Richard and George Lowe

Smithfield

In November 2023, Richard and George Lowe began milking their indoor herd of 150 pedigree Holstein Friesian and Jersey cows on two Lely Astronaut A5 milking robots. The Lowe’s calve all year round and this helps them to maximise their efficiency on the robot and spread workload. George, who had milked in a parlour all his life and his son Richard felt that robotic milking would make it easier in terms of labour on the farm. For a year after, they milked a second herd through the parlour due to the volume of cows, but in December 2024 they made the move to exclusively milk through the Lely Astronaut A5s. “Labour was a big driver in our decision to put in robots, but it also was down to our cows. They’d be high producing cows and being milked 3 times a day is really key to make is easier on the cows, and also for longevity. With the robot it takes the pressure off both us, and the cows. We aren’t tied down to milking times, we’re so much more flexible - with more time for other jobs on the farm and also our family.

George’s son Richard finds Horizon, the herd management software extremely beneficial, “it’s the information we have on all the cows too that is a huge help. We can get the most out of the better cows and pinpoint exactly where we need to adjust; even for our nutritionist to come in and have all the data to hand is a huge plus. With the feed to yield system, we can make sure that the high performers get that little bit extra, and the lower yielding cows aren’t being overfed—which is good for them and helps us to maximise feed efficiency!”

Since starting the robots, the Lowe’s have seen how it has helped them with improving production on the farm. “ We saw a big lift in milk yields since putting in the robots. We were worried they might drop for the first year while both us, and the cows were getting used to the system - but it was the opposite! It’s been so positive so far and we look forward to seeing what’s in store for the future.”

On the farm there is also a Lely Discovery 120 Collector, which vacuums manure to keep the shed floors clean, helping to keep cows comfortable and clean. The Lely Juno, which is the latest addition to the Lowe’s farm, autonomously pushes in silage at the feed barrier.

New Developments creating excitement in 2025

In this issue you will read about our new HerdStrategy service. This is a service that has been requested by members in resent times and we are very proud to now launch this service. The herdbook and the national herd have made huge strides in cow fertility and milk solids over the last number of years. This has delivered hugely in terms of profitability and sustainability. Today we have more considerations to push our herds to the next level. Breeding for additional longevity through better conformation and health is essential along with the key profit traits. In order to help guide this, the HerdStrategy service is a key service to drive breed development.

We are also adding to the team in IHFA. Damien Storan is our new full time classifier, he will also assist with the HerdStrategy service. Damien brings a wealth of breed knowledge and experience to the roll. We are also adding long-time member, dairy farmer and vet, John Moore, as classifier this summer. The additions to the service are necessary due

to continued growth in demand from members and other breeds.

The national genotyping program has been a great addition to the herdbook, currently ~60% of the cows are genotyped. This opens up several new possibilities. Work from Teagasc & ICBF now allows for the management of the Holstein haplotypes and we expect more developments in this area. It also allows more options for genomic evaluations, and we expect to soon be able to offer UK evaluations for PLI for genotyped animals.

You can keep up with developments during the year with another new development, our Webinar series. Keep an eye on socials for details.

Sincerely

Registration Errors and how to avoid them

What is SRM?

SRM means that a bull is on the supplementary register. He is not pedigree. Please note, some bulls, although having an FR code may in fact be crossbred.

Be Aware - Protect Your Herd’s Pedigree Status

When choosing a sire from AI, do not assume that all bulls are pedigree registered. Always check with your provider before purchasing straws.

SRM bulls may be up to 100% Holstein Friesian but are not backed by pedigree lines.

How does this affect the status of offspring?

If you use an SRM sire on a pedigree cow, the progeny do not qualify for pedigree status. How this affects future generations in the herd depends on the sex of the offspring. Female progeny will be graded ASR and generations of pedigree bred lines will be disrupted.

The same does not apply for males. An SRM sire will result in male offspring being graded SRM. The consequences of this will impact future generations as EU Breeding Rules do not allow grading up through the male line.

FRX Blue Card

There have been a number of incidences recently where pedigree registered animals are issued blue cards with FRX as the breed instead of FR.

The Department of Agriculture have indicated that it is possible to update a full Pedigree animals blue card if it has FRX as the breed in error

To do so:

• Contact your local DVO

• Produce the pedigree cert showing full animal pedigree

• Complete form ER94(b)

AIDING SUCCESSFUL TRANSITION INTO PRODUCTIVE LACTATION

Ketosis is one of the most common metabolic diseases affecting dairy cows in Ireland. It typically occurs when a cow is unable to meet the energy demands of early lactation. Ketosis causes her to go off her feed, resulting in weight loss and a drop in milk production.

Ketonor+ supplies readily available energy to help get her eating and drinking again, as well as essential supplements to support the liver, rumen and immune system.

Each 135g bolus contains fast available glucogenic energy sources (propionates 104,000mg), with Vitamin A, Vitamin E, slow-release cobalt, selenium, niacin and yeast (Saccharomyces cervisiae).

