythe Tennis Club is reputed to be the best in Kent. For casual players, there are also council courts available to hire. There’s also cricket, bowls, a skate park, and our magnificent sports pavilion. If you’ve ever thought about getting into running but are unsure where to start, you could try the new beginnerfriendly running group for female runners, Hythe Blister Sisters. THE BEST LOCAL EVENTS The first week of July brings the Hythe Festival to the town again. The festival promises to be one of the best ever, and I know that it will be a tremendous success. Your town council is proud to support this and I am greatly looking forward to attending some of the many events. THE BEST WELCOME FOR VISITORS In Hythe, we love to see visitors to our town; you might have noticed we’re very proud of it. I hope you enjoy your visit to our active community and enjoy the facilities we have to offer.
The weather forecast Mud and rain. It’s been a feature of the winter, hasn’t it? As we look forward to the summer months, it’s worth considering the magnificent facilities that we enjoy in Hythe. The adult gyms are available for you to use free of charge, the canal bank and seafront is envied for its easy walking and cycling and the football pitches are available all winter. Sadly, because of the Adult gyms are provided free for you to use, unusually wet weather, some of but unfortunately, the winter weather has them have become muddy made the base a little muddy. underfoot and are not always in the perfect condition we all might like. While we are taking advice from experts in ground maintenance to see what we can do to combat the mud for next year, please bear with us. Hythe Town Council can do many things, but it can’t control the weather.

Hythe Watch News from Hythe Town Council Fourth Edition
Good Friday 10 mile run For the last 33 years, there has been an annual gruelling ten mile race from Hythe to Folkestone and back. Many of the runners are raising money for charities, while others are challenging themselves to complete this demanding course. The race starts and finishes on the Green and takes runners up to the Lower Leas Park and back. Because of our superb seaside views and the fast and flat track on the traffic-free seafront promenade, the race attracts a good standard of entry from both local and national entrants. This year, the organisers expect about 600 runners to line up on the day. If you want to support the runners on what has become an exciting and regular sporting event, there will be vantage points on West Parade, Marine Parade and Princes Parade as well as the start / finish on Hythe Green itself. To find out more, or to enter the race, go to www.folkestone10mile.co.uk
Your precept It’s always a difficult decision to decide to increase council tax. Who wants to pay more for their goods and services? Can’t the council be more efficient? While we will be increasing the Hythe Town Council precept for financial year 2016/2017, it is only by approximately 7p per week per household, and of that, three quarters of the increase is accounted for by a reduction in the grant we receive from Shepway District Council. The remainder just covers inflation. As for being more efficient, we intend to promote even more use of the beautiful Town Hall and the sports Pavilion during the coming year. The more times that users hire these facilities, the more revenue we will bring in, and the more services we can provide to residents. If you would like to book the Town Hall or the Pavilion, please email us at admin@hythe-kent.com

Cinque Ports news If you live in Hythe, you enjoy rights and honours that few people living in other cities, towns and villages have. That’s literally true because Hythe is a founder member and head port of the Confederation of the Cinque Ports. Nowadays, the privileges that Hythe enjoys are mostly ceremonial – such as right of access to any future coronation - but the Confederation continues to promote public awareness of The confederation's letter of congratulation was delivered by the the proud history and Admiral of the Fleet the Lord Boyce KG GCB OBE DL to the Queen's seafaring traditions of Private Secretary, Sir Christopher Geidt, on 13th October 2015. On communities which played a the left is the Right Worshipful mayor of Hythe and Speaker of the key role in the early Cinque Ports, Michael Lyons; on the right is Ian Russell MVO, development of Great Britain Registrar and Seneschal of the Cinque Ports. as a naval and economic superpower. It’s not just ceremony though. Confederation members are working to complete a new Cinque Ports leaflet as a great way of boosting the local visitor economy, interest in the Confederation, and for member towns. The aim is to promote tourism opportunities to people who want to come to Hythe and find out more. You may recall that the Queen became the longest-ever reigning English or British monarch on 9th September 2015, and the Confederation of the Cinque Ports marked the occasion by presenting her with a framed letter of congratulation with an envelope bearing a specially commissioned Cinque Ports stamp.
Sign of the times
Under construction at Orgarswick Forge, the new sign took several months to commission, design and complete
Most people know where they live, but not all visitors to Kent know where our own town of Hythe is. Hythe Town Council commissioned a sign which has been erected on the triangle of land at Princes Parade at the junction with the A259 Sandgate Esplanade. Based on a design concept provided by Hythe Town Council and individually crafted for us by Sam Briggs at Orgarswick Forge in Dymchurch, the new sign was designed in 3D to include the town crest of Hythe. It has been put up on a site to the east of the town, so that people traveling from Folkestone and Sandgate will be welcomed to Hythe as they approach. Orgarswick Forge is a great example of a thriving local manufacturing business. If you would like to discuss a metalwork project with Sam, you can contact him via his website at http://sgbriggs.co.uk/

SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT
Hythe Watch News from Hythe Town Council Fourth Edition
Your council and democracy Councillors are elected by the residents of Hythe every four years. Occasionally there is a casual vacancy if a councillor decides to stand down. Former Mayor Alan Smith did just this for personal reasons in December 2015, which left a vacancy on Hythe Town Council. If more than one person is nominated to become a councillor, then there is a by-election, which is what happened in South Ward recently. You may not know that town councillors are not paid. They stand and serve as councillors only because they want to do the best for their community. You may not always agree with their views, but remember they are studying background papers, listening to people across the community and attending numerous meetings to hear views of residents across Hythe. The decisions they make on any one issue may not coincide with yours, but their vote is for what they see as the best in the long term for Hythe, considering the wider context. Think you could do better? Why not get involved? Some councillors are members of a political party and some aren’t – it’s up to you. Alternatively, you could find out how the council works by attending a regular meeting of full council at the Town Hall or a committee meeting at the council offices in Oaklands. You are entitled –and welcome – to attend. Find the dates for meetings on our website at www.hythetc.kentparishes.gov.uk
Pavilion and Town Hall bookings We’ve got some fabulous facilities in Hythe. It’s pleasing to see the Pavilion being booked so regularly midweek, and sadly, we’re even having to turn some prospective bookers away. Meanwhile, we’re delighted to say that eight couples have already chosen Hythe Town Hall as a wedding venue. The Town Hall is close to Hythe’s famous selection of restaurants and with its picturesque setting, it’s an ideal romantic location. If you’re getting married this year, good luck for your ceremonies and your future marriage; we can’t wait to see the photos! Our Pavilion on South Road has plenty of parking and a ground floor with changing rooms. The upstairs has a big modern meeting / exercise area. It’s used for seminars, parties, keep–fit, slimming organisations and many others. We’ve recently fitted some new audiovisual equipment, so it’s also a handy location for presentations and conferences. While the Town Hall is a lovely old building, it does have a modern stair lift, while the newer Pavilion has a lift. If you’re concerned about access for people with physical disabilities, come and look at both sites to ensure it is suitable for you. If you’d like to enquire about making a booking at the Pavilion or the Town Hall, please email us at admin@hythe-kent.com
Tennis & bowls re-start at Easter Not long to go now until all the summer sporting activities restart in Hythe. We’re looking forward to some long, hot months after the drab winter, and we’re starting to get things ready to open on Good Friday. LIBRARY TO BE REFURBISHED Hythe Library will be closed for refurbishment from Monday 22nd February and will re-open on Monday 4th April. During the closure period, Cheriton Library opening hours on Wednesdays will be extended until 6 p.m., and on Saturdays until 5 p.m.The nearest alternative libraries are at Sandgate and Folkestone, as well as at the existing mobile stops in Hythe.

Home Tweet Home by Emma Whyte
Wrapped up against the cold on a winter’s day, I was walking back from Hythe along the Royal Military Canal and as always my eyes were in the bushes, up in the air and scanning the tree branches above my head, keeping alert for a rustle, a swoosh, or a tweet.
At this time of year, before the trees start to cover their bare branches with shiny new green leaves, the birds’ nests are clear to see, seemingly abandoned, and precariously balanced at the end of a forked branch. Each species has its own unique nest-building design, which is perfectly suited to the rearing of their young. Every individual bird instinctively knows how to build its nest and which materials to use in which order. Rooks’ nests are one of the most obvious nests to spot high up in the branches of bare trees - they are messy-looking and their method is quite haphazard. They choose a branch and then just keep dropping sticks on it –

many fall straight through but eventually a few stay, and then it's much easier to build it up. Rooks re-use their nests, and at this time of year it's a great treat to see a large number of individual ones in a clump of trees (they like to be together) working on their nest repairs alongside one another. Other nests are less obvious, and many are tiny and hidden within the branches of evergreen trees and bushes. Robins, blackbirds and song thrushes all use the classic design of a neat cup made of woven grasses and small twigs, camouflaged with moss and lined with mud. A blackbird will delicately weave twigs and grasses into the side of

