Editorial

DEAR IAKS MEMBERS AND SB READERS, Sports architecture emerges from two of the most powerful social forces in contemporary life: play and design. Public interest in sport (both as a participant and spectator) and the formal ambitions of much contemporary sports architecture give these projects attendant presence in our communities. The buildings and grounds that house sporting and recreational activities are often defining features of the urban landscape in cities large and small. The projects in this edition of “sb” all have qualities worthy of a closer look, whether in terms of novel siting, exciting material choices, or ambitious programmatic aims. The “La Doce” sports ground and pavilion in Mexico demonstrates a remarkably light touch in a challenging urban site. This mix of soccer pitch, basketball court, and spaces for other activities is as playful as the games played in it, using color and bold graphics to generate a sporting oasis in a dense, historically underserved low-rise neighborhood. A similar emphasis on community informs the training academy for the San Francisco Giants in the Dominican Republic. Self-consciously designed as a low-key project, the facility is an expression of the commitment of the team to the country and the players it produces. An organizing courtyard and the use of local limestone both link the facility to its geographical context and cultural traditions. The training complex that serves the first team of the Feyenoord football club in the Netherlands makes striking use of two materials: glass and corten steel. The public façade is composed of stretched rectangles (or parallelograms) of corten mesh, and the building is reserved and refined, as befitting a space dedicated to the premier players, coaches, and staff of the club. The Montigalà Stadium in Badalona, Spain is nestled into a site

sb 2/2019

defined by the surrounding apartment blocks. At this project modest in cost and scale, the pitch is sunken below grade, allowing the ground to blend in and enhancing the sense of intimacy for the spectators. The WWK Arena in Augsburg, Germany now features its long-delayed but originally designed façade. A lattice network of aluminum tubes totaling 36,000 meters in length wrap the arena. Interspersed among these are another 1,300 meters of LED-illuminated Plexiglas “light tubes.” Finally, the Olympic Sports Center in Shuzhou, China crisply rendered in a palette of whites and grays, also features a roofing system of a single-skin cable network construction. This construction system generates sweeping parabolas hung from inverted V-shaped elements to span the large sport buildings. How to design and run Olympic venues in legacy? The whitepaper in this edition will share how balancing community use and commercial opportunity has been the golden thread leading to three London 2012 legacy venues being successful exemplars of well-executed legacy. In all of these projects there is much to admire, and the trend they describe, of ever finer formal and programmatic development in stadia and arena construction, is one to celebrate. The global spread of these projects is a reminder to us (in case we needed it!) of the international scope of sports architecture – one that spans the various boundaries that otherwise often define our daily lives. This is all for the good.

STRONG DEMAND FOR FSB MORE THAN 80 PER CENT OF THE EXHIBITION AREA ALREADY RESERVED – PRESTIGIOUS KEY ACCOUNTS HAVE REGISTERED EARLY Six months before FSB 2019 opens, all the indicators point to a successful year for the International Trade Fair for Public Space, Sports and Leisure Facilities. More than 80 per cent of the exhibition area is already reserved and almost all the national and international industry players have confirmed that they will be attending the event. In total, more than 630 companies from over 45 countries are expected to gather in Cologne, Germany between 5 and 8 November 2019.

8

As the world’s most important marketplace for sports and leisure facilities, FSB gives all the market players an excellent overview of new technologies, product innovations, process optimisations and visionary concepts, making it a key source of inspiration for the design of tomorrow’s urban living environments. “The early registrations of international key players from all segments clearly shows that the further development of the trade fair concept meets the market’s needs. At the same time, it is a clear statement by the participating sectors in support of FSB as the world’s leading trade fair for public space, sports and leisure facilities,” says Matthias Pollmann, Vice President Trade Fair Management at Koelnmesse GmbH. Rounding off FSB is the extensive, nationally and internationally oriented event programme for industry professionals – and above all the 2019 International IAKS Congress, which is hosted every two years as a co-located event with the trade fair.

FSB will from now on be staged in halls 7, 9 and 10 of the Cologne fair grounds. Presented in hall 7, directly adjacent to the swimming pool themed areas at the co-located event aquanale, the public space/playground equipment area is an important and complementary segment for operators of both public swimming and leisure pool facilities and water parks. Halls 9 and 10 will focus on all types of sports surfaces, leisure facilities, sports equipment and sports venues. The layout of the halls for the trade fair duo of FSB and aquanale will again be based on the successful “themed halls” concept in 2019. This concept allows synergies and potential for cooperation between companies to be harnessed even more readily and additional business networks to be established at both national and international level. This represents significant added value for the national and international trade visitors who travel to Cologne to assess the offerings on display at close hand.

FSB and aquanale have worked together to redefine the core segments at the leading industry events and thereby set the course for a successful future in the long term. Starting in 2019, the FSB pool segment will be integrated into aquanale and condensed into a single hall as part of the systematic further development of the themed worlds concept introduced in 2013. This allows exhibitors to target their communication with national and international audiences even more closely.

In the field of amenity areas and playground equipment, FSB will once again be working closely with its trusted partners Bundesverband für Spielplatzgeräte- und Freizeitanlagen-Hersteller (BSFH/Federal Association of Playground Equipment and Leisure Facilities Manufacturers) in the playground equipment segment and the trade journal STADTundRAUM in the amenity areas segment. In collaboration, FSB and STADTundRAUM will present workshops, congress themes, the renowned Planner Forum, and an sb 2/2019

attractive special event focused on current issues such as mobility, urban planning and development, the development of urban neighbourhoods, multigenerational communities, accessibility and areas for exercise and recre ation. The BSFH will again focus its trade fair appearance on the socially relevant topic “playgrounds as areas for physical activity”. A programme of talks and workshops on this theme is planned, and recent findings on planning and

financing spaces for physical activity in schools and day-care centres will be presented. The association is partnering with the educational association didacta to present this issue. Highlighting the issue of sustainability, the RECYCLING Forum will mark its debut at FSB 2019. It will focus on the life-cycle perspective of artificial surfaces as part of a special event, a forum and an action area. www.fsb-cologne.com

RESPECTFUL APPROACH CONSTRUCTION OF NEW MULTIPURPOSE SPORTS ARENA IN MUNICH OLYMPIC PARK, GERMANY The Bavarian capital city of Munich, FC Bayern Basketball, SAP and Red Bull have jointly presented the winning design for the new multipurpose sports arena to be built on the site of the former Olympic velodrome in Munich Olympic Park. The contract for building the arena has been awarded to 3XN Architects of Copenhagen, Denmark, together with LATZ+PARTNER, a German landscape and urban planning firm. The sports arena, with match seating of up to 11,500, will be the future home of German ice hockey champions Munich Red Bulls and German basketball champions FC Bayern Munich. To improve the local sports infrastructure for schools, amateur clubs and young talents, three additional canopied ice rinks will be built next to the sports arena as training facilities and for recreational use. Therefore, a comprehensive agreement on guaranteed opening times for the ice rinks has been signed with the City of Munich. The owner of the project is Red Bull Stadion München GmbH. Separate oval structure The new sports arena is a separate oval structure that naturally and respectfully melds with the world-famous Olympic Park with its many iconic structures. This impression is enhanced by the green roof and vertical façade structure. The façade is dominated by vertical fins swinging upwards over the glass-panelled entrances which are thus beautifully accentuated. The training areas are partially underground and modelled to form a green hill, taking up the topography and enabling a coherent continuation of the pathways and landscape design of the Olympic Park. 16

“We are delighted to be able design the new multipurpose sports arena at the Olympic Park in Munich, which will be the fourth arena project for 3XN Architects. It’s a great opportunity to become part of the inspiring, historic architecture of the park. During the design process, we constantly thought about the park’s original design and asked ourselves how Günter Behnisch would have approached the task. It was important to us to create a flexible, multipurpose arena with a strong identity while respecting the history and vision of the original Olympic Park and fitting in quite naturally. We want to create the perfect backdrop for a fantastic fan experience,” says Jan Ammundsen, 3XN Architects’ Head of Design. Inauguration planned for late summer 2021 The ground-breaking ceremony is planned for the coming winter, provided the construction permit and building preparations are completed on time. Inauguration of the new sports arena is planned for late summer 2021. Utilising the arena’s full organisational capacity, its two sb 2/2019

principal future occupants, FC Bayern Munich’s Basketball division and the Munich Red Bulls, can each play up to 40 matches per year. And there is additional capacity for up to 20 other matches and sports events as well as 20 sports-related events. The gross floor area of the new arena will be 62,500 m². 220 parking spaces have been planned in the sports arena’s underground car park, and 4,000 parking spaces are additionally available in the

Olympic Park’s “Parkharfe” car park. Spectator capacity has been put at 11,500, including roughly 1,000 business seats. Eleven VIP boxes are expected to provide 156 seats. The new building will also contain fan shops and office and conference rooms. www.3xn.com www.latzundpartner.de