Maurice Harty - Ballylongane Herd - Co Kerry

Nestled between the sea and the mountains just outside Ballyheigue, Co Kerry, you’ll find the Ballylongane Herd. Owned by the Harty Family, Maurice, his wife Geraldine and their three children Aisling, Muiris and Gearoid. The first pedigree heifers were purchased by Maurice’s Father, Martin, in 1968 and the Ballylongane prefix was started. Today the herd consists of around 100 milking cows, the Harty’s calve down around 170/180 per year, a proportion of which are sold just fresh, hence the herd figure standing at 133 currently. The system is a spilt calving operation, with 6 weeks in the winter between 1st November to mid December, with about a month downtime to pick up again in the middle of January with the spring calving group. The land is split between grass, spring barley and beet. 80% of the cereals and beet is kept for feed. A diet feeder is utilised for around 9 months of the year, depending on grass growth and weather conditions. When selecting bulls, Maurice refers back to his ideal cows in the herd. These are high yielding, balanced in type, fertile and have ‘power and protein’. When looking at linear traits, a predominately right-handed linear is a must, if there is a negative this must be small. Maurice follows the U.S index Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) closely and tries to select bulls positive on DPR where possible.

Michael McNamara - Barna Herd - Co Cork

In Newtownshandrum, on the Cork/Limerick border, the McNamara family—Michael, Rachel, and Emma—are the dedicated farmers behind the Barna herd. Michael alongside his two daughters, milks 200 cows, with a total of 260 calvings annually, surplus stock is sold fresh. They also rear 100 breeding heifers.

Supplying Kerry Agribusiness, the McNamaras manage a 120-acre grazing platform, utilising a feed-to-yield system in the milking parlour, alongside buffer feeding. Their herd follows a spring calving pattern, with breeding strategies prioritising milk production, fertility, and component percentages. They utilise sexed semen extensively, using it for 100% of heifer first services, followed by Holstein Friesian stock bulls. 80% of cows are served to sexed semen, with 20% receiving conventional, for the first 3 weeks of the season. 100% conventional semen is then used for the second 3 weeks, followed by beef stock bulls to sweep up.

Tail paint serves as their primary heat detection tool, allowing for effective herd management. Looking ahead, the McNamara family aims to maintain their milk volume while improving protein levels and calving intervals. Their commitment to herd excellence was recognised in 2024 when they secured 1st place in the National Herds Competition in the Elite Spring Section.

TJ & Ryan Meegan - Munta Herd - Co Louth

Father and son duo, TJ and Ryan Meegan farm just outside of Dundalk, County Louth. Milking 300 cows, under the Munta prefix, the herd has seen steady expansion over the last 10 years, from 180 cows to the numbers today. Ryan is the 3rd generation to farm the land. The herd is 100% spring calving, starting around the 6th February, with the last calved by the end of April. Ground conditions are dry, allowing for turnout by day since the beginning of February. Last year the herd received around 1.5 ton of ration through the parlour’s feed to yield system. The herd are milked through a 20-unit swing over Delaval parlour with auto ID. The milking cows are health and fertility monitored using the Sensehub Collars, Ryan states they have utilised those for the last ten years.

When picking a bull team for the breeding season, predominantly genomic bulls are used. The herd was traditionally a liquid milk herd, so improving milk solids without losing volume is a priority. Milk kgs, Solids kgs and percentages, without compromising on fertility sub index. Some may recognise the Munta prefix for having bred popular AI Sire, Munta Mystic, who currently has over 1300 Irish daughters in over 400 herds in his daughter proof.

IHFA HerdStrategyIntroducing

Introducing IHFA HerdStrategy:

The Irish Holstein Friesian Association (IHFA) is proud to introduce its latest initiative, IHFA HerdStrategy. This innovative breeding programme is designed to provide our members with a comprehensive analysis of herd performance and a customised plan to reach herd-specific breeding goals. IHFA HerdStrategy aims to support breeders in making informed decisions that will shape the future of their herds.

What is IHFA HerdStrategy?

IHFA HerdStrategy uses your current herd performance and genetic levels, combined with your own breeding goals, to set the selection criteria for the future direction of the herd. It does this by analysing the individual breakdown of each cow in a herd, assigning a score based on various traits. These scores incorporate essential performance indicators, including:

• Economic Breeding Index (EBI)

• Production

• Conformation/Classification

• Fertility

• Health Cows that receive the highest points are identified as the most balanced and profitable within the herd. Additionally, the programme helps create a customised bull selection criteria specifically suited to each herd by using the current best cows as the guide to future performance goals.

The top 20% of cows in your herd, for your goals, are key to the process. They show, firstly, how your best genetics perform within the herd. Secondly, they allow us to predict what a future herd with the same genetics are capable of doing in the same system. Lastly, they provide the basis for the bull selection criteria that will begin to move the full herd to the same performance levels.

Why IHFA HerdStrategy?

IHFA HerdStrategy simplifies herd assessment, making it easier to identify top performing cows and determine which bulls are best suited to the herd to achieve your desired outcome.

Key benefits include:

• A clear ranking of cows from the top 20% to the

bottom 20% of your herd.

• Identifying the most profitable cows, in turn selecting which to breed from to ensure longevity and maximum margin per day.

• Creating a bull team from the top 20% of cows for optimal genetic progression.

How Does IHFA HerdStrategy Work?

The programme evaluates each cow in the herd, scoring them across more than 20 traits, including production, EBI, and conformation. The scoring process includes:

• Assigning points based on performance in the top 60 percentile for each trait.

• Adjusting emphasis on specific traits based on the farmer’s breeding priorities.

