EARTH DAY IAAS LC UNPAD

Jatinangor - Did you know that last April 22nd was World Earth Day? Well it was! The Science and Technology Department (STD) held an Earth Day celebration in collaboration with BEM KEMA Unpad, HSE Geologi Unpad, BEM KEMA FTIP Unpad and supported by UPT Lingkungan Rektorat Unpad. The event is called “Earth Day 2016, Unpad Goes to Green Campus” on April 18th, 20th, and 22nd, 2016. One of Earth Day activities is 1000 Tumbler Movement and Plastic Diet that have been purposed to encourage people especially UNPAD students to reduce plastic usage in daily activities. This event and celebration’s purpose is to inform, to educate, to remind, and to let people know that the earth is the planet that we are all currently living in, the place to stay. From that, we should know how to keep our planet healthy and safe and how to minimalize the negative impacts that can affect this earth’s condition. One of many things that we can do is to reduce the plastic usage. That includes the usage of water bottles. To manage and control the process of getting and keeping our earth healthy, we can do some simple things. We can no longer use water bottle by changing it with Tumbler. With doing that, we can reduce the usage of water bottles that can impact the earth because

its hard to decomposited. We can also use totebags to change our plastic bags usage to carry our stuff, in some way it is simpler, practical and more efficient. What did we do? We encouraged and challenged people to take environmental action pictures of them, such as using tumbler, throwing the garbage in the garbage bin or can, or supporting our Earth Day activities, and then post them to instagram. For that, people that have posted their pictures could come to our booth and stand to sign their names and exchanged it with goodie bags or handmade recycled notebook. For those who got more than 100 likes on instagram could exchange it with a tumblr for each post. These activities were encouragingly fun and held for 3 days. We also included a spontaneous parade by “Odong-Odong the College Ride” shouting, inform, and encourage people about Earth Day 2016 which people accepted and respected happily.

Top Tips to Save The Earth. Save Energy First, you can change your light bulbs. If every United States home swapped out one incandescent bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb, we’d save enough energy to light more than 3 MILLION homes each year. Another thing that you can do to save energy is live where you work. Leaving your car at home twice a week can cut greenhouse gas emissions by 1600 lbs each year.

Save water Did you know that being a vegetarian can save water? Well, go vegetarian once a week! It takes 2500 GALLONS of water to produce ONE POUND of beef. And also don’t forget to fix that leaky toilet, you could save 2000 GALLONS of water every single day.

reduce, reuse, recycle Reduce your trash and turn your scraps into earth-friendly compost! Try worm composting for speedy result. Hint : they love coffee! Don’t forget to reuse your shopping bag and recycle your electronics, because it is one of the fastest growing forms of waste in the United States.

IAAS LC UB : TAJI VILLAGE Malang – Saturday, April 2nd 2016 was the day of VCP (Village Concept Project) the one of programs in IAAS LC UB was held. VCP is one of the work plans from Project Department that will be run for one year. The purpose of this program is to develop the villager in education, entrepreneur, and environment issue. VCP 2016 is held at Taji Village, Malang. Taji Village located on the hills far from the city. The access to Taji Village from Malang City needs about 2 hours. This village with the people were far away from the “modern”word, this made the VCP 2016 committees chosen Taji Village as the target. Our program began with the opening ceremony that was held at Taji Village 02 by cutting the ribbon together with the elementary students, students’ parents, and IAAS LC UB members who attended as volunteers. This program received a great appreciation from the people and students from the village. The children looked so happy and bright as they competed. The competitions was eating crackers, putting a nail into a bottle, drawing, and marbles relay with guessing the earth day pictures in English to learn about the earth and environment. Also in the end of competitions there are a presents as a reward for all the winners. All the elementary students competed and played happily, the students’

mothers with the entrepreneur team made a forum in a room to talk and share about the entrepreneur plans that will be done for a year that can develop the potential from the commodity in Taji Village.

Statement from Siyono S.pd as the headmaster of Taji 02 elementary school, “This program is really great and it is convenient with the purpose of this program which is sharing the knowledge with the people, and the most important is this program is not only a written work, but it has the realization and directly work at the field. I hope this program will be useful for Taji Village and it can acquaints Taji Village to many people so they know that Taji Village still needs help, especially for the school facilities”. So, as youth who care about the nation’s advancement, we have to bring the affects by starting to do little things for people from the village by sharing our knowledge. Make your knowledge and action bring the inspiration and solution for the people, share with them!

Rice-fish is an integrated farming system with a long history in the region. Asian farmers have been raising fish in the rice fields for 2,000 years, perhaps even longer, providing farm families with an important source of animal protein. Originally, wild fish bred naturally in the rice fields, and were harvested as opportunity provided. Over time, a variety of husbandry techniques evolved in many countries of the region.