A NEW SQUARE FOR PISA ENHANCEMENT OF “ARENA GARIBALDI – STADIO ROMEO ANCONETANI” IN PISA The new stadium will be built on the site occupied by the existing structure in a setting which is sensitive to its historic associations. The new arena will be only two hundred metres from the Piazza dei Miracoli and will be capable of generating a complex which is strongly connected with the locality, exploiting its potential to the full while at the same time creating new types of public space. The architectural intention is thus to define a “new landscape” establishing strong synergies with its context rather than creating a self-contained object of “design”. The whole stadium will indeed incorporate a higher-level pedestrian space in the form of a ring, a raised green square which will be used to manage the system of flows of people to and from the different sectors of the stadium and the related external security areas. The lower part can house a variety of different activities (such as shops and service facilities, a café-restaurant, the Pisa football club exhibition and a public car park). The sports complex will have a capacity of 16,800 seats, all of which will be under cover and divided into four sectors. What is currently the main stand will be renovated 18

and maintained, while the east, north and south stands will be completely rebuilt. The height of the whole stadium has been kept as low as possible in order to maintain harmonic proportions with the existing main stand, while minimising the stadium’s impact on the city skyline. The stadium roof itself has been designed to be extremely light. The external wall covering has been conceived as a series of different geometrical patterns in ETFE using shades of colours tending towards white in order to create a generally ethereal and luminous atmosphere. www.iotti-pavarani.com sb 2/2019

RETRACTABLE ROOF BALLPARK IN HOKKAIDO, JAPAN The working group of Osaka based NH Foods company, the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters Baseball Club, and the Hokkaido Ballpark Corporation have conducted different studies on building a new ballpark since the proposed construction site was decided in March 2018. Close to the lake at the Kitahiroshima Sports Park located in Kyoei, Kitahiroshima on the Hokkaido island, a new ballpark is to be developed by March 2023. Obayashi Corporation from Tokyo and HKS from Dallas, Texas are teaming up. The building area will comprise 50,000 m² and the stadium will offer a capacity for 35,000 spectators. The structure will consist of reinforced concrete and steel. Four stories will lie above ground while one will lie below.

A retractable roof system will enable to realize a natural grass field. The signature glass wall will foster an overwhelming sense of openness while the architecture is blending with the surrounding nature. Groundbreaking is scheduled for spring 2020 and the facility is to be completed by the beginning of 2023.

CITY OF VIENNA UPGRADES ITS CIRCULAR SPORTS HALLS GENERAL OVERHAUL WITH EXTRA VALUE BY AUTUMN 2020 Under a sports development plan, the City of Vienna is modernising its six circular sports halls. The hall in Steigenteschgasse with a capacity of 500 spectators, which is used among other things by the Vienna Timberwolves basketball team, Vienna’s weightlifting association and the judokas of WAT Stadlau, is piloting the project. “A modernisation project with extra value,” says a delighted Harald Fux whose Raumkunst firm won the competition. The aim of the radical conversion, refurbishment and replacement measures is to not only undertake the urgently needed technical improvements, but also give the hall the appearance of a modern sports and events hall and make it a sports centre visible from afar with identity-imparting features. A new envelope capable of performing several tasks (protection, ventilation, greater headroom in the interior, local landmark) is required for technical reasons. The hall’s centrepiece is the playing area. The installation of impact walls creates a standard arena of 20 x 40 m, which are the regulation dimensions for handball matches. After renovation, competitions in other sports such as basketball, volleyball and badminton can be held. This gives the hall clear programming as a ball sports hall. The clearance of 9.20 m creates a playing area suitable in the long term for national events and training under competition conditions. The division of the playing area into a triple hall by partition curtains for school games is being retained. The gymnastics area with the most important equipment for 20

implementation of the curriculum is accommodated on the gallery level. The spectator stand, changing rooms and other structures are to be retained as far as possible, thus eliminating the need for time-consuming and expensive conversion. The planned refurbishment measures include the upgrade of the building fabric, the structural improvement of the load-bearing frame, the improvement and renewal of the building services, the improvement of usage, and the installation of a barrier-free toilet. Open-space design The surrounding grounds were inexpensively structured with waterbound surfaces in various shades of grey. Serving as an exercise zone, a multifunctional wall increasing in height from the front to the rear lines the route to the spectator entrance. This wall is equipped not only with various seating elements, but also parkour features and boulder grips for a variety of forms of exercise and usage. A general overhaul with extra value: key components like the envelope and building services are being fully sb 2/2019

replaced and are extending the useful life close to that of a new building. Thanks to modernisation, energy consumption will be cut by a third. The hall, for whose upgrade a grant of EUR 5.4 million net was approved by the city council, will open in autumn 2020. Customised colour scheme Following the example of the Steigenteschgasse circular sports hall, Vienna’s other five circular sports halls will be refurbished in the coming years. Each is to be given its

own identity with a simple colour scheme. The hall in Steigenteschgasse, for example, will be essentially red. This means that, in addition to the red infill panels in the envelope, red will also dominate in the interior. This way, each hall will gain its “own” colour. The population could be consulted about the choice of colour and select “its” colour from a number of suggestions.

BEST PRACTICES IN LEGACY FIRST IAKS UK SPRING EVENT GATHERED UK CLIENTS, OPERATORS AND DESIGNERS More than 70 clients, operators and designers converged on the IAKS UK Spring Event on 2 April to discuss the development of community sports facilities, using the backdrop of the venues in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games. In his opening remarks IAKS President Dr Stefan Kannewischer introduced the IAKS Future Trends 2020. Populous Senior Principal and IAKS Executive Board member Tom Jones was the organizer and moderator of the event. Keynote speaker Charles Johnston (Sport England) explained the involvement and investment of Sport England in the Olympic Park, which was restricted to the legacy functions. He laid out the engagement of Sport England to make cities more active by increasing the “walkability” of urban areas. The case study of Orford Jubilee Park in Warrington, a multifunctional leisure / community centre, shows that sports and non-sports activities are combined with significant economic and frequency improvements. Edward Fane and Nina Mehmi (London Legacy Development Corporation) led through the exciting history of the Olympic Park from an unattractive industrial area to the Olympic Games venue and current legacy use. The transformation from Olympic Games to legacy use required both changes in infrastructure and convincing the neighbourhood. There are still many exciting real estate developments ahead until 2030. The London 2012 Olympic Games obviously transformed Eastern London into a place of better use. Lee Valley Regional Park Authority Chief Executive Shaun Dawson introduced his organization that has transformed Lee Valley over 50 years. The 4,000 ha estate goes far beyond the Olympic Park. The organization currently operates three legacy venues: Lee Valley White Water Centre, Lee Valley VeloPark and Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre. He pointed out the challenges in the 22

transformation to legacy operations and the amendments that had to be made to the original legacy concept. Populous Senior Principal Tom Jones explained the sports venue masterplan of the Olympic Park in London. Only some of the sports venues in the Olympic Park were permanent, the temporary venues being removed after the Olympic Games, and the landscape was turned into a green park after the Olympic Games. Comparing the London masterplan to those of future Olympic Games in Tokyo and Paris, the intentions and approaches vary significantly between Olympic cities. The delegates visited the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre as well as the Lee Valley VeloPark and then enjoyed lunch at the Timber Lodge which was built post-Olympics as a social meeting point in the park. Next was a visit to the lively Copper Box Arena which was at that moment frequented by pupils playing a handball tournament on three pitches. The group continued to the spectacular London Aquatics Centre where world-class diver Tom Daley performed an open training session. The gallery of the Aquatics Centre with its wonderful view of the pool hall was the perfect spot for the next speeches. government foundation which gives grants to innovative projects. This approach is a source of ground-breaking sports and leisure facilities in Denmark, especially sports halls and outdoor areas. This is not only based on financing, but also on the intensive consulting process by the foundation. The “Danish project approach” asks why and what should be achieved with the project and involves potential users from the very beginning (social inclusion). Danish architect Flemming Overgaard (Keingart Architects) presented exciting projects and how innovation was generated. These projects have always an openness in their functionality to attract as many users as possible, even with different intentions of activity. Greenwich Leisure Limited Regional Director Tony Wallace introduced his social enterprise which operates 260 facilities across UK, among others the London Aquatics Centre and the Copper Box Arena. He gave interesting insights into the daily operations of these facilities. Mike Hall and Irina Korneychuk (FaulknerBrowns Architects) rounded up this exciting day with their latest

works. The case study of the community sports centre in Newcastle showed how to turn cities into more active places. In his closing remarks IAKS President Dr Stefan Kannewischer thanked the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, the London Legacy Development Corporation and the Greenwich Leisure Limited for their cooperation and tremendous support in making this event happen. The seminars and visits to buildings of this event were much appreciated by the delegates, and the networking reception at the end of the day was no exception. IAKS achieved its goal of presenting business-like, know-how exchanging events and creating neutral networking opportunities. The group therefore showed great interest in the upcoming events, such as the IAKS study trip to Hamburg (27 to 28 May) and the IAKS Congress in Cologne (5 to 8 November 2019).