• Summing up the total score for each cow to determine overall ranking.

• Averaging the top 20% of cows and generating a summary of their performance.

• Utilising this summary to guide bull selection for future breeding decisions.

Data-Driven Decision Making

IHFA HerdStrategy utilises comprehensive performance records and genetic indices toprovide farmers with a structured and bespoke approach to whole herd improvement. Classification, MilkRecording and genetic evaluations are key. They provide the scientific basis for the programme as well as clear, independent data.

Supporting Farmers Every Step of the Way

IHFA HerdStrategy is more than just a breeding tool—it is a support system for dairy farmers. Through workshops, expert consultations, and ongoing research, IHFA provides guidance to ensure farmers can make the most of the programme. IHFA aims to equip farmers with the knowledge and resources needed to optimise their breeding strategies.

How do I access this service?

If you are interested in the service for your herd contact the office on 023 8833443 or email Damien at dstoran@ihfa.ie

FUNCTIONAL TYPE - A key consideration!

Why conformation matters!

Recent work carried out shows that the heifers with better functional type last longer in the herd when taking fertility group into account. The work also showed that heifers with higher mammary scores had lower SCC.

Teat Length - An ever increasing concern

A cow needs to be able to walk to the parlour to milk...

Locomotion is hugely important in the cow; we are asking her to walk further so we need to ensure that the locomo- tion score is high enough. We would like to see, when classifying, a locomo- tion score of at least 6 but the higher the better. The base cow is under 6 so we need to select bulls with a plus for locomotion.

It is very important to know the linear score of the cow as it has a large impact on the bull you can select to get the desired progeny. Take your teat length for example - at classification, you don’t want too long and definitely don’t want too short, 4.5 to 6 is a good place to be. Below this point you will want to consider which bull you are using.

Welcome Damien Storan

IHFA CLASSIFER AND BREEDING PROGRAMME ADMINISTRATOR

Damien commenced his role as IHFA Classifer And Breeding Programme Administrator in January of this year. Damien hails from a Pedigree Dairy Herd, Liskinett Holsteins in Limerick where he still loves to exhibit their stock when time allows. He has been an active member of IHFA and YMA for a number of years. Damien has previously worked in the animal health industry, giving him great experience in husbandry and nutrition. He also worked in the AI industry which gave him the opportunity to travel across Europe and North America where he got a great insight into commercial pedigree breeding of dairy stock on very varying systems. From his involvement at club and national level, along with judging schools and workshops, it has given him the opportunity to judge shows from YMA Club Shows to Local Shows and he has been delighted to represent Ireland at the European Judges conference 2025.

Genetic Selection for Bovine Tuberculosis Resistance

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) poses significant challenges to the dairy industry in both Ireland and the UK. Recent advancements have highlighted the potential of selective breeding to enhance resistance to bTB in dairy cattle. This article examines the breeding indexes developed by the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) and the UK’s Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), comparing their evaluations and discussing the implications of utilising genetics to combat bTB.

ICBF’s Approach in Ireland

In 2019, ICBF introduced genetic evaluations aimed at identifying cattle with increased resistance to bTB. These evaluations are based on extensive research indicating significant genetic variability in susceptibility to Mycobacterium bovis among Irish Holstein-Friesian herds. The breeding values are expressed as the predicted prevalence of bTB in an animal’s progeny; lower values signify greater resistance. For instance, a bull with a breeding value of 10% is expected to produce offspring where, on average, 1 in 10 will be diagnosed as bTB reactors, in infected herds, during their lifetime. This tool enables farmers to select breeding stock that not only excel in overall performance indices, such as the Economic Breeding Index (EBI), but also possess enhanced resistance to bTB, thereby complementing existing eradication programs. ICBF recommend that to improve TB resistance, herds should aim to use bulls with a PTA (breeding value) of less than 8%. For more rapid improvement, use bulls of less than 6.5%.

Table 1. Balanced Bull Team Example: All Bulls under 6.5% TB, as recommended by ICBF for rapid TB resistance improvement.

AHDB’s Initiative in the UK

Similarly, the AHDB has developed the “TB Advantage” index to assist dairy farmers in breeding cattle with improved resistance to bTB. This index was formulated following extensive research involving over 650,000 Holstein cows with bTB records. The TB Advantage is expressed on a scale where higher values indicate greater resistance; specifically, for every +1 point in the index, there is a corresponding 1% reduction in the likelihood of daughters becoming infected during a bTB outbreak. This allows farmers to make informed breeding decisions, selecting sires that are more likely to produce bTB-resistant progeny.

Comparative Analysis

Both ICBF and AHDB have recognised the heritable component of bTB resistance and have developed tools to aid in selective breeding. While the underlying principles are similar, the presentation of breeding values differs:

ICBF: Breeding values are expressed as the predicted percentage of progeny likely to contract bTB, with lower percentages being more desirable.

AHDB: The TB Advantage index assigns positive values, where higher scores correlate with increased resistance, and each point equates to a 1% reduction in infection likelihood among offspring.

Despite these differences in expression, the objective remains consistent: to reduce bTB incidence through informed genetic selection.

Implications of Genetic Selection for bTB Resistance

Incorporating bTB resistance into breeding programs offers a sustainable and complementary strategy to existing control measures. TB resistance is part of the health sub-index so generally selection for a good health figure will help with TB. We would recommend you still look at the figure for each bull so any very poor bulls can be avoided. If you are in a TB blackspot it may be worth putting extra emphasis on TB.

