going out of print? september 2010, the chairman and publisher of the New York Times clarified the rumors of its newspaper going out of print by 2015 with these evil menacing words. “We will stop printing the newspaper sometime in the future at a to-be-determined date. could we be any less humanitarian? cellphones, laptops, e-mails, instant messages, commercials after another. has no one got the time to sit back, relax, have a drink and actually flip through some pages? we do. or more like, we should. so kick back, relax, get your cup of tea ready, and flip.

On the morning Sooni is due to leave, my silent heart falls heavily like snow. It forlornly covers the fat stretched map outside the window. Peering inside the room, no one is there. The walls and ceiling are white. Perhaps it is snowing even inside the room. Will you really leave, all alone, just like lost history? Words I should have said before you left, are now written in a letter, but to which street, which village, or under which roof you're leaving to; I do not know- will you remain only in the depths of my heart? Snow keeps falling, covering your small footsteps so I cannot follow them. When the snow melts, flowers will bloom in each of your remaining footprints. Were I to follow them among the flowers, snow will fall in my heart for the whole twelve months of the year.

Yoon Dong-Ju March 12th, 1942

Youth of America is living in the jungle Fighting for survival with the wrong place to go
I heard a friend describe the Wipers recently as suicidal punk. It is dark, desperate, frustrated, hopeless. Greg Safe did not kill himself, he moved to Arizona. Perhaps the music still reverberates in Portland between the cloudy atmosphere and an oily puddle. 30 years later, the attitude and hypnotic sound still echo here, calling on the youth to rectify.
These "Youth of America" have had their imaginations confused and stifled by a complex and elusive oppression. The wipers knew that the foundations of American society were crumbling and one way to warn people of the mass brainwashing was with guitar, bass, drums, and a voice. Not exactly suicidal punk. Deprived yearning schizoid punk.

Mark Lombardi was an abstract artist specializing in what he called “Narrative Structures”, which are like diagrams resembling the structures of sociograms—a type of graph drawing used in the field of social network analysis. However, his structures attempted to document the crime and conspiracy networks of the world collected from news stories from reputable media organizations.
15
Lombardi's first sketches were originally not intended as an artwork, but more as a practical tool for himself to comprehend the masses of information more fluidly. Soon afterwards the rough sketches began to develop into a sophisticated network of a combinations of text and image that he felt “really worked for me in other ways as well”.
I call them “narrative structures” because each consists of a network of lines and notations which are meant to convey a story, typically about a recent event of interest to me, like the collapse of a large international bank, trading company, or investment house. One of my goals is to explore the interaction of political, social and economic forces in contemporary affairs… Working from syndicated news items and other published accounts, I begin each drawing by compiling large amounts of information about a specific bank, financial group or set of individuals. After a careful review of the literature I then condense the essential points into an assortment of notations and other brief statements of fact, out of which an image begins to emerge.
mind map
Working first as a curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, Texas, then as a general reference librarian for the Fine Arts department in the Houston Public Library exposed the artists to large quantity of information, and it was his responsibility to collect, separate, and organize the collection. Also, it gave him the opportunity to conduct the research of his interests; from drug wars to bankruptcy to financial and political frauds.
In his artist statement for a show in the late 90s, Mark described his work as follows:
My purpose throughout is to interpret the material by juxtaposing and assembling the notations into a unified, coherent whole. In some cases I use a set of stacked, parallel lines to establish a time frame. Hierarchical relationships, the flow of money and other key details are then indicated by a system of radiating arrows, broken lines and so forth. Some of the drawings consist of two different layers of info—one denoted in black, the other, red. Black represents the essential elements of the story while the major lawsuits, criminal indictments or other legal actions taken against the parties are shown in red.
At the height of his career, on the afternoon of March 22nd 2000, the artist was found dead in his Williamsburg studio. Autopsy resulted in suicide and since then it has been suggested that a number of frustrating accidents intensified his mental and physical health. However, some of his friends think differently. Perhaps drawing one too many charts dealing with high-profile powers might have resulted him a ‘call’. Whatever it is, there seems to be much more than just the cover.
Every statement of fact and connection depicted in the work is true and based on information culled entirely from the public record.