Eight years after the stadium’s official opening, the WWK Arena has been given the exterior façade originally planned by Augsburg architects Bernhard & Kögl. On three levels, the aluminium structure wraps itself nest-like around the stadium. Using LED technology, special luminaires have brought the creative idea of an illuminated façade to fruition. In 2016, after years of political wrangling bet ween the city and the club, the WWK Insurance Group purchased the rights to the name of the stadium in Augsburg, thus demonstrating its commitment as the main sponsor of Bundes liga club FC Augsburg. In connection with this move, the basic ideas for the façade, which were dreamed up back in 2008 by B&K, were realised in cooperation with Zumtobel Lighting, which has put the latest innovative LED technology to use in creating a work of art that can be illuminated in different ways. Around 21 km of aluminium tubes and 170 so-called light tubes are woven around the stand structure of the 31,000-seat stadium. The new, modern and climate-neutral stadium, which opened in September 2009, is the home ground of Bundesliga club FC Augsburg and is also used as a venue for matches of the women’s and men’s national football teams. The development and production of this unique and impressive lighting solution brought together a network of specialists and partners, who cooperated with the expertise of the “Atelier

of Light” in the fields of customised structures, lighting planning and visualisation. Entangling the opposing team The complex façade structure is composed of a combination of interwoven aluminium and light tubes, which, following the architects‘ idea are interwoven and symbolise the will to “entangle” the opposing team. The two elements are intertwined around the stadium on three levels in an arrangement reminiscent of Mikado sticks. The varying distances between the tubes in clustered arrangements creates a sense of depth and a random pattern for the viewer. Zumtobel also found fellow players during this project: Livebau Solution GmbH, Exuma GmbH and engineering office Dr. Ondra. A lively game was played with Heinz Fritz GmbH, which faced a number of challenges posed by the tough structural demands of the oversized, diffuse PMMA tube of the luminaire. These were outstandingly mastered in smooth interplay with Zumtobel and the architects. sb 2/2019

For this purpose, Zumtobel designed special fluorescent tubes that have the same dimensions as the aluminium tubes and are part of the eye-catching faรงade structure. These 8-metre-long light tubes are fitted with IP67 RGB LED light strips 20 centimetres in diameter. Another challenge in the design of the special luminaires was that the tubes are integrated into the faรงade as structural load-bearing elements requiring approval by the building authorities. 26

Highlighting the faรงade structure The lighting concept is complemented by 36 Contrast 2 LED L RGB spotlights from Thorn, another Zumtobel Group brand, mounted on existing lighting columns around the stadium. The compact and powerful LED spotlights assist the light tubes in illuminating the impressive stadium faรงade and serve as basic lighting for the faรงade structure. Since the spotlights also cover the entire RGB colour spectrum, they reinforce the chosen sb 2/2019

colour scheme while highlighting the façade structure at the same time, thus more clearly emphasising the 3-dimensional character of the overall structure. The light tubes and column lighting are controlled via a DMX server. Each tube and each spotlight can be controlled separately. The resulting adjustment of the colour and intensity of the individual luminaires yields a highly impressive interaction between the façade and column lights. The façade can be illuminated in the colours red, green and white – i.e. FC Augsburg’s club colours – as well as any number of other colour combinations to suit the character of the event. Total annual energy consumption comes to a very modest EUR 10,000. The cost price 28

of the façade is around a twelfth of that of the Allianz Arena in Munich. The WWK Arena is also the world’s first carbon-emission-free football stadium. The outcome is a new landmark at Augsburg’s southern town gate and an icon for the club, the city and the region of Swabia. Innovative energy system In cooperation with Lechwerke AG and Stadtwerke Augsburg utility company, an innovative energy system was designed which also includes the use of renewable resources. This energy concept reduces annual operating costs for heating and cooling the WWK Arena by 10% (compared to conventional oil or gas heating). The Olympic Sports Center in Suzhou, built to a design by Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp), has opened in February 2019. In a 60 hectare publicly accessible landscape park, a stadium, training and leisure pool, indoor arena, shopping center and extensive sports facilities for the surrounding residential areas have been completed. For the very first time in China, a single-skin cable network roof construction has been used to cover the large sports buildings. With their curved roofs, the buildings form a distinct ensemble and a new center of that part of the city. Suzhou is known in China as a garden city. Nine of its historic gardens have been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. Unsurprisingly, the design of the Olympic Sports Center took its cue from these Chinese landscape gardens. The result is a lively sports and citizens’ park with a pleasing mixture of functions, including four large buildings amongst green spaces and water

features: the stadium with a capacity of 45,000 and a span of 250 meters, the aquatics center with 3,000 seats, the indoor arena with 13,000 seats, and the shopping center. To the south the park opens out to the Xietang River and, along winding pathways, provides various vistas across waterways, the architecture, and landscape.

Like peninsulas The design of the building ensemble is deliberately minimalist in style and the individual buildings appear restrained despite their size. The 12 meter high po diums project into the parkland like peninsulas, and are accessed from the road. The podiums and the façades feature horizontal lines in light natural stone and aluminum panels that are sculpted like a relief. In their construction the buildings are uniformly developed. For the first time in China, a single-skin cable network roof construction has been used to cover the large sports buildings. This results in boldly sweeping paraboloid shells that rest on V-shaped supports and can be seen not just in the immediate neighborhood but also from 32

further afield. The stadium roof is covered by a PTFE membrane, whereas the roofs of the aquatics center and indoor arena are finished with metal sheets consisting of a durable aluminum/magnesium/manganese alloy. Multifaceted use concept A shopping center with offices and a hotel supplements the three sports buildings, and contributes to the liveliness of the entire site. The park area contains a wide range of open sports facilities for football, tennis, and other ball sports that can be hired privately. Thanks to this multifaceted use concept, the Olympic Sports Center has quickly become a template for the design of other sports facilities in China and has become an attractive neighborhood center. sb 2/2019

MIXED-USE COURT SERVES AS A NEIGHBOURHOOD HUB “LA DOCE” SPORTS GROUND AND PAVILION IN VALLE DE CHALCO “La Doce” is not only a place for soccer, but also a meeting place for the neighbourhood. All Arquitectura has created an urban landmark in the socially deprived district of Valle de Chalco in Mexico. The open pavilion houses an administrative area and rooms for additional sports like yoga, dancing, boxing, and chess. The vividly coloured court forges a link between the adjacent streets. The collaborative project is based on a network for change that arises from the need to develop quality public spaces in marginalised areas in various cities around the world. The stakeholders involved believe that football is a social construct, an activity that encourages contact through the game, that does not distinguish social classes, and enables participants to be integrated in a team, as part of something bigger.

“La Doce“ starts from the mission and vision of “love.fútbol”. This non-profit organisation is pursuing a project which, for the last 20 years, has enabled, through the management and sponsorship of various entities, the restoration and recovery of disused sports fields in marginalised areas of cities worldwide, allowing the reintegration of quality public space into the communities where they operate. sb 2/2019

The work scheme at “La Doce” runs under three premises: the retrieval of an abandoned sports area; the integration of the community into the design and building process (through volunteers); and the aim to erect a landmark for the community. From this idea arises the collaboration between “love. fútbol” as the promoter and All Arquitectura as the designer and contractor. This alliance and sponsorship of the English Premier League Team Manchester City marked the beginning of the project. As part of the process, the integration of local partners is fundamental for the work of love.fútbol. The civil association Natlik from Mexico has been included to act as the local contact in the community. sb 2/2019

Melting pot of indigenous groups The project is located in the municipality of Valle de Chalco, returning to the community a vital space located in one of the most marginalised areas and with one of the highest rates of violence on the outskirts of Mexico City. Valle de Chalco is the destination of many groups from all regions of the country. More than 20 indigenous groups have gathered here, and traditions and heritage have been essential as part of the design process so as to respect all the differences while stressing the similarities between all groups. The dormitory town reveals one of the most complex problems of contemporary cities: a dense web of roots that poses a challenge to the building of social identity and the relationship with the communal space itself. 35

„La Doce“ translates into collaboration, a coordinated effort and an alliance of designers, architects, artists, civil organisations and neighbours, who in a blend of ideas and social work contribute to a project that intercedes and tries to build community in a fractured social fabric. The planning and construction process was challenging. The district had a bad reputation for being insecure, and local gangs wanted to defend the place where they used to hang out. The team had to work on a tight schedule to meet the inauguration deadline. Following the paths of the people in the neighbourhood The project is conceived as two independent spaces that, beyond providing experiences in their own rights, 36

are linked through the activities they offer. A mixed-use court of 15 m x 25 m as a compositional axis is an essential part of the project oriented on a north-south orientation to allow greater use of it throughout the day. The colour is an allusion to the sponsor’s branding and institutional colours. The architects played with patterns and colour fades. Located between the streets Sur 11 and Sur 12, the intervening property opens onto both roads, allowing users to make use of the same space as a link, following the paths of the people in the surrounding area. It is an open space, and the court is locked during game time. The other areas bordering the intervention are open and are arranged in a straight line in the open pavilion. sb 2/2019

Pavilion for additional sports and gatherings An open pavilion ends at one of the edges of the court. Under a large roof, it brings together an administrative area, a storeroom, sanitary rooms and boxing area adjacent to an area of multiple uses that will permit the holding of workshops, classes and exhibitions at any time of day independently of the weather conditions. The open pavilion works as a versatile building where several other sports can be practised: boxing, chess, yoga, dancing. The rooms are used for conferences and community meetings. The pavilion incorporates the adjoining properties – an abandoned library and a vacant plot – with the intention of linking and integrating both properties in the project in the future. A concrete platform, a remnant of the original sb 2/2019

court, is used as a large public space where the outlook and experiences of the many ethnic groups inhabiting Valle de Chalco can be expressed through artistic performances. Local food vendors are delighted to have found a spot where they can sell their food and earn their living. Water storage by rainfall capture The design includes a large pervious surface that permits the seepage of rainwater and thus the replenishment of the historic Laguna de Xico. The lights along the court are powered by solar energy. The project responds to the ever-changing needs of a historically important area for the city and the Valle de MĂŠxico which through its people and its character are part of a periphery that is always present and indomitable, but always welcoming. 37

DESIGN DRIVEN BY CLIMATE FELIPE ALOU BASEBALL ACADEMY IN BOCA CHICA

Location Boca Chica, Dominican Republic Client/Operator The San Francisco Giants Architects jones I haydu One Arkansas Street, suite D2 US - San Francisco, CA 94107 www.joneshaydu.com Design team members J. Hulett Jones, Paul Haydu, Jonathan Bernard, Aaron Cleveland, Aaron Goldman Local architect of record JMF Arquitectos Author jones I haydu Photos Bruce Damonte Official opening June 2017

38

The Felipe Alou Baseball Academy designed by jones I haydu consists of three major leaguesize playing fields, batting tunnels, pitching mounds, and two substantial buildings. The athletic building contains the clubhouse, gymnasium, training room, offices, and conference rooms. The residential building serves as a residence hall for coaches and staff and up to 73 players. It features classrooms, a computer laboratory, dining hall, and recreational spaces. The San Francisco Giants have a long history in the Dominican Republic and wished to build a facility for their Latin American players that reflects their commitment to the country, and the players’ importance to their club. The academy serves as the headquarters of the Giants’ Latin American operations and as the educational training and player development home for the team’s international prospects. The academy is divided into two main parts: the athletic portion and the dormitory portion. The typical functional layout of multiple baseball diamonds is a “clover leaf” with home plates being at the center. With two existing fields in place and the new site adjacent, a third field was added to the clover leaf pattern.