Annual General Meeting

On Friday 31st January we held the IHFA YMA AGM in the Maldron Hotel in Portlaoise. We had a fantastic turnout and it was encouraging to see so many new faces in the room. The future is looking bright for our Young Members with lots of new ideas being put forward and plenty of positive changes suggested for our current calendar of events.

Our National Chairperson gave an address to the room on what a successful 2024 we had in YMA. Both our National Co-Ordinator, Rachel Corley & National PRO, Jane Hannan are stepping down from their roles and we wish them the very best in their future. We had a very informative talk from Rachel McNamara from the Barna Herd in Newtownshandrum, Co.Cork. Rachel is a familiar face within YMA and we had a great time talking all things YMA, Careers and how YMA can be so great for people going up through college and how it is such a great topic to walk you through interview techniques! Since the AGM, we held our first National Meeting of 2025 on Thursday 20th February where our new National Co-Ordinator Megan Boal was elected in alongside our new National PRO, John Halton. We would like to wish them the very best as they come on board and we are looking forward to the year ahead with lots of events to be planned for 2025.

e tank: Haniko, Chief, Lambda, Davinci, Holysmokes, A2P2, Arrow, Yamaska, onway, Renegade, Rubels Red, Adorable, Mitchell and Hampshire riteria: The first thing I focus on is the overall linear score looking for and longevity One of the most important traits here at Greenlea is positive f llowed by the overall functional type and good components usage: Of all the black and white semen used, 95% would be sexed would mature into a high-yielding, well-balanced cow with the strength for maintaining a youthful appearance that classifies high. A cow that is easy on asy to sell

hael Kennedy - Glenrea

Whats in the tank: Renegade (FR6406), Conway (FR7608), Pazzle (FR9052), Chilli (F7910), Rocknroll (FR7806), Rubels-Red (FR9740), Wyman (Pgw), Altamonson (FR7578), Topmodel (FR9031), Slash (FR6376), Hoeve Woody (FR9744). I also have a small number of sexed Lambda, Chief and Hulu in the tank

Selection Criteria: The traits I look for are firstly Milk kgs and kgs of milk solids for production A good balanced conformation with good stature, good chest width, good rump width and a correct udder with a good legs and feet score I also look for a good TPI score where available. A good reliable cow family behind the bull is also very important for me. Sexed Semen usage: I use sexed semen on 100% of the heifers and around 20% of the cows

My ideal cow: is a medium sized powerful cow Wide chest, open ribbed, wide rump and a well attached correct udder with a good set of legs underneath her. She must have good feed conversion with the ability to produce high volumes of milk while going back in calf yearly She must also have good longevity to fulfill her potential

chael Spillane - Mountain (Friesian)

tank: Martini, Mountain Martell 24, Firoda Centurion, Mountain Glenalbyn 7, ris, Lismulligan Excalibur, Firoda Dragonet

Selection Criteria: I use mostly daughter proven bulls, the cow family is very important to me, this probably draws me to a bull first and foremost I don’t follow EBI, I mainly look at Milk, Solids and functional type

Sexed Semen usage: We have used sexed semen but not a lot, I would only use it early on in the season on heifers and a few select cows

My ideal cow: would last for 10/12 lactations and calve every year Good solid type again helps with that longevity The hope would be that she’d come from a long line of good cows

WINTER FAIR SUPREME HEADS SOUTH AGAIN!

IHFA Breeders success at the Royal Ulster Winter Fair 2024 writes Donal Carey

IHFA breeders and YMA members were to the forefront at the 38th Royal Ulster Agricultural Society (RUAS) Winter Fair on Thursday December 12th last. Hallow Octain Twizzle ET (Picture 5) exhibited by Philip & Linda Jones, Gorey, Co. Wexford won Senior Holstein Champion, Exhibitor bred Champion, 1st 4-Year-Old cow in-milk & best udder and she also went on to win the Supreme Interbreed Senior Champion crown. It was also a memorable day for the Hynes family, Aherla, Co. Cork whose Junior 3-Year-Old Eedy Rubicon Acclaim (Picture 4) won 1st in her class & best udder, Reserve Senior Champion, and Honourable Mention in the Supreme Interbreed Senior Championship. Ellys KD Rhapsody (Picture 3) exhibited by Steve & Maria McLough-

lin, Ellistown, Co. Kildare won the Junior Championship, and she was also crowned Champion of the Junior Interbreed Championship.

YMA Members Clodagh Kennelly (Picture 1) (Kerry club) and Manus Murphy (Picture 2) (Carlow Kilkenny club) both won 1st place in their respective Junior and Senior Showmanship classes. Other YMA members who attained showmanship success include Georgie Hynes (Cork club), placed 2nd in her Junior class and Jennifer Harty (Kerry club) placed 2nd in her Senior class. Nathan Thomas, Triple T Holsteins from Ohio in the USA was the judge of the 38th RUAS Winter Fair. His judging credentials are strong having previously judged at the World Dairy Expo in Madison USA and at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, Canada. He has also judged National shows in South America, Mexico, Australia and Europe.