But with increased population pressure, the advent of “high-yielding rice varieties, and the consequent emphasis of governments and researchers on high input rice monoculture, these traditional technologies have often been left behind. In particular, the heavy use of pesticides and herbicides, most of which are toxic to fish, has made fish culture impractical in many rice farming situations. Many farm families have been deprived of this important

AGRI-TALK one not recognized by research planners in the past. In the past decade, considerable interest in rice-fish has arisen among researchers and, more important, farmers, as the pressure on farm ESOUK~S has increased. The need for more efficient and more sustainable farming systems has led to a variety of rice-fish farming systems in almost all countries of the Asian region. Many research institutions and donor agencies are recognizing theimportance of this development, and a number of important research activities are underway, in farmers fields and on research stations. For example, the Sukamandi Research Institute for Food Crops and the Indonesian Research Institute for Freshwater Fisheries are collaborating in an IDRC-sponsored project begun in 1987. The aim of the project is to raise the visibility of rice-fish farming to Indonesian farmers and government policymakers alike.

and other local carps, but tilapia, catfish, and several other species are commonly found in rice-fish farms. After a short period of up to 3 weeks, during which the rice plants become well established, the fish are let out of the refuge and allowed to forage through the rice fields. At harvest time, or if the fish must be temporarily removed while some potentially toxic chemical is applied to the field, the water is drained down and the fish are collected from the refuge. This simultaneous culture of fish in rice fields is called “minapadi” in Indonesia, and is the most interesting from a potential productivity point of view. Rotational (“palawidja ikan”) and sequential (“ikan penyalang”) systems of rice-fish intercropping are also found. The synergistic effects of rice and fish in the same field exemplify the advantages of an integrated approach to farming. One of the key benefits in this case is that fish recycle nutrienIsthrough feeding and depositing their fees in the submerged soil. Initial research results indicate that uptake of important nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen by the rice plants is significantly improved, in comparison with rice monoculture. Dr Achmad Fagi, the leader of the Indonesian project, found that “rice-fish culture with common carp actually increased the yields of commonly used rice varieties.” Farmers can in many cases get better rice yields plus additional food and cash income in the form of fish.

The research has on-station components, attempting to understand ecological and other interactions of rice-fish systems, and experiments in actual producing farms to understand and adapt to the real constraints and opporrunities faced by farmers. To begin a rice-fish operation, the farmer digs a small pond or trench about 0.5-l metre deep in a low-lying area of the rice field, to act as a deeper water “refuge” for the fish. The excavated soil is used to raise the “bunds” or banks of the field to ensure good water control (and in the process creating a raised area above flood level, often suitable for planting other crops like vegetables and fruit trees). When the field is flooded by irrigation water (or by rains, as in Northeast Thailand) rice is planted as usual. Soon after, however, small fish fingerlings are introduced. In Indonesia, the most frequently used fish are common carp (Cuprinus carpio) source : http://www.mivecblog.com

THE KHAN ACADEMY

The Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization that provides free video tutorials and interactive exercises. The Academy’s declared mission is “changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere.”

The lessons were conceived primarily for self-education but are also suitable for use in the classroom. The tutorials are informal in style and organized for building knowledge one concept or lesson at a time. Many lessons are delivered as electronic blackboard talks by someone with an apparent enthusiasm for the topic. Khan Academy website users can maintain records of their progress. Through the website, teachers can also monitor the progress of students who are using the site. In pilot experiments, schools are using a concept called “flipping the classroom,” which involves students watching the Khan Academy lectures at home and then using classroom time for exercise and testing. In this model, the teacher’s role is changed from lecturer to tutor and progress monitor. Salman Khan, a hedge fund manager, created the first video to help his young cousin with her math. Khan, who has three degrees from MIT and an MBA from Harvard, found he was able to create short, informal lessons very quickly (he used Yahoo’s Doodle notepad). Encouraged by his own progress and, very soon, a large YouTube following, Khan quit his hedge fund job and started the Academy. Bill Gates discovered the site as a source of learning for his son and began to offer the financial support of his charitable foundation. Today, supported further with contributions from Google and others, the Khan Academy has a dedicated professional staff headed by the founder and a growing number of volunteers who lend their expertise to create lessons in new subject areas. The Khan Academy can be seen as one of the best publicized and most promising examples of the power of the Internet to educate and to transform traditional education. As of March 2012, the Academy offered over 3,000 short videos on a wide range of subjects -- a great many on mathematics and the sciences but also including, for example, economics and art history. According to the Khan Academy’s website (also as of March 2012), it has delivered over 132,909,653 lessons. source : http://www.whatis.techtarget.com

HALAL SLAUGHTER PRACTICE. The issue of halal meat is one of importance in Islam, however in recent times with the advent of modernisation Muslims have gone away from tradition methods of slaughtering. This has now caused much confusion, with differing opinions as to what is considered halal meat. When there is confusion on any Islamic matter, we should always refer back to Allah and His Messenger, as Allah (swt) says

So it is common knowledge that Muslims only eat or drink that which is halal, to the point even the disbelievers (kuffar) have come to know that alcohol and pork is prohibited for a Muslim. As this is one of the topics known by necessity; Many food types are halal in their original state such as fruits, vegetables, and sea food, other food type such as meat from chicken, sheep or cattle are only lawful if killed or slaughtered in the right manner.