Inspiration for the academy master plan was drawn from many places of learning, from colleges to monasteries. The goal was to provide a sense of place for the variety of activities, and, as such, the clover leaf allowed for two distinct “quads” for the buildings, separating the site into residential and athletic. The buildings then layout in a decidedly formal relationship with the diamonds. This formal relationship allows the buildings to have a background presence to the fields, while also allowing direct views and focus from the buildings to the diamonds. The full length of the north façade of the athletic building stretches along all three playing fields. Since the façade faces north, it allows for greater transparency. All rooms inside the sb 2/2019

uilding that do not need privacy get expansive views to b the fields. Circulation for the building is pushed to the exterior, along the north façade sheltered by an added layer of roof panels. At the very center of the length of the building is the large gymnasium with its double-height wall of glass. The thirty ePTFE fly roof panels that shade the athletic building are tilted slightly up to the east to catch the prevailing breeze. At the center of the building, the panels swell in height with the gymnasium. The Giants were clear in that they were not looking for “statement” architecture. They were fond of clean line aesthetic. As they began discussing their goals, the building took shape, responding to their program, the existing diamonds, and their values. There was a goal early on to address the climate. Many academies address the heat with small windows and shading elements on the façade. sb 2/2019

Running energy models of the building, it became clear that the orientation of the buildings, the room configuration, and the roof were the driving factor in heat gain. Located just 18 degrees north of the equator, the sun is directly overhead in the heat of the day. The athletic building is oriented along the east-west axis to minimize sun exposure at the façades. The buildings are all narrow, one room deep, to maximize cross ventilation. The fly roof panels, then, serve as the first line of defense from the tropical sun. They shade the entire building, and are lifted up above the building enough to allow breezes to clear the heat build-up. The design of the dormitory building takes its inspiration from the many public plazas in cities throughout the Dominican Republic and Latin America. The residential building is two stories, with all residences at the top level. 39

40

The classrooms and social spaces are at the ground level. The building’s massing was divided into three wings surrounding a shared courtyard, or plaza. The third side of the plaza is left open to focus on the main game field. The most active of the social spaces were located directly off of the plaza. The plaza, as night falls, becomes the center of activity on the campus.

the courtyard both at night and during the day. The recreation center is equipped with table tennis, football, board games, and a few lounge areas.

The goal of the courtyard was to mimic a public plaza and to provide just this kind of atmosphere for the players and coaches. All three edges of the courtyard have the highest-density activity. The outdoor lounge was inspired by the palapa establishments which are seen throughout the island. Leaving that wing of the building open at this level also allows for breezes to flow through

The upper level of the residential building can house up to 73 players, eight coaches, and a visiting scout. The open space between the wings of the building has the living quarters for the coaches’ apartment at one end. This allows the coaches to always keep an eye on activity at the plaza. All rooms have a direct view to the baseball diamonds.

The paving of the plaza is “coralina,” a limestone that is ubiquitous in the area and can be found on all of the buildings, streets, and plazas dating back to the Colonial era.

sb 2/2019

The shape and size of the wings were determined by the dorm room sizes, and a desire to allow for light and air at both ends of the rooms. The rooms all have views to the exterior, with views to the fields on one side, and views to the neighboring landscape on the other. High ceilings were a considered design move to facilitate the movement of hot air. Rooms are configured such that there is a division structurally through the middle, via a partial-height wall. This division provides a bit more intimacy in layout. Though each suite can have as many as eight players, the division cuts that number in half.

PLAYERS’ DAILY ROUTINE DEFINES THE DESIGN TRAINING COMPLEX FOR FOOTBALL CLUB FEYENOORD IN ROTTERDAM The ‘1908’ training complex for football club Feyenoord lies in the city of Rotterdam. Designed by MoederscheimMoonen Architects, the multifunctional complex is fully equipped to provide the first team of Feyenoord with a professional sporting environment on a day-to-day basis. The training complex has been designed exclusively for the first team of Feyenoord, the accompanying staff and the technical board. The building contains all the kinds of facilities a current professional football club requires. A large area of the building has been dedicated to the sports medicine facility and a performance research department for the first team players. This area is supported by several offices, an auditorium, restaurant, relaxation rooms, various wellness facilities and of course the changing rooms for the players and staff.

Daily routine as the primary design principal Architect Erik Moederscheim: “Prior to the design process, we carried out intensive research by visiting the facilities of various international professional clubs together with the people in charge at the Feyenoord club. We developed a programme that responds to the constraints of the site as well as meeting Feyenoord’s spatial requirements.“ Based on the visits and discussions, the architectural office took the chronology of the activities and the players’ daily routine as the most important criteria for arriving at sb 2/2019

an intuitive floor plan. The result is that the facilities are located in a logical place in the building, with the first team changing room as the heart of the building. From here, the players are close to the wellness area, sports medicine facilities, the players’ lounge, the corridor towards the outdoor pitches, and the central staircase leading to the restaurant above. Concentration and focus The interior is designed so as to create an environment that stimulates concentration and focus. For example, a lot of light colours and natural materials have been used. “The players and staff of Feyenoord spend a lot of time

there and carry a great responsibility for the club, so it is important that they feel at home and can work daily on improving their performance in a professional sporting environment,“ says the architect. As a result, spaces including the changing rooms and wellness are situated at the rear, where they have complete privacy, and the offices and sports medicine facilities are at the front, close to the pitches. Privacy and transparency The balance between privacy and transparency forms the basis of the clear design language of the architectural design. The glass façade gives the complex a contem-

porary aesthetic, and makes it possible for many of the spaces to have a direct view of the pitches. At the same time, the rear façade is designed as a shield of corten steel that continues onto the overhanging roof. This shield provides privacy from the public road and is the defining element in the design. NESTLING INTO THE SLOPE Location Badalona, Spain Client/Operator City of Badalona

The stand seating displays a variety of shades of blue. Monigalà Stadium in Badalona, designed by AIA Salazar-Navarro architects, has created a community focus for the residents of the nearby residential area.

Architect AIA Salazar Navarro Plaça Sant Pere, 3 ES-08003 Barcelona www.aia.cat

Badalona is an industrial town in Catalonia. It is situated about 10 kilometres north-east of Barcelona and extends along the Mediterranean coast.

Leading architects Albert Salazar, Joan Carles Navarro

Badalona’s municipal stadium is a building integrated within the slope and natural structure of the terrain, half-buried with practically no external presence and without façades or perimeter walls. It lies naturally within the topography of the terrain. This approach mitigates the building’s presence in the landscape and, at the same time, improves the complex’s thermal inertia.

With its austerity, functional design and a combination of different materials, the building stands elegantly and with an integrated outward impression. The stadium has a capacity of 4,170 spectators – which can be

extended to up to 12,000 – and a pitch measuring 105 × 68 m. The concrete prefabricated structure helped to reduce the budget and ensure compliance with delivery deadlines. The canopy has been constructed with a spatial mesh clad with aluminium panels. The final result is a building with ease of construction and control, and high-quality finishes and system optimization. The design of the facility seeks to maximise efficiency and includes including energy-saving systems and energy-generating devices. The stadium’s average consumption is low. The functional areas (such as changing rooms, offices, services and technical rooms) are half-buried beneath the stands, with very stable thermal conditions and an optimal natural ventilation system. sb 2/2019

CREATING THE PERFECT BLEND DESIGNING AND RUNNING OLYMPIC VENUES IN LEGACY

Author Photos

Shaun Dawson, Chief Executive of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, United Kingdom Lee Valley Regional Park Authority and Eleanor Bentall, England Hockey

London is generally held to be the best planned legacy from any Olympic Games – a million miles away from the sadly numerous examples around the world of grand unused sporting edifices from showpiece events like the Olympics. In this article Shaun Dawson will share how balancing community use and commercial opportunity has been the golden thread leading to the three London 2012 legacy venues for which he is responsible being popular and successful exemplars of well-executed legacy. As Chief Executive of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, I oversee an eclectic 26 mile, 10,000 acre (42 km / 4,000 ha) park which starts on the banks of the River Thames in a constantly changing area of east London, stretches through what is now Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and out to Hertfordshire. The Authority is an unusual beast. It was set up by an Act of Parliament 50 years ago when the Lee Valley was largely derelict, ignored and unloved – known as “London’s privy, workshop and backyard”. The Lee was London’s working river and the Valley home to railway sidings, rubbish dumps, gravel pits, sewage works and polluting industry. Over the last half century Lee Valley Regional Park Authority has, with partners, transformed this unloved corridor into glorious award-winning open spaces and world-class sports venues that now attract more than seven million visits a year. 48