The Senior Holstein Championship was full of quality and style. It included; Peak Solo Rhapsody (Picture 6) exhibited by Steve McLoughlin who won 1st Mature Cow, Hallow Hurricane Twizzle (2nd Junior 3-Year-Old) Hallow Solomon Arengatang (2nd Senior 3-Year-Old) Hallow Denver Twizzle (2nd 4-Year -Old) exhibited by Philip & Linda Jones. In his reasons crowning Hallow Octain Twizzle ET as Senior Champion the judge stated “She is a beautifully balanced cow with a tremendous udder and a quality set of feet & legs”. The showing successes of Hallow Octain Twizzle for 2024 include Supreme Champion of Tullamore National Livestock show. In early January this year she was Classified EX90 2nd calver (max score). Reserve Champion Eedy Rubicon Acclaim classified VG88 as a heifer. She is backed by ten generations of VG/EX Dams. Five weeks fresh in

Hallow Octain Twizzle Eedy Rubicon Acclaim

her second lactation at the time of the show, she recorded a first lactation yield of 10,809 kgs milk, 786 kgs milk solids (305 d).

The quality of stock turned out by all exhibitors was of the highest standard. The profile and popularity of the Winter Fair as a focal point showcase for the dairy industry continues to go from strength to strength, credit to the work of the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society. Once again, a large contingent of visitors from the South were in attendance testament to the location, venue & facilities and eager to enjoy a prime spectacle of top quality cattle from breeders both North and South.

Clonder Ant EX93 10E bred by Jim & Derry Byrne, Clonder herd, Clonmore, Bree, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford is described as a “dream” of a cow, “a once in a lifetime cow” who was retired from the herd last December. Her departure from the Byrne family farm, although a sad milestone is a decision which rests easy upon Jim who surmises “Having yielded over 140,200 kgs milk, 10,745 kgs milk solids in fifteen lactations and in her 20th year – she fully deserves a wellearned retirement from the milking parlour”. She now resides on a neighbouring farm, in the bloom of a deserved honourable retirement. Jim states “While sad to see her leave and it is the end of an era, I contentedly chose to give her the grace of retiring on her own terms, she has left an indelible genetic imprint on the herd and without doubt her legacy is assured”.

The Ant family is a home-bred cow family, established when the herd was Graded Up to IHFA Pedigree status in the mid 2000’s. She is bred from two consecutive generations of Dutch Holstein Friesian sires (a coincidence). Her sire Prince Charming was used as a promising young test bull. Clonder Ant is the flag-bearer for the family, transmitting her unique traits generation after generation, with sixteen family members currently in the herd.

Jim recalls how she Classified GP83 as a heifer and steadily developed in every subsequent lactation. He states “She always had a very farmer friendly conformation and it was satisfying to see her functional qualities being recorded and recognised by the Classifier. She never had any issues with her feet – her foot was never lifted for the hoof parer”. Testament to her functionality and durability as “a trouble-free cow all her life” she attained EX Classification

score for the tenth time last July less than four months shy of her 19th birthday.

Her descendants classified VG/EX in the herd include:

The Clonder herd of 98 Pedigree Registered cows is managed on a split 60/40 Spring/Winter calving pattern. The target yield per cow is

>8,000 kgs milk, 650 kgs milk solids. The herd is entirely all home bred, backed by very successful cow families.100% AI breeding has been practiced for decades.

Jim describes the soil type as a medium dry farm overall. “The farm is comfortably positioned regarding Nitrates and stocking rate, we are fortunate to have a surplus of slurry storage capacity. Throughout the Summer months maximum use of grazed grass is practiced with 4kgs of a dairy nut fed in the parlour. A TMR of two-thirds grass silage, one-third maize silage and 6 kg of 24% C.P. nut per cow is fed throughout Winter.

Emerald Expo returns on Saturday April 26th

Now in its 13th year, Emerald Expo returns to the Virginia Show Centre in Co. Cavan on Saturday April 26th. This all-dairy breeds cattle show is the very first show of the year in Ireland with a substantial prize fund on offer.

The Emerald Expo main sponsor is FBD Insurance with supporting sponsorship from IHFA, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Tirlan.

The prize schedule includes seven Championships. The Emerald Expo youngstock confined class is a dedicated class open to breeders from the surrounding IHFA club areas, Breffni Oriel, North Eastern, West Midlands and Donegal. Once again, all eyes will be on the top calibre stock in contention for the Emerald Expo Senior Champion and the prize of taking home the Seamus Kelly memorial perpetual trophy.

The Virginia Show Centre is an impressive facility and all visitors to the show can be assured of an hospitable welcome from the show centre personnel. The location is very convenient and is amenable to exhibitors and visitors from Northern Ireland. Young Members (YMA) handling classes will kick-start the show proceedings on the day.

MEET THE JUDGE

Andrew Cope – Judge at the 2025 Emerald Expo Show. Andrew Cope, from the renowned Huddlesford Herd in Staffordshire, is a third-generation farmer with a lifelong passion for the Holstein breed. Coming from a family deeply invested in pedigree breeding and showing, Andrew has been fortunate to achieve significant success in the show ring. The Huddlesford Herd has claimed Supreme Champion titles three times at both the prestigious Royal Show at Stoneleigh and the European Dairy Event. Their breeding accomplishments also include producing a European Intermediate Champion at Fribourg with Huddlesford Duplex Medora, along with numerous other accolades. As a respected judge, Andrew is a member of the UK Judges Panel, the European Judges Panel, and the Brown Swiss UK Panel. His expertise has taken him across Europe, where he has judged in Spain, Denmark, Hungary, Ireland, and at many major shows in the UK. His wealth of experience and deep-rooted knowledge of pedigree breeding make him a highly regarded figure in the dairy cattle industry. Andrew’s keen eye for quality and dedication to the breed make him an outstanding choice to judge the 2025 Emerald Expo Show.