After collecting cobwebs they'll gather lichens from walls and rocks and place them around the outside of the nest for camouflage. After all that, they then collect thousands (yes literally thousands) of feathers to make a lovely soft lining for their work of art. Altogether it takes about 3 weeks for a long-tailed tit to build its nest! Of course some birds, such as owls, tits, starlings and house sparrows take the easy option and use existing holes in which to raise their young. It might still need lining, but it's a lot less work than building their nests from scratch. You can help birds with this time-consuming job by providing them with natural materials such as cotton wool, yarn, string or wool (less than a couple of inches in length to stop it getting caught around little feet and heads), hair, fur (although make sure it's not been treated for fleas) and clumps of fresh untreated grass. If you can stuff it high into a bush or put it in a suet block feeder they can get to it safely and easily. If you have sparrows nesting nearby, bear in mind that they don't like to fly too far to collect their materials. Spring is the best time to raise chicks because of the emerging abundance of natural food. However, some birds don't need to time their nestlings because they have the ability to feed their chicks all year round. Doves and pigeons nest at all times of the year because they create their own food – rich milk which both females and males feed to their young. The milk forms in their "crop" – which is a food-storage chamber at the bottom of the oesophagus. The milk is highly nutritious and is fed to chicks exclusively for the first few days of their life and for up to two weeks. Spare a thought for the birds that have to collect all their own food – blue tits and great tits gather up to 10,000 caterpillars for their young – that's a lot of flying and to-ing and fro-ing. Collared doves might have developed a great trick to save energy (creating your own milk is biologically ingenious), but they aren't always so successful at building nests. Sometimes these are so flimsy that their chicks fall right through them!
its nest cup, whilst turning it, which ‘Spare a thought for the birds that have to collect all their own food – blue tits and great tits creates a lovely compact shape. Then gather up to 10,000 caterpillars for their young.’ they collect mud from ponds and puddles to add a layer of strength to the inside of the nest. NATURE BLOG Spiders are not just good for a protein-filled snack to feed their chicks, but their webs make very handy nesting material for some bird If you’d like to read my nature blog go to: species. Mackeson Square Renovations
The newly named ‘Mackeson Square’, located just off Red Lion Square in Hythe, is undergoing a transformation. The site is currently fenced off to the public until mid-March, when it will be unveiled. The uneven and drab paving has been lifted, all the old litter-strewn vegetation has been removed and a number of trees have been felled to let more light into the area. The London Plane tree that was planted in the centre has been removed as its roots were lifting the paving, creating hazards for pedestrians. The site has also been lowered, removing the final buried remnants of the brewery and its car park, which were left behind after demolition in 1973, creating a blank canvas for the new scheme. A newly established multi-stemmed silver birch tree will be planted at the site in the proposed grassed area, to provide shade in years to come. New paths are currently being installed and once complete, the reminder of the site will be laid to lawn. The existing benches have been removed and will be renovated and returned, along with litter bins, cycle stands and a new street lamp. With new boundary fencing erected, hedges planted and flower beds created, there will be a park-like feel to the once underused and uncared for area. The work is being carried out by local Hythe based firm ‘Stephen Bailey Landscaping’ who also designed the initial scheme four years earlier. The project was proposed by The Hythe Civic Society, and is being overseen by Shepway District Council, which owns the site. Funding comes from some of the Section 106 money that was granted when Sainsbury’s was

