Consumers today are met with an overwhelming demand of decision-making on an hourly basis; hundreds of shampoos face towards you on a single shelf, thousands of magazines line up against one another each featuring this month’s most sough-out celebrity, whilst batches of blinding ads gasp for attention in every corner of your retina.

DIY is the other possibility, it's the alternate, somewhat secluded attempt at taking a stance from the ready-made, mass consumer market. To borrow Amy Spencer’s words, DIY culture is shaping your own cultural entity, creating your own version of what’s missing in the mainstream market.

You choose what’s there. Without a conscious stance, you’re just another vulnerable prey of corporate greed.

What is DIY today? How true it is to the ethic of self-fulfillment, self-sufficiency, and individuallistic creativity?

THE DEFINITION

You’re too wrapped up in comparing prices, choosing designs, skimming through the variety in hopes to understand what makes this product significant from the rest—to even realize that there are other possibilities.

It's not about a certain aesthetic value or a specific genre of music, literature, fashion, or even a political stance. It's about a lifestyle in its various forms with an ethic rooted in the core of being the owner of your own life. It may have started off with a cheap xerox machine with a pair of scissors, but the DIY culture has been cultivated through and out its half-acentury history and during this time it has been reinterpreted, republicized, and redesigned numerous times, each to meet the demands of its modern culture.

The intention of this project is to show that simple little pieces that seem like mere nothing when seen individually can acquire greater strength when gathered together. The artist believes that complex details on small planes would scatter the attention away from the audiences.

Thus, she took simplicity on each pieces as a priority when working on this project. The artist aims to make thousand little paintings to be viewed together at once.

Workshop Book Preface The Typography Workshop is a community rooted from and derived within ‘typography’. This community—emphasized by the spontaneous, interpersonal relationship—is, and can only be, humane. The Typography Workshop held at Konkuk University is just a start of a new community. In its core, there is typography, and through it, each participant is interconnected. The experience is, and can only be, precious. Because the community is built on spontaneous contribution, the energy behind the enthusiasm and passion comes within each individual. It is only obvious that the experience is enthusiastic and passionate. For those who formed the community and through the consensus; understood, interpreted, and sensed typography, I send my regards of gratitude and respect.

The Eternal Shoeshine of the Useless Kind & Explosive Cosmic Rock & Roll Existentialism Hanul Kim AN ARTIST STATEMENT I kind of liked the beginning, so I kept on reading the statement. But then it was the beginning of the end of the liking that I had at the beginning.

PERVERTS: ANGER = HAMBURGERS: BEER By the way, what we need in Seoul is the Stooges playing in the subway. Seoul has the most brainless and pissed-off look on people’s faces. Then now we have this big joke, K-pop. The pervert pop has dominated this sensitive fucking country. K-pop phenomenon has been booming up and expanding for the past several years and it is now on the verge of breaking into the American culture. Well, it puts me into this wild and mad state of mine where I get very, very… very bleak. Not only, my friend, have I certainly almost started feeling ashamed and weary when I get on this subject with the American people. But I also like you too. I’m the very right one to be representing this rich and tasteful music of South Korean pop culture to you today. No, don’t be so generous, it is and will be on my duty, after all, to explain to you that I am not here to say that you will be disappointed to know that I indeed am your disappointment. But you are there with me that I will be here without you. Here comes the world wide issue! Actually, I have a confession to make. If I ever get a religion that gives me enough faith and money, I would like to commit manslaughter. I’d like to sacrifice my man slaughtering soul to slaughter every single one of the Korean record company assholes that manufacture these underage K-pop female creatures every 2 weeks. Surprisingly it would fit the whole story in the end. I mean, think about it. That should be the ending of this story. Anyway that’s what makes a comedy. A comedy

is better in reality, right? I’m not demanding some kind of creative storytelling. I just want manslaughter. I’m telling you man, it will sell, the guy that’s sitting next to you, he’s gonna spend some good fortune on it. These companies usually have real wacky, trendy, itlike names, sometimes just the initials. They go by these initials, like they are some kind of.. I don’t know. You know how it feels when you just see initials going back and forth instead of proper names. Anyway there are these three biggest companies, SM, YG and who else... I can’t remember the name of this other one that’s run by this extremely metro-hetero-quatrro-sumosexual dude. Wait, maybe it’s HIS initials. Oh yeah, it IS his initials. JYP. Speaking of the initials, those first two companies are also named after the initial letters of the name of the owner. (When the names are written to pronounce in English) So if I were to make my own K-pop company in South Korea, it would be called HK. Actually that was what these people called me in high school, I had no idea why but another nice manslaughter point. Maybe they were already aware of the Koreans’ initial fetish before me. So if Jesus Christ was interested in Pervert pop, he would have established the late great JC Company in the heart of Seoul. Back to the top 3 of the industry, therefore it makes this tri-gangster-ish union of the mass production pervert pop. It’s like a mystic ancient magic tale. The power within the triad. The triad has exceeded its own power and caused 2012 Kimchi catastrophe. The impression and the notion of ‘girls singing’ are present, but when you look at it closely… It’s made of all these subtle commercial mechanisms. Getting inside of the rightful minds of the fruitful teenagers, male adults well over 30, sexually deprived soldiers in their early


from ‘the Man’. It said, “Be open-minded, and concentrate on opening up every single hole of your body. Big Bang is back, as of February 2012. How can I jump off this K-pop cliff?!

LIT ERA TURE LESS ON I would’ve probably set the school on fire and hung one of the teachers on a homemade guillotine if I went to a Korean high school. But shame on me, I feel like I missed a lot of great Korean literature because I didn’t do my high school times in Korea. Anyway it has nothing to do with nothing at this point. So here I present a poem. An epic poetry about multifaceted-assortedexplosive-cosmic rock and roll existentialism.

20, devoted comrades, jerks, assholes, douche bags, and the last but not the least, the everyday nutritious perverts. And then what those companies will do, they’ll roll yo ass down a hill while you’re jerking and perking off to K-pop. The music itself is a modification of sped-up rendition of 1996 European trance/techno music on an oriental acid and current Top-40 American diarrheas with longer brain damage. The performances are created under one rule, which bases itself on blatant misrepresentation of boyhood fantasy, as if yours wasn’t faint and elegant enough. The subtle message that the K-pop music carries underneath is “I WANT cash and stocks! Right now!! ” Let me ask you. And let me introduce my irritation. Do you think this whole K-pop thing is anywhere near unique of ‘Korean’ that they had to so name it ‘K-pop’? Does anyone feel obliged to be devoured by these greedy grease balls whose sole purpose on earth is to make infinite profits? Do people cry out loud in their showers contemplating the merrily jolly life of living in the K-pop world? Watch out for your blood sugar, because your anger gets angrier. I demand a successful dictatorship on the music department of South Korea, a retrospective Hitler-style management on the mass-market. You’re bound to be a prey. The world within the world. I’m no Hitler, I haven’t been that rejected much to clean off the face of sanity. However I have my own socio-path trance in my mind, that one day I’ll be massmurdering these Korean record company assholes, not one by one, but just the whole package at once. With my trusty 20inch electric chainsaw with a handlebar, I know I am in good hands of Jesus. What’s the one thing that still seeps into the music world? Stupid fucking dumb cooperate bullshit. One day I was walking down the street. I saw a sign, a message, a little note, possibly