Richard Whelan, Emerald Expo Show Director states the continued success of the Emerald Expo, now in its 13th year, is a reflection of the commitment from all involved including sponsors and cattle exhibitors. Richard “On behalf of the organising committee, I especially thank FBD as title sponsor and thanks also to the IHFA, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and to all class sponsors. As Emerald Expo is the first show of the year, it is an exciting spectacle to mark the beginning of the 2025 show season and open the door for breeders wishing the market their cattle. As always we extend an open invite to Holstein Northern Ireland breeders to be a part of the show, entries are open for all exhibitors both in N.I. and R.O.I. EX93 2E by Sunnylodge Linjet EX93

Eedy Doorman Fame’s Dam, Clonpaddin BK Fame, was Jason’s first purchase of his own at the age of 18. Purchased from the 2015 Dalevalley Sale, Jason recalls “I had my sights on a fancy Goldchip bulling heifer from the Fame’s, but my budget didn’t stretch that far. The Brokaw was my second choice, and I couldn’t let her go, from the day I brought her home I knew it was meant to be. She was All Ire-

land Heifer In Milk herself and she’s bred us a back to back National Dairy Show Champion and last years’ Intermediate Champion (by King Doc), we owe a lot to her”.

The All-Star Award is the continuum of the renowned Royal Dublin Society (RDS) Champion of Champion award, a fabled annual award which was in place for decades in recognition of the historic role and association of the RDS in breed improvement involving all livestock breeds through the prism of the RDS Spring Show era. The Champion of Champion award was discontinued by the RDS in recent years and the PCBCOI now carry that torch forward through the All-Star Award function. All member herd books are invited to participate by nominating their chosen recipient.

The award was presented to the Helen family at a special PCBCOI function in Portlaoise on Saturday March 1st. All PCBCOI member herdbooks were represented, and the attendance also included a VIP guest who presented the award winners of every individual breed. Jason said of the award “We feel extremely proud to have bred a cow like Fame and of all her achievements, but to have her recognised in this way is very special. Fame hasnt put a foot wrong since the day she was born, she keeps herself to herself and gets the job done without any fuss. We’ll probably never have a cow like her again”.

The Eedy herd of Robert & Sylvia and Jason & Laura Helen is located at Lyre, Clonakilty, Co. Cork. The herd was established by Robert & Sylvia in 1994 and is managed today in a family team effort joined by their son Jason and his wife Laura. Top quality milk is supplied all year round in a 50% Autumn/ 50% Spring calving pattern. Average annual milk recorded production per cow last year was in excess of 9,300 kgs milk, 695 kgs milk solids with an SCC average of 84. 90% of the herd is Classified to VG/EX standard of conformation.

‘Fame’ Family Fact File!

The story of the ‘Fame’ family in Ireland begins with the live importation of Moralta Inspiration Fame EX97 from Canada.

• There has been over 1100 decendants of Inspiration Fame recorded on the national database!

• There are nearly 600 ‘Fames’ alive today in the irish herd

• Of those 600 ‘Fames’, nearly 300 of those are in milk

PURE FRIESIAN CLUB NEWS

News Since Winter Journal:

For more information on any of these items, please visit www.irishpurefriesian.com.

The club held its AGM at the Horse & Jockey on Thursday November 21st and welcomed newly elected member Sam Dudley to the committee. The attendance was strong again this year with the members enjoying two really great IFA updates from Bill O’Keeffe and Conor O’Leary, club members with national positions in the IFA. A very informative and engaging evening. Thank you to our speakers, Bill and Conor, and to all who attended on a dreadfully cold night in between snow showers!

The meeting was held on the 21st anniversary of the first AGM for the Irish Pure Friesian Club and several of the members who attended that first AGM were present on the night, including our wonderful Club President Michael Dempsey.

While the AGM went ahead despite the bad weather, our first on-farm meetup of the year fell foul of the heavy snow in January in Tipperary. We’ll get back to Vincent Carr later in the spring no doubt. Keep an eye on the website for the announcement of that rearranged meetup.

Upcoming Events

Save the date!!

At the AGM it was decided to make an interesting change to the club’s national open day – we’re converting it to a seminar and showcase sale for this year, 2025. The seminar and showcase sale will take place on Wednesday 22nd October 2025 at Kilkenny Mart. We’ll have lots more information and details as we get closer to the time, but make your plans now. Join us for original panel discussions in the afternoon, dinner at Langtons @ Cillin Hill, followed by the showcase sale of pedigree British Friesian stock from 7pm.

It promises to be a new and exciting event, building on the demand for British Friesians generated by our previous annual open days, supported by the IHFA, sponsors and trade stands.