built on Military Road. The hope is to create a more open, light, accessible and useable space that is not only safer but looks far more inviting. Stephen also hopes that the redevelopment, along with the new name and an information board, will highlight the importance of the brewing history that took place on the site which, for many years was the lifeblood of the town. A BRIEF HISTORY OF MACKESON’S BREWERY – WRITTEN BY STEPHEN BAILEY There are a few reminders that Hythe was once a major brewing town; some are obvious and others not so. The brewery used to cover the area from and including the BP garage on military road right through to The Malthouse at the start of the high street. The Malthouse, which is one of the two surviving buildings, used to be far larger than it is today and consisted of massive beams and old stone walls. Slated slabbed floors were spread with damp barley, which germinated to form malt. This was dried in a kiln then brewed with hops to make beer. The other surviving building is The Maltings which used to be the offices for Mackeson’s, and has since been converted into apartments. The only other remaining structure that is ‘unseen’ by most, is the brewery tunnel which runs beneath the footpath adjacent to the car park. This was once the barrel store as it was cool and dark. It is now used by The Venetian
by Stephen Bailey
Fete Society for storage of the floats. Water was taken from local springs around the town to make the beer. Concrete catchment tanks can still be found in the woods up London Road towards Pedlinge from where water was then piped down to the brewery. BREWERY TIMELINE
1669 Hythe Brewery was founded and the Malthouse was built in the High Street by James Pashley of Clyne Hill, Hythe, a Baron of the Cinque Ports, and a canopybearer at the coronation of James II. Boy & Girl Choirs
by Dr Berkeley Hill
Opportunities exist for boys and girls in the Hythe area, who are interested in music, to become members of two separate choirs that are dedicated to developing singing and musical skills in ways that go beyond what schools can usually offer. The Boys’ Choir of St Leonard’s Church, Hythe is part of a long tradition; there are records to show that choirboys have sung here since at least 1442. Ours is the only boys’ choir attached to a parish church in this part of Kent, and one of only about 60 in the whole of the UK. The Hythe Girls’ Choir was started in 2008 to give the same opportunities to girls, and does it so in parallel. The separate organisation reflects the different physical and social patterns of development of boys and girls. The choirs sing together on rare occasions (twice per year). Both sections are joined by the church’s adult singers (men and women) when appropriate. Parents are encouraged to consider membership and urge their youngsters to give the choirs a trial. SOME OF THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS: • Training in voice production, musicianship (sight-reading skills etc.) and theory that can
58 | www.hythelife.org.uk
provide a basis for life-long interest. A graded system of ribbons is used to indicate the level each singer has achieved, based on the Royal School of Church Music recommendations.
The time commitment is not great. The boys rehearse from 6pm to 7pm on Wednesdays. When accepted into the choir after a probationary period, they also sing on Sunday evenings (5.30pm to about 7.15pm). The girls rehearse on Tuesdays from 6pm to 7pm, and normally sing in public on the first Sunday of each month at 9.30am. Both choirs also occasionally sing at events outside Hythe, for example in Canterbury and Rochester Cathedrals, and in concerts. In recognition of the “professional” nature of the role of a boy treble and a girl chorister, a small payment is made per attendance. More substantial fees are received for singing at weddings (which are optional) and special events.
‘Parents are encouraged to consider membership and urge their youngsters to give the choirs a trial.’ • Personal development, including team participation, becoming organised as an individual, recognition of, and striving for, goals. • Familiarity with some of the greatest music composed over the last millennium by major figures from this country and abroad. • Achieving standards of excellence in performance, which are exceptional outside the cathedrals and major public schools. • Positive spins-offs that have been shown to be evident in non-musical studies, which come from being an organised and skilful young musician.
CONTACT Parents are warmly invited to contact the Director of Music. email: b.hill@imperial.ac.uk telephone: 265312 or text: 07777 696945 The normal recruitment pattern is that potential recruits come along to a few rehearsals to discover whether the choir is for them. Most who get this far decide to join.

