COURSE INTRODUCTION

BACHELOR OF INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE HONS.

The UNSW Bachelor of Interior Architecture Honours degree (BIA) is a comprehensive, robust educational experience due to our people; our students, academics and professional staff. Across the breadth of the Interior Architecture program our students transition from school leavers to professional designers who will thoughtfully and abundantly contribute to our city making. Enriching and rethinking the places we dwell, work and play and enhancing the ways we operate within our cities. The BIA graduation project locations are selected due to their potential contributions for Sydney and our broader urban context. Each project is a university yearlong design exploration. This extended period of learning provides the graduation cohort with an extensive understanding of the design processes associated with the built environment of a city. The students learn to work at a scale from an urban context through to a scale of human inhabitation at a granular level.

COURSE INTRODUCTION

The 2017 project is the White Bay Power Station. The sites revitalisation will be a large part of the Bays Precinct Sydney Urban Transformation Program, under Urban Growth NSW. Thank you, Urban Growth NSW for your contributions to our 2017 graduation project. The complex nature of the projects potential for Sydney will deliver the graduation students with an academically challenging and practice based capstone Interior Architecture design learning experience. The 2017 graduation project provides an insightful and visionary Interior Architectural forecast for future possibilities for Sydney. We are extremely proud of our graduates each year and on behalf of the Faculty of Built Environment UNSW I wish our 2017 all the very best with their future careers.

SEMESTER 1 The first semester of the BIA Graduation Studio focuses on intensive thematic research into the chosen site. White Bay Power Station is an iconic landmark in Sydney and the students needed to uncover a range of different aspects of the site in order to develop their spatial strategy for a large civic centre, with a focus on innovation. Working with our client Landcom has been a great opportunity for students to work closely with the industry. Through this intense research phase, students translated their programmatic strategy into design proposals. Using the brief as the research underpinning, students proposed an initial strategy to link and intertwine multiple interiors of different scales, characters and atmospheres. Special emphasis was placed on interiors that were accessible to the general public. The big scale design propositions, formed the base for the second semester which focused on detail design. Using architectural drawing and modelling techniques, the students developed their own architectural style and strategy to successfully communicate their ideas to the client. The whole team of tutors (Victoria Judge, Brian van der Plaat, Alanya Drummond, Yasmine Ghoniem and John Gounios) and myself, as Course Convener, enjoyed working with the students and enabling the materialization of the design on the base of their intentions.

SEMESTER 2

Z

The UNSW BIA (hons) graduation design studio focuses on the agency of the interior within the context of the urban morphologies and civic typologies of the twenty-first century city. In partnership with Landcom and the UrbanGrowth NSW Development Corporation, this studio engages stakeholder strategies for The Bays Precinct Sydney in the development of design proposals for the ‘recovery and re-purposing’ of White Bay Power Station in Sydney’s inner West. The design propositions for this urban landmark site synthesize critical research through master planning and architecture to interior material assembly and bespoke detailing. Bringing to life The Bays Precinct Transformation Plan by Urban Growth NSW, our graduating students have focussed their proposals as civic contributions, with an emphasis on innovation and public activation. These projects promote urban environments that support the complex social and cultural conditions of a successful contemporary living city. Through the framework of this studio project, our graduating cohort is engaged in the political and social agency of their discipline in the development of the urban interior. Conscious of their opportunity to develop design as a significant driver of innovation, these works describe a very different future of design practice, one that involves the democratization of good design, collaboration and social contribution as core to contemporary design practice.