Club Trip to Cremona November 2024

The last days of November saw 19 club members travel to Milan, Italy to visit Cremona Dairy Show and visit some farms. The first farm visited was the Ciceri Family Farm, with the prefix OLZA, milking 300 cows on both robots and a conventional parlour. OLZA Holsteins were milking 30 EX Cows on the day of the visit. The second farm visit was Societa Agricola Rinaldi, milking 1,000 high producing cows in a brand new rotary barn with excellent facilities. There was also an on farm AD Plant, supplying him with fertilizer, electricity and hot water. A relaxing and enjoyable few days were then spent in the Italian countryside along the Po River valley, sampling local cuisine and beverages. We hope everyone enjoyed the tour.

Congratulations to the Curtin family—Aobhinn, Shona, Blaithin, Cara, and Darragh on receiving Judges prize. It’s great to see such dedication and enthusiasm at such a young age. Well done!

On January 16th, our club gathered at the Woodlands House Hotel for an insightful evening with guest speaker Tommy Heffernan (Tommy the Vet). Tommy provided an excellent overview of calf health, covering everything from birth to the yearling stage. He discussed the various challenges that can impact a calf’s health, whether indoors or out at grass. The evening was filled with engaged attention from all attendees. Tommy

emphasized that the key to a healthy calf is adequate space and fresh air. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Tommy for his time and for sharing his extensive knowledge with us. It is greatly appreciated.

Wedding Bells

Congratulations to Owen Laffan and Marie McNamara on your recent marriage. Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness from all members of the Limerick and Clare Club.

The Northeastern Club had a quiet but interesting winter season. Along with continuing to increase membership and YMA members we held our Herds Competition results evening.

As usual the Snail Box restaurant near Ashbourne proved to be a warm and welcoming venue. Their refurbished layout was very suitable for our gathering.

Norris Beattie (Treasurer) & Leo Nulty present a cheque for €1350 to a Meath Hospice Homecare Movement Ltd representative.

Thanks to the subcommittee members (Paul Flanagan, Dominic O’Halloran, Joe Connell, John Halton & Norris Beattie) for organising the Competition. Patrick Kelly used the IHFA National formula to assemble the overall score using a scaling of Inspection results. We had 28 herds in our 2024 Herds Competition. Jonathon Kelso (JK Genetics) sent his apologies. Jason Booth (Beechview Herd) was on hand to give feedback.

Joe Healy of the Copperbeech herd topped the Spring Section in both the points awarded by the judges and in the production / Judging aggregate.

In the Intermediate Section: Pat Tuite’s Maurill herd topped the judging score; whreeas Ray Reynolds, the judging runner up, gained the production / Judging composite score.

Leo Collins Jnr, from the famous Oldrose Herd topped the Senior Section: in both the points awarded by the judges and in the production / Judging combination.

NORTH EASTERN

It was no surprise that the Premier Section was clearly won by, none other than, Colin Walsh, for his Fairview Herd, with the judge’s maximum points and a majority collective score.

Bull Progeny List was topped by Siemers Lambda Haniko; Plain-Knoll King Royal; VH Ramsey; Siemers Henley.

Cow families that surfaced to the top were: Peach; Iris; Warner; Lillie.

Spring herds: Joe Healy had the best heifer - Copperbeech Perseus Daisy; Seamus Conroy had the best Junior Cow – Knockbridge Montross Lillie; Padraig Floyd had the best mature cow - 2046 Shamrock Mystic & best 3 heifers - 2607, 2552, 2536.

Intermediate herds: Rory Dwyer had the best heifer – 3791 Apple ; Ray Reynolds had the best Junior Cow – Ramsey Gay; Pat Tuite had the best Mature Cow - Maurill Perseus Leda, & best three heifers - Maurill 90468 ArtisanXX, Maurill 82357 Yamaska Miss America, Maurill 2388 Yamaska Sunflower.

Senior herds: Leo Collins claimed 3 top places with: Junior Cow – Al Rose Royal Paradise; Mature Cow – King Doc Joan; Group of 3 heifers –3494 Royal Louise; 3499 Royal Joan; 3580 Yamaska Snowdrop. Frank Byrne won top heifer Glenrowan Del Sol Iris.

Premier Herds: Best heifer Norris Beattie - Delasheen Luster P Lola; Best Junior Cow

Brendan Mennis – Boynevale MVP Elegance; Best Mature Cow Colin Walsh – Fairview Damion Idella; Best three heifers Paul Flanagan – Tubbertoby Barolo Joy, Tubbertoby Haniko Joy, Tubbertoby Haniko Jasmine.

Many of our herds are high volume orientated. This reflected in the Milk Solids figures. Premier herds top 3 - 833 789, 760Kgs; Senior herds top 3 - 706, 690, 664Kgs; Intermediate herds top 3 - 715, 701, 671Kgs; Spring herds top 3 - 625, 613, 533Kgs.

It is good to see our herds are increasing in EBI values. Very often we observe that there is a conflict between EBI values and Conformation scores. Breeders were given a certificate to highlight their achievements in each category. These were very well received. In each section the leader in the Judge’s score and the leader in the production / Judging aggregate score received an annual cup. It was no surprise that the Overall award went to Colin Walsh, for his Fairview Herd.

The ‘Judges’ awards’ went to two ladies who showed tremendous interest in & knowledge of the cows they presented to the judges. Katie Hayden & Niamh Floyd were worthy nominees, though there was some stiff competition to catch the judges’ attention.