We have always aimed high and operate with a community focused, commercially driven business ethos. Back in the 1970s we built Europe’s largest leisure centre and in the 1980s created Britain’s first swimming pool with a wave machine. While we were retiring our first generation of what had become outdated sports venues in the 1990s, we were developing a strategy for a “Zone of Sporting Excellence” in the Lee Valley. This included a VeloPark and a White Water Centre, with advanced plans for both developed in partnership with the sports’ National Governing Bodies. So when the idea emerged of London bidding for the 2012 Games, partly using our land in the Lower Lee Valley, we were enthusiastic partners. As owners of a quarter of the land on which the Olympic Park was planned and owning strategic land holdings nearby, we sb 2/2019

were able to contribute expertise and passion along with worked-up plans for two venues. And crucially, before the bid was written we were the obvious “legacy client” or eventual owner of three of the venues planned for our land – what would become Lee Valley VeloPark, Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, and Lee Valley White Water Centre.

and sufficient toilets, plus building in commercial potential. We worked on detailed business plans to ensure that these three venues were community assets which had community use first and foremost through their 25-year plus life span, but could host major events and generate commercial income and ensure sufficient income to guarantee their long-term future.

With this ownership came the responsibility – and pressure – to ensure that they would be successful in the long term. Our name would be above the door and we had a duty to make sure they worked from day one. This role made us the protector and advocate of their legacy. We were on the panels which selected architects, and made all key design decisions, championing the post-Games use throughout.

We now run three successful legacy venues. Financially, two make an operational surplus. We have outsourced their running to a Leisure Trust with the aim of increasing commercial development and lessening costs, while maintaining their focus on community sports activity. The three have different dynamics, visitor demographics and uses, but share the same nine ingredients for success apply:

We learned from other Olympic experiences by journeying to Athens, Barcelona, Sydney and Beijing plus examining how Commonwealth cities like Manchester and Melbourne successfully transformed post Games. While the Olympic designers were focused on 17 days of the greatest sport in the world, our attention was on postGames day-to-day essentials such as catering provision sb 2/2019

1 Have a long-term vision and philosophy as an owner to determine what the venues will be. Our business philosophy was clear from the outset – we are community focused and commercially driven. This twin approach placed community use at the heart of the three venues alongside a laser-like focus on commercial opportunities to guarantee their financial future. This means that while sport is still king, our venues have 49

hireable spaces built-in, are used as filming locations, host meetings and conferences and evolve to meet changing leisure trends. For example, a large area used for overlay during the Games at Lee Valley White Centre now hosts a huge inland beach with volleyball, beach football and an inflatable play park. None of these are linked to canoeing or rafting, but they broaden the venue’s demographic enormously. 2 Build in as much transformation as possible at the planning stage. London 2012 needed only a velodrome and BMX track, but our vision for the post-Games venue was a “Velo Park” where all four Olympic cycling disciplines would be available. Adding in a one-mile road circuit and five miles of mountain bike trails would have been impossible if it had not been factored in from the start. Similarly, we learnt from other white water centres that a second, gentler white water course would broaden our market and provide a sporting pathway for people new to canoeing. We led a consortium which raised GBP 6 million to create this and integrated it into the London 2012 design. 3 Getting venues right is difficult. Planning 25 years ahead is hard, do not expect to get everything right. 4 Expect to compromise. Major sports venues are almost always delivered through joint working and an array of stakeholders. It is natural to have tensions between a group made up of organisations with different agendas – the only way to deal with this is through compromise. 5 Be flexible, adapt and expect venues to change over time. We have added considerable infrastructure to Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, but only now are we poised 50

to maximise the entire potential of the site with further leisure development, taking advantage of a large development platform. 6 Prioritise the programme and business plan. We have achieved a blended programme with around 80% of activity reserved for schools, clubs and community, and the rest packed with a range of commercial activities such as private hires, teambuilding and corporate events. 7 Remove barriers to participation. Activities at our venues start at GBP 5 – and for disadvantaged groups our Community Access Fund can pay for travel and coaching. We have partnered with providers to run all-ability cycling and tennis programmes for wheelchair users, people with learning disabilities, sight impairments and mental health issues. We invested in 243 bikes, which means anyone can turn up and have a go, and visitors need no specialist equipment. 8 Bring back the magic of big events. We have hosted four World Cups, two World Championships and ten other major international events since London 2012. In 2022, Lee Valley VeloPark will make history becoming the only venue in the world to host an Olympics, World Championships and Commonwealth Games in the same sport. We work closely with our national governing bodies, international federations and commercial promoters and invest time, money and expertise in major events. 9 Embrace change. The market is continually evolving. Be prepared to face constant challenges of meeting customer demand, keeping audiences engaged, creating new products and pushing the boundaries of what is possible at each venue. sb 2/2019

SUPER BOWL 2019 EXCITING MATCH PLAYED ON FIELDTURF Location Author Photos

Atlanta, USA Darren Gill, Email: DGill@fieldturf.com, Mobile: +1 514 862 4094 FieldTurf, www.fieldturf.com

Super Bowl LIII took place at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the most recent NFL stadium to open and the latest to install FieldTurf. The facility showcases FieldTurf’s Revolution 360 system, perfectly named after the concept of completeness for its optimal durability, versatility and resilience. Installed in 2017, the field covers nearly 9,940 m² of surface area. After the 1994 Super Bowl XXVIII and 2000 Super Bowl XXXIV, this year’s game was the third Super Bowl to take place in Atlanta. In the 2018 final of the National Football League (NFL) in American Football, the team of the New England Patriots (AFC champion) was paired against the team of the Los Angeles Rams (NFC champion) on February 3, 2019. In a low-scoring game, the New England Patriots won the match 13:3 and thus their sixth Super Bowl. There are a number of curious facts associated with the playing field at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. For instance, there are over 700 million fibers in the field. The fibers measure 63 mm in height. The field’s infill weighs over 408,233 kilograms. 272,155 kilograms of sand and 52

136,077 kilograms of rubber granules are used. The field was manufactured locally in Calhoun, Georgia, a 90minute drive from the stadium. Unlike most FieldTurf installations, the field is “all-green” and the lines and logos are painted on to allow the professional football and soccer teams to share the facility. The Mercedes-Benz Stadium is home to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United FC, winner of the MLS Cup 2018. The venue has also hosted college football’s Peach Bowl, Celebration Bowl and Chickfil-A Kickoff Game.

FieldTurf in the Super Bowl Super Bowl LIII was the third Super Bowl to be played on FieldTurf. The others were Super Bowl XLVI at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and Super Bowl XL at Ford Field in Detroit. While the Rams play on grass at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Patriots – making a record 11th Super Bowl appearance – are no strangers to FieldTurf. The company’s relationship with New England dates back to 2004, when the surface was installed at the team’s indoor practice facility. Two years later, the Patriots installed FieldTurf at Gillette Stadium, and the surface has been part of New England’s historic run ever since. sb 2/2019

FieldTurf in the NFL In 2015, an SI.com ranking of the National Football League’s best and worst fields revealed that FieldTurf provides the best artificial surface in the NFL. All told, FieldTurf is installed at ten of the NFL’s 32 teams to provide superior high-performance surfaces with long-term durability and increased reliability. Among the current FieldTurf installations in the NFL, there are practice facilities for the teams of Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Washington Redskins. 53

YOU COULDN’T ASK FOR MORE MODERNISATION OF THE ESTADIO FÉLIX CAPRILES IN COCHABAMBA, BOLIVIA Location Author Photos

The Estadio Félix Capriles in Cochabamba is a multifunctional stadium with a great history. The stadium underwent a thorough upgrade on the occasion of the 2018 South American Games. Its future viability has thus been significantly improved, and the comprehensive redesign of the interior now makes it possible to hold international athletics events in front of 32,000 spectators in addition to football and concerts. The redesign of the athletic facilities, and particularly the installation of the eight-lane track, was the most important measure for the stadium’s future use. The existing substructure had worn out completely over the years, and the drainage barely worked any more. The existing running track had only six lanes, but eight continuous lanes are required for international meetings. Cochabamba is located at an altitude of 2,582 metres, making the Estadio Félix Capriles the tenth highest-altitude stadium in the world. Renovation imposed tough demands on man and material. 7,000 m² The entire surface of over 7,000 m² was given a new substructure, a new drainage system and asphalt complying with all the standards and has the gradients required for international competitions: a 0.8 per cent track crossfall from the outside inwards and 0.4 per cent radially in the sectors. 54

The special feature of the Regupol AG synthetic running track lies in its structure: the base course consists of sheets prefabricated in the factory and bonded to the asphalt on site. For the top course, EPDM granules are sprinkled into a layer of molten polyurethane. The result is a jointless sports surface with many advantages: the coating is extremely even, the running track is the same thickness at every point and its physical properties are the same throughout. In addition, installation using this process is fast and cost-effective – even in the world’s tenth highest-altitude stadium. The extension from six to eight lanes required for the staging of international competitions was achieved by demolishing boundary fences and concrete surfaces and subsequently adapting the height of the access areas. The blue The new running track in the Estadio Félix Capriles was designed by BSW Berleburger Schaumstoffwerk GmbH. sb 2/2019