Hythe Sports Welcome to the spring edition of Hythe Life Sports. It’s been a fantastic few months for the Hythe Cannons who, since the change of management and personnel, have been storming up the league towards the playoffs. We have a full report on their amazing run along with details of their sensational win over league leaders and local rivals Folkestone Invicta. We also have details of how you can
“join in” with local sport with information on how volunteering can benefit both local sport and yourself. Finally we are pleased to report that we will be kit sponsors for Saltwood CC
for the 2016 season. We wish “the Wood” every success in the forthcoming season and hope that they are pleased with their new kit!
Cannons resurgent! It has been quite a turnaround for the Cannons. After a poor start to the season, which led to the sacking of Manager Tim Dixon, the Cannons under Clive Cook have been the form team of the Ryman South. Reachfields has been turned into a Fortress with the club at the time of writing winning their last nine home games! The club’s address (Fort Road) has never been more apt! The Cannons have earned 36 points from a possible 45 in the 15 games since new manager Cook has been in charge and following an unbeaten January Cook was named Ryman South Manager of the month. Many supporters are beginning to ask what might have been had Cook been in
charge since the start of the season. This is all a far cry from the Cannons’ 12-game winless streak at the start of the season. With the prolific Frankie Sawyer and Alfie May being joined by Jack Harris, goals are in abundance for the Cannons. These are truly exciting times for the Cannons as they storm on towards the playoff. The pick of the results was the 2-1 win against local rivals and league leaders Folkestone Invicta. A crowd of 1,527 saw Alfie May calmly slot away an 84th minute winner that sent the Cannons’ supporters into dreamland. Folkestone Invicta have been on fire this season and are rightly favourites for the league title. Given the fact that Invicta had taken the first tussle between the clubs this season with a 3-0 win, the odds looked stacked against the Cannons. The win and the manner in which it was earned is therefore testament to the progress that the Cannons have made. Invicta manager and former Hythe legend Neil Cugley was full of praise for the Cannons following the game. What a turnaround!

Hythe Sports New Sponsorship for Saltwood CC As mentioned above, we are pleased to announce that we are kit sponsors for Saltwood Cricket Club for the 2016 season. The new shirt will be given to club members at the NatWest Cricket Force event on 2-3 April at the Club. NatWest CricketForce is a nationwide initiative aimed at cricket clubs. The programme is designed to bring clubs and their local community closer together, and ensure they’re ready for the new season. In previous years, club projects have ranged from simple paint jobs, sight screen scrubbing, and renewed boundary fencing, to brand new changing rooms, function rooms, and even a new pavilion. The club are always on the lookout for volunteers and new players, so if you fancy getting involved then pop along to the club from 10am both days to see how you can help.

‘Volunteering does not have to mean a big commitment. An hour here and there, odd weekends, or on a regular basis; you can always find the right opportunity to fit around your The first impressions of Hythe is that it's a sleepy little town nestled in between daily life.’ the hustle and bustle of Kent life, and only a commuter ride from the metropolis of London and Europe, but look a little closer and you will find an abundance of sports clubs and sporting activity groups.
From coach to kit manager, every little helps at Folkestone Rugby Club
In order for these clubs to operate, devoted and passionate volunteers are required to help out, whether as coaches, administrators, marshals or transport gurus. Usually it's just a small handful of people who devote their time to getting the job done. If only there were more volunteers to help with the organisation and workload. It is a fact that when volunteers help, more people get active and they contribute great value in creating a happier, healthier nation. Approximately seven out of ten local sports clubs across the UK need more people to lend a hand. Without volunteers, they would simply stop — and we would lose something very special from the heart of our communities. We can all make a difference, however small, by just staying a few minutes longer to help out. Not only do clubs need coaches and
Manning the registration desk for Hythe Aqua swimming club
trainers; “backroom” volunteers are just as important. Keeping the website up to date, accounting for subscriptions, arranging matches and officials, fundraising, match teas, upkeep / maintenance of the changing rooms — the list goes on and on! VOLUNTEERING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A BIG COMMITMENT But volunteering does not have to mean a big commitment. An hour here and there, odd weekends, or on a regular basis; you can always find the right opportunity to fit around your daily life, which could even be the start of something life-changing. It is rewarding to help people of all ages live a more active and healthier life, but you could also be supporting one of tomorrow’s sporting champions! Join in is a London 2012 legacy programme
and is currently funded by government grants and Official Partners BT and Intersport. At the heart of the Join in volunteer community is a unique on-the-ground network of Join in Local Leaders, many of whom were Games Makers during the London Olympics. Hythe is the base of the Kent co-ordinator, Helen Seamer and Local Leaders, Elisa Runo and Tracy Semadeni, who work with a small network of local leaders across Kent. These super volunteers help find and support new volunteers on the ground, and connect them with local sports and fitness groups.
SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SPORT If you feel you could give some time and offer your skills to a local club, take a look at the Join in website, where a quick postcode search will highlight the many sports clubs that need help right now: www.joininuk.org/i-want-to-help/volunteer or to contact a local leader, please email: coordinator.kent@joininuk.org