The Maurice Kellett Petpetual Cup was this year awarded to a Club stalwart who put gathered and bred a herd of good cows with exceptional type and tremendous production. His farm near Ardcath, County Meath hosted the Teagasc Liquid/Winter Milk Conference in 2017 and the IHFA National Open Day in 2018. He is a solid rock of sense and a gentleman. Leo Collins senior, founder of the Oldrose Holstein Friesian herd, is a very worthy recipient of this privileged award.

We are looking forward to celebrating the NE Club’s 50th Anniversary in 2026. We are exploring various events and functions and publications for 2026 and a few leadup events in 2025. We are looking out for any other events on which we could build a trip or a function.

On a sadder note, we have been notified of the death of former members

James Conroy, Knockbridge, Co Louth; Mary Tuite, Adcath, Co Meath; Frank Deering, Ratoath, Co Meath. We keep their families in our thoughts.

We are most grateful to all our sponsors, especially FBD, Cookstown Dairy Services & McAuley Feeds, for their financial support.

We are very appreciative of, and wish to thank, all Club members for their commitment to activities. We thank our committee members for their attendance, enthusiasm and energy.

SLANEY

World Wide Sires Calf and Cow Wellness Workshop

Slaney Members and others were very appreciative of having the opportunity to attend this workshop. Many thanks to Colin Stephenson of WWS for organising this very informative workshop and to Seamus & Bridget O’leary for facilitating the event on their farm on 27th November last. Speakers from Techmix and SCCL spoke on the most effective practices for calf health and milk replacers, the transition and freshly calved cow and other topics. The soup and sandwiches available on the day were most welcome.

Winter meeting and Silage Competition Results

Held on 3rd December in the IFA Centre, Enniscorthy, the speaker was Brien Reidy of Reidy Ruminant Nutrition. He is renowned countrywide for his ability to formulate a diet that best suits individual herds to maximise yield and profit. He gave us a very interesting presentation on the importance of feeding the dry cow before and after calving to get the best performance from her.

The results of the Club Silage competition were then announced by Stephen Hughes, Agriking Congratulations to the following members on their success

Christmas

Party Night

Members had a very enjoyable night in the Ashdown Park Hotel on the 6th December. Many thanks to Una Sinnott for organising the event and to members who battled storm Darragh to get there and were grateful to get home safely.

Bowling

The years activities came to an end with bowling at Leasuremax, Wexford. The evening included excellent finger food and a chance to chat and enjoy the banter. Many thanks to all who travelled and to Noel Kehoe for organising it.

Winter Fair

Congratulations to Philip and Will Jones of Hallow Holsteins on winning the Royal Ulster Winter Fair at Balmoral in December. It was their 7th time taking home the Royal Ulster Winter Fair Championship – this time with Hallow Octain Twizzle VG89 winning the Exhibitor Bred, Best udder of the show and Interbreed Championship. They also had 1st and 2nd place in the 4yr old in milk class.

Upcoming Events

Club AGM and AI meeting in March

The club are very appreciative of all our sponsors and of club members for their support and commitment to activities. Finally, we wish everyone a speedy recovery from any illnesses or injuries and look forward to seeing you all again at club events.

Field Evenings

The clubs first event kicked off with our first field evening on the farm of Richard Kingston. A large crowd travelled from both sides of the club and further afield to view a very impressive group of animals. Judge on the night was John O Sullivan.

Our second field evening took place a week later in the farm of Phillip Cusack, again there was a great turnout, and the quality of animals didn’t disappoint, judge on the night was Eamon Coleman.

Congratulations to all stock judging winners and thanks to both hosts for two very enjoyable evenings and thanks to both judges.

Herds Competition

The club’s herds competition took place this year in June. There was a large entry of 32 herds, this year the junior section was judged by Liam Curran and the other sections was judged by John O Sullivan (Lisduff). Despite the large amount of herds it ran very smoothly thanks to the work of club chairman Gordan Nicholson who travelled the

TIPPERARY WATERFORD

length and breadth of both counties with judge John O Sullivan.

Thanks to both judges for doing a tremendous job.

Awards Day

Our annual awards day was held on the farm of Owen and Orla Cleary. Thanks to the Cleary Family for welcoming everyone to their farm.

Thanks also to Delaval for their sponsorship of the herds competition.

Club Trips

This year the club headed to Holland, we flew out Wednesday 13th November. The first visit was at Bossink herd of Gerrit Van Der Kolk. The second visit, Werners family farm, we stayed the night in Zwolle.

The first visit of Thursday was Bijsterbosch family farm, the second visit, Reinders family farm. We were treated to lunch by Wim de Boer of Veecom and given a very interesting talk on his business and the important part triple A plays in their breeding decisions.

The first visit of Friday was at Bles dairies, an excellent farm using Semex genetics. The second visit, Wadden Max farm. Ben van Tilburg and family have an organic farm with traditional horned black and white cattle, making cheese, yogurt and selling the meat from their culls… probably the most profitable farm we visited. We drove to our hotel near Schipol for our last night and flew home on Sunday morning.

Night Out

In December we had our annual Christmas night out. Unfortunately, the weather was very bad on the night and prevented our judge for the herds competition attending. Despite the small numbers an enjoyable night was had by all, and everyone enjoyed the four-course meal provided by the Talbot hotel in Clonmel.