The distinguishing feature is its typical shade of blue, a hallmark of the company since the renovation of Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. Backing up the globally recognised quality of Regupol as a material, BSW also contributed its international network. Experienced installers from Bad Berleburg, together with 15 specialists from the contracted construction company Estrutec S.R.L. from Cochabamba, carried out the entire installation in just 23 days. The long-standing BSW partner office HEG Sports Facilities from Costa Rica acted as the local consultant and coordinator. The new Estadio Félix Capriles passed its baptism of fire with flying colours during the „Cochabamba 2018“ 11th South American Games. Now it is available not only to three football clubs and for concerts, but also for athletics – for both training and competition. You couldn’t ask for more. sb 2/2019

A BALL CATCHER BUT NOT AN EYE CATCHER WIRE MESHES ALLOW TO CREATE VIRTUALLY INVISIBLE BALL STOP FENCES Locations Lausanne and Riaz, Switzerland Author Michael Offermann Photos Jakob AG, Dorfstraße 34, CH-3555 Trubschachen, www.jakob.com

Usually, ball stop fences are rather mundane pieces of architecture. Wire meshes, however, do not force designers and architects of sports grounds to compromise on the design. Several projects in Switzerland demonstrate the great potential of stainless steel meshes in the construction of sports grounds. La Tuilière is Lausanne’s newest sports ground and a football paradise. Nine playing fields with natural and artificial turf provide perfect training conditions to the city’s clubs. The elegant and unobtrusive ball stop netting helps to create the impression of a landscape park without borders. On the sports ground of the high school in Riaz, on the other hand, the ball stop fence creates a canvas for the spectacular mountain scenery of La Gruyère. In both cases, the fences rely on the inox wire mesh Webnet by Jakob Rope Systems.

unobtrusive railings in staircases or discreet yet reliable safety nets. Projects such as those in Lausanne or Riaz now demonstrate that the mesh’s high translucency and rigidity also provides new opportunities in designing sports grounds.

The use of inox wire meshes as ball stop nets provides many advantages. Besides their minimalist aesthetics, and in contrast to conventional trellis fences, they emit almost no noise when a ball hits the net. The robust and durable stainless steel constructions maintain their positive aesthetic and acoustic properties over many years.

In the typical layout, the meshes of each net are identical in size. However, it is now also possible to construct nets with gradient mesh apertures. The width of the mesh apertures remains stable, but the height increases, resulting in different mesh apertures within the same ‘Webnet’: in the lower part, the mesh structure is denser while it becomes wider in the upper parts of the net.

Stainless steel meshes have long been popular in modern architecture. Architects love their elegant and timeless design and their robustness, for example as 56

A new construction optimises form and function In Riaz, in Lausanne and another project in Nyon, the designers deployed a new construction that optimises wire meshes for the use as ball stop fences.

This provides crucial advantages for the function and load transfer of ball stop fences: in the lower part, sb 2/2019

where more balls hit the net, it becomes stiffer and less climbable. Towards the upper part, the longer meshes provide an impression of elegance and lightness. To the human eye, it appears as if the net is disappearing. A black coating of the net helps to increase the minimalist and discrete impression of the net. And since the new construction mode allows net areas of up to a width of 6 metres and a height of 8 metres without guy ropes, the net gains in elegance. Stainless steel wire meshes: durable and economical Finally, the new construction method is a cost-efficient solution, because only parts of the net area are designed for maximum loads. The lower number of nodes per square metre and the lower maintenance costs contribute to an inexpensive fence that preserves its aesthetic and noiseless properties for a long time. Apart from the production of the fences, Jakob Rope Systems offers a complete solution for ball stop fencing, from planning over design and installation of the mesh, from the initial idea to the final implementation. sb 2/2019

GORACON CHAIR GUIDES RECONCILE THE NEEDS OF MODERN ARENAS During the winter break, the general contractor goracon renovated the Adler Club, a 400 m² hospitality area at Preußenstadion in Münster. In time for the start of the second half of the season, the innovative lounge was ready to receive VIP guests. Visitors can now look forward to a state-of-the-art business area with an innovative design in the club’s CI. The new area provides aplenty comfort: induction chargers integrated in the desks, numerous LED screens, and the innovative chair guides installed by goracon. The biggest challenge during renovation was increasing capacity as desired on the same surface area. The patented chair guidance system optimises seat spacing through the intelligent layout of the chairs and gives the entire room a special dynamic. The space is now used much more efficiently and, post- renovation, accommodates up to 300 VIPs instead of the previous 250.

The chairs, which are flexibly fitted in the floor using the goracon chair guidance system, combine many other advantages. The system keeps the seating tidily arranged thanks to the automated chair return. At the same time, safety is ensured through the maintenance of escape routes at all times. The uniform distance between the seats, as well as the scope for healthy and ergonomic sb 2/2019

(changeable) sitting posture, improve comfort for the individual despite the higher occupant density. Lower maintenance costs through simplified cleaning “From planning to execution, we always felt as though we were in the best hands. The result speaks for itself,” says Malte Metzelder (Sportclub Preußen Münster). The fact that the desks and chairs do not have to be moved out of position means that cleaning is significantly faster and therefore cheaper than before renovation. Greater comfort in media seats as well For representatives of the media, the chair guides contribute to modern, efficient and functional workplaces in the press stand and in the stadium’s press rooms. The seats can be rotated through 360 degrees and height-adjusted and the distance from the desk is infinitely vari able. Reporters can thus each find their ideal sitting and working positions. The press representatives of football clubs FC Schaffhau sen and SpVgg. Fürth are already benefitting from this sb 2/2019

great solution. Tobias Auer, Director of Stadium Operations at Greuther Fürth, is truly delighted with his media seats: “The chair guides display impressive functionalism and are also an eye-catcher. They perfectly reconcile the requirements of regulations on places of assembly with the needs of users.” Flexible wheelchair spaces for comfort and inclusion This system is also a real advantage when it comes to wheelchair spaces, which are becoming increasingly important. Wheelchair capacity is increased by the space-saving layout while also offering clubs greater flexibility. The system thus offers a great deal of added value for wheelchair users, their companions and clubs. In demand not only in stadiums In addition to the possible applications in sport, the chair guides are ideal for use wherever a high level of comfort and safety is required in confined spaces. Numerous national and international schools, universities, meeting and seminar rooms, and plenary halls have therefore already been equipped with these innovative solutions. 59

DURABLE TIMBER FOR MUNICIPAL PROJECTS REFERENCE PROJECTS BY KEBONY THROUGHOUT EUROPE Author Photos

Ines Iwersen Kebony AS, Hoffsveien 48, NO-0377 Oslo, www.kebony.com

There are powerful arguments in favour of wood – not only ecologically and economically, but also from a structural and urban planning perspective. It is no wonder, therefore, that in these times of energy awareness this ecological building material is currently enjoying a renaissance. Public spending can have a huge impact on trends in production and consumption if procurers are conscious of their responsibility as largescale consumers. Kebony refines softwoods such as pine to create a particularly durable timber product. The bio-alcohol used impregnates the cell walls and crosslinks with the fibres – enabling the timber to achieve an extremely high degree of durability (class 1). This durability is achieved without any chemical additives and is documented by the “Swan” eco-label (the Scandinavian equivalent of the “Flower” of the EU ecolabel). Kebony is also FSC® -certified, which means it complies with the procurement guidelines. An increasing number of local authorities are turning to this durable timber. For instance, the flooring at the MuRheNa natural adventure pool features Kebony. The wood was selected primarily on account of its service life and low maintenance needs. These quality features were also key to it being used at the Lidingövallen football stadium and for the SpardaWelt open-air theatre at 60

Killesberg. Kebony’s convincing R12/B anti-slip classification was also one of the reasons it was chosen for the Samppalinna outdoor pool in Finland. Also of importance was the material’s non-toxicity, the 30-year guarantee and the fact that the boards do not get too hot in summer. Furthermore, the timber is easily cleaned with water and does not require any additional wood care products. References Lidingövallen football stadium, Sweden Lidingövallen football stadium recently underwent impressive renovation. Kebony was chosen for the flooring and panelling on account of its durability, sustainability and aesthetics. The combination of metal panels and wooden profiles used as the panelling creates a varied texture against a contrasting background. In addition, the sb 2/2019

seating area comprises creatively-shaped benches featuring Kebony decking boards to provide smooth and comfortable seating surfaces. Samppalinna outdoor pool in Turku, Finland This Olympic pool is one of eight outdoor pools built in Finland in the 1950s. The primary goal of this renovation was to retain the legacy of this historic building and use modern architecture to restore it in an effort to adapt the facility to the 21st century. Kebony Character shiplap was used as panelling for the main building while Kebony Clear was selected for the outdoor cladding, benches and wall decoration in the washing area. SpardaWelt open-air theatre at Killesberg, Germany Architect and Managing Director of asp Architekten Eberhard Becker comments on the refurbishment: “We were very impressed by the material’s appearance and durabil ity. Visitors to the new concert season will also be pleased by the fact that Kebony is particularly low-splinter.” The first step involved refurbishing the wood used for the benches, including the backrests. All in all, more than 400 m² of Kebony Character (28 x 120 mm) was fitted. sb 2/2019

MuRheNa natural adventure pool in Murg, Germany The municipality of Murg converted the conventional outdoor pool into a natural pool with ecological water treatment and the utilisation of solar energy. The site was fitted with attractive walkways made of larch. However, problems started arising after only a few years. Children were injured by splintering wood and there was an increase in the number of complaints from bathers. Steady penetration of moisture into the wood caused the coatings to rot from below, which affected the entire supporting structure. As coniferous wood was once again to be used here instead of a durable tropical hardwood, the decision fell in favour of Kebony Clear flooring. Approval from the building authorities For major municipal projects it is also of note, if not even crucial, that Kebony has received building approval for its Clear decking boards measuring 22 x 142 mm. Kebony is now the first modified wood product to receive building approval from the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik. This extends its range of applications enormously.