(And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger Islamic law requires that ani[Surah An Nisa’ 4:59] mals intended for human consumption be slain in a certain There are numerous verses manner. The conditions for (ayaat) and prophetic narra- Halal slaughter can be summations (ahadith) commanding rized as follows: Muslims to eat that which is lawful (halal) and to leave that The animal to be slaughtered which is unlawful (haram). Al- must be from the categories lah (swt) says in the Qur’an that are permitted for Muslims to eat. O mankind! Eat of that which The animal must be alive at the is lawful and good on the earth time of slaughter. [Surah Al Baqarah 2:168] No electric shock, bullet or any O you who believe! Eat of the other means should be used lawful things that We have before slaughtering. Using any provided you with [Surah Al such method may lead to the Baqarah 2:172] death of the animal before it is cut. Islam prohibits Muslims They ask you (O Muhammad from eating any meat coming SAW) what is lawful for them from an animal that is dead (as food). Say: “Lawful unto before slaughter. Muslims are you are At-Tayyibaat (all kind also advised to avoid eating of Halal foods) [Surah Al anything doubtful. Maidah 5:4]

21

•The animal must be slaughtered by the use of a sharp knife. The knife must not kill due to its weight. If it kills due to the impact the meat may not be permissible. The windpipe (throat), foodtract (oesophagus) and the two jugular veins must be cut. The slaughtering must be done in one stroke without lifting the knife. The knife should not be placed and lifted when slaughtering the animal. Slaughtering must be done by a sane adult Muslim. Animals slaughtered by a Non Muslim will not be Halal. The name of Allah must be invoked (mentioned) at the time of slaughtering by saying: Bismillah Allahu Akbar. (In the Name of Allah; Allah is the Greatest.) If at the time of slaughtering the name of anyone else other than Allah is invoked (i.e. animal sacrificed for him/her), then the meat becomes Haram “unlawful.” If a Muslim forgets to invoke the name of Allah at the time of slaughtering, the meat will remain Halal. However, if he intentionally does not invoke the name of Allah, the meat becomes Haram. The head of the animal must not be cut off during slaughtering but later after the animal is

completely dead, even the knife should not go deep into the spinal cord. Skinning or cutting any part of the animal is not allowed before the animal is completely dead. Slaughtering must be made in the neck from the front (chest) to the back. The slaughtering must be done manually not by a machine, as one of the conditions is the intention, which is not found in a machine. The slaughtering should not be done on a production line where pigs are slaughtered. Any instrument used for slaughtering pigs should not be used in the Halal slaughtering. Customary and Desirable Practices When Slaughtering Water should be offered to the animal before slaughter, and it should not be slaughtered when hungry. The knife should be hidden from the animal, and slaughtering should be done out of sight of other animals waiting to be slaughtered. Animals should be killed in a comfortable way. Unnecessary suffering to them must be avoided. The knife should be re-sharpened before slaughter.

According to fresh scientific opinion, halal — the method of slaughter that kills the animal with a deep cut across the neck — produces meat that’s more tender, stays fresh longer, and is less painful to the animal Dr V K Modi, head of department of meat technology at the Central Food Technology Research Institute in Mysore, says the halal method is effective in draining out most of the blood from a slaughtered animal, which is vital if its meat is to be soft Halal involves a swipe with a sharp blade across the animal’s neck, severing the windpipe, jugular vein and carotid artery. Contrary to popular belief, Dr Modi, who trains butchers in the art of slaughtering at the institute’s abattoir, says evidence suggests that animals slaughtered through jhatka suffer more trauma than those killed by halal. “The less an animal struggles, the better the meat. When animals face trauma,

Storage, Processing and Transport of Halal Meat Meat chilled or frozen for export to Muslims should be stored in separate cold stores other than those in which pork or other non-Halal meat is stored. Meat minced or processed for Muslims should not be minced in the same machines used to mince pork or other non-Halal meat.

22

the glycogen content in their muscles is activated, leaving the meat tough. Stored glycogen is the agent that leads to rigor mortis (or, stiffening of muscles on death),” Dr Modi says. “Halal is considered healthier because after slaughter, blood is drained from the animal’s arteries, ejecting most toxins because the heart continues to pump for a few seconds after slaughter Islamic scholar Maulana Wahiuddin Khan argues that the Islamic code of slaughter doesn’t approve of stunning. “According to Islam, the purpose of slaughtering is to release all blood from the animal’s body, leaving no room for growth of micro-organisms. When stunned, only a part of its blood is released.” After the animal being slaughtered ,they may appear to struggle and kick but that’s due to the contraction and relaxation of muscles deficient in blood rather than pain.