EFFECTIVE RAINWATER TREATMENT INTERCEPTS MICROPLASTICS FROM ARTIFICIAL TURF SPORTFIX®CLEAN TO COMBAT PLASTIC CONTAMINATION IN WATER BODIES Author Photos

Petra Pahl HAURATON GmbH & Co. KG, Werkstraße 13, DE-76437 Rastatt, www.hauraton.com

Precipitation and surface water flush out microplastics from artificial turf pitches. This is a challenge that Hauraton is overcoming with responsible environmental technology. The drainage specialist based in the Baden region has a safe and effective solution for filtering and retaining microplastic particles. In the Sportfix®Clean drainage system and channel filter with filter substrate Carbotec 60, particles as small as 0.45 µm (0.00045 mm) are reliably removed by filtering. With sports fields being equipped increasingly with artificial turf worldwide, this is highly relevant. Synthetic surfaces are very robust, require much less maintenance than natural turf and provide a high standard of safety for athletes. On modern surfaces, such playing properties as ball roll behaviour are very close to those of natural turf sports pitches. The benefits of artificial turf also include a long useful life of around 1,700 hours per year compared to 400 to 800 hours for natural turf, a service life of at least ten years and greatly reduced maintenance effort. 62

Mechanical wear creates tiny plastic particles Artificial turf surfaces are a type of plastic carpet. During play on such surfaces, the EPDM granulate (the material used for infilled artificial turf) and the synthetic grass fibres are exposed to repeated stressing. The mechanical wear from high tread loads – as arising during football or rugby – causes tiny particles or blades of artificial grass to break off. This amounts to 250 to 300 kg per year for modern sports pitches. These particles need to be prevented from entering the natural water cycle, and sb 2/2019

ultimately the food chain, via rainwater draining off the pitch. Research over the last few years has shown that microplastics, now present in large quantities in the world’s oceans, have also already entered our food chain. The health consequences are not yet known. To prevent plastic particles from reaching water bodies, collected surface water must be filtered before it is distributed. Surface filtration intercepts the smallest particles Sportfix®Clean channels offer a simple but extraordi narily simple solution. The channels safely collect not only surface water flowing off the sports field contaminated with microplastics, but also larger microplastic parts transported to and collected along the edge of the pitch during play. The water is collected and drained off in the channel run, while being fed through the channel filter and filtered at the same time. The filter substrate used, Carbotec 60, is able to permanently retain the finest particles with sizes down to 0.45 µm. sb 2/2019

Longer maintenance intervals for extra reliability for the operator This channel filter functions on the principle of surface filtration. It is therefore twice as effective: not only plastic parts are retained on the filter surface, but also pollutants such as heavy metals and hydrocarbons. The system has been shown to work reliably over very long periods. Long maintenance intervals and simple cleaning are additional benefits. After many years of use, filter cake forms on the surface of the filter. This is stripped off during maintenance and then only the filter substrate that has been removed is replenished. Drainage systems are also usually required for artificial turf surfaces, whether they are used on hockey fields or football pitches. In addition to safe drainage, Sportfix Clean channels also provide a simple way to filter the waste water and permanently retain plastic particles and pollutants. This economical filter system can also be installed at existing facilities. 63

INNOVATIVE PLANNING OF VIDEO OBSERVATION IN STADIA AND ARENAS 3D SIMULATION FOR MODERN VIDEO SECURITY SYSTEMS Author and Photos

Dallmeier electronic GmbH & Co.KG, Bahnhofstr. 16, DE-93047 Regensburg, www.dallmeier.com

Many stadia all over the world have placed their confidence in video security equipment from Dallmeier. In addition to the technical advantages of the patented „Panomera®“ technology, the decisive factor is often reliabil ity and flexibility. When designing its solutions, Dallmeier relies on an ingenious 3D simulation which not only offers the highest degree of planning reliability, but is also able to adapt rapidly and flexibly to changes. The team of experts consisting of engineers and graphic designers build precise, three-dimensional simulations plans in two- or three dimensions – in DWG format for example – of the customer‘s environment. If there is no other solution, even photographs and Google Maps information are sufficient to create models that are usable for planning. The entire solution including cameras, sensors and other components is then simulated in the finished 3D model of the customer environment. This procedure is very important for detecting „adumbrations“, that is to say areas that are not captured by a camera because other objects are in the way. With 3D project simulation, the problem can be addressed immediately and eliminated either by repositioning the cameras or adding further components. Specification of 250 pixels per metre Before the 3D model is prepared, workshops are held jointly with the customer to define the security objectives and compile a product requirements document and a scope statement. One specification may be for example that a „pixel density“ of at least 250 pixels per metre (px/m) or higher is achieved in all areas of a stadium that are accessible to the public. This key parameter is defined in a DIN rule and ensures that the recording quality is 64

sufficient to enable unknown individuals to be identified with certainty in the event of an investigation. Thus, with the 3D simulation it is child‘s play to ensure that the 250 px/m specification is achieved literally in every last corner: Colour coding in the 3D simulation makes it pos sible to say exactly where the value has been reached, and where it needs to be improved. From planning straight to the installation site From the product database linked with a system developed by Dallmeier itself, just a few clicks are needed to choose from an extensive range of camera models and put together the optimum configuration. Once the overall environment has been finalised, the system generates a complete parts list containing all components. A particular bonus is the automatic generation of „CamCards“ – precise configuration documents for each individual camera. Besides the dramatic time savings, the major advantage lies in the stability of the planning. Test of the entire system in Regensburg Dallmeier has the „Factory Acceptance Test (FAT)“: All components of the total solution are set up on the Dallmeier FAT Centre, and the final environment is tested in live operation until everything functions flawlessly. sb 2/2019

HOCKEY TURF MADE FROM RENEWABLE RAW MATERIAL WORLD‘S FIRST POLIGRAS TOKYO GT FOR CREFELDER HTC Author Photos

Barbara Mäurle Polytan GmbH, Gewerbering 3, DE-86666 Burgheim, www.polytan.com

Poligras Tokyo GT is the name of the new synthetic turf system for hockey that has been developed by Polytan as official Global Supplier to the FIH (International Hockey Federation) for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Not only is the dark-blue playing field faster than ever before, but the turf fibres also consist predominantly of a bio-based synthetic from Braskem. The hockey players at Crefelder HTC are delighted with the world‘s first Poligras Tokyo GT. The club, the city and the state have jointly invested around 500,000 euros in a new hockey pitch to ensure that the next round of the FINAL FOUR 2019 is also a resounding success in May. Poligras Tokyo GT, which has been developed by Polytan with a view to the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan, was the system of choice for the new pitch. Club manager Robert Haake on the new synthetic turf: „Poligras Tokyo GT is currently the best hockey turf in the world and we are delighted to be the first ever venue where it has been installed.“ What‘s more, he anticipates that the blue base will exert a strong pull on other teams. The Poligras Tokyo GT turf achieves a better environmental balance by using the bio-based plastic I’m green™ by Braskem, the world market leader in this field. Renewable raw materials make up 60 per cent of the polyethylene (PE) base material for the filaments. It is possible to increase this proportion to 100 per cent PE base material, but at a higher cost. As was shown during testing, not only does the new material improve the eco-balance of the synthetic turf, it also optimises the playing qualities of the surface: the ball roll distance increases by up to 25 per sb 2/2019

cent compared with the predecessor product. This prom ises to make games of hockey even faster and more dynamic, with even more precise moves. The PolyBase GT elastic layer is the most recent arrival in the Green Technology product family of Polytan. The product owes its sustainability to a newly developed binder for the permanently elastic bonding of granules whose manufacture produces lower CO2 emissions. Quite apart from the ecological aspects and improved playing qualities, the blue colour of the new Poligras Tokyo GT synthetic hockey pitch in Krefeld is also a winner. The blue playing surface has been all but standard practice at top-flight hockey competitions since the 2012 Olympic Games in London. It sharpens the contrast with the yellow hockey ball and makes it easier to follow the progress of play. This benefits players, spectators and, above all, television viewers. Crefelder HTC has even designed a playing field that exceeds the required dimensions of 100 x 60 yards (91.4 x 55 m) for the purposes of television coverage, which means LED perimeter systems can also be set up for television broadcasts. 65

SPRINKLER SYSTEM FOR ARTIFICIAL TURF PERROT EQUIPS THE 2018 YOUTH OLYMPICS Location Author Photos

Buenos Aires, Argentina Detlef Ring PERROT REGNERBAU CALW GmbH, Industriestraße 19-29, DE-75382 Althengstett, www.perrot.de

The unique PERROT VP irrigation system played a key role in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Just like for the Summer Olympic Games in 2008, 2012 and 2016, the hockey fields in the Parque Polideportivo Roca in Buenos Aires were equipped with PERROT VP pop-up sprinklers. The current VP3 version with its unique piston drive – manufactured exclusively by Perrot – is a technically sophisticated and reliable pop-up sprinkler series. The VP3 sprinkler series best fulfils the two main requirements of an artificial turf sprinkler system: highly uniform water distribution over the entire pitch, with all sprinklers located off the pitch – and rapid sprinkler rotation, allowing a full application of water across the field, prior to the game and during the halftime break in ten minutes or less. The sprinklers of the VP3 series achieve their optimum performance at an operating pressure of 4 to 8 bar. Thanks to the nozzle geometry developed with partners from universities, the pop-up sprinklers can achieve a radius of more than 50 metres. The VP3 sprinklers have a water throughput of 26 to 69 m³/h at operating pressures between 4 and 8 bar. Their 25° trajectory ensures better 66

wind resistance. Due to the ingenious placement of the near and mid-range nozzles, a CU (Christiansen‘s Uniformity) coefficient of more than 80 per cent can be achieved with the right sprinkler placement. The VP3 is available as valve-in-head model, with very low pressure loss, even though the inlet of 2“ is smaller than in the previous model. For trouble-free maintenance, all parts including the solenoid can be serviced from the top without the need for digging. These advantages played out clearly during the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. The artificial turf was conserved because it was not damaged by cut-outs in the pitch surface. There was always enough water on the pitch – for a fast game and protection from player injury.

SKATEHALLE BERLIN

A PLACE TO EXPLORE BIG IDEAS

With its location on Berlin-Friedrichhain’s RAW site, the indoor skatepark finds itself amidst world-renowned art, culture, music and nightlife. As part of the “Franz Stenzer” railway repair works (RAW), the building has been used as an indoor skatepark since 2004.

Oslofjord Convention Center is characterized by its multifunctional and flexible solutions. The facilities and technical systems create nearly boundless possibilities for presentations, entertainment, sporting events and catering.

Since the announcement of skateboarding’s inclusion in the next Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, a big field of tension has arisen between the sports origins in subculture and its competitive aspirations. This apparent ambivalence also found its way into the new design of Skatehalle Berlin. Designed and rebuilt in 2018 by LNDSKT in cooperation with an expert group consisting of local skateboarders and Yamato Living Ramps, the park design succeeds in combining the cultural and athletic aspects of skateboarding. Thus, both athletic-progressive and creative-playful features have been integrated into the 1,400 square metre area to meet the needs of beginners, advanced skateboarders and professionals. Inspired by architectural elements of the urban environment, street features have been imported into an indoor context in an authentic and creative sculptural design. Also, local contemporary artist Daniel Richter has recreated his artwork “Alles ohne Nichts” as a section of wall infill on the front of the park. At the same time the indoor skatepark serves as a regional talent base for the SKSLB (Skateboard and Longboard Sports Commission) and DRIV (German Inline Skating and Roller Sports Association) for Tokyo 2020. Skatehalle Berlin – a space where sport and culture go hand in glove.

LNDSKT Skatepark Design www.lndskt.com sb 2/2019

Oslofjord was built with a particular focus on environmental impact. The heating and cooling systems employ renewable energy sources, and with a campus designed for minimal vehicle traffic, guests and staff enjoy a notably environmentally friendly atmosphere. The heating and cooling system is based on both a heat pump which uses seawater as an energy source and pellet bio-energy. Oslofjord is at the cutting edge of modern building energy technology. The Convention Center complies with the Norwegian energy efficiency and renewable energy policy. The advantages of the flooring system: More injury-free training hours and higher performance levels. Pulastic® SP is a spike-resistant, safe and comfortable indoor athletics surface that also meets the requirements of the demanding sportsperson in other indoor sports. It can bear very heavy weights, for instance forklift trucks, heavy equipment such as podiums and stands, and large numbers of visitors. This makes a venue with a Pulastic® SP floor ideal for concerts, trade fairs and large-scale (sporting) events. Sika’s partner Gulv Takteknikk AS has installed over 9,000 m2 of Pulastic SP floors in this building. And the Pulastic team is proud to say it is the biggest spikeresistant sports floor in the history of Pulastic!

JULISKA STADIUM IN PRAGUE

EN 14974 – SKATEPARKS

Juliska Stadium was opened in Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic, in 1960. Having undergone extensive alterations in 1975, the stadium now holds around 18,800 spectators with seating for 8,150, some sections of which are covered. The sports facility has a 105 x 68 metre real grass playing field surrounded by a tartan track, which makes it suitable for football as well as track and field athletics. The stadium is owned by the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic.

In April 2019, the fully revised EN 14974 “Skateparks – Safety requirements and test methods” is due for publication as a standard now applicable to outdoor and indoor facilities across all disciplines, its purpose being to simplify the evaluation of skatepark elements and the skating surface. The fact that the publication of this standard constitutes a transformation in the planning of skateparks is illustrated by how the standard has evolved.

The ageing running track was fully refurbished by Polytan between July and September 2018. Rekortan PUR, a water-impermeable, multi-layer poured in-situ system made by Polytan, was chosen as the new retopping system. This high-speed sports surface offers very fast acceleration combined with optimum shock absorption properties, making it the ideal base for personal bests, new records and international elite sport. The tartan track was certified for this purpose by the IAAF after being refurbished. The Capri blue outside section does not need to meet the requirements of runners, so it was fitted with the hard-wearing PolyPlay SE allround surface from Polytan. Not only does the refurbished tartan track in Juliska Stadium have a surface ideally suited to running shoes with spikes thanks to its new interspersed granules, but it has also been laid in some gleaming new colours. As well as the conventional brick-red circular track, the two D-shaped inside sections were installed in a glowing rosé colour and the outer circumference in a bright Capri blue at the client’s request. Juliska Stadium is the first stadium in the Czech Republic to have Polytan SmarTracks installed. This is a data logging system which takes accurate measurements and facilitates daily training diagnostics without costly technical structures. Polytan GmbH www.polytan.com 68

When the first DIN standard for roller sports facilities was published in 1995, roller sport was still in its infancy in terms of safety. This was demonstrated clearly by its focus on several specific elements, which have often been used for the past 20 years as a “blueprint” for various skateparks. The result for a long time was small, demanddriven and often uniform skateparks without individual ity. This changed in the early 2000s when skateboarding became increasingly popular and attracted growing interest from manufacturers. And this led to developments in standardisation. Since a superficial revision of the standard would have been insufficient to accommodate all the changes, the EU standardisation committee was finally convened in 2014. Ingo Naschold from Germany, who has been an active skateboarder for almost 30 years and is now an established planner of urban movement spaces with DSGN CONCEPTS, has been decisively involved in pushing forward the revision. By working directly and intensively with the standard, the work of DSGN CONCEPTS testifies to a comprehensive and professional understanding of safety, which is essential to any planning.

SIRRAH™: THE NEW CENTRAL CONTROL

TURNBAR® TPWALL

Perrot Germany has done a lot of pioneering work in the field of central control systems. The Perrot Greenkeeper control was the first control to be operated with the Nokia Communicator. Its successor, the Perrot Satellite Control, was the first web-based decoder controller ever.

The wall version of the TURNBAR system presented for the first time at GaLaBau 2018 offers a comprehensive fastening solution for walls or ceilings with the striking Templar profile. It adds another important system module to the series.

Now Perrot sets new standards with SIRRAH™. SIRRAH™ is specially designed for the challenges of a wide variety of systems. From golf courses and sports facilities to amusement parks, SIRRAH™ is the first choice in irrigation control. With SIRRAH™, Perrot’s customers now have all the key irrigation information on an intuitive user interface, mainly thanks to an innovative dashboard with app-like icons that are intuitively designed like the smartphone and tablet computer apps.

Under the TURNBAR brand, Eiden & Wagner Metallbau GmbH offers not only a sports equipment system with unique constructional flexibility and sustainability, but also the possibility of dismantling or reassembling the system, be it once a year or after each training session. Like all TURNBARseries products, the wall version is made entirely of stainless steel and is therefore an innovative and sustainable solution for both indoors and outdoors. The entire system is designed to DIN EN 1176 – as is the TPwall element, making it the ideal product for the planning of space-saving and safe configurations for private and public areas. Combinations with concrete elements can upgrade a multi-generation park into a multifunctional sports construction suitable for parkour.

Furthermore SIRRAH™ is a web-based software, making it easy to install on all PCs, independently of the version of the operating system. Only a legalized app download is required for the installation and quick setup. Of course SIRRAH™, as any modern central control system should do, offers the possibility of remote control via smartphone or tablet so that course and grounds managers can monitor and modify their irrigation planning from anywhere and at any time. The system also offers improved flow management with dynamic programs to allow efficient absorption of water and automatic maximization of pump usage. SIRRAH™ is also compatible with all existing PERROT central control decoder systems: it will be extremely easy for any existing PERROT Satellite and Greenkeeper central control to upgrade to the new SIRRAH™. PERROT Regnerbau Calw GmbH www.perrot.de sb 2/2019

The 60 cm long profile segments offer attachment points for many variable elements, depending on the mounted height. Pull-up bars, combat ropes, TRX training equipment and much more besides can be attached. The resulting wall configurations can also expand and be combined three-dimensionally in open space with the base-free TURNBAR series. The connecting elements – the pull-up bars for example – remain modular, interchangeable and infinitely height-adjustable thanks to the comprehensive TURNBAR rail sliding system. Each configuration can be unique and can be customized according to user needs and available resources. TURNBAR by Eiden & Wagner Metallbau GmbH www.turnbar.net 69
